Welcome to Summer! Although the calendar still does not show that it is offically summer, the thermometer is unofficially saying that it is summer. As a child, I always looked forward to summer since it brought a reprieve from schoolwork but there were also a lot of fun times and good memories of days spent playing outside with friends, going fishing with my grandparents, family reunions at the lake, and so much more. Today, summers are still fun, even though there is no extended break from work. There are a lot of opportunities to make some great memories with your family. If your family is like ours, a lot of those activities revolve around some sort of rodeo or bull riding event but that’s okay. I would like to encourage you to be sure to make time to spend with those you love before it’s too late and the opportunity is gone.

I’m excited to introduce you to the Kueckelhan family this month. They have been producing a rodeo on their ranch in Fannin County, Texas for over 60 years. Talk about some great memories! We also have some great articles about a couple veterans of the sport. Shane Proctor and Jack Daniels After Party have both been stalwarts of bull riding for several years. After Party has taken many a cowboy to the pay window for a longer time frame than usual for most bulls. He will receive a well-deserved retirement following the end of this season. On the other end of the spectrum, there is a young man named Koal Livingston who has made his way to the PBR Built Ford Tough Series and is looking to make a name for himself. We also have a new feature this month. One of the best things of owning a magazine is all the interesting people that we get to talk to on the phone and to meet out on the road. What about the kids who ride? When talking about the best way to train up young bull riders another awesome comment I get is “well, what about the kids who can really ride?”. Really, is that even an issue? The kids who can really ride are the minority and will ride the appropriate animals and, even though they give the little buckers a run for their money, they can still benefit from the animals that fit the majority of the kids if they’ll use those kind to hone their skills. Why would a parent ever be angry or offended because there is no chance that their kid will get bucked off. There will be plenty of opportunity for that when they are forced to be real bull riders. Easy ones will allow skills to be built and confidence in the better riders while they will do the same for the less experienced and/or less skilled riders.

How about we not worry so much about the kids who already ride good and make them hang back just a bit for the whole of the sport. Really, what’s the big hurry? There really is no hurry, they’ll have plenty of time. The talent they have isn’t going to disappear by holding off a little while. As a matter of fact, they’ll get better by maturing while completely dominating and at the next level they will be that much better. Cody Custer

Even if a kid is some sort of prodigy or phenom, he had better have someone looking out for him and give him a chance to be healthy by the time he is old enough to ride for something that really counts. Even the best of the best must work hard and stay humble enough to use those bulls that don’t stand a chance of bucking them off to stay sharp on his fundamentals or he’ll get bypassed by the kids with less natural ability who develop a stronger work ethic. If they get “too good” to work hard, bull riding sure has it’s a way of bringing them back to earth, “in more than one way”.

Muscle tension is a very common problem and it can affect people of all ages, especially adults. When we talk about muscle tension, what we mean is a feeling of tightness or pressure in a specific muscle or muscle group. While someone might only experience muscle tension, often times pain, soreness, and a restricted range of motion accompany it.

Active Lifestyle

Any muscle in the body can experience this feeling of tension, but it is most common in the muscles of the back, neck, and shoulders. For many people, persistent tension in the muscles of the upper back, neck or shoulders also causes intense headaches.

The best way to prevent this is with regular exercise. If you stay active and condition your muscles for activity, then they are less likely to develop tension after a day of hard work or sport. You don’t even need to make the exercise intense. In fact, pushing yourself too hard is another way to trigger muscle tension.

Muscle tension can be caused by a number of different factors including: • Anxiety and stress • Poor diet • Lack of exercise • Certain illnesses like a flu or cold Since it is not a specific malady or injury, muscle tension can be difficult for a doctor to diagnose and treat. When you tell a doctor that your muscles feel tense, it does not really tell them that much about the problem. Treatment for muscle tension usually requires a broad approach. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. A doctor may recommend a number of things, which may include trying various prescription drugs. You may have to try a few different things before finding what works best.

Muscle tension is often a sign that your muscles are not conditioned for an activity that you have engaged in. For example, if you do not exercise regularly, suddenly deciding to go out and play basketball or helping a friend move furniture, may result in muscle tension.

