Hurley’s Employee of the Month for April, Kiara Harris, is the Health Unit Coordinator on 7 East where she has been since June 2021. Prior to that, she worked as a laboratory assistant. Her current role keeps her busy with a wide variety of responsibilities.

One of her primary tasks is ensuring visitors to the unit have a good experience. This includes answering phones as well as making sure she is greeting guests at the nursing station and helping them find the patient’s room. She also responds to call lights and relays messages to the nursing assistant or nurse, or if she can help the patient herself, she does. On top of all that, Kiara communicates with doctors’ offices to arrange consultations, makes sure the unit is stocked properly and acts as a runner if anyone needs something from another unit or sterile services.

“Working on the biggest unit in the hospital has its challenges, but my 7E team works together to get the job done for their patients.”

While Kiara says “the multitasking can feel overwhelming when the call light is going off, the phone is ringing and there are visitors at the desk all at once,” she also says that it is very rewarding.

She explains that “the best part is interacting with patients and visitors, making sure they have a great patient experience while they’re sick and have to be here.” This is not surprising, as her mother retired from Hurley almost three years ago

of the month after working here as an licensed practical nurse in virtual telemetry. “I learned a lot of compassion, empathy and patience from her and how to be a hard worker from both my mother and father,” she says. One of Kiara’s earliest and best memories from Hurley is driving up to the old ER entrance to drop off lunch to her mom.

Kiara got her start training and working as a phlebotomist in outreach before moving into the hospital. Her future goals include becoming an RN herself and eventually teaching in the nursing field. In her spare time, Kiara describes herself as a homebody, though she really enjoys traveling and hopes to be able to journey outside of the country again soon. When she is relaxing at home, she is a big fan of watching movies, especially Marvel and DC. Being named Employee of the Month was a huge shock, and she was speechless when she found out. She was called to a mandatory meeting but instead she was presented with the award with her coworkers in attendance. Kiara is still surprised, but she is honored by the nomination.

Kiara received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop, and a framed certificate. PEDIATRIC RECURRENT FEVERS:

beyond the basics On April 21st, the Hurley Healthy Living Series was hosted by Dr. Rafe’e with a talk titled “Pediatric Recurrent Fevers: Beyond the Basics.” Dr. Rafe’e is an infectious disease specialist and certified general pediatric hospitalist at Hurley Medical Center who specializes in determining what is making your child sick.

Dr. Rafe’e commonly consults other physicians Besides providing primary care services to his own patients, Dr. Rafe’e is commonly consulted by other community pediatrics and ER doctors in need of his diagnostic help. A common situation is a child with an unexplained fever, who is suspected of having an underlying infection or complication. These complications can take varying forms, from abscesses to multi-inflammatory symptoms. His unique combination of experience in the county, expertise as an infectious disease specialist, and the skills of a certified general pediatric hospitalist allow him to help provide the highest level of care for children across the state.

If your child is showing any of these symptoms…

While there are many symptoms that help reveal illness and the need to seek treatment, Dr. Rafe’e highlights fever as one of the main ones. Specifically, if your child has a fever for two days without good explanation, they need to see a doctor. Other symptoms that occur along with a fever can also help you recognize the need to seek treatment. These include not wanting to eat or drink, trouble breathing and acting lethargically.

Multi-Inflammatory Syndrome A newer issue that Dr. Rafe’e has observed is called Multi-inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C). MIS-C is often associated with COVID-19. It can occur within eight weeks of a child being exposed to the virus and is

not dependent on the child having the illness. It is considered a syndrome, which is a collection of symptoms (but not a disease) and happens when the body responds to late COVID. MIS-C affects organs and the symptoms can reflect the area of the body under stress. Because of this, there are many possible symptoms, including skin rashes, rapid breathing and fevers that last 24 hours or longer. The good news is that Dr. Rafe’e has experience in diagnosing and treating MIS-C and is able to help your child if the need arises.

Centered around family Dr. Rafe’e is able to provide a high quality of care to patients not only because of his expertise and experience but also because he works with an interdisciplinary team at Hurley to assess what patients need on an individual basis. He says that keeping treatment centered-around family allows for high quality of care.

