Hutchesons’ Pre-School at Pollok Park Since the launch of our Pre-School in 2018 interest has soared and we are delighted to say numbers have quadrupled. We now have a waiting list in operation for next year.

We introduced our outdoor sessions at H@PP in August and our youngest learners have been loving their learning experiences in the wooded area of the park campus. The children split their time between their Pre-School base at Kingarth Street and our outdoor facility.

Both the Nursery and Pre-School classes for the 2022/23 session are full and the school has opened a waiting list. If you would like to be added to this list please contact Pre-School Admissions Secretary Diane Hives on HivesD@hutchesons.org.

There is very limited availability in the Pre-School for the 2023/24 session and spaces on the 2024/25 session are filling up quickly so, if you are considering Hutchesons’ for your child, please apply as early as possible.

The increased demand for Pre-School has had a knock-on impact on availability for Primary One entry.

In recent years our two Primary One classes have been full by February. Continued demand and the school’s commitment to maintaining small class sizes led to the creation of an additional P1 class last year. If you are interested in joining Hutchesons’ in P1 next August, please email admissions@hutchesons.org.

Welcome COP26 in Glasgow has certainly got people talking. Sustainability within the school is important, and this is currently being led by Mrs Purcell from Kingarth Street. Representatives from the KS Eco Committee toured guided Barry Fisher, the CEO of Keep Scotland Beautiful, and impressed him with both their knowledge and their enthusiasm for action. The school welcomed a number of visitors, including a former NASA astronaut, to inform the children and staff.

Over the summer the school has fitted a large 99 solar panel array to the Sports Hall roof (KS is definitely not an easy fit!) and I have been tweeting @HutchieRector with fascinating updates on days both sunny and less exciting. Huge thanks to Mr Amner, the Chairman of the Parents’ Association, for his sterling work and expertise in making this happen.

Now we are launching a campaign with existing parents to purchase additional panels with the aim of the school becoming a net electricity generator rather than consumer.

Not all families can easily fit panels to their own homes, and perhaps this will enable more of us to “do our bit”. If this is of interest to you too, with a panel costing less than £300 and generating about 0.5kW, then please do get in touch swiftly. Every little helps the planet.

I am very much looking forward to the George and Thomas Hutcheson Award ceremony later this week, where we welcome back Eilidh McTaggart C1992 to speak to us about what her Hutchie education means to her and so to future generations of Hutchesonian. Gareth Bayley C1990, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Egypt, will not be able to attend in person, but we look forward to finding out his message too.

The Awards are presented to Former Pupils who are regarded by their peers as “inspirational figures, whether by virtue of their academic or professional achievements; triumph over adversity; public spiritedness or the like”. There are so many of you out there doing amazing things, and should you wish to let us know of the achievements perhaps of someone in your year, please do get in touch with Jim or Louise at the Development Office. We may well not hear otherwise and wish to keep the reach of the G&T Awards broad.

In this issue is a piece on the amazing talents of some of our current Internationalists from a wide variety of sports. Those in Sixth Year were hugely impressed by the Talking Point from Nick Butter who has run a marathon in every country in the world. He spoke with such clarity and inspiration that we are looking into hosting an “evening with Nick” so that you can enjoy his wonderful storytelling too.

This year has seen the return of live music, for the first time since covid, to the school calendar. The Ensembles Concert was spectacular, I cannot wait for the Primary Winter concert, and we look forward to the return of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the Fotheringay after many years of absence.

Later in the session will see Performance in Drama too, and we cannot wait for the resurgence here too. Please enjoy reading the Herald, finding out what current and former pupils have been up to, how the mentoring is going, and “from the archives” on the cadet programme that was found between the wars.

RT AT HUTCHESONS’

With the acquisition of our new sports facility, Hutchesons’ @ Pollock Park (H@PP), the opportunity to provide a rich and varied experience for all of our pupils is a major aspect of our Schools Sports Strategy.

We hope to provide all pupils with opportunities to take part in and develop a love of sport and physical activity to ensure their long-term enjoyment and participation. Tha aim is to develop healthy, happy, active children who become healthy, happy, active adults; providing the encouragement and pathway for the talented school pupil of today to become the sporting star of the future.

To help build the foundations for success, last session a review of our PE curriculum for pupils in P1-4 was undertaken. Utilising the most recent and relevant research, in conjunction with Curriculum for Excellence, a new curriculum for this age group has been created.

This curriculum focuses on the development of physical literacy, foundational movements, and the introduction of core skills such are co-operation, leadership and challenge. These will provide the foundations from which we can build the scaffolding in P5-7, and help develop a love for physical activity.

The Hutchesons’ Road Map will provide our pupils with a clear pathway for their physical, social and mental development as they grow through the school towards recreational and competitive sporting opportunities.

Next session a review of P5-7 PE will be undertaken with the road map continuing to ensure a curriculum which builds on the foundations laid in P1-4, developing a core language and connecting themes to ensure continuity of learning. The focus will be on developing transferable skills and understanding which will allow pupils to utilise the skills developed in their early years to increase their games awareness, decision-making and problem solving.

Sport has always been a big part of life at Hutchesons’ and former pupils fondly recall stories of team matches - hockey and rugby - from their school days. Traditionally, team sports have been a huge part of the Hutchesons’ ethos and that remains just as true today. However, central to the school’s Health and Fitness for Life sports strategy, launched in 2017, and the 2021 review is the encouragement, support and provision of opportunities for all pupils to embrace exercise.

The PE department has increased the number of sports on offer either during PE classes, Games sessions or extra-curricular clubs. The aim is to find an activity to interest each and every one of our pupils. Our first year pupils have been enjoying an introductory 5 week course in Parcour during PE class this session.

The Netball Player From a young age, Nicola Cosgrove-Clark has always been athletic and taken an interest in sports, however it wasn’t until the age of seven that netball became her sole focus where she joined the J4 Helensburgh Squad.

Playing there for three years, enabled her to join the Argyll and Bute District 12, and quickly move through the squads due to her strong talent.

In July this year, Nicola was chosen to join the Scotland, England and Wales Squad which showcased her talent on an international level and in August this year, she was selected to trial for the Strathclyde Sirens Development Squad.

This incredible achievement sees her play alongside role model and former coach Nicola McCleery, a long-standing Strathclyde Sirens player. From age ten, Nicola was coached by McCleery for three years, and now has the opportunity to be developed further to become a peer.

Namesake, skill, and determination, it most certainly isn’t coincidence.

Determination Although this may sound like it has been a smooth, straight path for Nicola, it has not been without hard work, determination, and disappointment along the way.

Training day in and day out, often between her S6 classes and late nights after school and travelling back home to Helensburgh afterwards creates long days.

Nicola has had to ride the lows just as much as the highs, keeping a strong mind when deselection

Fighting for a place on the squad, the knowledge that there is no guarantee of selection, and being able to perform at every single match is key. When selection occurs, you are only as good as how you perform on the day.

However if one day doesn’t go to plan then it’s the having the strength to pick yourself up to play the next and move on. That is strength both physically and mentally.

This is the reason why Nicola is passionate and eager to help others and is a part of the Mental Health Steering Committee within the school.

Inspire Mental health is at the forefront of Nicola’s ambitions, especially with Covid affecting everyone some way or another, and by working with her peers to help others, is as valuable as her training. As are her solid friendships that she has formed at Hutchesons’ since joining this year, the first time she has really felt part of a community.

This is perhaps why Nicola also coaches netball to S1 and S2 pupils, sharing her knowledge and skills to build confidence and inspire the next generation of young players.

This is something she thoroughly enjoys and is often with moments of reflection of how far she has come and reinforces her love for the game.

If Nicola’s schedule wasn’t jam-packed enough, she was one of fifteen Young Ambassadors

chosen out of 67 applicants across Scotland to take part in a oneyear program with Netball Scotland. The Ambassador Programme plays a key role in the future development of netball by identifying ways to help improve netball for young people in Scotland. Ambassadors will “be encouraged to share their voice, taking what they learn back to their local clubs and local associations, inspiring local changemakers. The programme will support each of goal of attending the Netball World Cup Cup in Gibraltar in 2025, a tournament which showcases the world’s top 20 teams aged 21 and under.

In short, what does it take to be the best? Resilience, and a lot of hard work.

Congratulations to Nicola in joining the Strathclyde Sirens Development Squad and thank you for allowing us to shine the spotlight on your achievements, you are one to watch.

s - The Runner S6 pupil Julia Cash’s natural running talent has taken her all over the country competing for Scotland in a number of UK schools events.

Her athletic ability was first spotted by PE Teacher Mr Russell when she joined the school in S1 - and her medal haul has steadily grown ever since.

Mr Russell encouraged Julia to train hard after realising her potential coupled with her desire to run her best race every time. It proved to be a winning formula.

Julia said: “I really got into running because of Mr Russell. He encouraged me to train and compete.

“I love running and I really like to push myself. Although it’s not really a team sport there is a huge social element to it which I really enjoy. I am also always competing against myself to get my next best time.”

Julia entered her first Scottish Schools event in S1 where she was spotted by scouts from Giffnock North Athletics Club. In the months that followed Julia embarked on an intensive training programme which included three training sessions with Giffnock North and three long runs a week - usually 10km. She also did strength and conditioning as well as cardio sessions in the school gym most days - usually before lessons started.

