The Executive Compensation & Compliance Committee considers all policy matters concerning Hurley Medical Center’s executive compensation, and matters related to the performance evaluation of the President and CEO. "Mr. Flores has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 1990. He currently serves as the District Director for U.S. Representative Daniel Kildee. Prior to joining Representative Kildee's office, Mr. Flores was very active in the health care field. Some of his accomplishments include the founding of Community Recovery Services and serving as Vice President of Health Integration for Sacred Heart Rehabilitation. Mr. Flores’ education includes a Board Secretary and Chair of the Board Quality Paralegal Certificate in 1977 from Adelphi University in Management & Accreditation Committee and the Board Executive Compensation & Performance Evaluation New York, NU, and certifications and training in Substance Committee.

In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board.

Given that many of our Board members have served multiple five-year terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter.

I am thankful to the board and to the outstanding Hurley personnel support staff that assures accurate record of actions, that correspondence is received and attended to and critical documents are securely retained.

Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. Leading the meetings of the Board Quality Management & Accreditation Committee and the Board Executive Compensation & Performance Evaluation Committee, is generally the role of the Secretary. This month we will feature our Board Secretary, Chris Flores.

Hurley Medical Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Keith Poniers as the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer effective June of 2021. Keith replaces Cass Wisniewski who retired after twenty years of service at Hurley Medical Center. Keith previously held the position of Controller in Hurley's Finance Department. Keith has over twentyseven years of reimbursement, financial and accounting experience, with highly specialized knowledge in payer contracting and Medicaid Special Payment programs. Keith is a graduate of Indiana University and a resident of Davison, Michigan.

SUMMER JENKINS, VICE PRESIDENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES

Hurley Medical Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Summer Jenkins as the Vice President of Human Resources effective May of 2021. Summer replaces Tyree Walker who retired after a combined 22 years of service at Hurley Medical Center. Summer has been at Hurley for ten years and previously held the position of Benefits, Compensation and Recruitment Manager in Hurley's Human Resource Department.

Summer has developed significant proficiency in Human Resource policy throughout her twenty-four years of HR experience, with extensive expertise in employee benefit plans and compensation planning. Summer is a graduate of Baker College and a resident of Goodrich, Michigan.

hurley diversity & inclusion council June was an exciting month for recognizing and celebrating greater diversity and inclusion. The D&I council was pleased to share information relating to Juneteenth and Pride Month.

Juneteenth is a significant day in our history. On June 19, 1865 federal troops rode into Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved people that they were indeed free. This came two years after President Abraham Lincoln read the Emancipation Proclamation and a few months after he signed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery and "involuntary servitude."

On June 17, 2021 President Biden signed a bill to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Throughout history, Juneteenth has been known by many names: Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, and today, it’s a National Holiday.

Juneteenth was truly an opportunity to continue to learn, connect with each other and reflect on how we can move forward and achieve permanent and lasting change.

The City of Flint recognized June as pride month. The month is meant to recognize the impact that LGBTQ individuals, advocates and allies have made in the history of the United States and around the globe. Community organizers have hosted Pride Festivals in the City of Flint in the past. This year a series of smaller events were held.

Honoring both of these celebrations is part of the City's ongoing commitment to promoting social justice and upholding our community's tradition as a leader in the fight for equality.

Dorothy, when asked how she found out she was nominated for Employee of the Month, noted that one of the managers said to report to the office at 10:30am.

She reported but thought perhaps it was for a department matter.

The announcement was made and Dorothy reflects, “I was shocked; totally surprised. I do not do nice things to get rewarded. My father always said, “If you wake up in the morning and you feel like you did the best thing you could yesterday, then you are a good person.” If I can just make someone happy for ten seconds, Dorothy adds, it feels so good. It is how you live your life. You give back if you are able. There are many calls received where they ask for me by name and that feels so good. I try really hard. I feel bad for those who are ill and have to be here in the hospital.”

Dorothy credits her department managers with providing support and encouragement. “My managers are so good to me. If I need something, they are always so helpful. They are wonderful,” notes Dorothy. When Dorothy is not here helping in the kitchen, she enjoys spending time with her family.

