I hope you had a restful Christmas and New Year break, and have come back refreshed and ready to take advantage of what is happening across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt!

Jackson Street in Petone plays host to the annual Petone Rotary Fair on Saturday 17 February, where you and your whānau can connect with the community and check out a wide range of stalls, activities and food. I’ll be in the dunk booth in the afternoon, come and give it a go!

The Dowse Art Museum is highlighting the works of New Zealand artist Colin McCahon alongside internationally renowned Australian artist Nell in the exhibition Through the Wall of Birth and Death. The exhibition opens on 17 February.

Lunar New Year falls on February 10, and is celebrated across the world with whānau coming together to share lucky food, give red envelopes, and decorate their homes in red.

Walter Nash Centre is holding Lunar Fest 2024 on February 10, and there

are calligraphy classes at Yan’s Supermarket and the War Memorial Library - dates and times are in this booklet.

Finally, world class bowls is coming to Naenae Bowling Club on Waitangi weekend.

Trans Tasman 2024 pits the best of New Zealand against Australia from 2-4 February, with multiple world champions taking to the greens.

It’s the first time in seven years New Zealand gets to host so it’s great that we get the opportunity to show off Lower Hutt. If you’re in the area, head along and support our Kiwi bowlers!

Kōrero Mai Come chat Tupua Horo Nuku Dog Bylaw and Bird Protection Areas 1-29 February

We are seeking feedback on proposed changes to dog access in the four new Bird Protection Areas (BPAs) in the Eastern Bays.

The BPAs are required under consent conditions for Tupua Horo Nuku, to provide nesting opportunities for kororā (little blue penguins) and protect the nesting site of tōrea pango (variable oystercatchers) and other native seabirds that may be displaced during and following construction.

Nell x Colin McCahon: Through the Wall of Birth and Death This significant exhibition charts the multidisciplinary practice of internationally renowned contemporary Australian artist, Nell.

In a twist on the conventional solo exhibition, Nell has selected key works by iconic Aotearoa artist Colin McCahon to be shown alongside her own, drawing out fresh dialogues across geographic and generational distance.

Over the past few decades, Nell has developed a recognisable artistic practice that spans painting, sculpture, performance, video, music, and public art - ranging from small intimate objects to large immersive installations. Nell uses the language of art history, popular culture, and spiritual traditions - from a distinctly Antipodean perspective - to create works that are playful, intriguing, and poetic. Highly symbolic motifs, including smiley faces, ghosts, eggs, teardrops, and lightning bolts, recur throughout her works as a tool for communicating the complexities of the human experience.

Both Nell and McCahon’s works are imbued with the symbolism of opposites – light and dark, birth and death, feminine and masculine, and joy and sadness.

Lunar New Year festivities Lunar New Year is celebrated throughout the world with families coming together to share bountiful food, give red envelopes, clean, and decorate their houses in red.

The date for Lunar New Year changes each year, as it is determined by the lunisolar calendar. This year, the new year falls on Saturday 10 February.

Each year is appointed an animal from the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac; rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. This cycle repeats every 12 years, and people born in those years are said to embody the traits of their year’s animal.

There is another cycle that can affect the Chinese Zodiac, the five elements, derived from Wuxing, a philosophy used to describe the relationship and interdependence between all things. These elements are water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. They rotate on a five year cycle, and can affect the traits that you get from your zodiac animal.

In some countries, Lunar New Year signals 7 days of public holidays, where people will be able to attend public celebrations and parties with their families. Preperations start this year on Friday 2 February, and celebrations can last up to 16 days, starting on the first day of the new year.

NZ Post services now available at Petone Neighbourhood Hub

Since December 2023, the Petone community have had easy access to selected NZ Post services at their local Neighbourhood Hub. Following the announcement in August of 2023 that Petone Pharmacy was relinquishing its NZ Post agency, calls from the public to retain NZ Post services in the Petone community grew.

This led Hutt City Council to consider providing Postal Services from NZ Post within the everyday running of the Neighbourhood Hub. Council identified this as an opportunity to fill a gap in the community for a much-needed service.
