When Shannon Ferrington our Employee of the Month for September started at Hurley 24 years ago, she accepted the position over other opportunities she had because she liked the idea of working so close to home. Now, working as a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room, she is fully committed to her multifaceted and demanding role that sees her circulating in the OR rooms during cases, doing everything from checking patients in, to preparing the necessary equipment and running for anything doctors might need during surgery. Shannon finds the work every bit as rewarding as it is challenging, and said “there’s nowhere else I want to be.”

Shannon’s other favorite part of her work here is the opportunity to make personal connections with patients. As an LDR nurse, she felt fortunate to be able to be there to help patients at their most vulnerable and that “it’s the coolest thing I’ve ever done at Hurley. It’s hard to top that.”

In her current position, she said “it’s so rewarding to be the one to hold a patient's hand before life altering surgeries or diagnoses. It can be really hard, but I can’t imagine any other job being more rewarding.”

She is a strong patient advocate who is also versatile and efficient. Shannon is consistently proactive to ensure the best possible experience for both the patients and the surgeons, all while maintaining a positive, caring attitude.

Teaching is another area that Shannon excels in, and she is one of Surgery's ‘go to’ preceptors for new nurses within the department. Problem solving is one of her stengths that benefits all within our department, and she is a frequent resource for other staff to rely on. Shannon consistently seeks out new experiences and is one of the first to volunteer to learn new surgical procedures.”

On Thursday, October 7, the annual Pink Night Palooza event was held virtually and broadcasted live by Mid-Michigan NOW for the first time in its 13 year history, raising a total of $20,000! Proceeds from this event go to Hurley’s Breast Cancer Patient Navigation Program and Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute to help support local patients going through the financially draining, life-disrupting process of cancer. Funds were generated from an online Silent Auction, Bra-Artistry Fashion Show and monetary donations.

solutions for uterine fibroids

Hurley hosted a Hurley Healthy Living Series “Solutions for Uterine Fibroids and Pelvic Health” virtual event on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Kacy Houle, Physical Therapist, Omari Young, MD, OB/GYN and Ambreen Sattar, MD, Interventional Radiologist were the presenters.

P E LV I C H E A LT H - N E W M I N I M A L LY I N VA S I V E S O L U T I O N S Once traditional surgery was the only effective treatment solution for many women’s painful or debilitating pelvic health issues like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts, but today, interventional radiologists (IR) at Hurley can treat such conditions using minimally-invasive techniques that are less painful and require a shorter recovery time than traditional surgery.

One such condition that can be treated by IR is pelvic congestion syndrome. Pelvic congestion syndrome is caused by enlarged ovarian veins. Women who have given birth more than once are at risk, as are women who have other family members who have it. The main symptom to be aware of is pelvic pain that lasts for at least six months, and that often starts during or after pregnancy, usually presents on the left side, and worsens toward the end of the day. Guided by x-rays, the IR can relieve the pressure and pain that is caused by the enlarged ovarian vein by directing an embolic agent to the enlarged pelvic veins causing the congestion. The embolic agents then act to relieve the pressure causing the pain by blocking the blood flow through the affected area. This minimally invasive procedure only requires only a small incision through the patient’s groin or wrist. The whole procedure happens while sedated in an interventional radiology suite over about 30 minutes to an hour. Women are sent home the day of the procedure and afterwards, are able to immediately resume normal activities.

UTERINE FIBROIDS Another condition that can be relieved is uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are a type of tumor that occur in the muscle cells of the uterus. While not typically dangerous, the symptoms are often difficult to live with and can impact quality of life. Information on risk factors for uterine fibroids is limited, but there are known increased risk factors: •

Patients that are African American.

•

Patients over the age of 40.

•

Patients with high blood pressure.

•

Patients that are overweight.

•

Patients who have had no children.

•

Patients who have immediate family members with uterine fibroids.

Symptoms of uterine fibroids include pelvic pressure or pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, pain during intercourse, abdominal enlargement, constipation, and bloating. These symptoms are not only a source of discomfort, but many women delay diagnosis or treatment out of embarrassment or a lack of knowledge concerning available treatments.

Some complications from fibroids can include iron deficiency anemia, diminished sex life, repeated miscarriage, and premature labor. While most women don’t exhibit every symptom, many women with uterine fibroids experience one or more of these symptoms. Fibroid diagnosis can be confirmed by non-invasive imaging, such as an MRI or ultrasound.

While there are some medications that can help relieve some of the symptoms, there are currently no medications that eliminate the fibroids themselves.

