FROM HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER PRESIDENT & CEO What a year we have had! Who would have imagined just one year ago that Hurley Medical Center would be counted on even more as a trusted resource for care in our city, county and region? As a Level I Trauma Center with a broad regional reach, we are accustomed to dealing with a crisis. The bigger the crisis, the deeper we dig, and it brings out the best in us. COVID-19 tested us for sure, but it also helped us to realize what we already knew…..we provide Clinical Excellence, Service to People in the face of any situation. Whether we are caring for a trauma patient, a high risk obstetrical patient, a pediatric illness or a geriatric fracture, the compassion is the same. We brought that same level of compassion to the care of COVID-19 patients at Hurley.

I’ve always been impressed by the dedicated caregivers that make up our diverse Hurley family. They embody the spirit of taking control in the most challenging circumstances. Every day, these warriors put their own health and well-being on the line in service of others. We all recognize that this can’t be done without the support of donors like you. We are humbled by the outpouring of support from our community, whether through donations of personal protective equipment, food or letters of encouragement. As we care for COVID-19 patients, the community cares for us.

We all recognize that this pandemic is a marathon and we are not near the finish line; however, what we did during the first surge and what we have done since are equally important. We recognize our status as a trusted resource, and we welcome the myriad of questions posed by anxious patients and family members.

That is what we are here for. We care for the physical and emotional well-being of all people during times of crisis.

We don’t take our responsibilities lightly and we recognize the privilege it is to have people seek us for their care. We will continue to make our way through this pandemic and know that we are even stronger because of what we have been through and continue to go through. FROM HURLEY FOUNDATION PRESIDENT Like so many others, I’m seeking some stable ground in our new world. To say that things have changed over this past year is an obvious understatement and underscores the fact that virtually nothing remains the same. With the threat of winter flurries in the air and on the news, my hopes for stable ground vanished as I learned that we now have to redefine what we think of as “snow days” now that a “school day” and “teacher” and “school” have all been redefined as well. Not only has my cheese been moved, but so has my cutting board, knife, and Triscuit!

We all have our ways of getting through these days. Like you, I look for those things that are unchangeable. Admittedly, I’m fortunate to be surrounded by the positivity and significance of Hurley’s 112-year history in Flint and Genesee County as the first history book devoted to this amazing institution is being completed. I’m surrounded by the stories from our community of families as we celebrate our 30th year as a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. And finally, I’m surrounded by reflections of this past year as this edition of our Inside Report celebrates Hurley’s incredible reach that our rich history has created.

With all these reminders, I find my ‘unchangeable’ in the values, actions, and empathy found at Hurley. Much has been said these days about the integrity and commitment that organizations owe to the communities in which they serve. The impact that Hurley has made on the lives of our patients, staff, and physicians, speaks volumes of the values it exemplifies. While I can’t say this does much to prepare me for the flurries coming my way, knowing some things have stayed the same is a great comfort.

I hope the enclosed stories and celebrations of Hurley’s work brings some stable ground to you as well.

HURLEY RECEIVES GRANTS TO PROCESS COVID-19 TESTS Hurley received a grant of $50,000 from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to help purchase a laboratory analyzer. The award came from the Foundation’s Greater Flint Urgent Relief Fund, established to coordinate and deploy resources to nonprofit organizations in the Greater Flint area affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Additional grant funds ($23,777) from The Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA), were also used for this equipment purchase.

“This funding helped purchase a second medium throughput analyzer, as the other analyzer was already at capacity for lab testing other than COVID-19. It is unsustainable to run both COVID-19 testing and the other testing on that analyzer, and we needed a second one to absorb the volume of testing. This equipment allowed us to do more total and frequent COVID testing to place patients who test positive appropriately so they don’t pose a risk to COVID-19 negative patients and staff,” said Mitra Tewari, Hurley’s Administrative Director of Clinical Laboratory and Manager of Sterile Services.

