meet our In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board. Given that many of our Board members have served multiple five-year terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter. Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. Leading the meetings to ensure the extensive oversight responsibilities are met is the Board Chair. Our current Chair of the Board of Managers is Frances Gilcreast.
FRANCES GILCREAST BOARD CHAIR The role of the Hurley Board Chair is to preside at any and all meetings of the Board of Hospital Managers and serve as an ex-officio member on all Board Committees. The Board Chair appoints Board members to the Board Committees and appoints the Chairpersons of each Committee. Ms. Gilcreast has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2005. She currently serves as the President of the NAACP, Flint Chapter, and was named the 2007 NAACP President of the Year for the State of Michigan. Ms. Gilcreast graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Social Work. She has received a number of awards and honors, including the Donald J. Riegle Community Service Award by the Flint Jewish Federation and the Flint Pan-Hellenic Council’s Community Service Awards. Ms. Gilcreast is a member of the Gamma Delta Chapter Hall of Living Legends and the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Ms. Gilcreast did serve as Secretary of the Hurley Board of Managers from 2011-2014 and the Board Vice Chair from 2018-2020 prior to being elected the Board Chair in October 2020.

to serve as the Chair of the Hurley Board of Managers. This Board is composed of 14 other dedicated and community-focused individuals that I am blessed to work with, ensuring that we are focused on the mission of this great institution. I am enormously proud of the hard work and the commitment of Hurley Medical
Center's staff and employees who have made sure that it continues to be a beacon of light in this community for more than 114 years. I am so grateful to be a part of the Hurley Family.

ur February Employee of the Month is Jason Holt. He’s been making a difference at Hurley for the past 5.5 years, most recently as an Anesthesia Aide. “I work very hard, so I am very appreciative,” Jason shares. “I wasn’t expecting it—I just come in and do what I’m asked to do. It feels good to be recognized and that Melany Gavulic and Amy Benko took time out of their day for this.”
“Jason continually proves himself as a key member of the anesthesia team,” states Bethany Lipka, Chief Nurse Anesthetist. “He is always willing to go above and beyond to ensure patients receive the best anesthesia care possible. His hard work and dedication is noted daily. We truly appreciate him as a member of the team.” Jason’s family inspires him to better himself and to work his hard every day. That includes his wife, Kellie Holt, Hurley’s very own MRI Screening Technologist, and their three children. When they’re not busy with sports, Jason and his family have started taking day trips to Michigan’s natural wonders, like Sleeping Bear Dunes. Jason also enjoys woodworking and is currently working on a bench for his kitchen. As a diehard Michigan fan, he’s sure to watch every basketball and football game he can catch.
Jason takes pride in doing his job well, knowing that when he’s done his best, everyone is taken care of and the CRNAs he supports have everything they need for their patients. As one of his department’s go-to people, his responsibilities include placing orders, stocking supplies, cleaning machines between patients and Jason received a gift package that contacting Biomed included a pizza party with his team, a and IT on behalf of the day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star CRNAs. He also helps fleece jacket, a one-month membership students learn where to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a -Bethany Lipka, Chief Nurse Anesthetist supplies are. “I make $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, sure the CRNAs have the supplies they need and don’t a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a have to worry about cleaning machines or running to framed certificate. Congratulations, Jason! the supply room, so they can focus on patient care and training students,” Jason explains. “I don’t want them worrying if their cart is empty or a machine isn’t working.”
Jason is always willing to go above and beyond to ensure patients receive the best anesthesia care possible.
Prior to joining the Anesthesia Department, Jason worked in Radiology, the Warehouse, the Laboratory, Surgery, and worked alongside with the Sterile Processing department. When many departments were scaled down at the beginning of the pandemic, Jason was called back as a COVID Tech, cleaning masks and bringing food to the floors. Working his way up across various departments, Jason has gained wide-ranging experience that’s applicable to each new role. He’s adept at interacting with people with diverse personalities and thinking on his feet. "By working for multiple departments, I have been given the opportunity to learn about several different areas of the hospital that are critical to keeping it running,” Jason notes. “Plus, I have met so many wonderful people while working in those departments."

