Letter from the Editor

I would like to start this month by offering our condolences to Cody Custer and the entire family of James H. Custer. I can’t think of any greater tribute than to see a man who is loved and respected by his family and that was certainly the case of Jim Custer, who passed away July 30. The loss of a loved one is never easy but we are thankful to know that he is in a much better place. You can read a tribute to Jim Custer on page 8.

It is really exciting to see such a talented crop of young guns working their way up through the various levels of rodeo and bull riding. Barbara Pinnella had a chance to talk to one of them this month for Humps N Horns. Tye Chandler has done a great job of winning at all the levels and has made his way to the PBR’s Unleash the Beast Tour.

The MBR, Miniature Bull Riders, is operated by Cirildo and Lillie Leal to give the really young riders a chance to compete and hone their skills in and out of the arena. Georgia Akers spent some chatting with them and gives a little insight about how the Leals began this great investment in the future of our sport.

We also are glad to introduce, and reintroduce for some of you long time fans, a name that you heard for many years as one of the top ranked professional bull riders but had to cut his riding career short due to some severe injuries. Paulo Crimber is now involved with the PBR as a translator for the Brazilian riders and also working as an agent for some of them, as well. Crimber and his family are enjoying life and doing all that he can to help the next generation of bull riders.

Talking “Bull” with Brayden

My name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bullrider. There are different types of PBR riders.... some are pros and others are young-guns trying to get to the top. Today we will talk about one of my PBR friends, Mason Taylor. So let’s get into it.

Mason recently started riding in the PBR Velocity Tour around the country. His goal this year, like all the guys in the Velocity Tour, is to go to the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas. As many of you know the MBR World Finals are in Vegas at the same time. It would be pretty cool if I made the World Finals and so did he. He won his first PBR event in Deadwood, SD. Mason was the only cowboy to ride all three bulls. He covered Indian Outlaw with 80.5 points, Element 79 with a score of 79.5 and Blaze of Glory in the short go for 82.5 points. He must have liked the way that felt because about a month later he was in the winner seat again winning the second round at Thief River Falls’ PBR in Minnesota.

He competed in and won the Shawnee, Oklahoma’s International Finals Youth Rodeo which is known as the world’s richest youth rodeo and attracts the greatest high school rodeo athletes from around the world. Currently the only association he rides for is the PBR. If he wins two more Velocity Tour events he will definitely be at the PBR World Finals. He is ranked 21st in the Velocity Tour and 70th in the PBR World Standings.

he rides he quickly replied he wanted to ride bulls because his dad rode bulls. He has a list of accomplishment including winning all the big TYBR, Texas Youth Bull Riders, events and the YBR, Youth Bull Riders, World Finals in 2016. He practices at Lonnie Austin’s arena and Cowboy Church of Ellis County. That is how we met Mason. My brother and I also practice at Lonnie’s and CCEC. He said what sets him apart from other riders is he wants to be better than guys that are just mediocre. I think that is smart.... We should all try to be the best we can be.

A Tribute to My Dad James H. Custer April 23, 1939 - July 30, 2018

Jim was born in Phoenix, Arizona on April 23, 1939 to Jack and Gladys Custer. Jim attended and graduated from Prescott High School in 1957.

In his early years, Jim was very athletic and was a state finalist, golden gloves boxer, an avid hunter, fisherman, and swimmer (having spent many years as a lifeguard at Granite Dells in Prescott). While in high school, Jim was a guitar player and singer in bands with such notable musicians as Richie Albright (drummer for Waylon Jennings), and Jim Monnett and Bob Baller of the Arizona Elvis Presley as a bull rider in the movie Stay Away Joe, as Outlaws. well as riding bulls in The Rounders with Henry Fonda Jim then attended Northern Arizona University where he and Glenn Ford. This also led to other stunt and extra majored in art. During those years, he met his lifelong, work in the movies Distant Trumpet, Junior Bonner, and best friend, Cal Baird who got him a spot on the NAU the television series The Monroes. rodeo team as a bareback and bull rider, and later went on to get his PRCA card. They were married in Williams, Arizona in 1965. Soon after, they gave birth to their first son Cody, who was later followed by Brett, JimBob, and then Connie.

soon became a top-selling realtor in the local Wickenburg area before another accident slowed him down, and his health and quality of life began to decline.

While living in Prescott, Jim worked for a dentist doing crown and bridgework working with silver and gold, which sparked his interest in becoming a silversmith and jewelry maker. Then, in 1971, Jim and Dixie partnered with his in-laws, Dick & Virgina, to acquire the Diamond M Campground and Rodeo Arena in Flagstaff where they produced several rodeos and team roping events. Jim soon became a very competitive, professional team roper.

Before Jim’s passing, he was able to travel to Colorado Springs last year to see his son Cody inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, which was a family reunion of sorts celebrating their family’s lifelong journey, sacrifices, and hard work coming to fruition and culminating in a very proud moment for all of them.

Jim moved his family to Roseburg, Oregon in 1976 where he worked for the Christiansen Brothers Rodeo Company and furthered his rodeo career as a professional team roper.

During this time, Jim also learned to engrave, which later led to him and Dixie starting their own trophy buckle company. After a few years, Jim and his family returned to Arizona, living in Kingman for a year while he was working on the construction of Interstate 40 before finally settling down and making their home in Wickenburg in 1979.

Jim, Dixie, and their sons spent many years traveling the rodeo circuit and were actively involved in all aspects of rodeo. Jim was the National Director of Arizona to the National Board of the NHSRA for 12 years. It was in Wickenburg that Jim and Dixie’s Championship Trophy Buckles business began to flourish having made buckles for many well-known celebrities and musical artists, in addition to providing buckles to top rodeos across the United States.

