Mission Statement

The mission of the Intercollegiate program for men and women at St. Cloud State University is to provide quality athletic opportunities to men and women students who have specialized athletic interests and abilities. It is our belief that meaningful intercollegiate competitive experience will better enable the participants to make significant contributions to society. Finally, in spite of being in an era of uncertain state funding, SCSU is committed to providing a broad based program in which studentathletes can strive to pursue excellence in their chosen athletic and academic endeavors.

St. Cloud State Traditions: History of the Nickname

The Husky Nickname: St. Cloud State's nickname has gone through several changes over the years. Early nicknames included "Normals," "Teachers," "Bear Cats," "Peds," and "Flying Clouds."

There are several theories about how the nickname "Huskies" began to be used. One says that it is a result of a student contest. Another suggests that the name originated with the football team.

There was a story in the February 4, 1938, edition of the College Chronicle which referred to the "football huskies." Since huskies was not capitalized in the story, the author could have been referring to the team's size, and this possibly led to the nickname.

Another theory is that the nickname originated within the football team. "I think it occurred during Coach Kasch's days as football coach (1935-42)," said John Weisman, former SCSU Dean of Men and former coach.

"The team just started calling themselves the "Huskies."

Why the name was chosen or who exactly selected it remains unclear. The name could have been intended to mean "burly, robust or large," "one that is husky," or "a heavily coated working dog of the arctic region.”

Perhaps the nickname was meant to encompass all three meanings. Regardless of its origin, the Husky nickname continues to represent SCSU as a symbol and image of strength.

From Interstate 94 (East or West): Exit on County Road 75 (Reads St. Augusta and St. Cloud). Travel north on County 75 to Clearwater Road. Turn right. Proceed to 16th Street South.

Turn right. Follow street East around the curve. Proceed north.

Halenbeck Hall is on the right.

From Highway 10: Exit on 15th Avenue Southeast. Turn right. Proceed to University Drive. Turn left. Proceed to 5th Avenue South. Turn left. Halenbeck Hall is located at the corner of University Drive and 5th Ave. South.

Match Credentials

Admission to the Halenbeck Hall wrestling press area is restricted to the working press. Requests for working press passes and permission to broadcast matches must be made at least one week in advance to the SCSU Athletic Media Relations Director.

Only media representatives actually involved in the coverage of the match will be admitted to the press area.

Media passes should be picked up at the Halenbeck Hall Press Table or the AMR Office in Halenbeck Hall. Your media pass should be displayed at all times while you are in the arena.

Media Services

A complete scoring summary will be available to the media at the end of the match. Complete stats will also be available on the SCSU wrestling website (www.stcloudstate.edu/athletics).

Wrestlers and coaches from SCSU will be available for media interviews approximately 10 minutes after the match is completed. Interviews may be conducted in Halenbeck Hall, and a representative of the Athletic Media Relations Office can bring any requested players out for interviews. The SCSU locker room and athletic training room is closed to the media at all times.

Photo Passes

Video and Photo passes must be requested one week in advance. Videographers and photographers may operate from the floor level at Halenbeck Hall, but they must stay off of the mat.

Radio/Phone Lines/Internet Access

Radio space will be reserved for the official play-by-play stations designated by each visiting school. Other radio stations will be given space on a first-come, first-serve basis and on availability.

2010-11 S t . C loud S tate W restling F act B ook Tom Nelson joined the staff at St. Cloud State University as assistant athletic media relations director in 1996.

A 1983 graduate of North Central College in Naperville, Ill., Nelson serves as the University’s men’s hockey contact and also coordinates the athletic web site at SCSU.

Nelson previously worked at Aurora University and St. John’s University (Minn.) before making the move to St. Cloud State. An active member of CoSIDA, Nelson was a long-time member of that group’s Site Selection Committee. He has served as a media coordinator at numerous USA Hockey Player Development Camps and has been the media stewart for the MSHSL Class AA baseball tournament since 1997.

A former member of the C.W. McCall Fan Club and an avid Assistant Director of AMR collector of salt and pepper shakers and vintage fishing magazines, Tom Nelson Nelson resides in St. Cloud with his wife Colleen and their two children, Lauren and Patrick.

Director of Athletic Media Relations

Anne Abicht Anne Abicht joined the St. Cloud State University staff in January of 1985 as the Sports Information Director.

Since arriving on the SCSU campus, the athletic department moved its hockey program to NCAA Division I status, and added three women’s sports in women’s ice hockey, soccer and nordic skiing.

During this growth period, Abicht has overseen a growth in staff in the department now known as Athletic Media Relations.

SCSU has added a part-time office manager, two full-time assistants and two graduate assistants to assist in the coverage of the 21 sport program.

She received CoSIDA’s 25-Year Award in July of 2006 and CoSIDA’s Trailblazer Award in July of 2007. She is also a current member of the CoSIDA Board of Directors.

Abicht graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in mass communications and a minor in journalism. The Burnsville, Minn., native holds a master’s degree in sports management from St. Cloud State.

Anne and her husband Dennis Lorsung, reside in St. Cloud.

