2024 HSCF CONVENTION CHRONICLE

2022 HIGH EXPECTATIONS, LESSONS LEARNED & MEMORIES MADE By Susan and David Kalich, Co-chairs HSCF Youth Activities & Education Try to remember the day before you left on your very first hunting trip. Unlike many things these days, it’s probably easy to remember. You can likely still feel the excitement and expectations of an experience you would never have again. Your first hunt! It only happens once, and your friends or family who are going with you want it to be that once-in-a-lifetime, perfect, successful and never to be forgotten experience. They want you to enjoy yourself so much that you come to love the sport and the camaraderie as much as they do. Add to that the adrenaline of youth, the intimidating presence of your teachers from school,

knowledge and experience of hunting in Texas, North America, and the world, and you have a powerful team of knowledgeable, enthusiastic volunteers with the belief that this program creates the hunters of tomorrow.

people you’ve never met, and having lived in the city most or all your life - the scary, unknown outdoors. Bugs! Snakes! Scorpions! The worst of all - no Internet! OMG – LMAO . . . Preparing for your first hunt also presents new and exciting firsts. Firearm safety is absolute. Trip(s) to the shooting range for essential target practice is critical to success. Knowledge about your prey Is necessary. If you are of a certain age, you would have had the required Texas Hunter Safety Course. And then, you are ready to buy your hunting license. But now there are so many questions. Who will guide and show you the bigger picture that is hunting?

sincerely grateful.

The Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF) has created a youth hunting program that takes young inexperienced and first-time hunters on that trip of a lifetime. Their first hunt! Often, the influencers in the lives of these young people are their teachers in school. Especially, If the student chooses the Outdoors Program curriculum that many of the Houston area schools support. HSCF has established a close relationship with these teachers in several of those schools, and that working relationship provides the participants for our youth hunts and supports their Outdoors Programs. Those teachers have the difficult task of identifying which of their students will be selected to go on the annual hunts with HSCF volunteers, and they each have their own methods. One teacher requires interested students to write an essay as to why they should be selected. Another uses the opportunity as an incentive for their hardest-working FFA students. And it can be arbitrary. Choosing the students that are the most interested, deserving, or in need. At this point, the HSCF volunteers become influencers, having lofty certificates confirming them as master hunters and rifle instructors. They also bring career experiences such as educators, police officers, and office managers. Throw in a vast

Having a hunting destination can be a challenge in and of itself. We have been blessed over these many years to have had many commercial and private ranches donate their land and wildlife for these hunts. They too share the belief that they’re entertaining the hunters of tomorrow. And for that, we are

It was an outstanding 2021 – 2022 HSCF Youth Hunting season. But, with few exceptions, we could say that about all our hunts from the past. This season brought us seasoned volunteers, a new ranch to experience, and a new school to our program. We entertained 28 students and 11 teachers with excellent hunting opportunities, extended learning programs, and hope that it was that once-in-a-lifetime, perfect, successful, and never to be forgotten experience. All of our young hunters we’re successful, harvesting whitetail deer, feral hogs, axis, and fallow deer. Many lessons are taught while we are on our hunts. We have those young hunters that you recognize from the very beginning are all about shooting the biggest and the best. Something with “horns”. However, we are usually on a ranch that uses our visit to cull specific species. Twice this season we met hunters who wouldn’t take the direction of their guide to shoot one of these culls because they wanted something bigger with “horns.” It’s a concept that we believed would be easier to explain to the point of understanding than it actually was. With complete sarcasm we can say, a 16-year-old can be very challenging! We learned that when you are starting from scratch, hunting as conservation can be an extraordinarily complex issue. And thank goodness, we were prepared. A rule of the hunt: you shoot it, you clean it, you eat it! The hunters are involved as much as our ranches will allow. When they shoot their animal, they will help load it in the truck and then unload it at the cleaning rack. With the help of our volunteers and ranch hands, hunters will hang and clean their animals. This is sometimes where we lose a few of our participants. However, it’s surprising that with a little encouragement, the processing ends up being more of a