In 1980, Jim was involved in a team roping accident that left him with six broken vertebrates in his neck and paralyzed from the neck down for a period of time. It was a very traumatic and tumultuous time for the Custer family. The accident, however, eventually led Jim to get back into his singing, and ultimately led him to music ministry. He had the opportunity to go to Nashville and record an album with a top producer that had produced albums for the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson. Jim’s musical talents were recognized by the Country Gospel Music Association where he was the recipient of two awards.

Although, Jim’s physical quality of life was hindered for a good many years, he was blessed with numerous accomplishments, experiences, and relationships that made for a very rich and full life, of which only a glimpse is being shared here. Jim touched many lives in his time on earth and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and, welcomed in heaven by all those who went before him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Gladys, sons Brett and Danny, daughter Connie, and grandson Aaron. He is survived by his wife Dixie of 53 years; daughter Shawna Custer of Arizona; sons Cody (Stacey) Custer of Oklahoma; JimBob (Mardi) Custer of Washington; brothers Charles (Arlene) Custer of Florida and David (Nancy) Custer of Colorado; six grandchildren: Lacey and Brett Custer; Brittany O’Hair, Paige, Marty, Hailey, Shelby (LaCosse), and Imari Custer; and eight great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Bruce, Kylie, Phillip, Steven, Michael, and David; his brother-in-law Danny Tatum, nephew Brett (Keylie) Tatum; sister-in-law Gwendolyn Tatum Glattfelder, nieces Brenda Prudham, Donda (Phil) Pothen, Jolonda (Mike) Britain, and nephew JD Edwardson.

Silvano Alves has taken his family on a bull riding vacation each December when they visit the National Finals Rodeos as spectators. Silvano for some time has had the urge to compete in the PRCA while still riding in the PBR to see if he could achieve greatness in both.

While Alves the three time PBR World Champion has established his mark as one of their all time greats the PRCA has beckoned.

This summer he has decided to establish some credentials in the PRCA and hit the rodeo trail.

Kansas with one of the seasons highest PRCA marks. His 91 point ride, currently tied for the 3rd best score of the season, edged out Sage Kimzey for the buckle.

Also on his way to a bright future is Brett Custer, son of the great Cody Custer, sitting fourth in the rookie standings. _________________________________________________

Each season for the past nine years during the PBR summer break he has taken the family back to Brazil for rest and to visit family and friends.

Let’s go from young gun to established gun fighter. Four time PRCA Champion J.W. Harris is coming on strong this summer and fighting his way back to the NFR. In early August he won the coveted Dodge City Roundup then came back a week later to collect the buckle at the Lea County Fair and Rodeo.

This summer Silvano threw the dice, bought an RV and hit the road with his wife and kids for a new adventure.

J Dubs August frenzy has vaulted him currently into the 15th and final NFR slot.

The results as of this writing have been positive. Alves currently sits 5th in the 2018 Resistol Rookie of the Year Standings and sits 41st in PRCA overall money. Not bad for a part time competitor.

While Silvano does not have a chance to gain a coveted top 15 finish to qualify for the NFR or challenge for Rookie of the Year he has proven that down the road he has a legitimate chance to become a competitor and not spectator at the NFR.

_________________________________________________ Speaking of PRCA rookies it appears that this season a new crop of young guns are showing that the future of bull riding in the rodeo end of things is strong.

Clayton Sellers, the Florida born bull rider, is running away in the Resistol standings. Not only is Clayton turning heads as a rookie, but he is also in position to qualify for his first ever NFR. Sellers is currently 11th in money.

Jasper, Texas native Braden Richardson is another young gun to watch. He recently won the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene,

A PRCA cowboy, with a name you will never forget, as of this writing is having a great August. Garrett “Gumby” Wren has won two rodeos’ including one in his hometown of Sidney, Iowa.

Not only did Gumby win in Sidney but he achieved a special distinction. 6 Tips to Reduce Shoulder Pain Shoulder pain is one of the most common causes of discomfort in adults. We use our shoulders to do many of our everyday activities from holding a hair dryer to reaching up to put something away.

Whether you have stiffness, weakness, or soreness, shoulder pain can interfere with your daily routine.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain The rotator cuff is the made up of tendons and muscles, which stabilize the shoulder and allow you to rotate and raise your arm. Unfortunately, the rotator cuff is a common site of injury.

Injuries of the rotator cuff may include: Bursitis: Bursitis is a common cause of shoulder pain in adults. The shoulder joint contains fluid-filled sacs called bursae. The bursae cushion the joint and decrease friction between the bone and muscle. Shoulder bursitis involves inflammation of the bursae.

The inflammation causes swelling, which means there is less space in the shoulder for the tendons and muscle to move and range of motion can be affected. Bursitis can develop due to excessive use of the shoulder.

Symptoms of shoulder bursitis include pain around the outside of the shoulder, decreased range of motion, and pain when the shoulder is touched.

Tendonitis: Tendons connect the muscles to the bones. When the tendons in the shoulder become inflamed, the condition is called shoulder tendonitis or rotator cuff tendonitis. Tendonitis can be acute or chronic. Acute shoulder tendonitis can develop due to a sudden injury to the tendon. The condition can also become chronic due to repetitive wear and tear of the tendon.

Symptoms of rotator cuff tendonitis include pain on the top of the shoulder and trouble raising the arm overhead.

