Who was the kind stranger?

Roslyn Williams would like to thank and offer to repay the woman who covered her grocery bill

On a Saturday evening in late August, longtime local Roslyn Williams was at IGA New Lambton about to pay for her shopping when she accidentally dropped her debit card. A woman in the queue picked it up and immediately ran out of the store. The card was later used at another shop in the area before being reported stolen. Roslyn was left shocked and confused by the incident. Then something incredible happened… continued on page 4

Thanks Knights!

I am writing this on the train from Sydney to Newcastle after witnessing a famous win over Penrith by our town’s NRL side. Twelve months ago, the Newcastle Knights were at absolute rock bottom, holding the dreaded wooden spoon and agreeing to part way with their coach. Now, regardless of what happens when the final siren sounds against the Sydney Roosters on the first Sunday in October, the Knights’ 2026 season will be celebrated as a profound success. New coach Justin Holbrook has engineered a fairytale turnaround that defied every expert prediction. We didn’t just crawl out of the cellar; we stormed our way into the grand final. The grit and character embedded in this squad were perfectly illustrated in a breathtaking preliminary final victory over the Penrith Panthers. Down to 12 players for the entire second half, they dug deep, held the perennial favourites scoreless after the break, and showed the kind of resilience that defines our city. Led brilliantly by Kalyn Ponga and energised by the heroics of Sandon Smith, this team has given Newcastle something far more valuable than a trophy—they have restored our collective pride. They play with a fearlessness and passion that perfectly mirrors the spirit of our community. Should the trophy come our way that would just ice the cake. Win or lose in the grand final this group of men have etched themselves into Newcastle folklore. They have proven that with belief, hard work, and a community rallying behind you, no mountain is too high to climb. thelocalnewcastle.com.au

Spring clean for park

Volunteers at a Clean Up Day in Lambton Park. The Great Spring Clean Up is Sunday 18 October Lambton Park and the Ker-rai (creek) which runs through it will again enjoy a Spring Clean Up event this month. Lambton Residents Group is hosting the event on Sunday 18 October under the auspices of the Great Spring Clean Up. “Now is the time to remove litter before it washes into our waterways, harms wildlife and spreads further through our environment.” Pip said. Mark Brooker, Ward 3 councillor for City of Newcastle and coordinator/supervisor of the Great Spring Clean Up event said “We are so lucky to have Lambton Park in our neighbourhood. It’s a beautiful park that we can all be proud of. And we know it’s clean and tidy most of the time.” “If you can spare an hour or so on a Sunday morning to help

keep your park even cleaner and tidier please join us.” The Spring Clean Up event at Lambton Park will run from 9.30 until about 11am on Sunday 18 October. New Lambton landslip update

City of Newcastle (CN) is proposing to amend the planning controls for development applications located in the area immediately surrounding the New Lambton landslip zone. The amendment would require landslide and landslip risk to be considered for land in the area that has been identified as potentially susceptible to future movement. This will ensure future development is appropriately assessed and designed to manage risk. The proposal responds to the publicly available findings of the detailed geotechnical investigation that was completed following the May 2025 natural disaster, which confirmed it as

the largest residential landslip in Australian history. CN contacted owners of the properties that may be affected by the change to provide additional information and discuss the proposed planning controls. The planning proposal was endorsed by Council at its September meeting and has been submitted to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure for determination. If approved by the NSW Government, the planning proposal will be publicly exhibited, with affected property owners, nearby landowners and the wider community given the opportunity to provide a

submission. Council will then consider all submissions before making a final decision. Ongoing monitoring on site has not recorded any significant movement or trends that indicate the size of the landslip zone has increased. Discussions continue between CN and the NSW Reconstruction Authority regarding funding for compensation to affected residents as well as demolition and stabilisation work. Whilst the timing of an approved funding program is still to be determined CN CEO Jeremy Bath said in a public hearing in September that he “would expect that we have a very positive outcome, or resolution even, by Christmas time.”