Recent infrastructure changes are being made at Hurley for its “going green” initiative. Joseph Hosler, Operations Manager, said these include updates to the heating and cooling system, lighting, and additional generators.

Medical Center will also save energy. The installation of CO2 sensors will improve the hospital’s overall air quality.

The hospital’s Direct Digital Control System (DDC), which controls the heating and cooling system, is being upgraded. Hosler projects the new DDC will boost Hurley’s Energy Star rating by about thirty points, which is significant.

The addition of emergency generators will improve Hurley’s ability to maintain adequate power in case of a hospital-wide outage. Newer models replaced more of the hospital’s chillers and cooling towers. Infrastructure changes to the main steam and cooling water plants have made both plants more efficient.

Lighting throughout the hospital has been replaced by LED where possible. New light systems contain sensors to help ensure the

THE MIRACLE BEHIND HURLEY'S MIRACLE KIDS Linda Tracy-Stephens has been committed to Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals’ programs at Hurley since 1997. She began her involvement through the annual CMN telethon, in which she was responsible for developing the two-day program script featuring inspiring stories of Hurley kids. Her skills and commitment to building relationships with the children and their families led to her becoming the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Director for the Hurley Foundation, beginning in 2006. While this role focuses on raising funds for Hurley

Children’s Hospital, Linda does so much more than that. Her commitment to the children is evident in everything she does. “Working for CMN Hospitals feels like less of a job and more of a passion,” she says. With 2020 testing the entire nation, we all need someone like Linda by our side– someone who exhibits the perfect combination of leadership, positivity, and humility.

The entire Hurley Foundation team is grateful to Linda for dedicating 23 years to helping children across mid-Michigan who are treated at Hurley Children’s Hospital.

O U R PA S T | O U R PA R T N E R S | O U R M I R A C L E S In 1990, Hurley was invited to join Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) because we offer the most outstanding, kid-centered care in our region and we do so regardless of any family’s ability to pay. We joined 160 other prestigious hospitals across the United States and Canada in this network that was created by Marie Osmond and John Schneider. Hurley’s CMN pediatric service territory grew to 15 counties extending as far north as Alpena, Mount Pleasant to the west, a portion of the Thumb, as well as Genesee and Shiawassee counties. Today, the network has grown to 170 CMN Hospitals serving 10 million children and their families every year.

AN ANNUAL TRADITION Throughout the years, hundreds of families, national partners, community organizations and thousands of volunteers came together to celebrate the CMN mission: “We save children’s lives and we give families hope.”

The first local Children’s Miracle Network telethon for Hurley was on WJRT-TV 12 in Flint on June 2-3, 1990. It aired for 21 hours and featured stories of pediatric “miracles” including Anwan Gilbert. The smallest NICU survivor at the time, he was born 16 weeks premature on November 26, 1983. Weighing one pound, two ounces, he spent nearly six months in the NICU. Six-year-old Anwan Gilbert appeared on the first Telethon in 1990.

The final local Children’s Miracle Network telethon for Hurley was on ABC 12 on June 5, 2016. That 10-hour broadcast was a reunion as miracle families from the past joined current families celebrating their children’s improvement. One of the “miracles” was young Miracle Mack. Born on August 15, 2013, weighing just 14 ounces, she spent 114 days in the NICU. Miracle Mack at the 2016 Telethon

While most of the Telethon was broadcast from the TV station, fun segments from Hurley included interviews in the pediatric playroom. This 1998 segment, when Joanne Hubinger was Child Life Services Director, shows how dramatically different the room looked compared to its transformation in 2006. 31 YEARS OF

RUNNING FOR THE KIDS

For 31 years, the month of July was synonymous with Tuuri Race Day. It began as the Tuuri 10,000 (10K). In 1984, the 5K Run was added. The Children’s Challenge allowed youngsters to participate and in 2006, the first One-Mile Celebration Walk was added. A special t-shirt for this inaugural event was designed by Regina Stoolmaker, who sustained major, life-altering injuries from an auto accident. She successfully completed the one-mile course with the assistance of her brother, Richard. The final Tuuri Race day was in 2010.

