What a month for the sport of bull riding! The PRCA is in the thick of its great winter rodeo run where champions have been crowned in Denver, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and a number of other fantastic rodeos. The PBR has crowned an Iron Cowboy in Cole Melancon. The perennial Iron Cowboy contender Joao Ricardo Vieira dueled with Melancon until the final bull where Cole was able to outlast Vieira.
The Global Cup was two days of exciting, action-packed bull riding. Although our sport has always been marked by a high degree of camaraderie, I don’t think that changes during the Global Cup as we hope to see all of the men make some great rides. However, in what has been billed as The Olympics of bull riding, fans and bull riders, alike, were especially proud to cheer for their countries and their teams. As it has been said so well before, you want the other guy to do his best but you want to ride just a little better.
Melancon was also able to compete in the Global Cup due to Until next time, some last minute injuries for some of the other team members. Melancon delivered for the Team USA Eagles as he made some Terry clutch rides to help propel the Eagles to victory.

Talking “Bull” with Brayden
Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today I’m going to talk about my favorite bulls from my favorite stock contractors of the PBR, so let’s get into it. Starting off we have Hart Cattle Company owned by JW Hart. JW owns many good bulls but my two favorites that he has are Hostage and Canadian Mist. These are two magnificent bulls that you can consistently have outstanding scores on. JW has done a great job raising these bulls. Hostage scored a 44.75 bull score to help Jess Lockwood win the Springfield 15/15 Bucking Battle last season with a 91.25 points and Canadian Mist put up 44.25 points when he was covered for the first time by a right handed rider, Mason Taylor, for 90.5 points last season in the 15/15 Bucking Battle in Oklahoma. These bulls get bathed, are fed a balanced quality diet and are treated like kings. Over all, JW’s bulls are really great and I’m sure that he will have many more top notch bulls to come. Next we have Chad Berger. Chad is a hard working business man making an honest living just trying to live his best life as a stock contractor. Chad has two world champion bulls and both happen to be my favorites. Last season, Smooth Operator clenched his first world title and had some impressive bull scores. Code Blue was Chad’s first world champion bucking bull. This bull has one championship back in 2009 when JB Muaney had the only qualified ride on him. This is contraversial because of a questionable slap they did not have the technology to review like they do today.
Last, we have D&H Cattle Company. Dillon and HD Page have a ton of awesome bucking bulls and a couple world champion bulls. My two favorite bulls that they own are the three time world champion bucking bull Sweet Pro’s Bruiser and Fearless, an up and coming super star bucking bull. Both of these bulls have put up some really high bull scores. My favorite was when Bruiser put up 47.75 points, one of the best scores in the business. Fearless is no slouch himself, being the that he scored 44.25 and 45.75 to help the 2019 rookie of the year, Dalton Kasel, put up two 92 point rides... once in Nampa and once in Nashville. In sports sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned and sometimes it does. The key to success is having a firm foundation and continuing to use that foundation as the platform to correct mistakes and go forward. If you have no vision and no plan toward your goals you will surely fail. Winners don’t rely on talent or luck to take them to the finish line, they rely on a strategic plan, basic core foundations and hard work to sustain them throughout their whole career. Lieutenant Mitch Kempisty, United States Navy, was the subject of the Humps N Horns’ cover feature in the March 2015 issue. A permit holder in the PBR from 2014-2016, Mitch participated in Velocity Tour and Touring Pro Division events, sharing the program May 31, 2014 in Decatur, Texas for the J.W. Hart PBR Challenge with former World Champions J.B. Mauney and Mike Lee. January 14-16, 2020, Mitch was honored by the Surface Navy Association at their annual national symposium in Arlington, Va. as the Navy’s Shiphandler of the Year, having served with distinction the last 6 years in Navy ships homeported in Norfolk, Va. and the Arabian Gulf island nation of Bahrain. Muscle tension is a very common problem and it can affect people of all ages, especially adults. When we talk about muscle tension, what we mean is a feeling of tightness or pressure in a specific muscle or muscle group. While someone might only experience muscle tension, often times pain, soreness, and a restricted range of motion accompany it.
Active Lifestyle
Any muscle in the body can experience this feeling of tension, but it is most common in the muscles of the back, neck, and shoulders. For many people, persistent tension in the muscles of the upper back, neck or shoulders also causes intense headaches.
The best way to prevent this is with regular exercise. If you stay active and condition your muscles for activity, then they are less likely to develop tension after a day of hard work or sport. You don’t even need to make the exercise intense. In fact, pushing yourself too hard is another way to trigger muscle tension.
Muscle tension can be caused by a number of different factors including: • Anxiety and stress • Poor diet • Lack of exercise • Certain illnesses like a flu or cold Since it is not a specific malady or injury, muscle tension can be difficult for a doctor to diagnose and treat. When you tell a doctor that your muscles feel tense, it does not really tell them that much about the problem. Treatment for muscle tension usually requires a broad approach. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. A doctor may recommend a number of things, which may include trying various prescription drugs. You may have to try a few different things before finding what works best. While there might not be a single approach that will work for everybody, there are things that can help. In this article, we look at some of the best natural methods to relieve muscle tension and to prevent it from occurring in the first place.
Muscle tension is often a sign that your muscles are not conditioned for an activity that you have engaged in. For example, if you do not exercise regularly, suddenly deciding to go out and play basketball or helping a friend move furniture, may result in muscle tension.
If you experience muscle tension from other causes, exercise is good for you too. Movement provides relief for muscles that are already tense. Regular exercise promotes healthy muscles, and healthy muscles are less likely to experience tension. You should try exercises that strengthen and stretch the muscles that are affected by tension; this will help loosen up them up. When muscles are really tense, it may be difficult to get up and move. In times like this, you can remain sitting and stretch the muscle and move the associated joint until you feel loosened up enough to get up. Massage When there is a problem with your muscles, massage is one of the best options for relief, especially during an intense bout of tension. Massage relaxes the muscles and relieves tension, and it is also good for pain and soreness. Massage relaxes the stressed muscles. In addition to that, it increases circulation in tight muscles, which promotes healing.

