While at Hurley, she was named Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year in 1997.

She was also recognized as a Hurley Hero and was honored as a Corporate Woman of Achievement Nominee by the YMCA. Following her retirement from Hurley, she spent two years at Genesys Regional Medical Center and seven years as a Nurse Liaison at HCare/Binson Home Medical.

Gwen received her Associates Degree in Nursing from Genesee Community College in 1973 and a Bachelor of Science of Nursing from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1989. She is a member of the National Black Nurses Association, the Greater Flint Black Nurses Association, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, the Ballenger Highway Neighborhood Association, Stork’s Nest and is a Victorious Believers Ministry Community Development Board Member.

The Hurley Board of Managers is pleased to introduce Hurley’s newest Board Member, Gwendolyn Huddleston. Gwendolyn is very familiar with Hurley Medical Center, as she began her nursing career at Hurley back in 1973, retiring from Hurley in 2002. During her years at Hurley, she served in a variety of roles including, general duty charge nurse in the Infertility Clinic, Discharge Planning Coordinator, Manager of Discharge Planning, Nurse Case Manager I and Geriatric Nurse Case Manager.

When asked about being appointed to the Hurley Board of Managers, Gwen stated that as a retired nurse from an institution rooted in clinical excellence and service to people, she is always looking for opportunities to give back to her community. She is extremely honored to serve on the Hurley Board and advocate for Hurley, as it remains diligent in its commitment to serving children, adults, seniors and families in our community.

NAME CHANGE Before HR can update an employee’s name in the HR, Payroll and other systems, an employee must provide documentation, such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree, as well as a copy of an updated Social Security card showing their new name. Employees who hold a credential (license, registration or certification) are responsible for changing their name with the governing body for that credential. HR validates the change through the primary source verification process.

Click “Change Name” found on the toolbar on the profile page and complete the form. You are able to attach a PDF of supporting documentation. Click OK and the request routes electronically to HR for review and approval. Don’t have an electronic copy to attach?

VALERIA POWERS

Valeria Powers, a Mental Health Technician in Behavioral Medicine, is the January Employee of the month. She has been at Hurley in her current position for three years.

Valeria shared a wonderful story on how she pursued a position at Hurley. She grew up in Oklahoma and moved to Bay City where she met her husband a year after moving there. They purchased a home in Clio and since Flint was right around the corner, her husband decided to give her a tour of where he grew up. He included Hurley in the tour, noting that he was actually born here.

Tarnesa Martin, RN, known in the Hurley community as Nurse T, serves as a community liaison for health concerns, including diabetes, hypertension and congestive heart failure. She focuses on education and resources to reduce disparities and improve health literacy and access to care for underserved populations in an effort to reduce hospital readmission rates and improve patient experiences. “I work to ensure that members of our community are treated fairly and adequately in all health care matters,” notes Tarnesa.”

Nurse T knows that trust is key when building momentum and igniting unity. She reaches out to underserved populations that may be fearful of accessing healthcare, have mistrust in the healthcare system, or may have health-related knowledge deficits that Hurley can help resolve.

“To build trust, I participate in community outreach and educational events establishing relationships with community groups, minorityowned businesses, faith-based organizations and other trusted channels that serve the underserved population,” said Tarnesa. She encourages individuals to share their stories of overcoming sickness and adversity. Nurse T is then able to address those patient experiences as she continuously works with program coordinators to address barriers to access for crucial services.

Tarnesa believes in engaging those who need care and their families as partners in their own healthcare. She reinforces this through her messaging as she works to educate the community on health issues and the resources available through Hurley. She attends many events where she not only finds herself in the role of community advocate and educator but also lending a hand as a first-aid provider.

Out in the Community Accelerated Learning Academy Nurse T staffed a station at the Accelerated Learning Academy, an adult education facility, where she provided health and wellness resources, along with information relating to Hurley’s Services. Nurse T distributed ‘All About You – Health & Wealth Vision Boards.' She also provided information, education and encouragement on the importance of masking. Her motto, “Protecting me and Protecting each other.”