The summer of 2020 was unlike any other in the history of Children’s Miracle Network programs. While many things have changed in our lives over the past several months, one thing has not, the dedication of our Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals national partners who continue to work hard on behalf of the kids at Hurley Children’s Hospital.

Faced with an unprecedented campaign year, Walmart and Sam’s Club stores across mid-Michigan rose to the occasion this summer.

In the face of adversity, they demonstrated their commitment to helping local kids, and to making a difference in the lives of their associates by increasing year-over-year fundraising results by 101%. Walmart store #1928 in Flint, Michigan experienced a jaw-dropping 257% increase in fundraising at their location, and were awarded a custom trophy designed and created by the 2020 CMN Champion, Hadlee Deines.

For nearly ten years, Panda Express has supported Hurley Children’s Hospital as one of only a few select partners who fundraises year-round for the kids.

At Panda Express, they never pass up an opportunity to make the ask and explain that the money donated at the register stays local to help kids across mid-Michigan who are treated at Hurley.

In addition to raising tens of thousands of dollars each year, Panda Express also stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide meals to Hurley employees and over 9,000 personal protective masks.

Speedway was recognized for their extraordinary commitment to CMN Hospitals or foundations through innovative fundraising and awareness initiatives. We are so proud of our amazing friends at Speedway for earning this well-deserved honor, and thank them for going above and beyond to support our heroes on the front lines throughout the COVID pandemic by delivering water, snacks, and sports drinks donated by their customers to the team at Hurley Medical Center and Hurley Children’s Hospital.

n the 2019 holiday season, Hurley Children’s Hospital partnered with local credit unions to launch its first-ever social media-based giving campaign: #SantaCares.

The Hurley Children’s Hospital team created a complete media library filled with unique content of Santa visiting with kids at the hospital. This content was provided and used by the credit unions to promote their fundraising goal on all major platforms.

The images and videos used throughout #SantaCares were breathtaking and essential to

the campaign’s success.

Hurley Children’s Hospital received $40,418 from the #SantaCares campaign, with local credit unions bringing in half. As an unexpected surprise, CO-OP Financial Services agreed to donate a $10,000 “Miracle Match” to bring the total to $50,418!

From hosting internal fundraisers, making handmade blankets, and supporting Hurley’s “Glow for Miracles” event, credit union teams in the greater Flint area truly embodied their mission of “People helping people”.

Since the 2019 launch of the #SantaCares campaign, area credit unions continued to come together by supporting #ChildrensHospitalsWeek and collaborating on the 2020 “CHANGE a Child’s Life” campaign.

I

t was January 4, 2019 at 1:06 am.

After over a year of infertility, Brad and Courtney Moore were preparing to welcome their first child. The most beautiful day of their lives suddenly turned chaotic and bittersweet as they welcomed their little boy into the world.

Nolan James Moore was born six and a half weeks early, weighing just 4 lbs, 14 oz.

A year and a half later, the Moore family found themselves back at Hurley Children’s Hospital, pregnant with their second child.

Courtney was admitted to the hospital at 28 weeks due to severe pregnancy complications. On June 3, 2020, Courtney was getting ready for her last test before sleep when she noticed something was not right. Doctors and nurses began running into the room, assessing the situation and prepping her for an emergency C-section. Emerson Rose Moore was born on June 4, at 31 weeks, one day old. She weighed just 3 lbs, 11 oz. Her first 31 days in Hurley’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were filled with IVs and countless pokes.

Over half her stay was spent on a CPAPand feeding tube. However, Courtney recalls that tiny Emerson’s days were also filled with the most gentle, compassionate, and loving care from the Hurley team.

“We had a little background from everything the doctors and nurses taught us with our son,” she said. “It was not easy going back and forth every day for 31 days, trying to be there for both of our children, but we were always greeted with a smile and a friendly face.” As they look back at these days, forever etched into their hearts and memories, they can’t help but smile.

