I can’t believe Christmas is upon us once again! I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but the minute the clocks go back I can’t help but switch to festive mode, adding gift ideas to Amazon for the kids, ordering my charity Christmas cards and – as embarrassed as I am to reveal – sitting up past midnight so I can secure the perfect online grocery shopping slot.

One such mum who appreciates the pressures of juggling Christmas with a career is our covergirl, Ferne McCann. We sat down with the TV star to find out how she finds the time to get set for the festivities, all the while working and looking after her daughter, Sunday. FERNE MCCANN’S DAUGHTER, Sunday, is literally the perfect baby. When the reality star arrives for our Christmas photo shoot with her one-year-old tot, I can’t help but feel apprehensive about the fact she’s not brought her mum or a relative along for support. As a mum of two I know how demanding young children can be, but within a couple of minutes Ferne’s got things sorted, producing a bundle of toys for her little girl to play with while the hairdresser and make-up artist get to work.

Sunday coos with delight at her favourite cuddly rabbit, Bun Bun, and doesn’t even make a peep when she’s changed in to an assortment of adorable outfits for our festive shots.

Sunday, or ‘Munch’ as she’s affectionately known, is clearly used to the attention, having been in the spotlight ever since she was born due to her mum’s life in the public eye. First making an appearance on reality show, The Only

How was Christmas different before you became a mum?

‘Quite often Billie [Faiers] and Greg [Shepherd] would host a Christmas party, so I’d get dressed up and go to that. I’d also go out on Christmas Eve. I still did that last year, but it was a much more relaxed affair. I went to my local pub with Dani [Armstrong] and some other friends, but it was for a lunchtime drink. I think I’ll do that again this year with Sunday, and then go home for the afternoon to relax.’

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

‘My mum always bakes biscuits in the shape of horseshoes, and we make Parma ham and anchovy palmiers. Christmas growing up was so exciting – I used to wake in the middle of the night wondering if Father Christmas had been.

We’d always get a sack of presents at the foot of the bed for us to open first thing, as well as a stocking downstairs. The presents under the tree then got put in to piles, ready to be opened after we’d got dressed and had our breakfast.’

Let’s talk about shopping for presents. Are you organised when it comes to gifts?

‘Definitely. I don’t like shopping in general but I love buying Christmas gifts. I walk around Harrods pretending I’m in a film like Serendipity or Sex and the City! It’s very “New York” in Harrods and everyone’s there getting their Christmas shopping. I’m actually going to the Harrods Christmas Grotto this year, so Sunday can meet Father Christmas for the first time.’

What are you buying everyone this year?

‘I try not to go mad but I always end up spending too much – I don’t know when to stop!

If I’ve bought one person a Jo Malone candle I’ll buy everyone a Jo Malone candle. I love Christmas so much and it’s the perfect time to say thank you to those you love.’

What about Sunday?

‘She’s really into books and always wants me to read to her, so I’m getting her a book shelf or storage to keep them in. She’s so lucky already – so many people contact me and want to send her things, plus she’s just got lots of gifts for her birthday. If anything, she needs to give some of her toys away to less fortunate children, which we really need to sort out soon.’

Is there anything you want for yourself?

‘I always ask for the same thing – eye make-up remover! My mum gets it for me every time she’s at the airport – it’s the Estée Lauder Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. I also like Tom Ford’s Eye Defining Pen, and I love pyjamas from places like Marks & Spencer or Victoria’s Secret.’

Are you the girl that’s crying in to a glass of wine on Christmas Eve having left your wrapping to the very last minute?

‘If I’m in a shop and they offer a gift wrapping service I always get it done. I try to wrap as I buy, but I’ll still end up wrapping a few presents on Christmas morning! This year, I want all my paper to match my tree, which is decorated with white, silver and glass baubles. But I’m not sure glass accessories are going to work anymore – I’ll have to Sunday-proof my tree!’

Moving on to Christmas food… what are your favourite things to eat and drink?