Invisible Giants Legacy & Leadership Foundation Nurse T supporting the Invisible Giants, an NFL flag football league that teaches Flint youth teamwork and decision-making, where she provided masks, sanitizer and education to the parents and children on health and injury prevention. Nurse T also provided information relating to COVID on symptoms, reporting and prevention tips, as well as information and education on the importance of masking.

New Paths, Inc. Nurse T participated in a health forum for staff and clients at New Paths, focusing on heart health awareness. She highlighted the following information: •

Hurley Neurosurgical Spine Center Conditions Treated Introduction to Marc Moisi, Spine Neurosurgeon Dr.Moisi’s approach to patient care

Whether it is neck/back pain, sciatica, deformities, spine trauma, or tumors - families don’t have to search the state for the expert who can finally give them relief. Spine Neurosurgeon, Dr. Marc Moisi, has moved from southeast Michigan to become Director of Neurosurgery at Hurley Medical Center, where he will be a beacon for specialized care in Mid-Michigan, Northern Michigan and the Thumb. Centrally located at Hurley Neurosurgical Spine Center in Fenton, Dr. Moisi is now positioned to provide patients statewide with an added level of specialized care they can utilize for complex issues, second opinions and innovative treatment.

Fellowship-trained as a Complex and Minimally-Invasive Spine Neurosurgeon, Dr. Moisi can take care of patients no matter how complex their health issues may be. Many take comfort in knowing he doesn’t believe in rushing to surgery.

Regarding his approach to patient care, he says “It’s an individualized patient-centric approach that brings comfort to patients and their families…I believe surgical interventions should only be performed when it is in the patient's best interest after reviewing and exhausting all conservative and non-surgical options.” Through Hurley Medical Center, patients will have access to a suite of services including physical therapists, rehab specialists and pain specialists, all focused on spine care and helping them finally get better.

Dr. Moisi’s approach to patient care is informed by a history of rigorous education, research and experience caring for patients. After completing his medical degree at New York University, he went on to complete an internship in general surgery at Cornell University, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He then completed a residency in neurological surgery at Wayne State University, Methodist Hospital, followed by a fellowship in complex and minimally-invasive spine surgery at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute.

Beyond his education, Dr. Moisi has authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters. He is also on the editorial board of several journals and is involved with translational and clinical research involving anatomical, biomechanical and oncologic problems of the spine.

Dr. Moisi’s ultra-conservative and collaborative approach to spine treatments can provide care to any patient, no matter how complex their issue. His goal when working with patients, he says, “is to develop an individualized patient-centric treatment plan to get the most positive results.”

With the Hurley Neurosurgical Spine Center, patients will have access to the specific, specialized treatment options that address their individual needs to get them back to the activities that they love.

center Medical Weight Loss Program The Medical Weight Loss program at the Hurley Bariatric Center is designed to be a 12-week plan, customized to the medical needs of the individual, but it’s also meant to educate the individual so they can maintain their success beyond the completion of the program. This approach extends to all of the various services offered at the center, which include different surgical and non-surgical options. Before surgery, the bariatric professionals help patients choose the right type of surgery for their situation. Following surgery, the staff continues to monitor progress while offering support, such as nutrition and exercise counseling, to help patients have a sustainable weight loss outcome.

Victor's Success This ongoing approach is something that Victor values, even after finding rapid success. He began Hurley’s Medical Weight Loss Program in March 2021, and by June 2021, his lab results showed tremendous improvement in his liver enzyme levels and A1C, the measurement for diabetes. By September, he had healthy liver enzymes of 52 and a prediabetic A1C level. He had lost a significant amount of weight too, but for him these lab results were the numbers that meant success and better health. Since June 2021, he’s received continued support from the team at the Hurley Bariatric Center and his personal physicians continue to monitor his labs and progress. Victor has seen even more changes beyond the numbers in his lab results, as he no longer feels exhausted all the time and is able to use his renewed energy while playing with his children.