Heat Therapy Heat therapy is by no means a new treatment for muscle tension; people have been using heat to relax their muscles for centuries, and it is still one of the most effective ways to find relief. The idea behind heat therapy is that the heat works to loosen up the muscle fibers, and by doing so, relieves the tension from the muscles. A person can enjoy heat therapy in a number of different ways. One option is dry heat, like an electric heating pad. Some people may prefer moist heat, which can be applied by making a heated compress. Taking a hot bath or shower is also a good method for relief. Beyond just loosening up the muscles and relieving the tension, heat benefits the muscles by promoting circulation in the area. When heat is applied, the capillaries open, allowing more blood to flow to the area. If the muscles are injured, heat is a good way to stimulate a healing response. When we talk about heat therapy, people often address the possibility of using cold compresses to alternate with the heat. However, when it comes to muscle tension, cold can make the issues worse since the body’s natural response to cold is to tense up. For many individuals, applying cold to a tense muscle may actually aggravate the situation. Topical Pain Relievers If you frequently experience muscle tension, you also have a variety of different topical pain relievers that can be good for providing quick relief. When we talk about topical pain relievers, we are talking about the gels and creams that you rub directly on sore joints and muscles. A topical pain reliever can work in a number of ways to treat muscle tension. To start, most of these products create a feeling of heat in the area where they are applied. This sensation can help to distract the mind from pain, and cause the brain to release natural chemicals that trigger a healing response. As an additional point, the sensation created by these creams also promotes blood flow much in the same way that heat therapy does. For a person who has problems with muscle tension, keeping an effective topical pain reliever on hand can work wonders during intense bouts of muscle tension. When you are experiencing the tension and soreness, just rub some of the pain relief lotion into the muscle, and it should offer a quick form of relief. As an additional

Nuts and seeds can be a great source of magnesium, and you also have options like whole grains, peas, soy and fish. You can also apply magnesium oil topically. It can absorb through the skin and be used by the body. While calcium is most commonly associated with healthy bones, it also plays an important role in the healthy function of muscles. If you are looking to add calcium to your diet, you can increase your intake of milk and other dairy products. If you find that you are still calcium deficient even with a healthy intake of dietary calcium, then you may need to consider taking a supplement. Stress Management Psychological triggers like anxiety and stress are some of the most common causes of muscle tension. When a person starts to feel anxious or over-stressed, the muscles can react by tightening up. This can cause the tension that we are talking about here, and it can also lead to soreness, pain, and tension headaches. If you have muscle tension that seems to be associated with stress, then you need to take steps to manage your stress. Stress management can be a broad approach to limit and reduce the amount of stress in your life, but it can also take the form of relaxation techniques that are designed to reduce stress in the moment. One of the first things to do if you are trying to manage your stress is to actively take control of your life. Make a schedule for your daily tasks and your work; make sure to include time for yourself and exercise in that schedule. If you are looking for things that you can do in the moment to relieve stress, you can try things like controlled breathing, meditation, stretching exercises, or you could go with something