Letters to

Everybody needs “good neighbours”

The president of the Newcastle Basketball Association says they want to be “good neighbours” to the residents living around Wallarah and Blackley Ovals. Unfortunately the proposed Hunter Indoor Sports Centre sounds more like the neighbour from hell than a good neighbour. Imagine moving next door to a 12-court sports centre: operating hours extending beyond normal residential regulations, lighting throughout the night, hundreds of daily vehicle movements, and Turton Road potentailly reduced to a snail’s pace. Then there’s the inspired design, featuring windows between the courts and corridor. Because when you’re building next to homes, what better way to contain the noise than to leave openings between noisy indoor courts and the external windows?

Page 6 > The Local > October 2026

Parking is another little gift for the neighbourhood. With insufficient on-site spaces vistors may simply have to find somewhere to park in the surrounding residential streets. And let’s not forget the enormous expanse of concrete in a flood-prone area, increasing stormwater runoff when heavy rain arrives. But apparently this is what being a “good neighbour” looks like. The ballooning project cost also raises an obvious question: was this location chosen in desparation and the problems left to be sorted out later? Perhaps it’s time to stop trying to make a square peg fit a very unsuitable hole. Good neighbours think about the people already living next door. Hillary Oliver - New Lambton

Newcastle Basketball’s president, Erica James, spoke on NBN News last month about the basketball stadium proposed for New Lambton. It was interesting that she commented: “This is a suburban area. We’re going to have neighbours and we want to be good neighbours..” It’s reassuring to know that local residents won’t be treated by Newcastle Basketball as just another issue to be dealt with. But being a good neighbour doesn’t mean having a party with bright lights, whistles and amplified noise until 11pm every night. Good neighbours don’t invite so many people over that there is no parking in the streets for other neighbours. They don’t have cars coming and going seven nights a week, shining headlights into neighbours’ homes, forcing people to close their blinds and curtains. They don’t build a 16-metre high building next to homes that have an 8.5-metre maximum height. Ms James acknowledges that the new stadium will be in a suburban area. My advice then on being a good neighbour would be to fit into the neighbourhood, not expect the neighbourhood to change to fit around you. MAYORAL

Matters with Councillor Gavin Morris Lord Mayor of Newcastle

Fighting for Newcastle’s share

Last month I made Newcastle’s case in two very different rooms. The first was in Singapore, with the Hunter’s first coordinated trade mission, led by Newcastle Airport. Our city owns half Newcastle Airport, which has just celebrated the first birthday of its international terminal. Singapore’s leaders told us they want to deal with the Hunter as one region, with one voice. So that’s how we went, with one message: Newcastle and the Hunter are the best places to visit and do business. That means more visitors in our hotels and restaurants, better pathways for local businesses into Asia, and a stronger case for direct flights. The second room is closer to home. Financial Assistance Grants are Commonwealth money, shared amongst Councils by the NSW Local Government Grants Commission. These funds help fix roads, maintain parks, run libraries and keep pools open.

Proposed changes to the methodology used to decide those grants will see Newcastle’s annual grant drop from $15.6 million to $6.1 million a year. That’s a cut of more than 60 per cent. At the same time other council areas in the state will have their grants increased. Now we’re not saying rural and remote councils don’t need help. They do. But ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’ isn’t the answer. And Peter here is every Newcastle ratepayer. The real problem is that the grant pool is too small. Council has unanimously backed returning these grants to one per cent of Commonwealth tax revenue. Let’s see that money first. Winning new opportunities and standing up for what we’ve got aren’t separate jobs. They’re the same one: making sure Newcastle gets its fair share now and into the future. As Lord Mayor, and on behalf of every resident and ratepayer, I take that very seriously. In closing, big congratulations to the Newcastle Northstars, our 2026 Goodall Cup champions! Best ice hockey team in the country. And of course to our Newcastle Knights. What can I say? What an NRL Finals series that was.

What’s on at Newcastle Theatre Co this month?

