Hesaidthemarketwasnowbuoyantwith notenoughtradestogoaroundand,where theydidexist,priceshadescalated.

“Duetothisinstabilityofthemarketthrough insolvencies,wehavehadtoself-performa numberofthetradeswewouldotherwise subcontractout,likeformworkandceilings andpartitions,”saidScott.

“Aloomingthreattoourbusinesswasa shortageofformworkcontractorstobuildslabs andcolumnswhicharevitaltokeephigh-rise projectsonschedule.

“Hutchieshashadtostepinandemploy formworkersdirectlytoensureourprojects couldbecompletedontime.

“Thisin-houseabilitythatHutchieshasis

uniqueandisbeingtestedsuccessfullyat present.

“Otherareaswherewehavehadtoengage directlywithtradespeoplehasbeeninceilings andpartitions,”hesaid.

Hutchies’firstmajorprojectusingitsown workforcetodeliverformworkwasa25-level projectinBoxHill,Victoria.

ThatpioneeringprojectgaveHutchies confidencetoestablishitsownpermanent teamofformworkers.

Now,morethananytimesince,this approachisanadvantageforourclients. Withthesustainedpressureplacedon ourindustryoverthepasttwoyears throughrecordrain,supplychain restrictionsandlabourscarcity,weare startingtofeelthelonger-termimpacts thatwillbewithusforsometime.

Subcontractorinsolvenciesare increasingintheirfrequencywiththe currentbuoyancyofthemarketmaking solutionshardertocomeby.

ForHutchies,weareinthefortunate

positiontohavemaintainedtheability to self-perform(Hutchiesdoesitsown trades), resistingthenaturaltendencyto become‘contractors’,asgrowthwould typicallydictate.

Thishasbeenachallengebut, particularlyoverthepastdecade,we haveestablishedmorerobustsystemsof controltoensureourbuildingsareof highqualitythatseeournamealongside ourclients’developmentteamsto marketprojects.

Weareincrediblyproudofthisgesture whenitisaffordedanddonottakethe responsibilitylightly.

Onaselectionofourprojects,weare activelyself-performingstructural, façadeandinternalliningstradesacross bothbigandsmallscalesandonlywhere themarketdictatestheneedthrough

lackofdepthorinsolvencyevents. Itisnotalwaysplannedbutmore reactivetoeachsituation.

Havingthebalancesheetstrengthand agility,withourflat,autonomous structureofindividualteams,provides ourpeoplewithabroaderrangeof optionsinthosetimesofneed.

Toughtradingconditionswill continuethroughout2023andsoour focuswillbeonworkingwithourloyal tradebasetoproducequalitybuildings togetherwithourclients,consultants and1750Hutchies’peoplemore predictably.

Woodiesputclearedtimbertogooduse

TREES clearedfromadevelopmentsiteonBribieIslandhave beendonatedtoalocalwoodworkinggrouptomakeusefulitemsfor thecommunity.

Hutchies’sitemanager,Steve Williams,saidHutchiesdonated BribieIslandpinesandbloodwoodlogstomembersofthe BribieIslandCommunityArts Centre’sWoodcraftClub(the Woodies).

Thegroupwillprocessthe timberinitssawmill.

Stevesaidthesawntimber wouldbeusedbymembersofthe Woodiesonawiderangeof communityprojects.

“Theclubisanot-for-profit communityorganisationopento all,”saidSteve.

“Itwasgreattosalvagethe timberonsiteanddonateittoa localorganisationtorecyclefor thecommunity’sbenefit.”

BribieIsland’sCommunityArts Centreopenedin1988asoneof manycommunity-basedprojects undertakenduringAustralia’s

bicentennialyear.

Afewyearslateragroupofkeen woodworkersformedtheWoodcraftClub(theWoodies)which setupinanindustrialshedatthe rearofthecentre’sprecinct.

Theclubfacilitiesandequipmentnowservicemorethan200 maleandfemalewoodcrafters andwoodartistspursuingarange ofactivities,includingwood

turning,smallboxmaking,wood carving,furnituremaking,scroll sawworkandpyrography.

