Lawrence’s favorite pastimes are bowling, roller skating and shooting pool. He has bowled

in leagues just about everywhere in the area, including Galaxy Lanes and B’s Bowling Center.

His roller skating time was split between Skateland and Rollhaven. He used to have his own pool table but now finds himself playing at all kinds of different places. Both his kids have grown up now and both live in Florida.

Lawrence extended his appreciation for being nominated for Employee of the Month. He is so grateful and appreciative. He was extremely surprised. He noted his appreciation for all the wonderful gifts and is excited to wear his jacket.

He truly appreciates his coworkers and his supervisor, Mike Wilson. Lawrence noted, “I am so grateful to work with such amazing people.

My boss is wonderful. He is very encouraging and always shares how much he appreciates the work I do.”

Tabatha explained how important it is to always try to be helpful. She expressed that for her, it is her way of giving back. She embodies the concept of teamwork. She is always trying to pitch in wherever she can. She believes, “That is what nursing is all about, helping your fellow nurse with their patient. If you are able and can assist, lend a hand. It is a life lesson. It makes your team stronger.” She shared how appreciative she is to the team of 9East, noting that they display perseverance every single day. They help each other with difficult tasks and even small things, making certain that everyone takes a lunch break or bringing in and sharing snacks. They remind each other that today is a bad day but tomorrow is going to be better. Tabatha notes, “It is tough in nursing right now but somebody is always trying to be that positive person, who shines through, who gives that extra motivation to keep going.”

Tabatha was totally shocked to receive the Daisy Award. She expressed her appreciation with receiving the award and acknowledged how grateful she is to her team on 9East. She thanked her family. She has two daughters and she said, “They always understand when I’ve had a rough day and know when I need a hug.” She acknowledged husband, John, who she credits as an amazing man and is very supportive at home, of her job or just supportive with any venture she may endeavor.

closing the loop on breast cancer LEARNING ABOUT RECONSTRUCTION OPTIONS

On October 28, Dr. Saab presented “Closing the Loop on Breast Cancer” for Hurley’s Healthy Living Series. His presentation covered options for breast reconstruction surgeries, and afterward, he answered questions from viewers.

Breast Reconstruction Candidates Women who have had surgery, such as a mastectomy due to breast cancer, are candidates to undergo breast cancer reconstruction, or surgery to replace and/or reshape the breast. Breast reconstruction can help patients who have had their entire breast removed due to cancer or those who have had part of their breast with cancer removed and are left with significant asymmetry in their breasts.

Breast Reconstruction Options Implants Implants themselves have two options. First is a single stage treatment where the patient immediately receives an implant. The second is where the tissue is expanded using varying sizes of implants and when the desired size is reached, the patient receives a final implant.

Autologous Reconstruction Autologous reconstruction has three options. First is the Latissimus Dorsi Flap that uses a patient’s own muscle, fat and skin from the back to reconstruct the breast. This route frequently requires an implant underneath the tissue for volume. Second is the tram TRAM Flap, a reconstructive process that uses a patient’s lower stomach skin and excess fat to form and shape a new breast, but without sacrificing the stomach abdominal muscles. Lastly, the DIEP, or Free Flap, option uses the excess skin and fat from the patient’s lower abdomen, buttock, or inner thigh to shape and form a new breast without sacrificing the muscles.

Oncoplastic Breast Reduction If only the cancerous part of the breasts have been removed, and enough tissue still remains, an Oncoplastic Breast Reduction uses the remaining tissue to shape the breasts. Healthy Living

Question and Answer Segment Recovery Time The question and answer portion of Dr. Saab’s presentation addressed questions and concerns that patients may have when faced with breast cancer. Recovery normally takes a year from initial reconstruction to final results. Also important to note is that implants have shelf life, like joint replacements.

Tissue replacement options are a bigger investment upfront, because it's a larger surgery, but the dividends are greater because once the tissue survives it will always be there.

Reconstruction and Risk of Cancer Returning: In response to another question, Dr. Saab explained that reconstruction itself does not increase or change the risk of getting cancer again. However, implant-based reconstruction is associated with a very rare form of lymphoma. This risk is specifically associated with a particular kind of implant. That said, radiologists today are very skilled at reading mammograms and MRIs and, with the current state of radiologic technology, data shows these surgeries don’t impact the detection of cancer.

Physical Effects of Reconstructive Surgery Other questions focused on the physical effects of reconstructive surgery. Regarding scarring, there will be a scar at the site of tissue removal if autologous options are pursued, and recovery is longer for patients using their own tissue compared to implants.

Contralateral surgery is used to retain symmetry during reconstructions. Dr. Saab also explained that when there is a mastectomy, the nerves that supply sensation to the nipple are removed. Around a year out of surgery, patients might feel some sort of a sensation but it never recovers fully.

Effects of Chemo and Radiation Finally, it’s important to note that if there are complications in the reconstruction, chemo or radiation might need to be held off to allow for healing, or reconstruction may need to wait until after chemo and radiation treatments are completed.

Dr. Saab is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with special interests in breast reconstruction, trauma reconstruction, hand surgery, lymphatic surgery and cosmetic surgery. He is board certified in general surgery, and completed his general and plastic surgery training at Henry Ford Health System.

Hurley’s Diabetes Center is “Here for You” Did you know that the Hurley Diabetes Center Adult Education Program had approximately 800 referrals last year? Of those referrals, 51% were 45-64 years old, 37% were >65 and 12% were 19-44. Yes, young people can get type 2 diabetes! The average A1c of those who started the program was 9.34. The average upon completion was 7.57, an average decrease of 1.77. This is better than most medicines! 15% of these patients had an A1c of less than 7 upon completion of the class.