Get to and stay at a healthy weight: Both increased body weight and weight gain as an adult are linked with a higher risk of breast cancer after menopause. It is important that you stay at a healthy weight throughout your life and avoid excess weight gain by balancing your food intake with physical activity.

Be physically active: It is so important to get regular physical activity. Moderate to vigorous physical activity is exercise that makes you sweat and your heart beat faster. It includes walking, swimming, cycling, or running. A growing body of research suggests that doing any kind of activity to avoid too much sitting can help lower cancer risk.

Avoid or limit alcohol: Alcohol increases risk of breast cancer. Even drinking small amounts of alcohol has been linked with an increase in risk. It is best not to drink alcohol at all. For women who do drink, they should have no more than 1 alcoholic drink a day. A drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits (hard liquor).

Good Nutrition: Studies have suggested that a diet that is high in vegetables, fruit and calcium-rich dairy products, but low in red and processed meats, might help lower the risk of breast cancer. A diet low in fat, processed and red meat, and sugary drinks, but high in fruits and vegetables can have many health benefits, including lowering the risk of some other types of cancer.

Breast Cancer Screenings Since 2007, breast cancer death rates have been steady in women younger than 50 but have continued to decrease in older women. These decreases are believed to be the result of finding breast cancer earlier through screening and increased awareness, as well as better treatments.

Recommendations for Women •

Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do so.

•

Women ages 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.

•

Women ages 55 years and older, screening with mammography is recommended once a year.

Recommendations for Men •

18 to 25 is the recommended age for initial imaging test.

•

For men younger than 25 years, diagnostic ultrasound is recommended.

•

For men 25 years of age or older presenting with a palpable abnormality, bilateral diagnostic mammography.

“I always recommend that people get their annual physical where your overall health can be evaluated. At that time, screening tests can be ordered so that preventative health care can begin including tests like mammograms, colonoscopies, lung biopsies for screening as well as skin checks for melanoma. Most health issues if caught early can be easily treated. Therefore, seeing your primary care physician at least once a year can make such a difference. I would like to graciously thank all the Hurley Employees and departments that volunteered to adopt families this past holiday season.

I am very grateful to the team on Same Day Surgery who not only purchased gifts for this special family but also helped furnish, along with staff from Genesys Hurley Cancer Center, their empty townhouse. She is 25 with metastatic breast cancer with three young children. She needed the love of her community. They made her feel so special and loved and she sends along with her children their deepest gratitude.

I am grateful to the staff in the Pharmacy Department. They adopted a family and provided the most wonderful holiday they could ever have imagined. Mom said, "Without these gifts, there would have been none for her and her two children."

She too is a breast cancer patient working hard to make ends meet.

Thank you to the staff in pre-admission testing. They helped a family who desperately needed furniture.

Thank you to the 9 East Oncology Department for spoiling a young mom, her sister and son. They could not thank me enough for the blessings that were bestowed upon them. They said it was more than they could have ever dreamed of with loads of thank yous!

january of the month JORAIN HARDMAN

Jorain Hardman is our January Volunteer of the Month. Jorain volunteers in the Surgical Waiting Area where she is a greeter, hostess and even comforts those who have a loved one in surgery and find they are stressed or are going through a difficult time. Jorain not only volunteers here but also where she lives, her apartment complex, where she works with the Resource Social Worker, assisting with resident activities and working to locate and connect others with community resources. Prior to volunteering at Hurley, Jorain volunteered at Carriage Town Ministries. Jorain noted, “I try to provide service whenever I am able.”

Jorain is special, as she has dedicated her life to service. She does her best to help where needed, always working to motivate and inspire and to make a difference. “A life of service is the highest level of achievement. Living a life of service is doing your best to make a difference through the service you give to others, “Jorain noted.

She believes that we were all created to serve and that service is a vital part of the community.

“Whatever you choose to do in your lifetime and

your community, all vocations are committed to service,” Jorain attributes her being service minded to her faith. “Every day I am thankful for my faith, as it encourages me to serve others. I believe I have a calling to help people.”