Julia was determined to keep her fitness up and continued to run regularly mapping out routes near her home in the southside of Glasgow. She even completed her first half marathon following a carefully planned route. Julia said: “I really wanted to keep my running going through lockdown. The thing I love most about running is the way it makes me feel better. I’m always in a better mood after I have been for a run. I feel fit and healthy.

She first represented Scotland in the U17 category of the UK Schools competition in March 2019 where she finished 8th.

In the same year she competed in the London Mini Marathon finishing 5th. She also competed in the track and field class in the UK schools competition - coming 3rd.

“It’s also impacted on other areas of my life. I feel more motivated generally and when I’m training I’m very conscious of eating well.

That’s a good thing.

Julia rounded off a successful athletics season by coming first in the Great Scottish Run in the under 17s category.

So what’s next for Julia as she approaches the end of her time at Hutchie?

Her final race before Covid lockdown was the Celtic International competition at Stirling Castle in January 2020.

She came fifth.

In March 2020 the gyms closed and Giffnock North suspended training sessions due to Covid.

“I’ve also met some amazing friends because of my running. I have made friends all over the UK from attending training sessions.”

She is hoping to continue running and also spend more time on the other sport she loves - horse-riding. Julia has also represented Scotland in this sport winning the team event at Royal Windsor in 2019.

Julia said: “I have applied to do veterinary medicine at Nottingham University. They offer student scholarships so I have applied for a running one.

I had an interview earlier this month so I am just waiting to find out if I have a place. I’m also planning to do my first marathon.”

- The Cricketer Current Head Boy Owen Gould is ambitious and is proof that hard work, commitment, perseverance and ensuring having fun along the way does pay off.

First he was selected for the District squad and then the Scotland squad.

I love competing but the social element is great too. The best thing is that you are with friends.”

Last season Owen represented Scotland playing for the U19 team - an experience he very much enjoyed.

By now Owen was training four or five times a week, including every Sunday with the Scotland squad in Edinburgh. But he had to wait a while before making his first appearance for Scotland.

Owen has also been selected to play hockey for Scotland and is the captain of the school’s 1st X1 team.

His selection to the Scotland squad was a reward for many years of devotion to the game.

Owen first picked up a cricket bat during PE when he was in P5 and was instantly hooked.

He explained: “I was due to play an under 17 match last season but unfortunately I was identified as a close contact of someone with Covid and so couldn’t play on that occasion.”

He said: “I just loved trying to hit the ball as far as I could.”

However, he didn’t have to wait too long before finally making his Scotland debut.

After his P5 taster Owen joined Clydesdale Cricket Club and began training once or twice a week.

Already an accomplished hockey player for his age, Owen found he had a lot of transferable skills.

He said: “I had played quite a lot of hockey by then and I had pretty good hand/eye co-ordination which really helped with cricket.”

Owen started playing competitively in the season between P7 and S1 and quickly realised he loved taking part in competitions.

He said: “People think that cricket matches are really long and there is a lot of sitting about but there is a huge social element to the game.”

During the 2018/19 season Owen scored quite a lot of runs and his natural talent was spotted quickly.

He was also awarded player of the tournament a few times.

He explained: “Not long after I missed out on the U17 match I was selected for the U19 match.

That was a real bonus!

“It was a really great experience.

I got to go down to England with my team-mates. We are a really tight squad and are all good friends.

When he’s not got a cricket bat or hockey stick in his hand, Owen can often be found in the School’s Music Department playing the cello.

e Table Tennis Player Rayyan Khalid, S6, plays table tennis and his lightening reactions and his impressive bat skills have secured him a place representing Scotland.

Rayyan took up the sport when his uncle started a club in Castlemilk and quickly became hooked on the fast-paced game where intense concentration and quick reactions are essential. His passion and natural talent for the game was obvious from the outset.

Rayyan soon got his first taste of national competition when he represented Scotland in a Primary Schools event. The top 4 players in Scotland were picked for the U13 competion. Rayyan secured his place on that team at the age of 10 helping Scotland to finish second.

His playing career has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Rayyan said: “I got into table tennis when I was five-years-old because my uncle ran a club for children in Castlemilk and I went along to it. I really enjoyed playing and I spent a few years training with my uncle. Then when I was nine-years-old I moved to the Glasgow South Club and I was training twice a week.”

“For the last seven or so years I have been training with Drumchapel Table Tennis Club three times a week. Sometimes ahead of a big tournament I train up to five times a week.”

“I also regularly attend residential weekend training camps down

in Largs. These sessions are for the Scotland players.”

Rayyan comes from a family of table tennis champions. His dad and uncle played the game growing up in Pakistan and they have passed on their passion and skills to the next generation.

Rayyan’s older sister Alisa Khalid has represented Scotland in the European Youth Championships and is hoping to secure a place in the Commonwealth team. His brother Zaid, C2019 has also represented Scotland in Primary and Senior Schools competitions.

Rayyan said: “I had to rank in the top 3 in Scotland to be selected for this tournament. It was my first international competition and I came 16th.

He said: “My short term goal is to rank in the top 3 so I qualify again for the U19s. My longer term goal is to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

“I love the intricacies of the sport, from applying different spins to the ball to unorthodox shots.

He has already reached the semifinals of the Under 19 Nationals.

“There are moments in matches where I get an adrenaline rush from the pressure of trying to read the opponent’s plays in a tense situation and then the relief after successfully winning the point, the highs are why I continue to compete.”

In 2019 he represented Scotland at the International European Youth Championships which was held in the Czech Republic.

Rayyan is hoping to pursue a career in Medicine after school and has applied to a number of universities in Scotland.

Ambitious Rayyan is hoping to cement his place in the Scotland squad this year.

S5 Pupil Johnny Bradley has represented Scotland in the U16 Category - gaining his first cap against Wales in the Summer.

Johnny, who plays in the back position, also played in the Futures Cup which saw six teams from Scotland, Wales and four English Districts compete. Johnny and his team-mates finished in third place.

The 16-year-old took up hockey when his dad signed him up for Friday evening club sessions at Clydesdale Hickey Club following their move from Fife. He competed at club level and played in the Under 10 and Under 12 West District before being invited to train with the Scotland squad.

Johnny said: “Technically I’ve been involved with the U16 Scotland squad since 2019. I trained with them but due to Covid I didn’t get my first cap until the summer. We played three matches against Wales and we won two of them.

Team “I really like playing hockey because it is something I am good at and I like the team aspect. You have to rely on other people and not just yourself. We all play our bit. It has taught me mental fortitude. In sport it doesn’t always go the way you want it to, you get knock backs, for example if you don’t get selected to play, but you just have to pick yourself up and train hard to hopefully get picked for the next match.

“I have also made a lot of really good friends through hockey, at school, at Clydesdale Hockey Club and also at the Scotland training sessions. There is a good social aspect to Hockey and a strong team ethos.”

Johnny is now training hard and hopes to be selected for the Scotland squad for the summer season.

He is also working hard at school studying for his SQA exams. He said: “I hope to go to university to study architecture when I leave school but I will keep up with my hockey. My Long term ambition is to get selected for the Scotland Senior Hockey team. That’s what I am working towards.”

S5 Pupil Jamie Green started playing hockey when he was 10 years-old but was recently scouted by national team coaches and selected to play in the U18 category.

Jamie, who plays in the midfield, started competing in West District Festival competitions representing Clydesdale Hockey. He was spotted by scouts at an inter district competition in 2018 and was invited to try out for the Scotland squad.

He won his first cap in the summer when his team took on England in tournament in Leeds. Scotland was beaten but it was a great experience and only increased Jamie’s hockey ambitions.

He said: “I was selected to play for Scotland Under 18 in the Futures Cup Tour which is a home nations tournament. I got awarded Player of the Tounament in the U18 category which was pretty cool.”

The selection process of the Scotland Hockey summer season is currently underway and Jamie is hoping he will be selected to play for his country again. He is busy training with sessions taking place in Glasgow, Stirling, Dundee and Edinburgh He said: “I’m working towards being selected for the Under 21 team. That’s the next goal. Hockey is a great sport. I really like playing, I’m pretty good at it and I am competitive - I like to try an win things. My PE teacher and school hockey coach Mr Dunlop has helped me quite a lot and not just with hockey skills. He has helped me improve my fitness skills and also with the mental aspects of the game. For example iit can be hard if you don’t get picked for a tournament and he is there to support and encourage you to continue training and to look ahead to the next competition.”

Jamie is hoping to go to university but isn’t sure yet what he would like to study - he is sure he wants to continue playing hockey.

he Hockey Players S5 pupil Emma Murray made her Under 16 Scotland debut against Wales in August - and quickly scored a goal!

Her impressive performance on the pitch saw her book a place in the Scotland team playing in the Futures Cup last September.

Unfortunately, Covid struck and following a positive test Emma was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

Despite her disappointment she is determined her second Scotland appearance will happen soon.

She said: “I was delighted to score on my debut against Wales.

It was a two match series and we won both matches.

“I was then selected for the Futures but I tested positive the day before I was due to leave for London so I missed that tournament.”

