Year slips by

The first anniversary of the New Lambton Landslip passed with some media attention late last month.

23 May 2025 is a day that forever altered the lives of sixteen households in Russell Rd, Victoria Street, Baker Street and Portland Place.

On that day, or more correctively that night, the earth shifted, sixteen families were urgently evacuated from homes, parts of roads were closed and temporary fencing installed. More than a year on their homes remain out of reach, the fencing looking anything but temporary.

The frustration and anxiety they have endured is palpable. I have met with a number of the impacted residents recently, firstly with my Councillor hat on, and then with regard to The Local.

Brave is the only word to describe them. The rest of us cannot imagine leaving our homes for what we think might be an hour, a day or perhaps a weekend.

Then it’s weeks, months and now one year. It’s now apparent that there is at least another year ahead before compensation is finalised for these people for the land they can never build on and live on again.

These households face more than property loss.

They have lost a sense of safety and the simple comforts of home — neighbours’ faces, familiar sounds, and the small rituals that make a place liveable. Temporary living situations will inevitably strain budgets despite the welcome Government assistance.

I am confident that the major players in the recovery phases of this situation, City of Newcastle and the NSW Reconstruction Authority, have built a strong working relationship in recent months.

That is refreshing after the finger-pointing, in both directions, that was happening earlier in the piece.

Special business funds available in New Lambton

Local people with a flair for promotions and events, as well as businesses in New Lambton can this month apply for a share in $50,000 worth of funding as part of City of Newcastle’s Special Business Rates program.

Special Business Rates (SBR) are collected from businesses and reserved exclusively for the promotion, beautification and economic development of the business precinct.

The New Lambton SBR Precinct includes businesses locating on Alma Rd, Regent St, Victoria St and Russell Rd at New Lambton.

Funding for the most creative and innovative project proposals is distributed through a competitive application process.

This generally happens on an annual basis, or once enough SBR funds have been collected to provide meaningful outcomes in business precincts such as New Lambton.

Previous examples of projects supported by SBR funding in New Lambton include the creation of the mural on New Lambton Library and standalone

The mural on the side of the New Lambton Library building was funded by a Special Business Rates grant in 2022 smart gardening systems on local shopfronts in 2022 and a free family event known as the New Lambton Little Festival, as well as a public performance of Voices of Joan by Whale Chorus in New Lambton during the New Annual festival in 2023.

New Lambton Landslip...

City of Newcastle (CN) and NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) are continuing work towards a funding package to enable the demolition of properties affected by the New Lambton landslip one year ago and compensate residents for their land.

Residents and landowners were updated on the next stages of recovery at a faceto-face meeting in May as they prepared to mark the one-year anniversary of the event.

City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath said progress on the recovery phase and discussions with the RA have moved forward significantly since the release of the geotechnical report in February.

“The report proved to be a turning point in our relationship

with the RA as it demonstrated the critical severity of the landslip site,” Mr Bath said.

“Residents will soon move from insurance-funded relocation to a 12-month relocation package funded by the NSW Government.

It’s important that we recognise and thank the NSW Government for supporting the residents in this way.

“We continue to work with the RA on behalf of the residents to identify a long-term solution that stabilises the ground. Sadly, these works won’t permit future development on the site.

“Given the complexity of the funding arrangements, which will require State and Federal contributions, and are not committed yet, we believe demolition works at the site

aren’t likely to commence until early in 2027.

“While long-term recovery is ultimately the responsibility of the NSW Government, we are committed to collaborating in our support of the affected residents and landowners.”

CEO Kate Fitzgerald said the RA is working closely with CN, residents and landowners affected by the New Lambton landslip.

“Recovery from events like this takes time, and progress can at times feel slow, but the RA remains committed to supporting Council and residents as they consider future solutions,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

Detailed geotechnical investigations and ongoing monitoring instigated by CN have helped inform evidence-based decisions about public safety, public infrastructure, site stability and potential long-term recovery options.

Mr Bath said CN remains committed to working with the impacted residents, landowners and neighbours as the complex recovery efforts continue.