‘I’m all about the food. My mum makes the most amazing stuffing balls, and we always have smoked salmon blinis with caviar. I also love turkey dripping on toast! I don’t tend to eat much bread normally, but at Christmas I sit there devouring it on white bread! It reminds me of my grandparents, which is what Christmas is all about – reliving all those family traditions and memories that you can then pass on to the next generation.’

What about Boxing Day? ‘This year I’m so excited as I’ll be packing to go away! Sunday and I are off with my friend Carl to spend New Year in Dubai. Loads of my other friends will be out there as well, so on Boxing Day I’ll just chill, play with Sunday and get organised for our break. Normally, I feel a bit sad once Christmas is over, as there’s often that lull when no one really does anything in the run-up to New Year. I’m excited we’re making the most of our time off this year though and spending it somewhere hot.’

What do you do on a typical Christmas Day? ‘It totally depends whose house we are at.

We’ll always make sure we go for a long walk after lunch, either to Weald Country Park to see the deer, or Thorndon, which is right near me and absolutely gorgeous. We all love a bit of Christmas TV, too. It used to be all about Downton Abbey – I’m gutted it’s not on anymore.

Now we tend to sit down and watch the EastEnders special instead.’

You teamed up with ex-TOWIE star, Dani, in the quest to stay fit, and even have your own website, fernutrition.com. Does that mean you watch what you eat on Christmas Day? ‘No – I indulge 100%! Having said that, I do still have Herbalife every single day. For me, it’s as essential as waking up and taking a shower. I want to make sure I’ve supplied my body with the best nutrition, so I’ll even have a shake on Christmas morning to start the day.’ celebritysecrets.com

You’re also releasing your new fitness DVD, Fit As Ferne, next month. Did you follow the exercises before Billie’s hen do this year?

‘I’m always stricter if I’ve got a holiday coming up. For me it’s not just about diet – you have to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and exercise is a big part of that. I always work out at least twice a week, which is great for me both physically and mentally.’

How are things between you and Sam now?

‘When we were on the hen do, we all uploaded the same photo on Instagram of me, Sam and Billie together – and that picture speaks for itself. People are still desperate to know if there’s any animosity between us… and the answer is there isn’t! We’re really good.’

So will you be having your own Christmas party and inviting any of the old TOWIE gang?

‘I love a get together, so I’ll definitely be doing some sort of Christmas drinks and nibbles. I see Gemma and Arg all the time – Arg even sang at Sunday’s first birthday party – and I’m close to Dani and Jess [Wright]. I see Tommy Mallet and Mike Hassini down the gym, and I love Georgia [Kousoulou] – she’s a great girl.’

Is there anything you miss about the show?

‘Hanging out with my friends while going on amazing trips. I’ve nothing but fantastic memories from my time on TOWIE, but I’d never go back, not even for a cameo. There’s no reason for me to return – it would be really odd if I just popped in for one episode!’

How’s the filming going for your new series of Ferne McCann: First Time Mum? ‘It’s always weird at first, but you soon get used to the TV crew following you around. I love filming because I’m a very open person, and perhaps that’s why people relate to the series so much. I also like the fact that the show’s coming from a single parent’s perspective, which isn’t easy at times. You’ve got to pull yourself together and get on with it, and I think it’s important there’s someone in the public eye showcasing that.’

You mentioned in the last series that breastfeeding Sunday has ruined your boobs.

Is surgery on the cards in the future?

‘It’s definitely something that plays on my mind.

I would love to have a boob job, but on the other hand I’d hate to get them done! I do want better boobs than I have now, but I don’t want anything that doesn’t look natural. Without a bra on they just look so empty! I can’t complain though. They’ve nourished Sunday and have very much served their purpose.’

Are you also happy with your new nose?

‘I had a really subtle nose job, as I wanted to still look like ‘me’ in the mirror. I actually feel like this was the nose I was always meant to have, and almost forget I’ve had it done! Growing up with a big nose wasn’t great – boys would call me “goose”, which gave me a complex and made me feel insecure.’

