Advertising bookings for January issue close on Tuesday 15 December The Local is lovingly produced then carefully hand delivered each and every month to more than 11,000 residential letterboxes and businesses in Lambton, North Lambton, New Lambton, New Lambton Heights, Broadmeadow, Hamilton North, Jesmond and Kotara. You can find back issues of The Local and check out the latest community news and information at: www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au or on our Facebook page @thelocalnewcastle. If you enjoy receiving The Local in your letterbox each month please support the businesses you see advertising on these pages. Without their support your local paper could not and would not happen. Pretty simple really...

Thanks again
I’ve said it before but it bears repeating, and repeating often. If it wasn’t for the support of local businesses, The Local would not exist. Without them placing advertising on these pages we could not pay for production, printing and delivery of The Local each month. I thank our advertisers directly whenever I get the chance but I would also like to thank them publicly here. If they didn’t see a return on that investment they would, sooner or later, cease advertising. The return on that investment is you dear reader. Well, what I mean is, your custom is that return. By using their pharmacy for prescriptions, by engaging their professional services to sell a home or make a Will, or by buying Christmas gifts from them locally you are repaying their support of The Local. But of course buying locally is bigger than just supporting your favourite little community newspaper, important as that is. By spending locally you are supporting local peoples’ businesses and local peoples’ jobs. Whether it’s in Elder Street, Alma Road or Beaumont Street, each of the commercial precincts in the suburbs we serve needs that support to remain alive and vibrant. This Christmas, more than ever, please be conscious of spending locally wherever and whenever you can. Hard-working local businesses will appreciate your efforts like never before. Thanks again to our readers, writers, contributors, advertisers and letterbox deliverers for another great year. We look forward to working with you all to bring The Local to our community again in 2021. You can expect the January issue in your letterbox in late December or early in the new year. Wishing a happy and safe Christmas to all. www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au
A Local reader near and far At The Local we randomly select a winner of our popular quiz each month. But when Aaron of New Lambton sent us his entry recently we knew he had to be our winner for last month. Along with his quiz answers Aaron wrote to tell us he was an avid reader of The Local. So much so that his family sent him a copy in a care package while he was on deployment with the Australian Army in the Middle East during 2018. “My family sent me a copy of The Local whilst I was deployed in 2018 and it was great to see what was going on. While he had long had a desire to join the services he found work in the Hunter Valley mining industry. Eventually the dream of joining the Army took hold and he enlisted in the Army. Footpath upgrade at Callaghan College City of Newcastle has completed a 400-metre section of new footpath in front of Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus, and is on track to deliver over two kilometres of new footpath by the end of the financial year. The $800,000 Jesmond project has replaced previously unpaved sections of nature reserve, making the trip to and from school safer and easier for Callaghan Jesmond’s 700 students. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the footpath upgrade improves the accessibility and liveability of the city. “City of Newcastle maintains nearly 1,000 kilometres of footpath across the local government area. “This Janet Street upgrade is a significant project which is going to be great for those at Callaghan College and importantly, many residents in this busy part of Jesmond.” Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen inspected the works with Callaghan College Principal Roger Macey outside campus today and said these types of works are very beneficial for pedestrians and other road users. “Our focus is on improving public safety through improved infrastructure such as more pedestrian

refuges and crossings particularly in high traffic areas such as school zones,” Cr Clausen said. Principal of Callaghan College Roger Macey said the improvements along Janet Street will make it safer for the broader school community. “The footpath and pedestrian crossing right in front of the school will no doubt make a difference to everyone who comes to Callaghan College, not just our students and teachers.”

deployed to Kuwait as an Intelligence Analyst. His work with the Army took him to many places including in 2017 a flight in Marine One, the US President’s helicopter, Donald Trump’s at that time. Returning to Australia after his Middle East deployment Aaron worked for an Australian government agency in Canberra and considered his future. He opted for coming home to New Lambton where he married his long-time sweetheart Laura last year and purchased a home in New Lambton. Aaron has decided to return as a civilian contractor for a Australian company and will leave for Afghanistan before the end of the year. He will be on a 14 week rotation consisting of 8 weeks in Afghanistan, two weeks Covid-19 quarantine in Sydney, then four weeks at home in New Lambton. We wish Aaron every success and a safe return trip home each three months.