2024 HSCF CONVENTION CHRONICLE science lesson than stomach-turning. It is all in how it’s presented. Volunteers and guides are the best influencers at this phase. They’ve established a relationship in the blind and seem to be who our hunters are hearing best. One particular cleaning session involved removing the necessary glands to do testing for CWD (chronic waste disease). This was something they could relate to having studied it in their Outdoors class. They were fascinated. So were we. On another hunt, one of our hunters harvested a pregnant whitetail doe. The students, along with their teachers, discussed biology and physiology, collected the fetus, preserved it, and took it back as part of a presentation to their class about their trip. Then there was a stand-out young woman hunting with us who was the obvious leader of the pack. At the beginning of the first hunt the ranch manager told us that there would be a drawing for the chance to hunt a very select species – barasingha. After a brief discussion about the importance of this animal, its status as endangered, why we were able to hunt them, and why the ranch had decided to participate in this conservation opportunity, the drawing was held and won by this particular young woman. At the same time, she noticed the disappointment of another hunter. We watched as they had a chat, but we have no idea what was said. However, this young woman generously gave the winning opportunity to that other hunter. As the weekend hunts went on, she was becoming quiet and obviously disappointed that she had not received an opportunity to make a shot. On the last outing, her guide noticed quiet tears. In an attempt to make light of her situation, he made what was meant to be a little joke about her being the only hunter without a prize. At that point, the tears began to flow, and she began to chatter about her disappointment. She went on, and the guide listened, he glanced out the window and then whispered, “If you’ll hush, there’s a big whitetail doe coming for you!” We were all incredibly happy when we heard the shot. And then we heard that distinctive “thump” of a solid hit. She wasn’t upset about giving the hunt away but was upset about the possibility of going home empty-handed. And with that, they were given the opportunity to remind our hunters that there is

17 no guarantee that you would harvest an animal when hunting. Sometimes the proper shot is just not presented. However, we did acknowledge that good deeds are often rewarded. High-fenced ranches in Texas provide a unique opportunity to educate our young people about the varieties of wildlife in the world. Some of the ranches we hunt have herds of axis, mouflon, blackbuck, etc. Others have more exotic species such as scimitar oryx, markhor, barasingha, and so on. All of this provides an educational opportunity, discussing world animal habitat, conservation, and the programs that hunters and hunting organizations support. Riding around the ranch on a high rack, viewing the wildlife is their favorite thing to do. Next to the hunting, of course. In three short days, so very much can be shared without giving the appearance of a school classroom: firearms that can be used safely as a tool, not a weapon, the importance of hunting and sustaining the right to hunt, good hunting ethics, and practices, habitat and wildlife protection, and teamwork. With every HSCF Youth Hunt, we are guaranteed High Expectations, new Lessons Learned, and a wealth of Memories Made. What do we expect for our 2023 season? Much of the same, with some differences and always opportunities. We are planning enhanced firearm safety and training for each hunt. There will be a new school joining our program. And, we have a newly established relationship with Sea Center Texas, where HSCF volunteers will assist with Youth Fishing for Free days at their hatchery facility. HSCF members agree that this hunting and fishing life has given us a passion for the sport that extends into wildlife and habitat conservation, hunter education, and the desire to pass on our hunting and fishing heritage to the future. Thank you to our hard-working Teachers, outstanding Volunteers, generous Sponsors and Ranches, and a Membership that allows us the opportunity to develop a Youth Program in which they can be proud.

LIVE AUCTION FEATURE: CHAMPIONSHIP BLOODLINE LABRADOR RETRIEVER PUPPY PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Nate Skinner Photography

This year we are honored to have a championship bloodline Labrador Retriever puppy featured in our Saturday evening gala auction during the 2024 Houston Safari Club Foundation Worldwide Hunting Expo & Convention. This puppy has been donated by a dynamic duo of men who are making impacts on the hunting community and the world.

THE PUPPY The sire of this puppy is Hank’s best dog (SUNDAY MORNING). He is an AKC Master level hunter, a UKC Hunting Retrievers Champion, an SRS (Super Retriever Series) medal winner, a Field Trial Qualified All Age champion, and a certified Disability Service Dog. He is a one-of-a-kind beautiful companion and is the star dog in the Kingdom Dog Ministries gospel presentation which travels the nation preaching the word of God. The dam is DIXIE, a Hunting Retrievers Champion and now full-time guide dog. This is a black, male puppy. By the time of convention, the puppy will be approximately 12 weeks old, will have basic training, crate training, will be housebroken, and will be available to take home immediately.

