Beth Ann Brophy 1961 - 2021 Beth was known as Team Hurley’s Event Coordinator for the Crim Festival of Races where she helped get Hurley’s participation down to a fine science. She will be remembered and greatly missed each year Hurley is able to participate in this event.

The 2021 HAP Crim Festival of Races was held on Saturday, August 28, and once again, Hurley was the exclusive medical provider. Thank you to Team Hurley for volunteering year after year for this event working to keep everyone safe and healthy on the bricks. Congratulations to all of the runners and walkers!

Veronica began her career at Hurley after completing her nursing degree at University of MichiganFlint. She initially worked on 9E for 3 years and then found herself in Supplemental Nursing. Along with her nursing duties, she is working toward obtaining her critical care certification. Veronica Garza, RN, is our August 2021 Daisy Award recipient and is every bit deserving of the recognition. As a Supplemental Nurse, Veronica can be assigned anywhere from 9E, 7E, 5E, 3C or even the critical decision unit, CDU. Veronica uses her heart-warming personality to lift a patient’s spirits while providing excellent patient care. Veronica was nominated by a patient who spoke highly of her, even going on to express her appreciation and noting that Veronica was the “sunshine” in her life. The patient’s nomination read:

neighbors. It can be difficult being in the hospital and showing a bit of kindness can really make a difference. It is awesome when you see the effect your kindness has on a patient’s attitude,” said Veronica.

Veronica is very family oriented.

She expressed that her family provides a strong support system and recognized her husband, Nathan, her mom, Arcilla, and her sister, Gahbee. She also noted that she appreciates the support provided by the staff here at Hurley.

Veronica was very appreciative of the nomination. She came in to work, exiting the elevator on 8 West to a lobby with a group waiting for her. She was totally caught off guard. The announcement was made, and she was so surprised. “It meant a lot to me that I helped a patient and she took the time to make a nomination,” said Veronica.

Veronica received a certificate encased in a portfolio, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture from Zimbabwe called “A Healer’s Touch.”

Veronica is an amazingly talented nurse and a good human being. She truly loves patient care and has a passion for the nursing profession. She wants each patient or family interaction to be a positive one leaving a smile on their face.

I N T R O D U C T I O N Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, for both men and women, resulting in more than 150,000 deaths each year in the United States. In fact, lung cancer kills more people than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Like any cancer, early detection is key and allows for better outcomes. On August 19th, 2021, Hurley hosted a Live Virtual Lung Health Workshop to help the community learn how to defend against this deadly disease. Lung Health Navigator, Kevin Reynolds, explained how he can help make the screening process easier for patients, including information about insurance. Dr. Niraj Parikh, a Hurley Pulmonologist, covered screenings and early detections. Finally, Community Wellness Manager and Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Danielle Campbell, went over the best ways to quit smoking.

H U R L E Y L U N G C E N T E R The Hurley Lung Center consists of a team of board certified specialists: radiologists, pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons and pathologists and uses state-of-the-art technology, allowing better diagnosis and treatment of lung disease.

L U N G H E A L T H N A V I G A T O R Hurley’s Lung Health Navigator, Kevin Reynolds, coordinates Hurley’s Lung Screening Program. This includes reviewing daily radiology reports and notifying the patient’s providers of irregular findings.

Kevin also tracks incidental lung nodules on all X-rays and CT scans performed at Hurley. Kevin works closely with Hurley’s team of physicians to streamline the process of early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer, working to achieve better patient outcomes.

Kevin works with patients offering them education and resources on how and where to follow up with Hurley’s specialists. He works with patients diagnosed with COPD assisting in educating them on their disease. He continues to work with them even after discharge in an effort to assist them in navigating life with a chronic condition. “My goal is to equip our patients with knowledge, the tools and, most importantly, hope that allows them to live a quality life with a chronic condition,” Kevin notes.

L U N G S C R E E N I N G Computerized tomography (CT) screening uses special X-Ray technology to obtain image data from different angles around the body and then uses computer processing for the information to show a cross section of body tissues and organs. LDCT is quick and easy and results in a minimal amount of radiation exposure. The exam takes about 60 seconds.

LUNG SCREENING CRITERIA ( B A S E D O N I N S U R A N C E ) • Between the ages of 50 – 80 years old • Current smoker or one who has quit smoking within the last 15 years • Have smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day for the past 20 years or equivalent • Asymptomatic (no signs or symptoms of lung cancer)

workshop LDCT LUNG SCREENING The goal of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung screening is to save lives. Without LDCT lung screening, lung cancer is usually not found until a person develops symptoms, which may cause the cancer to be more difficult to treat. Lung screening has quickly become a success in early detection of lung cancer and LDCT has vastly improved patient survival rates. Early diagnosis can be achieved up to 85% of the time in screen-detected lung cancers.

Among those early-stage cancers, the cure rate approaches 80%.

S M O K I N G C E S S AT I O N Smoking and inhalation of tobacco products are a large contributing factor to lung health and lung disease, such as lung cancer. Smoking cessation is important for prevention as well as intervention of lung diseases. Quitting smoking is difficult, but not impossible, and there are health benefits for quitting at every age.

