We rely on employees to report changes or corrections to their personal information in a timely fashion.

Personal information collected by Hurley Medical Center can include, but is not limited to, employee names, home addresses, telephone numbers, personal (non-Hurley) e-mail addresses and emergency contacts.

Employees are expected to keep their personal information up to date. Employees can update their personal information in OASIS/ Employee Space. OASIS, the system of record for employee information, intersects Human Resources and Information Technology and allows HR processes to occur electronically and integrates with other systems utilized by the medical center.

Keeping your employee information current is the best way to ensure you receive important communications from the medical center.

ADDRESS CHANGES. To submit a change of address, go to the Personal Information page under My Profile. Click the Change Address button under the Addresses section and complete the form. The request routes to Human Resources for verification and approval.

NAME CHANGES. To submit a Name Change, log in to OASIS and click on “My Profile,” then click the “Change Name” button on the toolbar and complete the form. The request is submitted electronically to Human Resources for review and approval. You must provide an updated Social Security card with your new name, as required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Before we can change an employee’s name in the system, a legal document of the

meet our In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board.

Given that many of our Board members have served multiple five-year terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter.

Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. Leading the monthly meetings of the Board Finance Committee is generally the role of the Treasurer. This month we feature our Board Treasurer, Charlotte Edward.

CHARLOTTE EDWARDS, BOARD TREASURER AND CHAIR OF THE BOARD FINANCE/FACILITIES COMMITTEE

Per the Board Bylaws, The Treasurer shall, through the Finance/Facilities Committee and the Finance Department, be responsible for maintaining the books and records in a manner as to give a true and accurate accounting of Hurley Medical Center financial transactions.

As Chair of the Finance/Facilities Committee, Ms. Edwards coordinates with the Finance Department to assure that committee reviews and provides input on the annual operating and capital budgets; reviews the monthly financial reports; reviews the banking and investment of all Hurley Medical Center funds; is made aware of cost containment initiatives and all policy areas concerning the financial operations of Hurley Medical Center and consider policy matters concerning the acquisition, construction, sale or demolition of all Hurley Medical Center buildings, grounds, equipment and the maintenance thereof.

Charlotte Edwards has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2002. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. In 1997, Ms. Edwards earned a Certificate in Community & Economic Development from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and in 2013 she received the Community Spirit Award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis for her outstanding dedication to affordable housing and community economic development. Prior to her retirement, Ms. Edwards held the position of Vice President & Community Development Officer with Citizens Bank in Flint. Ms. Edwards is a passionate volunteer for community focused activities. She serves on the boards of the Community Capital Development Corporation, the Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute and is a Local Advisory Committee Member for LISC Flint (Local Initiatives Support Corporation). Ms. Edwards did serve as the Board of Managers Vice Chair from 2010-2011, as Board Chair from 2012-2013 and as Board Secretary from 20192020. In October of 2020, she was elected Treasurer of the Board of Managers.

CASS WISNIEWSKI, SENIOR VP & CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

On May 31, 2021, we will be wishing Cass Wisniewski, CFO, all the best, as he retires after twenty years of service. Cass held the role of Chief Financial Officer at Hurley since 2012 and was in the Controller role prior to this. Cass brought a wealth of financial health care experience with him to Hurley in 2001 when he became the Controller. Cass has been instrumental in bringing Hurley back from some alarming financial depths.

His financial acumen, deep knowledge around hospital special payments and willingness to work with the operational team to ensure the mission of the hospital stayed intact is what garnered him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the Board. Cass stayed active in the operational details of the medical center, which benefited from his conservative guidance. Cass could always be counted on to press for extreme expense management and revenue growth opportunities, as he knew how important it was that Hurley Medical Center stay afloat to continue to fulfill our very

important role in the community and the region.

Cass was well known in the School of Nursing building for his focus on wellness. It was exciting to announce him as the Wellness Hero of the Quarter before he went into retirement. The Finance team is committed to continuing their daily wellness focus after Cass retires. We will have to wait and see if they will continue to use Cass's obnoxious blow horn to get everyone together for a minute of exercise each day or if a gentler approach will be used to serve as a reminder to move more. Cass will be a tough act to follow, but he is leaving us in very capable hands. Effective June 1st, Hurley will welcome current Controller, Keith Poniers, into the role of Chief Financial Officer. Keith has been with Hurley since 2017 when he joined as the Associate Controller. Prior to joining Hurley, Keith worked for a health care consulting group and provided Hurley with governmental and third-party payment expertise. The Board of Managers was very pleased to be able to promote a very capable individual from within Hurley, as this provides a seamless transition for this important role. We wish Cass all the best in his retirement and thank him immensely for his contributions while at Hurley. We wish Keith all the best as he takes the reins from Cass!

