Andy Holmes, 37, has lived in Flint for four and a half years and it was common for him to be outside and active with his friends, especially when he lived downtown. He had felt overweight for the majority of his life, and his highest weight was 325 pounds. A bigger concern than the number on the scale, though, was how he felt. On one excursion with his friends, walking around downtown Flint, Andy noticed that he was out of breath and felt as though he could not continue. Andy had been busy, both working and going to grad school. Graduating in late 2021 was a huge accomplishment, and it also gave him the room to consider his health.
After trying various diets and exercises over the years and finding it very difficult to lose even a small amount of weight while putting in maximum effort, Andy had been looking into bariatrics over the last few years. Reassured by the conversation with a friend who was a resident at Hurley, and his experience of Hurley’s good reputation in the community, he made his first appointment at the Hurley Bariatric Center for March 7th, 2022. Andy explains, “I’m glad I chose Hurley because people here helped me make a decision that’s had such an important impact on my health. There was no pressure in the appointments. Dr.
Wong was very kind, and very straightforward. He was generous with his time, and answered all of my questions so that I could take the information and make my own decision.” Andy decided that it was time to be all in and follow Dr. Wong’s treatment plan.
For Andy, that meant seeing the bariatric surgery as the first of many healthy lifestyle choices. The surgery went as planned, and he was home later that same day. He says, “The surgery, I think, is a tool to aid diet and exercise. I had to be all in, or the surgery alone wasn’t the answer. It was a big adjustment afterward, especially getting used to what portions I could eat, but alongside my friends and family, Hurley offered a lot of ongoing support through educational and group meetings.” Because of Andy’s resilience and his decision to commit to following Hurley’s post-surgery guidelines, he has seen a dramatic improvement to his overall health. Besides losing 160 pounds over 9 months, he no longer needs medications to maintain a normal blood pressure, and he feels much better day to day. He explains, “I’m sleeping much better, and have a lot more energy. Even little things, like cleaning the house. I used to have to vacuum a part of the house and sit down for a few minutes to catch my breath. I don’t have to do that anymore.
"I hope this inspires people to go through with this process because it’s an easy process once you make the decision to be all in, but it can be so hard on your mental and physical health to be overweight."
I’m able to physically do more, and feel much more comfortable doing more things.” Of course, he is spending a lot of time with his friends and they have started going on hikes. He’s even bought a rowing machine for his home.
When asked if there was anything he would like people to know, Andy says, “I hope this inspires people to go through with this process because it’s an easy process once you make the decision to be all in, but it can be so hard on your mental and physical health to be overweight.”
The Medical Weight Loss program at the Hurley Bariatric Center is designed to be a 12-week plan, customized to the medical needs of the individual, but it is also meant to educate the individual so they can maintain their success beyond the completion of the program. This approach extends to all of the various services offered at the center, which include different surgical and non-surgical options. Before surgery, the bariatric professionals help patients choose the right type of surgery for their situation. Following surgery, the staff continues to monitor progress while offering support, such as nutrition and exercise counseling, to help patients have a sustainable weight loss outcome.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, however there is a lot you can do to protect your heart and stay healthy.
Heart-healthy living involves understanding your risk, making healthy choices, turning healthy choices into healthy habits, and taking steps needed to reduce your risk of heart disease. By taking preventative measures, you can lower your risk of developing heart disease and improve your overall health and well-being.
There are several lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk of heart disease.
Maintaining healthy cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and A1c levels are an important factor in heart-health. Though each type of heart disease differs, the common element is the disruption of healthy blood flow to the heart or from the heart to the rest of the body.
● Get your annual physical. People with high blood pressure or high cholesterol are often asymptomatic.
● Take all prescriptions as prescribed. Put your prescriptions on auto-refill so you don’t miss any days.
● Check your blood pressure at home (or at work). Make sure it is staying within the healthy ranges your physician recommends.