as simple as sitting down to take a break. During this break it is important to let your mind rest from thinking about things that worry you. Acupuncture Acupuncture is an alternative form of treatment but it has shown to be effective for things like pain and muscle tension. In fact, one randomized study published in the British Medical Journal came to the conclusion that acupuncture can actually do more to relieve pain and tension in the neck than conventional massage. The process of applying acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into different trigger points. When the trigger point is stimulated, it can create a healing response and it can also stimulate the nervous system in a way that relieves pain. Acupuncture is an effective way to relax muscles and it offers a great alternative for people who deal with chronic muscle tension. Acupuncture can be used in combination with other treatment options like massage, and you can even supplement it with something like cupping. If you are concerned about the needles, you could also try acupressure as an alternative. Acupressure works on the same principles as acupuncture, but instead of inserting needles, the practitioner applies pressure to the trigger points. Rest Activity and exercise can be important steps toward preventing muscle tension, but you also have to make sure you get enough rest. Some people overdo it at work, others might go to the gym and push their bodies to extremes. Either way you look at it, muscle tension can come from working yourself too hard and not providing the muscles with the rest that they need. If you work a physical job, then muscle tension could be one of the side effects. Having a strong work ethic is not a bad thing, but you have to listen to your body. If you are working long days, you need to take breaks from the activity. When you have a day off, you should try to spend much of it relaxing. As for exercise, you want to make sure to keep it reasonable, and this is especially true if you have a busy work schedule on top of the exercise. You have to know your limits and avoid pushing your body to extremes. When you are done working out, give your muscles time to rest and heal. You can only push your body for so long before it catches up to you. Ergonomics and Posture Muscle tension can also be caused by poor posture or using poor ergonomics when you perform various tasks. Poor posture places unnecessary stress on the muscles of the back, leading to muscle tension. If you are looking to correct your posture, you need to evaluate
the way that you position your back when you engage in different activities. Do you slouch when you sit or stand? Do you hold your mobile phone low when you are texting? Do you have a tendency to lean to one side when you stand. All of these things cause posture problems. When it comes to correcting ergonomics, the process to fix the issue is similar. If you sit at a desk, you want to consider whether your chair provides adequate support. You also want to look at how things are positioned around the desk. Are you forced to hunch your shoulders to read the computer screen? Do you have to reach out to use your keyboard or mouse? To correct posture and ergonomics, you have to look at a lot of different things, and it can be hard for a person to correct on their own. To get the help you need, you may need to talk to a chiropractor or a physical therapist. You can also find some really neat apps for your phone or device that will evaluate your posture, give you tips, and even track your progress. Sleep Muscle tension can lead to problems when it comes to falling asleep, as well as staying asleep through the night. Many people who evaluate their sleeping habits and take steps to correct any issues notice fewer problems with muscle tension. The first thing to understand about muscle tension and sleep is that getting a good night’s rest is important for the health of your muscles. Your muscles get some of the best rest that they can during sleep, so if you are not getting the sleep that you need, you will be more likely to experience problems with pain and tension. As an additional point, your sleeping position could be putting stress on your muscles, which could contribute to your problems with tension. There could also be an issue with your mattress. Is it too firm or too soft? How are your pillows positioned when you are lying down? Do they put you in a position that stresses your muscles? When you lay in your sleeping position, it is important to consider whether any part of the body is lacking in support or if you feel pressure or tension in any of the muscles or joints. Hidden Influences in the Life of Paul and in Yours

The church had scarcely begun before it was challenged by its enemies. The closing verses of Acts 2 speak of the growth of the church and those who were being added to it every day. It would have been a remarkable time to have witnessed the enthusiasm of those early Christians. The opening verses of the next chapter tell of the results of Peter and John healing of the lame man at the temple. The city was amazed and “all the people ran together” (3:11) to the see these two apostles. Peter’s sermon that day changed those who assembled. Then, for the first time, opposition arose as the temple guards and the Sadducees came to arrest Peter and John and put them in custody. However, they could do no more than threaten them and release them “because of all the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done” (4:21). This opposition did not stop. The church continued to grow and multitudes from the cities surrounding Jerusalem were taught (5:17). The opposition became even greater and, the highest Jewish council, the Sanhedrin, brought greater punishment against the church. It imprisoned all the apostles. When Peter and the apostles addressed the council “. . . they were furious and plotted to kill them” (5:33). It is at this point we first meet Gamaliel who had great impact on the church. Gamaliel, a highly respected member of the Sanhedrin, addressed the council. He urged them to be cautious with these words of wisdom. “If this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it” (5:38-39). There is so much truth in what he said. What significance does all this have? Consider the fact that though Paul was born in the area we know as Turkey he was reared in Jerusalem and was taught by Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). Those who taught us have a tremendous impact on us throughout all of our lives. It is possibly, perhaps likely, that Paul heard these very words spoken by his teacher. Gamaliel was a Pharisee who taught strict allegiance to the law, and Paul became one who was “zealous toward God” (22:3). It is obvious that Gamaliel influenced Paul. Gamaliel said to the council, “Take heed to yourselves what you intend to do,” and Paul said to Timothy, “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine” (1 Tim. 4:16). Our lives, like Paul’s, are touched by all those around us. We are

