hurley diversity & inclusion council

meet our In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board. Given that many of our Board members have served multiple five-year terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter. Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. Leading the meetings to ensure the extensive oversight responsibilities are met is the Board Chair. Our current Chair of the Board of Managers is Frances Gilcreast. Other members of the board include: Philip Shaltz and Charlotte Edwards.

PHILIP S H A LT Z has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2008. He is the President of Shaltz Automation, as well as President-Founder of ValuePoint, LLC and a managing partner of Uptown Six, LLC and Uptown Developments LLC. Mr. Shaltz is also a member of the Hurley Foundation Board. He received a BS Degree in Packaging from Michigan State University in 1970 and is involved in a number of community activities, serving on several Boards, and is the founder of the Flint Diaper Bank and the Blueberry Ambassadors Program that encourages local school aged children to perform at least three random acts of kindness and then write about their experience to inspire others to also pay it forward. In 2011, Mr. Shaltz received the Distinguished Alumni Award of Mott Community College. Mr. Shaltz currently serves on the Community

Board for Huntington Bank, as well as the United Way of Genesee County Board. Mr. Shaltz served as the Board of Managers Vice Chair from 2011-2012, Chair from 20132014 and Board Treasurer from 2019-2020. In October of this year, he was elected Board Vice Chair. Mr. Shaltz has been married to his wife, Ardele, for 50 years and has two children, Carrie and Jason. When asked about his service on the Board of Managers, Mr. Shaltz stated, “It is an honor and privilege to serve with my fellow Board members and represent the great institution of Hurley Medical Center within the Flint community.” He further stated he does want Hurley staff and physicians to know that he and the rest of the Board of Managers do very much appreciate the hard-working men and women of the hospital who have persevered and continued caring for the members of our community during this unprecedented pandemic. Their commitment and loyalty has not gone unnoticed.

CHARLOTTE EDWARDS has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2002. Ms. Edwards holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. In 1997, Ms. Edwards earned a Certificate in Community & Economic Development from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. In 2013, Ms. Edwards received the Community Spirit Award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis for her outstanding dedication to affordable housing and community economic development. Prior to her retirement, Ms. Edwards held the position of Vice President & Community Development Officer with Citizens Bank in Flint. Ms. Edwards is

a passionate volunteer for communityfocused activities. She serves on the boards of the Community Capital Development Corporation, the Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute and is a Local Advisory Committee Member for LISC Flint (Local Initiatives Support Corporation). Ms. Edwards did serve as the Board of Managers Vice Chair from 2010-2011, as Board Chair from 20122013, and as Board Secretary from 20192020. In October of 2020, she was elected Treasurer of the Board of Managers. When asked to comment on her service as a Board member, Ms. Edwards stated “Hurley is a most valuable asset of our community from both a health and economic perspective, I am honored and privileged to serve as a member of the Board of Hospital Managers.”

aring for some of the sickest COVID-19 patients and stepping up to fill in for loved ones who cannot visit, Danielle Middleton, BSN, RN, our December Employee of the Month, is a true hero. Normally Danielle and her team provide care in the Intermediate Critical Care Unit (ICCU), but after the pandemic hit, their unit seamlessly switched to caring for critical COVID patients in what could be described as a COVID ICU. Despite the demands of her job, Danielle considers it an honor to care for her patients. She describes being able to help patients, as well as their families, when they are most vulnerable as the best part of her job. Her superior compassion is always felt, something her patients treasure, especially now. “Family and loved ones can’t see them now, so we really have to become the patients’ family—we hold their hands and comfort them,” shares Danielle. “Just being able to comfort them when loved ones can’t be there, it’s a privilege for me.”

to. “The people I work with, I couldn’t do this without them,” Danielle says. “We’re very close. We cry on each other’s shoulders and we may yell, but we’ve really come together as a team.” “Danielle embodies the spirit of teamwork and is consistently found to be helping others on the unit,” boasts Michele Gilmore, MSN, RN, Nurse Manager, ICCU & PCU. “Danielle has also been a great mentor for our newly hired staff and creates a supportive learning environment for them. Danielle is one of the most compassionate, patient and kind RNs that I have worked with. Her dedication to the unit, staff, patients and Hurley goes above and beyond.”