“We recognise the hardship faced by residents who have had to leave their homes and will continue to advocate on their behalf and keep them informed while assessments and recovery options are progressed by the RA. Swamp Film Festival at Wetlands The Hunter Wetlands Centre will celebrate World Environment Day with the launch of Swamp Film Festival - a new weekend event of environmental films, creative activities and conversations showcasing the landscapes, wildlife and stories of the Hunter Estuary.

Held on 6-7 June, the twoday festival features a packed program of locally-produced films, filmmaker workshops, expert speakers and handson activities for families, transforming the Hunter Wetlands Centre into a lively hub of visual environmental storytelling.

Coinciding with World Environment Day, the festival focuses on inspiring visitors to explore, protect and respect the

region’s wetlands ecosystems.

Hunter Wetlands Centre’s General Manager, James Wilson said the festival celebrates an ecosystem that is often overlooked despite its environmental importance and striking natural beauty.

“People hear the word ‘swamp’ and think of something ugly. But wetlands are some of the most diverse, lifefilled and important ecosystems on earth. Swamp Film Festival is about reclaiming that word and celebrating these places through film and visual storytelling. From mangrove forests and migratory birds to community action, conservation projects and changing waterways, the Hunter Estuary is full of stories worth sharing.”

events is an immersive Q&A exploring the past, present and future of the Hunter Estuary. Featuring a panel of environmental and film experts alongside rare archive photos and historic footage, the session will take audiences on a journey through the social and environmental transformation of the lower Hunter and provide insights on how climate change may shape our region’s future.

The festival will conclude on Sunday afternoon with a special screening session of locally produced environmental films in the Centre’s newly refurbished 50-seat BHP Theatrette.

These past weeks have been about listening, learning, and most importantly, getting to work for you.

What has stood out to me immediately is the dedication of Council staff and the strong sense of community throughout our suburbs. There is a genuine willingness, from people at every level, to roll up their sleeves and contribute to the city’s future.

And what a future we have. Newcastle continues to evolve, with important work underway and exciting plans on the horizon, from our city centre and the mall, to Broadmeadow, Honeysuckle, Wickham, Wallsend and beyond.

At the same time, it’s just as important that we continue to focus on the basics and ensure every suburb feels supported and looked after. That balance matters, and that’s a commitment I made to you all.

Letters to Young e-biker behaviour will settle There have been plenty of articles wanting to ban or limit e-bikes, which highlight limitations in Newcastle that can be fixed.

One video showed a hundred teens riding around a golf course in Sydney. This was an impressive display of organisational skills and the location was perfect for children. Unfortunately, this potential park is now for the exclusive use of members, as Local Government policies promote privatisation of public spaces. The teen’s act of civil disobedience gives me hope.

Teens on e-bikes disrupted traffic on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I explained to my children how protests used to be legal, that I cycled with Critical Mass, deliberately disrupting traffic every Friday

Australian Automobile Association, the average cost of running a car was $23,389 in 2025. E-bikes carrying child passengers and shopping bags could replace the second car for families and improve single adult’s savings.

The benefits for society are reduced traffic, noise, pollution, road maintenance costs and increased free parking space.

Australia is conservative, adopting electric cars 10-15 years behind Europe and Asia. E-bikes and scooter were adopted in Asia ten years ago, and Europe has the cycleways to make the transition smoothly.

Australia may try to legislate to prevent the adoption of e-bikes but economics and international uptake will force Australia into the future.

While antisocial behaviour on the e-bikes is annoying, the novelty of the technology will pass.

In five years, when e-bikes are common and the majority of riders are older, young riders’ behaviour will settle.

Next year, my son will ride his new e-bike to explore Newcastle, meet friends, attend sporting activities, school and shop. His independence means more free time and energy for my wife and I. Stephen Gibberd - New Lambton

Letters to Traffic chaos if stadium proceeds Newcastle has a new Lord Mayor, and the ill-conceived plan to build the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre on Wallarah and Blackley Ovals has, for now, been quietly pushed to the backburner. The delay has been caused by the proponents who seem to have chalked up more postponements than a rain-soaked cricket season in responding to the Department of Planning’s requests for additional information.

I believe that is why there has been such a delay.

Events after Newcastle Knights matches and concurrent hockey games, highlight the very real and immediate problem of traffic and parking in New Lambton. The need for cars and buses to park legally and sensibly is obvious; the current reality is anything but.