Celestine Stang joined the St. Cloud State University staff as the assistant athletic media relations director in December of 2005. Prior to joining the SCSU staff, Stang served as the Sports Information Director at Saint John’s University (Minn.) in nearby Collegeville from August-November of 2005. From 2003 to 2005, Stang served as a graduate assistant in the SCSU Athletic Media Relations office while earning her master’s degree in athletic administration.

After playing four years of basketball at SCSU from 1999-2003, Stang graduated with a bachelor’s of science in sport management and recreation in May of 2003. She has also served as a media coordinator at a few USA Hockey Player Development Camps and is a member of Assistant Director of AMR CoSIDA’s Social Committee. For the past three seasons, she has served as the regional coordinator for the softball Daktronics, Inc. All-Region Celest Stang award.

She enjoys raising rabbits, gardening and baking pies. A native of Redwood Falls, Minn., Stang and her husband Jacob reside in St. Aaron Swenson is in his second year as a graduate-assistant in pursuit of his Masters in Sports Management at St. Cloud State University. He comes to St. Cloud after working one year as the Sports Information Assistant at Augustana College. While in Sioux Falls, Swenson also worked as a freelance writer for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. Swenson graduated from SCSU in the spring of 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications & Minor in Marketing. During his last year in undergraduate studies at SCSU, he was the President of the Society of Professional Journalists and Managing Editor of the University Chronicle. Swenson grew up in Delano, Minn. and graduated from Delano High School in 2003, where he was a three-sport athlete in AMR Graduate Assistant football, basketball and baseball. He continues to pitch and play for the Delano Athletic’s in the North Star League.

Athletic Media Relations Office Manager

C loud S tate W restling F act B ook Dr. Morris Kurtz arrived at St. Cloud State in the fall of 1984 following athletic administrative positions at both Penn State University and Memphis State University. At SCSU he served as Director of Men’s Athletics from 1984 to 1995 and as Director of Athletics of the combined men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletics since 1996.

One of Dr. Kurtz’s most significant achievements has been to enhance the department’s fundraising program utilizing innovative solicitation techniques, marketing, promotional strategies and increased community involvement and support.

The community support that has developed has been overwhelming.

Under Dr. Kurtz’s direction, the Athletic Department has experienced tremendous growth and in doing so has become a rallying point for Director of Athletics SCSU faculty, staff, students, alumni, the city of St. Cloud, as well as the Dr. Morris Kurtz surrounding communities throughout Central Minnesota. The Husky Athletic Program has become nationally recognized and has established itself as a competitive force in intercollegiate athletics while producing the highest caliber of student-athletes.

Dr. Kurtz, his wife Janell Kurtz, a Professor in the G.R. Herberger College of Business, reside in St. Cloud and have a son David and daughter Stacey.

Dr. Sue Becker was named the associate director of athletics/senior women’s administrator for the Huskies in the fall of 2006.

She is responsible for directing the internal operations of the SCSU athletic department. Dr. Becker also oversees daily compliance operations in the athletic department.

A 1982 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Dr. Becker served as the assistant softball and volleyball coach at Emporia State University (KS) while earning her master’s degree. Dr. Becker served as SCSU head softball coach from 1985 to 1991 and also from 1995 to 1997. She led the Huskies to a 242-162 overall record and two NCAA playoff appearances. From 1991 to 1994, Dr. Becker completed her doctorate degree at Oregon State University.

Associate Athletic

In 1997, Dr. Becker was named the Athletic Department’s Director compliance officer and she has also served as an associate professor Dr. Sue Becker in SCSU’s department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports Science since 1984.

At UW-Eau Claire, Dr. Becker was a three-year letterwinner in volleyball and was a volleyball student assistant coach in 1982. A native of Stitzer, Wis., Dr. Becker resides in St. Cloud.

After coaching men’s and women’s track and field and football at St. Cloud State, Tracy Dill was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Marketing, Promotions and Fundraising in September of 1999. Since that time, he has been responsible for promoting, marketing and fundraising for the 21-sport SCSU athletic department. He has been instrumental in creating added visibility and broadening the SCSU branding program for intercollegiate athletics.

Dill joined the SCSU athletic department in 1985 as an assistant football coach. In 1988, in addition to his football responsibilities, he was named head men’s track and field coach. In 1995, he resigned from his football coaching duties and became the head coach for both men’s and women’s track and field. As the men’s track coach, he coached 15 North Associate Athletic Central Conference Indoor Track Champions and 19 NCC Outdoor Director Champions. He coached three NCC Champions each in women’s indoor Tracy Dill track and outdoor track. In addition, he coached 21 All-Americans and two National Champions.

Dill is a native of Keota, Iowa. He has an undergraduate degree from William Penn College in Iowa and his master’s from St. Cloud State. He and his wife Kristy reside in St. Cloud and have two sons, Trey and Tye.

University President

Dr. Earl H. Potter III Dr. Earl H. Potter III has been President of St. Cloud State University since July 2007. President Potter leads Minnesota’s second largest university offering an affordable, high-quality education and well-rounded college experience for students who hail from Minnesota and around the world. Under his leadership there is a strong commitment to student success, academic distinction, global education, diversity and community partnerships.