Emma, who plays in the striker

position, first started playing hockey at the age of seven when she joined Clydesdale Hockey Club and she really enjoyed the sessions.

She said: “I started playing for the under 10 and 12 age group teams but I also played every Friday night at the Club’s ‘Jockey’ which is a fun coaching session for younger players.

“At the same time I started playing hockey at primary school.

“At the moment I am training at least four days a week. On a Tuesday and Thursday evening I am training with Clydedale and then on Monday and Wednesday I train with the school.

“I also have the Scottish Hockey Academy training on a Monday evening. I usually play two games of hockey on a Saturday and occasionally on a Sunday.”

Emma’s passion for playing hockey

is evident as are her skills.

She said: “I really enjoy the social aspect to hockey and in particular, playing as part of a team.

“I have also made so many good friends in the teams that I have played in.

“I also enjoy the fast pace of hockey and having to be alert and think quickly on the ball.”

Emma is planning to go on to study at university when she finishes school but she will be staying close to home.

She said: “I want to go to a university that will allow me to continue to play hockey at Clydesdale.

“I haven’t decided yet what I would like to study but I have just completed the latest Scottish Hockey Academy series and hope to get selected for Scotland in the upcoming summer games.”

- The Triathlete S4 pupil Alexandre Robin is on track for international success having successfully competed in a number of high-profile competitions.

Alexandre qualified for the European Championships last year after winning the qualifying race but unfortunately he did not end up competing due to Covid. He does currently hold a British Super Series title.

He first represented Scotland in the inter-regional championships when he was in P7 and has continued to train hard to ensure he achieves his goal of making it to the European competition.

Alexandre said: “I still have two years left in this age group for the European Championships and so my main aim next year is to qualify and maybe win a medal there. I’d also like to retain my British super series title.”

The elite athlete first joined Fusion Triathlon Club when he was eight years-old but Alexandre had already started swimming with the City of Glasgow Swim Team the year before. A few years later he joined Giffnock North Athletics Club and when he first started out he did one triathlon session a week plus two or three swims. However, competing for Scotland requires a greater training commitment.

Alexandre explained: “I do just under 25 hours in a big week, with six swims (just over 10 hours), five runs (4 hours), about 6-7 hours cycling and then some strength and conditioning (about 3 hours).

I do bike sessions at the Bellahouston outdoor velodrome and easy riding out on the roads. My easy runs are just done from my house, and the sessions with my club are in places around East Renfrewshire.

“I like triathlons because there are three sports involved, so if I’m not enjoying or doing so well in one or two, I’ve still got the other one or two that I do enjoy. I also like how it is a much more relaxed atmosphere at races, than say at swim meets for example, with everyone interacting before and after the race.

“I also like the slightly longer races that give you a chance to catch up if you have a bad start, and the tactical and technical aspect of managing the three disciplines in one race.”

Recent Leavers Former Pupil Niamh Junner, C2019, competed in her first World Championships at Senior Level in November.

The event, which was held in Dubai, is the pinnacle in the Karate world outside the Olympics.

Niamh, was narrowly beaten 3-2 in the first round by the National representative for the Czech Republic, who extended well into the knockout competition ultimately placing 5th in the world.

Niamh is now training for the U21 European Championships in Prague, early February 2022 and hoping to be selected again for the Senior Europeans in May 2022, which will be held in Turkey.

When she’s not training Niamh is studying towards her BA degree in Anatomy at Glasgow University. She is currently in second year after taking a year out after leaving school.

Struan Walker, C2019, represented Scotland at the World Cup qualifier in October.

Struan joined fellow former pupil Murray Collins, C2014, in the team for the event in Cardiff.

Struan bagged yet more goals as the team beat Poland 10-2 and Russia 4-2. Murray also gained his 50th cap during the tournament.

Sadly the team just missed out on a World Cup appearance after losing to Austria. Following a 0-0 draw the Scotland players lost on penalties.

Struan is currently playing hockey profesionally for a team in Germany. He has been also been trialling with the GB Elite Development Program and attended two more weekend trials before Christmas. Fingers crossed he will get in!

Selection for the GB Elite Development Program would mean Struan is a step closer to his ambition of playing at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

P.E. teacher Mr Dunlop, who played hockey in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, has watched Struan develop over the last decade. He said: “Sturan is an allround player. he has the strength, skill and speed. Playing in Germany has made him ia more complete and mature player. He has what it takes to make it and I am sure he will continue to perform and impress the selectors.”

The G&T Awards Recognising Former Pupils who are regarded by their peers as inspiratonal figures The George and Thomas Hutcheson Awards were instituted in 1997 and are presented to Former Pupils who are regarded by their peers as “inspirational figures, whether by virtue of their academic or professional achievements; triumph over adversity; public spiritedness or the like”. This year’s awards went to FPs, both in their very different ways, exemplifying these criteria.

Eilidh Mactaggart, C1992 We were delighted to welcome Eilidh in person, as the female recipient. After a varied and prestigious career in banking and investment management in London and Australia, she recently took up the position of CEO of the newly created Scottish National Investment Bank.

Eilidh’s background has been in large scale social infrastructure projects such as schools, universities, hospitals, social housing, as well as transport infrastructure such as airports, and renewable energy.

Eilidh spoke fondly of her time at school, her love of sport, and confessing she was not always a model “straight A” student, but that they key to success was hard work, drive and determination.

Eilidh also held a workshop with senior pupils who are hoping to pursue a career in banking or business.

Gareth Bayley, C1990 “Having to meet the President of Egypt in Luxor” is probably a very reasonable excuse for not making the ceremony, but we were delighted to read out our male recipient’s numerous achievements in public service, as a senior British diplomat.

Interested in politics from an early age, Gareth Bayley, C1990, went to Oxford University, following which he has held numerous positions within the Foreign Office, culminating in his recent appointment in September as HM Ambassador to Egypt.

Previously Gareth was the Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Director for South Asia and Afghanistan.

With extensive international experience, he has worked on the Middle East and North Africa, the United Nations, EU Common Foreign and Security Policy and Conflict/Post-Conflict Transition. We look forward to welcoming Gareth at a later date for his formal presentation.

The Pupil Influencers Hopi S5 pupil Lily Cornell has been helping shape government policy designed to help young people recover from the pandemic with a particular focus on mental health, wellbeing and education.

Lily was appointed a young advisor to the Children and Young People’s Commissioner for Scotland in 2020 following a rigorous open recruitment process and has met with the Commissioner’s team on a regular basis. Lily’s hard work, public speaking and debating skills, were recognised by the Commissioner when she was one of only two young people from across Scotland to be chosen to represent the Commissioner’s Office at the COY-16 event at the end of October. COY (Conference of Youth) is a UN sponsored organisation and it was an official precursor event to COP-26.

Lily spent weeks in the lead up to the event preparing her speech about the impact of climate change on children and young people, as well as researching for her role as a co-moderator of an international discussion. Lily’s co-moderator was Professor Jennifer Davidson.

Beyond the COY/COP, Lily is very actively involved in promoting children’s rights. Lily is particularly interested in the rights of vulnerable children and young people. She has undertaken a lot or research independently to understand how the law applies to young people aged 16-18 years especially (who in terms of Scots law are neither children or adults), and in so doing, she became aware of a potential issue with the Scottish Government’s child protection guidance which now extends to young people of this age.

Vulnerable This guidance of course will mostly affect vulnerable and disadvantaged young people who often do not have a voice. Lily wrote to the Commissioner about this issue, and recently she met with him and his legal advisors to discuss her concerns. The advisors say that Lily’s letter correctly identfied important rights issues and they believe that the guidance does potentially breach young people’s rights. In fact, the advisors were already aware of the issue and were very pleased to have a young person willing and able to speak about it as it significantly strengthens their position in terms of challenging the government.

The Commissioner has asked Lily to work with his legal advisors to influence the government to amend their guidance.

Lily has agreed to accompany the advisors to meetings with senior civil servants and they intend to have her join a high level national working group looking at the data privacy rights of young people.

ing to Bring About Change S3 pupil, Zaynah Sattar, has been elected as a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP) - the youngest ever candidate to be elected in the Glasgow Southide constituency.

For the next two years, Zaynah will be the voice of the youth. Listening to issues that impact young people, Zaynah will bring these concerns to parliament for debate. Zaynah is aware there will be many issues affecting her peers, however she has identified three key areas to focus on initially: • Reducing poverty • Increasing health and wellbeing • Youth work Zaynah’s interest in politics grew out of her enjoyment of Modern Studies and discussions with her brother.

Thinking about how she could get involved further, Zaynah decided to sign up to become a candidate for her local area.

In November, Zaynah seized the opportunity to push her campaigning further by going door to door in her local area whilst also holding assemblies to make her voice heard. After contacting several ministers, it was Nicola Sturgeon who met with Zaynah, and gave her the much-needed encouragement and advice for the last leg of her campaigning.

Inspiring Zaynah is hoping her appointment to the Scottish Youth Parliament will give her the chance to help improve the lives of Scotland’s youth. The next few months will be busy. She will receive training, meet other inspiring young people, learn and develop new skills. She will also gain the confidence to become a leader while balancing her studies.