If you experience muscle tension from other causes, exercise is good for you too. Movement provides relief for muscles that are already tense. Regular exercise promotes healthy muscles, and healthy muscles are less likely to experience tension. You should try exercises that strengthen and stretch the muscles that are affected by tension; this will help loosen up them up. When muscles are really tense, it may be difficult to get up and move. In times like this, you can remain sitting and stretch the muscle and move the associated joint until you feel loosened up enough to get up. Massage

While there might not be a single approach that will work for everybody, there are things that can help. In this article, we look at some of the best natural methods to relieve muscle tension and to prevent it from occurring in the first place.

When there is a problem with your muscles, massage is one of the best options for relief, especially during an intense bout of tension. Massage relaxes the muscles and relieves tension, and it is also good for pain and soreness.

Massage relaxes the stressed muscles. In addition to that, it increases circulation in tight muscles, which promotes healing. Often, it triggers the pain relief response from the brain, causing it to release natural chemicals that reduce pain and tension. Certified massage therapists have experience and training when it comes to working on muscle tension. They will be able to identify the different areas of your body that need work. However, a massage from a friend or your spouse could also work well. Even massaging your own muscles during moments of tension can help. Heat Therapy Heat therapy is by no means a new treatment for muscle tension; people have been using heat to relax their muscles for centuries, and it is still one of the most effective ways to find relief. The idea behind heat therapy is that the heat works to loosen up the muscle fibers, and by doing so, relieves the tension from the muscles. A person can enjoy heat therapy in a number of different ways. One option is dry heat, like an electric heating pad. Some people may prefer moist heat, which can be applied by making a heated compress. Taking a hot bath or shower is also a good method for relief. Beyond just loosening up the muscles and relieving the tension, heat benefits the muscles by promoting circulation in the area. When heat is applied, the capillaries open, allowing more blood to flow to the area. If the muscles are injured, heat is a good way to stimulate a healing response.

For a person who has problems with muscle tension, keeping an effective topical pain reliever on hand can work wonders during intense bouts of muscle tension. When you are experiencing the tension and soreness, just rub some of the pain relief lotion into the muscle, and it should offer a quick form of relief. As an additional way to use these products, you can have a person massage them into the muscle when you are feeling tension in the muscles. Diet and Supplements Nutrition is the foundation of a healthy body, and for many people that experience muscle tension, their diet is the root cause of the problem. When it comes to nutrition and muscle tension, there could be a number of different issues. If you have problems with muscle tension, you may need to pay attention to your levels of vitamin D, magnesium and calcium. Vitamin D is important for maintaining healthy muscles. Muscle pain and tension are often associated with a vitamin D deficiency. The best way to get vitamin D is to spend time in the sun, but this may not always be practical. Unfortunately, there are not many foods that are a natural good source of vitamin D, so it can help to take a supplement or to look for foods that have been fortified with vitamin D. Magnesium is another mineral that promotes healthy muscles, and it also plays an important role in muscle contraction. Nuts and seeds can be a great source of magnesium, and you also have options like whole grains, peas, soy and fish. You can also apply magnesium oil topically. It can absorb through the skin and be used by the body.

When we talk about heat therapy, people often address the possibility of using cold compresses to alternate with the heat. However, when it comes to muscle tension, cold can make the issues worse since the bodyâ€™s natural response to cold is to tense up. For many individuals, applying cold to a tense muscle may actually aggravate the situation.

While calcium is most commonly associated with healthy bones, it also plays an important role in the healthy function of muscles. If you are looking to add calcium to your diet, you can increase your intake of milk and other dairy products. If you find that you are still calcium deficient even with a healthy intake of dietary calcium, then you may need to consider taking a supplement.

Topical Pain Relievers

If you frequently experience muscle tension, you also have a variety of different topical pain relievers that can be good for providing quick relief. When we talk about topical pain relievers, we are talking about the gels and creams that you rub directly on sore joints and muscles.

Psychological triggers like anxiety and stress are some of the most common causes of muscle tension. When a person starts to feel anxious or over-stressed, the muscles can react by tightening up. This can cause the tension that we are talking about here, and it can also lead to soreness, pain, and tension headaches.

A topical pain reliever can work in a number of ways to treat muscle tension. To start, most of these products create a feeling of heat in the area where they are applied. This sensation can help to distract the mind from pain, and cause the brain to release natural chemicals that trigger a healing response. As an additional point, the sensation created by these creams also promotes blood flow much in the same way that heat therapy does.

