• Several Blueberry Ambassadors and ♥ high school seniors selected Hurley for their philanthropy projects. Our patients received blankets, books, toys, art projects and gift cards because local children chose to give back to their community.

• Many local kids gave up their own ♥ birthday and Christmas presents, deciding to give to our Hurley Kids instead.

♥ • A group of carpenters use their scraps of wood to create decorative cutouts that our patients spend hours painting during their overnight stays.

McKenna Beauty Bar Box Comes to Hurley Children’s Hospital

cKenna Schummer’s story is filled with courage,

strength and beauty. After going through some of the hardest times battling Osteosarcoma, 11-year-old McKenna Schummer of Grand Blanc found her passion for make-up. McKenna sadly lost her battle with cancer, but her infectious smile and positive attitude, both of which have inspired so many, continue to live on through McKennasSquad, a group comprised of family, friends and community supporters.

The $50,000 first place prize is being used by the pediatric program for new equipment and wherever the need is the greatest at Hurley Children’s Hospital.

It may even purchase those little extras like stuffed animals and toys that make a child’s hospitalization a little easier.

Because Hurley finished in first place, an additional $20,000 was received from the Sheppy Dog Fund and its generous advisor, Dr. Alan Klein, a Hurley pediatric dentist.

A Gift From the Heart On New Year’s Eve 2018, Dr. Mahesh Sharman, who specializes in pediatric critical care at Hurley Children’s Hospital, gave a momentous gift of a lifetime to Hurley physician, Dr. Punam Sharman. While vacationing in Tucson, Arizona, celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, Dr. M. Sharman revealed his gift. For a second year, the Michigan Health Endowment Fund (MHEF) has awarded Hurley a grant for its Food FARMacy. This year’s $78,538 award will focus on increasing Food FARMacy use by seniors. Many older patients do not have enough food, are less likely to reach out for help and have more transportation issues.

Through the program, Geriatric Nurse Specialists will give food bags to all patients aged 65 and older as they are discharged from the hospital.

Bags will contain a Food FARMacy referral and recipes and food to make meals specifically for patients with diabetes, congestive heart failure and hypertension–the most common conditions.

Passes for “Your Ride” will be given so patients can come to the Food FARMacy. Follow-up calls will be made to assess if patients need more food or Your Ride passes. Food delivery will be offered for those who are homebound. Patients who visit Hurley’s Geriatric Clinic at the hospital will also benefit. It is estimated that 700 seniors will be served in one year.

Helping thousands of local families address food insecurity, teaching them ways to eat more healthfully and providing them with important resources is making a huge difference in our community.