Football patron coaches are now parked along Turton Road - precisely where the proposed sports centre driveway is meant to go. If the planned new stadium proceeds, where exactly are those coaches expected to park?

Other buses spill into surrounding streets, especially Monash Road, and often doubleparking and adding to the chaos of illegally parked cars, particularly over driveways.

It has been clear that any further development, particularly the proposed Hunter Indoor Sports Centre, will be absolutely chaotic for traffic and parking in New Lambton.

In 1941 the federal government passed the National Fitness Act with the aim of encouraging physical exercise and good health across the nation.

The Lambton National Fitness Committee formed in September 1944, and immediately set to work - starting gymnasium classes, advocating for improvements to facilities in Lambton Park, and proposing a baby health centre.

In October 1944 they selected a site in Lambton Park adjacent to the former council chambers.

On 29 November 1947 Lord Mayor of Newcastle Harry Quinlan officiated at the opening of the building, and the memorial tablets on the entrance gates were unveiled.

Initially the centre opened for consultations one day a week, and by 1951 this increased to two days a week with the centre receiving 3500 visits each year.

The baby health centre operated for over six decades until vacated by NSW Health in 2014.

From 2017 to 2023 the Lambton Park Tea Rooms occupied the building.

In 2025 City of Newcastle initiated major renovations to add a commercial kitchen, open plan dining space, front pergola, and a rear deck overlooking the park playground area.

In April 2026 the building re-opened as First Light café, the name alluding to Lambton in 1890 being the first suburb in Newcastle to install electric street lighting.

Those who visit the café and sit under the front pergola have an interesting reason why they can do so. When the health centre was first proposed in 1944 “the committee wanted the building well back from the footpath, to give space for a garden in which to plant a rose bush for each baby born in Lambton.”

The birthday rose garden never eventuated, however the space allocated for it can be enjoyed by café patrons today.

Thank you. That is an excellent question.

Most people are reactive; they wait for the horse to bolt and then complain they can’t get it back in the stable. But we can anticipate that the horse will bolt and formulating different ways to prevent it escaping.

As you point out, this creates a lot of reverse workflows. And this time and effort could be better spent creating positive outcomes.

So, how do we step in and help government make better decisions in the first place?

Perhaps the best way to explain this is to talk about when I worked for government, designing and implementing government decisions. We consulted about most of our decisions before public announcement.

It was the generally same group of mostly middleaged white men who turned up to each meeting, saying pretty much the same thing they said the last time we saw them, with more or less passion.

Sometimes, they represented the same group as the last time we saw them. Sometimes, they represented a different group to the last time we saw them and funnily enough “swore” that their new opinion was the correct one.

I went into my first public consultation with wellthought-out questions for the consultation panel.

Most of the attendees responded with a stream of words that were largely unrelated to my questions.

However, from time to time, someone would turn up to a public consultation and try to answer my questions. Someone would jot down my questions and tell me they didn’t have the answer then and there, but could they look into it further and come back to me.

These people stood out from the crowd – they seemed interested in the public policy outcome for the whole Australian community and for the country’s future. They were willing to spend their time and effort researching and then give me an honest and well-thought-out response.

These were the business cards that stayed stickytaped to my computer monitor. These were the people I developed a trusting relationship with. And, as time went on, I rang them earlier and earlier in the policy development process.

So, if you want to help build the stable to keep the horse from bolting, be the “sticky-taped” business card. Develop a trusting relationship with government public policy officials and provide them with well-thought-out policy input and proposals that benefit the Australian community as a whole.

What’s this lump?

One of the most common issues people will bring their pets in for is a ‘lump check’. That is, you have identified a new lump somewhere on your pet that was not there before.

Finding a lump on your dog (or, less commonly, your cat) can be worrying, and warrants a

veterinary visit to assess it.

Important questions we will want to know is; how long it has been there for, whether it has grown or changed at all in that time, and (most importantly) if it is bothering your pet in any way.

Fatty lumps, cysts, warts and other harmless growths are common, especially in older dogs, while young dogs are more likely to get infectious or inflammatory masses.

However, appearance alone is not enough to tell whether a lump is harmless or something more serious, so new or changing lumps should always be checked. The most common test we perform is called a fine needle aspirate, where we take a sample and look at the cells under the microscope to help categorize the lump.

