CORPORATE COMPLIANCE

An important way to understand your role with maintaining compliance at Hurley is to be familiar with the Standard Practices pertaining to compliance. These standard practices are located in the 5100-5199 Corporate Compliance folder on the intranet. This month I am highlighting SP 5106 – Role of Federal and State Laws in Preventing Fraud, Waste and Abuse. I mention this one first, not for you to be able to recite law references, but more so this section:

· Act with honesty and integrity in all business activities.

· Follow all laws and regulations that apply to work activities, including requirements of the Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health care programs. These requirements generally include maintaining complete and accurate medical records, applying appropriate charges and submitting only complete and accurate claims for services provided.

· Seek out supervisors, managers, directors or the Corporate Compliance Officer - or make an anonymous referral as described below - when you have a question about a possible false claim or other issues identified in the Hurley Medical Center Code of Conduct.

Please contact me at Sshue1@hurleymc.com if you have questions or other topics relating to the Compliance Program at Hurley you would like to be addressed.

Anonymous referrals can be made by calling 1.866.835.0555

CHILD & FAMILY LIFE

Medical environments, especially hospitals, can be an intimidating situation especially for children. Infants, children, and their families find themselves not only coping with medical procedures but dealing with incredible situations from illness to injuries, disabilities or even bereavement. Hurley Medical Center’s Child & Family Life team is a group of trained professionals who work with Hurley doctors, nurses, social workers and beyond to help children and their families cope with the stress and uncertainty that comes with being in a hospital environment. They work with all children and their families, free of charge, to

meet their emotional needs through coping, comfort and education. From medical play to gaming, the team offers different ways to ease stress and anxiety in children during medical visits.  They also empower parents and caregivers to help their children by showing them additional ways to cope and lessen their own stress and anxiety.

Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) walk children through medical procedures using terms they can understand so they know what to expect, helping prevent trauma that may occur due to the procedure. They often engage young patients in a variety of coping strategies to help reduce anxiety and answer questions to help diminish the fear of the unknown. They provide support and distraction during medical procedures, offering opportunities for play and expressive activities. For example, they will prepare a child for surgery by decorating the anesthesia mask with them, letting them practice putting the mask on, role playing with stuffed animals and even using the mask for blowing bubbles. They often bring a sense of fun and comfort in spite of challenging circumstances. They promote family-centered care by providing information, advocacy and support to families of pediatric patients. They are working to help the child cope with what to expect and play an important role not only in decreasing stress and anxiety, but building trust.

Caitlin Bramble, CCLS is the new face of Child & Family Life at Hurley. As the team's new director, Cait is hoping to support the hospital's mission of providing support to patients, families and staff by increasing the team's involvement in all pediatric care areas. She brings years of experience with her, having worked in a Burn Trauma Intensive Care Unit (BTICU) in Salt Lake City and most

hurley news 6 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER

recently as a member of the Child and Family Life team at Mott. Cait pursued a career in Child Life, noting; “Everyone has their skillset. I could never do the essential and extremely difficult job of nursing. I found that what I can do is help these patients be what they are, kids, by keeping them playing, laughing and singing. But the work goes beyond just play. Certified Child Life Specialists can help a child cope with pain and having to be away from normal life. We can help them trust their team. Ultimately we, along with the rest of their medical team, can help them recover to the best of their ability with the least amount of negative impact. ”

Not only is there Cait, our Certified Child Life Specialist, but there is Channing Pearson, our Hospital Gaming Specialist (HGS) and Kaitlyn Larrea, our Child Life Assistant (CLA). Their goal is to normalize the hospital experience through self-expression and play, which have been found to have huge benefits in healing. Channing is building programs to help bring technology and gaming to the bedside. Kaitlyn ensures arts and crafts and play supplies are stocked and available. They help keep the play spaces cleaned and stocked with toys, games, and comfort items. They aid in managing volunteers and facilitating events, such as End of Treatment celebrations and birthdays. They provide one-on-one bedside play experiences with patients unable to leave their room. Channing and Kaitlyn's work is essential to bringing day-to-day cheer and laughter to kids of all ages receiving care at Hurley.

Child & Family Life can be anywhere, a dentist office, school or any place a child needs support. Here at Hurley, Child & Family Life is growing to work with children in Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Pediatric Emergency Department, Gastroenterology,

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Surgery, Imaging, and clinics. The primary goal is to improve the patient's and family's experience with health care, reduce stress and improve communication all with the hopes of improving the health of the child. Hurley has always understood that children need this service, which is why our program has been around in some shape or form for 40 years.