Piggott’s Pharmacy 50 years This year marks 50 years since two young pharmacists, Chris and Shirley Piggott, purchased the Kotara Pharmacy on Orchardtown Rd at Blackbutt. With both daughters and one son following in their footsteps to become pharmacists, and their other son marrying a pharmacist, there could be little doubt the Piggott name would become synonymous with local, friendly and caring pharmacy throughout Newcastle and the Hunter. New drink and drug driving law A new law combining drink and drug driving and changes to the mobile speed camera program are part of a major crackdown on offences to save lives on our roads. Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said harsher penalties would be thrown at those caught drink and drug driving from next year. “Research shows you are 23 times more likely to crash if you are under the influence of both alcohol and drugs – this massive, life-threatening risk needs a stronger penalty,” Mr Constance said. “Across our roads network we have seen this reckless and irresponsible behaviour result in far too many deaths and serious injuries, and these tougher penalties send the message that this behaviour won’t be tolerated.” Since 2015, 101 serious crashes have involved a driver or rider with illegal levels of both alcohol and drugs in their systems. These crashes killed 98 people and seriously injured another 52. Mr Constance said changes to the mobile speed camera program, including the removal of warning signs, would roll out over the next 12 months and bring
NSW in line with other jurisdictions. “This is about changing culture and changing behaviour. We’ve seen it happen with our world leading mobile phone detection program, where the rate of people offending has steadily declined. No warnings signs mean you can be caught anywhere, anytime and we want that same culture around mobile speed cameras,” Mr Constance said. Independent modelling from Monash University Accident Research Centre showed these enhancements to the mobile speed camera program may save between

34 and 43 lives, and prevent around 600 serious injuries in NSW each year. Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said that country people make up a third of the NSW population, but last year deaths on country roads made up two-thirds of our road toll, with speeding being the biggest killer. “To see so many lives lost on country roads, where the impacts are felt across entire communities, is devastating,” Mr Toole said. “Last year, 136 people in NSW lost their lives and 2,941 were injured because someone was speeding, so the message is clear: remember that every time you get behind the wheel, the choices we make can have fatal consequences.” Mr Toole said the new measures would not only target the small proportion of motorists who do the wrong thing, but also re-invest fines in life-saving infrastructure on our country roads to ensure every journey is a safer one. “The NSW Government is working hard to make NSW roads the safest in the world, but we need everyone to remember that it is their responsibility to drive so others survive.”

The Man in the Water by David Burton
“On the first day of year 10, Shaun sees a dead body.” The Man in the Water is a book about mystery, crime, relationships and friendships. It’s set in a rural Australian town that is reliant on the miners for income. There are not too many people around who care about the grown man’s unexplained death, so Shaun and his best friend Will take it into their own hands. Follow Shaun and Will’s story through their discoveries and dead ends around how they come to find the smalltown killer. Or is there even one? All suspects and innocent men are twisted into one huge question, with a detailed plot second guessing every idea you have. No assumptions can be made whilst reading this book! To add to the mix, we have the honouring of love and breaking of trust from the main characters and others, which just makes the storyline even more captivating. I could not put this book down, it’s such a perfect balance of anything you will ever need in a book. It was a clear but engrossing book, with unexpected findings and startling decisions made by the characters. Risks of life over the deciphering of one’s death, David Burton keeps you on your toes with this thrilling novel. Recommended for ages 13-16.

