Student profile: Saqib Nazm My name is Saqib Un Nazm and I am from Bangladesh. I’m a sophomore at Husson majoring in computer information systems - a four-year bachelor’s degree program.

Currently, I’m also working at Husson’s Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services (OASIS) as a peer mentor for new students. As a peer mentor, I help guide freshmen students over the course of their first year. In addition to that, I’m the president of Husson University’s International Students’ Association. I have a lot of interest in application development and have worked with a site called xdadevelopers for more than two years on Android development. I love playing pool and traveling to cities and countries.

The Shaping our Future campaign includes a new state-of-the-art building for our innovative College of Business, the largest school of its kind in the state of Maine. The new facility is designed to emphasize experiential student learning. It will also fuse business education with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) opportunities and serve as a hub for entrepreneurial relationships between Husson students and businesses.

Dear Alumni and Friends, The chill is in the air and winter is here. With the holidays almost upon us, now is the time when many of us reflect on how we can help make the world a better place.

Husson University is doing its part.

This year, we announced the public phase of “Shaping our Future,” the first comprehensive campaign in our institution’s history. Thanks to the generous support of alumni and friends, we have already raised $16 million and are more than halfway toward our $30 million goal.

To reach this goal, friends and alumni support will be essential. Although the campaign benefited initially from the generosity of major donors, in the

coming years Husson University will need to broaden our base of support.

Around the Circle Accomplishments, events and items of note happening at Husson College of Business Criminal Justice Faculty Member Presents at National Conference.

Assistant Professor John Michaud made a presentation at the National Partnership for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security.

According to Michaud, “Since 9/11, it has become increasingly important for educators to help those studying criminal justice and related fields, to more fully understand the current terrorist threat and the ways our community can help to protect us from further violent acts.” His presentation also addressed specific curriculum topics and methods that would lead to the successful transfer of learning to students.

Technology Conference Welcomes Husson Computer Information Systems Professor In late October, Dr. Gerald Wright, an assistant professor in the information technology program spoke at the 38th Annual NABET (Northeast Association of Business, Economics and Technology) Conference in State College, PA. An upcoming article by Dr. Wright will be published in the association’s journal.

Cultural and Geographic Attributes of Marketing Principles Discussed Associate Professor of Marketing Cristanna Cook presented at the Clute Institute Academic Business Conference in Las Vegas, NV. Her topic, “The Acceptance of Western Marketing Principles in the South Pacific and the Decline of Communal Values and Norms,” resonated with conference attendees. In addition, Dr. Cook served as a session moderator where she helped smooth transitions between multiple presentations by other notable experts.

Teaching Students about Intercompany Debt Dr. Robert Duron, an associate professor in the School of Accounting shared his thoughts with those attending the American Accounting Association’s annual meeting on education. His presentation, “Teaching Intercompany Debt Transactions in an Advanced Accounting Course: An Effective Learning Strategy,” was designed to help educators effectively train the next generation of accounting professionals.

Expert Testimony the Focus of Forensic Science Workshop Assistant Professor Alicia Wilcox, a faculty member in Husson’s forensic science program, led a workshop called, “A Juror-centric Approach to Expert Testimony” at the National Institute of Justice’s Forensic Technology Center of Excellence in San Antonio, Texas.

Business Education Conference Learns to “Lean In” College of Business Dean Marie Hansen, Ph.D., presented at the Region I – New England International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) Conference. Her topic, “Lean In for Graduates,” was based on her work with students at Husson University.

College of Health and Education Education Professor Reviews Children’s Books Dr. Sandip Wilson, associate professor, in the School of Education’s teacher education program, published multiple book reviews this fall. The articles, “Boo to you!” and “Terrific Content Area Books” were

both published in the International Literacy Association’s online journal, Literacy Daily. In addition, her review, “Books for Children and Young Adults in Poetry,” was published in the September edition of the New England Reading Association Journal. Besides reviewing children’s books, Dr. Wilson has helped undergraduate students successfully submit their work to The Dragonlode: A Journal of Children’s Literature and Reading, published by the International Reading Association.

Dr. Wilson was the editor of this publication from 2010 to 2014.

Director of Graduate Counseling Programs Named Counselor Educator of the Year Dr. Deborah Drew, associate professor and director of the counseling and human relations graduate programs, received the NARACES Marijane Fall Counselor Educator of the Year Award at the Association for Counselor Education & Supervision National Conference in Philadelphia in October. This award recognizes a “creative, generous, charitable counselor educator who has reached out to others in spirit, scholarship and deed and thereby made a profound difference in the lives of those so touched.”