Courtney said, “Our faith played a major role in our positivity. Faith that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle, and that He places people in your lives for a reason. The team of doctors and nurses that cared for us throughout our stay were some of those special people placed in our lives that we will never forget.”

Brad works at Dort Financial Credit Union, which consistently gives back to Hurley Children’s Hospital and emphasizes volunteering for children’s organizations.

He said, “Never in a million years did we expect to someday become one of those families on the receiving end of these services. We feel so blessed to be part of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals family. You never understand the benefit of a CMN Hospital until you find yourself in the need of one. We saw first-hand how donations to Hurley Children’s Hospital are being used. What may seem like a simple reclining chair is so much more to a NICU family. For us, that chair gave us the moment where we finally felt like a family.”

The Moores say that Hurley doesn’t feel like a hospital, it feels like a home away from home.

REACHING FOR THE

hirteen-year-old Khiyah Leslie has battled with a hidden “enemy” since she was born, but she was two years old before her family found out what was wrong. Khiyah was born in Illinois and then her family moved to Arizona. One day her mom, Tiffany Millison, rushed her to the Emergency Department because she suspected that Khiyah had suffered a stroke. She was right. It was then that Tiffany learned that her daughter suffered from Sickle Cell Anemia. The disease itself is debilitating and, while it is treatable, there is no cure. This condition is the result of sickle-shaped red blood cells rather than healthy, round shaped ones. These cells can get stuck in her blood vessels, blocking the flow of oxygen. This causes inflammation and pain. If the vessels to the brain are blocked there is a risk of stroke. That is what has happened to Khiyah several times. Her strokes have left her with some mobility issues and slight residual speech issues.

To control her disease, Khiyah, who now lives in Flint, comes to Hurley’s Hematology Clinic once a month for an exchange transfusion. This procedure involves removing some of her own blood via a med port inserted in her chest. New, donor blood is administered. The goal is to remove enough of the sickle cells in Khiyah’s blood to help prevent further strokes. She and her mom spend several hours together each month during this procedure. It’s unpleasant, but Khiyah never complains.

Tiffany explains, “Khiyah understands that this disease is something she’s going to need to deal with for the rest of her life.

She has to learn to become independent and figure out how to live a full life in spite of her deficits. Khiyah and I are both aware of her limitations, but I don’t accept or give anything less than 100% in the efforts of us living our best lives!”

One of nine children, Khiyah is never at a loss for fun. Her favorite activities are reading, arts and crafts, watching movies, and playing with her dolls.

She loves school and wants to be an astronaut when she grows up!

Tiffany understands that many other African American children are faced with this same inherited disease. Her mission is to share Khiyah’s story and what they’ve learned about managing Sickle Cell. She wishes to reach as many people as possible with her message of hope and encouragement.

anuary 3, 2003, is the day that changed 15-year-old Chad Robson’s life forever. He and a Lapeer East hockey teammate were headed to practice. It was snowing and the roads were slushy. They started to slide when an oncoming car t-boned them on the passenger’s side where Chad sat.

Responders used the Jaws of Life to free Chad from the wreckage before he was transported to Hurley with extensive injuries.

The most life-threatening, immediate concern was the massive amount of blood that Chad was losing. He was bleeding in his abdomen from an injured spleen, from a major pelvic fracture, and from his right kidney, which was badly shattered.

Someone Chad’s size has 15-18 units of blood in his system. During the first 24 hours following his injuries, Chad needed 54 units of blood. Doctors and nurses in Hurley’s Pediatric ICU were in disbelief. With that tremendous amount of blood loss, there was no way Chad should survive. If he pulled through, it would be nothing short of a miracle. And that’s exactly what it was!

