DEAF U follows a group of students attending Gallaudet University, a private college catering to the deaf and hard of hearing. For DiMarco, the goal of the series is to show deaf people as humans, from all walks of life. Streaming on Netflix.
This short 40 minutes documentary focuses on a deaf football player at Maryland School for the Deaf. It shows clips of his life as an athlete, a friend who lost someone to suicide and being a teenager. It also interviewed some other deaf people. The documentary captured a lot of moments showing what it feel like to be immersed in the deaf world.
Before becoming the actor, producer, advocate, and model that people know today, Nyle DiMarco was half of a pair of Deaf twins born to a multi-generational Deaf family in Queens, New York. At the hospital one day after he was born, Nyle “failed” his first test—a hearing test—to the joy and excitement of his parents.
Silence Between Us Fiction fans will find it hard to put down The Silence Between Us—a YA novel that doesn’t shy away from real-life issues including the challenges faced by those in the Deaf culture, relationship struggles, communication problems, and complicated families.

Flint Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Thera Sorority Inc. hold basic needs fair
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and each year local program partners join together to raise awareness. These prevention partners include Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Flint, Ennis Center for Children, Hurley Children’s Hospital, Voices for Children, and Whaley Children’s Center.
Activities included a rally at the downtown Genesee County Sheriff’s office on April 6 featuring remarks by Sheriff Swanson, Wear Blue Day on April 14, Prevention Partner t-shirt sales, and planting pinwheel gardens.
During April, and throughout the year, the prevention partners encourage all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Genesee County a better place for children and families. By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help promote the social and emotional well-being of children and youth and prevent child maltreatment within families and communities.
Protective factors are the strengths and resources families draw on during difficult times to shield them from life's stresses. Research
shows that when parents possess protective factors, the risk for neglect and abuse diminish and optimal outcomes for children, youth, and families are promoted. Major protective factors include knowledge of parenting, knowledge of child development, parental resilience, social connections, and concrete supports.
"Voices for Children is grateful for the opportunity created by Paint Our Town Blue (POTB) and our partners who help raise awareness of the need for Child Abuse Prevention during April, and throughout the year,” said Claudnyse Holloman, President and CEO of Voices for Children.
“Voices for Children, as Genesee County's only accredited child advocacy center serves thousands of child survivors of abuse, neglect, and human trafficking every year. We are fortunate to partner with other child-serving organizations, like our POTB partners, to serve children and families,” she added.
In support of these efforts, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Children's Bureau, Office on Child Abuse and Neglect, together with Child Welfare Information Gateway, and the FRIENDS National Resource Center for Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention developed the 2023/2024 Prevention Resource Guide. The guide provides more information about protective factors and highlights examples of innovative prevention approaches being implemented by communities across the country.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Flint: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
Ennis Center for Children: With the support of the community, we preserve families when possible and create new families when necessary. This mission drives our trained, dedicated and compassionate staff as they guide children and families toward a future better than their past.
Hurley Children’s Hospital: Child abuse and neglect are serious problems in our community, and we are committed to stopping these potentially fatal events. The most important action is to identify these cases and intervene as quickly as possible so that the abusive cycle can be stopped. Our Children’s Hospital has on staff one of only six board certified child abuse specialists in Michigan.
Voices for Children Advocacy Center: We are dedicated to serving child survivors of abuse, and their families, in Genesee and Shiawassee Counties and enhancing the lives of all children through treatment, education, and by increasing community awareness.
Whaley Children’s Center: Through dynamic leadership and dedicated staff and volunteers, Whaley Children's Center will be a source of hope, care, and treatment to Michigan's abused, neglected, and at-risk children and families.

CONGRATULATIONS! You lost a substantial amount of weight. But now your skin lacks the elasticity to conform to your new body size. It is time to consider surgical body contouring at Hurley Medical Center.
Surgical body contouring removes excess sagging skin and fat and improves the shape of the underlying support tissue.
Body contouring procedures may include arm lift, breast lift, facelift, lower body lifts, medial thigh lift or a tummy tuck. The result is a better-proportioned appearance with smoother contours.
Dr. Ihab Saab is a double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Hurley Medical Center. He offers a wide range of body contouring surgeries and specializes in innovative microsurgical reconstructive techniques.
If you are interested in learning more about surgical body contouring, register for this free virtual event. Dr. Saab will explain body contouring, and answer your questions live.
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Saab finished his medical school training at the American University of Beirut and completed his General Surgery residency and Plastic Surgery fellowship training at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan. He is passionate about surgical education and he is a clinical instructor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University.
