July’s Employee of the Month is Jessica Clark.

Jessica has been at Hurley for 16 years. Jessica graduated from University of Michigan-Flint, worked as an extern in Hurley’s NICU and has been there ever since. Jessica noted after going through her clinicals, she knew she wanted to stay. She selected NICU and fell in love immediately. “I have been here so long that I feel I can pass the knowledge and experiences I have gained to students and externs helping them while they learn to care for Hurley’s smallest patients.”

I can't even imagine the pain the parents must be feeling to have their child in our NICU. When they are at their greatest moment of weakness or need, I know I need to stay strong and be a source of comfort and support.

Jessica was so surprised to be nominated for Employee of the Month. “I am grateful to my coworkers. This is my family away from home.

Everyone from my coworkers to management, to the physicians, respiratory therapy, to environmental services and all others at Hurley, we are so close here. I also have a husband and two sons who give me extra hugs when I have a hard day.”

Jessica may take care of two to three patients at a time, depending on how critical they are. She also assists the moms with breast feeding and providing “kangaroo care.” Jessica stressed that building a rapport with the mom and earning their trust is so crucial. REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the board of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs.

Hebert legacy to continue after retirement Dr. Hebert’s family and friends hosted a surprise celebration party (with pandemic limitations) at the Flint Farmers’ Market on June 14, 2021.

Dr. Hebert’s life journey has included many professional accomplishments, the joys of parenting four children (Nicole, Tiffany, Sean, and Brian) with his wife Nelda and lots of international travel with tales to tell about penguins in Australia, mountains in India, fjords in Norway – and a list of more destinations he hopes to experience during retirement.

John Hebert III MD had been saying for a few years, “I’m going to retire one of these days – I don’t know when, but it’s going to happen.”

And then, on June 30, 2021, it happened. The obstetrician-gynecologist retired as program director of the Hurley Ob-Gyn Residency Training Program after 23 years in that capacity, though his role as an attending physician and faculty member continues through the end of August 2021. He leaves quite a legacy – one that his colleagues plan to bolster by raising money to name the Hurley Labor & Delivery Unit after him.

He has had a large impact on Hurley, the community, the residents and medical students he has trained, so the naming project is well worth the effort, according to members of the fund-raising committee.

“Dr Hebert has provided tremendous strength and stability for both the residency program and the Ob/ Gyn Department as a whole,” said Associate Program Director Jay Holmes MD. “He continues to be a valued mentor for many of his graduates.”

Here’s a quick run-down of prior steps in his path: After Dr Hebert graduated from Hurley Medical Center’s Ob-Gyn Residency Program in 1979, he served in the U.S. Army, first as captain, then as major, during which time he also worked as chair of the ObGyn Dept. at the U.S. Army Hospital in Bremerhaven, Germany. That gave him plenty of practice for when he eventually chaired the Hurley Ob-Gyn Dept., a stint that lasted 25 years. He eventually helmed the Ob-Gyn Residency Program and received multiple teaching awards, the medical center’s Pinnacle Award, the Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellow award, and more.

Through his community involvement, he has helped to improve the lives of many in the Flint area, as well.

And then there are the 74 Hurley Ob-Gyn residents who graduated while Dr. Hebert was program director. Their accomplishments continue to be a testament to Dr. Hebert’s leadership.

The $250,000 fund-raising campaign to upgrade the Hurley Labor & Delivery Unit and name it after Dr. Hebert launched in June. As of August 16, $28,205 had been raised.

Local florists and volunteers delivered more than 30,000 Teleflora's Be Happy® Bouquets to deserving people during “Make Someone Smile Week.” For years, Teleflora has donated these iconic yellow mugs to thousands of participating florists nationwide, including our very own Bovan Floral Group. To make the bouquets complete, the Bovan team has donated their time and talents to put together this beautiful donation. The Central Michigan University quarterback, John Keller, who was shot at an off-campus party last month was discharged from Hurley Medical Center on Friday, according to his father and later confirmed by the university.

