New citizens welcomed

More than 200 people from 40 countries were invited to take the pledge of commitment as Australian Citizens alongside family, friends and dignitaries at Civic Theatre in September.

Hailing from all corners of the globe, from Iraq and Jordan to Chile and Ethiopia, Newcastle’s newest citizens were treated to traditional performances by the Deadly Callaghan Yidaki Group and dancers of Hamilton South and Plattsburg public schools before receiving their citizenship certificates. Among them was Terez Al Talli and Ghassan Allawi, of New Lambton, their sixteen year old daughter Rahaf and twelve year old son Fadi.

After fleeing war-torn Syria as refugees in 2018, they spent a year in Iraq, before settling in Newcastle in 2019, with Terez finding work with a security company and her husband driving buses. (continued on page 5)

LOCAL Matters

Yes / No

This month Australians are being asked to vote on a proposal to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

I won’t wade into the pros and cons of the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ arguments here. There’s plenty of far more qualified commentators happy to do that on every conceivable media platform. There was also a handy guide to the referendum posted to every household recently. Please read it.

According to the Australian Electoral Commission website 17,676,347 Australians are enrolled to vote in the referendum. This is the largest enrolment in our history. The estimated national enrolment rate is now 97.7% of the eligible population. Well done Australia! It’s a pretty tall order to get a referendum question over the line. Firstly it requires a ‘Yes’ vote from the majority of all electors nationally. And secondly it must achieve a majority in a majority (at least four) of the six states. Since Federation in 1901 there have been 44 proposals for constitutional change put to Australian electors. Only eight have been approved. We definitely don’t make constitutional changes willy nilly.

Early voting commences Tuesday 3 October. You can have your say early, up until Friday 13 October, at early voting centres in Wallsend, Mayfield West, Charlestown and Scott St Newcastle. On referendum day itself there will be no shortage of polling places. Many local schools, churches and community centres will be open to take your vote.

If you can’t make it in person on the day or in the early voting period you can apply for a postal vote. But note that applications close on Wednesday 11 October. For full details go to: aec.gov.au/referendums/

Lifeguards prepare students for summer

Thousands of local primary school students will be better equipped to take a dip this summer thanks to a City of Newcastle program that has been saving lives for more than 50 years.

City of Newcastle lifeguards have attended a number of local schools recently to educate thousands of students, from Kindergarten to Year 6 in preparation for this year’s swimming season. The program is based around teaching preventative measures, basic fundamentals of water safety and how to enjoy yourself safely around water.

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said with temperatures soaring recently, it is important to ensure the next generation knows how to cool off without getting into hot water.

“More than one million swimmers and sun-seekers are attracted to our picturesque coastline each year, but behind the stunning beauty lies inherent risks,” Cr Nelmes said.

“Since 1966, our incredible team of lifeguards and aquatics staff have been utilising their skills and experience to empower children and adults with the knowledge they need to stay safe at our beaches, ocean baths and pools.

“Our free Water Safety Education Program is delivered to over 45 primary schools across Newcastle each year, educating more than

13,000 children about dangerous water conditions, how to swim safely and what to do if they get into difficult situations.”

The program is delivered during winter and spring each year, with CN’s lifeguards committing more than 700 hours during an eight-week period to promote the crucial water safety and drowning prevention messages across the city.

Almost 150,000 students have been engaged in the program during the last decade, with CN taking the program online through a digital presentation during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure no-one missed out on the key

water safety messages.

City of Newcastle’s executive manager community and recreation Lynn Duffy said delivering the program is one of the highlights of their year for many CN lifeguards. “The delivery of the program is a significant component of CN’s overall approach to water safety, and one of the most significant youth engagement programs we undertake,” Ms Duffy said.

“Our lifeguards are passionate about sharing these life-saving lessons with children across Newcastle, which will help minimise the risk of children getting into dangerous situations and prevent aquatic accidents and drownings.”

Time for a chemical clean out?

Did you know you can use the Household Chemical CleanOut service to safely dispose of household chemicals—such as cleaning products, motor oil and pesticides—that could harm human health and the environment if placed in your bins or poured down the drain.

CleanOut events are held twice each year in Newcastle, and at other locations across NSW on specified dates. NSW residents can make use of any event, free of charge.

