A finial finally y Readers may recall a story in The Local in July 2023 regarding the ornamental piece missing from the Lambton Mechanics Institute building in Elder Street since the Newcastle Earthquake of 1989. In late August a project to restore the missing finial or urn of the heritage-listed landmark was completed. Dr Ron Robinson chair of the Lambton Mechanics Institute Land Manager group told The Local that it had been a long process, but he was pleased to have it done now and “restore the dignity of our beloved building. “ A Melbourne firm Melgrand was identified as having the specialised skills and experience to duplicate the ornamental urn. Dr Lloyd Pilgrim, Head of the Discipline of Civil Engineering, Surveying and Environmental Engineering at the University of Newcastle was enlisted to assist with determining what the finials originally continued on page 14

Lucky 13
I was listening to the radio as I was driving recently and came in part way through a discussion about street numbers. I did not catch the beginning or the end of the segment, so I’m unsure where it began or ended, or what the actual topic for discussion was. But I did hear someone call in to say that in the Hornsby Shire, on the northern edge of Sydney, there are no houses with the number 13, and that there never has been. I had a little chuckle to myself, both with my councillor hat on and as a generally nonsuperstitious person, that a Town Clerk or perhaps more correctly the Council he served 120 years ago, had made a rule that number 13 was outlawed, presumably because it was unlucky, and that all these years later it has stuck. I guess it’s not easy to make everyone from number 15 onwards renumber their properties. So even if a less superstitious modern council wanted to they’re probably stuck with it. Imagine the parcel delivery error rate that would cause! I later asked the internet (as you do) and it turns out this is a myth. I then went to Google Maps (as you do) just to confirm that and found quite a number of streets in Hornsby that have a number 13. There are plenty of streets that don’t have a 13, but it’s clear that there has never been a blanket ban. I checked locally (as you do) and I am pleased to report to readers that in the City of Newcastle there are many number 13s. There are some streets where the 13 is skipped but most streets have one. In celebration of that three local number 13s are this month’s lucky letterboxes. Turn to page 10 of this issue to see them proudly defying any triskaidekaphobia lingering in our community.

Laura dancing for Stars
New Lambton resident Laura Jackel, founder of The Good News Hunter, a social media platform dedicated to celebrating the people, places and positive stories that make our community such a great place to live is trying her hand, or feet really, at dancing. “I was honoured to be selected as one of Cancer Council’s STARS of Newcastle for 2026. That means I’ve committed to raising $10,000 for Cancer Council NSW before taking to the stage on 26 September for a dance performance. That is definitely outside my comfort zone!” Laura told The Local. “The past year has been very challenging for my family and our neighbours after 16 homes were lost in the New Lambton landslip. “Starting The Good News Hunter became my way of finding hope again, choosing to focus on the good happening around us, even when life felt anything but. What started as a personal project has grown into something that connects thousands of people across our region every day, and now I’d love to channel that community spirit into raising vital funds for Cancer Council. “Like so many families, cancer has touched the lives of people I love, and I’m determined to do everything I can to help.” Laura said. To help towards her fundraising goal Laura held a Gold Class Movie Night in August. If you would like to help Laura to reach her $10,000 fundraising target go to: https://stars. cancercouncil.com.au/fundraisers/ LauraJackel/stars-of-newcastle or the QR code at right.