Chad spent six long weeks in Peds ICU. His parents were at his side 24/7. Friends, neighbors, and members of their church family helped out at home with Chad’s 8-year-old sister, Tori, and 12-year-old brother, Nathan. Their visits to Chad in Peds ICU were an important part of his recovery, but the traumatic experience took its toll on them as well.

time in Rehab was the night his coaches and teammates from Lapeer East came to the unit with their jerseys for the team photo. Instead of having it taken on the ice at the arena which is the tradition, the team decided they wouldn’t do it without Chad.

So, the team came to him! It was a moraleboosting night for Chad and his family.

Chad was finally released from Hurley after nearly eight weeks. He still had much work to do before he could return to school.

He began outpatient therapy at Hurley’s Linden Road facility, where he made great strides during his three-times-a-week visits.

As #24, Chad returned to school with his passion for hockey that continues to this day. He now enjoys playing adult hockey.

On July 19, 2014, he married his best friend, Stephanie, and a year later they welcomed their daughter, Raelyn, who was born at Hurley. Today, they live in North Branch.

Chad’s mom, Vicki, remains grateful. “We so appreciate everything that Hurley and the Children’s Miracle Network have done for us. The doctors and nurses were amazing and their efforts will always be remembered, from a single item like giving us a pillow or blanket, to the surgeons and doctors who gave our son back to us. One thing our family has always tried to do and to achieve through all of this is to just pay it forward to someone in need. As Chad always says, ‘Never give up!’ Above all, we thank God for each and every day.”

Chad was then transferred to Hurley’s inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit where he began physical and occupational therapy.

He lost 40 pounds while he was in Peds ICU and faced the daunting task of regaining his strength and ability. A highlight of his

Paige’s Playroom on the Pediatrics Unit was dedicated on September 19, 2006, in memory of three-year-old Paige Rutter who lost her battle with neuroblastoma.

Today, her spirit lives on in the laughter and giggles of young patients who experience play as good “medicine.”

XBOX GAME ROOM 2010

The Xbox Game Room on the Pediatrics Unit opened on June 21, 2010. This special space was a gift from Children’s Miracle Network and Microsoft for winning a six-week Microsoft online voting contest. The $10,000 prize was matched by “The Sheppy Dog Fund” (Dr. Alan Klein, Advisor). The room provides a treatment-free space for patients aged 10 and older.

REMEMBERING A GENTLE GIANT Wendell Quinn was a Hurley employee and CMN supporter for years. His gentle spirit touched people of all ages and all walks of life. He was loved by many miracle families. On April 19, 2020, our Hurley “family” suffered the loss of Wendell to COVID-19. What will never be lost is the lasting impression he made on countless young children who looked forward to seeing him not only at the hospital, but at CMN events like the annual Bowlathon. He is missed!

ybyl Award recipient, Sally Shaheen-Joseph of Mott Community College, was celebrated at the Sybyl Awards event hosted by the Hurley Foundation in December 2019. The award honors Sybyl Atwood’s legacy of community service, mentorism, kindness, and volunteerism. Sybyl worked tirelessly to make Genesee County a better place for its residents.

Jordan Brown, Director of Volunteer Services at the Hurley Foundation, advocated for the annual award to continue after it was slated to end in 2018. The Hurley Foundation now hosts the Sybyl award-- the only one in Genesee County that directly awards volunteerism.

Ms. Shaheen-Joseph was honored for her legal work that promoted women’s equal opportunities for education and employment. She volunteered at the YWCA, Mott Community College, the Michigan Women’s Foundation, Fair Winds Council of the Girl Scouts of America, and Burton Rotary Club.

Karen Church of ELGA Credit Union was also recognized.

She received the Sybyl Atwood Lifetime Award for her efforts in providing accessible mortgages to Flint residents. She donates her spare time and energy to religious and child-based nonprofits.

MISSION CRITICAL

DURING COVID-19

The Hurley Foundation’s Volunteer Corps was called on to staff a few “mission critical” volunteer service areas through the pandemic.