President Potter has established himself as a leader who envisions the University as a driving force for progress and problem solving in the region and a source of great pride for the community and the state. The University community has been energized by his forward-looking perspectives and his innovative approach to bringing about positive change.

In addition to his duties as President of St. Cloud State University and responsibilities to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, President Potter serves on the City of St. Cloud’s Create CommUNITY Steering Committee, Initiative Foundation Board of Trustees, Minnesota Campus Compact Board of Directors, United Way of Central Minnesota Board of Directors, St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and other community task forces and initiatives.

Previously, Dr. Potter was executive vice president and provost at Southern Oregon University, dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University; dean of the School of Management at Lesley University; director for organizational development and employment services at Cornell University; associate dean for academics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy; a fellow for the American Council on Education in the Office of the Chancellor at the University of Colorado; and chief negotiator for management and head of the Department of Economics and Management at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

President Potter holds a Ph.D. in organizational psychology and a master’s degree in psychology, both from the University of Washington; and a bachelor’s degree in psychology with honors from Williams College. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1969 to 1993 and retired at the rank of captain.

Dr. Potter and his wife Christine Marshall Potter have adult children.

THE GRANITE CITY . . .

The city of St. Cloud, home to St. Cloud State University, is located in the heart Minnesota’s scenic Central Lakes Region along the wooded banks of the Mississippi and Sauk Rivers -- 65 miles northwest of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.

St. Cloud serves as the commercial and business hub for over 160,000 people and three counties. The area is at the center of one of Minnesota's fastest growing metropolitan area.

Incorporated in 1856, St. Cloud served as a stop on the famed Red River Trail. The city’s location on the Mississippi River, helped St. Cloud grow as a center for the lumber industry. Another local resource closely identified with the region is granite. The first granite in the area was quarried in 1869, and the industry rapidly helped St. Cloud gain the nickname “Granite City.”

In addition to a strong economic environment, St. Cloud offers very ample and diverse opportunities in education, recreation and the arts. Some of those highlights include nearby access to top-notch fishing, camping and hunting; renowned international gardens (across the river from campus); a lively downtown retail and entertainment district and great shopping at the region’s largest mall - Crossroads Center and along the city’s Division Street.

The St. Cloud metropolitan area is comprised of the three counties of Stearns, Benton and Sherburne, and is the political, cultural, commercial, and manufacturing center for all of central Minnesota. Access to St. Cloud is easy, with the city served daily by bus (Greyhound) and train (Amtrak). The St. Cloud Airport offers service for private planes, while a bus link to the Northstar commuter rail in nearby Big Lake began regular daily service in 2010.

ST. CLOUD STATE FACILITIES FIRST CLASS PROGRAMS...FIRST CLASS FACILITIES St. Cloud State University's tradition of excellence in athletics is mirrored by the many outstanding athletic facilities that are featured on the SCSU campus.

The majority of SCSU's home sporting events take place at the following locations on campus: Halenbeck Hall, Husky Stadium, Selke Field, Dick Putz Field, and the National Hockey Center.

HISTORIC SELKE FIELD: Selke Field is the home to Husky softball,

which placed third in the nation in 2004. The softball diamond is located in the southeast corner of the Selke Field athletic complex. Bleachers and two dugouts complete the playing area. In addition, the SCSU baseball team has a practice field at Selke, and SCSU students use the facility for intramural soccer and touch football.

HUSKY STADIUM: The newest addition to the SCSU facilities list is

Husky Stadium, which opened in September 2004. This multi-purpose facility offers seating for 4,198 spectators and is the home to SCSU football and soccer. The field overlooks the scenic Mississippi River and features a stateof-the-art synthetic playing surface along with lights for night play. In the winter months, the field is covered with an inflatable bubble that provides an outstanding practice space for many of the SCSU athletic teams and SCSU’s recreation sports programs. Other features of the facility include a press box, President’s Suite, concession stands, ticket booths and bathroom facilities.

The stadium is connected to Halenbeck Hall by a new student recreation facility that features a massive fitness center, climbing walls, classrooms, dance studios, snack bar, office space and storage locations.

HALENBECK HALL: Halenbeck Hall was completed and dedicated in

1965. The main gymnasium of Halenbeck Hall has a seating capacity of 6,451.

Volleyball, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, and swimming all compete in the main area of Halenbeck. In the summer of 2001, a new wooden floor, arena seating and scoreboard were installed, which makes Halenbeck one of the best courts in the NSIC. The Halenbeck Aquatics Center has seating capacity for 500 spectators. Its features include a six-lane pool and a diving well with one and three meter boards.

HALL OF FAME: Halenbeck Hall is home to the SCSU Athletic Hall

of Fame, which was completed in the spring of 1996. The Hall of Fame is located in the south lobby of the main gymnasium and houses the Hall of Fame plaques, as well as trophy cases for each of the Huskies' sports. The building also houses several classrooms, a complete computer lab and offices for the coaches and athletic administrative staff.