Jorain appreciates the opportunity to volunteer here at Hurley. “I have the best coworkers and have a really great time working with them. They are great communicators. They all communicate to ensure that there is always coverage in each of their areas.” There is indeed a great deal of commitment amongst the volunteers. Jorain exemplifies this, as she recently had knee surgery and even that could not keep her away from her responsibilities. The following week after surgery, you could find her manning her post in the surgical lounge. Taking the bus, braving the weather or even the trip up to the surgical lounge, does not hinder her from fulfilling her responsibilities. Jorain acknowledged that she is still recovering from her knee surgery and recognized the valet employees noting how, at times, they may wheel her up to her post in the surgical lounge.

Jorain truly embraces a life of service. “The best thing about volunteering is you go home every day and your heart is full. No matter what happens, you feel good that you helped someone that day. Life can be hard and there are challenges but there is someone out there who needs me. I have to get up and be there for them.

This is the best feeling ever.” Jorain has found that she too has needed community resources and there are so many who have helped her. She expressed how important it is to give back to your community. She feels that volunteering here at Hurley is a good way to do so. She truly could not believe that she was nominated for volunteer of the month. “I believe that I have gained so much volunteering here at Hurley. Meeting the physicians and staff here is one of the most amazing parts. Helping the people who are here for their loved ones, providing condition updates and just being a friendly face is so crucial in this area. It is very rewarding being able to reassure and comfort them,” Jorain noted.

Jorain has three sons and three daughters. When she is not volunteering, she likes to spend time with her family. She does have family out of town so utilizes video chat with her children and grandchildren. Two of her grandchildren are autistic and Jorain noted how she has been going to occupational therapy with them. She is working to learn as much as she can about autism in hopes of helping them and their families. Jorain also travels to North Carolina and Virginia to visit family.

Jorain smiles noting that she is not originally from Flint but is actually from Long Island, New York. While she would love to go back, she finds that Flint is now her home, especially because of the people here.

Jorain is an absolute joy to work with. She is always here bright eyed and ready to go early in the Surgical Lounge to serve our patient's families. She is a great communicator, smiling face and responsible. She is a wonderful volunteer in every way, we are lucky to have her here.

hurley receives $50,000 for covid-19 expenses

The Hurley Foundation received a grant of $50,000 from the Greater Flint Urgent Relief Fund, a partnership of United Way of Genesee County and the Community Foundation for Greater Flint. Funds will be used to help the hospital with increased covid-related expenses.

Hurley’s service to COVID-19 patients has increased the need for machines to supply high flow oxygen and increased demand for a gas, nitric oxide, which is used in treatment.

The demand for these two needs has caused the hospital’s expenses to skyrocket over the previous year.

Don’t Skip All Fats

Go to bed just a little earlier

There are different types of fat that can be found in foods that we eat on a regular basis. Unsaturated fats (mono- and poly- unsaturated fats such as Omega 3, 6, & 9) specifically have heart healthy benefits. They may support blood pressure levels and could help to manage cholesterol. Though more research is needed, some studies have linked these healthy fats to weight control and managing inflammation. These unsaturated fats can be found in foods such as nuts, seeds, fish and oils.

Without enough sleep, your risk for heart disease and heart attack goes up, no matter your age, your weight or how much you exercise or smoke. The textbook rule of thumb for adults is seven to eight hours a night. Make sleep a priority – try to go to bed and wake up at predictable times. Try to avoid caffeine and screen time too close to bedtime.

Saturated and Trans fats are fats that you want to limit in your diet. These types of fat are linked to cholesterol build up in your arteries, weight gain and an increase risk of heart disease and stroke.

Animal fats (butter, cream, cheese, meats), as well as processed foods, desserts and breads are all foods that contain unhealthy fats.

Sneak in a burst of activity Getting more exercise is one of the best things you can do for a healthy heart. Ideally, you should exercise most days of the week. That could be 30 minutes a day, five days a week, for example. It can also include exercises such as strength training and stretching.

Your heart also benefits from shorter bursts of activity, say 10 to 15 minutes at a stretch, with the goal of accumulating 150 minutes a week.