The Training To make a good dog great, it takes training. Nick Stillwell of RunN-Gun Adventures is one of the best trainers around and will be training this new puppy. Nick has generously donated one month of training as part of this donation package. Training will be scheduled as soon as possible, preferably in July of 2024.

About Kingdom Dog Ministries - Hank Hough, Founder It is difficult to explain in words what makes Kingdom Dog Ministries (KDM) so powerful. Put simply, it is a man and dog teaching the power of obedience. What makes Kingdom Dog unique though is the ability to relate to every man, woman, and child in attendance at their presentations, no matter where they are in life. It began in a duck blind and moved to the backyard in 2003 without a name, without a vision, or even the awareness of its birth. It began with a neighbor, then a youth group, then a church, then civic organizations, then onto public schools. By 2008, KDM was appearing at both state and national level events and gave a total of 151 presentations across America. Their website video received 3,000 to 5,000 hits per day. Hank and his amazing dogs appeared in magazines, as well as on radio and television, including the 700 Club and Christian World News.

Hank and his two hunting dog companions, Prophet and Monk, were retrieving hundreds of ducks and geese from the marshlands and rice fields of Texas on Saturday mornings. On Sunday mornings they were retrieving for Jesus in a church. That’s right, they were going from swamps to churches, mud flats to carpets, duck blinds to cathedrals, camo to robes, and from guns to organ music. But the mission always remained the same - “Go” … find those that are lost and return them to the Master. It is Friday, September 2008 in Amarillo, Texas. A man stands before a crowd numbering in the thousands, but he is not alone. He is armed with the Word of God and two hunting dogs. By anyone’s standards two hunting dogs and the Word of God are a strange combination, but before the event is over, literally hundreds will dedicate their lives to Jesus Christ, and eightyseven will not leave the church until they are baptized! What did they come to see? Kingdom Dog Ministries, a backyard-born presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ delivered by, of all things, a hunting dog. It is exciting to see where God has taken this ministry. Over the last 20 years, KDM has given thousands of presentations, speaking to churches, schools, various outdoor events, men’s groups, women’s groups, youth and children’s activities, evangelistic programs, and many other places all around the nation including appearances at Wild Sheep Foundation and Dallas Safari Club conventions. Hank believes “truth” is one of the most needed messages in America today. His new messengers of that truth are his dogs: Sunday Morning Showdown (Registered name: Matthew 16:1516), Moses (Registered name: Romans 1:16) and Send Me (Registered Name: Isaiah 6:8). He shows that his message does not need high-tech extravagance, elaborate displays, or elegant speech. It is about the SIMPLICITY of God’s timeless truths, not spoken, but revealed through live illustrations of trust and obedience.

About Run-N-Gun Adventures – Nick Stillwell, CoOwner Nick Stillwell started training dogs at the young age of fourteen, began guiding hunts at 16 years old, and has also placed third, twice, in the World Championship Snow Goose Calling Contest. He completed an HRCH and a Master title with his dog Gunner at the age of seventeen. After Gunner Nick stayed competitive in the hunt test world for several years with other dogs. Nick is now a co-owner of Run-N-Gun Outfitters and also a full-time guide. When it is hunting season, Nick is in the field every day hunting ducks and geese. Nick’s incredible hunting experience chasing ducks and geese all over the country separates him from many other trainers. He has seen it all and knows exactly how to make the perfect retriever to fit all your hunting needs. Dogs have always been his passion and he truly believes duck hunting would not be the same without a great retriever at his side. He now trains professionally during the spring & late summer at our kennels and training facility. There is usually a waiting list because he only takes sixteen dogs at a time and word has spread on his ability. Once customers let him train their dog, they always let him finish them out. Anyone who sees a dog work in the field that he has trained always asks, “Who did the training and can he take my dog too?”

