FALL 2013 | husson.edu ANNUAL REPORT EDITION

Transforming students’ lives... We couldn’t do it without you!

Edward and Mary Ellen Darling: Funding a Lifetime of Learning Edward O. Darling, a Husson alumnus is already well known to many Maine residents as the owner of Down East Toyota-Scion in Brewer—but from now on, Darling and his wife Mary Ellen’s names will be recognizable to every Husson University student at the Bangor campus. The Darlings, who are longtime donors to Husson University, were honored at a naming ceremony at Husson on October 7th. In honor of the couple’s history of generous contributions to the school, Husson has renamed the first floor of its Living/Learning Center building in their honor. Going forward, it will be known as the Edward O. and Mary

Ellen Darling Learning Center. “Alumni like Ed and friends of the university like Mary Ellen are some of Husson’s greatest assets. Their support has been instrumental in transforming our four campuses into some of Maine’s most energetic and dynamic learning environments,” said President Robert Clark. The couple is widely known throughout the region for their community service work for numerous organizations, including St. Joseph Hospital and John Bapst Memorial High School. Investing in education, however, holds a special place in their hearts:

“A degree is more than just four years of education and a diploma,” said Edward Darling. “It is the foundation of all your future success. It’s knowledge and insight into life that you take with you wherever you go. The success I’ve experienced in my career and in my life is the result of the education I received at Husson University.” The Darlings’ commitment and generosity to Husson’s community has already created a lasting legacy. “The Darlings’ vision and generosity of spirit will impact countless students in the coming decades,” said Husson University President Robert A. Clark.

President’s

MESSAGE

Dear Alumni and Friends, It has been a busy fall for all of us at Husson. In September, The University received an outstanding ten-year accreditation reaffirmation from the Commission on Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). In addition, the Commission also approved the integration of Husson University and its New England School of Communications (NESCom). The integration strengthens the University’s academic programs as it provides Husson students with an opportunity to increase their understanding of the communication

As a graduate of Husson University, you’re the beneficiary of someone else’s generosity. Professors share the benefit of their knowledge thanks to donors who created endowed chairs. Students have buildings to live and study in because generous benefactors made them possible. Degrees are made affordable because someone, who believed in the importance of education, created an endowed scholarship as part of their estate plan. As the vice president of advancement, I’ve witnessed the power of philanthropy and its ability to change lives. If there’s one characteristic our

process and NESCom students will now have access to the full spectrum of programs and courses available through Husson’s many colleges and schools. Mastering essential communication skills enhances our students’ ability to achieve career success.

As we approach this Holiday Season we hope that every Husson and NESCom graduate will take pride in the achievements of their school. While our institution has grown and expanded over the past century we are still committed to preparing graduates who are ready for the work place.

To NESCom graduates reading this, you should know that we already consider you a member of the Husson University family. Our two institutions have been slowly growing together for more than 20 years. NESCom and Husson students have been studying together, playing together and living together for some time…and the integration was the natural next step in the process. You now join your treasured legacies as alumni with those of Husson’s broad national network of nearly 20,000 alumni.

It is with great anticipation of the opportunities ahead that I wish each of you a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. We know that our commitment to student success is not possible without your continued support. Thank you for making a difference and enjoy the Season!

donors share, it’s their belief in the importance of “paying it forward.”

Husson University would not be the institution it is today, were it not for the generosity of our alumni. You are vitally important to the success of this institution and our students.

When you “pay it forward,” you do something good for someone else in response to a good deed done on your behalf. Our donors understand how others helped make their success possible. These philanthropists choose to “pay it forward” and repay Husson University for the impact it made on their lives by helping future graduates access the life changing power of education. Ed and Mary Ellen Darling are prime examples. After making the largest single gift in Husson’s history, Ed said, “now is the time to take care of my University.” In repaying his alma mater for what it did to help him become successful, Ed makes advanced scholarship and learning opportunities available to decades of future Husson University students.

With appreciation,

Robert A. Clark, PhD, CFA President

This educational institution’s future depends on our ability to grow our course offerings in the sciences and the business of science. As someone who benefited from the generosity of others, I hope you will consider “paying it forward” and creating a legacy of significance for a future Husson University student. Best Regards,

Thomas A. Martz Vice President for Advancement

The Maine School of Commerce Connection: Exploring Our Early Years Husson University takes pride in its career-driven focus, offering over 40 undertraduate degrees and 10 graduate/professional degrees that prepare students to find lucrative jobs in specialized fields.