The next Household Chemical CleanOut will be 9am to 3.30pm on Saturday 28 October at Newcastle (Tighes Hill) TAFE Student Car Park, 266 Maitland Road, Tighes Hill (opposite Henry Street).

The events are supported by the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW EPA’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the Waste Levy.

You can take household quantities of the following household chemicals and items (up to a maximum of 20 litres or 20 kilograms of a single item) solvents and household cleaners, floor care products, ammoniabased cleaners, pesticides and herbicides,

poisons, pool chemicals, hobby chemicals, motor fuels, fluorescent globes and tubes, acids and alkalis, smoke detectors, paint and paint-related products, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, car and household batteries, motor oils and cooking oils. Businessrelated and commercial quantities of chemicals are not accepted.

Terez described leaving her family’s home country as very hard but said they were very lucky to reach Australia and become citizens.

“It was not an easy decision to leave Syria, but with the war, we had to leave. We left behind the place where we grew up and our parents and brothers,” she said.

“When we found out we had been accepted for a refugee visa to Australia, honestly we felt like we were flying. We were over the moon!

“We didn’t speak any English when we arrived here, so we learnt through TAFE, but when the pandemic struck, we had to learn English online, which was very difficult.

“Newcastle is such a nice area, we are so happy now. We are from a village called Sedneyah, outside Damascus, not a big city in Syria, so we are really enjoying the beaches here and the good weather.”

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes congratulated Newcastle’s newest Australian Citizens on this special day.

“We welcome refugees like the Allawi family from Syria, and new migrants to our city and our country, and demonstrate our compassion and provide them with support. Newcastle is proud to be a progressive and inclusive city and we are so thrilled to be welcoming such a culturally diverse group of new citizens today.” Cr Nelmes said.

Don’t Mention Casablanca

Left: the cast of ‘Don’t Mention Casablanca’, the next production from Newcastle Theatre Company, playing from Saturday 14 t0 28 October at 90 De Vitre St, Lambton

The next production from Newcastle Theatre Company during Season 2023 is titled Don’t Mention Casablanca which opens on Saturday 14 October.

Casablanca, the film, is a Hollywood classic but few know the true story of its Jewish director, Mihaly Kertesz. After a successful career in Europe which included directing a 14 year old Greta Garbo in Sweden, Kertesz moved to America in 1926 at the invitation of Warner Bros. As “Michael Curtiz”, he found fame and fortune as one of the studio’s most prolific directors, responsible for 86 films for the studio including such classics as Robin Hood, Mildred Pierce, Yankee Doodle Dandy and White Christmas as well as Casablanca. But behind the glamour of the movie set, this charismatic Hungarian Casanova left a legacy of heartbreak and scandal.

This is a profoundly personal story for New Zealand playwright Michelanne Forster. Her father Michael’s memoir had revealed his illegitimate birth and impoverished childhood as a Jewish refugee. His mother was Thilde Forster and Curtiz his father.

The play tells Thilde’s story, with Michael narrating. It explores Thilde’s embattled screenwriting career, her doomed love affair with Curtiz, and her despair as the growing menace of Nazi Germany traps their young son in Vienna. Thilde battles both Curtiz and Warner Bros. to get her son to safety in USA. The deal she wrangles saves her son’s life but costs her dearly.

The play is set in Vienna, Hollywood and Brazil between the years 1919-1943. This is the first

production staged in Australia. It will appeal to all those who love old Hollywood, European history and strong biographical drama.

Evening performances will be held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 14 to 28 October. 2pm Matinees will be performed on Sunday 15 and Saturday 21 October. Tickets at newcastletheatrecompany. com.au/

The Local has a double pass for Don’t Mention Casablanca to the winner’s choice of performance. To be in the running for the double pass simply text the word ‘Casablanca’, your first and last name, and your preferred performance day/time to 0455 210 000 by Wednesday 11 October. The winner will be advised by phone and their name published in next month’s issue of The Local.