Earth Day is celebrated yearly by people around the world to promote awareness for the health of our environment. Here at Hurley, we celebrate it annually with a Campus Clean Up. Staff volunteer their time to pick up debris accumulated throughout the long winter months to beautify and improve the health of our environment.

Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the renovation of the Emergency Department, this new endowment honors our frontline heroes who served our community during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

For those of you new to the workings of an endowment fund, these donations are invested and the interest earned will be added to the Emergency

In navigating the uncharted territory of COVID-19, clinicians and non­ clinical staff looked to the Director of Emergency Services and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Jaggi, as one of Hurley's guiding lights. We thank Dr. Jaggi for his leadership and continued service to Hurley Medical Center.

Charles Pumklin was a dedicated and beloved Physician's Assistant in Hurley Medical Center's Emergency Department. He was known for his passion of making a difference in people's lives by taking care of our patients and his "Hurley family." When Charles unexpectedly passed away he left a grief­s tricken team wanting to honor his legacy.

2022 hurley benefit ball recap On behalf of the Hurley Foundation, thank you to everyone who attended and sponsored the 41st Hurley Benefit Ball, which took place on Saturday, May 7th at Signature Chop House in Flushing.

We had a great turn out for this year’s event, which was focused on Hurley’s new 14-bed Adolescent Psychiatric Unit. This new Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Program will serve patients ages 12 through 17 with both medical and psychiatric needs right here in their own community.

Hurley has a full-service line of behavioral health offerings and is looking forward to furthering its investment and commitment to the care of our behavioral health patients and families.

The fundraising many Walmart and Sam’s Club associates do for CMN Hospitals is personal. They strive to make a difference for the children within their community. Costco Associates Give Hope to Hurley Kids during Midland Bowlathon On Saturday, May 14, more than 120 bowlers from team Costco enjoyed a night of bowling at Valley Lanes in Midland with their families and friends to support their local Children's Miracle Network Hospital: Hurley Children's Hospital.

We are inspired and energized by the good work happening at our Costco location in Midland and we are so grateful to everyone who supported this event and who worked so hard during their fundraising campaign for Hurley kids in the month of May.

REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL The continuing education requirements apply to every physician renewing a Michigan medical license who has been licensed in the 3-year period immediately preceding the application for renewal. Surgical Documentation Tip o’ the Month ~or~ How to Survive the Government Documentation Rules Be careful using the term “Acute Coronary Syndrome” The Federal Government has enough regulations to handcuff any coder and significantly impair his or her ability to properly demonstrate how sick our patients really are.

Here’s what you already know: According to the American College of Cardiology (https://www.acc.org), "Acute coronary syndrome is a medical term used to describe problems that occur when there isn’t enough blood flow to the heart.”

“Acute Coronary Syndrome” is an umbrella term for the following conditions: Unstable angina Non-ST segment elevation MI ST elevation MI Here’s what you may not know: In the coding world, “Acute Coronary Syndrome” codes to acute ischemic heart disease, unspecified. Other terms under syndrome, coronary include insufficiency or intermediate (which codes to unstable angina) and slow flow (which codes to other forms of angina).

So in cases where the patient actually has an infarct but we use the term “acute coronary syndrome” without being more specific, the coder can code acute ischemic heart disease unspecified, even if the patient did indeed have a STEMI or NSTEMI! Therefore: Always indicate whether or not a myocardial infarction occurred in your patient with “Acute Coronary Syndrome.” Furthermore, if it is a STEMI, do yourself and the coder a favor (i.e. avoid a query) by stating the area of the heart affected (e.g. “anterolateral MI” instead of merely “STEMI”).

Let’s take two otherwise identical cases. Both patients presented with a non-ST segment elevated myocardial infarction complicated by atrial flutter. Evaluation and treatment were the same.

The only difference?

The first physician wrote “Acute coronary syndrome with atrial flutter” in his notes and discharge summary.

The second wrote “Acute coronary syndrome – Non-ST segment elevation MI with atrial flutter” in hers, and so she has more accurately shown the severity of the patient’s illness and earns a little more time to ensure that her patient is well monitored and treated before discharge.