Productsfromthesalvaged timbersfromtheHutchies’site willincludewigstandsfor cancerpatients,breedingboxes forwildlife,flagcasesfor deceasedveteransaswellas otherwoodenartandcraft pieces.

BundabergBrewedDrinkswas recentlycrownedExporterofthe YearattheQueenslandPremier’s ExportAwardsandnamed winneroftheAgribusiness,Food andBeveragescategory.

Itisthesecondtimethe regionalproducerhasheldthe titleafterbeingnamedQueenslandExporteroftheYearin 2013.

ChairmanScottHutchinson saidhewasdelightedthatfourthgenerationBundabergBrewed Drinksandfifth-generation Hutchieswereworkingtogether tocreateafacilitythatwould exportQueenslandregionalproductstomorethan60countries throughouttheworldincluding theUSA.

Queenslandexportstotallinga record$123billionintheyearto July2022.

“TheimpactthatQueensland exportershaveonoureconomy andthestate’sfutureistremendous.”

Heritagehotelrenewedforthefuture

HUTCHIES hasbeentaskedbytheIpswich CityCounciltotransformthehistoric CommonwealthHotelinthecity’sCBDintoa moderneatinganddrinkinghotspotthatblends oldandnew.

Thehotelwasbuiltin1910butfellinto

disrepairbeforebeingincludedinthe redevelopmentofIpswich’scityheart. IpswichMayor,TeresaHarding,saidthe NicholasStreetPrecinctislargelyaboutthe new–cafes,fastfoodoutlets,bars,restaurants,andretailstores.

“Butthereisanoldgemhiddeninthis newly-developedarea–thecentury-old CommonwealthHotel,”MayorHardingsaid. Councilacquiredthehotelin2014and beganrepairs,withpieces,earmarkedtobe restoredandrepaired,storedoffsiteina councildepot.

Therestorationhasincludedrecycledbricks, floorboardsandstainedglasswindows. Aheritageadvisor,aswellasaspecialist architectandprojectengineersensured importantknowledgeaboutthehotelguided itsreconstruction.

TheCommonwealthHotelhasbeen meticulouslyrestoredtopreserveitsheritage characterandtheextensionofthehotelby Hutchieswilltransformthesiteintoastate-ofthe-artdiningandentertainmenthub,with indoorandoutdoordining,afeaturecocktail bar,beergarden,andfunctionrooms.

Aushotelshassignedonashoteloperator anddoorsareexpectedtoopenforbusiness byChristmasthisyear.

IpswichCentralRedevelopmentCommittee chair,CouncillorMarnieDoyle,saidthe CommonwealthHotelwouldtellastoryofthe pastandbesurroundedbynewandadvanced buildingsthatspeaktothefuture.

“Weexpectaseamlesstransitionfromthe tavernofoldtoanewfavouritewatering hole,”shesaid.

“Counciliscommittedtopreservingthecity’s heritagewheneverpossible.”

HUTCHIES hasstartedworkon anothertwoprojectsintheQueenslandGovernment’s$280million SatelliteHospitalsProgram(SHP).

MinisterforHealthandAmbulanceServices,YvetteD’Ath,led thesod-turningceremoniesat EightMilePlainsandKallangur.

SevencentresintheSHPin south-eastQueenslandwillserviceEightMilePlains,Bribie Island,Caboolture,Kallangur, Redlands,RipleyandTugun.

TheMinistersaidthesatellite hospitalswouldprovideminor injuryandillnessclinicsand otherserviceswhichwilltake pressureoffhospitalsandemergencydepartments.

It’squiteunusualtoappointthe headofMasterBuildersasthe managingdirectorofacommercial constructioncompany,butIthinkit wasundoubtedlythebestbusiness decisionthatmygrandfatherever made.

Asaresult,Greggave21yearsof exceptionalservicetoHutchies.

andunderstandourresponsibilitytohelp trainfuturegenerations.

Whentheworldshiftedtodemandthatwe reducetheimpactofbuiltformonthe environment,Gregputtogetherasustainabilityteam.