Although most volunteers were asked to stay home and quarantine in their homes in March, some volunteers maintained their service into the Spring. Ismael Guerra, high school senior, was the main volunteer in the Surgical Lounge during this time. Working an average of 4-5 days a week, Ismael maintained the opening and closing of

the Lounge to ensure that the small group of visitors had the comfort of knowing how their loved ones progressed through critical surgeries.

He quickly became a treasured team member to his counterparts in pre- and post-operative care.

Chaplains provided another critical service.

They conducted spiritual care calls for Hurley Departments via phone. The chaplain’s office was staffed every day and multiple calls were made to provide a level of comfort and care during a time where emotions were high and many were fearful.

The Volunteer Corps remains a vital part of Hurley’s operations, despite an unusual year.

TOYS FOR HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN

In December 2019, Rabbi JJ Hect II, President of Toys for Hospitalized Children in New York, along with the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, visited Hurley. They donated 30 bluetooth speakers, 30 tablets and 75 Hulu gift cards for teens in Hurley’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. They plan to donate 25 iPads and Echo Dots after Thanksgiving this year.

REESE’S PIECES OF JOY

Reese Vargo asked for donations so she and her sisters, Quinn and Avery, could deliver Christmas gifts to kids at Hurley. Reese had kidney cancer at 3 1/2 years old and went through chemotherapy at Hurley Children’s Hospital. She’s cancer-free today!

For the past three years, she and her family have donated toys and money to Hurley for her project, “Reese’s Pieces of Joy”—an inspiring example of “kids helping kids.”

n October 2019, Hurley Foundation unveiled the new Dr. R. Roderic Abbott Medical Education Center, located within the space in the hospital that was previously the Medical Library. Family, friends, and colleagues joined together for the special ribbon cutting and dedication. The center provides technology-enhanced rooms for trainings and conferences within the hospital, enhancing our vision to be leaders in transforming health through academic and clinical excellence and expanding access to innovative care.

In 2016, a group of Hurley medical staff, including Chair, Jitendra Katneni, MD; Khalid Ahmed, MD; Ghassan Bachuwa, MD; Brain Nolan, MD; Raouf Mikail, MD; Elmahdi Saeed, MD; Syed Sattar, MD; Harland Verrill, PhD; and Diane Welker, NP; created a fundraising committee to name the Medical Education Center after Dr. Abbott, a dedicated, selfless physician at Hurley who specialized in Internal Medicine and Hematology and Oncology for over 36 years

until he retired in 1998. He was an iconic figure, mentor, friend, and teacher to many within the community. He is remembered as a true humanitarian who advocated for doctors, nurses, and his patients and believed that every patient had the right to the best care possible, regardless of their ability to pay. He refused a salary from the hospital and donated patient payments back to Hurley. We are proud to continue Dr. R. Roderic Abbott’s legacy of compassion and giving.

The Dr. R. Roderic Abbott Medical Education Center consists of seven different rooms in which professional development opportunities can be hosted on Hurley’s main campus. The renovation was made possible through generous donations from community advocates as well as current and retired medical professionals who value continuing education. Donations to the Medical Education Center are still being accepted and will be recognized on the permanent display at the entrance.

BENEFIT BALL 2020

On Saturday, March 7, 2020, just a few short weeks before the first “Stay Home,Stay Safe” Executive Order due to COVID-19, Hurley supporters had a marvelous time at the 39th Hurley Benefit Ball. Food and entertainment from each continent were featured through the Ball’s theme, “World Showcase.” The evening included dancing, a caricaturist, and a Seven Wondrous raffle. Proceeds benefited Hurley Medical Center’s Mother/Baby and Labor & Delivery units.

On September 9, 2019 and September 14, 2020, the Hurley Foundation hosted its 35th and 36th Fall Golf Classic and changed courses from the Flint Golf Club to Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden. This location change was to branch out and showcase Hurley’s reach within Genesee County. Golfers loved the change of scenery, contests, entertainment, food, gifts, and prizes.