Congratulations to the well-deserved Genesee County volunteers named winners of this year's Sybyl Award
SHIRLEY COCHRAN M O T H E R LY I N T E R C E S S I O N Motherly Intercession was founded as a grassroots organization in 1999 when Shirley Cochran and six members of the community committed to organizing a meaningful service project in the Genesee County Jail for children whose incarcerated mothers would not be home with them for Christmas. Since then, this work has been a labor of love for Shirley who has filled the Executive Director's position for the past 20 years and received no monetary compensation for her efforts during the first ten years. Shirley is a non-stop person who impresses with her spirit, honesty, compassion, integrity and love for the kids and families.
DR. SIRINIVAS (BOBBY) MUKKAMALA M I C H I G A N S TAT E MEDICAL SOCIETY Dr. Mukkamala is very involved in various medical and community activities. He is past president and still serves on the board of the Genesee County Medical Society. He is the president of the Michigan State Medical Society and chairelect of the American Medical Association. Dr. Mukkamala also devotes his time to Flint's Downtown revitalization efforts as past chairman of the board of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and he served on the board of the Crim Fitness Foundation. Dr. Mukkamala has been chairman of the Foundation for Flint, Flint Kids Learn and is involved with several downtown businesses. Dr. Bobby has been a strong advocate in combating opioid addiction through his involvement with the AMA, MSMS and the Genesee County Medical Society. He also mentors high school students to help them prepare for their ACTs. Dr. Bobby is such a compassionate and caring person and a big cheerleader for Flint.
DANIELLE NADINE BROWN, LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT WINNER (POSTHUMOUS)-FLINT & GENESEE LITERACY NETWORK Danielle worked tirelessly to establish Two-generation approaches to literacy in Flint. Two-generation approaches provide opportunities to address the needs of vulnerable children and the adults in their lives together ensuring an intergenerational cycle of success. "Volunteerism is the only way" was instilled in Danielle as a young child and she could often be seen volunteering around the city. Danielle's commitment to service could be seen through her endless hours of hands-on community involvement as well as the numerous leadership positions within local and regional community service organizations. She was always connecting families to services they needed or programs to help ease their situation and with a longer-term goal of lifting them out of poverty. The compassion she had for children was evidenced not only in her community service but also by her literally taking in and raising many children, including nieces, nephews, godchildren and others. Described as mothering her community, Danielle probably took care of nearly a million kids throughout her 49 years of life in Flint. ur February Volunteer of the Month, Karen Florida, has always sought to help others and give back to her community. She’s been volunteering at Hurley since 2007 and logged more than 2,600 service hours. Prior to joining our volunteer corps, Karen taught deaf children in Flint elementary and junior high schools for 32 years. Karen first started pushing the “goodie cart” in 2007, joining the surgical lounge too in 2010. When she’s pushing the goodie cart, Karen brightens everyone’s day by bringing their favorite treats, whether it’s a pop, candy, chips or a magazine. In the surgical lounge, she acts as a conduit between patients or their family members and the doctors and nurses, making sure visitors know where to go and easing any nerves. These interactions are Karen’s favorite part of volunteering at Hurley, knowing she’s helping and learning from patients, visitors and staff alike.
KAREN FLORIDA "Karen is innovative and is always looking for ways to better how we serve Hurley Medical Center,” says Jordan Brown, Director of Volunteer and Community Engagement. “It was her idea to make our goodie cart electronic and easier to maneuver. Therefore, we created a better version of our cart that allows for more mobility around the medical center and the ability to serve more people. She is kind, she is thoughtful and always helpful." “Enormously helpful and friendly” is how Karen describes the people she encounters throughout the medical center, noting how employees she doesn’t even know will run to hold doors open for her when she pushes the goodie cart by herself. Reflecting on what inspires her to volunteer at Hurley, Karen shares, “It’s a good place to reenergize your brain and you’re welcomed right away. Just the overall acceptance and joy that volunteers are here helping—everyone seems to appreciate what we do. You feel like you’re really doing something useful and that’s a joy. I learn something new every time too.”