In the United States, 20% of women believe that a hysterectomy (the complete removal of the uterus) is the only treatment for uterine fibroids. That is no longer the case. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive treatment option led by an IR that can relieve symptoms and allow women to keep their uterus. UFE is less painful and has a shorter recovery time than surgical treatments.

Similar to ovarian vein embolization, with UFE an IR uses imaging to guide a catheter through a small incision to the vessels that lead to the fibroids. Then, the IR injects small particles through the catheter to block blood flow to the fibroid. Without blood flow, the fibroids shrink and disappear, taking the symptoms with them.

If needed, a myomectomy can also be done. This is a minimally invasive surgical treatment option done often by an OB/GYN that preserves the uterus by removing the fibroid with a surgical method, such as laparoscopy. For large fibroids, UFE and a myomectomy can be used in conjunction to avoid a hysterectomy.

Tarnesa Martin, RN, BSN, Hurley’s Patient Resource & Community Advocate, also known as “Nurse T” serves as a community liaison for identified health concerns, focusing on community education and resources in an effort to reduce health disparities and improve access to care. Tarnesa participates in community outreach and educational events establishing relationships with community groups, minority-owned businesses, faith-based organizations and other trusted channels that serve minority populations.

Tarnesa believes in engaging those who need care and their families as partners in their own healthcare. She reinforces this through her messaging as she works to educate the community on health issues and the resources available through Hurley. She attends many events where she not only finds herself in the role of community advocate and educator but also lending a hand as a first-aid provider. Tarnesa continues to represent Hurley at many community events:

OCTOBER 16TH Clio Can Do Road Race Series

A nonprofit event aiming to help other women who are facing menopause. Nurse T focused on educating the group on menopause, while sharing information on Hurley’s Women's Services.

A 3.1 mile run/walk course supporting the Clio Cross Country Team, the Youth Sports Complex, the Compassionate Life Foundation, and the Freedom 4 Veterans project. Nurse T hosted a Hurley table and shared the resources available through Hurley

SEPTEMBER 25TH NAMI 4th Annual Illuminate Community Event at Mott College An event focused on reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. Nurse T shared information about the resources available through Hurley, as well as other community resources relating to mental health. She also participated in the Illumination Walk representing the celebration of life and the memories of individuals and family members affected by suicide.

SEPTEMBER 29TH Community Education Sessions UofM-Flint students and Nurse T shared the resources available through Hurley to local businesses on Center Road relating to the “Know before you go” campaign, whether to seek medical attention at the urgent care or the emergency room.

OCTOBER 2ND “Pop Up Shop Downtown” - Fundraiser to support Victims of Human Trafficking

OCTOBER 17TH “Bridging the Gap between Faith and Mental Health” An event on mental health held at the Bountiful Love Ministries. Nurse T shared the resources available through Hurley, as well as introduced the role of the Hurley Patient Resource & Community Advocate (PRCA).

OCTOBER 19TH Hasselbring Senior Center Community Event A senior center in Flint that provides programs, activities and services to promote health, safety and dignity, enabling seniors to remain independent in the community. Nurse T presented to over 400 attendees on women's health, breast cancer awareness, mental health, menopause and medical conditions that it could mimic, information on Human Trafficking, including the Hurley Trauma Recovery Center, as well as introduced the role of the Hurley Patient Resource & Community Advocate (PRCA).

Nurse T shared information on Human Trafficking, focusing on Hurley’s Trauma Recovery Center (TRC), a program that offers free, confidential help to individuals and their families who have been impacted by violence.

hurley's vascular access team R E C E I V E S B O A R D C E R T I F I C AT I O N Hurley is proud to recognize the members of the Vascular Access Team who received Cardiac Vascular Nursing Certification and are now credentialed as Cardiac Vascular Nurse – Board Certified (CV-BC™).

This certification requires that each individual has practiced the equivalent of 2 years full-time as a registered nurse, has a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in cardiac-vascular nursing within the last 3 years and has completed 30 hours of continuing education in cardiac-vascular nursing within the last 3 years. Upon completion of these requirements, all must sit for state exams to be board certified.

Hurley is proud to recognize the members of the Vascular Access Team. The team has devoted many hours in mastering the skills of vascular access nursing. This dedication to their craft has paid off by the team achieving their board-certifications and have earned the title of Vascular Access-Board Certified Nurses. The team includes the following RN’s: Patricia LaBrecque, Wendy Baldwin, Vicky Jobin, Marilyn Nelson, Elizabeth Werda, Jami Potestio, William Foster, Aaron Seppanen and Donald DuVan (House Director).