Camp Fire / Baked Trout stuffed with fresh mint and onions
INGREDIENTS
INSTRUCTIONS

1. Rinse trout under cold, running water. Pat dry with paper towels. 2. Sprinkle salt inside trout, fill with orange slices and mint. Cover each fish with sliced onions. 3. Spray two large sheets of heavy duty foil with nonstick cooking spray. 4. Place one fish on each piece of foil. Bring long sides of foil together. Fold the two together by flat folding over and over until foil reaches the fish. Leave room for steam and expansion. 5. Bring short sides of foil together and fold to encase the fish on both sides. 6. Place foil packets, seam side down, directly on medium heat coals. Grill for 20-25 minutes until meat flakes easily. Turn once, carefully. 7. Open foil packages, throw away orange and mint (and skin the fish, if you want.). Serve hot.

Outside the Arena with...
Chad Berger By Georgia Akers
If you asked anyone who follows the sport what contractors they consider one of the best, they would probably mention two families: the Bergers and the Pages. If you want consistency in having great bulls that always perform it is from these two families. Chad Berger is probably more recognized due to his always being up on the concourse before an event at the Cooper Tire table. He will sign autographs, take pictures and visit with the fans. But there is so much more to this man. I have a few Chad stories I will share. I first had an opportunity to visit with him at an event where I was in the bar area with a few of the Rider Relief (now Western Sports Foundation) volunteers. Chad joined us. Then the Brazilians came in and two tables became one. He was gracious and fun to be with. Last year at the Finals, Cooper Tires had items for Chad to hand out. I stopped by to say hello and as I was leaving, he yelled at me to come back and he handed me a pair of bright orange socks with Chad Berger embroidered on them. Now I am partners with Cody Hebert. And I asked Chad what was he thinking. He got a small grin on his face and said “Put them on and casually lift your trouser leg.” I was laughing all the way back
to my seat. At the Western Sports Foundation first fashion show auction, things were going a little slow. All of a sudden, there was Chad up on his feet encouraging the bidding and getting the show going. Another time I was watching a young bull at auction and was next to Chad. I really liked the bloodlines on this bull. As we were watching the video, I asked him what he thought. His comment “he doesn’t move right”. This is why he has been 9-time stock contractor of the year. If the bull doesn’t move right, he will not be part of the bulls he brings. He sees things that most of us don’t. Tell us about yourself. My father Joe Berger stared buying bulls in the 1960s for my brother and I to get on for practice and then started his breeding program. I grew up around cattle and bulls my whole life and learned mostly everything about them from my dad. I started buying cattle out of high school and started my own family. Sarah and I have 3 kids that are all a part of our family business. What made you focus on PBR bucking bulls? When I decided to follow in my father’s footsteps, I knew that I wanted to haul, own, and raise PBR caliber bulls. I felt it was the elite level of bull riding and if I was going to be a part of it, I wanted to try and have and be the best.

