Hurley Medical Center is constantly transforming care to meet the needs of the rapidly changing and evolving healthcare landscape. To that end, we are often asked why we are here. The simple answer is that the patient is the reason we are here. Since 1908, we have been providing exceptional care for families in Genesee County and beyond. This was the great vision of James J. Hurley, who had a dream to build a hospital for anyone to receive care that needed it, regardless of ability to pay. That mission remains intact today, 109 years later.

Our façade may have changed a bit on the outside, but the feeling and the comprehensive care, compassion, and experience our Hurley family provides remains unchanged. We are always here for you.

We are grateful to the community who supports us and provides us with the privilege of caring for them. We return this appreciation through our ongoing efforts to meet the needs in this ever changing healthcare landscape, and maintaining our availability as a community resource. Whether you are visiting one of Hurley’s outpatient centers or you are in need of highly specialized inpatient care, or any type of care in between, we strive to be here for all of your healthcare needs.

It is my privilege to thank you, our donors, volunteers, and staff, for all of your efforts. The doctors, nurses, volunteers, and staff at Hurley Medical Center are part of our community because they care. Collectively, we are motivated to fulfill our mission of “Clinical Excellence. Service to People.” by enhancing the experience and quality of services that we provide.

For us, this commitment is

personal and can be seen every day.

This year, we share with you stories of courage and determination by those who have chosen Hurley for their healthcare needs. These experiences speak to both the marvels of our medical technology as well as the respect, dignity, care, and compassion received by everyone who walks through our doors. The patient is, and must remain, the reason we exist as an organization.

Hurley is a 109-year story that began when James J. Hurley established a gift of property and funds for a local hospital that would serve everyone – a gift made out of compassion for others.

The

story continues as we have developed into the area’s only, and the State’s northern most, Level I Trauma Center (highest level), Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (highest level), Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and Burn Unit. These are but a few of the crucial healthcare services that make Hurley an essential regional resource.

I have come full circle. I started volunteering at Hurley when I was in high school with the Future Nurses Club. I graduated from HMC School of Nursing and worked as an RN in Critical Care for over 40 years. After 2 years of retirement, I decided I needed to come back to Hurley in some capacity.

When Rebekah Sassack became critically ill last fall, she was admitted to another local hospital with what was thought to be pneumonia. Although being treated, her condition continued to worsen. Rebekah was finally transferred to Hurley Children’s Hospital by ambulance, lights flashing all the way. Her dad, Scott, followed by car, not knowing what to think. He prayed the entire way.

“Coming off of what was probably the worst 24 hours of our lives, we drove towards Hurley, not knowing what our future held. Within 10 minutes of arriving, we knew we were in the right place. The Hurley team wrapped their arms around us immediately, taking control. Dr. Sachwani, Dr. Sharman and our rock Kari, our nurse, were there for us every step of the way. They took the time to talk to us, Rebekah included, and explain what was going on. We now knew her lung was partially collapsed, her white blood cell count was through the roof, and she would need surgery.

But the crazy part is we both felt certain she was exactly where she needed to be and, even at that moment, we had hope,” adds Rebekah’s mom Tanya.

Rebekah was immediately admitted to the Hurley Pediatric ICU. A team gathered around her, led by: Dr. Sachwani, trauma surgeon; Dr. Sharman, Pediatric Intensivist; and Dr. Raffe, Infectious Disease Specialist. Rebekah’s right lung was 45% collapsed and she was diagnosed with a potentially fatal case of sepsis. She was miserable and scared. So were her parents.

The team at Hurley was able to save Rebekah’s life. Two surgeries and eight days later this miracle girl was home for Thanksgiving with her parents and her twin sister. Says Tanya and Scott Sassack, “God brought us to Hurley Children’s Hospital and the staff saved our daughter’s life. What a precious gift we were given, one we will never forget.”

2016 PINK NIGHT PALOOZA On August 11, 2016, people of all ages had fun helping kick off a pre-event for Pink Night Palooza at Brickstreet Bar & Grill. On Thursday, October 6, Hurley Medical Center and Financial Plus Credit Union teamed up for the firstever Pink Night Palooza main event. Close to 500 community supporters gathered at the Holiday Inn Gateway Centre for a night of pink, fun, and fundraising. Over $120,000 was raised to support Hurley’s Breast Cancer Navigator Fund. This vital yearround Breast Navigator Fund helps fill financial and other gaps for women during their breast cancer journey.

HURLEY FOUNDATION EVENTS 2016 FALL GOLF CLASSIC On September 12, 2016, guests enjoyed a day filled with golf, great food, entertainment, and lots of fun at the 33rd annual Fall Golf Classic. Over $140,000 was raised to benefit Hurley’s Level I Trauma Center and Burn Unit - the only one in the region.