If this test is inconclusive or concerning, it is followed up with a biopsy sample which gets sent away for more detailed analysis.

It is especially important to book an appointment if a lump is growing quickly, bleeding, ulcerated, painful, or interfering with movement.

Early assessment can make treatment easier and give owners peace of mind, so a good rule is simple: if you find a new lump, don’t ignore it.

Dividends and franking credits

Dividends are the regular payments companies make to shareholders from their profits. For many retirees, they form the backbone of passive income — but in Australia, we get an extra benefit: franking credits.

Here’s how it works. Australian companies generally pay 30% tax on their profits. When they pass these profits to shareholders through a dividend, they attach a franking credit which represents that tax already paid. If your personal tax rate is lower than the company rate, as it often is in retirement,

Sinus problems Sinuses are air-filled spaces in the bones around the nose that connect to the nose and throat.

When the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen, or mucus drainage is blocked, sinus problems can occur. This condition is known as sinusitis or rhinosinusitis. It may be acute (lasting days or weeks) or chronic (lasting months or years). Most people recover from acute sinusitis within about three weeks, and symptoms can often be managed with medicines available from a pharmacist.

Common symptoms include a blocked nose, facial pain or pressure, headaches, post-nasal drip, coughing, yellow or green mucus, loss of smell or taste, tiredness, sore throat, ear pressure, bad breath, toothache, nausea and fever. Pain often worsens when bending forward or lying down.

Sinus problems can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, cigarette smoke, chemicals, air pressure changes, some medicines, stress, dental problems and other medical conditions.

Swelling inside the nose and sinuses, excess mucus or physical blockages such as nasal polyps can

prevent normal drainage.

Many treatments are available to relieve symptoms. Saline sprays, drops and rinses help clear mucus and reduce congestion. They are generally safe, well tolerated and can be used with other medicines. Decongestants, available as tablets, syrups, sprays and drops, reduce swelling inside the nose and sinuses. However, decongestant nasal sprays or drops should not be used for more than three consecutive days, as overuse can worsen congestion.

Pain relief may be provided by paracetamol or ibuprofen. Some sinus medicines combine pain relievers with decongestants. Aspirin should not be given to children under 16 unless advised by a doctor.

Antihistamines can help reduce a runny nose and post-nasal drip, particularly when symptoms are caused by allergies. Some types may cause drowsiness, although non-drowsy options are also available.

Corticosteroid nasal sprays can reduce inflammation and help prevent sinusitis, especially when linked to allergies such as hay fever. These sprays may begin working within hours but often require several days of regular use for maximum benefit. In severe cases, a doctor may prescribe corticosteroid tablets for a short period. Antibiotics may also be prescribed if a bacterial infection is suspected.

Simple self-care measures can also help. Drink plenty of fluids to thin mucus, rest well, and use steam inhalations or a warm compress to ease congestion and discomfort. Blow your nose gently, avoid smoking and limit alcohol, as it can worsen symptoms. Reducing exposure to allergens and irritants such as dust, mould, pollen and cigarette smoke may also help prevent sinus problems.

RSV: A Common Virus with Significant Impact Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a highly contagious respiratory virus that affects the lungs and airways. In most individuals, it presents as a mild, selflimiting illness characterised by symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, and low-grade fever. However, in certain populations, RSV can lead to more severe disease.

Infants, older adults, and individuals with underlying cardiac, respiratory, or immunocompromising conditions are at increased risk of complications, including bronchiolitis and pneumonia, which may necessitate hospitalisation.

Transmission occurs via respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated

surfaces, contributing to its rapid spread in community settings, particularly during the cooler months.

Management is primarily supportive, including adequate hydration, rest, and symptomatic relief. Preventive measures remain essential and include hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and staying home when unwell. In addition, vaccination and preventive immunisation options for eligible populations play an important role in reducing the risk of severe illness.

While RSV is often mild, its potential impact on vulnerable groups underscores the importance of awareness and preventive strategies.

From May 15, 2026, the Australian Government has added free RSV vaccinations (Arexvy®) to the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for adults aged 75 and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 and over. The maternal vaccine (Abrysvo®) is also free via the NIP for pregnant women (28–36 weeks) to protect infants.