Employee Appreciation will still be held during the last week of July but given all that everyone has gone through this past year, we wanted to do something extra to share our sincere appreciation for all that you do! LAURIE EBNER, RN

aurie Ebner, RN, has been an integral part of our Pediatric team for the past nine years and has been selected as one of our DAISY Award winners. She grew up in Milford, Michigan, where she graduated and following along with best friends, went on to Central Michigan University. Laurie always wanted to be a nurse and when completing the high-school job questionnaire, received confirmation that it was the degree to pursue. She found herself, however, pursuing a degree in graphic design and went into marketing and advertising.

Graduating from Central Michigan, she worked at a Chrysler Ad Agency in Detroit, Michigan, in their marketing department. The economy plummeting back in 2007, led her back to pursuing her dream job of becoming a nurse.

Laurie came to Hurley while attending University of Michigan-Flint. She did her clinical rotation here and quickly new that she wanted to be a pediatric nurse.

Her Preceptor being a PICU nurse helped to reinforce her decision. Laurie reflects, “It was so nice to have pediatric experience, working with women and children, and know that this is where you want to be. We focus a great deal on family-centered care on Peds. What I like best is providing care to the patient but also supportive care to the families. When children are sick and have to be hospitalized, you learn to listen to them and get to know them. It is amazing. I love

for extraordinary nurses interacting with kids of all ages, day old and up to 23 years old. It is great to interact with all of those ages and pretty amazing to see how strong and resilient they are.”

As an RN, Laurie has a long list of responsibilities and even acknowledges that there are difficult times, especially when a child does not understand why you are performing a treatment. She does note that there are so many wonderful memories. She cites, “It is pretty amazing when a kiddo is discharged and they do not want to go.

They are no longer scared. It is a wonderful feeling when you have managed to make a serious situation not so scary and they have fun. They are indeed spoiled. They are crying because they are being discharged, and they do not want to go. These are the memories that I will always cherish.”

When asked what she thought when she found out she was nominated for the Daisy Award, Laurie noted, “I was shocked. It is such an honor. I do not feel that I do anything above and beyond and there are so many others who are deserving.” Laurie noted she came into work that day and everyone was acting strange. Her coworkers pulled out their phones to start videotaping and then, she saw her manager, Heather Rayburn, Jeff Overman, Teresa Bourque and Melany Gavulic. “I thought one of my coworkers was receiving the award. I actually thought, what is going on here? I can tell you that two hours later and I am still shaking.”

Laurie has been married for 24 years and

has 2 children—a son 22 and a daughter who is 18. She notes that she loves beaches, especially the Michigan Great Lakes. She enjoys traveling—her favorite place being Michigan, which she notes is beautiful. She credits her grandmother for inspiring her, as she was amazing and a hard worker.

Laurie’s grandmother was a social worker for the State of New York. Laurie also credits her awesome coworkers who are such an inspiration to her.

The Flint and Genesee Group worked with the Hurley Foundation to deliver 500 meals donated by the Mott Foundation to show their continued support of Hurley Frontline workers. May’s Volunteer of the Month is Amanda George. Amanda is a volunteer at the Hurley Food FARMacy.

Amanda explains, “Physicians refer patients to receive a two-day supply of nutrient-dense foods for their household each month for six months.

The focus is on children, seniors and individuals with chronic conditions, such as hypertension, congestive heart failure and diabetes. I have a wide-range of responsibilities that begin with helping our team build a rapport with the patient to get a better understanding of their eating habits.

This allows us to help advise them on which foods to choose that best meet their nutritional needs. This by far is my favorite part of being at the Food Farmacy--building these relationships and then seeing the positive outcomes for individual patients. We help patients along their wellness journey by working with them to create healthier eating habits in the hopes of showing improvements in blood pressure, lowered blood sugar levels and overall health. We also encourage patients to try our healthy recipes and introduce them to fun ways to cook nutritious foods.”

The Food FARMacy offers locallygrown produce, lean meat, eggs, low-fat dairy items, whole grains and canned items without added salt or sugar. Patients are advised on choosing foods that best meet their nutritional needs. The home-grown produce is provided locally right here through Edible Flint and Flint Fresh. In addition to volunteering here at Hurley, Amanda volunteers at Edible Flint. She expressed how she is able to see the entire process--the food being grown, packaged and then distributed. “My favorite part of volunteering are the “light bulb” moments. When patients share with us their personal wins like not using salt when they made a dish.