Pediatric Diabetes Education Program Hurley’s Pediatric Diabetes Education Program is the only diabetes pediatric education and management program of its kind in Genesee County. We assist children with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes. We work with children and their parents to help them cope with diabetes and stay healthy as they grow. We also visit schools to teach students and school staff about diabetes.

Extra Life Game Day Raises Money for Hurley Kids On Saturday, November 6, more than 120 gamers from around the country came together to raise over $30,000 for Hurley Children’s Hospital during Extra Life Game Day. Included in the lineup of this year's gamers were two of Hurley's own IT team members: John Keane and Nathan Erinjeri, whose team "Gaming for Growth," raised more than $2,500.

Since its inception in 2008, the Extra Life program has united participants nationwide to play their favorite games, while raising money for sick and injured children treated at their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

Local gaming efforts continued into the end of the month as nearly 40 members of Kettering University’s varsity ESports team committed to 24 hours of gaming to raise money for Hurley kids.

We are in awe of efforts made by our gaming community this year, and we can't wait to see what the future of the Extra Life program has in store.

Costco - Midland Celebrates One Year Anniversary Congratulations to our friends at Costco in Midland who celebrated their first anniversary on Friday, November 12.

From embarking on their inaugural Children's Miracle Network campaign this past spring, to celebrate a very special birthday with our 2021 CMN Champion, Lydia, it sure has been a memorable year. We are so grateful to have the Midland Costco team as part of our Hurley CMN family, and we are excited to celebrate many anniversaries to come!

Grant Received for Phototherapy Lights The Hurley Foundation received a $25,000 grant from the A.G. Bishop Charitable Trust to purchase five LED phototherapy lights for Hurley’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Preterm babies commonly need treatment for jaundice, a yellowish discoloration of the skin and/or eyes. Jaundice is caused by an immature liver due to prematurity, infection, medications or blood disorders. Light therapy or phototherapy is an effective treatment for mild to severe cases. It lowers bilirubin, a substance that is produced naturally as red blood cells recycle. Because the baby's liver is not yet fully mature, he/she is unable to breakdown and eliminate bilirubin. It is dangerous if bilirubin levels get too high.

These new lights will provide coverage of the infant from head to toe, to optimize treatment so bilirubin levels are quickly and safely lowered.

There are a lot of people from different backgrounds.” “Volunteering gives you an inside look on how the hospital runs. I am hoping to see more of the inner workings of the hospital and get more hands on,” notes Ethan.

It is wonderful how these brothers have such a strong partnership. They support and help each other in all aspects. They also have a competitive side, where they actually like to compete against each other. Their future plans are to attend college at Michigan State University, pursuing a degree in the medical field. They haven’t decided

what exactly they are pursuing but are reviewing their options. When they are not attending school, doing homework, volunteering or working, they enjoy weight lifting at a local gym.

Gavin and Ethan extend their appreciation to their father for helping them obtain the opportunity of volunteering at Hurley. Both noted that they would recommend volunteering here to others. “It provides good experience and an opportunity to see what it is like to have a job. It is not stressful and is a good place to give your time as a volunteer.”

Many times when people think about volunteering with us, they think of clinical volunteer work, however we have so many opportunities beyond the patient floors that are mission critical, such as the lobby shop.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help you prevent a diabetes diagnosis or manage your diabetes. It may also improve your critical health numbers, including weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and blood cholesterol.

Risk Factors of diabetes:

Eating healthy Making healthy food choices, including controlling portion sizes and reading food labels, is key to maintaining the right weight and preventing or managing diabetes.

With prediabetes or diabetes, you have additional issues with food. For example, it’s important to limit simple carbohydrates that are in foods such as table sugar, cake, soda, candy and jellies. Consuming them can increase blood glucose.

Managing weight Being overweight or obese, makes it hard to manage Type 2 diabetes. It also increases the risk for high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death for people with diabetes. Two ways to help manage weight are to eat healthy and be more physically active. To lose weight, you must take in fewer calories than you use up through normal metabolism and physical activity.

Tips on how to manage your diabetes: You must understand diabetes before you are able to manage it for yourself. Help from a doctor or diabetes care team may be needed to make personalized meal plans. Medication can also be taken to help manage your diabetes. These medications can range from insulin to non-insulin type medications. Your diabetes can change over time so these medications may need to be monitored regularly. If you feel overwhelmed with managing your diabetes, know you are not alone and there is help out there.

Hurley faculty contribute to critical care psychology book One Hurley faculty member co-edited a newly published book about critical care psychology, while eight Hurley faculty members contributed to chapters in the book.

Kirk J. Stucky PsyD ABPP-CN,RP (bio), chair of the Department of Behavioral Health at Hurley Medical Center and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Michigan State University, co-edited Critical Care Psychology and Rehabilitation: Principles and Practice (Oxford University Press, Oxford, England) with Jennifer Stevenson Jutte.

He also co-authored the introduction and two chapters:

Mercer MD (bio), Valerie Canary MSN RN CPNP, and Michelle Maxson MSN, RN, ACCNS-AG. Dr. Meko is also program director of the Hurley Pediatric Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship, while Dr. Mercer is program director of the Hurley Trauma Research Fellowship and the Hurley Trauma Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Dennis and Dr. Ellens are key faculty in their programs, the Rehabilitation Psychology Fellowship and the Pediatric Psychology Fellowship/Pediatrics Residency, respectively.