If you have muscle tension that seems to be associated with stress, then you need to take steps to manage your stress. Stress management can be a broad approach to limit and reduce the amount of stress in your life, but it can also take the form of relaxation techniques that are designed to reduce stress in the moment. One of the first things to do if you are trying to manage your stress is to actively take control of your life. Make a schedule for your daily

tasks and your work; make sure to include time for yourself and exercise in that schedule. If you are looking for things that you can do in the moment to relieve stress, you can try things like controlled breathing, meditation, stretching exercises, or you could go with something as simple as sitting down to take a break. During this break it is important to let your mind rest from thinking about things that worry you. Acupuncture Acupuncture is an alternative form of treatment but it has shown to be effective for things like pain and muscle tension. In fact, one randomized study published in the British Medical Journal came to the conclusion that acupuncture can actually do more to relieve pain and tension in the neck than conventional massage. The process of applying acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into different trigger points. When the trigger point is stimulated, it can create a healing response and it can also stimulate the nervous system in a way that relieves pain. Acupuncture is an effective way to relax muscles and it offers a great alternative for people who deal with chronic muscle tension. Acupuncture can be used in combination with other treatment options like massage, and you can even supplement it with something like cupping. If you are concerned about the needles, you could also try acupressure as an alternative. Acupressure works on the same principles as acupuncture, but instead of inserting needles, the practitioner applies pressure to the trigger points. Rest Activity and exercise can be important steps toward preventing muscle tension, but you also have to make sure you get enough rest. Some people overdo it at work, others might go to the gym and push their bodies to extremes. Either way you look at it, muscle tension can come from working yourself too hard and not providing the muscles with the rest that they need. If you work a physical job, then muscle tension could be one of the side effects. Having a strong work ethic is not a bad thing, but you have to listen to your body. If you are working long days, you need to take breaks from the activity. When you have a day off, you should try to spend much of it relaxing. As for exercise, you want to make sure to keep it reasonable, and this is especially true if you have a busy work schedule on top of the exercise. You have to know your limits and avoid pushing your body to extremes.

When you are done working out, give your muscles time to rest and heal. You can only push your body for so long before it catches up to you. Ergonomics and Posture Muscle tension can also be caused by poor posture or using poor ergonomics when you perform various tasks. Poor posture places unnecessary stress on the muscles of the back, leading to muscle tension. If you are looking to correct your posture, you need to evaluate the way that you position your back when you engage in different activities. Do you slouch when you sit or stand? Do you hold your mobile phone low when you are texting? Do you have a tendency to lean to one side when you stand. All of these things cause posture problems. When it comes to correcting ergonomics, the process to fix the issue is similar. If you sit at a desk, you want to consider whether your chair provides adequate support. You also want to look at how things are positioned around the desk. Are you forced to hunch your shoulders to read the computer screen? Do you have to reach out to use your keyboard or mouse? To correct posture and ergonomics, you have to look at a lot of different things, and it can be hard for a person to correct on their own. To get the help you need, you may need to talk to a chiropractor or a physical therapist. You can also find some really neat apps for your phone or device that will evaluate your posture, give you tips, and even track your progress. Sleep Muscle tension can lead to problems when it comes to falling asleep, as well as staying asleep through the night. Many people who evaluate their sleeping habits and take steps to correct any issues notice fewer problems with muscle tension. The first thing to understand about muscle tension and sleep is that getting a good night’s rest is important for the health of your muscles. Your muscles get some of the best rest that they can during sleep, so if you are not getting the sleep that you need, you will be more likely to experience problems with pain and tension. As an additional point, your sleeping position could be putting stress on your muscles, which could contribute to your problems with tension. There could also be an issue with your mattress. Is it too firm or too soft? How are your pillows positioned when you are lying down? Do they put you in a position that stresses your muscles? When you lay in your sleeping position, it is important to consider whether any part of the body is lacking in support or if you feel pressure or tension in any of the muscles or joints.

People should cease trying to make the Bible more palatable to the masses. Either accept what it says and live by it or reject it. Don’t say you accept it and then twist it to fit what you think you really can accept. In the end, you will only make God out to be a liar and yourself a fool. God did destroy the earth by flood and He does plan to destroy the earth by fire. Let’s not twist it to be more acceptable. Let’s accept it and live it. What Kind of Flood?