Arthritis: Arthritis can also cause shoulder pain. There are different types of arthritis including osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of the disease. Osteoarthritis in the shoulder often occurs due to wear and tear of the joint over time. Pain

usually starts out mild and progressively gets worse. Symptoms of osteoarthritis of the shoulder include pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion.

Tips to Reduce Shoulder Pain Shoulder pain can interfere with work, sports, and everyday activities. In many cases, resting the shoulder along with home treatment can ease discomfort. Consider some of the following tips:

Change activities: Shoulder pain due to repetitive motions may require a little change in your activities. Avoiding overdoing certain activities is a good first step to decrease shoulder pain.

Shoulder pain is a common complaint with a variety of causes. A natural approach to reducing shoulder pain is often an excellent place to start. Treatment including rest, ice, and stretches is usually helpful to improve functioning and decrease pain.

Apply cold packs: Applying an ice pack to the affected shoulder can decrease pain and inflammation. The ice numbs the area and also causes the blood vessels to constrict, which can decrease swelling. You should apply ice for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time about four to six times a day. Using ice is especially helpful the first three days after injuring the shoulder.

Perform stretches: Several types of stretches can help decrease shoulder pain. It’s always advisable to talk with your doctor to determine what stretches you should do. In general, it’s helpful to target the deltoids, which are the front, side, and back of the shoulders.

In recent months, I have received numerous letters from readers of Inspiration Point desiring to study God’s Word through online correspondence and such. It made me stop and think about just how bleak the world can be when you don’t have God in control of your life. My late father, the originator of the Inspiration Point article, was a faithful minister of the Lord’s church for many decades. However, hat wasn’t always the case with him. Being raised in a Navy family, which moved around often, he didn’t have a lot of exposure to church other than when he was a young child.

After high school and a stint in the Navy himself, he traveled the country working on ranches from Montana to Arizona. He met my mother while he was in Prescott, Arizona working on the set of the Steve McQueen movie, Junior Bonner. It was through her influence that he became more familiar with God and began going to church which led to his deep devotion and dedication to the ministry. More than once I heard him describe the peace that came into his life once he allowed God in.

My point being, we NEED God in our lives. Not just as our Copilot, but as our Pilot. I’m reminded of an article by Kevin Cauley which is included it below.

A few years ago there was a popular bumper sticker that many placed upon their vehicles. It said, “God is my co-pilot.” While I appreciate the sentiment of people desiring for God to be in their lives, the concept is flawed. The idea of a co-pilot is someone who is there in case the pilot needs help. He steps in when the pilot is not in control.

The Bible, however, is telling us that God needs to be our pilot—not our co-pilot—because God needs to be in control of our lives at all times!

Is God the pilot of your life or co-pilot?

Think about what Jesus said in the garden of Gethsemane. He prayed for the cup of suffering to pass from Him, but in the end He stated, “not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39) and “not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). If this was Jesus’ attitude in the face of the cross, it should be our attitude at every moment of our life. God calls us to be “living sacrifices” (Romans 12:1). This means that we put God in the pilot’s seat, and let Him drive.

Here’s the great thing about this. Life is so much better when God is driving! We can never be fulfilled seeking our own agenda because we really don’t know what is good for us (Jeremiah 17:9), but God

Crock Pot Pecan Pie INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •

1 refrigerated pie crust 4 eggs, lightly beaten 1 1/3 cups light corn syrup 1 cup sugar 1/3 cup salted butter, melted 1/8 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 cups pecan halves, divided use

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Line a 5 or 6 quart oval slow cooker with parchment paper (12.5 inch x 16 inch). Press the paper down into the slow cooker to create an outline of the bottom of the cooker.

2. Remove parchment paper and place unrolled pie crust onto the parchment paper (lining it up with the creases from the outline in the parchment paper). Gently roll up the edges of the pie crust and make small indentations to help the crust stick to the parchment paper and to keep in the filling better.

3. Place parchment paper/pie crust into slow cooker (pastry should extend 2 to 3 inches up the sides). Bend and fold the pastry as needed to get it to fit properly in the bottom of the crock pot.

4. In a bowl combine the eggs, corn syrup, sugar, melted butter, cinnamon and vanilla. Whisk until smooth.

5. Stir in 1 cup of the pecans. Note: You can chop up these pecans if you like smaller bits in your pie.

6. Gently pour mixture into crust in the slow cooker.

7. Then top with remaining cup of pecans. Placing them evenly in a pattern to make a nice presentation.

8. Place a layer of paper towels on top of the slow cooker then cover with the lid. (The paper towels just help collect excess condensation that is produced during the baking process.)

9. Cook on high for 3 to 3 1/2 hours or until filling is puffed and set.When pie is finished, turn off slow cooker. Let stand, uncovered, for a minimum of 1 hour. It’s really important to let the pie cool completely. It will make it easier to remove and serve.

10. Cut and serve straight from the slow cooker. Or gently lift the parchment paper from the crock pot and then slice and serve.

Lillie & Cirildo Leal

One of the fun things that I like to do in Vegas at the PBR finals is go to South Point and watch the mini-bull riding. These riders are the PBR stars of tomorrow. If you have not attended their world finals in Vegas, make plans to do so. I know very little about the sport, so I reached out to the people who not only raise them but are active in putting events on and really were the foundation of the mini bull riding program. They have been instrumental in getting it where it is today. My original phone call was catching them on the road, going to an event which is where you find them most weekends. Readers, meet Lillie and Cirildo Leal.

Tell us about your background.

Lillie was raised in a small town named Silverton, TX and 17 miles down the caprock, Quitaque, TX is where Cirildo was raised. We have both worked very hard since we were kids, mostly on the farm. We just celebrated 43 years of marriage in May. We have 6 beautiful daughters, 2 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and another grandbaby on the way.

