‘Long gone are the days of me and my husband partying all night! Our youngest daughter, Penelope, goes to bed at half five as she’s only just turned two, and Belle goes up at seven.

They did stay up a little bit later, but we were all tucked up in bed by midnight in the end!’

And how was your time off over Christmas?

‘It was a real family affair.

We had Christmas Day at ours, then went to visit my parents on Boxing Day. It was all about chilling out with family, which to me is what the festivities are all about.’

What’s your take on New Year’s resolutions?

‘I really don’t believe in putting all your emphasis on a certain time of year. If you want to change something you should instead implement it at the time of realisation. It’s also all too easy to wait until January and binge in the lead-up to the first of the month.’

Will you be using your Confidence: The Journal again this year?

‘Journaling is so important to me, as it encourages you to reflect daily, weekly and monthly, rather than just at the beginning and the end of the year. I like to use mine every day, for the good and the bad. It helps me ensure accountability; to realise what I want from life – and what I’m actually getting.’

How can readers eat well and stay healthy without spending a fortune this January?

‘Going to the gym and a healthy diet can be expensive, so prep to keep costs down. Make your own meals rather than relying on convenience, and batch cook to save time and money. With exercise, look at your lifestyle.

Chuck some gym clothes on and chase your kids around the park – or team up with a friend and go jogging together.’

What do you do to stay healthy?

‘If I have the time I go to the gym, but if I haven’t got childcare I do a YouTube workout in the lounge.

I like to run, but it’s challenging when you’re blind in one eye. I am also unable to sweat. I can’t regulate my body temperature and it’s very hard to cool down.’

Does Belle realise you look a little different to other mums out there?

‘Belle’s never actually said those words to me, but she does know that I got burnt when I was younger and understands

all about health and safety around the house. It’s not a big ongoing conversation, because kids are so accepting.

To her I’m just “Mummy”.’

You’ve written a number of selfhelp books about building up your confidence and self-esteem.

How’s your own mental health these days?

‘I make sure I see my therapist once a week to off-load and problem solve, and like everyone I of course have my good and my bad days. If I’m ever having a wobbly moment I like to acknowledge it and then check in with someone. I now look at my mental health in exactly the same way as I do my physical well-being. If you want to stay healthy you have to get out there and exercise – and I believe it’s very much the same when it comes to your brain.’

We live in an Instagramobsessed world. What do you say to anyone who doubts their self-worth and compares themselves to others?

‘You need to understand how Instagram works, looking at all the filters, apps and editing. If you’re feeling low about yourself, try and use apps that check your screen time, too.

It’s OK to look at social media, but a good balance is so important for your health.’

What do you think of Instagram’s attempts to exert more control over the images that are being uploaded?

‘I understand the thought process behind it, but because it’s a system doing it, it’s not really bespoke and is more of a “blanket” effect at the moment.

I do believe some action is better than nothing at all, though.’

The government is considering imposing a mandatory code of conduct on companies like Instagram and Facebook, while the NSPCC thinks they should also be more responsible. What do you think should be done?

‘We’ve got to address online bullying and stop it in its tracks.

It’s scary the world our children are growing up in. Things aren’t getting written on the toilet walls anymore – they’re getting posted on social media and in your DMs. It just can’t continue like it is.’

So how are you going to guide your girls in a world that’s obsessed by beauty?

‘It’s all about educating them.

I want them to grow up believing that they don’t have to rely on anyone else. I want them to be confident and not afraid of letting go and making mistakes. I just want to let them live their lives – and not try to control the outcome so much.’

Interview Laura Forsyth I’M PREPARING TO RUN THE LONDON MARATHON! ‘I’m busy training for my biggest fitness challenge, running over 26 miles in April for Leicester Hospitals Charity. That’s why I’m determined to lose weight, especially now the festivities are out of the way. At the start I weighed 12st 8lb, and I’d love to get to 11 stone – or lower!’

IN THE PAST I’VE STRUGGLED WITH MY WEIGHT ‘Being on the road always meant it was hard for me to eat as well as I’d like. I want an excuse to shop for smaller clothes, so I’m going to the gym a minimum of three times a week. I’m starting the New Year feeling healthy, unlike previous years after all those Christmas dinners!’

