CORPORATE COMPLIANCE
Spring Cleaning: Refresh Policies and Procedures
There are warmer days now and so it should also start feeling like spring indoors as well, so how about checking to see if our written procedures need a refresher? Revisit the policies and procedures for the work you do to see how well they match with how you do your job today. If they do not match up, then notify your supervisor or manager to see if they should be updated. Most often, there are already changes in process but your input might make them more meaningful.
We have a Standard Practice on writing Standard Practices, and it starts off with: Hurley Medical Center will document pertinent policies and procedures (“Standard Practices” or “SP”) and facilitate a process to 1) make those Standard Practices available to those that need them and 2) periodically review and update those Standard Practices.
Please contact me if you have questions or suggestions of topics relating to the Compliance Program at Hurley you would like to be addressed.
Shellie Shue, Hurley’s Corporate Compliance Officer, can be reached at 810.262.9890 or sshue1@hurleymc.com

nursing awards 2024
Each year during Nursing Services Week, the Sue Wright Nursing Award is given to an exemplary employee to celebrate their outstanding level of patient care and dedication. This award was established in memory of Sue Wright, Hurley’s former Vice President of Nursing. This year's recipient was Michele Paulic, from the Neuro/Trauma/Surg/Burn (NTSB) unit.
Michele has been a nurse at Hurley for eleven years. She graduated from nursing school and immediately took a position at Hurley in PCU. Two years later she assumed a position in NTSB. This 18-bed unit tackles critical care patients and is a fast-paced environment which requires a great deal of teamwork to safely deliver the specialized care that the patients need.
Michele confirmed her team is collaborative and cohesive in providing the best patient care, which is essential for achieving goals. “Each day brings new challenges. We are able to meet these challenges because we have a great team. I chose the NTSB unit because everyone works well together. We support each other at all times. We are not only friends but are like family. Even on the hardest days, I can always count on my teammates.”
Michele definitely has admiration for her team and it shows. Her nomination, “Michele is an extraordinary nurse. Her experience, knowledge, work ethic and skills are a huge asset to the Trauma team. She comes in early every shift; reading notes, looking at labs and reviewing scans ensuring that she is prepared to provide the highest standard of care to her patients and their families. I have personally witnessed family members praising her on her compassion and care of their loved ones. I have seen her laugh, cry and pray with the families. Michele is a team player. She genuinely cares about her co-workers and their patients as well. When she has a free minute, she doesn't sit down, she goes room to room and checks on her co-workers to see if they need help. Michele is a giver. She is the chairman of our UPC team, trying to promote and ensure quality care to all our patients. She is constantly looking at ways to improve our unit, from equipment and protocols, to ensuring that her team’s birthdays are recognized. She is observant and listens! If she notices morale is low on the unit, she discusses ways to boost it. Last year for Nursing Services Week, she went out on her own time asking for donations from the community to hand out to each and every one of her co-workers, making sure their hard work and dedication didn't go unnoticed. She also spent countless hours on the application for the Silver Beacon Award in 2020 and again for our Gold Beacon Award in 2023! She is highly respected by the physicians, PAs and nurses that she works with. Michele's leadership, compassion and dedication, not only to her patients but her team exemplify the true meaning of this award! It is a privilege and honor to work next to her!”