How did you get into the sport of miniature bull riding?

At first, we got a show cow from the Fosters Brothers located here in Lockney, TX thinking our youngest daughter, Kimberly, could show.

Elsie, the cow, ended up getting really big and too playful to handle.

One day Lillie was getting her hair done at the beauty salon in Quitaque, TX when she was looking through a magazine call “Country Woman”. There was an article about miniature cattle and how they take less land and not as much to feed.

In 2009, we moved to Lockney, because Cirildo had a heart attack and being almost 2 hours from a hospital, we thought it would be good to move closer. I told Cirildo we should look into finding miniature cattle and that they would be cute to have and could be pets. So we had our daughters search the internet for some and that’s where we discovered that kids actually rode miniature bulls. In 2011, we decided to hold a miniature bull riding finals in Ogden, UT and we invited Chris Shivers out and named it after him. Ever since then we have been going and thank Chris Shivers for teaming up with us the year after and is still a part of the event.

How did you become a stock contractor?

We bought a couple of bulls when we first started looking, but they ended up being stunted bulls so we didn’t get to use them but still kept them and raised them. We used to hire people to bring in miniature bulls for us but, in 2012 right before we were getting ready to have an event out in Jonesville, LA at Chris Shivers Arena, we got a call from Oklahoma that there was a gentleman selling their mini bulls if we were interested. We headed that way and loaded up with a trailer full of bulls. In 2011, we loved a bull named Powerstroke (he had another name before we got him) but for us to get him we had to buy 20 miniature cows that were bred to him already. Since then, we have just been breeding and raising our own stock. We still have some of our first bulls, but have lost some due to age.

You do a lot more for the sport. Tell us of your other activities.

Besides doing miniature bull riding, we also have another organization that is mini bull riding and junior bull riding called Leal’s Junior Bull Riding Champion that qualifies kids from the ages 10-18 years old to the JrNFR in December during the NFR. Most people think this is all we do, but we do have a trucking business called Leal Custom Hauling & Grinding that keeps us

busy full time with delivering cotton all year along and with grinding hay and cotton. Many people have come to visit just to see what we do and are usually surprised to see we do a lot of working here whether it’s with the bulls, cows, or the trucks.

We stay busy. We take our bull, Radar, to PBR events for the TV station to talk about bull riding, along with going to events that PBR hosts.

How do you find sponsors and places for events?

When we first got started we held a couple events out at Chris Shivers arena in Jonesville, LA, then throughout years some parents would ask to sponsor an event and they would pick the location of the event. Last year, in August, we held our first event in our brand new indoor arena that we built in Lockney so a majority of events were held here this year, and we have our local businesses that are sponsors. The MBR gets to be presented by the PBR and they help us hold 2 major events, which has been in Arlington, TX before but the last 2 years in Los Lunas, NM and then our last event in Las Vegas before finals, and then our finals. The JRNFR holds our finals for our Leal’s Junior Bull Riding Championship and we have a lady that helps us get sponsors for that event.

Tell us how the mini bull riding circuit works. (How many levels, age of riders, events) In the MBR, we have 3 age levels, which our Pee Wee Division is ages 8 to 9 years old, Junior division is 10-11 years old, and seniors is 12-14 years old. Their birthdate goes as of January 1st of the year. Since these are smaller bulls and for the bulls safety we have a weight limit in each division, but most of the kids are small. We like to have at least 6 events a year, before our finals. We go to 10 PBR events throughout the year and also get hired for other rodeos to take the mini bulls too. We stay pretty busy!

Tell us about the breeding and care of the mini bulls.

I guess you could call us old-fashioned, but we breed by having certain miniature cows in a pasture and others in another pasture and then we pick a bull for each pasture and just let the bull stay in the pasture for about 2 or 3 months. Cirildo gets on to us most of the time because he says we treat them like little babies, because many of these bulls love to get their backs massaged. When they are little, they stay in the pasture with their moms then when they are about 9 months to a year old, we haul them out to where we keep the other bulls. We then divide them into 2 groups.

They are housed in large pens, because they start to get their daily grain we use on all our bucking stock. When they get sick we get them loaded up and take them to the vet. The vet knows if we see one with a runny nose and we know its from the weather we will have them go in for a shot. We take very good care of our herd!! They are family too.

I notice that some of the bull look like miniature brahmas and some do not. How do you breed them? Which is the better breed to have?

You might have seen Radar before at PBR activites and on TV. Radar and his little bull buddies came from Florida and they are miniature zebus. Some of our bulls are probably half zebu that we have bought over the years. We have a couple of mini zebu, longhorn, and dexter cows. We look at the height, color, and if the mom is a spinner or bucker the dad we look at the same thing to determine which ones to breed. We really love all of our breeds and have noticed so many buck just the same even though they are different breeds.

What do you look for in a miniature bull? Heifer?

What we look for in a miniature bull or heifer is their physique and their color. We love all our animals no matter what, but we love seeing all the different markings they have. As most people say they can tell my minis from others because we have so many that have huge horns. Our bigger cows and smaller bulls make the right sized baby we have noticed. We have bred too small before when it was a small cow with a small bull. We say now we have micro mini’s which make it hard because the kids can be too big for them.

What is the average cost?

The average cost to buy a mini is about $1,000 to $1,500. It all depends on the quality of the bull. As for taking care of our mini bulls and cows, the average cost per year can add up to the six figures with all their feed, vet bills, transportation and our labor that we have to help with them.

At the bucking events what do the judges look for in scoring?

How do they score?

