TRAVIS SENK Hurley’s Employee of the Month for May is Travis Senk, an IT Solution Delivery Coordinator. Travis has been at Hurley for three years in the IT Department. The IT Department is typically staffed with anywhere between 80 and 100 employees, and each of them wear multiple hats. Travis is no exception, as he is involved with multiple teams with different responsibilities, including Epic Reporting (focused in Hospital Billing and Finance), Cogito Systems Administration (Databases), SD+ Administration (the ticketing system), and the Project Management Team. How the IT Department works together is a big motivator for Travis. He explains, “I look forward to work each day. I really like the team, and everyone is great to work with. My favorite part of the day is the morning huddle to go over goals and initiatives. It’s really cool to see everyone working toward the same goal, even with multiple teams involved. They’re an amazing group of people to work with, who can always rally and get through any challenge.” Travis originally earned a bachelor’s in economics with the intention of attending law school. Along the way, in college, he was working in IT. After college, though, Travis realized he did not want to be a lawyer and that IT work was much more appealing to him. He earned the Network+ and Security+ certifications to help advance his career. He chose to work at Hurley because it was a good opportunity to specialize in reporting technology. His favorite parts of the job are that he gets to help people, solve puzzles, and constantly gets to learn new things. He explains, “I’m

never done learning. Technology is always changing, so I have to learn new things on the fly. I also enjoy the structured nature of the learning, and how it’s governed by specialty.” Being named Employee of the Month surprised him, as the nature of the IT Department is more team based. As he says, “It came as a complete shock. Normally I have something to say, but not then. I hope I thanked everyone. It took me pretty off guard.” The news came out when Melany Gavulic joined his department’s morning huddle. Even then, he assumed there was just an announcement, and not one about himself. When not working at Hurley, he enjoys playing with his kids. He and his wife Deneice have been married for ten years, and they have two daughters, Annabelle and Daisy. He’s also a big fan of street hockey and wallyball (a fast-paced sport that is similar to volleyball played in a racquetball court), and loves coffee, podcasts and board games.

RACHEL JONES, RN, BSN
Each year during Nurses Week, the Sue Wright Nursing Award is given to an exemplary employee to celebrate their outstanding level of patient care and dedication. The award was established in memory of Sue Wright, Hurley’s former Vice President of Nursing. The Nurses Week Committee chose this year’s winner, Rachel Jones, from a pool of deserved nominees. Rachel has been at Hurley for eight years, and spent each year on 7 East. She is currently the Assistant Nurse Manager. While she assists with scheduling and supports other nurses with their assignments, she spends most of her time helping to put out fires throughout the day so they do not become overwhelming. To her, that is the best part about her job. She explains, “I love being able to be a resource for my coworkers. I think most of them know they can come to me for anything, ask any questions. I’m happy to be that resource for them.” When she first started studying as a nurse, she thought she wanted to go into pediatrics. Hurley’s reputation as a destination for high-level pediatric care is what originally drew Rachel to Hurley, and she did some of her clinicals here while in nursing school. When hired, she was placed on 7 East and loved working on that floor, even with the challenges of working on a general medicine and surgical floor. As Rachel points out, “There is a very high turnover as nurses move on to more
14 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER
nursing award 2022 specialized units, and we get every type of patient. We have all of it, so it’s a lot to juggle. Even though it can be a tough job, my coworkers are what get me to stay. Everyone is so motivated to work. It's such a great team to work with.” Besides her team, empathy is Rachel’s other big motivator. She explains that, “In my job I try to put myself in the patients’ shoes and try to understand where they are coming from. They’re going through something new and traumatic. As long as I know that I've done everything I can for my patient, that's all I try to do, advocate for them in some way. The thanks I get from them is all I need from this job.” Rachel also thinks her support system outside of the hospital is indispensable. She wants to thank her husband, Chris Jones, for always being there for her. Her parents, Ron and Beth Struck, have also been a big help being flexible with their own schedules and helping with the kids when her work obligations kept her at the hospital. Her mom actually stood in for her at the awards ceremony, as Rachel was away on a rare vacation at the time. Beth only knew that Rachel was nominated, and was shocked when the presenter called Rachel’s name as the winner. Beth called her after the ceremony and was so excited she framed the award. Congratulations to Rachel and all the nominees!