2024 HSCF CONVENTION CHRONICLE

AFRICA’S DANGEROUS SEVEN IN 40 DAYS BY: CHAPUNGU-KAMBAKO SAFARIS In these modern times it is very seldom to hear of safaris longer than 14 days. After months of planning, Steve and Diane arrived in Johannesburg – ready and eager to start their African safari in search for the Dangerous Seven. Our first stop was Kalahari Oryx in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Steve managed to hunt a beautiful 51” buffalo, monster white rhino as well as a USFWS exportable wildmanaged lion, ticking off the first three of the Big five. Diane in turn shifted her focus to the endemic plains game of the Kalahari Desert and harvested a kudu, nyala, oryx, sable and zebra. After 10 days at Kalahari Oryx the team, under guidance of PH Nicolai Raubenheimer, travelled to Nyati Wilderness in the Limpopo Province. The aim was to hunt hippo and crocodile, both very cunning species in the water. On day 3 Steve got on the sticks and shot his hippo bull at sunset. He also got another 53” buffalo, giraffe, impala and warthog, while Diane harvested an ancient klipspringer. We stalked a few crocodiles during the week but only found the right one nearing the end of the last day. Leaving South Africa behind our next stop would be Tsholotsho South near the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. It is right before the summer rainfall season and the bush is at its

driest. Elephants walk for miles to find water and every day we have been sitting at pockets of permanent pools to scout over hundreds of elephants quenching their first. Steve harvested his bull on the 4th day weighing in at 77 pounds as well as a spotted hyena, while Diane shot her 79 pounder on the 8th day. It was time to take a breather from hunting for a few days, so we did some sightseeing at the world-renowned Victoria Falls and caught tigerfish on the Zambezi. Kambako camp in the Niassa Reserve, Mozambique, was our final destination. Leopard was still on the Dangerous Seven list to hunt as well as a few endemic species of the area. We had several leopard on bait which we monitored over the course of 14 days. With the help of local PH Darren, Steve manged to get his big tom on the 8th day. He also harvested a beautiful waterbuck and yellow baboon while Diane hunted a bushbuck, kudu, red duiker, common duiker and Sharpe’s grysbuck, ticking three more species off her Tiny ten list. It has been 40 days, across three countries, hunting Africa’s Dangerous Seven while making endless memories. Steve and Diane were set on this being their last hunt in Africa, but in the end they are already planning their next trip with ChapunguKambako Safaris. There is truth in the words of Karen Blixen (Danish author of “Out of Africa”) - “If there were one more thing I could do, it would be to go on safari once again…”

2024 HSCF CONVENTION CHRONICLE

ODE TO THE ELAND: THE WORLD’S LARGEST ANTELOPE IS ONE OF AFRICA’S GREATEST HUNTS. BY TIM HERALD

I recently read an article a friend wrote that discussed different kinds of hunters. The author said there are generalists, specialists and folks somewhere in between. I guess I am in between because like generalists, I love to hunt all different animals in different places, but I am definitely not a collector. I have found a few animals around the world that I especially like to hunt, but I am not a specialist in the sense of I only hunt sheep, etc. One of the animals, along with buffalo, elk and wild turkeys, that I seriously love to hunt is eland. They are big, majestic, highly in tune with their surroundings, and in my opinion, provide the best tasting red meat on earth. There are a number of eland subspecies scattered throughout Africa, the Cape eland being the most common, then there are Livingston, Patterson (or East African), and the magnificent Lord Derby’s eland of central and west Africa. I have had the privilege to hunt Cape and Livingstone on numerous occasions and will hunt Patterson’s this coming December in Maasailand. Depending on where you are hunting, the tactics are generally pick up tracks and follow like a traditional buffalo hunt, or in more open terrain, spot and stalk. I have done both and have had some wonderful hunts using each method. Back in 2019 I had my family on safari in the East Cape of South Africa just after my twin sons graduated from high school. This was their trip, and I really didn’t plan to hunt myself at all. They booth shot nice kudu and a number f other plainsgame species, but one afternoon we were high up in the mountains and we spotted a number of waterbuck and a herd of eland one feeding one side of a huge bowl. We made a long and very steep climb up to get even with the animals, but we were hidden by the roll of the terrain, and then we side hilled around to where we could see them. There were three or four eland bulls and a couple of them were mature, but not old gray “blue bulls”. My son Will crawled up behind a large rock to where his PH Pieter was, and Pieter pointed out which bull to shoot and Will got on the rifle. It was 365 yards, an awkward shooting position, and Will had never shot over 200 yards. He tried and tried, but just could not get comfortable and steady. Will decided he just could not make that shot. We were about to turn around and leave when our tracker pointed up the hill and to the left of the eland we had been concentrating on, and there stood a massive bodied blue bull. I