Clearly delighted to become a MSYP, Zaynah is keen to get started in her new role. She has worked extremely hard to become an elected representaitve and is thankful of the support she received from family and her campaign support worker. She couldn’t have achieved her election win without their help, encouragement and confidence.

Congratulations to Zaynah on becoming a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament and we look forward to hearing more as you embark on your new role.

Primary News COP26 Summit The whole school came together during COP 26 to learn, make changes, and celebrate our diverse planet.

The school summit started with every class conducting an experiment to see if CO2, one of the main greenhouse gases contributing to climate change, increases the air temperature. The results were mixed and we learnt about the importance of taking repeat readings in science in order to improve the accuracy of our results!

Each day thereafter, children learned about the impact on the environment of different topics and, more importantly, simple changes they can make to help live in a more sustainable way.

Day one of our summit explored the topic of food. Children looked at labels and packaging and the food miles of everyday items we enjoy. We learned about changes we can make, such as eating seasonal produce or growing our own. The infants put this theory into practice and planted their own beans to grow at home!

Following on closely, day two of the summit looked at transport and ways in which goods are moved around the world. Infants carried out a spot the difference activity, examining closely electric and diesel cars in the playground. They designed, built and tested their own air-powered vehicles of the future.

Day three of the summit encouraged children to think about sorting waste responsibly and the importance of the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Junior classes learnt about a fourth R... Refuse in the first place and ask, ‘Do I really need this?’. Some children got creative and made recycling mascots out of junk materials, whilst older children prepared a Dragon’s Den pitch about the most creative way to reuse an empty egg box!

The final day of the summit explored biodiversity. Every child in the school made a bird-feeder to encourage wildlife to the garden and learnt about a different type of British garden bird.

As a summary of our learning and pledges for change, children each wrote onto a leaf a promise to the planet, describing one thing they will change and one thing they would like the world leaders of the COP26 summit to change. These leaves have created a wonderful Tree of Promises in the Kingarth Street hall.

Book Week The children had a great time celebrating Book Week Scotland. There was a special story time in the library at lunchtime, where both pupils and staff read their favourite stories, and classes paired up to read with their buddies.

Everyone around the school was very keen to share the magic of books and P6 even got to talk to bestselling author Tom Palmer live on Teams.

Young Engineers P6 pupils welcomed Kathleen and Cailin from Young Engineers to Kingarth Street to learn about gears to coincide with their Forces topic.

Working in pairs to follow step-by-step instructions, the children made complicated Flexi models which were operated using motors. P6 pupils contemplated how to make gears, what directions gears would turn and what friction is. A great way to put their knowledge into action.

H@PP Activities

The Pre-School children and staff have thoroughly enjoyed woodland visits to H@PP this session.

Each morning a Pre-School group heads off on a mini adventure to H@PP to set up camp at our newest site.

Exploring and experiencing the outdoors on a regular basis is enabling the children to connect with nature and gain a practical understanding of the world around them, along with respect and appreciation for the environment.

After School Care was based at H@PP for the first-time during October Holiday Club. The children conducted a treasure hunt using metal detectors to find the hidden treasures. Using their navigational skills, they enjoyed exploring the world of orienteering through a range of games and activities based within the main sports hall.

The children had the opportunity to develop their DIY skills by building bird boxes, creating bug hotels, and constructing their own kites to fly. The children also enjoyed a walk into Pollok Park to explore the great outdoors while scavenging for items to create their bug hotels.

The highlight of the week was the Nerf Wars Party developing their own combat strategies and working as a team to beat the opposition.

This term Woodland Inspired Learning and Development (WILD) provided outdoor sessions for all children from Primary 1 to Primary 7.

Activities such as chromatography with leaves, measuring tree circumferences to hunting for life amongst the leaf litter along with teambuilding sessions have inspired the children.

A unique way of building confidence, boosting self-esteem and learning new life skills through hands on outdoor learning experiences.

Winter Fair

Our fifth Winter Fair took place in December. Classes, after school care, Eco committee and the Fairtrade group created lots of festive items and goodies. Although we were unable to welcome parents the children had a wonderful time selling and buying. The afternoon felt very festive, with Modern Language class singing Christmas carols and everyone in their Christmas jumpers. The event raised a fabulous £1540 for the school charity.

Secondary News CREST Awards Congratulations to our S5 pupils who revieved their Silver CREST Award this term.

After starting extra-curricular Biology projects before Covid forced school closures, Rohan, Zain, Delphie and Esther continued to put in the time and effort through lockdown, and on return to school, finished their work.

CREST projects are long-term, in-depth, and run by the pupils themselves.

With over thirty hours of project work and through careful planning and preparation, the pupils first had to determine the project’s aim, how to achieve it, record and then analyse their results. Their sheer determination paid off and were recently awarded Silver in the CREST Awards – as pictured above with their certificates.

CREST is a scheme that inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers, through challenging and thought-provoking real-world STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects.

Conference Call For S5 Researcher Arisha S5 pupil Arisha Baig has just returned from Mexico where she presented her research findings at the international Hep Dart 2021 medical conference. Earlier in the year she presented her research findings virtually at medical conferences in Las Vegas and Australia.

The opportunities to present came about following a 2019 summer work experience placement with her aunt in Austin, Texas. Arisha explained: “My aunt is in medical school and was doing some research into Hepatitis C in drug users. I asked her if I could help and I spent four weeks helping at a Hep C centre in Austin. I was part of team who would distribute the test kits to rehab centres. I was also responsible for the data collection and converting it into graphs and posters.”

Arisha, who is hoping to follow a career in Medicine or Medical Research, flew over to Los Cabos.

Mexico at the start of December and presented her findings to a lot of medical professionals - even conducting Q&A sessions. Her research findings have since been published in the The American Journal of Gastroenterology in October. Her research examined the role of electronic health engagement in linking patients to the HCV care cascade.

Arisha added: “It was an amazing experience to go to Mexico to present my data findings. I hope to do more research work like this in the future.”

Marathon Man Nick Visits Beaton Road Marathon Man Nick Butter gave an inspiring Talking Points lecture to S6 pupils and his anecdotal tales of running a marathon in every country in the world kept his audience fully engaged.

Endurance athlete Nick is the only person in the world to have run a marathon in each of the world’s 196 countries - it took him 674 days. He ran in temperatures as hot at 50C and as cold as -20C. He faced many challenges.

The trip itself took a huge amount of planning and he needed several passports to be able to access all the countries. He had a gun held to his head, a machete held to his throat, was attacked by dogs on several occasions and hit by vehicles twice. He even suffered a minor heart attack. However, he was determined to complete his ‘mission’ and, after learning he completed the final few days of the ultimate race - the Marathon de Sables - in the Sahara Desert on crutches because he fractured a bone in his foot, his determination to always reach the finish line was clear.

His inspiration for the Marathon In Every Country challenge was a complete stranger he met while competing in the Marathon de Sables. Kevin Webber had been given just two years to live in 2014 and went on to run in extreme races around the world raising over £100K. Kevin and Nick became best friends and Nick took up his mammoth marathon challenge to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. Kevin joined Nick in Athens for the last marathon in the challenge.

Nick, who used to work in Finance, told the pupils to follow their passion wherever it may lie. His anecdotal stories all featured resilience and the ability to overcome adversity.

Maths Olympiad For Girls Our senior pupils triumphed in Mathematical Olympiad for girls at UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) competition.

S4 pupil, Lucy McQuilkin, S5 pupils Esther, Delphie and Arianna and S6 pupil Becca excelled in the nationwide competition to receive Merit certificates, which is no mean feat and an incredible achievement.

The UKMT sets out to advance the mathematics education of young people and the nationwide competition is aimed at the UK’s most able girls. With training starting back in August, the girls spent numerous lunchtimes problem solving.

With the competition taking place in early September, and around 2,000 participants from across the UK, this year’s challenge was far from straightforward. The problems involved a lot of mathematical thinking and completion, the girls’ solutions were then sent off to be scrutinised and marked by the panel, with their results only recently announced.

The Arts at Hutchie

The Art Department at Hutchesons’ offers pupils regular opportunities to engage with and learn from artists working across a number of different mediums. Artists are invited in to school to share their experience and skills with our keen creative pupils who also get the opportunity to attend external workshops.

Resident Photographer

In a four week residency at Hutchie, Morwenna Kearsley, a Glasgow-based artist working with photography, moving image and text led this year’s Higher Photography students through a series of practical workshops allowing pupils to develop their creative and technical skills in digital photography.

In a series of talks and tutorials, pupils have generated a small body of photographic work which explores genres such as still life, drone photography and environmental portraiture.

Pupils have learned how to personalise their work and gain a better understanding of the work of iconic 20th century photographers. Creating their own chemograms, pupils were given the opportunity to experiment with different textures on light sensitive paper without even using a camera!

We are grateful to Morwenna for sharing her creative insights and experience as a practitioner as well as her encyclopaedic knowledge of photography!

Etching Masterclass In an etching masterclass at Glasgow Print Studio, S6 pupils Jill Geddes and Mikayla Wilson spent two days working under the watchful eye of Ian McNicol, master printmaker and visual artist.

The pupils, who were joined by art teachers Ms Drake and Mrs Breckenridge, explored soft and hard ground etching as well as aquatint.