Ocean Baths plan unveiled City of Newcastle has refined its design for the final stage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade, ensuring the revitalised community facility is purposebuilt for generations to enjoy. Key changes have been made to the layout and location of the amenities, design of the roof and retention of heritage elements, providing a balance between preservation, functionality and community expectations. A DA for the final stage of the revitalisation project, including the pavilion buildings, upper promenade and surrounding areas, was lodged in November last year. Feedback from Heritage NSW, the Urban Design Review Panel and the community was used to guide the final design.
A more open layout has been introduced to the amenities to make it easier for people to move around, balanced with improved privacy options for users, including children, families and vulnerable people. The pavilion’s roof has also been refined to better balance openness, comfort, privacy and protection from the elements. It features a simplified design and glazed finish that “floats” above the original building to maximise natural light and ventilation, while an engineered timber frame combines strength and durability with a warm, natural appearance. A café and kiosk remain part of the plans in the southern wing of the building, providing sit-down dining and takeaway options, with
the operational plan allowing for earlier opening hours to service the early morning Baths users. City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath said the focus has always been on creating a Newcastle Ocean Baths precinct the whole community can feel proud of. “It’s great to see so much overlap between our redesign and the concept shared with the community recently by the Friends of Newcastle Ocean Baths,” Mr Bath said. “We all want to see the heritage of this much-loved place respected, better access for the community and facilities that will serve Newcastle well into the future. A better plan for Ocean Baths
Newcastle Ocean Baths belongs to us all. Ask any Novocastrian, and you’ll get a story mine goes back to being a kid, swimming out to the old butcher block and being too frightened to swim back! I had to wait, what felt like hours, to be rescued by my grandmother. During the by-election I promised to be a circuit breaker on this issue, and many others in our city.
To listen, get across the detail, and find a way forward this community could get behind, rather than another decade of the same argument. I believe we have. Planning staff have reworked the design with feedback from the community, Heritage NSW, the Heritage Council and the Urban Design Review Panel. It protects the heritage facade at the heart of Newcastle’s identity, while creating amenities that are more open and still private. The roof has been simplified, with a glazed finish that lets in natural light while shielding people from the elements. I acknowledge the passion behind the Friends of Newcastle Ocean Baths’ alternative concept. This was never two camps at war - there is clear common ground, and this revised design reflects that. Here’s what matters now: the amended development application goes on public exhibition shortly, and I would encourage you to have a look and have your say. This is your Ocean Baths too. View the plans and tell us what you think. https://haveyoursay.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/NOB

Back in the swim
Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre has reopened for the new swimming season. Wallsend, Mayfield, Stockton and Beresfield Pools will make a splash from 26 September. City of Newcastle’s acting executive manager community and recreation Donna McGovern said the winter closure provided an important annual period for essential maintenance activity. “We know how much our community values our inland pools as hubs of recreation, connection and education,” Ms McGovern said. “This is why we make the most of the winter closure each year
to undertake a comprehensive program of essential work across all five pools. “Our teams carry out safety upgrades, freshen up the painted surfaces including nonslip areas, service plant and equipment, undertake plumbing repairs and complete pool tile and promenade maintenance. “This ensures we can continue to provide safe, clean and enjoyable aquatic facilities, and enhance the longevity of these ageing community assets.” Additional work is completed depending on the needs of each pool, including a major service of Lambton’s popular splash park feature and new
fencing for the waterslide, while playground maintenance and kiosk improvements at Beresfield will keep the kids safe and happy when they’re out of the water. Wallsend’s 50m pool was emptied over winter to repair floor tiles and replace expansion joints. A detailed inspection of the empty pool shell was completed, while pipe fittings were replaced to reduce the risk of water leakage during power outages in the plantroom. Guttering repairs and security improvements were carried out at Wallsend, while Stockton’s bench seating was replaced to ensure greater visitor comfort.

Urn returns
continued from front page looked like. Using both drone and terrestrial photography of the existing eastern finial and calibrating them against measurements and scans of the remaining sections of the fallen finial, Dr Pilgrim was able to create a point cloud and mesh threedimensional model of the finial. In doing so Dr Pilgrim created a teaching tool for his surveying students on how to scan and measure inaccessible complex objects. The computer modelling was then used by Melgrand to replicate the original shape of the ornaments. A decision was made to not only reinstate the western finial but to replace the original finial from the eastern side of the building as it was showing the signs of 132 years age atop the building. Neil Griffins, former Head of Painting and Decorating at the Newcastle TAFE, painted the replacement finials before installation. It then took delicate crane work and craftsmanship from High Work Services to install the finials while a small crowd of local history enthusiasts gathered below, cameras at the ready. The Lambton Mechanics Institute Land Manager would like to thank the organisations and people that contributed to the success of the project including Dr Lloyd Pilgrim from University of Newcastle, Olver Moreira of Melgrand, Mr Neil Griffins, High Work Services Pty Ltd and the Institute’s neighbours on Elder Street.