● If your numbers are trending upward, contact your primary care physician or cardiologist for an appointment.
Healthy choices are paramount to maintaining a healthy weight and helping to keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels in healthy ranges. But repetition matters! Physical activity strengthens your heart, and regular exercise can be added to even the busiest of schedules.
● Exercise at least 150 minutes a week.
● Add a variety of physical activities; walking, yoga, and strength training are great examples.
● Eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables.
● Reduce saturated fats and sugar sweetened beverages.
Tobacco cessation is perhaps the biggest impact you can make to your heart health - the CDC states that smoking is one of the greatest factors for developing heart disease. If you are already a smoker, work with a Tobacco Treatment Specialist or contact the Michigan Quitline to aid in your tobacco cessation.
There are many types of heart disease, some of them include:
1. CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (CAD)
CAD is the most common form of heart disease. A hardening or narrowing of the arteries that lead to the heart characterizes this condition.
2. HEART ATTACK OR MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION
For many people, a heart attack may be the first symptom of heart disease. A heart attack happens when the arteries leading to the heart become blocked, disrupting blood flow and limiting oxygen delivery.
3. HEART FAILURE OR CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE
This condition occurs when stiffness in the heart prevents the organ from pumping blood adequately through the body.
4. HEART VALVE DISEASE
Valve disease happens when any of the four valves in the heart don’t open or close properly and interrupt blood flow. If the defect in the valve happens at birth, it’s called congenital heart disease.
5. HEART MUSCLE DISEASE OR CARDIOMYOPATHY
This condition can lead to heart failure. It occurs when the heart muscle becomes larger and stiffens, preventing it from pumping blood away from the heart. Sometimes blood can pool in the lungs.
6. ABNORMAL HEART RHYTHMS OR ARRHYTHMIA, INCLUDING ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AFIB)
This condition causes a fluctuation in the heartbeat that happens while at rest. If untreated, arrhythmia can be life-threatening.
Two-year-old Hudson Campbell suffered a catastrophic head injury in September of 2018 when a solid steel bar from a trailer that was parked in his family’s yard fell directly onto his head. It all happened so fast for Hudson’s mom, Megan, who was 34 weeks pregnant at the time. She called 9-1-1, then Hudson’s dad, Andy.
As Andy pulled into the driveway, he saw the emergency vehicles pulling out with his boy. The Campbell family put all their faith into the Level II Pediatric Emergency Department at Hurley Children’s Hospital; the only one of its kind in our region. Andy said walking into the trauma bay at Hurley felt like a movie, he had never seen so many people in one spot at a hospital, each of them there with one goal: to help his son.
Hudson underwent an extensive, five hour surgery to repair his fractured skull; a surgery which Dr. Shah-Naz Khan, who specializes in neurological surgery, compared to putting back together a jigsaw puzzle. Hudson’s surgery lasted into the middle of the night. That five hour wait was the longest of Megan and Andy’s life.
Following surgery, the family learned that the fact that Hudson’s skull fractured upon impact may have actually saved his life and spared him from further complications. The fracture gave relief to the internal bleeding and pressure.
Hudson was admitted to Hurley’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for six days before being transferred up to the Rehabilitation Unit. It was remarkable to watch this resilient child bounce back from such a serious injury. Psychological, Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy evaluations showed no cognitive deficits.
After only seven days in the hospital, Hudson was discharged. His family is extremely grateful to the PICU staff who made Hurley feel like their second home.
Amazingly enough, Hudson has never required follow up therapy. Aside from the scar on his head, Hudson Campbell is a picture-perfect 7-year-old.
Thanks to funding provided by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Hudson and his family received both the clinical and emotional support they desperately needed during their time at Hurley Children’s Hospital. Hudson’s parents often remark about how the team at Hurley treated not only their son, but the whole family.
