Welcome!

In 2004, Hutchison had the vision to open its doors to the Greater Memphis community by offering classes through its newly launched arts academy. Since that time, more than 20,000 students ages two through adult have participated in the arts academy in workshops, year-long classes, master classes, events, service learning through the arts, and private instruction with professional artists and arts organizations on Hutchison’s campus. In 2007, the Mary Miles Loveless Arts Academy was expanded into the Center for Excellence. Through the Center, Hutchison shares its tradition of excellence through offerings in academics, arts, athletics, education, and leadership. Instructors in each of the Center’s six components strive to awaken and inspire artists, athletes, and scholars and to engage leaders, educators, and parents in thought-provoking classes and lectures. The Perre Magness Series on Memphis History and Issues is a tribute to Perre Magness, one of Memphis’ most distinguished historians and writers. The series was created to extend the understanding of Memphis’ past and present as we look toward its future. Throughout the school year, research projects, speakers, and panels help girls understand Memphis’ uniqueness as a city. Culminating projects by the girls are archived and added to the incredible resources donated to our library by Perre Magness. The theme for 2015-2016 is Renovation through Innovation: How is innovation reshaping Memphis? Studies and investigations on how Memphis is repurposing, reinventing, and repositioning itself will be developed across the school. Girls will explore many aspects of this topic including Memphis as a center for entrepreneurship and invention. After exploring how Memphis is renovating and modernizing as a city, our girls will explore problems through innovative and creative solutions themselves. A LICENSE TO QUILL: CREATIVE WRITING CONFERENCE For girls and boys in grades 5–8 Develop your creative writing skills in poetry and fiction, emphasizing the development of suspense and mystery.

Join area Kennedy Center trained educators and participate in creating a short touring show of the commissioned script from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. This compelling short theatre piece and accompanying photography exhibit of award winning images of world renowned change agents will perform at the Memphis Children’s Theater Festival in late May. center for excellence general information

Admission is granted to qualified students in the order in which completed registration forms with payments /deposits are received. Hutchison welcomes qualified students of any race, color, religion, or ethnic origin to Center program activities.

days prior to the first class meeting will result in a refund/credit of fees. After five (5) days prior to the first class meeting, there will be no refund of fees.

Students should arrive on time and be picked up promptly at the end of each class. For the safety and security of all participants, girls and boys left unsupervised on campus after sessions will be escorted to Extended Care. Parents will be charged $15 each day. An additional charge of $5.00 each minute will be assessed for all SPARK campers remaining on campus after 6:05 pm.

Registration is required for each Center for Excellence offering.

Sessions are filled on a first-come basis. Please enroll early. Any registrations received after a class has reached capacity will be returned with a full refund. Mail the following to Hutchison Center for Excellence Program, 1740 Ridgeway Road, Memphis, TN 38119: 1. Completed registration form 2. Once a registration has been received and processed, a confirmation will be emailed to the address listed on the registration form. Please note that registrations are not accepted without the appropriate payment.

Center for Excellence fees as indicated include all activities and supplies unless otherwise noted.

Payments for Center for Excellence sessions are due in full at the time of registration.

Hutchison students may apply payments to their student accounts.

refund policy

Center for Excellence fees are refunded in full when the session for which an enrollment was submitted is at capacity or the session is cancelled by Hutchison.

Except in the cases of illness or emergency that are disclosed to the Center for Excellence office prior to the start of an activity, refunds will not be given after a session begins.

For Center for Excellence classes, a withdrawal request that occurs at least five (5) business

transportation and supervision attendance discontinuation

Hutchison will not contact parents when a student is not in attendance. No refunds will be given for students who choose not to attend classes or activities.

Students are expected to adhere to the policies and procedures of the School, as well as the Center for Excellence program. Hutchison reserves the right to dismiss any student whose behavior poses a discipline problem. No refunds will be issued for students who are asked to withdraw.

Hutchison is not responsible for lost or stolen property.

Students should not bring valuable items. All personal items should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

Hutchison is conveniently located on a 52-acre naturally-wooded campus in East Memphis at 1740 Ridgeway Road. Campus maps may be obtained at the front gate. The Center for Excellence office is located on the first floor in the Dobbs Center.