ranged him at 403 yards, and there was no way to get closer. If Will wasn’t comfortable at 365 yards, he sure wasn’t going to be at over 400, so I decided to grab the rifle and give it a go. I dialed my Trijicon Accupoint scope up to 18 power and slid in behind the stock. The big bull was perfectly broadside across the canyon, and I dialed the turret too 400 yards. I touched the trigger and sent my Cutting Edge Bullets’ Lazer on its way, and the massive antelope bucked like a rodeo bull and started downhill. We could see a red spot low on his shoulder that marked a perfect heart shot, and I knew he was done. He paused after about sprinting about 75 yards, and I put another one in him though I was sure there was no need. The nearly 2,000-pound animal crashed off a small rock shelf and tumbled down the steep hill into a narrow ravine out of sight. I was elated, but I knew that we were going to have some serious work to get him off that mountain. The bull ended up in a tangled mess in the small drain, and it took a dozen of us to get him cut up and packed off the mountain. It was well worth it as the next night we had some of the finest steaks imaginable cooked over an open wood fire back at camp. That was a fun hunt, but I must admit that I would rather track eland if the situation lends itself to that type hunt. That is the way the majority of Lord Derby eland are hunted, and I have spent many days and taken numerous bulls while tracking in the thick brush country of Botswana. These hunts are conducted exactly like tracking buffalo hunts, but I feel that when you get close to eland, they are more wary thana buffalo. You start out in early morning and try to find tracks from that night or morning, and you follow them until you make contact with the eland. More often than not they wind you, see you or hear you and thunder off in a depressing cloud of dust, but when things work out just right, it is a very rewarding hunt. I was hunting Botswana a while back, and just after good light we came across the tracks of three eland bulls that were only a few hours old. We walked at a good pace following the tracks through the thorny brush as it is sandy ground there and fairly easy tracking. After two hours and maybe four miles, our Bushman tracker suddenly halted and grabbed his ear. My PH Verner and I froze and listened, and sure enough we could hear the tell-tale clicking sound that eland make when they walk. We knew that we were close, and the wind was in our favor.

2024 HSCF CONVENTION CHRONICLE We moved forward at a snail’s pace, and when we came around a large thorn tree, we could see two bulls feeding contentedly. Both were big bodied with good horns, but neither looked old to me. I was a bit disappointed, and then we saw the brush moving to their right. A couple minutes later, another bull emerged into the open, and he took my breath away. He was dark gray, had a huge swinging dewlap, monstrous body, and almost no horns! He was so old his horns had literally been worn down to stubs that were maybe a foot long. He was like a scrum cap buffalo. Verner leaned over and whispered in my ear that he was sorry, and we would go try to find a better one, and I told him to set up the sticks that I absolutely loved this old bull. There wasn’t much to the shot the huge beast was only sixty yards away. I had my Trijicon scope bottomed out on 2.5 power found the shoulder and put a .416 caliber Cutting Edge Safari Raptor through both lungs. The bull stumbled about 5 yards and collapsed. That was my favorite eland hunt and my favorite eland I have ever killed. He was ancient, and that means way more to me than the stretch of a tape. I have a trip to South Africa planned for next June, and eland will be my main focus. I am visiting three of Worldwide Trophy Adventure’s quality outfitters while there and will hunt eland with each. I’ll be tracking in the Kalahari near the Botswana border, spotting and stalking in mountains of the East Cape, and a combination of both at the edge of the Great Karoo. It will be a grand safari, and I hope to meet up with another old blue bull or two, as they are absolutely my favorite plainsgame animal to hunt. I can taste the backstraps in my mind, and its making me long for a braii.

