An essential function of Human Resources is to maintain accurate and up-to-date employee information and to safeguard employee information in a confidential manner.

We rely on employees to report changes or corrections to their personal information in a timely fashion. Personal information collected by Hurley Medical Center can include, but is not limited to, employee names, home addresses, telephone numbers, personal (non-Hurley) e-mail addresses and emergency contacts.

Employees are expected to keep their personal information up to date. Employees can update their personal information in OASIS/Employee Space. OASIS, the system of record for employee information, intersects Human Resources and Information Technology and allows HR processes to occur electronically and integrates with other systems utilized by the medical center. Keeping your employee information current is the best way to ensure you receive important communications from the medical center.

NAME CHANGES. To submit a Name Change, log in to OASIS and click on “My Profile,” then click the “Change Name” button on the toolbar and complete the form. The request is submitted electronically to Human Resources for review and approval. You must provide an updated Social Security card with your new name, as required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Before we can change an employee’s name in the system, a legal document of the name change, such as marriage certificate or divorce decree, must be provided. You can attach a PDF of the document to your request, or deliver it to the HR Service Center or Employee Drop Box located on the 6th Floor of the School of Nursing Building.

Employees whose position requires a license, registration or certification are responsible for changing their name with the governing entity for that credential. Human Resources will validate the change through the primary source verification process.

Per the Board Bylaws, the purpose of the Governance & Compliance Committee is to consider policy matters concerning all Hurley Medical Center corporate relationships and entities, all matters in any way pertaining to the governance and coordination of such entities, the Corporate Compliance Program, professional liability oversight, settlement authority and matters related to self-insurance, all Board development activities, conduct the Board Self Evaluation, and review the provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws of the Board and make recommendations, if appropriate, for amendments thereto.

Mr. Caya was appointed to the Hurley Board of Managers in May 2014 and was reappointed to a second term in 2019.

He served two terms as Board Chair in 2019 and 2020. In June of 2018, Mr. Caya graduated from the Michigan Hospital Association’s Excellence in Governance Fellowship, a one-year educational program designed specifically for hospital Board members. Mr. Caya is a social entrepreneur who has launched and operated both forprofit and not-for-profit businesses. Notably, he is one of the owners of Tenacity Brewing, which is just down the street. Mr. Caya has been happily married for 3 wonderful months to his wife, Anna.

When asked about serving in a leadership position on the Hurley Board, Mr. Caya stated “Serving in a leadership role has been a wonderful experience and I have tried my best to rise to the occasion. Our board has a rich history of outstanding leadership and I'm thankful that I have had the opportunity to follow in their footsteps."

In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board. Given that many of our Board members have served multiple fiveyear terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter.

Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. This month we will feature Jason Caya, Chair of the Board Governance & Compliance Committee and Chair of the Board Audit Committee.

Helen Boaz, our June Employee of the Month, is extremely dedicated to the important role she plays in Sterile Processing. She holds the position of Lead Sterile Processor and can perform all responsibilities required in her area. Her primary responsibility is to fill requests received from the OR and all other areas within the Medical Center. She explained that the biggest responsibility within the department is meeting deadlines. Helen noted, “You have to be mindful of time management, knowing when the deadline is and meeting it. This is essential, as the patient’s care relies heavily on our meeting that deadline.”

“Everyone in our department always pulls together to meet the deadline regardless of who is working or what responsibilities they are fulfilling. If there is an emergency case that requires surgical instruments, it is essential that you have a team who works together. In Sterile Processing, we are very fortunate to have that team. At the end of the day, we are all here for the patient,” Helen remarks.

Helen attended Baker College initially pursuing a degree for Surgical Technician but decided on Sterile Processing. Needless to say it was difficult attending school, working a full-time job, having two small children at home and pregnant with her third child. She completed her degree at Baker and interned here at Hurley for 15 weeks. Subsequent to completing her internship, she applied for a Sterile Processing position, was interviewed and hired. She has been an employee at

of the month Hurley for 20 years beginning her career on May 1, 2001.