The next stage production from Lambton’s own Newcastle Theatre Company is A Broadcast Coup. Mike is the undisputed ‘King’ of mid-morning radio. He’s been on a two-

week sabbatical to Fiji, for an anger management program, and can’t wait to pick up where he left off – belittling the station manager, flirting with the new young trainee producer and basically say-

Waratah Benevolent Asylum

In December 1884 a number of well-known ladies from two charitable groups, the Newcastle Relief Society and the Women’s Crusade, called a public meeting in Newcastle to form a Benevolent Society with the aim of constructing an asylum to care for the poor and destitute of Newcastle. The society quickly sprang into action, and in

Sonia Hornery MP State Member for Wallsend

March 1885 opened a temporary asylum in two rented houses in Parry Street, Cooks Hill, declaring their one great aim was “to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and afford a temporary shelter for the homeless and friendless.” Although extra buildings were added in the following years, it was clear that a larger site was needed. In 1891 the government granted the Society five acres of land at Waratah. Architects G Sanders and Son drew up plans however it was to be another five years before sufficient funds were raised to construct a new asylum. In the meantime, thanks to the generosity of the Arnott and Henderson families, in 1894 the Society erected two small double cottages at Waratah, providing much needed accommodation for elderly and impoverished married couples in a time before the age pension existed. After raising sufficient funds from donations and government grants, the Society awarded a contract to builders Davis and Sons, and in May 1896 Colonial Secretary James Brunker laid the ceremonial foundation stone for the Newcastle Benevolent Asylum and Lying-in Hospital at Waratah. The contractors completed construction within a year, and on 6 May 1897 before a crowd of 3000 people, the Colonial Governor Lord Hampden officially opened the new building. The Benevolent Society operated the asylum until 1934, when the NSW government assumed control of the site under the name of The Newcastle Benevolent Hospital. HELP with Elaine Abery

of Unravelling Red Tape

Aggressive magpies Dear Here to Help, Every year, magpies seem to start attacking people earlier and for longer. In Newcastle, there are some particularly aggressive magpies that regularly draw blood and have even been known to break large chunks from helmets. At Adamstown train station, the magpie attacks people using the pedestrian overpass as well as nearby Park Rd for 3 months! I have tried all the so-called suggestions to reduce magpie attacks, but none of them work, and this is famously shown in a youtube video where a woman who tries every so-called tactic to reduce magpie attacks is aggressively swooped again and again. Surely, government can do something to help protect innocent people from these dangerous birds!

Thanks for your message. As I’m sure you are aware, magpies are native birds protected under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. It is an offence to harm the birds, collect their eggs or harm their young without formal licenses or approvals. The NSW government is responsible for dealing with magpies that are a serious menace. You can find more information here, including how to notify the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. Some local councils also suggest you notify NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service here. Many local councils have webpages dedicated to harmful magpies, but Newcastle City Council is not one of them. You can lodge feedback or a request to Newcastle City Council at https://newcastle.nsw. gov.au/ Interestingly, local council and State government webpages that talk about how to deal with magpie attacks offer contradictory advice. Some pages say “Try to keep an eye on the magpie while walking carefully away. Magpies are less likely to swoop if you look at them.” Other pages say “Avoid making eye contact.” It seems you are right and any advice, apart from “avoid the area” is just urban myths. Like so many things, the more people who contact government about the issue, the higher the chance government will act and also the sooner government is likely to act. When you contact government, include specific details, including photos of physical damage to yourself and/or property (like the broken helmet you mention). There are three parts of government where you can lodge aggressive magpie complaints (local council, Department of Climate Change and National Parks) and so to ensure that the message gets to the appropriate person as quickly as possible for action, contact all three.

MONEY

Matters with Dominic Brown

from Nest Financial Solutions

The 10/30/60 principle

When people think about retirement planning, the main focus tends to be on building your super. Over your working life you make contributions, watch your investments grow and then wonder if you’ll have enough when you finally retire. However the decisions you make in retirement can be just an important as the ones you made while saving for it. This is shown in the 10/30/60 principle of retirement income which is based on research first developed by investment managers in the late 1980s. The 10/30/60 principle is intended more as useful illustration rather than a universal fact that applies to everyone. Surprisingly though, it suggests that around 10% of the money you spend in retirement comes from the contributions you made during your

working life. Around 30% comes from the investment earnings your money generated before you retired. The remaining 60% can come from the investment earnings your money continues to generate during retirement. In other words, the majority of your retirement income may be produced after you’ve stopped working. That’s why retirement isn’t the finish line for investing— it’s simply a new phase. Many people become more conservative with their investments once they retire, often because they’re worried about market ups and downs. While it’s important to manage risk, being too cautious can create a different problem. If your money isn’t continuing to generate a return, it may struggle to keep up with inflation and provide the income you need over what could be a retirement lasting several decades. This is where good financial planning can make a real difference. Retirement isn’t just about drawing in income. It’s about finding the right balance between generating returns, managing risk and ensuring your money lasts the full length of your retirement.