HALENBECK HALL SOUTH: Halenbeck Hall South was completed in 1980. It provides SCSU with an indoor training facility for track, soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis. The major feature of Halenbeck South is an activity center and multiple purpose area bordered by a running track. A new surface was installed in the Halenbeck South Fieldhouse during the summer of 2006. The facility also houses six regulation size racquetball courts, a wrestling practice room, intramural offices, climbing wall and a human performance laboratory. To the east of Halenbeck and Halenbeck South are outdoor tennis courts.

NORDIC SKI: SCSU's nordic ski team practices at nearby Riverside Park,

which is located directly across the Mississippi River from the SCSU campus.

The Mississippi River also provides many recreation opportunities for the outdoor sports enthusiast, including fishing, canoeing and hiking.

National Hockey Center is home to Husky hockey and opened its doors in December of 1989. Its main features include two Olympic size sheets of ice measuring 200' by 100'. The main rink has a seating capacity for 5,763 fans and sports five VIP boxes located on the east end of the arena. Twelve locker rooms, a fully-equipped athletic training room, a fitness center, an equipment and drying room, a players lounge, classroom, manager's office, coaches offices and two Zambonis fill the lower level.

THE MAC: Baseball is played at the St. Cloud Municipal

Athletic Complex, located at the west end of St. Cloud. The complex features two of the finest baseball fields in the state - Dick Putz Field and Joe Faber Field.

WEIGHT TRAINING: St. Cloud State athletes have access to two weight training rooms. Athletes can train in the well-equipped, spacious, free weight rooms in Halenbeck and the NHC.

ATHLETIC TRAINING: St. Cloud State athletes have access to two athletic training rooms. Athletes can get treatment in the well-equipped, spacious, training rooms in Halenbeck and the NHC.

GIVING BACK TO ST. CLOUD HUSKY WRESTLING PROVIDES A HELPING HAND IN THE COMMUNITY AND ON CAMPUS The St. Cloud State University wrestling program and the entire St. Cloud State University Athletic Department annually provides many hours of volunteer service for the St. Cloud area and the campus commuity.

Over the years, the St. Cloud State teams have participated in reading programs for local youths, providing a helping hand at the University’s annual move-in day for students moving into the campus dormitories, Mississippi River clean-up, Make-AWish fundraisers, food drives and help with local emergency relief.

These are just a few examples of the many ways that St. Cloud State University Athletics give back to the community that surrounds and supports that in St. Cloud and on the campus at St. Cloud State University.

He is the 13th coach in the history of the St. Cloud State University wrestling program, which dates back to 1949-50.

Costanzo begins his 121th season overall as a college head coach. He has a career record of 100-512 while coaching 98 National Qualifiers, 41 All-Americans, 2 National Champions and 36 NWCA AllAcademic recipients. His overall record at SCSU currently stands at 39-21 In 2009-10, SCSU posted a 14-7 overall record and placed 7th in the nation at the NCAA Division II championships. At the 2010 NCAA Super Regional, the Huskies placed 2nd and SCSU also placed third in the NSIC race at 5-2 in 2009-10. SCSU advanced eight grapplers to the NCAA finals in 2010, and they also saw four of those athletes earn All-American status in 2010. This marked SCSU’s best national finish since 1983.

In 2008-09, Costanzo’s Huskies finished their campaign with an 8-5 (5-2 NSIC) mark. The Huskies also advanced eight wrestlers to the NCAA Division II Championships and they saw three of those wrestlers earn All-American status. At the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships, SCSU placed 8th as a team.

In 2006, Costanzo led Dana College to the NAIA National Championship (with a tourney record 193 points) and a NWCA National Duals Championship. His squads while at Dana College won Great Plains Athletic Conference titles in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. In addition, his teams claimed Regional Championships in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2006. The Vikings finished with top 10 finishes at the NAIA National Championships in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Costanzo’s student-athletes have enjoyed success off the mat as well. In the last four seasons, his wrestling teams have recorded top-20 grade point averages nationally - as recorded by the NAIA and NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association. In 2005-06, while at Dana College, his team finished in 2nd place with a team grade point average of a 3.175. In 2006-07, his SCSU wrestler’s finished in 14th place with a GPA of 3.029. In 2007-08, the Huskies finished in 8th place with a GPA of 3.219. In 200809, the Huskies finished in 19th place. During the 2009-10 campaign, the SCSU Huskies finished 2nd in the nation among DII teams with a team GPA of 3.354.

In 2003, Costanzo was credited with the NAIA Robert Bubb Coaching Excellence Award which epitomizes the qualities and characteristics of a role model and mentor for developing young student-athletes.

In 2005, he served as the NWCA All-Star team coach at Oklahoma State University. Costanzo received the NWCA and NAIA Coach of the Year honors in 2006, and gained NAIA Regional Coach of the Year accolades in 2005 and 2006.

Costanzo was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American and two-time North Central Conference champion for the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He placed seventh in 1993, third in 1994 and third in 1995 at the NCAA Championships. Costanzo was named native Nebraskan Collegiate Wrestler of the Year in 1994. He currently ranks as high as seventh on UNO’s all-time win list with 133 career victories as a collegiate wrestler.