After noticing 37 employees were called out for exceptional patient/customer service in January reviews, Hurley’s Employee Engagement decided to thank these stellar staffers in a unique way. After lots of brainstorming they launched an internal “Thanks a Lotto” campaign to reward staff members who are specifically named in a positive Press Ganey patient survey or an online Google review. All 37 employees received thank you cards that contained a $1 Michigan instant lottery ticket. If an employee was named twice in separate reviews, they received two lottery tickets. The hopes were high that someone would scratch off a BIG winner! Prizes include a chance to win $2, $5, $10, $20, $30, $40, $100, $200 or $5,000.
In February and March there were more cards sent out. 84 to be exact. Cards went to various departments including the Emergency Department, Mother/Baby, PEDS, PICU, NICU, CCU, Neuro Trauma, 5East, 7East, 9East, OB/ GYN Clinic and Wound Care Clinic. Employee Engagement asked Managers to make a big deal about the cards, as they wanted staff to be celebrated and the overall feedback from Managers has been wonderful.
Mike McCartney and Genny Cunningham from the Emergency Department said, “Giving staff extra recognition is great and it’s a nice reminder that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Now they have a chance to win a little cash which is much appreciated. Although we’ve only had a few small winners, the anticipation is high that someone will soon hit for big money!”
Korey Jackson from the Mother/Baby unit said, “The employee receiving the card and lottery ticket is uplifted and the others on the team are cheering them on to win! The excitement is contagious.”
Chris Norris from PEDS let us know they’ve had a $5 winner and lots of cheering in hopes for a big win. She said, “The smiles when handing out the cards say it all.”
Press Ganey surveys determine HCAHPS Scores. The scores play a pivotal part in hospital reimbursement through the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program. The higher a hospital’s HCAHPS scores, the higher their reimbursements will be, and vice versa. As a result, low HCAHPS scores impact a hospital’s bottom line in two ways: by hindering their reputation among consumers and limiting the amount of funding they receive from Medicare.
Google star ratings have shown that hospitals that held better ratings and reviews tend to have higher annual revenue. On average, top performers had revenue that was about $1.2 million more than the bottom 25 percent. These findings come as more patients are accessing online reviews to make healthcare decisions. A 2022 survey from Software Advice revealed that 82 percent of patients use online reviews to make a decision about where to access healthcare. Negative Google reviews serve as a deterrent for many patients, regardless of a referral from their primary care physician.
All the employees named in these positive reviews understand that how they speak to their patients can sometimes be more important than what they say. Their kind and caring approach allows them to connect on an emotional level. Not only does this help them understand their patients better, the patient experience is immediately elevated.
Listed are the employees that were specifically named in a Press Ganey survey or an online Google review January 1, 2023 - March 31, 2023. If you wish to add your name to this growing list, keep the patient experience as your top priority no matter what your role is here at Hurley. If someone thanks you for your service, don’t hesitate to ask them for a positive review. Not all patients receive a Press Ganey survey, but all of them can leave a five-star Google review with your name attached. Who knows, you might win the $5,000 jackpot!

This month’s DAISY Award Honoree is Kellie Clark, BSN, RN. The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion a nurse shows to her patients and their families.
Kellie has been with Hurley Medical Center for three years, all of which have been with the team on 9E. Beyond greeting the patients and the typical patient care, Kellie says she tries to be like a hostess, making the patients’ (and their families) stays as comfortable as she can. She attributes the support of the staff on 9E to helping achieve these goals. She explains, “I work with a great group, everybody is like a team player.”
Nursing was not Kellie’s first career – she started out doing shop work, then decided she needed more for her life. Seeking something purposeful, Kellie went back to school to become a surgical technician. After working in that field, she then realized that she wanted even more patient interaction than that role provided, and that is when she went back to school to become a nurse. The calling also runs in her family, having several cousins who work in the field, with a couple of them even having worked at Hurley previously.
Her genuine interest in interacting with people is reflected in the feedback received from patients, with one describing her as “always pleasant and just a joy to have around.” Other praise Kellie receives centers around how thorough she is – checking in at the end of shifts to see if patients need anything before she goes home, and going out of her way to help others. One particularly memorable line from Kellie’s DAISY Award nomination says, “I am 88-years-old and have had a lot of nurses in my life and can honestly say she’s the best one I’ve ever had.” Feedback like this validates the career change Kellie made, with her explaining, “Acknowledging how they were treated makes it worth it. When someone thanks you, it means a lot.”