Short Stories Published by Occupational Therapy Assistant Professor An anthology of short stories written

by Cavenaugh Kelly, MS, OTR/L, an assistant professor in the School of Occupational Therapy, was recently published. The book, Occupational Therapy Stories, is based on his experiences working in home health in rural Maine.

CIRCLE New England School of Communications Student Public Service Announcement Honored by National Organization Alex Fenderson, a student in the New England School of Communications’ (NESCom) video production program, won first place in the national Freedom of Speech PSA Contest sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters Educational Foundation.

WHSN 89.3 FM Recognized for Multiple Sclerosis Concert WHSN-FM received the “Commitment to Community Award” from the Maine Association of Broadcasters for their 12th annual AS4MS benefit concert.

This acoustic showcase featuring five live bands, and staffed by Husson University students, benefited the Greater New England Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

NESCom Marketing Students Earn Distinction at National Marketing Competition A team of NESCom marketing communications students received an honorable mention for innovation and their marketing research in the Collegiate ECHO Marketing Challenge, a national marketing competition. Their entry was based on their marketing analysis, advertising materials and a video for a new Direct TV refer-a-friend marketing campaign. With more than 200 competing entries submitted to the challenge, the honorable mention stands as a testament to the quality of the NESCom marketing communications program.

Paper by NESCom Faculty Member Submitted to Conference Assistant Professor Wellington Gordon co-authored a paper with Douglass Bielmeier of Middle Tennessee State University. Presented at the 10th Art of Record Performance Conference at Drexel University, the paper is entitled “Expectations of Music Proficiency in College Recording Arts Programs.”

School of Pharmacy Prescription Monitoring Poster and Platform Stephanie Nichols, Pharm.D., an associate professor in Husson University’s School of Pharmacy, was the lead author of a poster and platform presentation at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy in San Francisco. Her presentation focused on 2014 prescription monitoring program trends among individuals arrested for trafficking prescription drugs in Maine. Her paper was named the “Best Presentation (Paper) - First Runner-Up” by the ACCP. Poster on Valproic Acid Study Presented at Global Conference Ronald Reed, Pharm.D., chair of the pharmacy practice department, presented a poster entitled, “Evidence for a minimum effective total plasma concentration of valproic acid [VPA] in photosensitive epilepsy patients: Retrospective data-mining results from a placebo-controlled intravenous VPA study,” at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy in San Francisco.

Student Poster and Research Featured at Antimicrobial and Chemotherapy Conference Meagan Rusby and Charity Wilson are both fourth-year pharmacy students.

These students, along with Assistant Professor Anthony Casapao, Pharm.D., presented their original research at the 55th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in San Diego. Their poster presentations were entitled, “Impact of Mortality and Source of Infection in Intermediate Risk Patients with Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia” and “Epidemiological Study of Obese Patients with Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia at Eastern Maine Medical Center.”

Research Findings about Exosome Delivery Shared with Scientists Associate Professors Tianzhi Yang, Ph.D., and Shuhua Bai, Ph.D., along with Salma Aziz, a third-year pharmacy student, recently presented their research findings at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists meeting in Orlando. Their study was entitled, “Exosome Delivery of Small Interfering RNA for Brain Therapy.”

School of Science and Humanities Maine Campus Compact Awards Grant to Husson University The School of Science and Humanities faculty members were awarded a $4,000 grant from the Maine Campus Compact (MCC) to support conservation education. The grant from MCC to Husson University is part of a $168,000 initiative by the Davis Educational Foundation to support curricular innovation and improve environmental stewardship. Through this two-year initiative, over 70 faculty members from 18 selected campuses across four New England states will learn how to embed environmental service-learning components into courses.

Husson is one of only six institutions of higher education in Maine to receive this grant. The grant signifies that Husson is willing to address important environmental and social issues; committed to creating institutional change by embedding service-learning projects into courses; devoted to strengthening teaching, curriculum, and student learning outcomes; and dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary approaches to education.

Through an expansion of the Husson University garden and four interdisciplinary courses, students will explore issues of food insecurity in the community.

Horror Master H.P. Lovecraft Subject of English Professor’s Podcast English Associate Professor Adam Crowley presented papers at conferences in Toronto and Berlin. In addition, Crowley participated in a Southwest Popular/American Culture Association podcast on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Stories by Lovecraft include The Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and The Dunwich Horror.