We like to hire professional judges at our events and they have told me they look for the same thing they would in a big bull and they get scored the same way.

The circuit actually has finals in Las Vegas when the PBR has its world finals. Who chooses the bulls?

Yes, we do have our finals out there when the PBR does and we are so thankful for the PBR having us as a part. As for the bulls, there are 3 stock contractors now including us, Leal miniature bucking bulls, S&S mini bulls from New Mexico, and then Sundown Mini Bulls from Lamesa, TX. We try to make it even on all stock contractors since Vegas is a long trip, but we all just look at the bulls’ performance and determine which should go. Our daughter, who is the secretary, goes over which one will be going out each round and we look it over to see if we agree.

How are the riders selected for the finals?

We have a point system so that at every event these kids are working towards points. After the last chance qualifier that we have in Las Vegas, the top 10 contestants in each age division continue to the world finals.

What are the prizes awarded to the riders?

Every event that we host, we give out a Montana Silversmith buckle to each division for each round and average. At the end of the year, the World Champion receives a saddle and buckle, the reserve champion gets a set of Montana Silversmith spurs and a buckle. Winners of the events get the display coroplast sheet checks and the kids love those more than the real checks. We try to do something each year for all contestants like giving out 5.11 bags or jackets.

Are the bulls also competing?

We do look at the bulls’ scores to determine an even match in the divisions and we used to award a bull of the year, but having 3 divisions and 3 contractors we decided we would just award our contractors with a gift at the end of the year.

Are there many injuries with the riders? What kind is the most common?

It’s a dangerous sport even with the mini bulls. At our events we

see kids get hung up on the bull (majority of the kids tell us it’s because they don’t open their hands) and get stepped on. We have had a kid break his femur, another kid break his arm, and another one break his leg. We have had riders out due to injuries that happened at other events. The most common we see at our events is mostly bruising where the bulls end up stepping on them. We want safety for the kids and bulls.

You are dealing with young men/women in the sport. Is there any extra TLC necessary when they have a bad ride due to their age?

As the owners and the people associated with the sport, we feel that when the kids have had a bad ride and have time to calm themselves down, we like to tell them how awesome they did in our eyes and how we are proud of them and they will get it done next time. They are kids and we don’t want any of them to be real hard on themselves.

If someone is interested in getting into this business, what would you advise.

Really think about it because it takes a lot of money, more than we ever thought, time and dedication to these animals. If your animal lovers like us, it makes it 10x harder because we don’t ever sell them because they are our babies. It is fun and nice to watch these young athletes.

What do you think is the best part of being involved in this sport?

The best part for being involved in this sport is meeting all the kids, their families, just meeting new people in general at events, and getting to travel new places. We have seen so many new states going places with our little bulls, and of course the animals. We love our babies. They have become family to us. Getting to know Chris Shivers over the years has been great. He has helped us in so many ways with the sport of mini bull riding.

Did you grow up rodeoing?

We are asked this question a lot and many are surprised to know we didn’t grow up in a rodeo family. Our daughters just played sports in school and we just worked all the time to make sure we made a very nice living for us and our family.

We used to ride Harley Davidson motorcycles for the fun of it, until we got interested in the bulls. We watched PBR at home, went to one or two finals in Vegas, and we would attend the Silverton Rodeo, but that was about it.

Andrews Rodeo Company

Terry Blake, owner and editor of Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine, went to the Wild Thing Championship Bull Riding last month, at the Red Rock State Park in Gallup, New Mexico. While he was enjoying one of the wildest events in bull riding, Terry ran into Sammy Andrews, one of the most respected and well-known cowboys in rodeo stock contracting. Andrews Rodeo Company provided bucking bulls for the event.

Humps N Horns ran an article on Sammy and Andrews Rodeo Company back in August of 2014. We decided to re-visit Sammy in this issue. Some of you may not know who Sammy is, but you probably all recognize the name of one of his most famous bucking bulls, Bodacious. He has been dubbed the world’s most dangerous bull.

“Bodacious was quite a celebrity,” Sammy shared. “His name is known all over the world, like the famous race horse Secretariat.

We bought Bodacious from Phil Sumner when he was two years old. The first place we took him was Lufkin, Texas, where Bubba Dunn covered him the first time out of the box. I was really wondering then what kind of a bull we’d bought. The next week we hauled him to Houston, where he jerked Cody Lambert around and gave him a shaving scar. I think that’s when the legend got started.”

“The first cowboy he roughed up was Terry Don West. But his deal with Tuff Hedeman was kind of the ‘shot heard round the world’,” Sammy continued. “Then when Scot Breding got hurt, we decided to retire him. It was a tough decision, because Bodacious was in his prime. But we didn’t want to see anyone get killed.”

Bodacious was retired during the final round of the 1995 NFR (National Finals Rodeo) and passed away at the age of 12 in 2000.

Bodacious was ridden only eight times in 135 outs. He was the 1994 and 1995 PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year, and the first PBR Bull of the Year in 1995. He was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Bull Riding Hall of Fame in 2017. His celebrity continued to grow after his retirement.

The Andrews family at Cheyenne Frontier Days

“We hauled Bodacious to fairs and rodeos all over the country for a couple of years,” Sammy reflected. “He was featured in a lot of magazine and newspaper articles. I’m a humble man and I don’t like to brag, but it was very gratifying to see his fame grow.”

Andrews Rodeo Company currently provides bucking stock to the PRCA at some of the biggest rodeos in the country. “We have about 50 bulls that we haul,” Sammy explained. “We also have 25 three-year olds, 35-40 two-year olds, and about 50 yearlings.

