Clean Up’s on The Ker-rai (creek) that runs through Lambton Park will be a Clean Up Australia Day site on Sunday 7 March.

Lambton Residents Group chose to register the site due to the accumulated rubbish that can be seen along the creekline.

Clean Up Australia Day is truly an environmental success story. It was started by avid sailor the late Ian Kiernan. Ian was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish encountered in the oceans of the world. What was started thirty years ago, by an “average Australian bloke” who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard has now become the nation’s largest community-based environmental event.

I can’t make up my mind whether I’m offended or elated.

In mid February, when Facebook deleted the pages of every news media outlet in Australia in response to the Federal Government’s proposed News Media Bargaining Code, The Local’s page was untouched.* The social media giant did flick a switch, initially at least, on pages belonging to the Bureau of Meterology, state health departments, some charities and a number of satirical news websites. Mark Zuckerberg’s definition of news seems a bit odd.

I’m happy to believe that’s why The Local’s page has survived unscathed.

Admittedly The Local has used Facebook many times over the last 7 years to promote local events, share breaking news and of course announce the impending arrival of The Local into your letterbox.

I must say though I am happy in the knowledge that we have not relied on social media to build an audience. Instead we rely on our dedicated team of 25 or so letterbox delivery folks each month to get the news to you. (Thanks again guys!)

Some experts say we are witnessing the height of Facebook’s power right now; that its influence will decline from here as people realise they are being fed a diet which is free of news but filled with cat memes, your former work colleagues’ kids birthday parties and advertising.

Others say this will be a nail in the coffin of news outlets that have become over-reliant or are totally dependent on social media to get their news to consumers. Personally I think it’s a little from column A and a little from column B. * Correct at time of printing. Bypass early works on continue

Properties on the western side Lookout Rd numbered 92 to 110 are being demolished to make way for the Newcastle Inner City Bypass Work has commenced on the next stage of early work for the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.

Delta Group, on behalf of Transport for NSW is carrying out demolition and site clearing work on a number of residential buildings on Lookout Road in New Lambton Heights immediately south of McCaffrey Drive. Some earth work to level the site when

the buildings have been removed will also be done.

Most work will be carried out during the day. Limited work including delivery of machinery may be required outside normal project hours for the safety of workers and road users, and to minimise traffic delays.

A no stopping zone has been established outside the properties

where the work will be carried out.

The bus stop on the western side of Lookout Road in front of number 110 Lookout Road will not be impacted by the work.

Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am and 5pm Saturdays, weather permitting.

This preparatory work is expected to be complete by May.

Hospital security report welcomed State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP (pictured) has welcomed a report into improvements to security in hospitals across NSW, particularly the John Hunter and Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospitals.

The report, completed by the Hon Peter Anderson AM, a former NSW Health Minister, looked at ways to better protect and safeguard the welfare of hospital staff, visitors and patients.

Mr Anderson interviewed key stakeholders, including staff, unions, local Members of Parliament and Police, in preparing his comprehensive report.

The report found that hospitals are facing increased risks, including dealing with angry or ice-affected patients and treating weaponinflicted injuries.

Ms Hornery has welcomed the

report and has called on the NSW Health Minister to implement the recommendations as quickly as possible.

“I have been calling for more security guards, better training and the authority to detain violent patients at the John Hunter and Mater hospitals,” said Ms Hornery.

“Health Ministers have conducted a number of reviews but no action has been taken to employ additional staff and improve training.

“I spent a number of hours speaking with Peter and I am pleased that he has taken on board the issues that I raised with him.

“Hospital staff, including security, have been kicked, punched, shot, and stabbed, with an incident at the Mater hospital in May 2019 that saw a guard stabbed with scissors.

“The recommendations call for a reduction in the use of contract security staff, the hiring of more permanent staff, and a boost to security numbers in some rural and regional hospitals.

“The Minister has the report, the third since 2012, and I am asking him to get on with implementing the recommendations as soon as possible,” said Ms Hornery.

The Hunter Region Landcare Network is inviting members of the community to nominate someone they know for the 2021 Regional Landcare Awards.

This is your opportunity to acknowledge the significant contribution friends, family or colleagues may have made to natural resource management, sustainable agricultural practice or environmental awareness within our greater region.