What does it take to be 9-time stock contractor of the year? It takes a team! We work 12 months out of the year and around the clock to make this operation work. It takes a lot of determination, hard work, and good support. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without my family, employees, and partners! What do you look for in a partner? I look for someone who is passionate about the sport and really wants to enjoy being a part of it. You purchase a lot of bulls. How do you find them? I go to bull sales all over the country, I have people calling and emailing me a lot, and I am always watching bulls at every event, on social media, everywhere to see what is out there. On the average how many bulls do you bring to an event? I bring anywhere from 25-75 depending on the event. There are events I produce over the summer where I provide every single bull. How do you transport them coast to coast? The bulls are transported on a semi-truck by my guys, Delbert Nuse and Rex Meier. How many days a year are you on the road? I couldn’t tell you how many days a year and I travel every day for my day job, but I spend a lot of time on the road and nearly every single weekend. I have my guys that work for me that haul the bulls across the country so I can work every day! Who takes care of the ranch when you are traveling? I have full time hired men who take care of things at the ranches. We couldn’t do what we do without them and they keep the ship at sail. Juan Gonzalez and Denver Killingsworth are the guys running things while we are on the road. This is a family business. How does your family enter into it? Well, we each play a different role. My wife Sarah takes on the load of it. She’s busy holding down the fort, booking flights, making sure I am taken care of, and everything in between. She’s my teammate and partner in everything I do. My oldest daughter Lacey hauled bulls for me for a long time until she started her family. Now she works in my office and handles our cow operation. Her husband JR also helps a lot with the bulls and handles a lot of our rodeo end of the business. My son John has hauled and handled bulls for me for a long time as well. He works in Montana now, but when we need him to come help, he does. My youngest daughter Sadie does all of my social media,
marketing, merchandising, and sales. Where do you see the sport going? I see the sport continuing to grow and I am excited to see where it does go! How did you come to be sponsored by Cooper Tires? Dennis Davis Bucking Bulls is a unique operation in Orchard, Texas that began on January 1, 2019. Dennis Davis is a stock contractor with a twist. He only owns a handful of bucking bulls. “99.9% of the bulls I haul belong to others. I am on the training end only,” Dennis said. “I don’t put on any events, but I care for, house, train and haul bulls for a number of people who were bull riding fans but are now bull owners.” His program is patterned after the futurity blueprint pioneered by Billy Jaynes of Exclusive Genetics/ Bucking Bull Games and The Jaynes Gang. You may remember that Dennis worked for Billy Jaynes’ Exclusive Genetics/ Bucking Bull Games. “I started working with Billy and The Jaynes Gang in 2012,” Dennis revealed. “I trained and hauled the bulls to the events. When Billy became the CEO of Championship Bull Riding, I was named the President of Bucking Bull Games and the Jaynes Gang.”

the field, and the water on the other side. I tried several different blends of feed. Our feed mixture is basic, but it is16% protein. This helps keep their energy level up. We treat these bulls like the athletes they are.” “The bull’s digestive structure is different than humans,” Dennis observed. “But their intake and consequences are similar to humans. What they eat and how much they eat effects each bull differently, just like people. I monitor them daily and if a bull starts getting in bad shape, I’ll adjust his feed and exercise him like you would a horse in a pen.” “My program is very much like training racehorses,” Dennis continued. “The trainer is paid to house, feed and care for the horses. He monitors them, exercises them, and hauls them to an event. The owners have no hands-on interaction with their animal, but they do come and watch their horse race and collect the winnings!”

I furnish these and you pay the expenses for your bull. “Folks will contact me and let me know what class of bull they are interested in owning,” Dennis said. “The classes are yearling (one-year-old), futurity (two-year-old), derby (three-year-old), and classic (fouryear-old). They also let me know if they want rider bulls or bull teams.” “Once I know what the customer is looking for, I hook them up with the breeder contacts I have for whatever class they have chosen. I either connect them with a breeder directly or do the transaction for them. Once they have purchased a bucking bull and it is here, the owner pays a monthly fee for me to take care of
Dennis currently leases the Exclusive Genetics ranch in Orchard, Texas. “Right now, I have 35 bulls in my program,” Dennis shared. “That number will grow to about 75 as the season progresses and our customers acquire more juvenile bulls (formerly called yearling bulls by the ABBI).” “The training I provide is similar to an athletic trainer for a team,” Dennis explained. “I don’t teach a bull to buck. I monitor their athletic ability and their maturity. I buck them, do chute work with a dummy, and keep them in shape. They get exercise every day where they graze. We put the food on one side of

The standard contract calls for the owner to pay us $400.00 per month and we retain 20% of whatever the bull earns.” “There are different events for the different classes and levels of bulls,” Dennis divulged. “If a customer has an outstanding bucking bull, there are events that have open formats and the bulls can win some big money. Lower priced bulls can compete in 4-D events, which gives the bulls four chances to win money. I’m on the road 48 weekends out of the year. We have all class of bulls, and I have an event somewhere every weekend.” When I talked to Dennis, he was in San Antonio for the NCBA (National Cattlemen’s Beef Association) Convention and Trade Show. His bulls were going to buck at a special event held during the intermission of the PBR Touring Pro event. “This crowd is cattle people from all over the nation,” Dennis said. “They really enjoy this!” “Last week our bull teams won first and fourth place at the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event in Knoxville, Tennessee,” Dennis disclosed. “The week before that our bull teams won first and third place at the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event in Lexington, Kentucky.” I asked Dennis if he had a favorite bull right now. “Not really,” he answered. “I treat them all pretty much the same. But I am working with a four-year-old bull named Lockdown that is showing real promise to be an outstanding bucking bull. He is owned by Cleve