For his wrestling accomplishments as a student-athlete, Costanzo was inducted into the 2006 NSWCA Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

A native of Bennington, Nebraska, Costanzo has a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Emporia State University. He and his wife Nancy have five children: Cassandra, Sam, Katie, Brock and Lacey.

SIKORA Derek Sikora will begin his first season as an assistant coach at St. Cloud State University in 2010-11. Sikora was the head wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2009-10, following four seasons as a Blugolds assistant coach.

“I am very excited to have Derek Sikora as my lead assistant wrestling coach,” said Coach Steve Costanzo. “Derek comes highly recommended on the mat and his passion and dedication to the sport should pay immediate dividends to the Husky wrestling program. I am confident that he will help SCSU wrestling take that next step and get us to where we want to go.”

A two-sport athlete at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Sikora was a 2006 National Wrestling Champion, a three-time All-American, threeyear captain, four-year letterwinner and two-time WIAC Champion. He also earned four letters in football where he was a two-time First Team AllConference player, two-time Team MVP, two-time All-Region pick and a team captain.

Following his playing career Sikora was a substitute teacher and para educator in the Oshkosh and Eau Claire school districts.

His coaching experience includes working with young wrestlers in the Wisconsin Cadet Junior National Team program and the Train Like a Titan Youth Wrestling Club. He aided the Cadet program in its most successful season in 2007 guiding 16 All-Americans at the Cadet National Championships.

In 2006 he joined the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire coaching staff as an assistant football and wrestling coach. During the 2007-08 wrestling season, Sikora was the Head Assistant Wrestling Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He returned to Eau Claire in 2008 as an assistant wrestling coach and took over as head coach in 2009.

“I am honored and thankful for the opportunity to work with a great wrestling program. I look forward to working with Coach Costanzo and the rest of the staff as well as continuing to build toward a national championship,” said Sikora.

WAINWRIGHT Cy Wainwright enters his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Huskies.

A native of Green Cove Springs, Florida, Wainwright was a national champion and two-time NCAA Division II All-American for Newberry College. He led his team to a runner-up finish at the 2009 NCAA DII Championships. Wainwright holds school records with longest win streak (38), wins in a season (42) and wins in a career (124). He finished his 2008-09 campaign with an unblemished 36-0 record and an overall record of 124-22.

Wainwright earned his bachelor’s degree in Education from Newberry College in 2009 and is pursuing a master’s degree in sports management from SCSU. “Cy is a fantastic addition to the Husky wrestling program,” said Coach Steve Costanzo.

LANG Volunteer Assistant Coach • 4th Season Jeremy Lang enters his fifth season as a volunteer assistant coach for his alma mater SCSU. Lang is a native of Springfield, MN and a 1993 graduate of Springfield High School.

He was a five-year letter-winner in wrestling, three-time Minnesota High School state qualifier and a three-time All-State recipient in wrestling and placed fifth at state his senior year. He competed for the Huskies from 1993-99 where he was a three-year letterwinner for SCSU and a three-time All-Conference recipient in the tough North Central Conference. Lang earned his Bachelor’s degree in local and urban affairs from SCSU in 1999. Currently, he is employed by Edina Realty in St. Cloud. He resides in St. Cloud with his two children Piper and Larkin.

“We look forward to having Jeremy back on our coaching staff this season,” said Coach Steve Costanzo. “He has helped us tremendously the past three seasons as a volunteer in our program.”

PETERSON Volunteer Assistant Coach • 2nd Season John Peterson, an Olympic champion, two-time Olympic medalist, three-time World Cup champion and a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, will be assisting the St. Cloud State University wrestlers this season with personal development.

Peterson earned a silver medal as a freestyle wrestler at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany, then won the 180.5-pound freestyle gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada. He earned World Cup championships in 1973, 1975 and 1980. As a collegiate wrestler at Wisconsin-Stout, he was an NAIA All-American (fifth place) in 1971 and earned three conference titles. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1986.

He has shared his faith with people around the world, working with Athletes In Action and Campus Crusade for Christ. Along with his brother, fellow Olympic wrestling champion Ben Peterson, the duo founded Camp of Champs in 1977. The Wisconsin-based camp combines intense training and competition with recreation and character training from a biblical perspective.

PADGETT Student Assistant Coach • 2nd Season Brad Padgett enters his second season as a student assistant coach for the Huskies.

A native of Buckley, Washington, Padgett was a two-time NCAA Division II AllAmerican and two-time North Region champion for the SCSU Huskies. Padgett placed fourth in 2008 and third in 2009 at the NCAA Championships. He was named Dean Weisman wrestler of the Year in 2008 and 2009. He amassed a two-year mark of 60-15 for the Huskies. In addition, Padgett was a two-time NJCAA All-American for Highline Community College.

In May, Padgett will be completing his bachelor’s degree in physical education from SCSU. “I am looking forward to working with Brad this year as a member of our coaching staff,” said Coach Steve Costanzo. “Brad is a great communicator and is an excellent technician. We will continue to look to him for his leadership.”