Make a call Call your health providers and schedule your regular checkups. An annual physical can help your physician identify risks of heart disease (such as elevated blood pressure or cholesterol or ECG/EKG abnormalities).

Identifying a problem is the first step in creating a plan with your physician to protect your heart.

Step Outside Being in nature has a wide range of benefits for your health. First and foremost, you are more likely to be active. If you spend too much time inside, then it’s possible that you’re not moving around enough. If you make getting outside more often a goal, that should mean less time in front of the television and computer and more time walking and doing other things that put the body in motion. In addition, people generally are more relaxed when surrounded by nature. Reduce your stress and improve your joy by seeking the calming outdoor environment. Finally, your risk of heart disease and hypertension may be reduced. Lower blood pressure, lower cortisol levels and a lower pulse are all potential benefits to be outdoors.

How to Survive the Goverment Documentation Rules "CHF"– it just isn't enough anymore!

The Federal Government has enough regulations to handcuff any coder and significantly impair his or her ability to indicate how sick our patients are.

Here’s what you already know Congestive heart failure is a common clinical syndrome resulting from failure of either the right or left or both ventricles. With heart failure, the ventricles have an impaired ability to either fill with or eject blood.

Diminished cardiac output can be the result of either systolic or diastolic dysfunction. Heart failure can be either a chronic condition or an acutely decompensated one.

Here’s what you may not know If you use the term “congestive heart failure,” it will not be recognized as a diagnosis that shows the severity of your patient’s illness. The rules now require specification as to whether CHF is systolic, diastolic or combined systolic/diastolic (and, thank goodness, “HFrEF” and “HFpEF” are now acceptable documentation as well!*).

But that’s not all! To show how sick our patients truly are, one must also document the modifiers “acute,” “chronic” or “acute on chronic.” If you cannot specify the acuity, try to ascertain the type of CHF, i.e., whether the CHF is systolic, diastolic or combined systolic and diastolic.

In Memoriam: Paul E. Schroeder, MD Nephrology & Hypertension (December 30, 1927 to January 11, 2022) It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the loss of Paul E Schroeder, MD who passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Dr. Schroeder was a Nephrologist in Flint, Michigan and an esteemed physician at Hurley Medical Center for over 49 years.

Dr. Schroeder graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1952 and joined Hurley Medical Center as an Intern. He graduated from our Internal Medicine Residency Training Program in June 1958.

Dr. Schroeder became interested in the specialty Nephrology in the 1960s and pioneered kidney dialysis in Genesee County and was integral in the start of the Hurley Medical Center Kidney Transplant Program. He founded the Nephrology and Hypertension practice, which he directed until his retirement in 2006.

Dr. Schroeder was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He achieved Lifetime Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine (10/15/1962) and Nephrology (6/17/1980). He served as an attending physician in the Department of Medicine on Hurley Medical Center’s Medical Staff from May 28, 1958 to October 1, 2007, when he retired.

Dr. Schroeder was a kind-hearted physician, who treated his staff like family. He was highly regarded by his peers, colleagues and the countless residents he trained over the years.

We offer our most sincere sympathies to the family, colleagues and friends of Dr. Paul Schroeder. He will be missed.

hurley medical center Despite the worldwide pandemic, scholarly activity remains steady among Hurley Medical Centeraffiliated faculty and resident physicians, with 28 unique individuals contributing to ten scholarly works.

Areas studied include: post vaccination COVID-19 infection among healthcare workers, artificial intelligence versus routine colonoscopy for colorectal neoplasia, cascade effects of a large hiatal hernia, commentary about "The American Promise," indicator for increased mortality and morbidity in burn patients, anti-thrombic therapy to manage CAD and Afib, improving pediatric advanced airway management in the ED, persistent viremia an immunococompetent patient with an inherited chromosome abnormality (ciHHV6), diagnostic considerations for gout and a statewide quality collaboration to improve antibiotic duration and outcomes of patients hospitalized with CAP.