The masterclass was an invaluable opportunity for our sixth year pupils who are applying to art college to work collaboratively and to gain an insight into what it is like to work in a professional printmaking environment.

Thank you to Mr McNicol for sharing his experience and passion with the pupils.

Our S1 Artists Are A Very Talented Bunch

A Festival Of Nine Lessons and Carols

The Senior Choir performed A Festival Of Nine Lessons and Carols in front of a small audience in The Fotheringay just before the end of term.

The performance, which was also live-streamed so families could watch at home, was an excellent way to mark the start of the Christmas festivities.

The pupils and staff singers spent hours rehearsing ahead of the evening performance and their efforts paid off.

They sang Away In A Manger, In The Bleak Midwinter, Deck The Hall, The Sussex Carol and Lully, Lulla Lullay carols. The hymns were Once In Royal David’s City, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, O Little Town of Bethlehem, As With Gladness Men of Old and O Come All Ye Faithful.

The audience reviews were excellent and the pupils should be incredibly proud of their performances. Special Thanks to our talented organist David Murray and the School Chaplain Rev Gordon Fyfe.

Sport Skiing Gold Congratulations to our ski racers who competed in the Scottish Schools Ski Cross event on Wednesday 1st December at XSite, Braehead.

We had 3 teams of 4 racers compete against the clock on a technical course full of rollers, bumps, flat turns and banked corners.

Our racers performed extremely well and all raced with great enthusiasm and skill.

Our Senior team, consisting of Finlay Taylor (S6), Campbell Waugh (S4), Murray Waugh (S2) & Robert McElrea (S5) were very impressive and finished in team gold medal position. This is a tremendous achievement against schools from all over Scotland with 160 competitors.

A special mention also must go to Murray who finished in silver medal position in the individual S1-S3 male category.

Our other two teams also performed well, the Hutchie S1-S3 A team (Christopher Hair, S3, Struan Finlaystone, S2, Rory Fraser, S3, and Logan Johnston, S2) finished a credible 7th and our B team (Michael Lenagh, S1, Mariam Hanif, S2, Felix Taylor, S1, and Eilidh McLean, S2) finished 20th.

Hockey Round Up The 1st XI Boys have made a terrific start to the year several of the team have had 1st XI experience at the club and 10 of them have been included in the Scottish Hockey Brave Academy squads.

This is regional training for those who have shown potential for playing for Scotland.

This extra level of training has helped develop them overall and as a result the team have beaten both Loretto (the defending champions) 3-2 and then Perth High School 4-1, to reach the semi-final. This is against Fettes on the 8th February next year and will be a closely contested game. We managed to win our own Indoor tournament recently and given the full 1st XI never plays each Saturday, the results have been very pleasing and show great progress. Both Jamie Green and Johnny Bradley have played for Scotland this year at Under 17 and 15 age groups respectively.

The juniors are making good progress given their early stages in the sport. They lost 3-0 to Fettes in the cup and are preparing for a Plate match against Strathallan. Given that many of the team have only played for 3 months or are still in S2 or even S1, there is much to be pleased about and the future is looking good.

Congratulations to Finlay Stokes in S6 who competed in the Junior British Bouldering Championships in Norwich earlier this month. Bouldering is a form of free climbing that is performed on small rock formations or artificial rock walls without the use of ropes or harnesses. Finlay’s skill saw him ranked 10th in the UK.

Weightlifting Success Rohan Banerjee, S5, recently competed in his first weightlifting competition and managed an impressive 60kg snatch and a 85kg clean and jerk.

Rohan has been training in the strength and conditioning suite since 2019. He has since found a passion for training the Olympic lifts (clean and jerk and the snatch).

The school offers strength and conditioning sessions that the pupils learn the fundamentals of weightlifting.

We have over 100 pupils regularly attending from a wide range of sporting backgrounds.

Rohan did not rank as it was just a participation competition, however gained valuable competition experience.

Rugby News

The 1st XV team got off to a fantastic start in the 2021-2 Rugby season - booking a place in the Scottish Schools Cup Quarter Finals.

The match against Dollar will be played on January 15 at the Orium indoor pitch at Heriot Watt University It is a 10.30am kick off. The team would be delighted to have your support so please try and make it along to cheer them on.

Another notable achievement this session was the team’s win over their St Aloysius’ counterparts - the first time these Hutchie players have beaten St Als. All teams have made significant improvement throughout the season and it has been nice to welcome back specatators to our sat morning fixtures.

Development News Challenge 180 Update Give a little to change a lot We have been pleased with the response to our Challenge 180 campaign so far, with nearly £80,000 pledged over the next six years.

All this will help meet our goal of expanding our bursary fund, which is all about creating more opportunities for young people to attend Hutchie.

The campaign will run throughout the session, with our hope being to reach our target of 180 new donors by the end of the school year. We were very grateful to Noah Bateman, C2021 for designing the logo, and here he tells us a bit more about it. “After doing some preliminary client research to understand the brief from the School, I put forward a few design ideas to get across the main goal of the campaign. To stand out, it needed to be simple and elegant, with a bit of colour.

The logo that was chosen, and my own personal favourite, aimed to show how £6 a month, symbolically represented by the 6 coloured dots, could close the circle and add up to a 180 degree transformative opportunity for one young person” explains Noah, who, as well as studying aeronautical engineering, runs his own graphic design company, Fludd Design.

One-to-One Mentoring Programme We have a huge pool of expertise within our Alumni community, and we are delighted to be able to tap into this to develop a mentoring programme.

Over 30 former pupils have so far signed up to offer their help to give our senior pupils advice about career ideas, university applications and interview practice.

The idea is to facilitate one-to-one opportunities in a secure environment for pupils interested in specific careers to link up with a former pupil in the same field, or skill set. Mentoring can take many forms and may involve a one-off conversation, a Zoom call or e-mail exchange.

The programme will continue to develop in 2022, so please do let us know if you would be interested in offering your help. The programme complements our already detailed programme of careers and higher education advice.

Depute Rector Jim McDougall said: “The pupils who have taken part so far have been enormously grateful for the time their mentors have taken. I have sat in on Zoom calls, and have found the conversations really stimulating, wide ranging and helpful.”

Lewis Minster, S6, is hoping to study Law and the Development Office put him in touch with Elliot Gould, C2007, who is a consultant solicitor at the Bank of America Merril Lynch. Elliot kindly gave Lewis very valuable feedback on his personal statement and made a few suggested changes.

Lewis said: “My experience with Elliot was nothing short of terrific, the fact that someone so experienced and constantly busy, took the time out to not only help me majorly with my personal statement but also give me a real perception of the world of law, was brilliant.“

FP News Oxford, Cambridge and now Princeton Emily Lobb (C2016) has embarked on a new academic adventure stateside - studying for a PhD at Princeton University.

Emily has an undergraduate degree from Oxford University in English Language and Literature and she recently completed her Masters degree at Cambridge University. Her thesis was about the later poetry of Wallace Stevens.

Emily’s love of the English language, poetry and reading developed during her time at Hutchie. She said: “At Hutchie, I always had space and time to pursue my own interests (reading, a lot, and creative writing).

I think the ethos of the school, and the dedicated staff, gave me the confidence and resilience to pursue these interests further, so that now I find myself with the opportunity of making a career out of doing the things that I love most. “Jenny Simpson taught me English for three years (S3, S5, S6). Particularly at Higher and Advanced Higher, she always treated me like an adult and encouraged me to come to a text and see what ideas it sparked. “I was also very encouraged by the Latin department (Eileen Carey, Kate Marston and Jack Macleod). After a Latin hiatus at Oxford, I picked up Latin again at Cambridge and have been doing it at Princeton. Many early twentieth century poets were classicists and translators, so I’m hoping to dovetail my interest in classical languages with my work on modernist poetry!

Emily applied to Princeton to study because she is convinced that, for the humanities at least, the States do PhD study a lot better. She explained: “I applied here and was accepted. The six-year programme is fully funded, which is wonderful. I am one of a cohort of eight, so the university is putting a lot of time and resources into training us as scholars. In a longer programme, I will learn far more about literature than I would have if I were pursuing a narrow project in the UK. In particular, Princeton’s English department has a strong focus on poetry and poetics, and people here are doing the kind of transhistorical work that I would like to do.

“In the States, PhDs are five or six years long rather than the three or four years that is standard in the UK. The first two years of my PhD will essentially be another Masters degree, in which I have to study literature from many different periods, looking at it through many different lenses. Then, from the third year onwards, I’ll start writing my dissertation, which will be a book-length project. Within the broad range of my current study, my interest is in 19th-21st century American poetry, and in particular the work of the poet Wallace Stevens. It was at Hutchie that I first began to love American literature (though then it was novels), taught by Jenny Simpson, I read ‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘A Farewell to Arms’ and ‘The Road’ by Cormac McCarthy.”

So what are Emily hopes for the future? She said: “Write. Probably remain in academia and teach. But primarily write. I am committed to a style of literary criticism that enacts the kind of literary qualities it describes; that is to say, I want to break down the boundary between the critical and the creative, and pursue literary criticism that is literary in itself.”

Times Square Fame Ben Spilg left Hutchie in S3 when his family moved from Glasgow to Ottawa, Canada in 2015. He is now a senior at McGill University studying Strategic Management and Business Analytics.