Children’s Miracle Network funding is also the lifeline for Hurley’s Child and Family Services team which provided comfort items to Hudson who could only handle low-level stimulation after surgery. Special gifts like the starry night light, coloring books, blocks and other activities given to the Campbells helped keep Hudson entertained during those difficult days in the hospital.
Today, Hudson is curious, energetic, and joyful. He is extremely artistic, and his parents say most mornings when he’s not at school you can find him outside in his sandbox, playing with his tractors and trucks.
Hudson and his family are looking forward to sharing their story, and helping with several local and national Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals campaigns across mid-Michigan and throughout the country this year.
Hudson Campbell is truly a miracle!
(L) Since little Hudson wasn’t strong enough to walk on his own after surgery, he enjoyed riding in Hurley’s kid-friendly alligator Wunderwagon around the unit and down to the playroom. (R) Hudson poses in that same Wunderwagon during a visit to Hurley in Fall of 2022.
Support from CMN programs allowed the Hurley team to give Hudson back the gift of play and imagination, and gave Megan and Andy back their little boy.
Raylander Thomas is Hurley’s Volunteer of the Month for January 2023. Last October marked her one year anniversary volunteering here, and she has worked in the Lobby Shop for the entire time. She had been taking classes through AARP, and they said they had arranged for her to meet
Michelle Reed, the Lobby Shop manager. When Raylander went to leave, Michelle said that she would see her tomorrow, and she has been here ever since. Her responsibilities include stocking the supplies, keeping the cooler filled, straightening shelves, greeting customers, and answering the phones. One of the more interesting things she does is take phone orders; people call in every day and want gifts sent to patients.
The best part about volunteering at Hurley for Raylander is meeting people. She jokes, “It gives me something to do besides sitting at home. But I like working with people, talking with them. I used to work at Fisher Body thirteen years, I worked at Sears in the ladies department for a number of years, and worked at Hartland Manor for two and a half years. The best part was always helping people and my coworkers.” When asked why she would recommend volunteering at Hurley, Raylander says,
“It’s a rewarding experience. I know a lot of people that are depressed, and I can’t see them being depressed here at Hurley. The experience can help a person. Plus, I was born here in 1952, and I had a brain tumor removed here too, so Hurley has helped me personally.”
When not volunteering, her favorite thing to do is listen to music. She used to be a disc jockey, and still has a huge selection of vinyl records, both 45s and 78s. She also spends time playing the piano and organ. Her favorite kind of music is jazz, with Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson being two favorites.
Being nominated as Volunteer of the Month came as a surprise, but a good one. She explains, “I said, ‘Wow, ok.’ I liked the idea of being nominated, everything but having to have my picture taken! I’ve only been here a year, but I like what I do, so I try to do it to the best of my ability. It feels good to be recognized, and to do something that helps.”

What type of debridement was performed?
The rules handcuff our coding friends. Everything depends on your documentation because only you can provide the diagnoses and details for the procedures that we can capture in the coding.
Here’s what you may not know:
Specifying the extent of a debridement will often change the DRG. Documentation of the type of debridement performed is key, such as excisional, non-excisional or other. Another key documentation tip is to document the deepest level for which the debridement is performed!
What difference can this make? Let’s look at our report card for two otherwise identical cases of patients with pneumonia, but who also required debridement of their worsening pressure ulcers of the left lower back region.
The only difference between these two cases?
In the first, the surgeon noted “debridement of pressure ulcer left lower back ” in the notes.
However, in the second case, the surgeon noted “excisional debridement of necrotic skin, subcutaneous tissue and fascia from pressure ulcer, left lower back , stage 3” in the operative report - so when the patient is discharged on Day 6, the duration of the admission is within the expected length of stay.
The moral of this story?
If you perform an excisional debridement of subcutaneous tissue or fascia during a debridement, say so!
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) now requires Implicit Bias Training for physicians (and other health care professionals), effective as of June 1, 2022. The requirements apply to both new applicants as well as those renewing their existing licenses or registrations.