MACK Volunteer Assistant Coach • 1st Season Tony Mack was a All-State wrestler and track sprinter for Staples-Motley High school.

A two-time MSHSL wrestling state qualifier, he took 3rd place at state in 2000. In 2001, Mack was a member of the State Championship 4x100 Relay team. After high school, Mack served his country in the United States Air Force for five years. Mack is working toward his degree at St. Cloud State. He resides in St. Cloud along with his wife Leann.

Huskies Looking to Take it to the Top in 2010-11 As coach Steve Costanzo enters his fifth season at the helm of the St. Cloud State University wrestling program, the Huskies are poised to take yet another step on the ladder of success that SCSU has been climbing over the past three seasons.

The Huskies’ theme this season is “Rising to the Top” and this certainly reflects the outlook for the upcoming 2010-11 season.

“This marks my fifth season with the team and it has really been a work in progress,” Costanzo said.

“I have been fortunate to work with a program that has been built with help from our former coaches, parents and our alumni. These people have certainly helped build the winning tradition of Husky wrestling over the years...and I am just proud to be part of the tradition.”

On the subject of this year, Costanzo and the Huskies should be prepared to make another charge at both the regional and national Jake Kahnke level in NCAA Division II wrestling.

In 2009-10, the Huskies charted a solid 14-7 overall record, which included a 5-2 third place mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

At the 2010 NCAA Division II Regional, the Huskies repeated with another second place finish and also qualified eight wrestlers for the NCAA finals.

To cap the campaign, SCSU finished 7th at the 2010 NCAA Division II championships. This performance equals the Huskies’ best-ever finish at the NCAA Division II finals - a mark they also hit in 1983. This was also SCSU’s 8th top-10 place finish at the NCAA championships since 1975.

The outlook is bright for SCSU this season as Costanzo and the Huskies will bring back seven of those NCAA qualifiers and all four of the Huskies’ 2010 All-Americans.

“On paper, this looks to be a very promising season,” Costanzo said. “We will be bringing back a lot of experience this season and we also will benefit from an outstanding recruit classs, which will help push our guys and make us a better team.”

The Huskies will also benefit from a large senior class this winter, which will provide outstanding leadership on the mat and in the wrestling room. This groups includes seniors Westy Hanson (133/141), Gabe Suarez (141), John Sundgren (157), Derek Skala (184), Erik Rogness (197) and Chad Kubasch (149/157).

“These seniors are the heart of this team,” Costanzo said.

“This type of leadership will be one of the keys to our success in 2010-11.”

Here is a rundown of each weight class for the Huskies in 2010-11: 125-Pounds: Redshirt freshman Zach Stewart (Green Bay, Wis.) will be a name to watch at 125-pounds this winter after

gaining 18 wins as an unattached wrestler in 2009-10. His season also included two tournament champhionships at Moorhead and Worthington. He will be pushed for mat time this winter by freshman Dylan Wright from Minnesota prep power house Simley H.S., and freshman Cody Paulsen, who prepped at Totino-Grace H.S. Trent Herold (East Bethel), a starter in 2009-10, is expected to redshirt for the Huskies in 2010-11.

133-Pounds: Senior Westy Hanson (Crookston) will be a top contender at this weight class but look for a strong push by JUCO transfer Eric Ellington (Fairview Heights, Ill.), who gained two All-America honors during his tenure at Rend Lake C.C. down in Illinois. Cullan Morrissey (Lena, Wis./Oconto H.S.) and Tyler Mathison (Fremont, Neb.) are other talent who will add depth at this division.

141-Pounds: Senior Gabe Suarez (Las Vegas, Nev.) is a three-time NCAA qualifier, who earned All-America honors at 141-pounds in 2010. A four-year starter, Suarez has also been a four-year team captain.

“Gabe has had an outstanding career at SCSU,” Costanzo said.

“He keeps getting better every season, and if he can stay healthy, I believe that Gabe has a shot a national championship this winter.”

SCSU’s depth shows at this position as Suarez will be pushed by freshman Matt Liebforth (Lemont, Ill.), redshirt sophomore Chad Schultz (Mauston, Wis.) and freshman Dustin McKinney (Luck, Wis.).

149-Pounds: Fans will probably do a double-take at this weight class thanks to the presence of two Jacob Horn’s on the roster at SCSU. True sophomore Jacob R. Horn (St. Michael) moved into a starting spot last winter due to an injury in the SCSU line-up to Jacob Roberts. He responded with 22 victories last year for SCSU. “We pulled him out of his redshirt season last year, and he really came into his own,” Costanzo said of Jacob R. Horn.

The other half of the Huskies’ Horn duo is redshirt junior Jacob D. Horn (Ephrata, Wash.), who will add depth at 149 along with freshman Josh Howk out of Blue Springs H.S. in Missouri, redshirt sophomore Jake Tabbert (Inver Grove Heights) and senior Chad Kubasch (New Germany).

