Feeding our People — 2019 Impact Report

For more than 40 years, Hunger Network has been there for those who need us in Cuyahoga County and beyond. 2019 was an incredible year — we helped provide 3.2 million meals for children, families and seniors in need. With your support, we are proud to share that the communities we serve are not facing food insecurity alone.

Hunger Network has transformed from a response-based organization to one with a strategic approach. Complex needs require innovative and scalable solutions. Hunger Network Food Rescue, a program launched to bridge the gap between food waste and hunger, surpassed 300,000 pounds of food rescued in 2019. Through this program, we provide our neighbors with fresh, healthy food while alleviating three of their most substantial barriers to food access: transportation, cost and time. Hunger Network Food Rescue furnishes free nutritious food to people where they work, live and play—in their own neighborhoods.

We worked diligently to build a healthier community through our Stay Well program, which aims to ensure that those facing food insecurity have access to a variety of health screenings and nutrition education. Our network of Hunger Centers and nonprofit partners is stronger and more collaborative than it’s ever been.

As pleased as we are of our accomplishments to date, hunger remains a daily reality for 1 in 6 Clevelanders. The 2019 Cuyahoga County Community Health Needs Assessment report cites that 58 percent of all Cleveland residents and 34.6 percent of Cuyahoga County residents live in food deserts — numbers that are continuing to grow due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, our help is needed now more than ever. There is still much work to be done to guarantee everyone has access to fresh, healthy, nourishing meals.

Building a hunger-free Cleveland In 2019, the poverty rate for Clevelanders was 30.8 percent — the highest poverty rate among all large cities in the United States. The 2019 Cuyahoga County Community Health Needs Assessment cited that 58.1 percent of all Cleveland residents and 34.6 percent of Cuyahoga County residents live in food deserts — defined as areas more than half a mile away from a supermarket or grocery store. The question for many families in our community was not what they would have for dinner, but whether they could have anything for dinner.

Hunger Network is dedicated to feeding our communities’ future. Today, we are not just sourcing more food for our neighbors in need — we are sourcing more nourishing, nutrientdense food. In 2019, we shared hope to 142,394 families and 435,728 individuals at our 71 Hunger Centers. We shared innovation through our newest program, Hunger Network Food Rescue. We shared compassion through food pantries and hot meals.

Hope for the holidays

Solidifying our commitment to address local food insecurity and build a healthier community, 94 cents of every dollar donated was used to purchase food for our 71 Hunger Centers in Cuyahoga County. Your support of our network helped to provide 3.7 million meals for families and individuals in our community.

In addition, Hunger Network resources supplied financial and logistical support for our 71 Hunger Centers. Paired with specialized volunteer and staff services, these resources allowed each Hunger Center to provide enhanced services to their surrounding communities.

In October of 2019, we celebrated the Grand Opening of our Hunger Center at Mt. Zion of Oakwood Village.

As October approaches each year, our dedicated staff, volunteers, and community partners begin gearing up for the holiday season. The 2019 Holiday Campaign raised $218,608 —an astounding 874,432 meals.

With the dedication of our network, we worked hard to maximize our impact and feed more people in Cuyahoga County.

Hunger Network had a groundbreaking 2019 which wouldn’t have been possible without our passionate staff, board, volunteers, donors, and every last community partner walking handin-hand with us in the fight to end hunger. Our mission wouldn’t be possible without you!

In 2019, our fundraisers and special events raised $271,000 — That’s 1,084,000 meals! Our generous community partners held events to support our mission which raised $34,000 — That’s 136,000 meals!

Hunger Network’s Special Events raised $271,000 in 2019 — an equivalent of nearly 1.1 million meals!

Kicking off the year, the 31st Annual Run/Walk for Hunger presented by Mary Cares Much brought together 368 participants and raised nearly $90,000 to feed families in need.

In 2019, Hunger Network’s community partners held events to support our mission which raised $34,000 — an equivalent of 136,000 meals! Thanks to Sunnyside Toyota, WJCU 88.7, Dave Weiner, Greater Cleveland Aquarium, Crafted Fest, Hermes, Asurint, Lucky’s, Lago Brunch, Nestle, Whole Foods and Crocker Park for fighting local hunger.

72 golfers came together at StoneWater Golf Club to drive away hunger at Hunger Network’s 3rd Annual Golf Outing! Raising nearly $30,000, the outing certainly was a “hole in one.”

On behalf of Hunger Network’s staff, Board of Trustees and the thousands of people that were fed thanks to community support of our fundraisers and events — thank you!