Adamstown Post Office
Often in this column, the pairing of “then” and “now” photographs highlights what has disappeared or changed over the years. This month, one of the most striking things is the similarity. Ralph Snowball’s photograph shows guests assembled for the official opening of Adamstown’s new Post Office by the Postmaster-General Mr J Cook on 21 December 1895. Apart from a missing awning, 125 years later the exterior of the building is remarkably unchanged. One difference can be seen in the roads. In 1895 Kyle Rd was a primitive dirt track, and the front of the post office was level with the street. In 1900 Brunker Rd was lowered when the Adamstown tramway was built, and the building gained steps and a ramp.
This was Adamstown’s third post office. The first opened in April 1877 and was operated by John and Anne Syme from their residence in Victoria St. In May 1889 William Lee took charge of postal affairs in Adamstown, and a decision was made to relocate to a more central location in Union St (Brunker Rd). Commenting on the impending move, the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate noted that “the postal authorities have decided wisely … the present office is inconvenient and most unsuitable.” The second post office opened at the end of 1889, but its usefulness was short lived. Within a year Adamstown Council was complaining that it was only “a fourroomed dwelling-house” and was “far short of the requirements of the place at the present time.” In 1894 the government approved the budget for a new dedicated post office, and the following year accepted the construction tender of Southon brothers for £1200. The building had a large office and lobby and seven other rooms to accommodate post and telegraph work. Constructed from Waratah stone the building has endured. It serves the same purpose today as when it opened, for while the world has changed much, our human desire for connection and communication remains undiminished. PARENTING
Matters with Mel Burgess of Love Parenting
What a year to have parented through Crikey! If you are a parent looking to leave behind all you can in 2020 then here is a simple family activity for you: - Choose a moment in time between now and the end of the year. After school on the last day of term works well. Or as you set off on a family holiday. There’s always New Years Eve. You know your family – you’ll feel what is a good fit. - Pick up a small bag of smooth pebbles and some textas.
- Pile everyone in the car and drive somewhere you can throw them. Like really throw them….harnessing all that pent-up ‘blurgh’ you pushed down each time you soldiered-on this year. - Have everyone take a handful of pebbles and write one word on each pebble that represents a stressful event or issue they encountered through the year. - Take turns hurling one out into the ocean, lake, quarry etc stating which personal qualities/skillsets helped and whose support was really valued. - Notice at a bodily level which of the pebbles felt the best to cast off. - Soak in the magnitude of how much as a team you got through, and which key mild superpowers you are taking with you into 2021. I’m Mel and I Parent Coach from the reclaimed manshed in the bottom of my Lambton garden over on Fitzroy Road. This is the first of my columns for The Local and I’d love to hear if you would like more suggested activities like this one. Shoot me a message or take a seat if you see me available when I’m over at Corner Lane Espresso in New Lambton – I am there for you to drop-in chat with 6:30-7:30am on Monday mornings.

Noise phobias in dogs and cats
whining, barking, pacing, circling, panting, yawning, lip licking, hiding under furniture, or clawing at doors. Some pets even dig through sofas or walls to escape. There are many factors which contribute to this fear. Negative experiences around a specific noise can cause anxiety when it is heard again. The fear response may also be due to lack of early socialization (3-14 weeks old for dogs, 2-7 weeks old for cats); without this, exposure to new sounds may cause strong reactions. Underlying illness can also be a contributing factor; a pet who is sick or painful may feel vulnerable to scary noises. As in humans, when animals age, their brain chemistry and general health changes, and anxieties may worsen. Treatment options for anxiety are varied and often, combinations of methods are needed. Treatment plans should be customised for each individual animal, and they may include medications as well as behavioural modifications. There are also over-the-counter products available that have varying success in the treatment of fear and anxiety. For example anti-anxiety wraps, calming supplements, species-specific pheromones, massage techniques, acupuncture, white/brown noise, or calming music can all contribute to a calmer happier pet. If your pet is anxious please come down and talk to us
In the lead up to the party and fireworks season it’s worth mentioning noise phobias in both dogs and cats! Dogs and cats can develop a fear response to any noise: fireworks, thunder, cars backfiring, lawnmowers, hair dryers, smoke detectors, garbage trucks, etc. They may only show mild signs, but these signs are at risk of becoming more severe as time passes - trembling, whale eyes in dogs (that is, showing the whites of their eyes), about it before the behaviours escalate!

with Cheryl Shaw of Dogoverboard
Dogs don’t wear thongs
It’s great to be able to go for a walk with your dog and for you both to get some exercise, fresh air and sniff out what is happening in the neighbourhood. During Covid-19, many people are working from home and have also welcomed a new dog into their family. Now working from home has changed and altered most of our routines.

I am concerned how many owners are out walking their dogs at the hottest time in the middle of the day. The daytime temperatures have started to increase and combined with high humidity can cause dehydration and heatstroke in our loved pets, so we should be vigilant. As the pavement, tar and other surfaces get hot, we need to realise that our dog’s feet are susceptible to experiencing pain and even burning. Dogs have sensitive paws and their feet can easily be severely burnt and blistered. The dog’s pads help to regulate the body temperature and cool themselves. A dog cools its body temperature through the middle sections of the paws and via their tongue. Check the surface temperature by doing the 5 seconds test where you place your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds if it’s too hot for you to keep your hand on then it’s too hot for your dog to walk on. Be careful taking your dog to the beach in the middle of the day, burning hot sand at the beach is a serious problem for our dogs, remember they don’t wear thongs. Remember that ute trays and boat decks also present a potential burning hazards for your dogs pads. The best time to go for walks is in the cool of the morning and late evening when the temperature and the surfaces are cooler.