Over 2.1 million fans follow your life on Instagram. How are you going to address the impact social media can have on people with Sunday when she’s older?

‘I just want Sunday to be truly comfortable in her own skin. Women are a formidable and powerful sex, and I’m going to ensure she’s independent and confident. Of course I’ll always think she’s perfect, but if she ever feels insecure I want her to know it’s what’s on the inside that matters – and that she’ll always be beautiful to me.’

Sunday has just turned one – how did you end up celebrating her first birthday earlier this month?

‘She had a big party at the Orsett Hall Hotel in Essex. I hired soft play and a children’s entertainer, and Arg also sang for us. We had lots of nice food and drinks and all my friends and family were there. It was such a lovely day, and Sunday was in her element.’

What would you say is the best thing about having a daughter?

‘I’m so glad I’ve had a girl, as I feel that a mother and daughter bond is so special. I’m so close with my own mum and can’t wait to enjoy that with Sunday as she grows up. I couldn’t have had Sunday at a better time – and I wouldn’t have done anything differently. She’s a blessing and I’m so lucky to have her.’ celebritysecrets.com

Having a daughter has obviously made you super career-driven.

How’s your Poundland beauty range going?

‘I’ve got my new collection launching early next year. Since becoming a mum I’ve noticed that all the little bits and bobs that you have to buy for your child really mount up, so I love the fact I’ve put my name to products that can help people out there look good on a budget. When you have a child your priority is them, so my range means women still get to wear the lashes and smell and look good for less.’

What about your Souki Belair fashion collection?

‘It’s full of wearable pieces and silky satins – clothes that are nice to wear on either a hot date or a night out with the girls. It’s a brand I’ve got with my sister and my good friend and stylist, Ellis. We’re looking to do a project with kids’ clothes, and I’ve also launched my children’s furniture range, Sunday Miles, which is a collection of personalised toy boxes.’

Have any of your celebrity friends worn Souki Belair?

‘Billie has worn a few pieces, as has Dani and Vicky [Pattison]. I love Vicky – when she came to see me recently she spent the whole morning with Sunday making her laugh.’

Will you be going to her wedding solo or with a plus one?

‘I haven’t thought about it! For the first time in my life I’m not looking for someone. When I was younger I wanted someone to flirt with, but now I love being on my own. It would have to take someone incredibly special to turn my head, as right now I’m only focusing on Sunday.’

What are your plans for 2019?

‘This year has been uplifting and busy, so I’m hoping for more of the same. I’m also looking to move house and grow my businesses.’

And what have you learned from 2018?

‘To trust myself – I’ve had to grow up a lot after the hurdles I’ve faced. When you make a decision stick with it. ‘I’m trying, but I don’t have a clue what to get anyone! I have to be organised as panto starts on the 15th of December, which doesn’t give me a lot of time to get things sorted. Plus it’s my son Corey’s birthday on the 16th of December, so I’ve a lot of organising to do.’

Who are you playing in panto this year?

‘I’m Alice in Dick Whittington at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. It’s a great show for the family and has lots of fun special effects.

I love performing, but it means I only get Christmas Day off with my kids. Luckily they both love spending time in the theatre and watching the show.’

Will someone else do the cooking for you this year?

‘My fiancé Sam and I are spending Christmas with my in-laws, Sam’s sister and her family. The last few years I’ve been with my parents. I’m more than happy to do the cooking, but this year I’m having a break and will sit back and relax!’

‘Sam and I have decided to donate money to charity instead of giving each other gifts. We’re getting both the kids a new bike, because they love cycling and have outgrown their old ones.’

Christmas means it’s panto season.

Who are you playing this year?

‘I’m Aladdin at Worthing Theatre. I’m really looking forward to it, even though it’s a hard job. Starring in panto is a right laugh – the kids love it, plus you’ve got jokes in there for the adults. It’s like a Steps show, where fans forget all their troubles and just escape in the music.