Helen could not believe that she was selected as Employee of the Month. “I am so grateful to have been nominated. Melany Gavulic and Amy Benko made the announcement. I was so surprised and appreciative. I have the support of my entire department. I appreciate Laura Henry, our Operations Supervisor, and Mitra Tewari, our Manager.”

When Helen is not working hard at Hurley to ensure that departments receive what they need for patient care, she is caring for two of her three grandchildren. Helen is grateful for the children, as it gives her wonderful things to do with her time.

Helen received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate.

CAMP EASY BREATHERS Hurley along with Genesee County Asthma Network hosted Camp Easy Breathers at the YMCA Camp Copneconic giving kids with asthma a fun camp experience! At Camp Easy Breathers, kids took part in adventures like swimming, canoeing, archery, climbing, hiking and arts and crafts. Parents could be at ease knowing there was an on-site wellness center equipped with treatment and exam rooms, a pharmacy and other details to ensure quick medical care in the event a child's asthma was triggered.

CAMP MOVE IT The YMCA and Hurley Wellness Services partnered to give kids a week of wellness activities at the YMCA Camp Copneconic! During the Wellness week, kids took part in activities, such as planting, creating glitter jars, an infused water project and “Kid Chef” wellness cooking. “We love teaching activities that increase a child’s knowledge about personal wellness. These are positive skills they can incorporate in their daily lives!

INTRODUCTION

LUNG SCREENING

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, for both men and women, resulting in more than 150,000 deaths each year in the United States. In fact, lung cancer kills more people than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Like any cancer, early detection is key and allows for better outcomes.

Computerized tomography (CT) screening uses special X-Ray technology to obtain image data from different angles around the body and then uses computer processing for the information to show a cross section of body tissues and organs. LDCT is quick and easy and results in a minimal amount of radiation exposure. The exam takes about 60 seconds.

HURLEY LUNG CENTER The Hurley Lung Center consists of a team of boardcertified specialists: radiologists, pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons and pathologists. The Hurley Lung Center uses state-of-the-art technology allowing better diagnosis and treatment of lung disease.

L U N G H E A LT H N AV I G AT O R Hurley’s Lung Health Navigator, Kevin Reynolds, coordinates Hurley’s Lung Screening Program. This includes reviewing daily radiology reports and notifying the patient’s providers of irregular findings.

Kevin also tracks incidental lung nodules on all X-rays and CT scans performed at Hurley. Kevin works closely with Hurley’s team of physicians to streamline the process of early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer, working to achieve better patient outcomes.

Kevin works with patients offering them education and resources on how and where to follow up with Hurley’s specialists. He works with patients diagnosed with COPD assisting in educating them on their disease. LDCT LUNG SCREENING The goal of LDCT lung screening is to save lives.

Without LDCT lung screening, lung cancer is usually not found until a person develops symptoms, which may cause the cancer to be more difficult to treat.

Lung screening has quickly become a success in early detection of lung cancer and LDCT has vastly improved patient survival rates. Early diagnosis can be achieved up to 85% of the time in screen-detected lung cancers. Among those early-stage cancers, the cure rate approaches 80%.

June’s Volunteer of the Month is Dulce Tlahuel-Varela. Dulce is a volunteer for the Hurley Foundation who is primarily assigned to the Surgical Lounge. She is responsible for registering the patient’s family, providing updates on the loved one’s condition, as well as providing additional assistance—checking on the family, offering them coffee, providing directions to other areas within the hospital.

