From the Director. 2024 represents a new chapter in the life of Hunters Hill Music. After years under the direction of operatic great, Geoffrey Chard AM and his devoted committee; the baton has changed hands and I now look forward to engaging with you; the community of Hunters Hill and music lovers throughout Sydney. The 2024 Season features two of Australia’s finest string quartets, the Tinalley String Quartet, who returns to the stage with much beloved actor/director, John Bell in a musical exposé of one of history’s greatest musical figures, Ludwig van Beethoven. The Goldner String Quartet, the members of which I have been privileged to know as tutors, mentors and now colleagues and friends, make their Hunters Hill Music debut – in their final season together! This may be one of the final opportunities to hear the Goldner’s in Sydney, don’t miss it! When I play with Diana Doherty I am awe-struck by her energy, dynamism, virtuosity, and by how powerfully she communicates through music. In ’Water Spirit’, Diana is joined by a stellar line up of musicians drawn from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Tenor Andrew Goodwin makes a reappearance for HHM in ‘Joyeux Noël’, a program inspired by the pure joy of singing. Featuring works by songsmiths such as Dowland, Purcell, Handel and Korngold; reimagined by the musicians for string quartet, guitar and voice. At the conclusion, join the musicians for a glass of bubbles as we celebrate the Festive Season and welcome in the New Year. I look forward to welcoming you to the beautiful acoustic of the Hunters Hill Town Hall and sharing the spirit of community and the transformative power of music together. Program 1. Beethoven’s Letters DATES

Sunday 24 March 2.30pm Hunters Hill Town Hall ARTISTS

John Bell – Actor Tinalley String Quartet Adam Chalabi – 1st Violin Lerida Delbridge – 2nd Violin Justin Williams – Viola Patrick Murphy - Cello Beethoven has been immortalised by popular culture. Of course, there is the music; but the tragedy of his deafness, chaotic love life, provocative political sentiments and tempestuous nature has proved as fascinating and captivating as his musical legacy. Yet, if we strip away the cinematic narrative and consider his letters, writings and music, we glimpse a man portrayed with furrowed brow and tempestuous outpourings, yearning to be understood by his fellow man, vulnerable through heartbreak, and at his core, a man of faith. Beethoven would write sixteen string quartets in his lifetime. These glorious quartets give voice to the innermost landscape of the human heart and spirit and continue to astound both listener and performer over two hundred years after their conception with their inspiration and audacity. They stand, like Michelangelo's statues or the plays of Shakespeare, at the pinnacle of Western art. ‘Beethoven’s Letters’ interweaves the musical language of Beethoven’s quartets with the spoken words of his letters and memoirs. Acclaimed actor and director, John Bell portrays the man behind the genius in this unique, musical exposé that features movements from Beethoven’s Opus 18, 74, 131, 132 & 135, including the Heiligenstadt Testament.

Running Time: 75 minutes without interval.

“Bell’s captivating readings brought Beethoven to life, capturing the flavour and spirit of each letter and offering a powerful insight into his complex character”. THE AUSTRALIAN

The Goldner String Quartet have graced Australian and international stages for 30 years. Revered as one of Australia’s finest ensembles, 2024 marks their final year performing together and in this intimate recital the Goldners present two hallmarks of the string quartet repertory: Shostakovich’s 8th Quartet, a desolate expression of human agony and torment; and the second quartet of Beethoven’s Opus 59 ‘Razumovsky’ set, a work of extraordinary depth and beauty with a glorious second movement inspired by the ‘starry sky’ and ‘music of the spheres’. A fitting farewell for a quartet who has captivated audiences for decades.

Program 3. Water Spirit. DATES

Sunday 22 September 2.30pm Hunters Hill Town Hall ARTISTS

Diana Doherty – Oboe Alexandra Osborne – Violin Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba – Violin Justin Williams – Viola Simon Cobcroft – Cello David Campbell – Bass Benjamin Kopp - Piano

There are a handful of works for chamber ensemble that illicit a knowing smile when mentioned … Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet is one such work. Written at the tender age of 22 when Schubert was basking in the sunshine of the Austrian countryside, it is charming, sunny and utterly irresistible! Australian composer, Nigel Westlake, was equally inspired by the wonders of nature when he composed Spirit of the Wild for oboe virtuoso, Diana Doherty. Composed after visiting the Bathurst Harbour on the South-West Coast of Tasmania, this reimagining for small ensemble and oboe is an extraordinary tour de force for the oboe, and in the hands of Diana, unforgettable. Finnish pianist and composer Olli Mustonen’s Toccata opens the program, a man for whom nature is at the heart of his life and work … “the most important sounds are the wind, rain, trees.”

PROGRAM

MUSTONEN – Toccata for piano, string quartet and double bass WESTLAKE – Spirit of the Wild Chamber Concerto for oboe, piano, string quartet and double bass SCHUBERT – Piano Quintet in A major, D.667 ‘The Trout’ (Forellenquintett) Running Time: 75 minutes with interval.

“…Doherty’s performance was a tour de force… interspersing cadenzas that wailed and shrieked like a trapped creature with dynamic virtuosity that flitted between chords as though her life depended on it.” SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
