Outdoor Education Program 2020

In 2020, the Hunter Valley Grammar School Outdoor Education Program is changing.

The philosophy behind the new outdoor education/camp concept and structure is to create a more bespoke “Choose Your Own Adventure” model which enables students and staff to tailor their Senior School camp experiences to meet their individual interests and challenges. With 15 varying camp experiences, our students will be spoiled for choice. Students will be encouraged to exhibit greater autonomy and purpose regarding the varied outdoor education outcomes and experiences through the Years 8, 10, and 11 programs on offer. This bespoke program encourages students to challenge themselves to a degree in which they feel comfortable and suits potential ability, with low, intermediate and higher levels of outdoor experiences.

Additionally, students will have a platform to create connections with students in various year levels, exhibit leadership and teamwork, with students from three cohorts participating across a number of camps together.

Reflective of the School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) model and influence, students will also have the option to take part in a variety of service opportunities; develop caring and open-minded approaches to local and global concerns; face challenge and uncertainty with forethought and determination; and work independently and cooperatively to explore new experiences. Finally, this new outdoor education offering and structure will allow our camp program to be modified as further opportunities arise and we as a school

will have the flexibility to adapt and change the options available as our needs develop over time.

Myall Lakes National Park, north of Newcastle, is the superb setting to launch off on this paddling adventure.

Students will experience canoeing in a wetlands environment as they journey to a new campsite each day.

This experience will see you ‘one with the river’ as you move through the tranquil beauty of the Hawkesbury River and journey to new camp location each day.

• Mountain Biking Skills Session– half day session onsite on Bungarra’s trails. Learn new skills and navigate various terrain and trails; • Mountain Biking Park Session – half day session onsite at Bungarra’s MTB park with multiple challenges and a skills area for practicing body position, balance, gearing, braking, cornering and riding obstacle; • Mountain Biking – half day session on Hatchery Bay Trail.

Great for all skill levels, this trail winds its way around Lake Jindabyne to Hatchery Bay. It’s the perfect terrain for rolling and pumping, working on technique and power training; • Mountain Biking - full day session on the TVT Trail (Thredbo to Jindabyne). Winding approx 30km down the Thredbo River to Jindabyne, this track is stunning, flowy and suited for all levels of riders with a few uphill sections through beautiful alpine fauna and crossing several spectacular bridges; • Maintenance Session – Hands on instruction from ALI’s experienced bike guides; • Campfire and Stargazing – Come together as a group to share stories and ideas around the campfire and enjoy the magnificent night sky of the snowy mountains.

This experience is perfect for you!

Spend four days hiking through the Barrington Tops National Park. This hike is a little more challenging than the beginner hike, so be prepared to sweat a little more – but we promise it will be worth it.

Experience includes: • Basic survival training and prepare for more advanced hikes; • Intermediate bushwalking and navigation skills and safety techniques; • Camp craft skills; • Safe practices and habits in the outdoor environment; • Instil and encourage environmental awareness and sound environmental practices in the outdoors.

Students will hike approximately 46 – 54 km (optional hiking at Gloucester Tops depending on how the group is travelling on the last day).

This expedition explores the stunning Maria Island on the east coast of Tasmania; it’s a hidden gem, ripe for discovery.

Maria Island is our most challenging hiking experience.

Experience include: Ph: 6558 2093 | W: outdooreducation.net.au • Mountain Biking: The purpose-built single-track trails incorporate drops, berms, tabletops, log bridges and a pump trac and will develop your biking skills; • White water canoeing: Canoe two sections of the Barrington River, starting out with a flat-water session focused on basic skills before paddling downriver for white water excitement Experienced canoeing instructors will teach basic whitewater skills, river safety and group management; • Hiking: A half day hike up to Mount Prince Charlie takes in open woodlands, dry and wet rainforest, scenic views and local history. This walk is challenging but allows students to be challenged at their own level, as summiting is an added bonus not a necessary outcome. Guides will teach students basic navigation skills and useful information about the environments that they are hiking through.

With a passion for helping and serving, you’ll spend five days working on community service, environmental, conservation and Indigenous projects on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