ur April Employee of the Month is Charlene Kulis. Charlene has been at Hurley Medical Center for ten years and has made a career in Respiratory Therapy. Charlene credits her children for her career choice. “Both my children had breathing issues when they were smaller. Experiencing this personally motivated me to pursue a career in Respiratory Therapy,” She completed her courses at Baker College in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and then took two board exams with the State of Michigan for her license. Charlene was assigned to NICU for her clinicals where she knew immediately that she wanted to stay at Hurley. She reflects, “I came right from Baker to Hurley. During my clinicals, I knew immediately that I wanted to stay at Hurley. This is the only hospital I have ever worked. NICU was my passion, and I worked there for three years. All I wanted to do was work in NICU, and then I discovered the Emergency Room. ER is definitely my place.”

This is the most difficult. Whether you develop a rapport with the patient or if they came in through our ER in full arrest or an MVC, it is so difficult when you lose a patient. It is especially hard when the loss is a child.” Rick Barker, Director of Respiratory and Neurology Services and Director of Radiology, noted, “Charlene comes in to work every day with a high level of energy. She takes great care of our patients with a friendly smile and cheerful laugh.

Charlene is a great therapist who represents our department and Hurley very well. She is a great selection for this honor.”

Charlene expressed that she was totally surprised the day she was told that she was nominated for Employee of the Month. “I was literally shocked. I had no idea. When I saw senior leadership come up to our area, I knew something was up and actually wondered who was receiving Employee of Charlene takes pride in her job. She works directly the Month. ach year the Nurses Week Committee takes on the difficult assignment of picking just one nurse from Hurley’s amazing staff to recognize with the Sue Wright Nursing Award, established in honor of Hurley’s former Vice President of Nursing, Sue A. Wright. All nominees were exceptional selections, and it was a very difficult task to complete. The ten nominees were invited to a virtual celebration of nursing excellence, held on Friday, May 7, where the winner was announced.

She lived and breathed patient care. That compassion that she had for patients certainly included the entirety of her 9 East staff. It was this caring and compassion that made the unit feel like a family. That is what attracted me to stay here at Hurley when I completed nursing school.”

Kevin notes, “I have a great deal of history here and have built many wonderful relationships, as I worked on 9East and 4East ICU as an RN, and having now worked in Case Management for the past ten years. The CM role has definitely changed since I started in 2011, where I initially worked in PCU doing primarily utilization management. I am fortunate to be able to return to ICU in the care coordination role, which allows me to facilitate transition of care for the critical care patients. It is great to be able to once again work with intensivists and ICU nurses in a different role but still be a part of that team. I am grateful to use my knowledge in a beneficial manner and am fortunate to have this position.

I also work with a really great team in Case Management and the staff in ICU.”

This year’s winner is Kevin Meredith, RN, BSN. Kevin has been at Hurley for 32 years and in the words from one of his nomination letters, “Kevin handled his responsibilities with professionalism and compassion. If he was feeling stressed and overwhelmed, he remained courteous and approachable. Kevin is a stellar example of the nursing profession and deserving of the Sue Wright Award." A second letter expressed, "During this past year Kevin's clinical skills were really evident in his role as a case manager...The patients' doctors and bedside nurses changed...depending on assignments and schedules. Kevin was that consistent person, the life line to the families. Kevin when asked how he felt when he found out he was nominated for the Sue Wright Award expressed, “It is quite an honor. It is the most appreciative recognition of my career. Teresa Bourque, Senior Administrator Nursing/Chief Nurse, brought the letter to me noting I had been nominated. I was very surprised and emotional. Reviewing the other quotes from other current and past co-workers during the ceremony was both heartwarming and humbling.”

Kevin credits his wife, Wendy, for being a huge support and yes, they are a Hurley couple where she was once a Physician Assistant here at Hurley. “When you work in health care it is difficult to share your stories with people who are not in healthcare, as they do not have the context of what you are talking about. It is important to have her as she understands. I have 30+ years of memories here that include so many wonderful coworkers, physicians, patients and their families. The most rewarding is I have many past memories—memories of patients that I know I had a positive impact on their care and their end of life.”

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR MICHIGAN MEDICAL DOCTORS Authority: Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended

REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the board of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs.