We raise just about all the bulls that we buck.” They also raise and provide roping stock and bucking horses for the PRCA and produce several rodeos a year as well. The next event for the Andrews Rodeo Company is the North Texas Fair and Rodeo Bull Blowout in Denton, Texas, August 17-25.

The Andrews ranch is located near the tiny, North Texas community of Addielou. “Our official address is listed as Bagwell, Texas, because that’s the closest town with a post office. We are 18 miles north of Bagwell,” Sammy declared. “There’s only about seven of us in Addielou, so there’s no post office there.”

favorites. They are real electric and you never know what to expect of them. One is F42 Velocity, and the other is F16 Rum Dum.” “Velocity has the whole package,” Sammy said. “A lot of up and down and whip to him. He’s had about 20 outs this year. He gets better and better each out. I think he’s going to be something special. Rum Dum has never done the same thing twice. He’s electric! But he’s dumber than a box of rocks. When he was a calf, he was always into something. He did dumb stuff all the time.” that and all the advertising. We three do most of the everyday operation of the ranch, but we have a rodeo crew that travels with us to each event.”

When asked what was new with Andrews Rodeo Company, Sammy laughed and said, “We just keep doing what we always do.

Kind of the same old, same old. I’m still truck driving. As a matter of fact, I’m leaving Oklahoma for home right now. One thing that’s new is my grandkids are now involved in it. It’s really rewarding for me. It makes it really nice to have family involved.”

“We’ve got some real good four-year olds, and a couple of good looking three-year olds,” Sammy added. “I’ve got a couple of

In conclusion, Sammy declared, “America has gone soft. Some cowboys have gone soft, too. You have to be tough to be a cowboy.

Be gritty about it! My advice to young bull riders coming up is to go to school and learn how to do it right. When we were coming up, the only school we had was the school of hard knocks! Now you can get a college education riding a bull.”

Tye Chandler

Looking to Make His Mark in the PBR

Tye Chandler might only be 23 years of age but becoming a professional bull rider has been 18 years in the making.

Interestingly, while Tye got on his first calf when he was five years old, he did not compete in any type of school rodeos like so many other riders. He and his family would watch bull riding on television, and his dad Freddy and older brother Josh actually rode bulls, although neither competed in anything big.

“My dad rode a little bit, but he didn’t have a lot of money back then, so he never really competed a lot. He would ride when he had the money, but it was hard to travel around at that time. There weren’t as many associations then either, so there weren’t many events close to where we lived.

“Josh rode bulls around home, and I would just go and get on the steers they had. From then on I just fell in love with it. Luckily, when I got old enough to start riding calves and steers there were quite a few associations pretty close to us that I could go to. It has always been a dream of mine to ride in the PBR and win a World Championship.

As soon as Chandler was old enough he got his PRCA card and went to as many pro rodeos around Texas as possible. When he could get in, that is.

“There are big qualification things,” Tye explained, “so if you’re new it’s hard to get entered. So I just went to as many as I could and I won enough money to get my card or permit, or whatever. I rodeoed the next year too, and then in 2015 I went to the CBR. All my buddies and roommates were going, so I went too. I made it to the CBR Finals that year.

“The next year I didn’t go to many bull ridings. I went to a few CBR events the beginning of the year, but I ended up sitting out for a time after puncturing a lung and breaking some ribs.”

When he came back it was right at the end of the PBR season. At that point he wanted to make the move to see just what the PBR was like.

“I went to about four or five events near the end of the season,” Tye said. “Then the next year, 2016, I went to PBR events all year.

I don’t want to be anywhere else now.”

For the most part Tye has been able to stick with the same traveling partners that he has been with all along.

“We have a little group that went to the Velocity events together – Taylor Toves, Justin Granger, Ricky Aguiar, and Keyshawn Whitehorse. We all live close to each other except Justin, so it’s pretty easy. Justin comes when he can. When I moved up to the Unleash the Beast tour it was pretty much just me and Keyshawn, but Justin made it on right before the summer break.”

Tye found it hard to name his favorite ride to date. He laughed when he told us that he didn’t have any big 90-point rides yet, so he wasn’t sure what to pick. But he didn’t have any trouble naming his two favorite venues, and they are total opposites of each other.

“I really like Albuquerque. I don’t know if it’s because it’s so small

and close. It’s just a way different kind of set-up that you don’t really see anywhere else. It is such a small area and you get so many people; it gets so loud there and that’s exciting.

“And of course, Cowboy Stadium,” he continued. “I live 45 minutes away from there, and that is just one of the coolest places you could possibly go to. It’s totally opposite The Pit in Albuquerque, and it’s crazy that they pack that place, too. With Cowboy Stadium, a lot of my family and friends get to come and watch, and it’s not very often that you get that.”

Chandler also had no problem naming what bull he would pick to get on.

“Bruiser for sure,” he said without hesitation. “I’ve been on him already. At the beginning of the year PBR called me and said they had a spot for me. I told them that of course I would be there. I was 12th in the world at the time, so I got in the 15 / 15, and I had Bruiser there. That was cool, competing in my first ever BFTS event and getting on Bruiser. I think the hype got to me, but it was a cool experience. You live and learn.

“They were really blowing (the match-up) up and I was trying to focus on one bull at a time. Before I even got on my first round bull people were asking me about it. I was like, ‘Hey, its two days away! I got two bulls to get on before him,’” Tye said, laughing.

“They would ask how I felt about it, and I would tell them that I was trying not to think too much about it, he’s just another bull.

‘But you all keep asking the question and making a big deal about

it, so now that you brought it up, it’s kind of hard not to think about it.’”