I N C E P T I O N O F T H E T E A M The current Vascular Access Team was launched in 2019 by Jill Welsh-Schrader, Nurse Manager and Bill Thompson, Nurse Educator. At that time the Vascular Access Team consisted of 4 members and now has grown to an 11 member team. There are still 3 of the original members of the Vascular Access team serving Hurley Medical Center and they include: Patricia LaBrecque, Vicky Jobin and Wendy Baldwin. These nurses were instrumental in the original development of the team and continue to be a valuable resource to all.

both midline and picc line insertion, but has also increased their knowledge on intravenous therapy allowing them to determine which IV access best meets the needs of the patient based on their treatment plan. On average, the team places 750 peripheral IVs per month, 30 picc lines and about 9 midlines. The Vascular Access Team also serves a dual role as the Rapid Response Team. In addition to their role of obtaining IV access, they support the medical-surgical areas when patients require a higher level of care. They hold the responsibility of responding to all Code Stroke’s, Mass Transfusion Protocols and assisting with Code Blue’s throughout Hurley.

FUTURE OF THE TEAM These conscientious nurses are already focusing on the next step in the evolution of the team by researching and bringing the latest technologies to Hurley. The team is currently utilizing the latest in ultrasound technology and are working with vendors on the most recent innovations in picc and midlines with the hopes of increasing dwell time and reducing related complications, while always focusing on patient safety and satisfaction.

TEAM INTERVENTIONS The Vascular Access Team is responsible for assisting in patient care throughout Hurley Medical Center by obtaining various types of vascular access, such as: peripheral IV’s, midlines and peripheral inserted central catheters. The Vascular Access Team has not only mastered the skills of 18 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER

Hurley now offers a Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) clinic to treat those who need help with opioid use disorder. Services are available to patients who are seen in Hurley’s ED who are seeking treatment for their opioid use disorder (OUD), self-identify as having a problem with OUD, withdrawing from opioids or with other complications of their disease or who may have experienced a nonfatal overdose.

The MOUD clinic provides telemedicine care and is led by Dr. Ryan J. Reece. Dr. Reece attended Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine and completed his residency at Michigan State University/ Sparrow Health System in emergency medicine. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and is working toward his certification in Addiction Medicine.

Why the Emergency Department?

The ED is often the primary source of medical care for individuals with OUD. ED visits offer an opportunity to access life-saving treatment. Identifying individuals with untreated OUD enables providers to motivate individuals to accept treatment, effectively treat opioid withdrawal symptoms, initiate evidence-based treatment, refer individuals to ongoing care and to reduce harm by offering overdose education and dispensing naloxone kits.

Is Addiction a Medical Disease?

Instead of understanding addiction as only a moral or spiritual failing, many medical professionals have begun to view opioid use disorder as a medical disease. The disease of addiction can be caused by repeated exposure to a drug, coupled with genetic or environmental risk factors, leading to physical changes in the brain’s opioid receptors. In this view, addiction can be treated and managed with medication, much like other chronic medical conditions. Medication has been shown to provide an evidence-based, safe, controlled level of treatment to overcome the use of a problem opioid. Hurley’s program offers a safe, comfortable environment for patients who suffer from OUD.

“LET’S MAKE MIRACLES” RADIOTHON The second annual “Let’s Make Miracles” Radiothon benefitting Hurley’s CMNH program was held at Townsquare Media in Burton on September 16 and 17. The title sponsor for the event was Dort Financial Credit Union. Participating stations were: CARS 108, Club 93.7, Banana 101.5, 1470 WFNT and US 103.1.

A total of $66,775 was raised to help Hurley kids. During the Radiothon, listeners heard heartwarming, inspirational stories of doctors, nurses and Child Life Specialists who make miracles happen for families at Hurley Children’s Hospital. Proceeds fund valuable children’s services and programs.

MOLINACARES MIRACLE PICNIC The CMN team at the Hurley Foundation was thrilled to host the MolinaCares Miracle Picnic at Longway Planetarium on September 27. Our Hurley miracle families had a great time watching the custom video on the Planetarium Dome, enjoying yummy food trucks, participating in activities like face painting and balloon artistry and visiting special fairy tale characters.