2017 HURLEY BENEFIT BALL The 36th annual black tie gala was held on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Holiday Inn Gateway Centre. A sold-out crowd of 425 guests enjoyed a magical Motown evening filled with live entertainment from the Motown Imitators, fine dining, a first-class silent auction, and lots of dancing to the premiere dance & Motown band, Mainstreet Soul. Over $210,000 was raised to benefit Hurley Medical Center’s Senior Services, which allows us to continue to provide the most exceptional clinical and compassionate care for our region’s seniors. “Hurley will always have a special place in our hearts because of the way they supported us in the beginning of our journey with our son Ben. Seven years ago, we walked into Hurley’s ER with our 6-week-old baby in our arms.

He was very floppy and was turning blue from lack of oxygen. We were scared and completely beside ourselves with worry. The nurses and doctors at Hurley helped ease our fears by listening to us and reassuring us they would do everything in their power to figure out what was going on with our son. They admitted us to the PICU and that was where we started hearing the words Spinal Muscular Atrophy. We had no idea what that meant. As the doctor explained what life would be like for our son, my husband and I were overcome with so much sadness. I will never forget the nurse standing beside us, crying with us and sharing in our grief. Looking back, I think about how wonderful and supportive the staff at Hurley was.

We know, without a doubt, they will do everything they can for him. We give back to this amazing hospital by volunteering as a family at the Hurley Children’s Hospital Radiothons and Telethons. Our daughter, Lily, put together and gave out treat bags for the kids that were in the hospital on Halloween.

“I bought them Halloween bags so they wouldn’t have to miss out on all the fun that everyone else was having,” said Lily.

TANKED! If you’ve never seen an 850 gallon, four ton aquarium in person, now you can! The lobby of Hurley Children’s Hospital is the site for this gift from Alli Simpson and the team at the Animal Planet Show, Tanked. It was installed at the end of November, 2016, and was the focal point of the show’s one-hour season finale.

Typically, in the Animal Planet series Tanked, Las Vegas-based Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM), one of the country’s most successful builders of aquariums, and co-owners Wayde King and Brett Raymer, build enormous and awe-inspiring tanks and aquariums for top celebrities.

Alli Simpson decided that she’d like her tank to go to one of the 170 CMN Hospitals and Hurley Children’s Hospital was selected. This Australian singer, model, actress, fashion columnist, and Radio Disney show host is also the Teen Ambassador for CMN Hospitals. She enjoys connecting with hospitalized kids and projects that can bring a smile to people’s faces.

The cylindrical design of the tank at Hurley features the recognizable Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals balloons along with the Flint Vehicle Arches and Longway Planetarium. Artists’ palettes in the aquarium represent the Pediatric Art Program at Hurley Children’s Hospital, while a guitar represents Alli Simpson and her music as well as the hospital’s music program.

THANKS FOR VOTING FOR MIRACLES! Credit Unions for Kids celebrated its 20th anniversary as a CMN Hospitals partner by presenting the “Vote for Miracles” contest last December in cooperation with CO-OP Financial Services. At the end of the three-week contest, Hurley Children’s Hospital won first place with more than 43,000 on-line votes. The $50,000 top prize, along with an additional $10,000 gift from the Sheppy Dog Fund (Dr. Alan Klein advisor), will go towards Hurley’s Private Pediatric Patient Rooms Initiative.

BOWLATHON Isaiah Struck from Bay City was three years old when he was hospitalized at Hurley for severe burns on his legs and hand. To watch him at the 2016 Bowlathon, you’d never know that anything had ever happened!

KOHL’S CARES FOR HEALTHY KIDS Thanks to a grant of $89,480 from Kohl’s, local kids have enjoyed all kinds of fun through the “Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids” program.

HURLEY CARDIAC & PULMONARY REHAB SERVICES Hurley Cardiac Rehab moved from its former location at Insight Fitness to its new location on Hurley’s Campus, on the ground level. The new space provides cardiac rehab patients a larger and more comfortable environment to receive high-quality care from our nursing and exercise physiology staff.

The cardiac rehab program consists of three phases. During phase 1 (inpatient), a gradual progression of activity will be offered to help patients return home quickly, while preparing them for the second phase. Phase 2 (outpatient) consists of an EKG monitored program, up to 36 sessions. This includes blood pressure monitoring, monitored exercise, nutrition counseling, emotional support, and education about lifestyle changes to reduce risks of heart disease while strengthening the cardiovascular system. Phase 3 (maintenance) is a self-pay program for those individuals that complete phase 2 and wish to continue to exercise in the monitored environment to improve their heart health.

The Cardiac Rehab facility serves patients who have suffered a heart attack, undergone certain heart procedures, have congestive heart failure and/or other specific heart diseases. Our staff collaborates continuously with the goal of improving quality of life and preventing future hospitalizations.