Tye did not ride very much during the summer break. He went to a few right off the bat and placed in a couple of them, and then he hurt his knee in Rocksprings Texas, the end of June and had to sit out. When asked how he was feeling now, he had this to say.

“Funny story, I entered Santa Barbara the beginning of August and that was my first one back. It was a freak accident; I caught the flank coming off with my spur and it yanked me back under him and I twisted my knee again. As of right now I’m back out. I have a little brace that Tandy Freeman gave me and I think it’s gonna work out. I’ll be out a couple of weeks, and then put this brace on.

It should support it enough to go back.

“So I tore a piece of the knee at Rocksprings and I tore it again in Santa Barbara. There’s not really much to do for it,” Chandler continued. “Some therapy and rest. It just takes time, honestly.”

Tye’s favorite hobby is snowboarding, so it’s probably a good thing that it is not winter time right now, considering that injured knee.

“I think if I didn’t ride bulls I would try to be a professional snowboarder, although I’m not really good,” he laughed. “Trick wise I’m not that good, but I really love it. Other than that though, during my off time I ride horses a lot around the house and fish a lot, anything outside.”

Tye wanted to give a shout-out to his agent Scott Grover, and to thank his sponsors Full Bore, American Rodeo Gear, and Real Time Pain Relief. Those sponsors really help to keep Tye and all the other bull riders on the road.

“Most people don’t realize how much those sponsors help. They just see that we can make a lot of money, but they never see how much we spend to do this. There is the plane ticket, the hotels, the food! They don’t think of that, just that one of us got a big paycheck at the end of the year.”

Chandler is a very personable young man with a great attitude, and Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine want to wish him well when he returns to action. In closing, Tye wanted people to know just where he gets the strength to power through.

“People should know that Jesus is the reason that I’m able to do everything. I have ‘Pray’ and ‘Jesus’ on my shirt. I put Him first and He’s the one who gave me the ability to do this. I just want to try to influence people in a positive way.”

PAULO CRIMBER Living the Good Life!

When you ask fans to name some of their favorite bull riders the name Paulo Crimber is often mentioned, even though he has not been in the arena as a bull rider since 2012. And that year he only went to five events. Still, people remember his talent and his exuberance and still recognize him as a great bull rider, and for good reason. Paulo qualified for the World Finals seven years in a row and had a very successful career.

He retired earlier than he would have liked. The two broken necks he suffered practically back-to-back made that decision almost a necessity. Almost, but not quite.

Crimber first broke his neck in St. Louis, Missouri early in the 2008 season. A short three months later he made his return, but it was a brief one. In a mere 5.4 seconds of his first ride back he was bucked off and broke his neck again. Three years later the call of competition lured him back once more.

“I came back in 2011,” Paulo told Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine. “I rode all year and did well here but I did better in Brazil. But I was going through some ups and downs with my neck pain, and that’s when the PBR offered me a job to go work for them in Brazil. I was the Judge Director and also was a translator. I did that for two years before I came back to Texas.”

Paulo did not have a specific plan as to what to do when he finally hung up his spurs, but two things he was sure of; to remain with the PBR in some capacity, and continue to live in Texas.

“I always wanted to be involved with the PBR,” he told us.

“That’s what brought me over and that’s my life. I want to stay involved with the sport of bull riding. And now I have this great opportunity with them; they’ve hired me full time as a translator. That became official at the Iron Cowboy event this year.

“I love it,” Paulo continued. “I love it because I get to be with my buddies. I was judging and I had to pick between that and the translation, because that’s a conflict of interest. I chose to be a translator one, because it was full-time and two, that puts no bridges between my relationship with my buddies in the bull riding. I can still talk to them and hang out with them, and that’s what I do. That also gives me the opportunity to help my friends out.

“Also, I love being able to help the kids express themselves during an interview. Vitor Leme won the first event back after the summer break and he was able to describe how he was feeling, and the fans get to know him. I think that’s great, because the fans don’t know who a lot of these guys are or what they’re like.”

As far as Texas is concerned, Paulo and his family never want to leave. They moved there in 2000 and have deep roots there now.

“We love Texas! We’ve always been here. That trip we made to Brazil when I went to work for the PBR those couple of years kind of helped us realize that we cannot move away from here, Texas is our home now. We couldn’t be in Brazil anymore.

“We both still have family in Brazil. My mom and dad are there.

They divorced when I was six years old but they are both there.

And my wife Maria’s dad has passed but her mom is there, and brothers and sisters – all the family is still there, but for us our family is here now. We’ve been married 18 years and we just grew up our own family between us, and as long as we have each other we’re good.

“And we’ve got our PBR family as well. That’s a big part of the deal. They treat us great. I am just blessed to be here. Now with this PBR job I can do something I love to do and get paid doing it. I’m making a living out of that, and that’s really good.”

Being a full time translator puts Crimber back on the road and

away from his family on most weekends. That is not too hard on Paulo, but he feels it probably affects his 13-year-old son John the most. John is a talented up-and-coming bull rider in his own right.

In the middle of August John won a mini bull riding event in Tulsa. Paulo was able to be there, but often he can’t make it.

“The weekend I’m in Nashville he will be riding in Decatur and I won’t be there to help him out. That’s when it becomes a little hard for both of us when I’m gone; not to be able to help him during his performance. But Maria takes him and videos his rides, and I have a bunch of buddies that can kind of help him.

“He knows really what he needs to do, where his rope needs to be, how to take his wrap and stuff like that that I taught him. It really is incredible what he can do by himself, but it’s always good to be there to have his back. But he’s got his own Instagram now puts up his rides and stuff.”