THAT WAS THEN This is now
with Lachlan Wetherall
“At the quarry and steam sawmills of T. Russell and Co of Jesmond, the stone is quarried and cut to size by machinery, thereby lessening the cost of production. The firm have their own electric light installation, and thus provision is made for continuous working night and day. The freestone kerbing for monumental purposes is here prepared by a staff of workmen, who are kept busy executing orders. Building masonry forms a good portion of the trade, and when things are brisk from fifteen to twenty hands are engaged.”
Russell’s Quarry North Lambton
Thomas Russell sold his business in 1924 two years before his death in 1926 at the age of 85. Quarrying continued for a few more years but ceased by 1933, when the boiler, steam engine and crane were sold. The abandoned pit filled with water and became a popular spot for local lads to go swimming and catch eels.
In 1871 stonemason Henry Pilkington purchased two acres of land in North Lambton and opened a quarry, one of many he operated in the Newcastle area. Shortly before Pilkington’s death in 1886, Thomas Russell purchased the quarry. He proceeded to modernise and expand the operation, with the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate describing the site in 1896.
Newcastle Council purchased the site in 1950, but with no definite plans for its use. The North Lambton Progress Association unsuccessfully lobbied to have a community hall built on the site. In 1954 they described the area as “very objectionable and a breeding ground for rats and snakes”. Council eventually filled in the site and converted it to a playing field and park by 1966. In September 2025 the Groundswell Collective and City of Newcastle created a Community Tiny Forest in the south portion of the former quarry, planting a large number of native trees, shrubs and grasses.

HELP with Elaine Abery
of Unravelling Red Tape
Government should… Dear Here to Help,
I often hear people criticising particular politicians, all politicians and government in general. I would like to better understand what government should actually do and what is acceptable for government to do. After all, I can’t imagine anyone wants government to take over too many things. For one thing, Australians don’t like being told what to do. For another thing, Australians don’t really like paying tax – although we do like our tax refunds. That’s a great question. One of the key features of Australian democracy is “active and engaged citizens”. This means citizens: • have a voice in our society • can make changes in our society • can participate by getting involved in their communities • can get involved in the work of Parliament. Because citizens vote for politicians, politicians are our elected representatives. Voters can hold politicians accountable. Ways of doing this include changing your vote, writing to/talking to politicians, engaging with government bureaucracy, protests, etc. I have written previous articles on how to better engage with government bureaucracy to ensure that your voice is heard in government’s decisions. The question of what government should and shouldn’t do is really interesting. Government is
Page 20 > The Local > September 2026
a part of our society. So are individuals and the community. It makes sense for government to do things that individuals and the community cannot do for themselves. Abraham Lincoln famously said “the legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but cannot do, at all, or cannot, so well do, for themselves—in their separate, and individual capacities.” In cultures like Sweden, people are prepared to pay higher taxes for government to do more. In cultures like Australia, we prefer that government doesn’t interfere too much with our lives. Fewer Australians think government is needed in their daily lives. That same study says “Australians think government’s most important role is to provide health care for the sick, control our borders and make industry reduce its environmental impact.” What does this mean from a practical perspective? Well, simple things that you can do yourself to improve your life are best done by you. For example, take your own bins out and sweep the road in front of your house when rain is expected, so that water goes down the gutters and is taken away by stormwater systems, reducing the risk of your street, car and home flooding. Councils often have bin assistance programmes for people who need assistance. Community groups, like Landcare, empower people to work together as a group to make their communities better. Landcare is a community-based approach to managing and protecting natural resources. Landcare projects include things like river restoration to improve fish habitat. More complicated things, like border enforcement and transport infrastructure, are best provided by government. These kinds of things are difficult, or impossible, for an individual or a community group, to provide. They are also unlikely to be provided by a business – how could they charge for this? I hope this helps you better understand what government does best and helps you to take a more active role in your community, both in practical and political things.