In her free time Kellie describes herself as an avid sports person, both going to sporting events and playing them. At her athletic club she plays pickleball, tennis, racquetball, and basketball. While it may seem like Kellie is always on the go, she does say she enjoys lounging around and watching TV. She is also a movie person, opting for a good action, thriller, or suspense flick when she can.
Have you witnessed an extraordinary registered nurse in action? Nominate an exceptional RN for the DAISY Award. Nomination forms are available in the Cafeteria, 8W Nursing Office and on the Hurley intranet.

Here's a visual guide to help you make healthy choices all year long.
March
World Sleep Day was March 17. Did you know that only 1 in 3 Americans get enough sleep on a regular basis? Sleep needs can vary from person to person. But most adults should get seven to nine hours per night. Sleep is essential to health - just as important as nutrition and physical activity!
• It helps support memory and learning
• Clears waste from the brain and promotes brain health
• Supports immune health
Poor sleep (and lack of sleep) is linked to obesity, diabetes, coronary artery disease, reduced immunity, reduced reaction time, impaired judgement, and cognitive impairment similar in effect to alcohol intoxication. Certain sleep disorders like Sleep Apnea are associated with dementia, risk of seizures, and increased risk of stroke.
1. Limit screen time before bed. The artificial light from phones and laptops decreases melatonin production which is a chemical your body makes that helps you sleep. Using devices before bed can throw off that process.
2. Make your bedroom cool, dark and quiet. The ideal temperature for sleeping is around 65 to 68 degrees. Close the blinds and use earplugs or a white noise app on your phone if sounds tend to wake you up.
3. Limit alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime. Both can disrupt your natural sleep phases.
4. Skip big meals at night. That can also mess with your sleep phases and cause heartburn that can keep you up.
5. Stick to a sleep schedule. Commit to going to bed and waking up around the same time (even on weekends). It regulates your body’s internal clock and makes it easier for you to fall asleep and wake up.
6. Exercise. Regular activity can prep your body for a good night’s sleep.
7. Reduce stress. It’s one of the biggest sleep disruptors.
“We volunteer because of our faith. We love God and we feel what we do is a calling.”
- Kelsay and Kim Mannor
Kelsay and Kim Mannor, the Volunteers of the Month for February, started volunteering at Hurley in 2002. In that time they have been involved in many roles, including bake sales, walk-athons, bowlathons, working in the NICU and even bringing their therapy dog Charlie to the hospital to visit pediatric patients. In September 2005, Kim and Kelsay became regular volunteers on Popcorn Thursdays in the West Lobby. Then, COVID hit. In June 2020, they started making the large Miracle Pop bags of popcorn in the School of Nursing building. “Kelsay and I enjoy volunteering for CMN,” Kim said. “Knowing that every bag of Miracle Pop that’s sold helps the kids makes us happy.” In 2022, $16,574 was raised between Miracle Pop that’s sold in the Lobby Shop and Popcorn Thursdays in the West Lobby.
The Mannor family’s relationship with Hurley began when Kelsay and her triplet sisters, Kerrie and Kara, were born here and spent time in the NICU. So, it comes as no surprise that Kim and Kelsay enjoy volunteering in the NICU as cuddlers.
Over the years, their dedication to Hurley has only grown. As Kim explains, “Hurley is family. Our life is so tied to Hurley now, and the people we meet here. It’s just this beautiful fabric of life and opportunities to help someone. We couldn’t imagine not being a part of Hurley. We love Hurley and look forward to giving back. It means the world to us. We encourage anyone who’s interested to reach out and become a Hurley volunteer.”
When they’re not giving their time to helping people at Hurley, Kim and Kelsay can be found volunteering at their churches. Kelsay goes to Journey Ministries, where they help in the nursery, and help with special occasions like stuffing Easter eggs. In the past they were involved in two Presbyterian churches, where they visited the elderly, mailed cards, and did phone trees for special prayers. They also spent ten years volunteering in a 4th grade classroom, where Charlie got to visit the kids too. Kim says, “We volunteer because of our faith. We love God and we feel what we do is a calling.”
When not volunteering, family is a focus. Kim says, “We love to spend time with our family, especially Kerrie and Joe in Grand Rapids, and Kara in Ann Arbor. We love traveling to Traverse City every summer to visit our Aunt Alice and let Charlie, our therapy dog, swim at the beach. We love to bake cookies, take long walks, and eat out. Black Rock and Sagebrush Cantina are our favorites.”