THAT WAS THEN This is now with

Premier Hotel

In March 1891, Thomas Williams purchased land near Broadmeadow station, and submitted a development application “for premises proposed to be erected at the intersection of the Adamstown and Newcastle-Wallsend roads to be known by the sign of the Jersey Hotel.” Williams engaged James Henderson, the eminent architect of the ornate Victoria Theatre in Perkins Street Newcastle, to design a three storey, 15-room brick hotel. With the building completed in early 1892 and after a change of mind on the name, Williams applied for the publican’s license he needed for his Premier Hotel to commence trading. On Thursday 17 March 1892 the Licensing Bench approved his application, but instead of downing drinks in celebration, Williams

found his hotel in the drink due to inundation. That very night the heavens opened and Newcastle was drenched with torrential rain, with flooding reported at Wallsend, Waratah, Lambton, and New Lambton. At Broadmeadow “the flat between Adamstown and New Lambton and down to Lambton-road was one sheet of water on Friday morning.” Ralph Snowball photographed the newly licensed hotel, an island of refuge in an expanse of water.

The deluge had tragic consequences when “an elderly man named Edward Atkinson fell into a waterhole while looking for cows in a paddock near Adamstown and was drowned.” Once again, citizens called on the government to get on with its long-promised drainage scheme for the area. The main stormwater drain through the Broadmeadow flats was completed in 1895, but the area around the Premier Hotel continued to be impacted by flooding until the completion of the Adamstown branch of the drain in 1899.

In 1939 the hotel was rebuilt as an attractive two storey structure in the art deco style. Having survived a natural disaster in 1892, the hotel suffered damage in the 1989 earthquake and was repaired as a smaller, simpler building. Plans for a $34 million redevelopment of the site are now before Newcastle Council, for a ninestorey apartment building with ground floor pub.

more services are cancelled. It’s like a Catch-22 that stops people using public transport. Thanks for your query.

You are not alone in your frustration with bus cancellations. There is media coverage, including media releases from the new NSW government about this. https://www.nsw.gov.au/media-releases/tensof-thousands-of-privatised-bus-services-cancelledover-a-million-left-stranded

Public busses have been privatised and it seems that the privatisation contract penalises the private bus providers for being late, but usually not for cancelling bus services.

The former NSW government, which privatised bus services, also held an inquiry into the privatisation of bus services and you can find details here https:// www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/committees/inquiries/ Pages/inquiry-details.aspx?pk=2858.

Unfortunately, it seems that the privatised bus services have been contracted and it may be difficult to change them.

Secrets of tennis elbow

If you can’t open a jam jar, lift a child or doom-scroll on your phone for three hours – you might have dodgy tennis elbow-itis!

You don’t have to be Serena Williams, Rafa Nadal or Ash Barty to have tennis elbow. Heck you don’t even have to play tennis to have tennis elbow!

Tennis elbow affects about 1-3% of adults every year – so, lots of people. And for those people, it can be debilitating. Tennis elbow is most commonly felt as pain on the outside of the elbow due to irritation of the tendon from forearm extensor muscles. Usually associated with over loading of the elbow, hence the ‘tennis’.

But hold on! Pain that occurs in this region of the elbow may not always be associated with irritable tendons and may actually be referred from the neck (file under ‘Bodies Are Weird’). The nerves that exit through the lower levels of our neck travel down through our upper arm and past the elbow and when grumpy can result in pain along that distribution, which can result in pain that is very similar to that of tennis elbow.

Although the pain may be similar with both presentations, the treatment for them is very different. Your physio will ask a variety of different questions complete a thorough examination of both your elbow and neck to determine what the underlying cause of your pain may be and how we can best help it. Here are a couple of quick questions to help work out which it is: 1. If your pain radiates above/below the knobbly bit of your elbow – could be nervy

2. If you’ve got any pins and needles/numbess/strange goings on down the arm – could be nervy

3. If you’ve got a stiff/sore neck and shoulder on the sore elbow side – yep – could be nervy.

If you’re someone who has a dodgy elbow that just won’t go away or have a bit of dickysticky neck then give the bendy-elbowed Brightside a call on 4062 8862. Or book online at www.brightsidephysio.com.

If a beneficiary named in a will dies before the testator or does not survive the testator for 30 days, the gift they would have received from the will would normally lapse and become part of the balance of the estate, but statutory substitution can alter that general principle in certain circumstances.