There is not a one-size-fits-all approach to cessation, but many people find success in reducing usage of tobacco prior to quitting, using nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), such as the patch, gum or lozenges to help reduce cravings while quitting or seeking counseling, such as a cessation program or the Michigan Quitline.

spiritual care & code lavender AT H U R L E Y M E D I C A L C E N T E R Spiritual Care has been within the hallways of Hurley for some time, and we have seen many pastors, chaplains, deacons from various religions provide comfort within our walls. The latest to be included in the Pastoral Care repertoire is what is referred to as “Code Lavender.”

W H AT I S C O D E L A V E N D E R CODE LAVENDER is a crisis intervention tool used to support any person at Hurley Medical Center. Patients, family members, volunteers and healthcare staff can request a Code Lavender when a stressful event or series of stressful events occur in the hospital. Code Lavender is designed to provide emotional, spiritual and physical support to healthcare workers during times of high stress or loss on the job. The purpose is to assist the clinical staff member or group of members who experienced a loss or crisis by encouraging them to discuss and process the event before returning to work. This support may take the form of holding a discussion to breathing exercises to spiritual support, such as meditation and prayer.

“Code lavender provides a spiritual and emotional healing environment at Hurley," noted Don Cox, Director of Spiritual Care. “I strongly encourage caregivers to utilize this service. Code Lavender is an opportunity for Hurley to provide a program that works to provide emotional healing during a time of loss or crisis.”

H O W C O D E L AV E N D E R B E G A N This code was pioneered by Cleveland Clinic in an effort to prevent nurses from experiencing longterm mental and emotional trauma as a result of compassion fatigue, alarm fatigue and every other form of fatigue that comes from being in a stressful

healthcare environment. Code Lavender was adopted at Hurley approximately two years prior through Spiritual Care. Requests have increased primarily due to our team members experiencing the effects of COVID. Our environment involves a great deal of critical care and trauma not just through COVID but daily in our emergency department, NICU, PICU, Peds and all other areas within the medical center. The increase in loss and trauma has resulted in a greater need for initiatives that assist in promoting emotional healing, such as Code Lavender.

“People who have their own concerns and those who work with loss, may take it as a personal loss, noted Don. “They learn to love the patient and their family.”

H O W T O I N I T I AT E C O D E L A V E N D E R Employees are encouraged to request a Code Lavender through their manager. The manager will contact the Spiritual Care Office at 810.262.9517 to schedule. When a request is made, the team, along with support staff, such as the chaplain, doctors and other medical staff will gather in a room to offer support. It is similar to a debriefing, allowing an opportunity for discussion and support.

Don stressed, “While Code Lavender is an excellent tool that Hurley has integrated into their caregiving processes, it is not meant to prevent burnout. It is a crisis management tool, used to ease the effects of stressful situations so that clinical staff can push through no matter how they are feeling. It is meant to help ease the long-term effects of stress from a clinical environment, such as anxiety and PTSD. A nurse who is not supported by her team after a major stressful incident may find herself feeling isolated and emotionally compromised, but needing to keep working anyway. I strongly encourage staff to speak with their nurse manager and request a Code Lavender.”

As employees of a healthcare organization, we see and hear things that defy human nature, for better and for worse. In more adverse instances, it is normal to feel strong and sometimes mixed or conflicting emotions that can be unsettling and derailing. Consequently, our knee-jerk reaction may be to ignore or push down the emotions and related thoughts. Unfortunately, coping by avoiding often leads to disproportionate and misdirected emotional responses when similar emotional states return in the future. Avoidant coping also increases our risk for depression, anxiety and burnout.

With practice, we can identify our emotions in live-time and see them as a signal that warrants

recognition. We can notice them without judgement and with compassion, accept them, and consider how best to proactively proceed. Oftentimes, strong emotions call for connecting with others and engaging in self-care activities that promote our wellness; they can also signal a need to restore our sense of safety, seek comfort or help and gain new coping skills.

Next time there’s an involuntary urge to push away strong or conflicting feelings, remember that there’s a reason emotions stem from one of the oldest parts of our brain - they’re adaptive! Lean in and learn from them.

hurley and the WORK BY MOSAIC ARTISTS OF MICHIGAN The Mosaic Artists of Michigan donated a unique “quilt” featuring Michigan flora and fauna, as a soothing piece offering comfort to Hurley families and visitors. Delphi Glass of East Lansing contributed the background art glass, the substrate was courtesy of Genesee Ceramic Tile of Burton and the quilt-style squares were created by individual mosaic artists from around the state. The artwork itself was hung in the main lobby of the Medical Center, across from the Lobby Shop to be enjoyed by visitors and employees.

The Hurley Foundation thanks the Mosaic Artists of Michigan, specifically Randee Pieper and Virginia Stevens for their leadership on this project and donation.

Tarnesa Martin, RN, BSN, Hurley’s Patient Resource & Community Advocate, serves as a community liaison identifying and engaging in effective modes of communication with minority populations in an effort to reduce disparities, improve health literacy, identify access to care opportunities and to improve patient experience through education and understanding.