HISTORY

Husson

Even in its earliest incarnation, the school took its mission of preparing students for careers in business seriously. Founded in 1898 as the Shaw School of Business, the school offered one- and two-year courses of study in business preparation from a small downtown Bangor location. The school was purchased by Howard Mann, and became known as the Maine School of Commerce – Bangor in 1926. Chesley Husson, the university’s namesake and future president, joined the school as a teacher in that first year. He went on to become principal and eventually President-Treasurer, and was the person responsible for leading the school’s rapid growth for more than half a century. Under Husson’s leadership, the school Aerial view of Husson in 1968.

transformed from a small vocational school to an accredited institute of higher learning, renamed as Husson College in 1947. In 1954, the school began granting associate and bachelor degrees in business to thousands of young adults. Husson was also instrumental in opening the college’s doors to many returning servicemen, many of whom sought higher education to further their careers under the G.I. Bill. Before long, the student body grew too large for its downtown location, and in the 1960s, Husson orchestrated the purchase of the 300-acre Hillman Farm for the school’s new campus, where it remains today. The school has seen many changes in the 116 years since its original founding. What hasn’t changed is Husson University’s commitment to educating its students and helping them achieve success in their careers.

We invite our early alumni to share their memories of the Maine School of Commerce, and to visit the campus to see how we have transformed over the years. While we have rich connections to our past as a business school, we are also dedicated to investing in the future by improving our academic programs and facilities, as well as providing financial aid to any student who needs assistance paying for college. For alumni who may be considering their estate plans, providing educational opportunities to the students of the future could be your greatest legacy. If you are interested in joining Husson’s Planned Giving Program, please contact Lynda Rohman at 207-404-5651 or rohmanl@husson.edu. All individuals who include Husson University in their estate plans will be honored as esteemed members of our Chelsey Husson Sr. Society.

SCHOLARSHIP

Merrill Dollar Scholarships Help Husson Students Succeed Dakota Gardiner, a freshman at Husson from the small town of Hampden, Maine, understands the true value of achieving a college education. Her parents didn’t have the money to pay for her to attend college, so Gardiner is committed to working multiple jobs so that she can pay her own way through school.

are reinvested to ensure that the endowment will continue growing.

“That means taking care of the big expenses like tuition and books, as well as the small expenses like soap and shampoo. It all adds up,” she says.

Gardiner is currently studying to become a registered nurse (RN). After working in her chosen career, she hopes to return to Husson to enroll in the Family and Community Nurse Practitioner Program. As a nurse practitioner, “I’ll be able to open my own practice and help children grow and stay healthy.”

But she’s got some help with shouldering the burden of those expenses, thanks to the legacy of Husson alumnus Merrill Dellaire Dollar ’49. In 1995, Dollar was awarded an honorary bachelor’s degree. After graduating from Husson College’s Business Education program and pursuing additional degrees, Dollar taught business education to high school students in the Westbury, New York school system for more than 50 years. Dollar lived frugally, invested wisely, and highly valued the role of education in his own and his students’ lives. His reverence for education inspired him to provide his alma mater with a generous gift upon his death in 2010. As part of his estate plan, he created a $1.4 million endowed scholarship fund that would provide scholarships for Husson students in need—the largest endowment fund in Husson University’s history. Each year, a share of the funds are provided as grants to students with demonstrated financial need, while the remainder of the funds

The Dollar scholarship has helped Gardiner give her academic career the attention it deserves. “The scholarship I receive makes a big difference,” she says. “Every dollar I get translates into more time I can study and less time I have to work paying for my education.”

Dakota Gardiner

Nicholas Young, another scholarship recipient, is using the Dollar Scholarship to help him pursue a career in criminal justice and psychology. “I find that getting a sizable scholarship really motivates me to do well. I want to make sure I justify the faith that someone else placed in me,” he says. Danielle Bagley, a junior here at Husson University and a sophomore in the nursing program put it this way: “Scholarships are wonderful. They’re probably one of the best gifts anyone could give a college student. It doesn't matter how big or how small the amount of money is; every little bit helps. So to anyone out there responsible for a scholarship, a grant or any kind of award – thank you. Just knowing there are people out there like you is humbling. Thank you for allowing me to continue my education and move one step closer to my ultimate goal.”

Endowed Funds Secure Husson University’s Future Endowed funds are essential to Husson University’s financial health, enabling the school to continually grow its financial resources for use for student scholarships and new programs.