"Things we've seen as parents, you never want to see in the hospital. Luckily John

probably won't remember a lot of it, but as parents, we saw things you never want to see." -Ray Keller, John's father

John Keller was in Hurley since the early morning hours of April 24 and was initially listed in "serious" and "critical" condition after being shot in the chest.

He was taken off a ventilator early this month, and was sitting up and smiling for pictures Friday.

A month ago, his parents, Ray and Maria, were unsure if their son would ever return home.

"John is headed home today!" John's father, Ray, wrote on Twitter on Friday. "God is great! Thank you to (Hurley Medical Center) trauma team for saving his life and the amazing care!"

July’s volunteer of the month is Kathleen Russell.

Kathleen volunteers for the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP). HELP is a program at Hurley designed for hospitalized patients to prevent delirium and functional decline. HELP works to assist with returning older adults to their homes or previous living situations with maintained or improved ability to function. It provides a human factor that has been found to benefit the patient. As a HELP volunteer, Kathleen received special training to assist with the needs of elderly patients, including: meal time assistance, mobility and range of motion exercises and therapeutic activities, such as art, games and music therapy.

Kathleen has an abundance of work and school experience and is even the Hurley Volunteer Steering Committee Chair. She has a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration and worked for General Dynamics for 21 years. She grew up in the Flint area, living in Mt. Morris, attending Powers High School and knew Hurley was the place where she could give back as a volunteer.

She learned about HELP, which at the time was a new program, and while waiting to take the HELP training, worked in the surgical lounge.

She credits working in the surgical lounge as providing excellent experience.

“The people here are spectacular. You can tell that volunteers are appreciated. The satisfaction I feel when you know that you have helped or made a difference, is wonderful. Just being here to be that human contact and to assist someone who needs it, is very rewarding. You do not volunteer because of the results you get, you do it for what you can give,” Kathleen said.

“There are so many different opportunities available at Hurley through the Volunteer Program. You can choose whatever fits your skill set, your schedule, your interest—from working in an office to holding babies. You can work in the Lobby Shop, the surgical lounge, the Cath Lab. The Volunteer Program is amazing, and I would highly recommend volunteering here,” noted Kathleen.

When Kathleen is not volunteering, she and her husband bicycle, hike and kayak. She enjoys gardening, cares for honey bees and raises chickens for eggs.

Kathleen has a tenacious personality that is infectious! She will help out in just about any department that needs an extra set of hands, which makes her a natural fit to chair the Volunteer Corps Steering Committee. She has a servant heart and is always able and willing to help. She was one of the very first volunteers in the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) upon its inception and has become a staple in the Surgical Lounge as well. I can always count on Kathleen to be one of our many trusted and reliable members of our Volunteer Corps.

caregiving 101 Hurley hosted a live healthy living event on Thursday, July 29, discussing the importance of caregiving and teaching the basic necessities of how to keep your loved ones moving. Viewers at home tuned in for a demonstration on proper caregiving techniques, followed by a live discussion with Tristam Cumming RN, BSN, CRRN, and Stacie Abraham RN-BC, GRN.

I M P O R TA N T C A R E G I V E R S K I L L S Keeping your loved ones safe, happy and healthy requires a lot of care, knowledge and attention --which Tristam and Stacie were happy to share with viewers. One major movement they demonstrated was helping get in and out of bed safely, showing the proper ways to help someone sit and stand. They also discussed the importance of gait belts, which help to guide your loved ones without having to pull on their arms and risk injury.

Another important issue demonstrated was ways to help a loved one when they experience a fall. When one falls, it’s imperative to make sure you guide them in a way that will get them up without hurting them or yourself in the process. Along with showing falls with moderate mobility, they also demonstrated how to help someone with more limited mobility after a fall.

Learning these skills help to ensure you know what to do when your loved ones hurt themselves. Tristam also suggests that caregivers practice assisting with fall prevention prior to an occurrence by practicing getting up and down from the floor, so both are prepared when a real incident does occur.

1. Have a wide base, meaning you should widen your legs so that you have a good, strong support.

2. Make sure that you do any lifting with your leg muscles and not your back.

3. Keep your back straight and the person you are helping close to your body.

KEEP IT MOVING Our bodies are meant to move for our entire lives.