Letters to We received this letter in response to last month’s letter from local student Miriam Gray regarding asylum seekers.

I am pleased to see a young student having an opinion on refugees or any topic for that matter. With the information at hand via the internet, due research needs to still be done before making such comments.

Although a person at this age can be absolved for much of this inaccuracy.

There were 160,000 Australians that are homeless as at August 2020, that’s 1 in 150 in the so called “lucky country” The underlying problems with giving advice around our refugee intake is too many people have opinions without thinking correctly about solutions.

Firstly rather than moving 79 million people to other countries (mainly Western democratic nations for example), why not help solve the problem from within those countries in the first place.

Like teams from Oz that can help with cheap infrastructure / planting

crops / irrigation methods / rain water capture / food generation in general and remaining where your culture and family already are living. Even if you need to move across country due to violence.

Why would you do this, well because if you don’t you will soon have another 79 million individuals as you have solved the problem but haven’t addressed the underlying cause.

Change, be it, individual, society or globally can only come from within, not from without. The same as any long term viable solutions.

If you give someone a fish they eat for a day, if you teach them to fish they eat for a lifetime.

People making comments need to help provide solutions not just highlight what many already know.

By showing what level of sacrifice they would make for their cause (volunteering is an admirable start). Like going without new clothes for a year and sending that saved money overseas to fund programs to help from within that specific country. Maybe putting some of their part-time job money or birthday money towards a fund

that tackles world homelessness or reduction in world persecution / displacement. Putting your money where your mouth is - so to speak.

It is easy to make a comment about what should be done when others (tax payers) will bear the ongoing cost of that idea without any self sacrifice of their own (monetarily wise).

The reason why we have a good quality of life here is, we generally live within our means and pay tax of around 20-30% of what we earn.

Some 50% of all yearly Australian population growth comes from overseas immigration / asylum seekers. How about campaigning directly to the nations that have imparted injustice on its peoples and displaced individuals in the first place. Then fund programs or send over Austrlian citizens with the skills and knowledge to help with these problems overseas, rather than expecting Australia in the first instance to bear a greater burden of a problem we did not cause in the first place.

Donate old boots, support local kids State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, is calling on the community to donate their old footy boots, to support local families who cannot afford new boots.

The Development and Relief Agency (DARA), a registered charity of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, operates to support vulnerable people in our local community.

DARA are collecting any soccer boots that people have laying around that are in a decent condition and not getting used and will donate them to children of local families who are struggling financially.

Ms Hornery’s office at 67 Nelson Street, Wallsend, will be an official drop off point for any preloved boots.

“The Wallsend electorate has many proud football clubs and I am asking these clubs to join with me in supporting this great initiative.”

One stop shop for grant funding City of Newcastle is making it easier for the community to access more than 1,000 grant funding opportunities through a new online service, Newcastle Grant Finder.

Newcastle Grant Finder provides a comprehensive listing of funding opportunities available to local businesses, community groups, sporting clubs, not-for-profits and individuals.

Newcastle Grant Finder identifies funding opportunities in the area from State and Federal governments and agencies, not just those provided by the City of Newcastle, presenting a one-stop-search tool with selfservice functionality for users to track, bundle, save and create alerts.

Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz said Newcastle Grant Finder is a first-ofits-kind in Newcastle and will see more funding flow to worthy causes as part of City of Newcastle’s digital transformation to make its services more efficient and effective for the community.

New dog, old tricks

One fascinating aspect of human behaviour, and also of public policy development, is that some ideas are just ahead of their time. People just aren’t ready to hear, or act on, the ideas – yet!

Let me give you an example, to help make sense of what I am talking about.

Approximately a year before Covid, I was offered a job in Sydney. Due to some recent deaths in the family, I felt that I needed to be in Newcastle. So, I very confidently proposed to work half the time in Sydney and half the time in Newcastle. Flexible work arrangements, knowing I can deliver on the outcomes –

good idea right? The response I received was a puzzled “what?” accompanied by a look that made me feel that I had sneezed and needed to race off for a Covid test.

These days, when I tell the story, people look just as puzzled that someone could have refused my request.

Despite the rhetoric of “flexible workplaces”, working from home/different locations was just not accepted – yet.

How does this relate to public policy and government decision-making? Well, I just happen to have another story up my sleeve to share about this.