Panto’s the same – just have some fun and walk out with a smile on your face.’

How does it affect your Christmas?

‘We have three performances on Christmas Eve, I get Christmas Day off and then the show starts up again on Boxing Day. I’m spending Christmas Day with my wife, her dad and brother, but I’ll head back to Worthing later that night to prepare for the next day.’

Do you have to buy gifts and get yourself sorted earlier because of starring in panto?

‘Definitely. I’m not much of a last minute shopper, so I have to get organised. When it comes to presents, my wife and I normally give each other a list of what we’d like. It’s a really nice and hassle-free way of doing it, as we don’t get everything from the list so there’s still that element of surprise.’

So what gifts are going to be under the tree this Christmas morning?

‘This is going to sound bad, but because I’m running out of time my wife has bought a few presents for me to give her! She’s brilliant – she knows how busy I am so she’s helping me out. I’ll buy her some other gifts, and we always get bits for Luna, our French bulldog.’

What about gifts for yourself?

‘I never need anything, which probably makes me annoying to buy for. I’ll never forget the excitement of getting a bike from my dad when I was little – that was the best present ever! ‘I adore Christmas pudding and brandy sauce,’ she says. ‘I was so upset when I found out that I could no longer eat these things.’

With her daughter and mum suffering from the same condition, Stacey invented a recipe so they could all still indulge at Christmas.

ALTERNATIVE INGREDIENTS A traditional Christmas pudding contains butter, eggs and icing sugar – all of which are off limits for Stacey.

So, she has replaced them with medjool dates, coconut oil and coconut sugar, which keeps the pudding moist. ‘I’ve worked so hard to make sure it tastes the same as the real thing – and it really does,’ she says. CS

Spice up your Christmas

Rajah Rack of Lamb with Masala Mash Prep time: 15 mins Cooking time: 30 mins Serves 5

Lamb Rack

• 5 three bone lamb racks, French trimmed • 2-3 rosemary sprigs (optional garnish) • 10 asparagus sticks, blanched and lightly sautéed (optional) • Small pot of gravy

Marinade

• 2 small green finger chillies, made into a paste • 5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 tbsp ginger paste • 1 tbsp garlic paste • 2 tbsp white vinegar • 2 tsp dried fenugreek leaves (crushed) • 1 tsp tomato puree • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp coarse black pepper • 1 tsp coriander seeds • ½ tsp Rajah chilli powder • ½ tsp Rajah garam masala • ½ tsp Rajah garlic and coriander seasoning • ½ tsp Rajah lamb seasoning

For the masala mash

4/5 large potatoes 45g garlic butter 1 tsp Rajah cumin powder ¼ tsp black pepper ½ tsp Rajah chilli powder ½ tsp Rajah garam masala ¾ tsp salt 150g cheddar cheese, grated 30ml double cream 20ml milk

Method Lamb

1. Pre-heat the oven to 190°C. 2. Mix the marinade ingredients and blend into a smooth paste.

3. Coat the lamb racks in the marinade and leave in the refrigerator to marinate for 1 hour minimum (preferably overnight).

4. Moderately heat a large frying pan and brown each of the racks for 1-2 minutes.

Then turn and brown the other side for 1-2 minutes. Finally brown the other ends briefly so that all exposed meat is seared.

5. Put the racks in a large roasting tin, standing them in pairs with their bones interlinked. celebritysecrets.com

6. Roast for 10 minutes for very pink meat, 14 minutes for medium and 18 minutes for well done.

7. Transfer the lamb to a warmed plate, cover loosely with foil and allow to rest for about 5 minutes before carving. Carve into cutlets depending on your preference.

8. Serve on a bed of masala mash with gravy, asparagus and a sprig of rosemary garnish.

Masala mash

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. 2. Boil a pot of salted water, add potatoes and cook until tender but still firm. This should take you about 15-20 minutes.