They also got to spend some quality time with our certified Child Life Specialists who guided them through an activity with medical play dolls and an adorable fall craft! Proceeds from this event benefited the Sheppy Dog Child Life Endowment at Hurley Children's Hospital, which will help ensure our Child Life Specialists can care for patients and their families for years to come. We are grateful to our friends at MolinaCares Accord for their commitment to this event and to the pediatric patients and families treated at Hurley Children’s Hospital.

september of the month October’s Volunteer of the Month is Kathy Oleski. Since starting as a volunteer at Hurley, Kathy has spent time working in the lobby shop and a lot of the COVID vaccine clinics, though most of her time is spent with the Hurley Elder Life Program (HELP). When elderly patients are admitted to Hurley, the HELP Team interviews them to determine their level of independence at home, learn about their families and identify hobbies and interests. HELP Team volunteers like Kathy then spend time with those patients with the goal of helping them avoid delirium during their stay.

When Kathy first decided to volunteer, she says she “wanted to work in the NICU, holding babies, but now I wouldn’t give up my spot on the HELP Team.”

The HELP Team has access to a variety of games like cards and dominoes to play with patients to keep them engaged and happy, but Kathy says she inevitably ends up spending time with them because she enjoys listening to their stories and wisdom so much. “Something almost magical happens when you walk into a room and the

patient isn’t happy to be in the hospital and your only job is to make them feel better, help them feel important. I’m changed by the experience.

Every person has a story to tell, and it’s a privilege to be able to listen.”

After a successful career working as a CPA for 35 years, 21 of which was spent at an industrial heat treating company where she became CFO, the transition to volunteering was a natural one.

The company she helped build was guided by an underlying goal of enabling its owners to help others and that philosophy helped to form Kathy’s own. She ended up volunteering at Hurley Medical Center because of timing; it was at the beginning of COVID shutdowns, and not many hospitals were accepting volunteers. Though she drives almost an hour to get to Hurley, she’s thankful she gets to be a visitor for some of the patients who need them most when visitors are limited.

When asked why she would recommend volunteering at Hurley, she says “no matter what’s going on in your own life, your problems will feel smaller when you see what other people are dealing with.” Her nomination for Volunteer of the Month came as a surprise because she feels like she contributes such a small piece to the program here, but she says it was “validating to know I’m doing the right thing with my time.”

Kathy is a great example of dedication in volunteerism. She travels to us from Commerce Township to spend the day donating her time and talents to our community and organization. She starts her day volunteering in the Hospital Elder Life program, assisting our elderly patients in a series of interventions that prepare them to have successful hospital outcomes. She does a quick wardrobe change and moves down to the Lobby Shop to volunteer there in the afternoon. You might recognize her from her dedication to our Covid Vaccine Clinics in which she was a regular volunteer. Spending a full day of her time to our organization is such a valuable donation and it is very easy to be appreciative of her efforts. She is an absolute joy to have as a volunteer.

In October, we celebrate many observances, such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Emotional Wellness Month. It is good to recognize that everyone, at some point, will encounter stress. Stress is an emotional reaction to the worrisome events that happen in everyday life. Reactions from stress can include fear, worries, feeling on edge and sadness.

Our bodies are equipped to deal with minor stressors.

What happens when we have chronic stress? Or stress following a traumatic event, such as a health diagnosis?

People who are under chronic or extreme stress may experience weight gain or loss, dizziness, tiredness, headaches, mood changes, difficultly concentrating or disrupted sleep. Learning that you or a loved one has been recently diagnosed with a health issue can lead to an increase in stress. This stress may be a result of the fear of what may happen or the worry of how you will afford treatment and medical help. Every person may experience stress in a different way, but it can contribute to negative health outcomes if left unmanaged.

● Bamlanivimab (BAM), a neutralizing IgG1 monoclonal antibody (mAb), received emergency use authorization (EUA) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 infection in patients 12 years of age and older weighing at least 40 kg at high risk for progressive and severe disease on Nov 10, 2020. ● The purpose of this study is to describe our experience with this treatment modality.

Methods ● Hurley Medical Center (HMC), is a 443 bed public, non-profit, teaching medical center located in Flint, Michigan. ● HMC administered its first BAM infusion on Nov 19, 2020. ● Through April 30, 2021, 407 patients with confirmed SARS-CoV2 infection, received a mAb infusion. ● 62/407 patients received the combination mAb therapy of BAM + Etesevimab, as the EUA for BAM monotherapy was revoked on 04/16/21. ● We retrospectively collected basic demographic data and hospitalization to our facility within 14 days of receiving mAb therapy on these patients. ● Bivariate analysis, multivariate logistics and linear regression analysis were performed to examine the association between study explanatory variables (i.e., sex, age, comorbidities, etc.) and the study outcomes (i.e., mortality and hospitalization).