A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

In Memoriam: Naresh K. Kinra, MD (February 27, 1946 to May 5, 2021) It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the loss of Naresh K Kinra, MD who passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Dr. Kinra was a Pediatrician in Flushing, Michigan and an esteemed physician at Hurley Medical Center for over 40 years. Dr. Kinra received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Government Medical College (Amritsar, Punjab) in 1971. Mobility as Medicine F O R T H E B O D I E S A N D S P I R I T S O F O U R PAT I E N T S 5 5 A N D O L D E R

urley’s Mobility Program was started when grant funding was identified that could support the need for mobility initiatives in our geriatric population. The population that is growing fastest in our community are our older adults. We strive constantly to serve them in a manner that will encourage them to trust and return to us for services when they need them.

The idea to start the program came from evidence- based research related to what is currently supporting mobility in hospital environments. We knew of these programs when one of our team leaders was able to experience one from the perspective of a patient’s support person. The patient was able to keep from experiencing the physical and mental decline that is often the result of a hospitalization for an older adult.

Hurley’s program mobilizes adults age 55 and older while they are hospital inpatients. All patients are at risk of decline and deconditioning while hospitalized and adults in the geriatric category are at a much higher risk than younger patients. When we become ill and require hospitalization, we interrupt our normal moving around. Moving around in the course of our lives keeps our bodies ready for more movement and keeps us in a baseline state of health. When we stop moving, even for a short time, our bodies become weaker and our health declines. This program offers baseline mobility to people 55 and older if they are able to participate. Usually this is taking a walk or ambulation. It can also be getting up into a chair, standing exercises next to the bed, chair exercises or bed exercises.

The program primarily involves doing baseline mobility with any of our geriatric patients that are able to participate twice per day. It includes roaming the hospital, meeting patients and families, talking with them and making them comfortable and doing ambulation or other mobility with them. It is a fastpaced job, constantly roving the floors and making sure everyone is seen twice each day. There is a quick

documentation and a leave-behind for the patient and families explaining the program. The benefits of the program for our patients are lots of cheer, improved spirit and returning home instead of somewhere else whenever possible.

Our Ambulation Team (A-Team) is helping people with normal, everyday mobility. We knew that, if we were going to start asking people to take regular walks in a hospital, we needed to make sure they had very nice people to do that with. Our team was created with the experience of the patient in mind. We looked for team members who would bring good, positive energy to work every day, who would be kind to our patients and who would make it easy to say yes to taking a walk with. The team members we are working with, Amaya Campbell, Jabari Brown and Densell Handley are exactly the kind of people who fit this description.

Between them, they have experience taking care of older family members, working with mentallychallenged individuals and personal training.

Our team is making impactful connections with patients every day. Visitation through Covid has been challenging and our patients are getting a meaningful connection with an A-Team member twice a day.

We have had many patients request that we come back more than the twice per day. We have had a patient ask for our team to come say goodbye as he went home with hospice care. The impact of kind interactions is incredible. The goal of our program is to improve the quality of care and reduce the length of stay for older adult patients by creating great mobility interactions for them that they will tell their friends and families about.

At Hurley Medical Center we are getting creative and finding any way we can to put mobility on everyone’s agenda!

Hurley hosted a “live” virtual Hurley Healthy Living event on Reproductive Health on Monday, April 12, on Facebook, YouTube and hurleymc.com. Viewers tuned in for a live discussion with presenters: Dr. Mostafa Abuzeid, Dr. Omari Young and Midwife Jennifer Brown. Dr. Abuzeid presented new hope for miscarriages, Dr. Young presented mid-life reproductive health to menopause and Ms. Brown on preteen to reproductive years. The event was well received by both presenters and participants with great participation during the question and answer portion of the event.

Their findings reveal that the standard method for identifying uterine anomalies that cause multiple miscarriages has actually allowed more subtle abnormalities to evade detection. As Dr. Abuzeid explains, “The data suggest that 3D ultrasound, which is believed by almost everybody to be state of the art and the gold standard to make this diagnosis, actually underestimates lesions and, in turn, is not as much of a gold standard as everybody thinks. It’s not as sensitive and can miss a lot of pathology.”

Miscarriages are heartbreaking experiences that affect about 10–15% of couples trying to have a baby. Although many go on to grow their family, approximately 1% of couples suffer multiple consecutive pregnancy losses. That number, however, can increase to 1 in 4, or 25%, at age 40.

Instead of relying solely on transvaginal 3D ultrasound, he says, a technique called diagnostic hysteroscopy can provide a more accurate picture and better measurements when nothing is found via ultrasound. Thanks to diagnostic hysteroscopy, the unexplained is explained, illuminating the problem to be fixed so couples can reach their dreams of parenthood.