DEPARTMENT PHARMACY

Pharmacy is Hurley’s Team of the Season. This team is led by Amy Benko, Director of Pharmacy and Vice President of Patient Care Services, Jenny Hubble, Assistant Director of Pharmacy and Wendy KoontzBeatty, Pharmacy Operations Coordinator. The Pharmacy Team are critical members of Hurley, as they essentially provide patients with safe and effective medication therapy. They are recognized for Team of the Season for demonstrating a significantly high level of collaboration during a time when there has been several workflow changes in the Pharmacy. Wendy Koontz-Beatty and Jenny Hubble were interviewed for this article.

As the pharmacy strives to decrease turnaround and improve customer service to both medical staff and patients, there have been many changes implemented to how service is provided. For the past 20+ years, the pharmacy utilized a robot to get medications to patients. They found last spring that this robot needed to be replaced. An entirely new workflow was identified where in place of filling medication orders in the pharmacy and sending each dose, (47) new high-capacity medication dispensing Pyxis machines have been placed on nursing units.

This allows medications to be maintained at bedside and drastically improves the timeliness of service provided. This first phase of the project was a massive undertaking. Pharmacy spent countless hours designing, building, testing and stocking these new machines. The design/build/test part of this project took more than six months to complete and then implementation took another eight weeks.

The robot has now officially been dismantled to prepare for the second phase of this project. Beginning in April, the Pharmacy will implement two new medication storage carousels, in place of the robot, to assist with restocking the new Pyxis machines and balancing pharmacy inventory. While working on these multiple workflow changes, this Team has not only continued to provide uninterrupted day-to-day service but consistently rises to the occasion of meeting the challenge of implementing these changes. These changes have required a great deal of time and effort. We recognize that this will be another monumental project but there is no doubt that this Team will handle this next challenge with as much determination and grace as they did the first.

DEPARTMENT PHARMACY

"This year has really been a year of creativity, innovation and transformation for the pharmacy. This department is genuinely deserving of such a title. I am beyond grateful to our entire team for all of the hard work and dedication that made these workflow changes such a success. We truly needed all of our team members to complete this project. I am so honored to be a part of this department, and I am so proud of what we've been able to accomplish!”

“Pharmacy has experienced significant changes over the past few months in their workflow and will continue to see even more in the upcoming months. During this time, this team has continued to work hard, not only providing day-to-day services but demonstrating a high-level of cooperation and teamwork that are helping to successfully initiate these changes in workflow. It is for this reason that we believe it is extremely important that this team be recognized.”

“The pharmacy team is very deserving in being named Team of the Season.  Every day, pharmacists and technicians work closely together and play a crucial role in ensuring safe and effective medication use for our patients. Their contribution to patient care is so important, and I am very proud of the entire team!”

In January 2023, Hurley’s Employee Engagement launched the internal “Thanks a LOTTO” campaign, inspired by the exceptional service provided by many employees as noted in Press Ganey and online reviews. Each employee received thank you cards containing $1 Michigan instant lottery tickets, with additional tickets for those named multiple times. The excitement was palpable, with hopes high for a big winner among us! Prizes ranged from $2 to $5,000.

Fast forward one year, and we're thrilled to report that nearly 500 thank-you cards were sent out in 2023. While the $5,000 grand prize remained elusive, we had numerous winning tickets ranging from $2 to $100. Ultimately, our patients emerged as the biggest winners, benefitting from the exceptional care provided by those recognized in the reviews.

Now, Thanks a LOTTO cards will be distributed quarterly, ensuring continued recognition of our dedicated staff. These cards have been making waves across various departments,

including Emergency, Mother/Baby, PEDS, PICU, NICU, CCU, ICU, Neuro Trauma Surgical Burn, 5East, 6East Joint, 7East, 9East, OB/GYN Clinic, and Wound Care Clinic. Managers are encouraged to celebrate these acknowledgments, and the feedback from them has been overwhelmingly positive.

In the fourth quarter of 2023 (October, November, December), over 100 individuals were specifically mentioned in positive reviews. We encourage staff to draw attention to the Patient Information wall clings in all patient rooms and prompt happy patients to scan the HAPPY QR code. This is where they can nominate those who have provided exceptional care.

Let's continue to celebrate the dedication and hard work of our team as we move forward into another year of serving our community with excellence. Congratulations to all our winners, and here's to many more successes ahead!

What is Heart Healthy Living?

Heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, however there is a lot you can do to protect your heart and stay healthy. Heart-healthy living involves understanding your risk, making healthy choices, turning healthy choices into healthy habits, and taking steps needed to reduce your risk of heart disease. By taking preventative measures, you can lower your risk of developing heart disease and improve your overall health and well-being. There are several lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk of heart disease.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS AND THEN MANAGE THEM

Maintaining healthy cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and A1c levels are an important factor in heart-health. Though each type of heart disease differs, the common element is the disruption of healthy blood flow to the heart or from the heart to the rest of the body.

· Get your annual physical. People with high blood pressure or high cholesterol are often asymptomatic.

· Take all prescriptions as prescribed. Put your prescriptions on auto-refill so you don’t miss any days.

· Check your blood pressure at home (or at work). Make sure it is staying within the healthy ranges your physician recommends.

· If your numbers are trending upward, contact your primary care physician or cardiologist for an appointment.

MAKE DIET AND EXERCISE A PRIORITY

Healthy choices are paramount to maintaining a healthy weight and helping to keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels in healthy ranges. But repetition matters! Physical activity strengthens your heart, and regular exercise can be added to even the busiest of schedules.

· Exercise at least 150 minutes a week.

· Add a variety of physical activities; walking, yoga, and strength training are great examples.

· Eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables.

· Reduce saturated fats and sugar sweetened beverages.

SAY NO TO TOBACCO

Tobacco cessation is perhaps the biggest impact you can make to your heart health - the CDC states that smoking is one of the greatest factors for developing heart disease. If you are already a smoker, work with a Tobacco Treatment Specialist or contact the Michigan Quitline to aid in your tobacco cessation.

for extraordinary nurses

In the realm of healthcare, nurses often become unsung heroes, devoting themselves to the well-being of patients and their families. Their compassion and dedication leave a lasting impact on the lives they touch. This month, we celebrate the outstanding contributions of Ashley Bellis, RN, as she is honored with the prestigious DAISY Award for her exceptional care and empathy at Hurley Medical Center.

Ashley graduated in 2004 from Garden City High School, Garden City, Michigan. She had her family and later when her youngest was in kindergarten, she returned to school pursuing a nursing degree at Mott Community College. Ashley attended her clinicals at all three hospitals-Genesys, McLaren and Hurley. It was during her second

year she found she needed to be on second shift in order to meet her children’s schedule. Hurley met her schedule and afterwards, she decided to remain here, beginning her career on 9East.

Ashley’s responsibilities include assessing and implementing care; including administering medications, changing wound dressings, preparing patients for surgery and many other duties revolving around patient care. It is not surprising that a patient nominated Ashley as she strongly believes,

“I care for patients like I would any one of my family members. I love to interact with patients and get to know them and their family.”
daisy award recipient
18 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER

Ashley’s nomination supports her belief:

"Ashley has been my nurse for two nights. She is very knowledgeable and quick to seek help if she needs to. She is sweet and has an upbeat personality. She treated me with respect and never acted like she was just doing her job. She is on time with medications and treatment. When she says she is going to do something, she does it."

Ashley acknowledged that she has worked here for a short period of time but has so many memories of working with her fellow RN’s. “We love to laugh and joke. The job cannot always be so serious.” Ashley appreciates the opportunity to do what she loves, nursing, and recognizes her preceptor, Kerri. “I loved my time in orientation. My preceptor, Kerri, was amazing! She taught me everything I needed to know. She was kind and never made me feel like I wasn’t smart enough.”

Ashley recognized her husband, Brandon, and her children, Hayden and Mackenzie. She also recognized her parents who have always been there to help when needed and continuously encourage her.

Ashley smiled explaining she feels as though she doesn't have many hobbies because she has been in school for so long. She does however love to spend time with her husband and children. It could be anything from watching movies to having fires in their backyard. The family enjoys vacationing and going somewhere different each time, especially if there is a lake. She also admits that she does enjoy watching sports.

When asked how she felt about being recognized for the DAISY Award, Ashley responded, “I was very surprised and did not realize what was going on. It made me feel so happy that I could help that patient! I always treat my patients as if they were one of my family members. I try to always have a good rapport with them.”

Have you witnessed an extraordinary registered nurse in action? Nominate an exceptional RN for the DAISY Award. Nomination forms are available in the Cafeteria, 8W Nursing Office and on the Hurley intranet.