This past summer, Ben interned at WalkMe and was featured on the Nasdaq Tower in Times Square as part of the company’s IPO celebrations.

As a third-generation Hutchesonian, Ben is an active member of the North American Hutchie Alumni Network and is looking forward to continuing his relationship with the school.

Karen Gibson, C1999, has recently taken up a position as lead physiotherapist with Cricket Scotland, and recently attended the T20 Cricket World Cup in Oman with the men’s team. Karen has previously worked with several football clubs within SPFL.” Jack Wigg, C2016, appeared on University Challenge on 2nd August 2021 as part of a team from the University of St Andrews.

Tommy MacKay, C1964, won the Lifetime Achievement in Psychology Award 2021, which is the highest honour the profession can give.

Joseph W Simpson, C1939, former Stonehaven Head Teacher, celebrated his 100th birthday in April and Sam Walport, C1938, celebrated his 101st birthday in October 2021.

National Champion Matthew Conroy, C2019, helped his US University rugby team clinch a coveted National Championship in the US. Matthew won a rugby scholarship to attend St Bonaventure University in New York.

Matthew said: “The team’s success through the season saw us ranked #1 giving us a home quarter final and a lot of confidence and belief for the later stages of the competition. To get this far, we had to win a certain number of our conference games, against Kutztown, Notre Dame College, and Penn State, Army and Navy.

State, Army and Navy. The final was held in Texas at the MLR team The Houston Sabercats’ Aveva Stadium.

We were playing Penn State who, again, we played a few months before in our conference which was a tight game with us only winning by 3 points. The final was even more dramatic, being down to 13 men at points but we held out to win by 1 point (19-18).”

Congratulations to...

Isi Ross and Aidan Quinn, both C2014, married on 14th August at The Engine Works in Glasgow. Their wedding was attended by lots of former Hutchesonians. A fabulous time was had by all, especially as restrictions had just been lifted and dancing was allowed!!

Congratulations to Fraser McDougall, C2012, and Lucy Duncan who were married at Archerfield House, East Lothian, on November 20th. There was a great turnout of former Hutchie classmates, who joined other friends and family to mark the happy occasion.

The Fotheringay Centre in the southside of Glasgow is the prefect venue for couples who desire intimate weddings in a traditional church setting.

The beautiful red sandstone Fotheringay Centre stands in the leafy suburb of Pollokshields and was originally home to the Pollokshields United Reform Church. Hutchesons’ purchased the church and following a refurbishment programme, opened the Fotheringay Centre in 2004.

A brief history of The School’s Cadet Corp The school Cadet Corps was started in September 1913 by the Rector W King Gillies and the news was greeted enthusiastically by the boys, as there had been talk of forming a Cadet Corps as far back as 1895.

By the November, 60 boys had come forward and their ranks continued to swell in the following months. The Cadet Corps was set up by Classical Master Dugald Blue, who had previously organised a Cadet Corps at Glasgow High School.

(Before his time, there he had spent time in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and had formed the first ever Cadet Corps in the country.) The school’s Cadet Corps was then taken overby the City of Glasgow Territorial Association and affiliated to the 7th Battalion (Cameronians) and Scottish Rifles sometime in 1914. Mr Blue was given a captain’s commission, and was appointed the First Commanding Officer of the new corps. When the war broke out, he received a commission in the 3rd Battalion, and left for the front towards the end of March 1915. Sadly, he died on 9th May 1915 and was missed by all at the school. The Cadet Corps was open to boys aged 13 and upwards. At first it was free to join with the School Trust meeting the expenses of rifles, belts, frogs, bayonets, flags, and chanters, but once it was established a quite expensive 2s 6d subscription was charged. By then there were also prizes for musketry and signalling, route marches via tram and train, and then annual camps.

The first public appearance of the corps was at the Girls’ School in Kingarth St (now the Primary School) in March 1914, as guard of honour to Lord Strathclyde, who unveiled the bronze busts of the brothers Hutcheson, which now resides in our school library in Beaton Road in the Senior School. They fulfilled other tasks such as flag selling and attended funerals for fallen former pupils, teachers, and governors of the school. They also took part in processions held to provide money for maimed and wounded horses at the front and to support recruitment drives. Their skills were useful, and many cadets signed up to the Cameronians when they came of age. They also participated in the King’s Shield Miniature Rifle Competition and the Cadet Cup Competition.

By 1917 their numbers had swollen to 126 boys and men which is surprising considering that by then they had to fund their own uniform. A new feature was added to the Corps’ work this year, ‘sham fights’. These were carried out in conjunction with some of the other Glasgow Cadets, who formed the attackers, or the attacked, and proved to be very popular and apparently quite realistic! They had use of the Cameronian drill hall and in 1920 the Army Council Cadet regulations gave them a capitation grant of five shillings and concessions regarding railway travel (but these were small benefits in comparison to the high cost of the uniforms.) In 1920 they renewed their association with the Cameronians and were invited to the Cameronian lectures and memorial services at Glasgow cathedral.

In 1923 the government withdrew grants for the cadet forces, a knock-out blow for some, but Hutchesons’ cadet force continued to grow. For the first time, a shooting range in the summer was made available to them with rifles lent to them courtesy of Colonel Blair, commander of the 7th Battalion Scottish Rifles and the use of targets by the TAA. In the summer of 1925, 20 boys attended camp at Portencross and this became a regular summer activity for many years. During the war years, the corps started its own pipe band, which included buglers and drummers, something that has been revived recently at the school and is used for important school events, such as our Remembrance Services. The decision of the War Office to discontinue the grant to Cadet Corps in 1930 and to withdraw official recognition of cadet units, led Hutchesons’ to decide upon the disbandment of the corps. At its height it had 150 members, but it was not revived during the Second World War despite the Girls’ School starting their own Girls’ Cadet Corps in 1942, the first Glasgow school to do so.

Pupil Memories Douglas Kinnaird C1972 As a schoolboy, my father’s ability to remember things from 25 years past amazed me. Hutchie has now asked for memories of teachers from twice as far back yet, I clearly remember statements made, words used and even facial expressions of our teachers. Teachers have and will always fall into three categories; those respected, those liked and those not. As pupils move towards 6th year they always find the “respected”, move into the “liked” category. I remember being bored rigid in 2nd year by learning Shakespeare sonnets, then in 3rd year loving these amazing stories of Kings and murder in Scotland, court cases in Venice and teenage love affairs in Verona. The difference - first a bad teacher, then a good one.

The best teachers don’t teach. They make their subject fascinating so pupils want to listen and thus absorb and learn. Those teachers never have discipline problems. My History teacher, Mr Paterson “The Skull”, once told us “I am not here to get you through exams, I am here to educate you.” I loved Hutchie, which was a boys school starting at P5, but my brother, five years earlier, hated it. Perhaps more of the mavericks who were accepted then were still there in his day. Current teachers are much more professional and monitored now, which removes maverick behaviour but then a few teachers so loved inflicting physical pain with the belt, that they carried it, usually over one shoulder under their gown. The male primary teachers were particularly guilty of what would now be deemed unreasonable behaviour. On our first full day in P5, our teacher belted 9 or 10 boys for not writing in the top line of their jotter which they had learned in their various schools since P1. I still remember the shock on the boys’ faces and wonder to this day what was going through the teacher’s mind.

Gratitude Luckily he retired and was replaced by Miss Bain who was kinder, gentler and a more effective teacher. On our last day of 6th year I suggested to those 7 or 8 who had been in her P7 class that we go and see her. We went to her empty classroom and squeezed ourselves into the tiny desks and chairs. She was sent for with no idea why and walked in and promptly burst into tears. She later said her tears were gratitude we remembered and realisation the 12 year olds who left her were now big hairy men. Another who was in the maverick camp, carrying, showing and using his belt was our Music Master Bob Collins who nonetheless achieved universal respect one morning assembly. Some lads had invisibly sellotaped together the underside of all the keys. The horrible noise he made trying to play induced hilarity in 700 boys in assembly. He soldiered on and a few single keys came loose. Then his incredible musical ability took over. Rather than use 88 keys, he used the 5 loosened keys and changed instruments with his feet, thus producing a recognisable tune for the hymn. It’s hard to impress 700 laughing boys but he did.

Teachers did assembly duty for a week and some instantly engendered silence just by walking on stage and others yelled and bawled with no effect. Many teachers had nicknames which remained year after year.

Clever ones like GWAM invented their own, some like Sandy Strang, Bob Eadie, Tam Glen were known by their full name. Others lived with cruel nicknames like Tufty Brown whose tuft of hair had long disappeared into full baldness. But the one known universally as Wee Roy, was without doubt the most respected, liked and loved teacher we had. He ran PE as a tight ship but was interested in all and dispensed life skills and awareness just as much as fitness. He retired and returned and I well remember in primary gym he told us he was 60 that day... ancient to a 10 year old. He said this is what you should do on your 60th birthday. He went into a handstand then walked on his hands twice the length of the gym (now the library).

We talk about 2020 vision, yet none of us saw a world Pandemic looming into the 21st Century. The teachers now have responded and reassessed their teaching to ensure the current pupils get the best they can.