Identifying the reason behind these recurrent miscarriages is the key to successful, targeted treatment. Common causes include hormonal, anatomic and autoimmune anomalies, which often can be detected through blood tests, ultrasounds or x-rays with dye. Unfortunately, for about 40–50% of couples, doctors are unable to find any explanation for the miscarriages. pril is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Paint Our Town Blue is Genesee County's public awareness campaign promoting the prevention of child abuse and neglect in our community through education and increased attention to this epidemic.

This movement is a collaboration of Genesee County nonprofits, community partner, business and residents with an aim to raise attention to its prevalence and the long-term impacts it has on child development, as well as social and economic conditions in our whole community. Pinwheels are used as the symbol of the great childhoods that all children deserve and are placed by these community groups in front of their locations in hopes of making all aware of the issue of child abuse. Hurley is one of those community partners and each year in the month of April, we place pinwheels at the corner of Grand Traverse and Robert T. Longway Blvd., as well as along the drive to our main entrance.

Is it true that food has to taste BAD to be GOOD for you? Table salt is a common seasoning used to add flavor to foods but excess sodium can have detrimental effects on your health. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 recommend adults should limit sodium intake to 2,300 mg/ day. One teaspoon of salt has 2,325 mg of sodium, a slice of pepperoni pizza has 835 mg, a cup of chicken noodle soup has 680 mg and a turkey sandwich has 810 mg. Is it possible to limit sodium intake and still enjoy your food?

Ask any dietitian or chef and they will tell you, YES, absolutely! Healthy food can taste good with little effort and the right ingredients. A combination of spices can flavor foods with little or no added salt. Trying new recipes and flavor combinations can please your taste buds and produce the health outcomes you are looking for. Patients coming to the Hurley Food FARMacy are taught about reasonable levels of sodium intake and how to flavor food so the salt will not be missed. The challenge is spices used to flavor food can be very expensive.

WELLNESS TEAM SPICE COLLECTION CHALLENGE “SPICE IT UP” Every challenge has a solution. The Hurley Wellness team came up with the idea of a spice collection challenge called "Spice It Up," targeted towards Wellness Champions in an effort to find out which department was the spiciest. All spices collected would be donated to the Food FARMacy for Hurley’s food insecure patients. The prize was the coveted “Pepper Trophy” and bragging rights as the “Spiciest Department." The challenge lasted the entire month of March and was timed appropriately as March is National Nutrition Month. The competition was fierce! The spices arrived in the departments by the dozens. 1,439 total bottles of spices were collected among 13 participating Wellness Champions! The IT department cheered on by Wellness Champion Nick

Lecea took first place and the coveted trophy with 400 bottles. Human Resources came in second at the urging of Jamal Dozier with 358 bottles. But the real winners are the patients who come to the Food FARMacy and have the opportunity to take home a different spice at each visit.

Phillip and Margaret Isham pictured here were one of the first families who picked up donated spices at the FARMacy. Recipes for spice blends using spices available at the FARMacy are given to patients to create at home. Each week a different healthy meal kit is featured using a variety of spices instead of using table salt. Patients are given the recipe and all the ingredients including spices to make the food at home. On the following visit, patients provide feedback on the flavor and ease of preparation of the recipes and earn prizes for completing recipe evaluations.

Advice for others, Cass suggests, “Get motivated. This can be done by participating in a wellness competition. I like to compete, and it seems that a lot of other folks do too. This not only motivates me but it encourages other people to move along in the same direction. I get motivated through others; seeing others participate.” Cass provides an example of that inspiration. “Our Payroll Supervisor, Jamie, is now our squat leader. I do not believe that initially she enjoyed or was capable of this role but now she embraces it and is a motivator to others. This inspires me when someone does something that they never thought they could.”

In recognition of his dedication to wellness, Cass received a Wellness medal, day off with pay, Hurley Wellness jacket, 6-month membership to the YMCA and a $20 Gift Card from the Farmers' Market.

For many of us, our life is spent indoors. Americans spend nearly 90% of their time indoors; at work, home, and commuting. Screen time has reached an all time high, especially during the pandemic.

Michigan is blessed with beautiful seasons, but only a short window of warm weather. May is the perfect time to swap some indoor hours for outdoor ones.

Besides enjoying the benefits of fresh air, outdoor time is typically spent being active. Gardening has more benefits than just consuming the fresh fruits and vegetables at harvest.

Planting and tending to a garden provides us with a whole season worth of physical activity. Genesee County is home to one of the largest park systems in the state of Michigan. You have 11,000 acres of county parks to roam, explore, • and play. Additionally, there are tons of city parks and trails, many potentially • right in your neighborhood.