PHARMACY

Matters by Anthony Piggott

of Piggott’s Pharmacies: Blackbutt, Branxton, Huntlee, Lambton and Merewether

Dandruff

Dandruff is the common flaking of the scalp — visible as white or oily skin flakes in the hair and on clothing. It happens when the scalp sheds more dead skin cells than usual; these mix with natural scalp oils and clump into flakes that may fall onto shoulders. Dandruff can affect anyone at any age, is common in children but increases around puberty and is more frequent in males. It often worsens in winter and improves in summer. Dandruff is not dangerous, does not cause baldness, and is not contagious.

Signs and symptons

Typical signs include small white or oily flakes on the scalp, hair, eyebrows, beard, neck or shoulders, and often an itchy scalp. The exact cause is unclear but may involve a common scalp yeast that irritates skin and increases shedding. Several factors can worsen dandruff: stress, seasonal changes (especially winter), allergies or sensitivities, hormonal influences, oily skin, illness, certain medical conditions (for example Parkinson’s disease), and a weakened immune system.

Is it dandruff?

A flaky scalp can also be due to other skin

Page 24 > The Local > October 2026

conditions, so correct diagnosis matters. Dry skin produces small, less oily flakes. Contact dermatitis from hair products causes red, itchy flaking. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a greasier, redder form with white or yellow scales affecting oil-rich areas (scalp, eyebrows, behind ears, chest, groin); dandruff is a mild form of this. Psoriasis forms thick, silvery scales and can affect the scalp as well as elbows and knees. Tinea (scalp ringworm) causes scaly patches and hair loss. Cradle cap describes yellow crusting on infants’ scalps. Treatments differ between these conditions.

Shampoos

Many cases of dandruff improve with proper scalp care and medicated shampoos, though improvement can take weeks. For mild dandruff, frequent washing with a mild, non-medicated shampoo can reduce oil and scale; gently massage the scalp and rinse thoroughly. Overthe-counter anti-dandruff shampoos and lotions— some containing antifungals—are available, but can be harsh, so follow label directions or ask a pharmacist. A doctor can prescribe stronger treatments for severe dandruff.

Self care

Self-care tips include shampooing often if the scalp is scaly, brushing hair regularly, washing hair after exercise, limiting oily styling products, and avoiding alcohol-containing gels and heat styling that dry the scalp. Using a matching anti-dandruff conditioner or a leave-in conditioner can prevent excess dryness. Managing stress and eating a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins and low-fat dairy may help. See a doctor if your scalp is red, painful or bleeding, if you have patches of hair loss, thick flaky patches, a body rash at the same time, or if non-prescription treatments fail after 2–3 weeks or make things worse.

Roll out of AML/CTF that

started on 1 July 2026

As highlighted previously, significant changes in property transactions were introduced on 1 July 2026, as the Government rolled out the second phase of the “Anti Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing Act 2006.” Australia’s property market is a major attraction for criminals to launder money and commencing 1 July 2026, real estate professionals, lawyers and conveyancers now need to collect information from vendors and purchasers involved in property transactions and report to Austrac (the “Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre”). Your lawyer or conveyancer must carry out

initial and ongoing “customer due diligence.” This includes (but is not limited to) obtaining identification from you and establishing details of who will be the “owner” of the property. The majority of transactions may be straightforward however, the more complex transactions involving Companies and Trusts will require additional levels of identification. Any transaction involving physical currency (AUD$10,000 or more), international funds transfers or any suspected suspicious activity or transactions must all be reported. For you the consumer, this may mean more detailed identity verification, a review of large or unusual funds transfers and transparency regarding the source of your funds. This stricter ongoing process is to prevent criminals from disguising illegally obtained funds as legitimate income and to protect the Australian property market. Lawyers and conveyancers are required to meet the verification requirements, there are no exemptions. If you are planning a property transaction, please speak to your lawyer or conveyancer about the changes and be prepare by having the required documents.
