Invitation for Public Comment Husson University – Institutional Self-Study Husson University will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit in the spring of 2013, by a team representing the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

The Commission on Institutions of Higher Education is one of seven accrediting commissions in the United States that provide institutional accreditation on a regional basis. Accreditation is voluntary and applies to the institution as a whole. The Commission, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, accredits approximately

240 institutions in the six-state New England region.

Husson University has been accredited by the Commission since 1974 and was last reviewed in 2003. Its accreditation by the New England Association encompasses the entire institution.

For the past year and a half, Husson University has been engaged in a process of self-study, addressing the Commission’s Standards for Accreditation. An evaluation team will visit the institution to gather evidence that the self-study is thorough and accurate. The team will

recommend to the Commission a continuing status for the institution. Following a review process, the Commission itself will take the final action. Public Comments must address substantive matters related to

the quality of the institution.

by April 24, 2013. The Commission cannot guarantee that comments received after that date will be considered.

Dear Alumni and Friends, As I write this letter, it is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and another semester is about to begin at Husson University.

Members of the Student Life staff are busy helping new students settle into the residence halls, while others are helping returning students get back into the swing of Husson life.

Although it may be a chilly day, the fire in the G. Peirce Webber Campus Center is burning, and the energy that comes with returning students is surely felt across campus.

If you look back to some of our recent Ledger issues, you’ll see just how quickly this institution continues to grow. You would read about how the new Living Learning Center has increased our ability to provide

It is a frigid seven degrees outside as I sit and write this letter. It is my third winter in Maine, and although it will take me another year or two to adjust to the weather, I am reminded so often of how fortunate I am to be here working at such a remarkable institution.

I spend an hour or two each week meeting with Paul Husson, who I know is near and dear to many of you. His stories are truly fascinating and have given me a great deal of

experiential learning opportunities and new residential living options, and that our newly renovated Dickerman Dining Center has improved menu options and the overall dining experience for our students. You would have seen photos from our latest commencement ceremony and Homecoming celebration – both of which were our largest yet.

We know that much of the Husson story has yet to be told. Our new strategic plan, which you can view at www.husson.edu, outlines initiatives with a clear focus – to transform student lives and advance student success. Students will have more opportunities to learn with a global awareness, to gain hands on experience with cutting-edge technology in state-of-the-art labs, and to have access to the support they need through student services and scholarships. Alumni will have more options to stay involved, from

insight and deep appreciation for how Husson has transformed the lives of our graduates. He has shared countless stories of what some of our alumni have gone on to do after Husson, many starting family businesses or climbing the ladder at major corporations. There have been equally as many stories about those who have made an incredible impact on their communities through their generosity and willingness to give back.

Along that same vein, your generosity and willingness to give back is why I write this letter today. I’d personally like to thank each and every one of our 2011-2012 donors listed in this report.

mentoring through our Career Center, to helping organize alumni gatherings we have planned throughout the country.

You, as a 2011-2012 donor, are very much a part of the successes you have read about, and those yet to be written. When Evelyn Lutz enrolled at Husson University more than 30 years ago, she was a nontraditional student in her late 40s. “I hesitated about going back to school,” she says.

But she was inspired by her late husband’s memories of attending Husson. “He spoke so highly of the school,” says Lutz. She was able to use his Veteran’s Benefits to pay for her coursework there.

She obtained her associate’s degree in Office Administration, and didn’t

travel far to begin her career: she quickly found a job as assistant to the financial aid director at Husson and worked there for four years. She and her husband, Gerald Palmer, are now semi-retired, running a hay business in Hermon, Maine.

In 1989, she made her first donation to Husson—a generous practice that she’s continued ever since. Lutz is Husson’s most consistent donor. “I believe very strongly in Husson and what it’s aiming to do,” Lutz says.

Although Palmer attended the University of Southern Maine, he is a major advocate for Husson as well. “My husband matches my

After Thomas E. Thornton, Jr. ’72, a Husson alum and recently appointed trustee, passed away after a battle with cancer last year, his friends Sue and Joe Cyr knew that they needed to do something to honor his memory.

Brenn Alexander’s father’s roots go back to King Alexander of Scotland. Her mother can trace her roots to the Clan of Gordon. Scotland is in her blood, and Alexander knew she was destined to traverse the North Sea. Last year, Alexander, a Husson junior, conducted months of research, discovered the University of Stirling, and set out to plan and pay for one month and two university courses in Stirling, Scotland.

A native of Sullivan, Maine, Alexander says, “I wanted an adventure, a new experience, and something that would stick with me for the rest of my life.”

Alexander applied for scholarships, but she could not find any related to her field of study—occupational therapy.

“That’s when I was introduced to Tom Martz, the Vice President for Advancement at Husson,” says Alexander.

Martz and his wife, Mary, were in the process of developing two scholarships to support study abroad opportunities for Husson students.

“Tom Martz earned his early childhood education in Paris, and believes international study is important for Husson students,” says Alexander. The couple, both artists, originally intended to fund students who were pursuing the arts, but they have expanded the scholarship to the study of humanities and literature both at Husson and abroad.

The couple had provided $3,000 to the scholarship fund. Brenn applied for the scholarship at the College of Science and Humanities, and it was granted to her.

“They barely knew me and yet they were making one of my dreams a reality,” says Alexander.

In addition to kayaking the North Sea, Alexander saw London from atop the London Eye, traveled to St. Andrews, the Scottish Highlands, the Loch Ness, Glasgow, and caught a glimpse of Prince William, Kate, and the Queen of England in Edinburgh.

The University of Stirling had few Scottish students on campus during

her mid-summer stay from June 15 to July 15, but she did see the Scottish equivalent of CSI being filmed near campus and Olympians training in the gym.

While the Olympians and royalty are good stories, Alexander says, the bonds she formed with her six flatmates, and the thrill of experiencing a new country with a different history, customs, food and overall lifestyle is what will stay with her.

“I saw movies about Scotland, but it’s not like being there,” she says.

Alexander loved the film Braveheart growing up, but seeing men on the street in kilts, hearing the Scottish brogue, getting to know the humor and style of a small foreign city is something she wants to do more of.

Women’s Philanthropy Council holds inaugural Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon On October 24th, the Husson University Women’s Philanthropy Council hosted the inaugural Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn. This year’s student recipients of endowed scholarships had an opportunity to meet with the generous donors who made their scholarships possible.

Alumni and friends of Husson were able to see the true impact of their generosity and our students were able

to share their own stories about what a tremendous difference our scholarship program makes. Husson’s more than 90 endowed scholarships provide critical support to our students, truly transforming generations of students’ lives.

The Husson University Women’s Philanthropy Council was formed to lead engagement efforts that inspire women to give of their time, talent, and resources to Husson University