When asked how she feels about volunteering at Hurley, Dulce commented, “I am proud to volunteer and represent Hurley. I enjoy helping the families with their experience and updating them about their loved one. I appreciate how we are all contributing to making Hurley successful and helping the family.”

hurley receives recognition for superior As a leader in clinical care and education, Hurley Medical Center recently received two accreditations for excellent senior care. The American College of Emergency Physicians recognized Hurley as a Bronze-Standard, Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department through the Geriatric Emergency Department accreditation (GEDA) program. This recognition is a testament to Hurley’s mission of improving patient outcomes by providing standardized approaches to care that address common geriatric issues. It also enhances Hurley’s reputation for providing excellent care to older adults.

That rings true to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and its partners, the John A. Hartford Foundation, American Hospital Association and Catholic Health Association of the United States, who recently recognized Hurley as an Age-Friendly Health System Committed to care Excellence. This designation identified Hurley as an exemplar in the movement to improve the health and health care of older adults. To facilitate such goals, the AgeFriendly Health Systems initiative is based on a series of practices focused on addressing four essential elements of care for older patients:

W H A T M A T T E R S : Know and align care The GEDA program is voluntary and includes three levels, similar to trauma center designations. It was developed by leaders in emergency medicine to ensure the older members of communities receive well-coordinated quality care at the appropriate level at every ED encounter. Specific criteria and goals are provided for emergency clinicians and administrators to target in a process that consists of more than two dozen best practices for geriatric care. A Level 3 emergency department must incorporate many of these best practices, as well as provide interdisciplinary geriatric education and have geriatric –friendly equipment and supplies available. The Level 3 designation also means that Hurley ensures optimal transitions of care from the ED to other settings, such as inpatient care, home or long-term care.

Hurley’s commitment to providing optimal care to older adults is evidenced not only by these recent awards, but also by its status as the area’s only Senior Center of Excellence, which means they provide the extra layer of care and safety seniors need—like offering a bone health program and Fast-Track ER for patients 65 and older. In addition, Hurley is the only NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) hospital in the region. NICHE is an international organization out of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU that awards different levels of excellence based on nursing care.

Social wellness refers to the relationships we have and how we interact with others. Our relationships can contribute to a sense of belonging and provide us with a support system, which is important for optimal wellness. Social wellness involves building healthy, nurturing and supportive relationships as well as fostering a genuine connection with those around you.

Social isolation, or being alone, doesn’t always mean you feel lonely. In fact, some people who are surrounded by family and friends feel lonely; others who live and work alone don’t feel lonely at all. Loneliness has been defined as the discrepancy between one’s desired and actual level of social connection. That means that if being alone doesn’t bother us, we aren’t lonely; only when we notice the lack of social connection do we feel the stress of loneliness.

Feelings of loneliness are very real. The health risks associated with loneliness are real, too. Social isolation and loneliness contributes to anxiety, depression, sedentary behavior, overeating and other risk factors for chronic disease and death.

Respond to feeling isolated or lonely as you would to other physical needs, such as hunger, thirst or pain. Make changes in your lifestyle and behaviors to create opportunities for social engagement.

MAKE CONNECTIONS Since social interactions have been found to enhance well-being, it’s helpful to work on making meaningful connections with your friends, family, romantic partners or others in your life. You could also make new connections by joining an exercise group or taking a cooking class.

2 . B U I L D H E A LT H Y R E L AT I O N S H I P S Once you have made connections, you will need to nurture those relationships over time. Strong bonds are an essential component of total well-being. Put effort into learning ways to improve the relationships you have and build your support network. Conflict management, setting boundaries, communication skills, assertiveness, respect for others and the ability to balance your time between social and personal needs are also parts of maintaining healthy relationships.

In other words, much of social wellness is learned behavior, and we can all improve on these skills to foster our social well-being.

Even though building bonds takes work, a social support network has considerable benefits. These positive relationships are what helps make the good times better and the tough times easier.

3. GET ACTIVE TOGETHER After developing relationships, you can make the most of them by getting active together. Disconnect from technology and join a book club, try group activities like a sport or get more involved at your church.

You and your friends could go for a walk as a group or make a healthy meal to eat. By becoming more active, you will improve both your physical and mental health.