Charlie, you’re in great shape!

Have you always been body confident?

‘Not at all. The truth is body confidence is just a by-product of general confidence. For me being fit, healthy and strong helps in all areas of my life. I look at things that I feel need improving or will help my life – and work on that.’

How else do you stay fit?

‘I love running. Music is a huge thing in my life and nothing beats whacking some music on, getting a good jog pace going and getting some fresh air.

Hiking is also something I want to do more of. I’ve hiked in northern Spain and Wales and really enjoyed it – and the legs loved it, too.’

What do you do to keep fit?

‘I exercise most days for up to an hour. After I had shoulder surgery I had to lay off the weights for six months. That meant doing more body weight circuits and exercises to keep my heart rate up, burning calories while keeping my waistline in check.’

Do you watch what you eat?

‘I keep my calories quite low. I eat plenty of veg, avoid lots of meat and swerve saturated fat wherever possible. I’m a sucker for pizza or chunky chips with lots of ketchup at the weekends, though. I also love sugar! In my fridge you’ll find Greek yoghurt, berries, veggies, eggs – and chocolatecovered marshmallows! You’ve got to have some treats!’

You trained Gemma Collins on her TV show. Why do you get on so well?

‘I know how to handle her. We have a genuine friendship and are always honest with each other. I keep her in check, too!

She’s also a big help with my fitness business, as she has a great third eye.’

I exercise most days for up to an hour

What do you think about Gemma and Arg as a couple?

‘I’m a great believer in love, and if people are meant to be together they’ll end up with each other. Only time will tell.’

Did being on TV again make you miss your time on TOWIE? ‘My life has gone in a totally different direction. Reality TV is a great opportunity but it’s not long-term in my opinion.’

KEEPING IN SHAPE’S HARD ‘I eat a vegetarian diet and try to snack on healthy foods. I also go to bootcamp whenever I can, but I prioritise my family over an exercise class. I’m comfortable in my body and yes, it’s important to stay fit for health reasons, but I’m content enough to enjoy my life.’

THE TRAINING FOR DANCING ON ICE IS IMMENSE ‘I’m actually pretty fit right now as our schedule for the show is pretty intense. The hours are long, but it’s also so much fun – and my trainer is amazing. It’s important to prepare properly, as I’m learning a new sport which requires great skill and talent.

EXERCISE ISN’T JUST ABOUT HITTING THE GYM ‘Because work’s so busy I struggle to find time to go to the gym as much as I’d like. Instead I make sure I take my dogs on daily walks and do a few sit-ups now and then to keep my stomach nice and toned. I also try to take the stairs whenever I can, as opposed to using a lift or the escalator. It’s amazing how many extra steps you get in just by doing that!’

MAKE-UP CAN LIFT YOUR MOOD ‘When I was studying for my degree I wore make-up to go to the library, as it lifted my mood and set me up for the day.

Girls these days wear make-up younger than I did, but I think this is all down to celebs and make-up artists posting techniques and advice on social media.’

I LOVE TO MEDITATE TO SWITCH OFF ‘Meditation music always works to distract me from over-thinking and relaxes me so much.

A bath and massage are also key when it comes to my self-care.

I work hard and like to reward myself, so those are definitely my go-to rituals.’

I personally wouldn’t revisit the clothes we wore in our 2003 track, No Good Advice, but you have to remember that was 17 years ago! The look was definitely reminiscent of that moment in time, plus it’s good to experiment and be brave sometimes!’

What are your favourite looks for the winter months?

‘It’s definitely a roll neck jumper with an oversized blazer and jeans, or a mini skirt to dress it up a little more. Having said that this look might not necessarily work for everyone. The most important piece of fashion advice I’ve ever been given is to always dress for your shape, and never just follow the trends.’

S ‘We were on a boat making crab soufflés, but cooking in the middle of the Irish sea – while on a charcoal oven – meant they ended up looking more like crab poo!’

D ‘I remember working on a recipe for duck dumplings, where we wanted them to take on an orange flavour. Something weird happened between the orange juice and the dumplings, and they were so hard we ended up playing ping pong with them! That recipe didn’t make it in the book!’

In the past I’ve created a vision board, putting up pictures of what I’d like to achieve.