The Hutchesons’ Bond of F

A friendship group? Isn’t that what young people talk about these days? I suppose we might call ourselves that – but we really think of ourselves as just seven friends who have (some more loosely than others) kept in touch since leaving school. Each of us had kept in touch with at least one other person: we certainly weren’t a group. But serendipity and a nudge here and there, found us celebrating together the year we turned 60. We discovered we have lots in common and enjoy doing things together. Especially jaunts to different places.

It all started in 2004 when Lisbeth Hamilton (now McEwen) felt we ought to recreate our Hutchesons Girls Grammar School Easter 1961 trip to Cannes. Lisbeth assumed the Miss Cowan, then Head of Modern Languages, role of organiser. This time, we did not start with a night sleeper from Glasgow Central to Euston, and a dozen black cabs whizzing us to Victoria, but used budget airlines from our now scattered homes and found Nice a more convenient destination.

There were seven of us in the party: Aline Ferguson (now Drummond), Caroline Gunn (Morrison), Lisbeth, Liz Jamieson (Burroughs), Marilyn Millar (Cuthbert), Marsha Gibson (Gray) and Valerie Pritchard (Cairns).

Forty-two years takes a lot of catching up. The autumn sunshine of the Midi was the perfect backdrop. We visited cafes, restaurants, markets, took trains to nearby villages, talked our way into a posh private beach for a swim, and in between, with a lot of chat, coloured in the details of our lives. We had all married, had careers and families. Three of us moved to live in England, one to Edinburgh and one to Ross-shire: two remain in the environs of Glasgow.

Paris was our next venue: we went there too with Miss Cowan on that 1961 trip. Crossed on a ferry with porters in blue dungarees loading luggage, stayed in a lycee called Jeanne d’Arc, wore our school uniform (including hats) to attend a protestant church service on Sunday morning and sang the French hymns we had practised in Kingarth St using our Banda-machine copied sheets. (No photocopiers in those days: all the departments vied for prime-time slots on the newly acquired Banda.) This time, we flew or caught the Eurostar and were there in no time.

Friendship is a strong one Montmartre, Versailles… we did the tourist bit and the catching up was different. No life history to recall. We were all back in touch. After these two chemin de la memoire trips, we really got into our stride. In 2011 we visited Stratford-upon-Avon, the theatre, gardens, and had a trip on the canal. It was the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Shakespeare Company and they had a poster trumpeting “Years Like This Don’t Come Along Very Often” which we took to be a reference to us, the class of ‘62.

Amsterdam was next in 2014. We did the museums, the walking tour, felt at home in the rain. This was followed by Milan – attentive readers will have spotted the budget airline role in our itineraries. Their routes are our destinations. Cathedral, La Scala and lots of Italian food – oh and a boat trip on Lake Maggiore. 2018 saw us in Madrid. I used to live there and so organised that one; cable car in the Casa de Campo, a RENFE train trip to Toledo, hot chocolate and churros, and a quick dash in to see Picasso’s Guernica. Local culture covers all the bases.

So where next? It was 2019, travel as yet unthreatened by vaccine passports and passenger locator forms. We hit on a few days in Glasgow. Not memory lane Glasgow, but some of the new bits that we expats had not seen.

Highlights were the Riverside Museum, nearly (well, a very distant nearly) being background extras as the BBC filmed The Nest in Hutchesons’ Hall, gourmet dining in the Merchant City and dashing from doorway to doorway in the wettest rain Glasgow can throw at you. That bit was all too familiar.

Best of all was a trip on the Govan ferry, a first for us all. A chance moment to surprise ourselves, the crew, and, I am sorry to say, fellow passengers, by singing all the words to that folksy verse of “The Song of the Clyde”, as we chugged along in the rain, like “Bob and Mary on the Govan ferry wishin’ jet propulsion could be there.”

Somewhere along the way, we always return to thoughts of our time in Kingarth St. The rigidity of uniform rules and the dread of a summons for being caught out and hatless, the staggering self-discipline demanded at morning prayers – a thousand girls, silence and a Guards-like ignoring of the unfortunate who was sick or fainted, the devotion to hockey on that rough, red, skin-your-knees blaes pitch, the casual assumption that we would always win - all of these and many more produce nostalgic laughter. Different emotions come with memories of those teachers who left a lasting impact – a love of reading, a fondness for Gilbert and Sullivan, a conviction that we should pursue a career... did all these play a part in engendering a stoical, keep-calm-and carry-on spirit that has served us well over the decades.

Lady Stone, friend and supporter of the school - died October 2021

With her elegant attire, perfectly coiffured hairstyle and entourage of friends, Lady Stone was a regular fixture at Hutchie events, inevitably holding court and enjoying good conversation.

A society lady, not only in Scotland, but at one time in London, she used her considerable wealth to generous effect, supporting many charities within Glasgow, not least Hutchesons’ Grammar School. This stemmed from her happy marriage, relatively late in life to solicitor and banker Sir Alexander Stone, himself a former pupil and most generous benefactor of the school.

The couple hosted many charity events at their home, welcoming through the years a host of characters from the world of politics and the arts - Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Margaret Thatcher among others, as testament to their influence and connections.

Lady Stone, Bette, to her friends, cared deeply for Hutchie and its community. Through the Sir Alexander Stone Foundation, she donated a considerable amount to the Beaton Road library, as well as other projects, but she was also interested in people; a telephone call with her was a delight where she would share gossip or anecdotes about her life in London or her travels. She would ask after family and would send cards in her impecable handwriting. Her association with Hutchie stretched back to the 1970s and continued until recently, when ill health finally prevented her attending concerts and shows. Passionate about education, she endowed annual Stone lectures, both at the University of Glasgow and at Hutchie. These were set piece events, as befitted her love of hospitality, and sense of occasion.

As the Times put it, “never one to play second fiddle, Lady Stone was not shy of telling people what she thought... she pulled no punches, expressing her views in her earthy, no-nonsense northern accent, generally preceded by a “darling” to soften the blow”.

Bette Stone could alternate from gregarious socialite, the centre of attention, dispensing opinions, to someone who enjoyed the simple company of her beloved pet cats. She had no children of her own, but young people at Hutchesons’ have benefited from her kindness in many ways; her last act was to leave a sizeable bequest to the Bursary Fund. Her funeral in November was a touching reminder of her place in the community, with folk of all backgrounds gathering at Cathcart Hebrew cemetery to bid farewell to a grand lady who lived a full, interesting, and generous life.

Professor Jack Dunitz, C1941, 1923-2021

Jack Dunitz credited his Hutchesons’ Chemistry teacher, Mr McClennan, for inspiring him to follow a scientific path. He often said: “He chose Chemistry for me, by making it interesting”.

In mid-1940, Dunitz matriculated at Glasgow University, where his chemistry studies were balanced with his obligations in the 1st Renfrewshire Home Guard. Upon completion of his BSc Degree with Honours in Chemistry, he was assigned to John Monteath Robertson, Gardiner Professor at Glasgow, as a doctoral researcher in the field of chemical crystallography.

After his doctoral degree, he moved to Oxford to work with Doroth Crowfoot Hodgkin (Nobel Prize Winner, 1964), funded by the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.

Here he came into contact with the Nobel Laureates Professor Sir Lawrence Bragg and Professor Linus Pauling. He would later work with these distinguished scientists. In 1948, he joined the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena to work with Pauling, whom he regarded as “the greatest chemist of the 20th Century”.

Professional success was complemented by private happiness in August 1953 when Dunitz married Barbara Steuer at Den Haag in the Netherlands, and the couple recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

Following the birth of their first daughter, Marguerite, in 1955, the family returned to London. Her sister, Julia Gabrielle, arrived two years later.

Dunitz is perhaps best known for the so-called Bürgi-Dunitz angle, which is universally taught in undergraduate Chemistry courses, and for his pioneering work on reconciling the static behaviour of crystals with the dynamic behaviour of reacting molecules in a broader sense.

His standing in the scientific community is reflected by the impressive list of accolades that he received, including visiting professorships and lectureships at universities and institutions in America, Japan, Israel, Canada, England and Spain.

He received, amongst other awards, the Centenary Medal of the Chemical Society, London, Tishler Award, Harvard University, Paracelsus Prize, Swiss Chemical Society, Buerger Award, American Crystallographic Association, and the Arthur C Cope Scholar Award of the American Chemical Society. He is survived by Barbara, Marguerite and Julia, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, his sister, Joan Sellyn, and extended family in Zürich, Graz, London, Glasgow, Canada and the US.

Patricia Harrow née horn, C1953, 1935-2021

Patricia (“Pat”) came to Hutchie on a bursary from Mearns Primary in S1.

Her main interest in class was Art, and wanted to go into Architecture but this was not considered suitable for “young ladies” at that time, so trained as a Lab Technician, working at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, where she met her husband-to-be, James.

Pat’s other main interests at school were Tennis and Hockey, in both of which she represented the school. Pat had four sons, one of whom, Ian, taught at the school in the Economics and Business Studies Department from 1989 until 2019.

She served for many years on the committee of East Kilbride Lawn Tennis Club and its parent body, East Kilbride Sports Club. As well as sport, Pat loved travelling, with one of her highlights being a trip to South Africa to visit Pilgrim’s Rest in Transvaal, where her father lived for several years. Pat died peacefully at Lindsayfield Lodge Care Home on 20th February 2021, and will be much missed by those who knew her.