157-Pounds: Another one of SCSU’s mainstays is expected to anchor the 157-position. Senior John Sundgren (Blaine) is a three-time national qualifier and a four-year starter for SCSU at 157.

“He is another athlete with lots of experience and national recognition,” Costanzo said. “If John can stay healthy, we look for another outstanding year from him in 2010-11.”

Redshirt sophomore Josh Shamus O’Grady Joriman (Lino Lakes - 12 wins in 2009-10) and redshirt junior Joe Andersen (Bemidji - 7 wins in 200910) will add depth for the Huskies at 157-pounds. Michael Cullan (Coon Rapids), Charlie Janssen (Forest Lake), Michael Kairouz (Agoura Hills, Calif.), Matt Piersak (Shoreview) are other names expected to fortify the 157-pound class.

165-Pounds: Junior Tad Merritt (Canby) is looking to add another All-America plaque to the SCSU trophy case. He placed 3rd in 2009 and 5th in 2010, and Costanzo sees that trend continuing in 2011.

“Tad has the experience and Gabe Suarez skills to be a national champion,” Costanzo said. “If he can stay healthy and we can get him to peak at the right time, there is no question that he will be one of the favorites at 165-pounds this winter.

“Tad is a tremendous leader... one who really leads by example.

He’s a grinder and a bruiser, and he is always on you. Tad only knows one way and this is to wrestle hard... he is super intense and relentless.”

Depth at 165 will be added by redshirt sophomore Kurt Salmen (Dassel) and rookie Joey Falde (Maple Plain/Orono H.S.).

174-Pounds: SCSU will Lucas Munkelwitz benefit from the return of another All-American at 174-pounds this winter. Redshirt sophomore Shamus O’Grady (Coon Rapids) is back after earning a 6th place finish at nationals in 2010. At 21-15, O’Grady was one of seven SCSU wrestlers to collect 20-plus wins last winter. O’Grady is also a member of the SCSU track and cross country teams. Freshman Ben McPhail out of Pine Island H.S. will add depth for the Huskies at 174.

184-Pounds: Senior Derek Skala (Owatonna) is yet another three-time NCAA qualifier who returns for the Huskies this winter. Skala chalked up a 26-10 record last winter and captured top 184-pound honors at the 2010 NCAA regional. Skala’s status for 2010-11 is uncertain as injury concerns may force him to take a medical redshirt this season. If that is the situation this winter, SCSU should be in good hands at 184-pounds with redshirt freshman Mic Berg (Inver Grove Heights), who posted a 22-win season as an unattached wrestler. Senior Erik Rogness (Buffalo) will also add depth at 184-pounds and 197-pounds for the Huskies.

197-Pounds: Redshirt junior Luke Munkelwitz (Forest Lake) topped SCSU’s win list last year with a 30-9 record. He also earned his second trip to the NCAA nationals and he will be a three-year starter this year.

“Luke was one match away from being an All-American last year,” Costanzo said. “He’s a little bigger this year, and Luke has really grown into his weight class. We expect a good season out of him, and I think he is ready to take that next step.”

SCSU’s reserve strength at 197-pounds will be provided by junior Josh Antonneau (Hartland, Wis. - 11 wins in 2009-10) and redshirt sophomore Josh Conrath (Waseca).

285-Pounds: A transfer from Division I Old Dominion, redshirt sophomore Jacob Kahnke (Shakopee) made a quick impact in the world of Division II wrestling as he captured 4th place at the NCAA finals in 2010. Kahnke tied Munkelwitz for the team’s win lead with a 30-7 overall record.

“Jacob is back this year and he is bigger, stronger and faster,” Costanzo said. “If he stays healthy, he will certainly be one of the national contenders at 285-pounds in 2011.”

To complete the picture, the Huskies will be boosted at 285-pounds by redshirt freshman Chris Brassell (Park Ridge, Ill.) and newcomer Scott Hines (Fairmont).

Yes, on paper the Huskies appear to be set for a solid showing in 2010-11. The skill and depth will be needed as SCSU will once again face a formidable schedule that will be an outstanding test as the Huskies prepare for the NCAA championships on March 11-12 in Kearney, Neb. To open the season, SCSU will host the annual Black-Red Classic in Halenbeck. The Huskies will then head to the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa to begin the actual 2010-11 schedule.

Another early season test for SCSU will be the UW-LaCrosse Duals, along with the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open in Halenbeck Hall on Dec. 11.

After the holidays, the Huskies will travel to Arizona for the Grand Canyon Duals in Phoenix on Jan. 1, and they will also travel to the prestigious NWCA Division II National Duals on Jan. 8-9 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

SCSU will then move into the heart of its dual meet schedule that will include a full slate of matches against NSIC opponents and several top NCAA Division II and III non-conference opponents - including defending national champion Nebraska Omaha.

The season will conclude with dates at the 2011 NCAA Regional on Feb. 27 (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and the 2011 NCAA championship on March 11-12 (Kearney, Neb.).

“Our schedule will be an outstanding test for us in 2010-11, and it will certainly help us meet our goals of achieving success at the NCAA regional meet and the NCAA nationals,” Costanzo said.