We here in Oklahoma, along with much of the nation, have had a tremendous amount of rain in the past month. Some areas have seen record flooding as we saw relentless, heavy rains over the course of many days. All of this water reminded me of an article I read by Edwin L. Crozier, via Gospel Power, Vol. 15, No. 1, Jan. 6, 2008. I have heard Bible believers debate the flood. I use the term “Bible believers” loosely here, because some of these so-called believers can’t seem to accept the Bible for what it says. Genesis 6:17 says, “I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die” (ESV). That is plain. God said He would flood the earth and destroy all living things on it. That, however, is not palatable to some. Perhaps they can’t believe God would actually do it. Perhaps they can’t believe such a feat is possible in the natural world. Perhaps they believe there is not enough “scientific” evidence for it. They want to make the Bible digestible for the masses, so they say, “It was a local flood around the Black Sea.” These believe they are performing a noble task. More people will accept the Bible if they think the flood was local instead of a cataclysimic world event. Thus, they think they are being evangelistic, performing God a service by clearing up this difficulty. On the surface, I appreciate that these are trying to help people believe the Bible. However, when I scratch beneath the surface, I wish they would stop their incessant and inane babbling. They are not helping God’s cause or the Bible. Instead, they are making the Bible out to be nothing but lies and contradictions. Who can believe the Bible if their assertions are correct? Aside from not taking the Bible at its word, these “thinkers” have produced a lie in the Bible. If Genesis 6:17 was hyperbole to show how awful the sin was and how serious God’s judgment was, then Genesis 9:11ff is the same exaggeration. God’s point in Genesis 9 is He will never again do what He did in Noah’s day. He set the rainbow in the sky as a reminder of His covenant. Every time we see a rainbow we can remember God’s power in the destructive flood and His promise not to do it again. Further, we can remember He has promised to destroy the world with fire (II Peter 3:8-13). But not if these so-called believers are correct. If they are correct, every time we see a rainbow, we are reminded God lies. If this was about local floods, God lied. I have one word here -- Katrina.

Cowboy Macaroni Casserole Cook Time - 50 mins

Ingredients

• Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. • Prepare the macaroni and cheese according to the directions on the package. • Brown the ground beef and onion in a skillet over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink. Drain excess grease. • In a 2 quart casserole dish, combine the macaroni and cheese, ground beef, onion, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and corn with its liquid. Mix well. • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until heated through. • Top with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo

Every year during the last weekend in July, just off Highway 78, a community gathers in northern Fannin County, Texas just a stone’s throw away from the Red River for the annual Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo. This is a family tradition that has been carried on for almost 62 years and is one of the few rodeos that is produced by one family and not a professional association nor a local civic organization. The rodeo had a very humble origin back in 1956 when a young twenty year old cowboy named Haynes Kueckelhan hatched the idea for a rodeo in his hometown as a place for him and his friends to practice and have fun competing against one another. Haynes was an all-around hand who always had an interest in rodeo and worked in the roping, steer wrestling, and bareback riding events.

The Kueckelhan family has continued to improve the facilities over the years and now have a nice permanent, all metal arena complete with bucking chutes, roping box, back pens, and bleachers that will seat about 5,000 people. Haynes was known as a solid Christian man who loved his family, his church, and the rodeo which had become his baby, essentially like his third child. He was actively involved in several rodeo organizations and was one of the first board members elected to the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) when it was formed and was also a founding member of the Cowboys Regional Rodeo Association (CRRA) and went on to serve as the president of this seven state association. Haynes remained the backbone of the Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo until he passed away in 2013, only five days before the rodeo that year.