25

GEAR FOR ELAND Eland are huge, up to 2000 pounds, and have heavy bones, so I like to use a large rifle when possible. In areas like the east Cape where shooting can be long, I prefer a .338 Win. Mine is topped with a Trijicon 5x20 Accupoint scope that has a turret and shoots very well out past 500 yards. In the thick stuff when tracking, I prefer a big bore as shots are rarely much over 100 yards and sometimes very close. I have taken eland with my .470 double rifle topped with a Trijicon RMR2, red dot type sight, but my go to is my .416 Rem topped with a 2.5x12.5 Accupoint. I can shoot from 0-200 yards without thinking twice and the big 370 grain Cutting Edge all brass Safari Raptor bullets I shoot are just devastating. They have 6 pedals that sheer off a few inches after entering the animal that do massive trauma, and the solid brass back end acts as a jagged solid and penetrates incredibly. To me, the bullet is more important than caliber on huge animals like eland and buffalo. The bullet must penetrate and retain weight, and I have found nothing that can rival the CEB Raptors in that respect.

HSCF GRANT RECIPIENT

GRANT UPDATE: COASTAL PRAIRIE CONSERVANCY The Houston Safari Club Foundation Grants Program supports conservation efforts by providing financial assistance to projects and organizations whose goals align with HSCF’s mission to preserve the sport of hunting through education, conservation, and the promotion of our hunting heritage. The following is a write-up about the Coastal Prairie Conservancy from their Advancement Director, a recent HSCF grant recipient. I love how certain sounds can instantly transport me to another time and place, recalling memories of the past. For me, a duck call is one of these sounds. It takes me back to practicing calls with my dad in the backyard. To annoy my sister while she was talking to her boyfriend on the phone. And most of all, to that early morning out on the Katy Prairie when I went hunting with my dad and grandad for the very first time. I was nine and had just received my first shotgun for my birthday. I had diligently studied and passed Hunter’s Safety, spent hours in the garage with my dad learning how to hold, carry, clean, and store my gun, and thoughtfully planned my clothing and gear for the hunt. In the darkness we set out on foot, the silence of the morning allowing me to clearly hear nature’s symphony all around me. It was a long walk for my legs, and when we finally arrived at the wetland to set up for the morning there were hundreds of ducks on the water. Disturbing them as we set up our decoys, the whoosh of their wings overhead was a glorious sound. Wideeyed, I turned to my dad. “It’s not sunrise yet,” he whispered, “they’ll come back.” I helped set up the decoys and climbed into the blind, anxious and nervous for their return. As we called the ducks back into the wetland, they didn’t all come at once. Instead, groups would circle and come back, half a dozen at a time. What a thrill it was to watch as they looped around, almost passed, and then returned, knowing they heard

my call. For me, this was a magical moment, and it continues to be one of my favorite parts of duck hunting. It’s that instant, as you are calling them when they turn and head straight for the water. You know you’ve got them, and the sound of their return takes over the skies. Here they come. That first morning it was hard for me to sit still, and my gun was heavy. I couldn’t hold it steady as I tried to stand up and shoot each time the ducks came in. After a number of attempts, my dad suggested, “Stay standing, let your gun rest on the blind, and wait until you see the duck set its wings.” His name is Maverick. He’s hanging in my office. My very first duck. I think a lot about those mornings and the things that I learned. The pieces of our family’s history were passed down to me by my dad and grandad as we sat out on the prairie. My daughter is about to turn seven, she’s already a wild lover of the outdoors and curious about hunting. I worry that she won’t get to have the same experiences. I’m watching habitats disappear and numbers decline. I wonder how long I will be able to hunt with my kids, and will they be able to hunt with theirs? I’m grateful organizations like the Coastal Prairie Conservancy are out there trying to make sure that prairies and wetlands are conserved. Not only are they preserving the places to go hunt ducks, but they are also ensuring there will be ducks to hunt. The rich land that the Coastal Prairie Conservancy is preserving provides foraging and roosting habitat for migratory waterfowl, as well as nesting and brood-rearing habitat for mottled ducks who live their entire life cycle on the prairies and wetlands of the Texas coastal region. I know how important the wetlands are to the ducks, but it’s the grasslands, too, because without them they have nowhere to nest. And nowhere to nest means the ducks soon disappear forever.