2010 NCAA TOURNAMENT REVIEW - HUSKIES PLACE 7TH: St. Cloud State wrestling’s Jacob Kahnke earned a fourth place finish at 285-pounds to earn All-America status and lead the Huskies at the NCAA Division II championships on March 12-13 in Omaha, Neb. Gabe Suarez (141), Tad Merritt (165) and Shamus O’Grady (174) also earned All-America honors for SCSU. As a team, the Huskies placed 7th overall with 44.5 points. Host Nebraska-Omaha won the tournament with 131 points to repeat as DII champs, while Augustana was second with 72 points. Upper Iowa (67), UN-Kearney (67), UW-Parkside (55.5) and Minnesota State (52.5) completed the top seven teams.

Of note, this marks the Huskies best team finish at the NCAA championships since a 7th place finish in 1983 - more than 25 years ago.

Listed below are the results from the individual weight brackets for SCSU: 133-Pounds: SCSU’s Shane McQuade suffered a 13-9 loss to Cory Bowers of Gannon in first round action. McQuade will now advance to action in the wrestlebacks. McQuade won his opening match in the wrestlebacks with a 6:00 pinfall against Jan Steven Ulinksi of Findlay. McQuade bowed out of tournament action in the next round with an 8-0 loss to Scott Berens of Central Oklahoma.

141-pounds: Gabe Suarez posts an 8-4 victory over Daniel Genetin of Ashland. Suarez then suffered a tough 8-3 loss to top seed Jeremy Parker of Limestone in the quarterfinal round. Suarez stayed alive to advance to Saturday action with a big 8-2 win over Dallas Evans of Shippensburg. On March 13, Suarez opened the day with a 15-6 loss to Andre Harrison of Fort Hays State. In the match for seventh place, Suarez lost a 15-4 decision to Josh Hensley of Adams State. Suarez gained AllAmerica notice for his 8th place finish at the national tournament.

157-pounds: SCSU’s John Sundgren falls 6-5 against Jon Jackson of Ashland in first round action. In the wrestlebacks, Sundgren picked up a 16-10 victory over Kyle Francis of Western State. Sundgren completed his run at the nationals with a close 6-5 loss to Michael Williams of UNC-Pembroke.

165-pounds: Tad Merritt advances to the second round of the championship bracket with a 3:14 pinfall over Wisconsin-Parkside’s Matt Gille. In the quarterfinal match, Merritt suffered a 6-5 loss to Victor Carazo of Grand Canyon. In the wrestlebacks, Merritt stayed on track with a 6-2 decision over Jake Varilek of Grand Canyon. On Saturday, Merritt gained a 2:08 fall against Gavin Nelson of Augustana in the consolation round. Merritt then lost a tough 7-6 decision against Ryan Pankoke of UNO. In the battle for fifth place, Merritt trailed early in the match, but he rebounded to gain a pinfall victory over Taylor May of Nebraska-Kearney at 6:24. This mark’s the second consecutive season that Merritt has gained All-America honors.

174-Pounds: SCSU’s Shamus O’Grady rolls to a 16-4 major decison over Zack Frazier of Western State. O’Grady maintained his title hopes in the quarterfinals with a 6:21 pinfall victory over top seed J.J. Davis of UNC-Pembroke. O’Grady ended his run in the championship bracket with a 14-6 loss to Luke Rynish of UW-Parkside. In the wrestlebacks, O’Grady lost a 10-6 match against Mitch Norton of Upper Iowa. O’Grady lost to Christopher Barrick of Shippensburg in the battle for fifth place by a score of 6-3. O’Grady also gained All-America status with his sixth place finish at the tournament.

184-pounds: SCSU’s Derek Skala falls into the consolation bracket with a tough 7-6 loss to Shane Mallory of East Stroudsburg State. Skala then added a 6-1 victory in the wrestlebacks over Jeffery Havelka of Findlay. He completed his trip to Omaha in the next round with a 9-7 setback against Charlie Pipher of Western State.

197-Pounds: SCSU’s Lucas Munkelwitz collects a 6:25 pinfall victory over Joe Treml of UW-Parkside in first round action. In the quarterfinal round, Munkelwitz dropped a 6-0 decision against Donovan McMahill of Western State. In the wrestlebacks, Munkelwitz finished his tournament with a 5-4 loss to Justin McKain of Nebraska-Kearney.

John Sundgren 285-Pounds: SCSU’s Jake Kahnke charted a lightning fast pin at :33 over Jesse Boggs of New Mexico Highlands in the first round at 285-pounds. In a well-played match in the quarterfinals, Kahnke rolled with a 2-1 victory over Christopher Dempsey of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. In the semi’s, Kahnke lost a close 3-2 decision against Elijah Madison of Nebraska-Omaha. Kahnke earned a spot in the third place bout thanks to a 4-1 victory over Charlie Alexander of Western State in the wrestlebacks.

Kahnke went on to finish in fourth place at the championships as he lost a close overtime decision of 4-3 against Dustin Finn of Central Oklahoma. This marks the first