ENDOWMENT

Husson

In contrast to traditional scholarships, which must be funded with recurring annual gifts, Husson’s endowment funds typically consist of a single large gift of $25,000 or more. The funds are then invested in accounts determined by the institutions trustees. Each year, the school determines what percentage of the funds are available for student scholarships and other financial needs as designated by the donors. All funds in excess of that amount remain in investment accounts, allowing the endowment funds to grow in perpetuity. Husson’s endowment funds have seen tremendous growth over the past four years. While slightly more than $6.2 million was held by the school in a mix of endowment funds, perpetual trusts, charitable remainders trusts, and life insurance cash value in 2009, that value has since grown to more than $12 million. President Robert Clark attributes that growth to potential donors’ increased awareness of the 6

importance of long-term endowed funds to both the institution and its students, as well as good financial stewardship on the part of the university. Despite this growth, more endowments are needed in order to extend Husson’s financial aid efforts to students and support the growth of existing and new programs as well as campus infrastructure. “Endowment funds allow us to enhance the quality of our university while keeping tuition as low as possible,” said Clark. Husson Univerity is the most affordable private university in the state of Maine, thanks largely to the financial assistance provided by the school’s generous donors. For alumni and other individuals with connections to Husson University who have not yet considered the possibility of establishing an endowment fund, there are a number of flexible options available. “We work with each donor to come up with a customized charitable giving or estate plan,” said Clark. Some donors create an

endowment fund with one large gift; others establish gifting plans over a period of time to reach the $25,000 endowment fund limit, such as gifting $5,000 per year over a five-year period. Others set aside money for an endowment fund in their wills. Donors have the right to direct how their funds are used: “When donors provide a gift, they sit down with a representative who can ensure that their wishes are fulfilled,” said Clark. In addition to student scholarships, endowment funds are used to finance other programs that are important to the donor, such as a concert series or improvements to the school library. “This is the way to leave a longterm legacy to the institution,” said Clark. If you are interested in the possibility of establishing an endowment fund, please contact Husson’s Office of Advancement – Warren Caruso, Executive Director of Development, carusow@husson.edu, 207-992-1963 – for assistance and support in carrying out your wishes.

For Loyal Graduate, Husson was a “perfect fit” Warren Smith, ’65, is one of Husson University’s most loyal donors. Since 1991, he’s given to the college every single year without fail. “I’ve never accumulated much wealth,” says Smith, who, at 77, still works parttime as a branch manager/ broker at Dawson-Bradford Realtors, “but I was brought up to share. I always appreciated the college so much and always wanted to do something to help them.” Smith grew up in East Dixfield, a small town in western Maine. “Typical of those days, my family were rocky hillside dairy farmers,” he says. “We had an outhouse, and I went to a two-room schoolhouse. No one was talking about going to college.” After graduating high school, Smith joined the Air Force— an instrumental experience in his life. “The military exposed me to the good and bad of all of life.” His failure to make rank also showed him that if he wanted to move

up in the military or civilian workforce, a college education was the ticket he needed. Smith spent several years stationed at the Air Force base in Bangor, and decided to stay in town after finishing his time in the service, having “met a wonderful gal at church.” In 1961, he married his wife, Joanne; enrolled at Husson; and began working at a local hotel. It was a busy time for him, but he felt at home at Husson, as many returning veterans were attending school as well. “I loved the courses,” he says. “It was a perfect fit for me.” His years at Husson, culminating in a B.S. in Business Management, gave him the business skills he needed to begin working as an insurance adjuster for a local agency. For many years, he worked in both the insurance and real estate fields; today, he is “semi-retired” but still works halfdays at Dawson-Bradford. Smith and his wife still live in Bangor, and always try to make it to campus for the annual alumni holiday party. He has also kept in touch with many of his Husson classmates, who have each achieved excellence in the business field. “Husson helped set us all up for success.”

SCHOLARSHIP

Changing Lives with the Carlisle Family Husson University Scholarship Fund with several financial aid packages, including the Carlisle Family Husson University Scholarship Fund, a scholarship that is granted annually to a student with financial need from northern Penobscot county. “Without the scholarships, I wouldn’t have been able to attend Husson,” says Krapf.