In 1993, the Liberal Party, led by John Hewson, went to the Federal election on a platform called Fightback!, which included introducing a Goods and Services Tax (GST). He lost. There are many detailed articles that analyse how he lost an “unlosable” election, but essentially his ideas were ahead of their time.

Since then, many of the elements of the Fightback package have become part of Australian public policy, including the GST, introduced by the Howard government in 1999.

So, if you have a good idea, the message is “don’t give up!” Some ideas are just ahead of their time. Keep the “old trick” in your filing cabinet, ready to pull out when the world has moved on and a “new dog” is ready for good ideas.

The 19th century saw the birth of a new mode of grocery retailing - the Cooperative Society movement. Begun in the UK and brought to Australia by immigrants, the core idea was for consumers to own, control and benefit from their local store.

Why everything you’ve heard about arthritis is wrong

(Ok. Maybe not everything, but here are five things that are) If you are reading this because you are in pain, or if you’re just worried about arthritis in the future, I hope these quick tips help!

1. Arthritis pain does not = damage. Arthritis is a part of our bodies wear and tear. It’s not a sign that your body is falling apart. In most cases it’s your

body trying to talk to you. Usually to say something like ‘Hey! Too much walking!’

2. Arthritis does not automatically mean pain.

Lots of folks have lots of arthritis and no pain. On the other hand, lots of folks have big pain but no arthritis.

Why? It’s complicated — but the short answer is: no two humans are the same and our bodies and brains work differently to others.

3. Why “No pain, no gain” doesn’t work. It sounds like something a physio would say. But it’s wrong, mainly because the more you push your body into pain, the more it resists. It’s like poking a bruise keep doing it and it just gets worse. So get your pain to reduce before doing exercise.

4. It’s because you played lots of sport. Nope.

It’s not. There is no evidence of playing sport or even *gasp* long distance running causing arthritis.

In fact, the body is very clever, it adapts to load from exercise by making your joints healthier and lubricates the joint.

5. Physio can’t help - you need a knee replacement.

What bunkum. We’ve got lots of research now that tells us that physio can help avoid knee replacements altogether, or at least avoid it for a while. Some people need the operation but in many cases they don’t.

Anal sac disease

Ugh! Not really a dinner table topic, but a common problem, and one that we have seen a lot of over recent months at NLVC. Anal glands are modified sweat glands which are located on either side of the anus of cats and dogs (and most other species as well). They are used to mark territory and skunks have the most famously smelly ones! However anal glands are not important for your pet’s health and can be removed if medically necessary. Some pets get recurrent abscesses and some have glands that either get constantly blocked or they constantly leak.

You will know if your pet’s glands are causing irritation if you see him “scooting” across the floor

– this puts pressure on the gland and may case it to release excess fluid. He also may be constantly licking at the area or reluctant to pass faeces. Anal gland abscesses are extremely painful. Some pets (usually dogs) on the other hand seem to leak fluid every time they sit down – these dogs have been born with an extra generously sized anal sac duct (the part that leads from the storage sac of the gland to the outside).

Treating anal sac abscesses involves cleaning and unclogging of the anal duct to prevent fluid buildup, and administration of anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medication to treat the infection. We are likely also to advise a high fibre diet (more fibre means bigger faeces which should help empty the gland naturally). A hypoallergenic diet can help, as can ensuring that your pet’s flea and tick prevention is up to date (glands become inflamed when the rest of the skin is inflamed). Finally, for this reason, we are likely to advise a hypoallergic shampoo (for example one containing aloe vera, oatmeal or perhaps tea tree oil).

If your pet has recurrent anal gland infections no matter what you do, or if she is a problem “leaker”, talk to us about surgery. There is a small risk of incontinence following anal gland surgery, so it is usually a last resort treatment, but it can be the perfect answer to a painful smelly problem!

Exercises for flexibility

Regular stretching can help keep your body mobile and flexible. Stretching helps avoid neck aches, back aches and injuries. Stretching exercises are best done when muscles have been warmed up with activities such as swimming, walking or cycling.

Try the following stretches. Stretch slowly and gently.

When first starting these stretches, hold each position for 3 seconds and repeat 5 more times, if possible. If you have done these exercises before, hold each stretch for 10–15 seconds and repeat 2–3 times. Stretching exercises

may feel slightly uncomfortable, but should not cause pain.