3. Leave the potatoes to cool for 25/30 minutes, or cool quickly using cold water.

4.

4 Once cool, peel the skin from the potatoes.

5. Mash the potatoes whilst they are still a little warm inside for a fluffier texture.

6. Add the garlic butter, cumin powder, black pepper, red chilli, garam masala, salt, half the cheese, double cream and milk and mix well with a potato masher.

7. Place in a baking dish, sprinkle with the remaining cheese and oven cook for about 15-20 minutes until the cheese has turned golden brown.

8. Serve with the lamb racks and enjoy!

The TV star has also appeared on Blue Peter, The One Show and The Martin Lewis Money Show, after starting out as a much-loved children’s presenter on CBBC. ‘I hate waste, so we never buy too much food, but to be on the safe side, I make space in our freezer by using up anything by mid-December. We also love jazzing up Christmas leftovers – think cheesy Brussels sprouts, spicy turkey enchiladas or pancakes with leftover Christmas pudding.

The Celebrity Big Brother winner, who won the hearts of the nation after CBB housemate Roxanne Pallet’s shocking allegations, is happy in both his personal and professional life. Loved-up with TV star Lucy Mecklenburgh, he’s also embarking on his latest panto role as Captain Hook in Peter Pan. With only the 25th December off, does this mean Christmas is cancelled in the Thomas household? We FaceTimed the star to find out…

Christmas is only a little over a month away. Are you frantically buying gifts like the rest of us?

‘I’m leaving it to Lucy to sort – but she doesn’t know that yet! I’ll be away working in panto soon, plus I’m not very good with picking presents anyway. The gifts I buy will all be snapped up online, and I’ll even get them gift-wrapped as it’s easier when you’re pressed for time.’

How does playing in panto over December impact your Christmas?

‘You don’t get that festive build-up, as you only get Christmas Day off. I’m staying in a flat near the theatre while I’m performing, so I’ll get a tree and make it as Christmassy as possible. Starring in panto means you have to sacrifice being away from family and friends, but if I decorate where I’m staying it will feel much more festive.’

Tell us a bit about your panto role…

‘I’m playing Captain Hook in Peter Pan at the Beck Theatre. I played the same character last year, so being asked to return means I must have done a decent enough job! I love the film Hook with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman and I want to emulate the character Dustin played.’

I’m getting Lucy yet - she’s so relaxed with presents!’

Where are you spending Christmas Day? ‘I’ll be with my family, Lucy and my daughter, Scarlett. We’re going out for dinner, so there’s no stress with cooking and cleaning. After we’ll have drinks at my brother’s, but I have to be sensible as I’ve got to travel back for the Boxing Ryan and Scarlett Day panto decorating the Christmas tree performances.’ celebritysecrets.com

How do you split time with Scarlett at Christmas with your ex, Tina O’Brien?

‘Scarlett spends half the day with me, and half with Tina. She loves it as it’s like two Christmases for her. It’s a bit different now though, as she doesn’t believe in Father Christmas anymore.’

She must be growing up so fast…

‘I was sad when she stopped believing. We’ve stopped putting out a mince pie and carrots for Santa and his reindeer, but Scarlett still does it with Tina, as she has a little brother.’

Do you have any family Christmas traditions?

‘Scarlett and I decorate the tree together and have Christmas dinner wherever I’m staying. We also like watching lots of Christmas films.’

What do you want for Christmas?

‘I’m a dad, so I get socks and pants! I don’t need anything – I’m happy just being with my family.’

What about presents for Scarlett and Lucy?

‘Scarlett’s in to slime, so I’ll get her a slime-making kit. She also loves music, so I’ll buy her a gift card for songs for her phone. I don’t know about Lucy yet – she’s so relaxed when it comes to presents!’

Finally, will you be making any New Year resolutions for 2019?

‘Yes, but I don’t stick to them! I might do dry January, but I’ve never quite managed it. I’m also going to stop looking at my phone as much.