nurses week 2024 recap
When asked how Michele felt about being awarded the Sue Wright Award, she expressed that she was very surprised. “Every specialty has nurses who stand out and to be chosen to represent the Sue Wright award amongst the caliber of nurses who were nominated, is like a dream. Nursing is a hard job and it takes a lot out of you every day. Hurley nurses on every floor stand together and hold each other up to get through each shift. However, I am fortunate to work under trauma. The trauma surgeons, coordinator, PAs, manager, educator and assistant nurse managers allow me to be who I am to provide the best care for the patients. They support us nurses and appreciate, as well as consider, our input for the patients. I feel fortunate to be recognized and feel honored to represent this award.”
Please join us in congratulating Michele Paulic!
Each year during Nursing Services week, the Sue Wright Nursing Award is given to an exemplary employee to celebrate their outstanding level of patient care and dedication. for extraordinary nurses
Yumeika Clayton is this month’s DAISY Award Honoree. The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion a nurse shows to patients and their families.
Yumeika graduated from University of Michigan-Flint with a biology degree. She returned to school attending Wayne State and achieved her nursing degree. Following college, she accepted a position at Henry Ford in Infectious Disease where she worked for six years. She came to Hurley and accepted a position in Supplemental Staffing where she has worked eleven years.
Supplemental Staffing is common practice in the healthcare industry, allowing coverage to be provided in areas where there may be higher census or staffing coverage needs. Working as an RN in Supplemental Staffing is no easy feat. While traditional employment settings offer a certain level of predictability, working in Supplemental Staffing may present a different work environment each day. For Yumeika, she may change areas daily or even within four hours. Yumeika begins her day by reporting to 8West Nursing Administration where she is given her assignment, which can be within any area of the medical center. Yumeika has worked on all nursing units with the exception of critical care.

YUMEIKA CLAYTON, RN
Yumeika working in different areas requires that she have a broader perspective of healthcare requirements and knowledge, as well as being able to work with an array of staff. This has given her many types of experiences, along with nursing skills required for each unit. Yumeika cares a great deal for her patients and it shows. Her recommendation noting, “Yumeika was such an amazing nurse to my husband while he was recovering from surgery. He was quite medicated at times and not making sense, but she catered to him with such kindness. She stayed on top of maintaining his pain levels and went to every extent to make him comfortable.”
"The Best part of being a nurse is when you receive a genuine thank you from a patient or a family. It is wonderful when you see they appreciate or care about how you performed your job, and they commend you for it.”
Wonderful was how Yumekia felt when she received the Daisy Award. “I was totally surprised. I could not have been more shocked to learn that I had received the Daisy Award. It felt good to be recognized and appreciated.”
Yumeika shared one of her favorite memories at Hurley. She worked with a colleague, Gordan, who gave everyone a nickname. The day came when he nicknamed her “Dr. Pumpkin.” It was not the nickname in itself that held significance but that she realized, “I am now a part of the Hurley Family.” Yumeika’s mother was also a member of the Hurley Family. She was a nurse and retired from Hurley. Her mother was actually her inspiration to pursue a career in nursing. Yumeika is proud to be an RN at Hurley but at home, she takes pleasure in being a grandmother. Yumeika has four grandchildren who she enjoys spending time with and a new grandbaby on the way.
Have you witnessed an extraordinary registered nurse in action? Nominate an exceptional RN for the DAISY Award. Nomination forms are available in the Cafeteria, 8W Nursing Office and on the Hurley intranet.

Understanding Brain Tumors & Neurosurgery in Older Patients with Frailty Screening
The May Hurley Healthy Living Series - "Understanding Brain Tumors & Neurosurgery in Older Patients with Frailty Screening” was held as a virtual event on May 21, 2024 at 3pm with Dr. Christian Bowers presenting. Dr. Bowers is the Director of Neurosurgical Oncology at Hurley Neurological Center. He is renowned for his frailty research. In fact, his Frailty lab, which has more than 2 dozen active research members, has already published 17 papers here in 2024. Dr. Bowers has been invited to give 18 national oral presentations. Dr. Bowers is dedicated to providing care to the underserved and has only worked at Level 1 Trauma Centers.
At this event, Dr. Bowers discussed the standardized method used to accurately identify frailty in patients and how this information is used to better manage neurosurgical treatment in older adults.
Physical frailty in older adults is a clinically recognizable state of increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes such as disability, falls, institutionalization, and death. It is often defined as a medical syndrome that results from age-associated declines across multiple physiologic systems. Clinicians and researchers need a standardized method to consistently and accurately identify those patients who are most frail to better manage their care. Hundreds of studies have shown frailty—a clinically recognizable state of increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes such as disability, falls, institutionalization and death—to be useful in assessing patient risk. In addition to frailty, Dr. Bowers discussed the types of brain tumors and the microsurgical techniques offered at Hurley Neurological Center, Mid-Michigan’s Center for Brain & Spine Disorders.