MONEY
Matters with Dominic Brown
from Nest Financial Solutions
Don’t let fees eat nest egg
For many people, superannuation is something that quietly ticks along in the background. We see our balance from time to time but rarely stop to look at what is happening behind the scenes. One of the most important things to understand is the fees you’re paying. Most super funds charge a range of fees. These can include administration fees, investment fees, transaction fees, performance fees and in some cases, insurance premiums. To make matters more confusing, some of these fees are deducted directly from your balance while others are taken out of the investment returns before those returns are applied
to your account. While fees are a normal part of managing a super fund, they do reduce the amount that remains invested for your future. At first glance, the difference between paying 1.0% per year and 0.7% per year may not seem significant. However, because of the power of compounding, even a small reduction in fees can result in thousands – and sometimes tens of thousands – of dollars more over time. It’s a good reminder that reviewing your super every now and then can be well worth the effort. That said, fees are only one part of the equation. It is just as important to consider how your super is performing. There is little benefit in choosing the cheapest super fund if it is consistently delivering poor investment returns. Choosing the right super fund means finding the right balance. Often people are in the default super fund which their employer set up for them several years ago. Is this super fund providing them with the right balance though? If you would like to understand more about superannuation and the fees you are incurring, then just contact me at Nest Financial Solutions to organise an appointment. GENERAL ADVICE WARNING – This article is merely intended to be educational and informative. It should not be taken as a personal recommendation to you. PHARMACY
Matters by Anthony Piggott
of Piggott’s Pharmacies: Blackbutt, Branxton, Huntlee, Lambton and Merewether
Cold sores
Cold sores are small, blistering lesions that typically develop on or around the mouth. Caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), these common infections can be managed using treatments available at a local pharmacy. There are two primary strains of the virus; type 1 generally leads to oral cold sores, whereas type 2 typically causes genital herpes. Once an individual contracts HSV, the virus remains dormant within nerve cells for life. It periodically reactivates to cause active outbreaks, often after being initially contracted during childhood through skin-to-skin contact like kissing.
Outbreaks are frequently triggered by factors such as sunlight, dry lips, localized skin damage, stress, fatigue, illness, and hormonal changes like menstruation. When a cold sore develops, it typically progresses through four distinct stages. The process begins with a tingling, burning, or itching sensation around the lips or nose. This is followed by the appearance of a red, painful lump that turns into small, fluid-filled blisters. Eventually, these blisters burst and weep fluid before drying up to form an itchy, uncomfortable scab. Without intervention, most sores naturally heal within 7 to 10 days without leaving a permanent scar. The virus is highly contagious and spreads easily through contact with an active sore, blister fluid, or infected saliva. A person can transmit the virus to someone else or accidentally transfer it to other areas of their own body, such as the eyes or genitals. Transmission can even occur when no visible sores are present because the virus can still be active in saliva or on the lips. While there is no definitive cure for cold sores, numerous management methods can alleviate symptoms. Because different stages of an outbreak require specific care, individuals should consult a pharmacist, doctor, or nurse for personalized advice.

Will dispute essentials
There are many contested Estates where the validity of Wills are scrutinised and “eligible persons” seek greater provision from deceased estates. Essential points include: • Consider who are “eligible persons” able to contest your Will; commonly spouses or partners, children, or financially dependent persons. • Blended families and estranged adult children are often involved in Will disputes. • Factors a Court will consider in determining whether a person is entitled to greater provision from an estate include the value of the estate, a claimant’s relationship with the deceased, any provision in the Will to satisfy a claimant’s genuine needs for education, maintenance or advancement, and the competing claims of other persons. • Wills may also be challenged if there is insufficient evidence about the making of the Will including capacity, two witnesses or contents of the Will document. • If you are making a Will obtain advice on how to best protect it against a claim. • If you wish to challenge a Will, obtain advice from a specialist lawyer who considers the facts, advises you on prospects and potential risks, and who works to negotiate a settlement at the lowest possible legal costs. • If you are an Executor of an Estate with a potential Will dispute, seek advice from a specialist lawyer to prevent escalation prior to litigation. If you need a Will prepared or if there is a Will dispute in prospect, make an appointment with a specialist estate lawyer now. To advertise in The Local call Mark on 0455 210 000