It is important to maintain that mobility, even as challenges come and muscles get weaker. It is also important for those with limited mobility to have someone help them keep moving, but oftentimes those caregivers receive no training or ways of learning the proper techniques. This lack of education can lead to a lot of problems, like the person they are helping getting hurt or getting hurt themselves. This can also lead to people having to move out of their homes or into community housing without wanting to leave their comfort zone.

Hurley’s Senior Center of Excellence is a leader in this region for innovation of senior care and advancements for seniors with the respectful care they deserve. Geriatric nurse specialists work with elderly patients to make sure they are getting the care and attention that they need and deserve. Hurley is home to many staff who are specialized, not only in senior care, but in providing extra layers of service and safety for senior patients and treating them with dignity.

hurley reproductive EMPOWERING TEENS WITH SCREENINGS With advancements in health care, the way we look at and approach gynecological health has evolved.

Hurley Midwives say for the most part, teens don’t need to have a Pap smear or pelvic exam, even after they start their periods. Dr. Omari Young points out, women in their 20s are often not getting the testing and counseling they need to remain healthy. That can set them up for infertility issues down the road.

More than half of all pregnancies in Michigan are unplanned. Gynecologists and midwives say young women should be taking an active role in their health, discussing contraception options with their health care provider to prevent disease and unplanned pregnancy.

I M P O R TA N T I N F O R M AT I O N FOR TEENS Empowering teens to claim their reproductive health is something Hurley Midwives can help you achieve.

COLLEGE AGE WOMEN If you are in college or heading off to college, you have more than exams to be thinking about. All sexually active adults should be getting screened for STI (Sexual Transmitted Infection) annually.

Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are the most commonly reported infections and if untreated, can lead to PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). You might not think that’s a big deal, but complications of STI include infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain.

Cases of cervical cancer have dropped 50% in the US over the past 30 years, mostly due to widespread screening. Low risk women should start getting cervical cancer screening at age 21, then a pap smear every 3 years between the ages of 21-29.

Reproductive health professionals are a great source for addressing other health concerns and screenings during well visits. Hurley Gynecologist Dr. Omari Young says, “Obstetricians and gynecologists have a unique opportunity to address non-reproductive health at the well woman visit which can include depression screening, anxiety screening, blood pressure checks, diabetes screening, intimate partner violence screening and many other areas that are very important to a woman that are not specific to gynecological health.”

Studies have found that sexual communication with parents, especially moms, is associated with increased safer sex behaviors. It’s important to make teens active participants in decisions about their gynecological health.

Hurley midwife Jennifer Brown, DNP, CNM says, “Pap smears usually do not need to begin until 21 years old. We can test for STI through urine so for most cases, there is no reason for your teen to have a pelvic or genital exam.”

With that said, that doesn’t mean teens shouldn’t come in for a well visit appointment. Teens can talk with a Hurley midwife or gynecologist about questions concerning menstruation, like irregular periods, painful periods or abnormal bleeding.

C A U S E S O F S L E E P D E P R I V AT I O N Sleep recommendations vary at different stages of our life. Adults typically need 7-9 hours of sleep per day, but many people experience difficulties in meeting this need.

Environmental changes, such as stress, diet and caffeine intake, shift work (especially second or third shift employees) and even medications can alter our sleep patterns and cause us to miss important hours of rest.

There are physical changes that take place as we age which can disrupt sleep. As we get older, our body begins to produce lower levels of growth hormones, which can cause people to experience fragmented sleeping patterns, changes in sleep/wake times, light sleeping or difficulty falling asleep.

Try to avoid eating in there, working or watching TV. o Limit screen time prior to sleeping hours. You can also adjust the light option on your device. If available, select the night option or choose blue light filters. Set your device down 15 minutes prior to help your body recognize it is nearly time to sleep. o Maintaining a sleep schedule can be beneficial, you could even keep a sleep diary to assess what helps you sleep better and what causes disturbances. o Create a bedtime routine that helps you practice relaxation.

This can include a shower, a decaffeinated warm beverage, meditation or deep breathing or some routine that helps you to wind down.