The 2020 event complied with appropriate safety precautions to ensure that it met Michigan’s COVID-19 guidelines. Each year, the Fall Golf Classic supports Hurley Medical Center’s Level 1 Trauma Center and Burn Unit, which provide the highest level of care 24/7. The total raised from the 2019 and 2020 events was $304,427.

NIGHT

On October 3, 2019, Hurley Medical Center, along with founding sponsor, Financial Plus Credit Union, hosted Pink Night Palooza at the Holiday Inn Gateway Centre. It was an evening full of passion, love, support, and fun with lots of pink! The event, along with different mini-events hosted by caring local businesses and groups, raised over $170,000.

In 2020, the event committee needed to think outside the box to host a first-ever, all-virtual event. This event became a reality on October 1, 2020. A private Pre-Pink Party featured emcee,

Chris Swanson, and comedian, Melissa Hager, followed by a live streaming by Mid-Michigan Now, with videos, a live auction, and the iconic bra-artistry fashion show.

Proceeds from Pink Palooza benefit Hurley’s Breast Cancer Navigation Program, which assists patients with bills and other expenses during treatment. The program takes care to another level, helping patients get through the toughest time of their lives.

TRAUMA RECOVERY CENTER: REACHING VICTIMS OF CRIME

H

urley’s Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) is beginning its fourth year of free services to victims of crimes, including domestic violence, elder abuse, gunshot wounds, and physical assault. A $659,372 grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and $5,500 from The Whiting Foundation fund the program.

It serves all ages, although most victims are between the ages of 12- 50.

TRC staff meet patients at their bedside to let them know their rights. They ask victims if they want law enforcement involvement and discuss safety plans.

Crime victims face hurdles of transportation and housing and the stigma of “What will people think of me?” They fear retaliation from reporting the crime. Many need to move for their safety.

After hospital discharge, TRC staff stay in touch until the crisis improves or the victim is stable. A Licensed Master Social Worker offers therapy services.

Whether providing therapy, accompanying victims to court hearings, filing personal protection orders or crime victim compensation applications, finding a safe place to live, helping with household bills or jobs, or arranging transportation to appointments, the TRC can help. This one-of-a-kind program has helped 1,241 crime victims move forward with their lives after a traumatic experience.

“Seeing a person’s eyes change from crisis to peace, even if for a moment, brings so much joy. Knowing that we helped someone in a crisis makes everything worth it,” said Tia Coles, Program Coordinator.

hortly after graduating from high school, Samantha was in a new relationship and expecting a baby. She was excited about having a baby, but nervous about pregnancy and parenthood. She heard about Nurse-Family Partnership® (NFP) from a girlfriend and signed up to have a free home visiting nurse from Hurley.

Through NFP, Samantha received education and guidance about what to expect during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and beyond. After her daughter was born, her nurse provided breastfeeding support and taught her about early language, parenting, and developmental milestones. The one-on-one support helped instill confidence and provided a cheering section for Samantha’s successes.

Since 2015, Hurley has been one of ten NFP programs operating in Michigan. The program is supported by grants of $985,000 from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and $54,700 from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. Each year, six nurses serve more than 300 mothers and infants.

Although face-to-face visits have been halted during COVID-19, Samantha’s nurse keeps in touch through video conference and phone. Diapers and developmental toys are delivered to Samantha’s front door.

Nurse-Family Partnership® is an evidence-based program that helps vulnerable mothers pregnant with their first child. Each mother receives home visits from a nurse from early in pregnancy through the baby’s second birthday.

Goals include decreased smoking rates, increased breastfeeding rates, decreased premature births, and up-to-date immunizations for infants. Parents are assisted with developing plans to continue their education and find work.

urley‘s Food FARMacy opened in 2017 to improve patient’s health conditions and address overwhelming food insecurity (i.e., inability to access enough healthy food). Physicians refer patients to receive a two-day supply of nutrient-dense foods for their households each month for six months. The focus is on children, seniors, and individuals with chronic conditions such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, and diabetes. To date, 2,400 unique patients and 7,200 households have received services.