Or, 'My A1C has gone down because of how I'm eating. I am trying broccoli for the first time, loving it and learning how to cook in healthier ways.' Hearing the positive results of their efforts and seeing what you did in action brings the process to full circle,” Amanda explains.

Amanda noted how she enjoyed not only building relationships with the patients but all the other aspects of the Food FARMacy, including her involvement in the Wellness Team Spice Collection Challenge “Spice it Up.”

“The spice drive brought in over 1,400 spices that were donated to the Food FARMacy, and I helped with sorting all those spices. Patients are then given the opportunity to take home a different spice each visit. If we're going to advise patients to cook healthier, it's important to provide them with the means to do so,” Amanda notes.

Amanda Graduated from MSU in 2020 with a Biosystems Engineering degree and also has a Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Minor.

Amanda chose to volunteer here at Hurley through AmeriCorps when she was informed that a food position which entailed educating people was available. AmeriCorps is a voluntary civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors that engages adults in public service work with a goal of "helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. Amanda, interested in food systems and health and wellness as a whole, accepted the opportunity.

Amanda noted, “I appreciate the mission of what we do at the Food FARMacy. I wish there were more places that provided this service, reaching a larger patient population.” She credits Hurley with also getting her connected with Edible Flint. “I enjoy growing the produce that gets served to the

local people. Growing and harvesting produce and then taking it over to the Food FARMacy to give to patients is so gratifying. It is nice to see food grown by local people and given to local people who are going to use it in a better way.”

Amanda notes that she would recommend volunteering at Hurley to others. “There are so many different resources available at Hurley; there is a wealth of opportunity in so many different areas. There are many things that Hurley offers to the community.

I volunteered for the Global Earth Day clean up and saw firsthand how staff at Hurley really care about their community, even about the environment. It is more personal here at Hurley. I'm so grateful for the opportunities and experiences I've had at the Food FARMacy and with the Hurley employees that have impacted me along the way."

Hurley offered a live virtual event on Joint Replacement on Monday, May 3, on Facebook and YouTube. Viewers at home tuned in for a live discussion with orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Paul Telehowski, as he discussed topics surrounding joint replacement, arthritis, treatment options and Hurley’s Center for Joint Replacement.

W H AT I S A R T H R I T I S ?

Arthritis is a type of joint pain with more than 100 related variants and associated conditions and is the leading cause of disability in America, affecting over 30 million US adults.

People of all ages, gender and race can have arthritis, although it’s most common among women and those who are closer to middle age. Those who have a family history of arthritis or who regularly smoke are also more at risk of developing arthritis. Common symptoms include joint swelling, stiffness, pain and a decreased range of motion and can result in chronic pain, which limits one’s ability to do daily activities. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own healthy tissue in your joints, whereas osteoarthritis is related to wear-and-tear damage of the joints.

T R E AT M E N T O P T I O N S

Increasing physical activity and planning weight loss goals can be beneficial in helping to treat joint pain, along with physical therapy, if needed. Medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids or diseasemodified antirheumatic drugs (DMARDS) may also be an option to help control or soothe joint pain. Along with medications, there are also different types of injections that can be put into the joints that may help to control the pain, such as steroids or viscosupplementation injections.

Ultimately, if none of these options seem to work for you or your pain continues to persist, surgery may be the best option. lifesaving treatments: VACCINES PROTECT AGAINST SEVERE COVID-19

Without a crystal ball, no one can say when the novel coronavirus will relinquish its hold and let us get back to a bit of normalcy. However, two things have infectious disease doctors excited: the COVID-19 vaccines and better treatments than we had early on in the pandemic.

We’re all aware of the progress made in treating COVID-19, but what many people may not know is that we now have treatments available before symptoms become severe that help prevent disease progression. Danielle Osterholzer, MD, Director of Infectious Diseases at Hurley Medical Center, says it’s important to understand that these monoclonal antibody treatments can keep you from getting hospitalized or very sick when administered shortly after infection. “We provide that right here in our Emergency Room when we diagnose someone who is high risk, but that’s something patients should seek out if they’re high risk and they haven’t been sick for more than 10 days,” she adds.