"Danielle embodies the spirit of teamwork and is consistently found to be helping others on the unit."

Danielle has a breadth of experience. Prior to her nursing career, she served eight years in the U.S. Air Force Security Forces. Afterward, she moved to Michigan to be close to her husband’s family and earned her BSN at UofM-Flint. It was then that Danielle was drawn to Hurley. “I did most of my clinicals at Hurley and just fell in love with the atmosphere,” recalls Danielle. “I did some clinicals at other places, but I just fell in love with the patient population here.” In May, Danielle will have been with our ICCU for three years. She values how her coworkers find ways to lighten the mood. For example, when a physician’s assistant was ecstatic to get a label maker, the group used it to label everyday items in her office. Then, in the early days of the pandemic, someone taped a little area by the nurses’ station and declared it the dancing square, where anyone could stand and just dance if they needed

Working in a high-stress environment, Danielle knows the importance of taking time to relax. She decompresses by reading, taking warm baths, spending time with her husband and son, watching movies and going for walks. She also enjoys working on home improvement projects, like refinishing furniture. Danielle deeply appreciates her support system. In addition to her husband and son, Danielle can always count on her extended family to be there for her, whether it be in the form of flowers from her in-laws or a call or text from her mom and sister. Danielle received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Danielle!

giving spirit in Pediatrics nets $1000 donation to food bank

Mouzon, a third-year Peds resident, said this was the first of two Hurley Pediatrics Program "community wellness" events planned for the year. After the COVID-19 pandemic nixed her in-person event ideas, she was initially stumped on how to find something "meaningful and fun, ... something that all the residents could work together on and enjoy," she said.

Mouzon, who is heading to Orlando, Fla., for a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship after she graduates in 2021, learned a lot about the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan while organizing the food drive. "I was amazed at how big this organization was and the vast amount of community connections they have created all around the Flint community and beyond. Schools, community organizations, shelters, churches, etc. I believed that the money we would raise would go a long way to help many people in the surrounding communities," she said. "I just want to encourage everyone to become involved in community service," she said. "Do not think you don’t have an impact in this world because you do. And as you are pouring into other people, you start to realize you are filling your cup too. It’s the most rewarding feeling and a way to stay connected to those around you during this uncertain time."

"I was feeling detached from my family, friends, and community," she recalled. "One day, I was watching the news and saw how many people in the community were relying on food banks to provide meals for their families. Hundreds of cars lining up daily at community centers and churches to receive food. There was a huge need in the community at this moment in time. And I thought there is no better way to feel connected to one another than to give back to this amazing Flint community and work together doing community service. That is how the donation drive was born." Mouzon, whose role as Peds wellness chief means she conducts lots of wellness activities throughout the year, said she didn't know what to expect with this event at first. "This was my first time creating a donation drive, and it was all new to me," she said. "It was a wonderful learning experience. ... I received amazing feedback from residents, faculty, friends, and family. As the word spread, more and more people ... wanted to donate, even from other departments in the hospital. I believe it made them feel good to give back in this way, especially heading into the holiday season." Mouzon said she had no idea on how to set a goal amount to raise - she just didn't know what to expect. "I would get excited just seeing $5 or $ 10 in the donation drop boxes because I knew that just $1 would provide 6 meals for a family, and if I could just make sure 6 people did not go hungry for a night, then it was a job well done. It makes me so happy to know that we raised $1000. I'm just so proud of everyone for opening up their hearts for this great cause," she said. From left: Cathy Blankenship, VP of Communication and Development at the Food Bank for Eastern Michigan, Auriel Mouzon, MD (Hurley Pediatric Residency Wellness Chief), Dr. Crystal Cederna-Meko (Associate Program Director), and Igbagbosanmi Oredein MD (first year pediatric resident).