Crimber does not raise bucking bulls. He works some Black Angus cattle as well as being what he refers to as a day worker on a ranch, which includes breaking horses and roping. One thing is for sure, he is busy with something every day.

And just to make sure he does not get bored, Paulo is also an agent for several of the Brazilians that are here. He began doing that at the World Finals last year. Among those who are helping as sponsors are Monster Energy, Wrangler, Rockstar, Ariat, Lane Frost Brand, and American Hats.

You might guess from all of his activities that Crimber does not have a lot of spare time, and that is right. But he has no hesitation whatsoever in describing what he does with any extra time; he spends it with his family.

“I will play with the kids; watch a movie, whatever they want to do. That’s my hobby really, being with my family.

I spend time with John on practice bulls and take my daughter Helena to swimming class. She is about to start piano class also. So I really try to spend my spare time with my family.”

Paulo and I got to talking about the Ring of Honor. He discussed the probability of never receiving that award, but without any bitterness or anger whatsoever. He loves the PBR, and has made that quite clear. He has been in the sport since he was eight years old and believes he contributed to it in a positive way and is still contributing now, just going up a different road. His thought on the subject of being gifted with that honor was more like “I wonder if…”

When all is said and done things could not be better for Paulo right now. Yes, he had to quit competing in the sport he loves, but he is able to stay involved in so many other ways. He has a wonderful family that mean the world to him. And his son John is following in his father’s footsteps as a winning bull rider. Life for the Crimbers is pretty darn good!

With most of these sponsors there is guaranteed money, as well as a bonus program where the men also get bonus money depending on where they finish in the event. Sometimes they get products, but usually it is money.

“For example,” Crimber explained, “Vitor Leme, his main sponsor is Monster Energy Drinks and his secondary is Ariat. They do so much money and so much product. Dener Barbosa has Rockstar Energy Drink as the primary and Wrangler as his secondary. I also have Luciano de Castro and Claudio Montanha, and my son is sponsored by Levi. We just started, so we’re doing really well. I feel like we’ve done great for the first year.”

RETIRED RODEO CLOWNS

The Fort Worth Stockyards pulled out all the stops for the National Day of the Cowboy. The Cowtown Coliseum and the Stockyards Heritage invited the Rodeo Clown Reunion to join them in celebration. What a celebration they had! The Fort Worth Stockyards Historical District is an amazing destination for international visitors to come to get their “western fix”. But it is also a destination for rodeo fans from across our nation.

The “fix” includes watching the Herd of Texas Longhorn steers parade down the streets twice each day to the delight of the people lining the streets getting photographs of these steers with horns 70 to 80 inches tip to tip. Various venues are available such as the Children’s Petting Zoo, and the Stockyards Stables where visitors can rent a horse and ride along the Trinity River.

They can also attend the Friday and Saturday night rodeos in the Coliseum that was built in 1908. The first indoor rodeo was held there in 1918, and they are celebrating 100 years of rodeo in the Coliseum.

The RODEO CLOWN REUNION was 50 strong – 49 men from the age of 50 to 90, and one fearless woman, whose age remains unknown! The honorees were in attendance at the Stockyards from Friday through Sunday. All had donned their costumes

and makeup from days long past. They signed autographs off and on and also performed various acts in front of the Coliseum from juggling to having stick horse races which the children enjoyed enthusiastically as they raced around pylons against the aging rodeo clowns and a few celebrity racers. They also posed for numerous pictures with spectators.

The Stockyards also held venues up and down Exchange Boulevard including Mustache Contests, Cow Milking Contests, a Rib Eating Contest by Riscky’s, lots of music and more events.

The honorees attending the Rodeo Clown Reunion rode in the parade and assisted at all venues and interacted with visitors from China, Belgium, France, Singapore and many more far away places.

During the evening at the rodeos the honorees which consisted of former bullfighters, barrelmen and laugh-getters entertained the audience with their antics and were introduced from two trailers holding them all. Seventeen states and one Canadian Province were represented. The total number of years in the arena saving cowboys lives and entertaining the audience for the honorees was 998! acts from their past careers during the rodeo.

A Ladies Luncheon was held in the Niles City Inn for the feminine members that accompanied the honorees.

Dixie Reger Mosley, the only female rodeo clown was in attendance, as well, accompanied by her daughter.

Dixie was one of the original Girls Rodeo Association members that began in 1948.

Back in the earliest days of the GRA she competed in most all events and clowned, too. Teresa Burleson, the 2017 Lady Poet of Texas and Devon Dawson whose western musical repertoire is massive entertained with songs and original poems to the delight of the ladies.

One of the important parts of the Rodeo Clown Reunion is the “behind the scenes” time the honorees have in between activities when they can visit and catch up with one another.

They may not have seen each other in years. Some even meet for the very first time because they clowned in different ends of the country. The Reunion is not held every year, but when it is, those who sign up to come are there early and stay late. The Fort Worth Stockyards was no exception some arrived Wednesday and didn’t leave until Monday.

The Rodeo Clown Reunion is an event that can fill the seats at an annual rodeo and they don’t hesitate to visit hospitals and nursing homes locally, as well as, entertain the youth in the area. It is moved from one area of the country to another depending on who sponsors it. The Reunion started in Roseburg, Oregon, in 1974, and was held there every three years until 1989 when it went to Moses Lake,

From there it was has been held in Guthrie, Oklahoma and since then has moved to 14 rodeos including Pendleton RoundUp, Dodge City, KS, Springdale AR, Colorado Springs CO, Deadwood SD, Santa Fe NM, Sheridan WY, Stephenville TX and Coffeyville KS.