1. Standing neck and shoulder stretch 2. Sitting neck stretch 3. Mid back stretch 4. Gentle hip stretch 5. Hamstring stretch 6. Back stretch flexing (‘cat stretch’) 7. Lower back release 8. Lying leg crossover stretch Points to remember when exercising • Check with a doctor before starting an exercise program.

• A physiotherapist or trained fitness professional can test your flexibility and advise on exercise programs for specific needs.

• Warm up your muscles before stretching (e.g. five minutes of walking).

• Take regular breaks every 30 minutes if you have a desk job – do some of the recommended neck and shoulder stretches.

• If you spend long periods of time leaning forward, stretch your back regularly.

Tricky friendships

Here is a hot check-in strategy that gently yet powerfully sets up end-of-day conversations with our youngsters. It leaves them in the driver’s seat as they build their relationship skills, with us positioned as a safe harbour they can shelter in to reflect on their big days of friend-making/keeping.

Plant the idea with them that each friendship is like a garden that they and the other person tend together.

Talking that way builds the concept that safe and healthy relationships come from two people giving and receiving a series of small actions over time.

Each day, once they have had a chance to collect themselves (maybe while perched up having something to eat) make it a ritual to ask: “Who did you water today, and who did you feel watered by today?”

Their response might sound like: “I made sure Sarah got included when we played handball” and “Ollie saved me a seat at assembly”.

Notice out loud what you notice about their body language. That is your chance to extend the conversation into how it felt to be them in that moment…and for them to imagine how it felt for the other person.

From there you are set up to explore what they value from the friendship moments they felt good in, and how they can speak up about the bits they didn’t like the feeling of.

The more our next generation are supported to grow these important skills the less Family Violence we will see in our communities. How exciting that actions as small as these can play such a key role in where we are headed.

Has someone appointed you as their Enduring Power of Attorney?

to have lost their mental capacity. Being appointed as an attorney is a position of trust. You cannot be an attorney if you are under 18 years of age or if you are bankrupt or insolvent.

As an attorney, you must keep your own money and property separate from the money and property of the principal, unless you are joint owners, or operate joint bank accounts. You should also keep reasonable accounts and records about dealing with the principal’s money and property.

If it becomes necessary for you to sign certain documents dealing with real estate, the Power of Attorney document must first be registered at NSW Land Registry Services.

You must always act in the best interests of the principal and within any limits or conditions placed on your authority. If you do not follow direction, or do not act in the best interests of the principal, the principal may revoke the power of attorney and you must stop acting immediately once you become aware that the power of attorney has been revoked.

A Power of Attorney document cannot be used for health or lifestyle decisions, that is the job of an enduring guardian.

Measuring moods

Our moods are interesting. Less specific than our emotions, our moods often determine what kind of day we have. That is because moods have valency; they feel positive or negative, good or bad. A good mood can feel up-beat, energetic, positive about life, maybe even happy and cheerful. A bad mood can feel dark or angry or down, but also a sense of heaviness or struggle. Moods are certainly emotional. We can recognise them in ourselves but also in others too. And moods can change, sometimes from day to day.

However, moods also have a physical experience because the body interacts with emotional states. For everyday moods, this interaction manifests itself predominantly

between two factors, each one on a continuum: one, ‘calm’ through to ‘tense’, and the other, ‘energy’ through to ‘fatigue’. One psychologist described this interaction using a circumplex model.

Imagine a circle divided in half, the diameter drawn east west. The top half we call energy, the bottom we call tiredness. Now we divide the circle again, the diameter drawn north south. The left we call calm, the right we call tense. We now have four quadrants: calm energy, tense energy and calm tiredness, tense tiredness, as shown in the circle depicted.

Each quadrant has its own set of emotions, but overall, the top left quadrant ‘calm energy’ is the one we would all like to be experiencing most of the time. Calm energy is a mood state with plenty of energy, which feels positive and up-beat, but also calm and relaxed. It makes sense to try to organise our lives so that we live mostly in the ‘calm energy’ mood. Getting good sleep, exercise and nutrition helps our energy levels, and relaxation, meditation and breathing techniques foster calmness.