During the Hurley Healthy Living Series Spine Time: Treatment for Back & Neck Issues, Dr. Marc Moisi was able to respond live to many of the questions submitted by viewers. Here are some highlights from that virtual event. Do pinched nerves require surgery? Pinched nerves can be for various different reasons. It could be from a herniated disc, arthritis, or bone shifts or bone spurs. The goal is to try to avoid a surgical intervention, whether you’ve had one before or you haven’t had one. There are a multitude of exercises, and that’s why I like evaluating my patients, even if they don’t need surgery. I operate on less than 10% of my clinic and 80% of patients get better on their own with all these different conservative therapy modalities.
Do you suggest seeing a chiropractor? I work very closely with my chiropractic colleagues. I think you need to be evaluated by both a spine surgeon as well as a chiropractor. I don’t make the chiropractic plans, I just determine if it’s safe. There are certain ailments where it would be less recommended, but all others are fine.
Is yoga okay for sciatic nerve pain? 100%. Yoga, and if you’re really motivated, Pilates, really help to improve your strengthening abilities. Learning how to do planks daily in the correct fashion is a very simple way to build core strength easily in your own house.
Do you have any suggestions for golfers experiencing back pain? Core strengthening. When it comes to spine care, the one thing, especially when you have an injured back, we

say no bending, lifting, and twisting (or BLT). Golfing combines all three in one move. If you can move your core with good mobility and agility and its strong enough to maintain your biomechanical motions you should be fine. But if you have a weaker core, you need to be careful, especially if you’ve had a previous injury.
Can leg pain be related to neck pain? Radiculopathy – it can be going down your arms or going down your legs. If you’ve had a neck surgery, that was more specialized for your arm pain or if you had leg weakness. If you’re having leg pain after surgery, you may need to be evaluated for your lower back and we may have to individualize your treatment for strengthening your lower back and at least determining what’s going on.
What are the treatments for osteoporosis? We normally incorporate my endocrine and internal medicine colleagues. First you would need a scan that looks at your bone quality and after that you may require some medications. The important thing is trying to avoid surgery when you’re at your worst because that could lead to a domino effect.
Are certain procedures better for scoliosis? (June is scoliosis month) It could be the type you have as a kid that could potentially get worse, which is different box than scoliosis as an adult. A lot of times as an adult, there are

treatment options that are nonsurgical, and if it is surgical, you don’t necessarily have to correct it all. Different treatments include conservative management with lengthening procedures, stretches procedures. And if an individual is not having problems, there’s really no reason to pursue it at this time.
Do other health problems, like heart issues, or being elderly, limit your choices? In a way it does in terms of surgery, but we’re trying to avoid a surgical intervention if we can. It doesn’t matter what your other ailments are, we will try to find the best path and treatment plan that’s individualized to each person. That’s one of the things that we pride ourselves on – that we do individualize it by figuring out what the best outcomes are and what their life goals are.

Getting your core as strong as possible, working out, and doing the appropriate stretches, will hopefully at least help with the pain even if it doesn’t necessarily help with the progression of the arthritis. We want to at least try to slow it down so you’re living your best days ever.

DR. NKECHI ONWUZURIKE & DR. ALLISON SCHNEPP
Dr. Nkechi Onwuzurike and Dr. Allison Schnepp are Hurley’s Pediatric Specialists Spotlight for May 2022. Both are certified in pediatrics, as well as hematology and oncology. So while they can treat any pediatric patient for a wide variety of issues, they specialize in caring for those with cancer and blood disorders.

They’ve designed the treatment protocol that is the standard, so it doesn’t matter where the child goes, the care is the same across all institutions that participate.” As part of the Children’s Oncology Group, Hurley is the destination for referrals from all over Genesee and Saginaw counties.
Both doctors have long histories with Hurley. Dr. Onwuzurike has been at Hurley since 1996. Besides caring for patients, she is also involved in resident education, teaching during pediatric rotations and serving as a mentor for residents. Dr. Schnepp has worked as a doctor at Hurley for two years this August and spent three years here as a resident and two years during medical school.
Besides providing the best evidence-based treatment protocols, the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic at Hurley is supported by a dedicated staff including full-time nurses that are chemo certified, as well as a social worker. This allows for a high level of comprehensive patient care that goes beyond clinical excellence. As Dr. Schnepp explains, “Another strength of our clinic is that it’s still small and focused enough that patients get personalized care, and we get to know patients and their family very well. Our clinic also coexists in the same space with the pediatric infusion center, so patients are able to get all their infusions at the same clinic.”
While they see patients all over the hospital, they also run the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic. Patients are referred there from the emergency department or their primary care providers for medical issues including leukemia, sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders, and anemia. Leukemia is the most common cancer found in pediatric patients. Signs to watch out for include extreme fatigue, a fever that does not respond to fever reducers like Tylenol, and an inability to play. Primary care doctors can help spot these conditions and give referrals for further examination in the clinic. Once at the clinic, patients receive specialized care that is informed by and held to the highest standards. Dr. Onwuzurike explains that “our clinic is part of the Children's Oncology Group, a group of nurses and doctors who care for kids with cancer in the