The Food FARMacy offers locally grown produce, lean meat, eggs, low-fat dairy items, whole grains, and canned items without added salt or sugar. Patients are advised in choosing foods that best meet their nutritional needs. They are enrolled in Double Up Food Bucks and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In addition, the Financial Opportunity Center provides free coaching in personal finance and job hunting.

“Hunger is a family problem,” said Susanne Gunsorek, Registered Dietician and Program Coordinator. “Other food pantries in our area assist food insecure families, but we are different in that we use food to improve health outcomes. All ages benefit as the overall health and well-being of the family improves.”

Recent grants from The Community Foundation of Greater Flint ($50,000), Metabolic Studio and The Annenberg Foundation ($20,000), and The Children’s Foundation ($10,000), as well as funds from Kohl’s Cares ($9,397), UnitedHealthcare ($5,200), and Hurley, position the Food FARMacy to maximize its impact on patient health.

Alisa worked at her “dream job” as Administrator of Wellness and Population Health at Hurley from 2014-2020.

She was passionate about community health.

Due to her efforts, her vision of Hurley’s Food FARMacy became a reality when it opened in August 2017. It continues to serve increasing numbers of patients with food insecurity.

“Contagious enthusiasm,” “heartwarming smile,” “fun-loving,” and “energetic cheerleader” are but a few words that describe Alisa.

urley recently transformed a green space across from the hospital, near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Begole Street, into a park-like area with a paved walking path. The path has 10 adult exercise stations along it (e.g., calf stretch; hamstring/ quadriceps stretch; sit up, etc.).

The intent is to encourage outdoor exercise and recreation by hospital staff and community members.

Outdoor fitness spaces do not require gym memberships, can encourage camaraderie between

users, and are easily accessed.

Those who exercise outdoors report improved mental wellbeing and an increased likelihood of continuing regular exercise.

Hurley’s Wellness Path was conceived by Alisa Stewart, MS, and is dedicated to her. The project was made possible through the input from Alisa’s Wellness team at Hurley and the University Avenue Corridor Coalition, as well as contributions from Hurley, Community First, Roots & Wings, and Kettering University.

Sadly, this upbeat, loving mother of two passed away on March 24, 2020, as a result of an auto accident. As her life ended, she saved four other people with her Gift of Life organ donations.

Her tireless efforts on behalf of Hurley and the community we serve were never short of “Super.”

CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM CHILD LIFE SERVICES

The Carls Foundation awarded a grant of $32,928 for two new hearing screeners for Hurley Medical Center’s Birthing Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Child Life Specialists help keep children calm during medical procedures. They use distractions such as toys, Virtual Reality Goggles, iPad games, and medical play kits to lessen fear and anxiety. Thanks to a $4,860 grant from The Whiting Foundation, children undergoing outpatient echocardiograms to diagnose heart defects received Child Life services.

Over 3,300 newborns are screened for hearing loss each year at Hurley. All newborns must be tested before they leave the hospital. Detecting hearing impairment as soon as possible is critical. If not detected early, speech, language, and cognitive development are affected. The new handheld screeners offer results in minutes with minimal disturbance to the infants.

A transport incubator for babies was purchased with $15,000 from The Hougen Foundation. This self-contained, “intensive care unit on wheels” moves fragile infants from the Emergency Department or from Labor and Delivery to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It also takes babies to other units for procedures.

The goal was to avoid sedation during the 30-minute test in which the child must remain still. Sedations are costly, time consuming, and can cause undesirable side effects.

When Child Life Specialists interacted with the patients, echocardiograms were done faster and the scans were more readable.

Very few sedations were needed, resulting in happier patients and families.

Consistent air temperatures and humidity levels of 50-70% to minimize heat loss are essential to keep premature infants safe.

Displays on the incubator maintain babies’ skin and air temperatures. Over 700 babies admitted to Hurley’s NICU each year can benefit from this equipment.