Katie Krapf, a freshman at Husson University, has wanted to become an occupational therapist ever since seventh grade. “My best friend blew out her ACL, and I went to the physical and occupational therapy sessions with her,” she says. “I knew I wanted to help people recover from injuries, too.” She’s well on her way to achieving that mission: Currently, she’s studying for a B.S. in Health, and plans to follow that degree with a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy at Husson. It wasn’t always clear to Krapf if she would have the opportunity to pursue her educational goals. Coming from the small town of Springfield, Maine, her family didn’t have the financial means to pay for her college education. Krapf had always been an excellent student, though, so she applied for a number of scholarships—and Husson University came through

Bangor-area philanthropists David and Susan Carlisle created the scholarship endowment fund approximately 15 years ago. While neither of them attended Husson as undergraduates, their family has long been engaged in giving to the school. The residence facility

Women’s Philanthropy Council, which serves to inspire women as leaders and philanthropists today, and for generations to come. She had the opportunity to connect in person with Krapf and another Carlisle scholarship recipient at the annual Women’s Philanthropy Council Luncheon. “They were both delightful young women who fully deserve to succeed, and I believe they will,” Carlisle said. In February 2013, Susan was honored for her commitment to Husson with an Honorary Alumna degree at the school’s Alumni Hall of Fame event.

The scholarship Susan and David made possible tells students that someone they never met, believes in their potential Carlisle Hall is named for David’s grandfather, Prentiss & Carlisle timberland management firm cofounder George Carlisle, who was a generous benefactor in Husson’s early years. “Our family business has had many Husson graduates in key positions,” says David Carlisle. “We’ve always had a high regard for the school. They’ve done a lot for the Bangor community and for areas in which our company does business.” Susan serves as a trustee of Husson and is a member of the school’s

At the event, President Robert Clark honored the couple for their generosity. “The scholarship Susan and David made possible tells students that someone they never met, believes in their potential,” he said. “Scholarships are deeply appreciated by our student scholars who often come from families of limited means. By supporting education, Susan and David are opening the doors of opportunity and helping the next generation to prosper and thrive.”

Help transform students' lives through education and reduce your tax liability with an IRA rollover gift What is an IRA Rollover Gift? The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 ensures that in 2013, anyone age 70½ or older is allowed to donate from his or her IRA directly to charity without paying any income taxes on that distribution. There is no charitable deduction for the IRA rollover gift, but the amount of the distribution can be excluded completely from taxable income. This option may be most beneficial for alumni and friends who... ■ Must make a required minimum distribution from their IRA but do not need the income ■ Have exceeded their ability to claim an income tax deduction ■ Do not itemize their deductions

■ May have more of their Social Security income taxed by receiving additional income

As a donor shared, “It makes sense because the donation counts toward the mandatory required minimum distribution and no federal tax is due. There is no extra paperwork, can’t get any easier!” Distributions can be made for any amount up to $100,000 by December 31, 2013. Restrictions apply, so consult with your advisors to determine how such a gift would affect your overall tax and estate planning, to make the best choice for your personal financial situation.

APPRECIATION

Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon Brings Students and Donors Together Husson University has long been focused on helping students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Forty percent of our students are in the first generation of their family to attend college, and nearly a quarter come from families with household incomes below $25,000. These students work hard at Husson, and go on to achieve rich and rewarding careers—but their successes would not be possible without the assistance of the donors who give to Husson’s scholarship funds, enabling us to provide generous financial aid to students. On October 10th, the Women’s Philanthropy Council organized the second annual Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon, which was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor. The luncheon, which was attended by approximately 120 members of the Husson community, provided an opportunity for student scholarship recipients to meet their benefactors, and for both groups to learn more about how scholarship

funds were helping students at Husson. After a warm introduction by President Clark, one scholarship recipient, Leonard Soto ’14, gave a moving speech about how much he’d benefited from the Husson community’s generosity. Soto has received four scholarships during his time at the school: the Lajune S. Means Endowed Scholarship, the George Alden Trust Scholarship, the Wilfred E Cobb Scholarship, and the William Randolph Hearst Scholarship. “Without these scholarships and their donors, the degree I will be receiving in May would not have been possible,” said Soto. He vows that, once he launches his chosen career as a nurse practitioner, he will pay it forward by giving back to Husson’s scholarship fund each year. Soto’s talk was followed by a speech from Husson’s newly appointed Dean of the College of Business, Dr. Marie Hansen, regarding the growth of the school and its mission to integrate business and science in innovative

new programs and partnerships. “These internal and external partnerships are key to the continuing success at Husson University and the placement of our students in careers where they will individually excel,” said Hansen. The afternoon’s final speaker was Alice Trott, Chair of the Women’s Philanthropy Council and wife of former Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dick Trott. Her moving speech focused on thanking the donors for their contributions, and stressing the vital role that the scholarships will play in the students’ future—and the future of the community at large. “The students you support today will be the business and health care leaders of tomorrow,” said Trott. “They’ll be the professionals we’ll depend on to deliver our news and maintain law and order. Husson scholarship recipients will go on to manage sports teams, teach our children and help us recover from injuries. In short, they’ll influence everything we see and do.”