Volunteer Cut-N-Sew Program More now than ever our Hurley Foundation Volunteer Corps Cut- N-Sew program is busy creating handmade treasures for our patients. From tie blankets to knitted beanies, our volunteer program is spending these cold winter months inside warming our hearts with these sweet donations. Volunteer Sandy White of Davison is known for her holiday donations, you might recognize her Turkey hats, Valentine’s Day hats and Christmas ornament bulb caps. Groups throughout the county, such as the Salvation Army Women's Knitting group, drop off monthly donations of NICU Octopi and blankets.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR MICHIGAN MEDICAL DOCTORS Authority: Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended
REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the board of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs. A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

Elizabeth ElinCalcador, RN-BSN, an integral part of our 7East team for the past six years, was selected as our December DAISY Award winner. With a palpable warmth and zest for life, Elizabeth is very deserving of the award, which recognizes exceptional nurses who provide skillful and compassionate care. “I was so excited and honored because I understand how big of an award this is,” she shares. “I also knew some other great nurses were nominated. To be picked out of the whole group, meant a lot!” As an RN, Elizabeth has a long list of responsibilities, which include doing assessments, charting, administering medications, giving physical therapy, toileting, providing patient education, advocating, placing orders, developing
and implementing care plans, transporting and providing supportive care. In the midst of performing all of these duties, Elizabeth thrives on helping her patients and giving them the personalized attention they deserve. “I love when my patients reach their goals,” she proclaims. “It also makes me happy when I have time to spend with my patients and learn about his/her history. My patients have some of the best stories.” In addition to building connections with her patients and coworkers on 7E, Elizabeth enjoys participating in hospitalwide events hosted by the Diversity and Inclusion Council, which allow her to form and strengthen bonds with the extended Hurley family. Family is very important to Elizabeth and inspires her to do her best. She appreciates her fiancé Adam for his unwavering

support, especially when her work schedule is hectic, her oldest daughter, Gabby, for helping with the younger two, AJ and Stassi, as well as her grandma, Ella Elin, and parents, Mimi and Brian, for all of their support. Elizabeth received a certificate encased in a portfolio, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture from Zimbabwe called “A Healer’s Touch.” As part of the celebration, Elizabeth and her team were treated to cinnamon rolls and fresh coffee. National Nutrition Month Is A Good Time To Make
National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.
1. Eat Breakfast Start your day with a healthy breakfast that includes lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Try making a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese, salsa and a whole wheat tortilla or a parfait with low-fat plain yogurt, fruit and whole grain cereal.
2. Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and veggies add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber to your plate.
3. Watch Portion Sizes Measuring cups and using the Hand Guide will help you compare your portions to the recommended serving size.
4. Get to Know Food Labels Reading the Nutrition Facts panel can help you choose foods and drinks to meet your nutrient needs.
5. Fix Healthy Snacks Healthy snacks can sustain your energy levels between meals, especially when they include a combination of foods. 8. Order Out Smart Stick to your healthy eating plan by planning ahead, asking questions, and choosing foods carefully. Compare nutrition information, if available, and look for healthier options that are grilled, baked, broiled or steamed.
9. Enact Family Meal Time Plan to eat as a family at least a few times each week. Set a regular meal-times. Turn off the TV, phones, and other electronic devices to encourage conversation. Get kids involved in meal planning, cooking, and use this time to teach them about good nutrition.
10. Experiment with Plant-Based Meals Expand variety in your menus with budget friendly meatless meals. Many recipes that use meat and poultry can be made without. Vegetables, beans, and lentils are all great substitutes. Try including one meatless meal per week to start.