February 29 - Two Hurley Employees Celebrate Birthday this Leap Year

Happy 11th Birthday to Hurley Maternal Fetal Medicine Ultrasonographer, Dayna Yue! Dayna is one of two Leap Year babies at Hurley. The second is Susan Rozboril, RN, who was off on this special day.

Dayna says as a child, her family would tease her saying she didn't have a birthday some years, since February 29th was not on the calendar. Dayna then started adding it in with a marker! When it wasn't a Leap Year, her family would celebrate on March 1st. Dayna’s mom said she didn't have Dayna yet on February 28th, so she would not celebrate that day. Now, Dayna enjoys celebrating any day because she knows it's unique. She's having a big celebration tonight to celebrate her 11th birthday - even though she has worked at Hurley 20 years!

andy holmes: a sucessful

Andy Holmes, 37, has lived in Flint for four and a half years and it was common for him to be outside and active with his friends, especially when he lived downtown. He had felt overweight for the majority of his life, and his highest weight was 325 pounds. A bigger concern than the number on the scale, though, was how he felt. On one excursion with his friends, walking around downtown Flint, Andy noticed that he was out of breath and felt as though he could not continue. Andy had been busy, both working and going to grad school. Graduating in late 2021 was a huge accomplishment, and it also gave him the room to consider his health.

After trying various diets and exercises over the years and finding it very difficult to lose even a small amount of weight while putting in maximum effort, Andy had been looking into bariatrics over the last few years. Reassured by the conversation with a friend who was a resident at Hurley, and his experience of Hurley’s good reputation in the community, he made his first appointment at the Hurley Bariatric Center for March 7th, 2022. Andy explains, “I’m glad I chose Hurley because people here helped me make a decision that’s had such an important impact on my health. There was no pressure in the appointments. Dr.

Wong was very kind, and very straightforward. He was generous with his time, and answered all of my questions so that I could take the information and make my own decision.” Andy decided that it was time to be all in and follow Dr. Wong’s treatment plan.

For Andy, that meant seeing the bariatric surgery as the first of many healthy lifestyle choices. The surgery went as planned, and he was home later that same day. He says, “The surgery, I think, is a tool to aid diet and exercise. I had to be all in, or the surgery alone wasn’t the answer. It was a big adjustment afterward, especially getting used to what portions I could eat, but alongside my friends and family, Hurley offered a lot of ongoing support through educational and group meetings.” Because of Andy’s resilience and his decision to commit to following Hurley’s post-surgery guidelines, he has seen a dramatic improvement to his overall health. Besides losing 160 pounds over 9 months, he no longer needs medications to maintain a normal blood pressure, and he feels much better day to day. He explains, “I’m sleeping much better, and have a lot more energy. Even little things, like cleaning the house. I used to have to vacuum a part of the house and sit down for a few minutes to catch my breath. I don’t have to do that anymore.

"I hope this inspires people to go through with this process because it’s an easy process once you make the decision to be all in, but it can be so hard on your mental and physical health to be overweight."

weight loss story

I’m able to physically do more, and feel much more comfortable doing more things.” Of course, he is spending a lot of time with his friends and they have started going on hikes. He’s even bought a rowing machine for his home.

When asked if there was anything he would like people to know, Andy says, “I hope this inspires people to go through with this process because it’s an easy process once you make the decision to be all in, but it can be so hard on your mental and physical health to be overweight.”

The Medical Weight Loss program at the Hurley Bariatric Center is designed to be a 12-week plan, customized to the medical needs of the individual, but it is also meant to educate the individual so they can maintain their success beyond the completion of the program. This approach extends to all of the various services offered at the center, which include different surgical and non-surgical options. Before surgery, the bariatric professionals help patients choose the right type of surgery for their situation. Following surgery, the staff continues to monitor progress while offering support, such as nutrition and exercise counseling, to help patients have a sustainable weight loss outcome.

Four Hurley resident physicians were selected for honors by medical students on the Flint Campus of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine on Feb. 23, 2024.

In recognition of the Arnold J. Gold Foundation's Thank-a-Resident Day in February, the following resident physicians from Hurley were selected by the students as most deserving of thanks for their teaching/mentoring:

Rohit Gupta, PGY4, Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics

Obstetrics & Gynecology rotations

Emily Pauls, PGY1

The selection was part of the activities for the 2023-2024 MSU CHM Gold Humanism Honor Society, according to Jennifer Shields, the 2023-2024 secretary for the Gold Honor Society.

The selected residents are to receive gift cards and virtual thank-you notes, "acknowledging the excellent educational support and/or mentorship opportunities" they provided to students, said Shields.