Professor Bishop Featured on Greenlight Maine TV Show Associate Professor Karl Bishop, a founding partner in two companies, (Cerahelix and Odigo), was recently featured on Greenlight Maine. This program, recorded in the New England School of Communication’s television studio, features local entrepreneurs as they compete for a $100,000 prize. The competition is similar to the television show “Shark Tank.” Season One began in September and will conclude in December 2015. The announcement of the winner will occur at the conclusion of Season Two in 2016.

Husson University is sad to report the passing of Brent Cross – business and civic leader, dedicated family man, and faithful Red Sox fan. He passed away on Thanksgiving Day at Mass General Hospital after an extended battle with cancer. He was 58 years old.

In remembering Brent, College of Business Dean Marie Hansen said, “Brent was one of our university’s shining stars. He believed in giving of himself to help make the world a better place. I’ll always remember Brent as a living example of what all Husson graduates should strive to embody – character and humility.”

Cross volunteered his time as a member of Husson University’s Board of Trustees and was inducted into our Business Hall of Fame in 2005. For more than 20 years, he

At the end of the month, Smith and her students organized a “Color Crash Community Mural.” Members of our Husson University community who attended the Saturday, October 31 football game created the mural by throwing paint-filled balloons at three canvases.

Open Mic Night English faculty and students held an open mic night event on November 12. The event, held on Husson University’s Bangor campus, gave students the opportunity to share their creative writing, music, and art, publicly.

In the beginning of the Shaping our Future Campaign, Husson had 60 fully-endowed scholarships to assist students in obtaining their education. 1930s Ruth Stearns ’35, ’70 entered triple digits as she turned 100 on August 9th of this year! Ruth celebrated with loved ones and former students in Hampden, where she taught at the local high school, Hampden Academy, for many years.

Karen Leach Wardwell ’75 was recently inducted into the Bucksport Athletic Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in basketball and softball both at Bucksport High School and at Husson.

US Commercial Service and the US Embassy, promoted connections between Japan and the state of Maine in the fields of business and education.

1980s Shawn Yardley ’85, ’14 was named the chief executive officer of Community Concepts this September. He brings years of successful experience in leading teams addressing public health issues to his new position.

1990s Lyndy married Harry...and Vica. On October 8th Harry Greenfield ’66 was joined by college friends Dick ’65 and Alice Trott for a private wedding ceremony on top of Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park.

Marc Quinlan ’72 was fishing in Homer, Alaska this past summer and caught several halibut. One of the fish was 41 lbs.

Deborah Wentworth ’99 earned the insurance designation of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).

Wentworth is currently the director of business insurance services in three states for Clark Insurance.

Patricia Pottle ’92 became an owner of the accounting firm Coston and McIsaac, CPAs, in Bar Harbor, ME. She has worked as a public accountant at the firm for eight years.

Janet Doak ’93 has been promoted to branch manager and retail services officer for Katahdin Trust after serving the company for ten years.

Curt Paterson ’93 has joined Farm Credit East in Presque Isle, ME as a farm business advisor. He brings 22 years of tax preparation, accounting, and client relations to the team.

Motohiko Kimura ’94, ’95 met with fellow Husson alumni, including Governor Paul LePage ’71, ’11, at the Maine International Trade Center event held in Tokyo, Japan this past October.

Eric MacDonald ’99, ’14 was recently named the new Hampden Academy ice hockey coach. He comes to the position with previous coaching experience at Eastern Maine Community College and Brewer High School.

Nikos Sompatzis ’00, ’05 was recently married at a beautiful ceremony in Greece this past year.

Winfield Brown ’02 has recently been appointed to the GFA Federal Credit Union’s Supervisory Committee of the Board of Directors. Brown currently serves as the president and chief executive officer of Heywood Healthcare and also serves on the Board of Directors for the North Quabbin Chamber of Commerce and YPO New England.

Amber Allen ’15 was featured in a MaineBiz article this past August regarding her participation in Bangor Saving’s Bank’s Commercial Credit Development Program, a two year accelerated leadership program. Matt Mulligan, who attended Husson from 2003 to 2005, has recently signed a contract to play in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.

He returns after suffering a wrist injury earlier this year. Mulligan, who began his football career at Husson, has been a member of the Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, Green Pay Packers, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, and the Arizona Cardinals.