By Terry Blake Photos by Phillip Kitts / Avid Visual Imagery The 2020 edition of the PBR Global Cup has come and gone but it was full of highs and lows as some of the world’s best bull riders donned the jersey of his home country. Each team was comprised of six riders who had the opportunity to ride one bull in the long round. Each team then had two bonus round bulls where the coach was able to draft a bull and which of his riders would compete against that animal. This format was played out in Round 1 on Saturday night and again in Round 2 on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. As the first day came to a close, Team USA Eagles lead the field by one bull with four qualified rides and a total of 346.75 points. Team Canada was in hot pursuit with three qualified rides and 259.75 points. Team Australia was third with two scores and 169.75 points. Somewhat surprising was the fact that three teams, including the reigning Global Cup Champions – Team Brazil, Team Mexico, and Team USA Wolves only posted one qualified ride. As Round 2 began, eight second rides did not come easy for most of the teams. Team Australia, however, came out firing on all cylinders and quickly fought their way to the top of the
leaderboard after riding four out of six bulls. After the strong start by the Aussies, it seemed like it was nip and tuck all afternoon between Team USA Eagles and Team Australia. As the long round came down to the final rider for each team, the Australians were in the lead by one bull with six rides and 514.5 points while the Americans had five rides and 435.5 points. With the final ride in the long round, the Eagles’ Cole Melancon showed up and showed off. He covered Monkey (Cooper / Scruggs Bucking Bulls) for 88.25 points. This gave the Eagles a slim 9.25-point margin which would not be relinquished. The final two bonus rounds were dominated by the bull power as there was only one qualified ride out of twelve attempts. Jose Vitor Leme scored one more for Team Brazil with 89.5 points on Jive Turkey (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/ Clay Struve/ MAGA Cattle/ Roper Angus). The Global Cup is a fabulous way to enjoy bull riding while also combining the pride one has in his or her own country. What better way to celebrate the international appeal of the world’s greatest sport.

It would make sense if, before the Iron Cowboy, PBR fans did not know much about Cole Melancon, or even know who he was at all. Prior to the major event at Staples Center, he rode in a handful of Velocity and Touring Pro events. He is much more well known in the PRCA, twice qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo. But now all that has changed, and Cole is happy with his decision to ride in Iron Cowboy, a choice that he was on the fence about. “I got invited to ride in the Velocity Finals in 2017 for winning the College Finals, and I did go to that. I also got invited to the Global Cup. I grew up with Cooper Davis and Cody Teel; we’re all from the same area. Cooper told Justin (McBride) about me, and Justin told him that if I wanted to come, I could. I had about a 24-hour notice on that before I had to jump on a plane. “Those were the only PBR events I went to until this year. Up until then I didn’t really have any more thoughts about coming over to the PBR; I was just going to continue to rodeo. But in December I went to my first Velocity event, then went to about three others, and did well enough to get to come to L.A.” Melancon told us that now that he has a family, he had to make a business decision. He would like to continue riding in the PRCA and try to qualify for the NFR this year, as well as riding in the PBR. As for the $100,000 he won, he intends to pay off some bills, and perhaps invest a bit of it also. “The money’s really good at the PBR, and when the man invites you, it’s hard to turn it down and not come. And now being sixth in the World Standings, it’s a big change overnight. I get to go back to Arlington this weekend for the Global Cup to represent Team USA again, so I’m pretty excited about that, and excited to have that opportunity again.” When Cole was young, his family was into rodeo a bit, but they were team ropers. Melancon became the standout, because even though he also enjoyed roping, he knew at an early age that he wanted to ride bulls. That was his interest when he went to the rodeos with his family, and he admitted to watching the movie 8 Seconds many, many times.

“My dad started letting me get on some sheep, then some calves, and it just went from there. I qualified for the Texas State High School Finals Rodeo four years, and rode bulls in college from 2016 and 2017. That was at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas, rodeoing for Coach Paul Brown. I made the College Finals both years, and as I said earlier, ended up winning them the second year, 2017.”

