TEAM HISTORY St. Cloud State University has enjoyed a rich basketball tradition dating back to the turn of the century. The following is a brief history of the program along with highlights from nine decades of SCSU hoops. The intercollegiate basketball program at SCSU most likely grew from various club and intramural programs that were active on campus in the late 1890’s. The earliest records of a “true“ intercollegiate program date back to the 1901 season. 1901 - The earliest record of SCSU basketball shows the Huskies suffering a 13-10 loss to Minneapolis Central High School. SCSU went on to collect wins over Park Rapids and Brainerd that season. 1903 - R. Warren Hull coached SCSU to a perfect 6-0 record, which included a 53-0 victory over Anoka High School. 1904 - Legendary SCSU coach George Henry “Red” Lynch was hired to coach football and basketball. He coached the SCSU cagers from 1904 through 1929 and again in 1946. Lynch went on to serve as an instructor at SCSU until his retirement in 1953. 1909-20 - The records during this time are limited but accounts show that SCSU brought home titles in 1909, 1910, 1913 and 1920. Conference affiliations at that time were loosely based. 1923 - SCSU joins its first true intercollegiate conference along with teams from the Minnesota state teacher colleges and the junior colleges. Coach Lynch directed SCSU to a title that season with a 10-0 record. 1930 - John Weisman is named as head coach and he leads SCSU to conference title with a 9-5 record. SCSU also opened Eastman Hall home of Husky basketball until the opening of Halenbeck Hall in the 1960’s. 1932 - SCSU enters the Northern Teacher’s Athletic Conference as a charter member. This conference would later become known as the State Teacher’s College Conference of Minnesota and in 1962 it switched its name to the Northern Intercollegiate Conference. 1934 - Ed Colletti named head coach. 1936 - Warren Kasch named head coach. He went on to coach the Huskies for 11 seasons, while posting a 121-73 record. 1941 - Coach Kasch leads SCSU to its first NIC title with a 13-3 record. SCSU brings home another title in 1943, before taking off two seasons due to World War II. 1946 - George Lynch returns to coach for one season and leads SCSU to a 12-3 record and another NIC title. 1951 - Les Luymes is named head coach. He goes on to post a four-year record of 50-37. 1954 - Former SCSU star Ken Novak serves for one season as head coach. Novak scored 1,015 points during his career from 1947-51. A standout of in 1954-55 was Roger Westlund, who ended his career with 1,328 points. 1956 - Paul Meadows named head coach. He immediately turns SCSU into a NIC power. The Huskies win NIC titles in 1956, 1957 and 1958 under his leadership. SCSU was directed on the floor by Dave Westlund (Roger’s brother) and Vern Baggenstoss, who still owns all of SCSU’s rebounding records. In 1957, “Moose” Baggenstoss became the Huskies’ first AllAmerica selection. 1959 - Another great era of SCSU hoops opened as Marlow “Red” Severson was named head coach. In 11 seasons, Severson posted a 20766 record that included nine NIC titles. 1962 - SCSU wins its first-ever NAIA District 13 title. Goes on to defeat Alabama-Florence in first round of NAIA finals before losing to Western Illinois. 1964 - SCSU advanced to the NAIA finals once again. Izzy Schmeising establishes himself as one of SCSU’s best. A 1966 All-American, he still holds the SCSU record with 56 points against Michigan Tech in 1966. 1965 - Halenbeck Hall, the current home of the Huskies, is opened for play.

12

1968 - The pinnacle of Severson’s coaching career. SCSU posts 25-4 record, which includes another NIC title and a trip to the NAIA finals. Standouts Terry Porter, Mike Trewick and Tom Ditty help make it happen on the court. 1969 - Noel Olson named new head coach. Huskies go on to win NIC title in his first year of service in 1970. Olson remains as head coach until 1981 (155-162 record). 1974 - SCSU gains first bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Huskies defeat NDSU in first round of playoffs before suffering loses to Kentucky Wesleyan and North Dakota. 1976 - Olson guides SCSU to another NIC title with help from team stars Al Anderstrom and Bryan Rohs. Current SCSU coach Kevin Schlagel is also a member of that team. 1981 - Sam Skarich begins three season run as head coach. Olson steps down to concentrate on duties as athletic director. SCSU all-time scoring leader Dan Hagen ends career in 1980-81 with 2,136 points. 1982 - SCSU opens play in the North Central Conference. 1984 - Butch Raymond begins 13-year run as head coach. Raymond will go on to post a 231-142 record with the Huskies. 1986 - Behind the power of All-America selection Kevin Catron and All-NCC choice John Anderson, SCSU wins its first NCC title with a 26-4, 16-2 NCC record. SCSU also advances to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 1974. 1987 - Another NCC title for SCSU. Led by standout Reggie Perkins, SCSU also advances to NCAA quarterfinals before losing to Delta State 78-73 in overtime. 1988 - SCSU claims NCC triple crown with a 26-4, 15-3 record. 2008 - A Husky squad boasting only a pair of seniors and laden with first year and sophomores raced out of the gate to a 9-0 record and #8 national ranking. The nightly highlight was senior guard David Dreas whose ascent up the Husky scoring charts was the weekly headline. THE 2010 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON RUN TO THE NCAA DIVISION II FINAL FOUR - ELITE EIGHT

2010 NCAA Divsion II Elite Eight and Final Four Experience

ST. CLOUD STATE 92, MIDWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY 88 MAR. 24, 2010- Elite Eight: In the city where the game of basketball was born, St. Cloud State now stands alone in school history with a 92-88 win over Midwestern State University Wednesday afternoon in the Elite Eight round of the Division II tournament in the Mass Mutal Center in downtown Springfield, Mass. Behind one of the top performances in Elite Eight history from junior Taylor Witt (Morris), St. Cloud State advanced to the Huskies first Final Four game in school history.

St. Cloud State ended the Mustangs season at 31-3 while recording a school record 29th win of the season, as Witt scored 20 of the final 21 dramatic points to down Midwestern State. Witt went off for the fourth highest scoring total in an Elite Eight game with 43 points, including 38 in the second half. He also made a NCAA tournament record with 22 free throws made and 23 attempted. “I just started to feel it. I was trying to take it to the hoop and pull up to get to the free throw line. In a big game like this, it’s going to come down to free throws,” Witt said of his attack on the Mustang defense. Witt’s 43 points were the third highest in school history, after scoring just five points in nine minutes of play in the first half. “I think every kid’s dream is to play in March…deep into March. We definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it without the team,” Witt said.

St. Cloud State ended the half shooting 25 percent from the field, while the Crimson Hawks made 43.8 percent of their shots attempted. St. Cloud State then came out and battled in the second half to and sophomore Brett Putz (Forest City, Iowa) made a crucial lay-up off an offensive rebound to tie the game at 64-64. But IUP had an answer for every St. Cloud State basket down the stretch to put an end to the season.
