An important way to understand your role with maintaining compliance at Hurley is to be familiar with the Standard Practices pertaining to compliance. These standard practices are located in the 5100-5199 Corporate Compliance folder on the intranet. This month I am highlighting SP 5106 – Role of Federal and State Laws in Preventing Fraud, Waste and Abuse. I mention this one first, not for you to be able to recite law references, but more so this section:
· Act with honesty and integrity in all business activities.
· Follow all laws and regulations that apply to work activities, including requirements of the Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health care programs. These requirements generally include maintaining complete and accurate medical records, applying appropriate charges and submitting only complete and accurate claims for services provided.
· Seek out supervisors, managers, directors or the Corporate Compliance Officer - or make an anonymous referral as described below - when you have a question about a possible false claim or other issues identified in the Hurley Medical Center Code of Conduct.
Please contact me at Sshue1@hurleymc.com if you have questions or other topics relating to the Compliance Program at Hurley you would like to be addressed.
Anonymous referrals can be made by calling 1.866.835.0555

“Essential reading for anyone interested in understanding and treating traumatic stress and the scope of its impact on society.” —Alexander McFarlane, Director of the Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He explores innovative treatments—from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, drama, and yoga—that offer new paths to recovery by activating the brain’s natural neuroplasticity. Based on Dr. van der Kolk’s own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal—and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.

A Hurley Healthy Living Hernia Repair & Recovery event was held on Wednesday, March 20, at 5:00pm at Brick street of Grand Blanc. Drs. Kristoffer Wong, Patrick Beer, Adam Howell and Gul Sachwani-Daswani were there to speak about the minimally invasive options available to treat hernia and to answer questions from the audience. While some hernias do not cause symptoms, if you experience discomfort or pain, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Left untreated, a hernia can lead to more serious, sometimes life-threatening, problems.

You might notice some new fresh faces as we welcome the crew from MCSI Cornerstone who are now assisting as Miracle Poppers. These folks come not only every Friday to pop big Miracle Pop bags for the Lobby Shop but are also appearing as official volunteers on Thursdays helping out as Miracle Poppers. They rotate amongst the crew so all can share in the popping experience. They all practice the entire week to ensure that they provide the best popcorn ever for the

GABRIELLE GANTOS, RN, BSN
Gabrielle Gantos, RN, BSN, is this month's recipient of the DAISY Award, which honors nurses for their exceptional compassion towards patients and families. Recognized for her unwavering dedication and professionalism, Gabrielle's commitment to patient care stood out to a family in a time of need. Described as a "rock star" for her ability to de-escalate situations and build trust with patients, Gabrielle's kindness and leadership were commended.
Gabrielle's journey into nursing began at Camp Quality, where she witnessed the importance of enhancing quality of life for children facing medical challenges. Inspired by this experience, she pursued a nursing degree from UofM-Flint. She found her way to pediatric care at Hurley Medical
Center, drawn to its supportive environment and reputation as a Level 1 Trauma Center and children's hospital.
In her daily routine, Gabrielle prioritizes providing the best care possible to her patients during her twelve-hour shifts. She values the relationships she builds with patients and colleagues alike, finding fulfillment in the camaraderie and support within the team at Hurley.
Surprised by her DAISY Award nomination, Gabrielle acknowledges the challenges and rewards of nursing and expresses gratitude for the recognition. She sees the DAISY Award as a meaningful gesture to honor nurses' dedication and feels honored to receive such recognition.
"Gabrielle was absolutely amazing to have if we could have kept her we would have. We had a very upsetting situation prior to her arrival and she was a “rock star” at coming in de-escalating the situation; gaining trust with our daughter. She was kind, patient and caring. She made my daughter feel heard, as well as myself, and was great at leading our team and experience through the night. She also made sure we had everything we needed."
Have you witnessed an extraordinary registered nurse in action? Nominate an exceptional RN for the DAISY Award. Nomination forms are available in the Cafeteria, 8W Nursing Office and on the Hurley intranet.
Many people find success tracking their food using free apps, spreadsheets or even pen and paper. People are much more likely to lose weight, keep it off, reduce sodium intake or reduce sugar or fat grams, if desired.
The first step in tracking your food is really just seeing what you are currently consuming on an average day. Then, once you know your starting point and have determined your goal, you can tweak what you consume (based on your own food preferences and goals) to fit your nutritional needs.
• The more often you track, the more likely you are to reach your goals. Tracking keeps you informed about your intake over time. Tracking gets easier the more you do it. There is a learning curve, so be patient and over time, it will become a habit.
• Track something even if you do not remember it all. Tracking food creates muscle memory. The more you do it, the easier it gets. Being accountable to yourself can start by logging something at each meal.
• Get organized. Keep your tracker handy, or leave your app open or on your home screen. Do not create barriers, making tracking as easy as you possibly can.
• Log ahead of time to see if that food aligns with your goals. As you eat, you can edit your food items or portions as needed, but logging in advance can help you stay on track.
• Increases mindfulness. Can you remember what you ate for dinner last night? People often forget everything eaten once time has passed. It is easy to forget portions, condiments, snacks and treats. Tracking helps you remain mindful of what you eat because you have to log it.
• Tracking provides you a better understanding of your current eating habits. You need to know how many calories you’re currently consuming and what ratio of macronutrients (fat, protein and carbohydrates) before you can tweak anything to make progress towards your goal.
• Your food logs will Inform you how nutrient dense your food is. Tracking your food helps you determine what foods are “worth it” for you to meet your goals/nutritional needs. It helps you realize what foods are inhibiting you from meeting your goals (and, therefore, help you reduce the amount of consumption.
• Helps you balance your total calories and macronutrients throughout the day. By logging each meal, you can see how balanced your meals are and this can help you make better choices in the future or ensure you continue to make balanced choices for sustained energy.
• Gives you options. You can feel empowered that you have control over incorporating a variety of your favorite foods, in moderation, into your diet.
• Allows you to plan ahead. Decide what you are going to get at the grocery store while at home or pre-read the menu and log those foods in advance.
Your Dedication. Our Appreciation.