WHO CAN RECEIVE MONOCLONAL ANTIBODY INFUSIONS

There are certain criteria for who can receive the monoclonal antibody infusions, but they generally include those who are over age 65 or are over 55 with chronic medical conditions. The infusion works by preventing the virus from attaching to the patient’s cells, which makes it difficult for the virus to continue replicating and causing harm. So far, Hurley Medical Center has provided almost 400 of these lifesaving treatments.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT INFECTION IN THE FIRST PLACE

The most important thing we can do to prevent infection in the first place is getting ourselves and our family, friends, and neighbors vaccinated. Even those who already had COVID-19 should be vaccinated because the vaccines provide longer, better protection against reinfection than the temporary immunity gained from having COVID-19. It’s also critical for everyone to be immune at the same time, stresses Dr. Osterholzer.

“Vaccination is the way to get all of us immune at the same time,” she says. “It’s just too much of a death toll to try to get there through natural infection. We need everyone immune and the best way is through vaccination.”

COVID VACCINES

For those who are hesitant, concerned about how quickly the vaccines were developed, and are waiting to see if new side effects appear in the real world, outside of clinical trials, the experts are in consensus: the vaccines approved in the U.S. are safe, highly effective, and crucial for getting back to normal. Dr. Osterholzer notes that only bureaucratic hurdles and paperwork were sped up, not the science behind the vaccines. Plus, much of the technology was already in development for years with other viruses.

As severe illness is exceedingly rare after full vaccination, that is the best way to protect ourselves and our loved ones from getting sick or needing the monoclonal antibody treatment available at Hurley Medical Center.

“The only way I see it getting back to normal is through vaccination,” Dr. Osterholzer reiterates. “I’m optimistic about the summertime and the fall if people continue to get vaccinated.”

“It’s very safe,” Dr. Osterholzer explains.

“It’s being tracked very closely. Hundreds of millions of people have been vaccinated now in the U.S. Less than 0.01% of people in Michigan who’ve been vaccinated have acquired COVID-19 after vaccination, when they’ve completed the full series and are fully immune—so it works very well.

I worked 12 years managing a 50-bed medical, surgical unit and saw firsthand the effects of neglecting one’s health can cause on a person’s health. I decided to transition into the role of Patient Resource & Community Advocate giving me an opportunity to connect better with the community and help fulfill the vision of Hurley to “transform the health of our community and residents.”

Casey, when asked how she found out she was nominated for the Patriot Award noted, “The request to attend the presentation was made that day, and I actually thought it was for someone else. I felt somewhat bad thinking someone on my unit was being awarded and I did not even know. Then I saw J.T. and realized the award was actually for me. It was very moving. Being recognized made me understand how much it means to other people when you take the time to work with them, assuring them that any obstacles they may have, we are going to get through.

You never know how much it means to other people when you show them kindness and support.”

Casey started at Hurley in 2009 as a graduate nurse. She was employed here before that as an extern in 2006. Upon graduation, she started working on 7E Med/Surg. She transferred from there to the ICU after a year.

She worked in ICU for five years and then accepted a House Director position. She worked as a House Director for one year. She then assumed a position as a Manager on PCU and the intermediate critical care unit.

Last year in March 2020, she transferred to the medical ICU and Coronary Intensive Care Unit. She noted it may have been during COVID but she has no regrets. She is where she wants to be.

As summer has begun, exposure to ultraviolet rays is higher. It is important to take proper care of your skin by providing adequate protection. As you spend quality time outdoors in the sun, remember these tips to keep your skin hydrated and lower your risk of future skin problems.

• Switch up your skin-care routine.

Similar to how our clothing changes with the seasons, you should consider doing the same with your skin routine. Swap out the heavier products for lighter ones to reduce risk of pore clogging and acne breakouts.

• Remember to use moisturizers.

Potentially invest in Vitamin C serums. This serum improves the appearance of fine lines and helps prevent hyperpigmentation.

• Shorten your showers. Warmer weather

brings more outdoor activities. You may spend time in pools or lakes, walk or run outside, or spend time on the beach. Shorten your showers and/or baths to reduce the risk of the hot water leading to drier skin.

• Always keep sunscreen handy.

Regardless of being under the sun or the clouds, an SPF of 30 or higher should be used to protect your skin. Don’t forget to reapply when spending extra hours outside.

• Enjoy the shade. Try to remain in the shade as much as possible. Being in the sun for long periods of time can drain your energy. Also it can dehydrate you and increase your risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

• Consume large amounts of water, daily. Also eat more fruits and vegetables, which have a higher water content. Staying hydrated keeps your skin healthy and can help you recover from sunburn or skin damage.