J Murray Haddow, C1044, 1925-2021

James Murray Haddow was born on 24th September 1925 near Castle Douglas. After moving to Glasgow in 1936 he and his two brothers, Sandy and Gilles, then all attended Hutchesons’ as their father had in previous years.

Murray described his academic achievements at school as ‘unremarkable’ (though good enough to get him a place at Glasgow University after the war), but it was on the sports field where his real interests and ability lay. He was awarded his cricket cap and on the rugby field he had an outstanding record.

Special achievements included scoring 46 points himself in a single match and earning the accolade in the school magazine of “probably the finest kicker Hutchesons’ has ever seen”.

Leaving school in 1943 at the age of 17, Murray was immediately conscripted into the Royal Navy and did his basic training in London where he was able to continue his rugby career playing against many of the top clubs. The fun was soon over however, and in 1944 Murray joined HMS Caprice, a C-Class destroyer, as it prepared for duties on Russian arctic convoys.

After the war Murray spent many months in America before returning home to meet up with a Hutchie girl Jean Wilson who he had met before. They married in 1951 and had two sons, Wilson and Graham. Murray had decided to pursue a career in some form of Social Work and following his university training he became Child Welfare Officer in Wolverhampton. Murray received very rapid promotion and was appointed Childrens Officer when he was only 27, the youngest person to ever hold such a post. He and Jean then ran a very large childrens home in Stourbridge for a number of years before returning to Scotland in 1964 as Childrens Officer for Ross and Cromarty based in Dingwall.

The next five years were some of the happiest of his life, living and working in such a beautiful area of Scotland, and it was there he was able to follow his favourite pursuit of fly fishing with his two boys for wild brown trout. He also became heavily involved with Ross County Football Club, then playing in the Highland League, becoming a Director of the club in the mid 60s and a lifelong supporter.

Murray’s wish to always take on new challenges and to always have a project, (he learned to swim at 60 and computer skills at 80) saw him move to Stranraer, Gourock, Paisley and Largs in various senior roles within the field of Social Work and he retired in 1983. Sadly Jean passed away in 1988, but Murray was very lucky to find another soulmate, Jean Caldwell, (yes, another Jean, he wasn’t good with names!) who he married a few years later. From 1971 Murray lived in Largs most of the time until moving to Dundee to be nearer family in 2017 after the death of his second Jean.

Life was good to Murray - a very happy childhood, a successful education and professional career, two loving wives with the happiest of marriages and a lovely family whom any father, grandfather and great grandfather would be proud... not many people are so lucky.

Richard Allan, C1958, 1939-2020

Born in Glasgow on 16 March 1939, Richard Campbell Allan was a Burnside boy who attended Hutchesons’ Grammar School through his formative years, enrolling in the session 1948/49.

He is first recorded in the Hutchesonian of 1950, the Tercentenary issue, in which his sporting talent is recognised as, “a first-class swimming prospect if he is prepared to practice hard.”

Practice hard he did and by 1954 he was School Champion and 50 yard Freestyle Champion of Glasgow (any age), a title that brought the Rowan Cup to Hutchie for the first time.

He would go on to become a champion swimmer with successes that included Glasgow Schools Championship, Scottish Schools Championship and Senior Scottish International Colours, swimming for Scotland in 1956.

A natural sportsman, and although he was also a golfer, his passion was his rugby, a sport he took to early in his Hutchie days. By 1955, R. C. Allan appears in the 1st XV under the Captaincy of Gordon Ramsay, and receives credit for his “abnormally long service” a reference to his fearsome dive pass from the base of the scrum and its contribution to “one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history”.

It is the beginning of a lifelong friendship with Gordon that exemplifies the kinship of Hutchesonians across the years and the bond that school sport creates.

His career highlight came with selection to the International Team to play Ireland at Murrayfield in February 1969. His selection is recorded with pride in the June 1969 issue of the Hutchesonian and his shirt from the match proudly displayed on the club wall to this day.

The arrival of family saw Dick retire from competitive rugby and turn his attention to a successful family business, and the raising of his three children. For all his days, he remained close with his Hutchie friends.

Richard is survived by his younger brother Gordon, his wife of 56 years, Joan, three children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Frances Mitchell, Former Head of Economics & Business, 1982-2005. Died June 2021

Frances was the founding Head of Department of Economics at Hutchesons’ Grammar School. She started the department on her own, teaching Economics and Accounting. As interest and numbers grew, so did the staff in the department; initially two then three, reaching a high of six full-time members of staff in her time as Head of Department.

Throughout her career at Hutchesons’, Frances was a most respected colleague and mentor to her Department, who felt great affection towards her. She was extremely fair, supportive and encouraging.

She was also an inspirational figure to so many pupils due to her belief in them and her determination to nurture their talents, so they left Hutchesons’ as quietly confident young adults. Frances will be remembered for her professionalism and her genuine care for her staff and her pupils.

Colin Tully, C1972, 1954-2021

Colin was the youngest of 5 children and attended Hutchesons’ along wih his brothers Graeme, (1939-1992), Brian (1942-1994) and Iain (born 1944).

Music was a huge influence on our upbringing and this was driven by my father whose life was devoted to church music.

As a musical family, we all played piano but it was Colin who carried the musical batten forward to a much greater degree.

After studying music in his sixth year at Hutchesons’, he moved on to Glasgow University where he graduated with a Degree in Music.

It was at this point that his musical development took a very different turn from the church music of his father.

The swinging sixties were a huge magnet for a teenager to move into the popular music scene and Colin threw himself into this with great gusto. Various groups were formed such as Cado Belle and others. After a move to Dublin, Colin joined up with Johnny Logan and together they won the Eurovision Song Contest with the hit ‘What’s Another Year’, Johnny was the vocalist and Colin the solo saxophonist. The song was a big hit all over Europe and we all enjoyed watching Colin on programmes like “Top of the Tops”. Who would expect to see a Hutchie boy on that show!

Further success followed in the film world when he met Bill Forsyth who produced a number of films including the iconic “Gregory’s Girl”. Colin wrote and played the sax music for Gregory’s Girl. At the time no one knew it was going to be such a successful film and sadly he only received a modest one- off fee for his efforts.

While music continued to be a huge part of Colin’s life, a further parallel interest was the Alexander Technique, which he studied at Dartington College. One of his life’s interest was how to keep the body in harmony with all the stresses and strains of modern living (particularly for performers), and after taking this course, Colin became an Alexander Technique teacher and ultimately the Assistant Director at the Alexander School in Bristol in 1996.

It was during this later part of his life that Colin wrote “Charlie Rolls - The Musical”, which was based on the life of Charlie Rolls of Rolls Royce fame and performed at the Rolls Estate in Wales in 2010.

His final assignment was his book ‘Earworm’ (recently published by Amazon), which is an entertaining biography of his life and which was completed before his death in June 2021.

Colin is survived by his wife Julia and 4 daughters, two of which were from a previous marriage.

A much loved brother, sadly missed.

David Angus MacKenzie Douglas David Angus MacKenzie Douglas, writer and journalist, died on August 17th 2021, having been ill for some time.

He was born in Glasgow and following his education at Hutchesons’, David moved to London where he shared a residence with actors Brian Cox and Martin Shaw, and began working as a journalist for various national newspapers.

In the late 1960s, David began an extensive road trip in his 1954 Volkswagen camper across Europe en route to Burma by way of St. Petersburg, Iran, Afghanistan and Nepal. A postcard from May 1968 gives his address as Kabul, Afghanistan, where he was working as a correspondent and teacher both there and in Iran.

In the early 1970s David emigrated to Florida where he worked as a freelance reporter for the National Enquirer and the Star, covering investigative assignments such as the miserable conditions of migrant workers exploited by fruit farmers.

During these years, David lived with his then wife, artist Kveta Korcakova in West Palm Beach, Florida and later in New York City. There, he settled into an apartment in Manhattan, which he illuminated with ingenious light sculptures of his own creation. He edited an anesthesiology magazine, attending many international medical conferences. Self-taught on a wide range of subjects, David was commissioned in 1983

by IBM to write a history of Mathematics.

In the mid 90s, he had joined Reuters Health as a freelance journalist, and was also a regular contributor to the Medical Tribune among other publications. David was known for his compassion toward others and for his love of animals, including somewhat unusually, a pet racoon. Former Senior Depute, Graham Macallister recalls David as, “a real character, great fun and very perceptive”. He is survived by his Uncle, Alan Douglas, his cousin, Thomas Will and extended family. His younger brother, Alan Douglas, died in 1990.

Margaret Croft, C1940, 1921-2021

Margaret worked at an air raid shelter, worked as a Girl Guide Leader and worked as a Teacher. She spent 33 years at St Columba’s School, 17 years as Head of Prep School and eight years as Head of Primary.

She retired in 1981, but was invited back to ‘cut the ribbon’ at the opening of school’s new The Cargill Building in 1997. She retired to Dalbeattie, which she loved. Margaret loved to travel and visited many foreign countries Margaret passed away at Barlochan Care Home on October 25th 2021.

A beloved sister of Cath Stobbs and Aunt to David, Kenneth and Colin.