For the first time ever, Hunger Network partnered with Cleveland’s own West Side Market for a memorable, after-hours foodie event. Market After Dark raised over $50,000 to fuel Hunger Network Food Rescue’s fight against food waste!

To wrap up 2019 and raise funds to fight holiday hunger, our community came together for the 30th Annual Best Party of the Year! One of Hunger Network’s longest-running events, the gala started as Orlando Baking Company’s holiday celebration where team members collected non-perishable goods to combat local hunger.

30 years later, the Best Party of the Year has grown into one of Hunger Network’s biggest fundraisers.

Partners like Orlando Baking Company have proven year after year that we can feed more families when we work together. The 30th Annual Best Party of the Year raised over $100,000 to provide much-needed nourishment for our neighbors in need!

Enabling healthier communities Everyday, our Hunger Centers and partner nonprofits across Cuyahoga County and beyond distribute healthy, nourishing food to individuals and families who need it — but our work does not stop there. We believe it is crucial to connect and collaborate with partners outside of our own network to find solutions to systematic issues surrounding hunger and food waste. In fact, one of Hunger Network’s core values is collaboration. We develop effective partnerships and relationships that increase the impact of our network so no one goes hungry and no food goes to waste.

Hunger Network’s team had the honor of joining the Food Waste Workshop at the 2019 Ohio Hunger Dialogues held at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio. Sharing the people-powered technology that fuels Hunger Network Food Rescue and learning from organizations and students with like-minded missions, the dialogue offered new perspective and opportunities to continue addressing food insecurity in Northeast Ohio.

Bridging the last mile: the new frontier in food access Launched in November 2018, Hunger Network Food Rescue is focused on revolutionizing the last mile of the logistics chain. To redirect surplus food to those who need it most, we partnered with 65 nonprofits in Greater Cleveland. Many of our partner nonprofits are beyond traditional food-access networks—daycare centers, senior centers, after-school programs, housing authorities— services that are already accessed everyday so we can overcome transportation limitations and bring food access closer to those who need it.

Enabling access to healthy food Fresh food only makes up 10-15 percent of national food donations to people in need. 52 percent of food that goes to waste is produce, which is difficult to access for those in poverty. Hunger Network Food Rescue is closing the healthy meal gap. 87 percent of what Hunger Network Food Rescue recovered and distributed in 2019 was fresh food.

Technology for good Powered by Food Rescue Hero, Hunger Network Food Rescue’s model rests on two key factors: a fully invested community and the utilization of technology to innovate. In 2019, over 1,004 individuals downloaded the Hunger Network Food Rescue app. Our network grows everyday. Driving all over Greater Cleveland, volunteers visit and get to know communities, creating relationships that may not have happened otherwise.

Bridging the last mile: the new frontier in food access Thanks to the generosity of Bank of America Foundation, we piloted a new food recovery program in fall of 2019: Glean Team.

Food waste affects us all. When food is lost or wasted, all of the resources that have been used to produce it are also wasted, as are the nutrients it contains. While most research focuses on post-harvest food waste in consumer-facing businesses, on-farm food loss accounts for 16 percent of all wasted food in our country. One-third of edible product — or 33.7 percent — remains unharvested in the fields of farms across the United States. While 1 in 6 of our Cleveland neighbors face hunger, food waste from any industry cannot be ignored — particularly food that is locally-grown and in turn, more nutrient-dense.

Hunger Network Food Rescue’s Glean Team program partners with socially responsible area companies and businesses to glean fruits and vegetables from local, urban farms and provide fresh food options to our local, nonprofit partners.

Area companies and business join us to harness the strength of their team while also creating meaningful change locally.

Participants harvest produce that would otherwise go to waste and then redistribute it to our partner nonprofits who serve those that struggle with food insecurity.

Making a lasting impact 58 years ago, Dr. and Mrs. Saha moved to the United States with only $50 in their pocket. While the two built their lives together, they found ways to give back locally. Dr. Saha spent years volunteering at Bishop William M. Cosgrove Center — a hot meal site within our network.

Bringing their family together to give back, Dr. and Mrs. Saha also participated in the Walk for Hunger for many years.

After building their lives together, pinching pennies, and volunteering at Hunger Network for 15 years, Dr. and Mrs. Saha made the decision to leave a Legacy Gift. Their planned gift will fuel Hunger Network’s mission in perpetuity.

HONORING DANA’S LEGACY: In 2019, we launched Dana’s Legacy Society — a group dedicated to our founder Dana Irribarren and her passion to feed all in need.

Dana’s Legacy Donors are individuals and families who leave a lasting gift from their estate to enable the continuation of Hunger Network’s mission.