Interestingly, it was an unfortunate injury to Ryan Dirteater that opened the door for Melancon to get the opportunity to ride in the fourth round of Iron Cowboy, leading to that major victory. But he, like all bull riders, has been snake-bit himself. In July of last year at a rodeo in Salinas, as Cole looked to be on track to qualify for his third NFR, he suffered a collapsed left lung and three broken ribs, putting a stop to his run for those Finals. He was in 13th place at the time of the injury, and finished 18th in the standings; close, but no cigar. When asked what bull he would most like to get on, his answer was the same as many other riders; SweetPro’s Bruiser. But unlike a lot of his peers, he has already been on Bruiser three times.
“I’m going to juggle both of those organizations and just see what happens towards the end of the year,” he told us. “I dang sure want to try to make the NFR again. I’m not going to give up on rodeos this year. I’ve already started it, and I’m doing fairly decent in the standings. “I know it’s early, but whenever I’m not at a PBR I’ll be rodeoing. Come summer on the PBR break, I just won’t take one, I’ll keep rodeoing and keep going.” Cole is talented and determined, and Humps N’ Horns Bull Riding Magazine wants to congratulate him, welcome him to the PBR, and wish him good luck in the future.
“I rode him twice, and got bucked off the other time. the first time I rode him was in Vernal, Utah. I was 92.5 on him and won the rodeo. The second time was in Caldwell, Idaho, where I rode him for 90 points and I ended up winning second. I drew him again at the NFR in 2018 and he bucked me off right at the whistle. I’d like to get on him again, especially in the Short Round at one of these PBRs.” Cole is not one to sit around and when he has any off time, he tends to keep busy outside. He likes spending time with his family, and working around his ranch. They have a few horses there that always need tending to. He does some day work as well; whatever anybody needs to have done he is right there. But with his intent to now ride at both the PBR and PRCA events the rest of the season, keeping busy might not be that much of a problem.

Melancon Reigned Supreme to Become This Year’s Iron Cowboy For the second year in a row, the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA was the site of Iron Cowboy, and what a great event this was. It took place over the course of two nights. The fans were amazing, and there were good crowds for both performances. But it was not only the fans who were great; both the bull riders and their bovine partners also shined under the lights of L.A.
Right behind Jesus with a score of 88.25 was Eduardo Aparecido. He mastered Money, owned by Culp Bucking Bulls/Zapata/Mendes. In third place was Matt Triplett, while Brock Radford and Luciano de Castro split fourth and fifth. Since the rules state that there will be 25 moving into the second round, 10 others joined those 15 original qualifiers,
When the dust cleared, the one who sparkled the brightest was Cole Melancon. He survived five tough rounds to be crowned the 2020 PBR Iron Cowboy! He took home a cool $100,000 check and a custom belt buckle. To add even more icing to this cake, he became only the second rookie to ever win a PBR Major. This was his first Unleash The Beast tour win, and with that victory Cole moved up into sixth place in the World Standings! The first night there were 40 cowboys who tried their hand at riding their bulls with the hopes of moving on to the second round. Only 15 men were successful in that quest, and the best of those was young Cody Jesus. He covered the Dakota Rodeo/ Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger bull Gambini for a score of 88.5. Round 2 saw ‘The Cherokee Kid’ Ryan Dirteater post the highest score of the entire event; a huge 92.75 on the Hart Cattle/GT Bucking Bull charge, Smooth Over. This was a fabulous ride by Ryan, and much appreciated by the fans in attendance. But Joao Ricardo Vieira was not to be ignored in this second round. He scored a 90.25 on M.A.G.A., owned by TNT Bucking Bulls/Hart Cattle Co. to be second. Melancon was third, Triplett fourth, and two-time World Champ Jess Lockwood split fifth and sixth with Ramon de Lima. The 15 was pared down to eight for the third round. Only three men were able to make the whistle, with Lockwood being the most successful of the three. He scored an 87.5 with the Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Ken Barnhard bull Fist City. Triplett continued showing his consistency by covering
Budakon, owned by Hart Cattle Co./Hale. He was given a score of 87 for his efforts. The final man to ride was JR. He received an 86.5 when he got the eight on War Cry, a bull from Julio Moreno/Dallas Schott. Time for Round 4, and there were four men slated to ride; Melancon, Lockwood, JR, and Triplett. Important to note here that Dirteater was supposed to ride in this penultimate round, but in the third round he was slammed down hard courtesy of Mason’s Missouri Gold and was unable to compete any longer. Enter Cole, Ryan’s replacement. To say he made the most of this opportunity is an understatement. Of the four, he was the only one to ride. Had he bucked off, all four would have had to ride again, but he made sure that would not be the case. He scored an 89.75 on the Julio Moreno/Dallas Schott bull Spotted Demon. The man he would go up against in the fifth and final round? None other than the three-time Iron Cowboy Champion, Vieira. Their total scores moving into that last round had Cole with 263 and JR with 261, and to put it simply, the highest score would win.