MIND
Matters by Dr Stuart Edser
Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health
We made it
It’s December and we’ve made it through one of the most difficult years we have experienced collectively for a very long time. The last time the world faced a global pandemic was the Spanish Flu of 19181920, over a hundred years ago. We have struggled through panic buying – remember the great toilet paper crisis - new public health protocols, the focus on personal hygiene standards – I don’t think I’ve washed my hands as much over my whole lifetime – dreaded lockdowns, working from home, layoffs, unemployment, hotspot scares, and of course, the
dreadful death toll. Unless you’re over 100 years old, this is all new to all of us. It has been quite the learning curve. Part of this year has also seen the advent of people struggling with mental health. People who have never faced mental health issues before have this year had to face loneliness, boredom, fear, sometimes depression, and certainly anxiety and stress. Like other mental health providers, my Practice has seen a sharp rise in contact. But December brings us to the end of the year. Most of us celebrate Christmas or the summer holidays. For Australia, that means swimming. Whether we’re on the coast, like here in our beautiful beach-side city of Newcastle, or further west, we get back in the water. It revives us and refreshes. We feel it as cleansing and reinvigorating. Even rejuvenating. It’s looking increasingly like we’re going to have a vaccine or two sooner rather than later. It’s wonderful news. This is a time now for us to leave 2020 behind, to rest up, to celebrate family and friends, to let the summer waters wash us fresh as we move into a new year with hope, health and enthusiasm. I am certainly looking forward to that. Happy Christmas everyone from Newcastle Psychology & Health.

PHARMACY
Matters by Anthony Piggott
of Piggott’s Pharmacies: Blackbutt, Branxton, Hamilton, Huntlee, Lambton and Merewether
Childhood immunisation
Immunisation strengthens the body’s immune system. The immune system fights infection in the body. Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect children (and adults) from some life-threatening infections. Vaccines are injections or oral doses of live but weakened viruses, dead bacteria or viruses, parts of bacteria or weakened bacterial toxins. Immunisation with a vaccine (vaccination) strengthens the body’s immune system against a bacteria or virus, before the body comes into contact with that bacteria or virus.

Some infections that immunisation can prevent
• Chicken pox (varicella) – a viral infection that causes an itchy, blistering skin rash. It can also cause serious problems. It may re-appear later in life as shingles. • Diphtheria – a bacterial infection that makes it hard to breathe. It can also cause heart and nerve damage and can lead to death. • Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) – a bacterial infection that can affect the brain, throat, lungs, joints or skin, and can lead to death. It occurs mostly in children under 2 years. • Hepatitis B – a viral infection that affects the liver and can lead to liver failure or cancer. • Human papillomavirus (HPV) – a sexually transmitted viral infection that can lead to cervical cancer and genital warts. • Measles – a viral infection that causes fever, rash, runny nose, cough and conjunctivitis (eye infection). It can lead to ear, lung and brain infections and death. • Meningococcal disease type C – a bacterial infection that can affect the blood or brain and can lead to death. It can develop very quickly. • Mumps – a viral infection that causes swollen salivary glands (glands that produce saliva). It can also cause serious problems. • Pertussis (whooping cough) – a bacterial infection that can cause a severe cough, lung infection, brain damage and death. • Pneumococcal disease – a bacterial infection that can affect the brain, blood or lungs, and can lead to death. • Poliomyelitis (polio) – a viral infection that can cause brain infection and paralysis, and can lead to death. • Rotavirus – a viral infection that can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting in babies and young children, and can lead to death. • Rubella (German measles) – a viral infection that causes swollen glands, joint pain and a rash. If a woman gets rubella during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the rubella can damage the baby. • Tetanus (lockjaw) – a bacterial infection that affects the nervous system. It causes severe muscle spasms and breathing problems, and can lead to death.
Who needs immunisation?
Australian health authorities recommend immunisation for all children. In Australia, the National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides immunisation to most children free of charge. The first vaccinations on the NIP Schedule are recommended at 6–8 weeks of age, and are continued throughout childhood. Most vaccinations need to be given more than once to protect against illness.