HEALTHY LIVING SERIES

Hurley hosted a “Live” Virtual Hurley Healthy Living event on Maintaining Your Mental Health on Friday, December 18, 2020, on Facebook, YouTube and hurleymc.com. Viewers tuned in for a live discussion with Hurley Mental Health experts Recco Richardson, Ph.D., MA, LPC and Sharonda Taylor, MA, LLP about maintaining good mental health during the holidays and a global pandemic. The event was well received by both speakers and the community. There was great participation with a number of pertinent questions by the participants for both speakers. Paying attention to how we feel is the first step. According to Recco Santee Richardson, PhD, LPC, Clinical Therapist, of Hurley Mental Health Associates, with all the holiday commotions and the pandemic, it’s easy to be caught off guard if we become anxious, upset or worried. “We need to be mindful of how we’re feeling and have a plan for if we do start to have such feelings. We need to be aware of any subtle or sudden changes in our moods or behaviors,” he explains. That plan he’s referencing is a plan to take care of ourselves. It could involve getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, getting fresh air or just taking time to enjoy the moment. “The things that bring a smile to our faces or make us relax, we have to make sure we do those,” Recco says. He encourages everyone to make time for activities that bring them pleasure and joy, whether it’s reading, crocheting, watching movies or writing. Many are finding themselves depressed due to the holidays and COVID-19. Rico stressed the importance of staying busy and taking this time to plan for something next year, as soon as it’s possible. In the meantime, use phone calls and virtual gatherings to stay connected. It’s also a great time to pull out those memory books. If you do feel sad, embrace it. “Let it run its course—it’s an important feeling. Depression is the accumulation of sad experiences that were not processed adequately,” Recco warns. Since the holidays can be extra hard on children ages 8 to 12—more so than for teens, Recco recommends listening to how those children feel and trying to accommodate them as much as possible. The elderly, who often view family as a lifeline, also may find their mental wellness hit especially hard by the physical distancing required by COVID-19. To counteract that, Recco encourages family and friends to send cards and make frequent phone calls to help their loved ones maintain that human connection. Being kind to ourselves is crucial. Recco urges us to not feel shame or guilt if we can’t buy everything our families deserve and to not get upset if someone can’t get time off work. “Do not feel bad about what you can’t do or where you can’t be in person,” Recco stresses. “That’s nothing to feel guilty about. That’s where we get holiday depression.”

Thank you to all the Hurley employees who celebrated the spirit of the season by donating well over 600 pairs of shoes to local kids through the Shoes That Fit program. For some kids, this may be the only pair of shoes they receive all year long. Everyone did a great job pulling together to show kids of the Flint Community School District how much we care. This project also gives them the dignity that comes with having a brand-new pair of shoes. The elementary students are always appreciative of these generous gifts and on Thursday, December 17, when the Marketing Team, Laura Jasso, Doug Pike and Jeremy Eads along with Hurley Volunteer Brenden McConiha delivered the shoes to Doyle-Ryder, Durant-Tuuri-Mott (DTM) and Neithercut Elementary, that appreciation was expressed by each school’s representative. This collective act of kindness proves that the adjective “generous” fits our Hurley Family to a "T!"

To get started, visit the home page of the Hurley Intranet and click on the Virtual Urgent Care link: https://portal.mendfamily. com/signup/new-patient/954 or call 810-262-2710.

A special thank you to all who donated to the 2020 Coats for Kids program. Your support means so much to the children and families of Genesee County. We collected over 300 coats of new and gently used coats, almost doubling the total from last year where we collected over 160. The coats were picked up the second week of December by Troy Cleaners. Coats are boxed separating new and used and the gently used dry cleaned. Troy Cleaners delivers all the coats--both used (that have been dry cleaned) and new to the Salvation Army. The coats are distributed to families living in Genesee County. Through the generous donations of the Hurley Family, we have been able to assist in helping to keep Genesee County children warm. All of you here at Hurley truly make the difference!