As the drama built to a crescendo, Melancon bucked off at a heartbreaking 7.43 seconds. It was all up to Vieira. If he rode, he would win his fourth Iron Cowboy title. But it was not to be, as the new kid on the PBR block ran off with the coveted Iron Cowboy championship. After his win, Cole admitted that he was tired after getting on four bulls back to back. “It takes a lot out of you, but we train every day for opportunities like this. This win ranks at the top of my victories. I grew up watching these events. It’s unfortunate that Ryan got hurt. I had Spotted Demon, and for some time, I didn’t want to get on him. PAYTON NELSON CLAIMS THE WIN AT 20th ANNIVERSARY LFC VERNAL, Utah – The Lane Frost Challenge produced a historic 20th year anniversary event. As expert pyrotechnics lit up the arena, fifty of bull riding’s toughest riders looked on with anticipation. This was their chance to prove they had what it takes to win the coveted Lane Frost Challenge title. In the end, Utah natives reclaimed the podium, with Payton Nelson coming out the victor. Payton Nelson is no stranger to the Lane Frost Challenge. Nelson started the weekend with a score of 70.5. He was offered a re-ride Friday night, but declined. This talented rider went on to score an 80.5 and an 83-point ride on Rockin’ B All In

Pro Rodeo’s bull, Rambo in the short round, bringing his final score to 234 points. When asked what advice he would give to new riders Nelson said, “Don’t get discouraged. Try hard. Keep going when it gets bad, no matter what, because it will pay off, if you work hard. Hard work will beat talent when talent is not willing to work.” Following his own advice, Nelson solidified his place as our 2020 LFC champion, taking home a hefty winning of $6,000. Second place winner, Hayes Weight, is a long-time competitor at the LFC, having been our 2018 LFC Champion in Mona, Utah. After riding three bulls over the weekend competition Hayes gained a total score of 223.5 points. Weight went home with a check for $4,000 and offered this advice to those hoping to make it to the LFC podium, “Just have fun. Don’t let that stress get to you. Just take it one bull at a time. They say that bull riding is 90% mental and 10% physical and I believe it.” Adam Lucero, rounded out the winner’s podium. Coming in at third place, newcomer to the LFC, Lucero rode two out of his three bulls and claimed the highest point ride of the weekend, with an extraordinary score of 92. Lucero started his weekend strong by earning the chance to test his grit on the bounty bull, Rockin’ B All In Pro Rodeo’s, Harper’s Pet. Lucero dominated Harper’s Pet and had the fortune to draw the same bull in the short round, which increased his total earnings to $4,000. When asked if Lucero would come back and compete again in the LFC he enthusiastically said, “I will dang sure be back!” As the dust settles over the empty arena the LFC staff has

National Professional Bull Riders Association News The National Professional Bull Riders would like to thank the bull riders, all the personnel and the spectators for making the Mercedes 2020 event a successful one. It was action packed, fun and the fans enjoyed every minute. Not only did they get to see veteran bull riders but also the up and coming talent that is traveling up and down the roads. Over the last 20 years, the NPBR has had the pleasure of providing a professional atmosphere to many bull riders. Whether they are World Champions or bull riders building their careers, they know to expect a quality production, professional contract personnel and an even set of world class bucking bulls. Kyle McDaniel from Fort Worth, TX came to Mercedes number one in the standings with several trailing close behind. He was able to put some cash in his pocket therefore separating him

from the pack and was able to maintain that lead. We presented Kyle with the 2019 World Champion Monsoon Silver Trophy Buckle. He is one of the young bull riders that is making a name for himself. Keep an eye out, you will be seeing Kyle on the road to a great career. The 2019 Finals Monsoon Silver Champion Buckle was presented to veteran bull rider, Shane Semien from Beaumont, TX. Shane is the 2018 NPBR World Champion and even due to a 2019 injury, was able to come back and put two eight second rides together making him the Finals high money winner from the 2019 standings. Shane is a long time NPBR member and has won events and championship titles during this time. And then there was a new NPBR member, Jaron Hughes from Canton, TX. Jaron is a 2019 LRCA Year End Champion & Rookie of the Year along with 2019 UPRA Rookie of the Year. Jaron made his way to Mercedes, put two solid eight second rides together and was the high money winner for the 2020 Mercedes event. Jaron was presented the Mercedes Monsoon Silver Tour buckle.

Western Wanderings SPURS I love to hear the jingle, jangle rhythm of my spurs when I walk! But when I strut, my jingle bobs sing, and it causes folks to talk When you call yourself cowboy, live out west and ride a horse all day You wear a hat, boots, chaps and spurs, it’s just the cowboy way A cowboy struttin’ spurs down the street still causes some folks to gawk But I love to hear the jingle, jangle, rhythm of my spurs when I walk! I wear em to ride, I wear em to eat, I wear em most all day long Them spurs are just a part of me, not wearin’ them would be wrong There is a time, however, when my spurs might not belong… My Pa, he always told me, “Son, don’t squat with yer spurs on!” I’m a bowlegged cowboy with swagger, but I hope I’m no laughingstock Cause I love to hear the jingle, jangle, rhythm of my spurs when I walk!
