Baby Wants Candy, an improv musical theater comedy group, were guests of the Centennial Speakers Series in January. Members of the group hosted improv workshops for the cast and crew of The Janus Players and performed twice for our community. This was The Janus Playersʼ second time interacting with Baby Wants Candy, as they saw several of the groupʼs performances (and then spent time with them after) at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland last summer.

A Message from the

HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Raiders: At our traditional Convocation ceremony to open the 2024-2025 school year this past September, we contended with an unusual acoustic challenge. Punctuating the usually serene sounds of the Mall were the noises of the active construction project of our dormitory — particularly the prominent percussion of structural framing taking the new building three stories vertical from its recently poured foundation. Rather than pause the project and risk delaying an aggressive construction timeline, we simply turned up the speakers, spoke a little more loudly into the microphone, and proceeded.

As an English teacher, I’m drawn to metaphors, especially when they are so readily — indeed so audibly — apparent, and, as such, I announced then that our theme for the year would be “Building Together.”

Certainly, this is a direct nod to the incredible new residence hall that now stands impressively over the Mall. With six wings, sixty student rooms, twelve faculty homes, eight student lounges, six kitchenettes, incredible outdoor gathering spaces, and modern amenities and HVAC, the new dorm hall will transform residential life and campus life at Hun. We can’t wait to welcome its first residents later this summer.

But that’s not all we are building. In this issue of Hun Today, you will read about powerful initiatives across the institution as we build an ever more impactful future for our School and our students. MISSION

ACCEPTED FAC U LT Y FO C U S E S O N S T U D E N T- C E N T E R E D L E A R N I N G A N D A M E N TO R S H I P M I N D S E T How do Hun faculty ensure they are meeting the promise of the School’s mission and making the classroom experience not just good, but great? It starts with professional development — not just for a few, but for all.

At the start of the 2024-2025 academic year, Daniel Walker, who has served Hun as dean of faculty since 2017 with an emphasis on Upper School hiring and faculty development, took on the combined role of supporting faculty in both the Middle and Upper Schools.

His goal is very specific: ensuring that both divisions are continuously growing and refining the skills necessary to provide mission-aligned teaching. Together with Upper School Head Ryan Hews and Middle School Head Ken Weinstein, the three are designing a School-wide professional development program that supports the teaching and learning objectives outlined in the School’s strategic plan. Mr. Walker notes that the faculty’s professional development this year is focused on three main pillars: student-centered learning, educating in a way that’s inclusive to all genders, and the necessity of creating optimal conditions for student mentorship and performance.

Prioritizing Connection The Hun School’s Approach to Student Health and Wellness “Some, like china teacups, are fragile: they break easily and cannot heal themselves, so you must handle them gently and keep them away from toddlers. Other things are resilient: they can withstand shocks. Parents usually give their toddlers plastic cups precisely because plastic can survive repeated falls to the floor, although the cups do not benefit from such falls. But Taleb asks us to look beyond the overused word “resilience” and recognize that some things are antifragile.

Many of the important systems in our economic and political life are like our immune systems: they require stressors and challenges in order to learn, adapt, and grow. Systems that are antifragile become rigid, weak, and inefficient when nothing challenges them or pushes them to respond vigorously. He notes that muscles, bones, and children are antifragile.”

Eva Ostrowsky, director of counseling and wellness at The Hun School, explains that the concept of antifragility is just one of the aspects of the School’s three-pronged approach to student wellness at Hun. When discussing student health and wellness, Mrs. Ostrowsky compares students to an unlikely subject: trees.

When a tree is met with harsh winds, the wind triggers a process called thigmomorphogenesis. Thigmomorphogenesis allows the tree the ability to sense mechanical stress from the wind and in turn, adjust its cell structure to withstand the strong force of the wind. This process also affects growth patterns in trees, including their leaf size and shape and root development. To the untrained eye, wind may appear to damage trees, but in fact, trees need wind to survive — trees are antifragile.

“We take this approach with our students,” Mrs. Ostrowsky says. “They need to experience hard things, and we cannot and should not shield them from the wind. When we shield students from hard things, we tend to see increased fragility, which often looks like a decrease in distress tolerance. We are not going to shield [students] from a gust of wind; instead we are going to safely put them in front of the wind, because we know they can handle it and it will make them stronger.”

Along with the concept of antifragility, Mrs. Ostrowsky notes that the two other, equally important, aspects of the School’s commitment to student wellness are rooted in community and belonging: “I matter; I can do hard things; I rely on you, you rely on me,” Mrs. Ostrowsky said. “The goal is that all of our students here can relate to those ‘I statements.’ Kids have to know that when they come to school here, that they are coming to a place where they are a part of something bigger than themselves — a place where they are having experiences that are helping them grow as individuals.”

Mrs. Ostrowsky explains that one of the many ways to foster growth and development in teenagers is to introduce them to risky behaviors while teaching them the safest way to engage with said activity. “Driving a car can be really dangerous, right? But before you start driving, you learn the rules of the road. You learn to always put your seatbelt on; you take a class and have to pass a written test; you practice with a licensed driver; you have to pass a road test. MAUREEN SCANNAPIECO LEMING ’95 Steps Into New Leadership Role

When Maureen Scannapieco Leming ’95 arrived here at The Hun School in 1989 as a new student in the seventh grade, she immediately felt at home. With each new year at Hun, Ms. Leming took on exciting challenges. A strong student, she was as talented in the classroom as she was competitive on the field hockey team. Known for her infectious energy and positive attitude, she was selected by her peers as the student with the “Most School Spirit” in The Edgerstounian, captained the field hockey team, and even served as the School’s mascot for a beat. She was passionate about the School and its community, but if you asked her in 1995 where she’d spend a majority of her career, she would have immediately said in the fashion industry. “From a very young age, I thought I would follow in my mother’s footsteps and work in fashion,” she shares. “I did, but after a few years, I realized that the industry culture was not for me.”

It was a Hun connection — close friend Megan Kreger Poller ’95, now chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department — who suggested she consider an opening at the School. Ms. Leming returned to Hun and has never looked back, serving as an administrator for twenty-two years. In that time, she has held roles in advancement and marketing and communications, served as a dorm parent, founded the School’s Centennial Speaker Series in 2014, helped reimagine the School’s mission in 2016, and served as co-chair of the School’s Fiftieth Anniversary of Girls and Women in 2021. Since 2010, she has led the School’s marketing and communications efforts and served on the Administrative Team. In 2021, she was appointed chief

She celebrated her ninetieth birthday just prior on October 8th, donning a baby pink tiara in a room decorated to the nines, surrounded by family and an abundance of love. She was on the Alzheimer’s fast-track, diagnosed with an aggressive version in May 2021. She was laid to rest in her beloved Adirondack Mountains in Keene Valley, New York, in August 2024.

Like his family, Brian stayed connected to Hun, attending countless Hun alum gatherings on the East and West Coasts. He was quick to offer to mentor others, especially young people interested in entertainment, and had a unique gift for being fully present and making others feel like they were the most important person in the world. His final act of thoughtfulness was to help others through the organ donation program.

At Hun, Brian was a Peer Leader, SADD member, Janus Player, swimmer, water polo team member, and rower. He served as a member of the Princeton-area TAG (Teen Advisory Group).

He was also a Legacy Award Recipient, which recognized the deep connections his extended family has to Hun. Twentyone members of his family have attended and/or served Hun in some capacity. His late grandfather, John E. Stoddard, was named a trustee emeritus after serving as a Hun trustee