of the month Hurley’s Volunteer of the Month for June is Sheryl Deutsch. She has been volunteering at Hurley since 2013. She got her start with Health Education, working on smoking cessation and other outside events. Since then, she has spent time in Wellness Services and the Food FARMacy. In the fall of 2021, Sheryl started volunteering a set schedule of one day per week. That schedule includes a variety of postings, from pre-admission testing to the gift shop. She floats around and helps out wherever she is needed. Before volunteering at Hurley, Sheryl built a career that lasted over twenty five years as a pharmaceutical representative for Johnson & Johnson. She moved to the Flint area in 1985 where she met her husband, and Flint became her home. It was her career that first brought her to Hurley. "I love Hurley Hospital. They welcomed me 35 years ago as a pharmaceutical rep. I have always wanted to give back to Hurley in some way. Hurley really felt like home. People would light up and shout ‘Hey Sheryl!’ when they saw me in the hallways.”

Volunteering at Hurley is not Sheryl’s first foray into serving her community. The philosophy at Johnson & Johnson emphasized honoring nurses and doctors, as well as the communities that they serve. This outlook has always resonated with her and influenced her life outside of work. Fast forward to now where Sheryl is currently the President of the Flint Jewish Federation. This organization focuses on services to seniors, among many other philanthropic endeavors. As the Social Action chair of Temple Beth El for over 20 years, she has organized food drives for the Food Bank, spearheaded groups of people to work Easter Sunday at the North End Soup Kitchen, and led numerous Christmas gift drives to bring added cheer to vulnerable children during the holidays, among other projects that served the community. Sheryl also adds sincere thanks to Mike Burnett for giving her the opportunity to sit on the Genesee Community Health Center Board from 2015-2018. That opportunity led to a connection at Genesee Health System (CMH) where she was instrumental in developing and implementing a tobacco treatment and education program in 2019. And, a second career was launched in the process! In her free time, Sheryl loves Michigan in the summer and Florida in the winter. Her dream is to become a ‘snowbird’. She also likes to read, go for walks, and visit art fairs throughout the state.

A New Spin on an Old Favorite Makes: 8 Servings Enjoy this gorgeous, bright, green pesto on your favorite protein or pasta. Ingredients • 1 cup peas (fresh or frozen, thawed) •
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 cup basil leaves
•
1 cup spinach (fresh or frozen, thawed)
•
1/2 cup walnuts
•
2 cloves garlic
•
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
•
1/4 cup water
•
1/4 teaspoon salt
•
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Directions 1. Add peas, Parmesan cheese, basil, spinach, walnuts and garlic into a food processor or blender. 2. Add in water, oil, salt and pepper. Blend until the ingredients are combined to form a thick sauce.

physician connection New Implicit Bias Training Requirement The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) will require Implicit Bias Training for physicians (and other health care professionals), effective June 1, 2022. The requirements apply to both new applicants as well as those renewing their existing licenses or registrations. An applicant for license renewal shall have completed a minimum of 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of the applicant’s license or registration cycle. An applicant for new licensure, both limited and medical, shall have completed a minimum of 2 hours of implicit bias training within the 5 years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration. Please note, the implicit bias training for licensure must “provide opportunities for interaction among participants and with the instructor” to meet LARA requirements For more information on the Implicit Bias requirement and any other issues regarding physician licensing, please visit: michigan.gov/lara
Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) Implicit Bias Course The MSMS Foundation worked with state-wide experts in diversity and equity on a brandnew two-part monthly series, titled, “Reducing Unconscious Bias - an Imperative (RUBI): Foundation and Impacts on Patient Care,” which includes a one-hour on-demand video followed by a half-hour live webinar. When registering, attendees will need to select one of the following dates for Part 2 and the corresponding Part 1 on-demand webinar. The live virtual sessions will take place from 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. ET. •

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR MICHIGAN MEDICAL DOCTORS Authority: Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended
REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL The continuing education requirements apply to every physician renewing a Michigan medical license who has been licensed in the 3-year period immediately preceding the application for renewal. The requirements apply whether or not the physician is actively engaged in the practice of medicine. No one, including medical school faculty and resident physicians, is exempt from this requirement. Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the Board of Medicine, of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs. A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

In Memoriam: Fikria B. El Amrousy Hassan, MD (July 9, 1934 to May 24, 2022) It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the loss of Fikria El Amrousy Hassan, MD who passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. She was an Allergy & Immunology physician at Hurley Medical Center for more than 40 years. Dr. Hassan graduated at the top of her class at Cairo University School of Medicine in 1959, where she met her husband of 61 years, Shawky A. Hassan, MD. Dr. Hassan joined the Medical Staff of Hurley on March 31, 1972 after completion of training at Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Michigan. Dr. Fikria El Amrousy Hassan was certified by the American Board of