In NSW and other States, if the beneficiary under the terms of a will dies before the maker of the will and that beneficiary was a child of the will maker, the gift will not generally fail but will be received by any children of the predeceasing beneficiary, provided no substitute

beneficiary was nominated in the will and the statutory substitution provisions have not been excluded in the will.

In practice, that means that if a parent makes a gift to their child in their will, and the child dies before the parent, the gift will generally be inherited by any children of the deceased child, that is, by the grandchildren. The law provides for ‘substitution’ so that if a child dies before their parent, leaving children, those descendant children will still receive benefit from the gift which was intended to be made to their parent. This reflects a person’s usual intention that a child and ultimately their immediate family will benefit from any inheritance. Statutory substitution can only apply to assets held solely by the testator, and not for example to jointly held assets or assets held in trust such as superannuation. Where a person does not wish their grandchildren to inherit a particular gift from them if their child does not survive them, provision must be made in their will for an alternative disposition of the gift, or specific provisions included in the will showing that the statutory substitutional provisions are not to apply in their will. PHARMACY Matters

Hair loss

Hair loss has many causes. It can be permanent or temporary. Most people’s hair grows more slowly as they get older and some people, mostly men, go bald. Some types of hair loss can happen to anyone at any age. Medicines can sometimes help stop hair loss. Each hair strand grows out from a hair follicle just under the surface of the skin. A scalp has about 100,000 hair follicles. Hair strands on the scalp normally grow about 1cm a month for two to five years. Eventually, a hair strand stops growing and, after about three months, falls out. This happens when the hair follicle starts to grow a new hair strand. A healthy person loses about 50–100 hairs from the scalp every day. If the hair-growing cycle is interrupted or hair follicles are injured or altered, hair strands may fall out early, not be replaced or be altered. This leads to thinning, or part or total baldness. Hair loss can also happen on other body areas. The medical name for hair loss is alopecia.

Causes of hair loss

Cancer treatment Chemotherapy and radiation treatments can affect hair follicles and cause growing hairs to fall out.

Trauma or hairdressing Overuse of chemicals (e.g. hair colours, perming solutions) and heat can damage hair and hair follicles. Regular tension on hair (e.g. tight rollers, tight plaits) or rough brushing can also cause hair loss. ‘Trichotillomania’ is hair loss due to a person pulling, plucking and breaking their own hair. Medicines Some medicines can cause or worsen hair loss. Ask a pharmacist or doctor for advice.

Medical conditions Some medical conditions can cause hair loss (e.g. anaemia, thyroid problems, cancer, HIV/AIDS). Stress, anxiety, pregnancy, serious illness and surgery may lead to hair loss a few months after the event.

Poor diet Poor nutrition, especially a lack of iron, may cause hair loss.

Skin conditions Some skin conditions cause hair loss (e.g. dermatitis, psoriasis, infection). Tinea (also called ringworm) is a skin fungal infection. Tinea on the scalp causes a red, itchy, scaly patch, with hair loss in and around the patch.

Scarring Hair does not grow from scar tissue.

Treatment

There is no permanent cure for male/female pattern baldness or conditions where hair follicles are permanently damaged. Medicines may help and work best if started in the early stages of hair loss. They can slow or stop hair loss and, in some cases, stimulate hair growth. It may be several months before hair regrowth begins and if treatment is stopped, hair loss will continue as before.

Medicines for hair loss include:

• minoxidil lotion – available from a pharmacist without a prescription

• finasteride tablets – have a hormone effect that may help some men.Finasteride must be prescribed by a doctor

• spironolactone and cyproterone tablets – have a hormone effect that may help some women. They must be prescribed by a doctor.

Wigs, hair transplants or scalp reduction surgery may be options if medicines do not help.

Self care

People’s reactions to hair loss are very personal. Some people become very distressed, as hair loss affects their body image and self esteem. Other people are not concerned by hair loss. If you feel distressed, talk to a doctor.

• Remember that treatments for hair loss take time to work.

• Handle your hair gently.

• Remember skin on the scalp is easily sunburned. Always wear a hat when outside, and apply at least SPF 30+ sunscreen to exposed skin.

• Be careful to protect your scalp as exposed skin on the scalp is easily damaged.

• Learn and use relaxation techniques.

• Eat regular, healthy meals, including plenty of fruits, vegetables and wholegrain foods. Limit foods high in fat, sugar or salt.