Tarnesa participates in community outreach and educational events establishing relationships with community groups, minority-owned businesses, faith-based organizations and other trusted channels that serve minority populations.

Tarnesa believes in engaging those who need care and their families as partners in their own healthcare.

She reinforces this through her messaging as she works to educate the community on health issues and the resources available through Hurley. She attends many events where she not only finds herself in the role of community advocate and educator but also lending a hand as a first-aid provider. Tarnesa has been very busy this past month representing Hurley at many community events.

She is currently studying nursing at Grand Valley State University and is scheduled to graduate in December 2023. Abigail was named the recipient of the Sally Joseph Volunteer Scholarship and will receive $2,000 in scholarship funds to assist in her education in the medical field.

august of the month ROSIE GORDON

Rosie Gordon is our August Volunteer of the Month. Rosie volunteers in the lobby shop working as a cashier, stocking and assisting customers.

With her soft spoken, friendly voice, along with a hint of a southern accent, and her warm personality, Rosie is the perfect selection for volunteer of the month. She is passionate about working with people and believes in being kind to everyone. She credits growing up in the southern part of the United States, East St. Louis, Illinois, to be exact. “I was taught to be kind growing up, so now it comes natural to me,” Rosie said.

Rosie has a great deal of customer service, working close to 20 years at Meijer. She also worked in a day care and noted that she enjoys working with kids. Rosie was directed by the Valley Area Agency on Aging to Hurley’s volunteer program and has been here for four years. In addition to working in the Lobby Shop, Rosie has volunteered in the surgical lounge and outpatient clinic and finds she has a talent for working with people. Volunteers come from all

walks of life bringing a variety of skills to help improve the lives of others. Rosie brings her own personal touch, delivering service with kindness and a smile.

Volunteering does benefit the volunteer, the patients and the families. Rosie reinforced this statement, “It is very beneficial when helping someone. Just by being kind or lending an ear when they want to talk. Patients and employees sometimes use the lobby shop as a place to get away. By being pleasant and good to people, I feel I am helping and giving back.”

When you commit to volunteering at Hurley, you are an integral part here. Each volunteer provides a wide variety of valuable services to patients and staff and are the compassionate, caring face of Hurley. Rosie notes, “I would recommend volunteering at Hurley because you can help someone else. You do make a difference and it is very rewarding. The staff are so pleasant here.

There are so many good people. My favorite part of volunteering is being able to help someone.”

Rosie has 2 daughters and 3 grandsons—ages 5, 8 and 14. When she is not volunteering, she enjoys going to church, dancing, walking, exercising and traveling.

CHARLES LAWLER, CENTRAL TRANSPORT

Hurley Wellness celebrates employees who are passionate about health and wellness, whether that means the individuals have already achieved their goals or are still working toward them or that they foster a culture of wellness. Charles Lawler, the Wellness Hero of the Quarter, not only strives to reach his own wellness goals but also promotes wellness to others, both at Hurley and in the community, as owner and coach of the Flint Fury Football Team, where he coaches ages 18 and up players.

“I value wellness and think it is important to monitor your health through both exercise and nutrition. Health and wellness are important to me. I want to take care of myself so that I can be around as long as possible and capable of teaching,” Charles said.

Charles has been committed to wellness for quite some time, working out since he was 20.

He commits four days a week, at minimum, to either strength training through weight lifting or cardio using the elliptical exercise machine. “I exercise using the equipment on the 6th floor. It is very convenient. There are treadmills, elliptical

machines and weights. All the equipment is of good quality. I enjoy speaking with and encouraging others who come there to work out,” Charles said.

Charles also acknowledges the importance of nutrition and credits his interest with his first Wellness Challenge. “When I started working at Hurley, I participated in my first Wellness Challenge. I began with cardio, using the elliptical machine and actually got up to an hour. I reduced my weight by participating in the challenge and that was what got me thinking about nutrition,” Charles said.

His advice for others, “Include cardio and weights, along with nutrition in your wellness goals. Cardio works your heart and weights work the rest of your body.” Charles stressed the importance of nutrition and has put this into practice noting that he has gone vegan. “I started watching what I was eating and worked toward changing bad eating habits. Nutrition is as important to wellness as an exercise program,” Charles said.

Charles was surprised to discover that he was nominated for Wellness Hero of the Quarter, saying “I appreciate that Hurley has a wellness program for their employees. In a sense, they have the same vision for wellness that I do.”

Charles promotes and demonstrates a healthy lifestyle. He shares his knowledge of nutrition and exercise with anyone who inquires. He leads by example. From the "earth" diet to taking time from his day to get exercise and his devotion to his beloved team, the Flint Fury, Charles is a true leader and inspiration to all he comes in contact with.

In recognition of his dedication to wellness, Charles received a Wellness medal, day off with pay, Hurley Wellness jacket, a 6-month membership to the YMCA, and a $20 Gift Card from the Farmers’ Market. Congratulations, Charles!

I provided coverage on ambulatory surgery and 5E and still enjoy picking up shifts as a floor nurse to this day. I really enjoy engaging with physicians and am interested in learning their knowledge and how it applies to coding and documentation. I recently completed my bachelor's degree in business administration.