2024 HSCF CONVENTION CHRONICLE Supporting conservation and organizations like the Coastal Prairie Conservancy feels like my gift back to the prairie for all it gave me as a young hunter and all it continues to give me today. I want everyone to have the opportunity to learn how to duck hunt and spend time in wetlands with family and friends. Because even now, as I write this, I can close my eyes and hear the ducks overhead. And I am overwhelmed with wonder, just like I was on that very first morning. What is the Katy Prairie Preserve? The Katy Prairie Preserve is a permanently protected coastal prairie natural area located in the middle of the Central Flyway. It boasts more than 300 resident and migratory bird species; 110 species of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles; 700 species of wildflowers and grasses, and thousands of terrestrial insects and aquatic invertebrate species. The Katy Prairie has been designated a Global Important Bird Area by the National Audubon – one of only 20 sites in Texas. The entire Katy Prairie Preserve, protected through fee acquisition (13,590 acres) or conservation easement (5,012 acres), now encompasses over 18,000 acres of coastal prairie and supports multitudes of wildlife, including migratory and resident birds in the Central Flyway. The Indiangrass Preserve, a large area on the Katy Prairie Preserve providing public access, now totals 2,877 protected acres and is nearly double the size of Memorial Park and three times larger than New York’s Central Park. Why do we restore and enhance coastal prairie? The Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s restoration efforts recreate the historic topography of the region, including prairie potholes and Mima mounds, and reintroduce grasses and wildflowers that existed when the land was naturally managed by bison, fire, and, possibly, Indigenous peoples who lived in the area prior to the arrival of Europeans.

S14 • OREGON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE 2024 Oregon Special Rocky Mountain Goat Tag

VALUE: The state of Oregon is pleased to provide to HSCF the Special Rocky Mountain Goat Auction tag for the 2024 season. This tag will be valid for four (4) months (Aug 1 – November 30, 2024) in any open hunt area with tags as listed in the 2024 Oregon Big Game Regulations. Hunter must complete a mandatory orientation prior to the hunt and must check out through the local ODFW office near where the goat was harvested upon completion of the hunt. Hunting Rocky Mountain goats in Oregon is an extraordinary opportunity with a variety of hunting conditions, high success, and amazing animal quality. Hunt areas range from full hard core backcountry hunting to hunt areas with relatively easy access. In the last five years, 95% of Oregon goat hunters have been successful. Oregon hunts Rocky Mountain goats very conservatively. As a result, our hunt quality is high with an average score over 45” and 43% of the harvest animals green scoring at or above the Boone & Crockett minimum for record book entry (47”). Amazingly, 18% of harvested goats in the last 5 years are at or above the all-time record book minimum score of 50”, with our largest harvested goat scoring 54 3/8”. Tags for Oregon goats are limited, with only two non-resident tags available in 2023. The average auction sale price for this coveted tag, over the past five years, is $53,500. All funds generated from the special Rocky Mountain Goat Auction tag are statutorily dedicated specifically for Rocky Mountain goat management and research in Oregon. Ten percent of the purchase price is donated to HSCF. The continued leveraging strength provided by these funds allows the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife to develop research and management programs critical for maintaining this highly desirable species on the landscape. Hank Hough of Kingdom Dog Ministries and Nick Stillwell of Run-N-Gun Adventures have generously donated a championship bloodline Labrador Retriever puppy (black, male). The Labrador Retriever is one of America’s most popular dog breeds. For hunters, the family-friendliness and “work hard, play hard” attitude of a lab makes it an ideal sporting pup. A natural retriever, they can be trained to hunt upland birds and do it with panache. But they really shine in the duck blind. The father of this puppy is Hank’s best dog (SUNDAY MORNING). In addition, Nick Stillwell of Run-N-Gun Adventures has donated one month of training for your new puppy. Nick is a full-time guide and dog trainer, co-owner of Run-N-Gun Adventures and has been training dogs since he was fourteen years old. Dogs have always been his passion and he truly believes that duck hunting would not be the same without a great retriever at his side. Training will be scheduled as soon as possible, preferably in July of 2024. HSCF thanks Hank Hough of Kingdom Dog Ministries and Nick Stillwell of Run-N-Gun Adventures for this 100% donation.