Haynes, with the help of his father, Howard, produced the first rodeo in an arena made out of hog wire with only two bucking chutes. The Kueckelhans’ success can be attributed to a number of factors which include a large number of family involvement, the tremendous support of both national and local sponsors such as Ram Rodeo, Boot Barn, Priefert, and Bonham Chrysler. There has also been a willingness to change and adapt to the times for the Kueckelhan rodeo and not get attached to something that may not be working as well as it once did. When Marty was a young boy, about 6-7 years old, his father set him and his cousin up with some miniature chariot races around the arena by tying some small chariots to the back of some of the roping calves. One of the most popular recent additions to the rodeo lineup is the wild cow milking which is sure to provide plenty of thrills and spills! Throughout the history of the rodeo, there have been a great list of entertainers who performed at the rodeo such as Freddy Fender, Moe Bandy, Joe Stampley, Sylvia, and John Anderson to name few. There has also been no shortage of top notch contestants to compete in the rodeo each year. Some of the more well-known contestants have included Lane Frost, who was also Marty’s team roping partner in the Oklahoma Youth Rodeo Association, Jim Sharp, NFR bareback rider Clint Cannon, Joe Beaver, Fred Whitfield, Justin Maas, Britt Bockius, NFR steer wrestler Sean Mulligan, and the dynamic bullfighting duo known as Donny and Ronny Sparks. Although variety is the spice of life, as they say, there is also something to be said for maintaining consistency. The Kueckelhans have managed to use both attributes to their advantage. In the 61 year history of the rodeo, there have only been two stock contractors. The first was Roland Reid and the Double R Rodeo while the second one, who has been there for the past forty plus years, is Gerald Smith and the Wing Rodeo Co. Smith’s granddaughter, Jesi and her husband Tad Beck own Rocking I Rodeo Co. and are well known

Haynes Kueckelhan stock contractors within the PBR. Tad serves as the arena director for the Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo and does an outstanding job to keep the performances running smoothly and moving at a good pace while entertaining for the fans. The Kueckelhans have also been blessed to have Anthony Lucia, an accomplished rodeo announcer who has worked at some of the most prestigious rodeos in the country, serve as the announcer for the past few years. According to Lucia, this is one of his favorite rodeos all year long. Another steady factor for the rodeo is the top notch entertainment and specialty acts. In 2016, the Kueckelhans invited Lecile Harris who was inducted into the Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame back in 2007 and, at a cool 80 years young, kept the fans laughing during all three performances. During the remainder of the year, when not planning the next year’s rodeo, the primary business of the Kueckelhan Ranch is too raise and lease timed event cattle for a large number of roping events and the livestock for many junior, high school, and traditional Mexican rodeos. Britches Rodeo Association Finals at the Lazy E Arena, World Junior Team Roping Championships, and the Barry Burke Championship Junior Roping Roundup. The Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo is the single largest event held in Fannin County each year. Although the largest town only has a population of about 8,000 people, the rodeo will attract audiences in excess of 20,000 people during its annual run. True to the heart of its founder, and the entire Kueckelhan Family, a major part of the rodeo is giving back to children who are less fortunate than others. Each night of the rodeo, they invite children from a different children’s home who are fed a nice meal by some of the churches in Bonham and the surrounding area prior to the rodeo performance. The goal is to make these children feel as special as they truly are for that night. Once you attend the Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo, you never know how it may affect your life. One couple actually met at the rodeo one year and were married a week before the event the following year. They have attended the rodeo every year since as a way to celebrate their lives together. 868 - Jack Daniel’s After Party

“This is it,” revealed Chad Berger, six time and current reigning PBR Stock Contractor of the Year. “We’re going to retire After Party at the end of this season. We’ll buck him sparingly in the fall and hopefully he’ll go back to the Finals (PBR Built Ford Tough Series Finals) for one more time. Then we’re going to turn him loose in the pasture with some selected cows and let him sire some champions.”

“I tip my hat to Jackie Ratjen for raising a bull like After Party,” Chad said. “He came out of Jackie Ratjen’s breeding program.” Jackie was known for breeding champions. After Party’s sire was Yellow Cat and his dam was sired by Jr 65 JR’s Ghost. He was the 2010 PRCA Bull of the Year and has been a PBR and NFR Finals bull.

Jack Daniel’s After Party is an amazing, twelve year-old bovine veteran who is still going strong enough to carry Shane Proctor to a PBR BFTS Championship round win with a score of 88 points. That ride was last month in Billings, Montana, and that round win helped Shane to a second place finish for the event.

“After Party has been one of the longest lasting, most consistent bulls of this era,” Slade Long of Probullstats.com offered. “He was the PRCA bull champ in 2010 and came to the PBR in 2011. He reminds me of Red Wolf. (Red Wolf of Herrington Cattle Company was a very famous, consistent bucker with over 100 career outs. He was retired in 2000 at the age of twelve).

“I think After Party has withstood the test of time, that’s for sure,” Chad added. “He’s been so good for so long, it’s unnatural. He’s still got a lot of spunk for an old bull. A lot of bulls get more docile in their older years, but not him. He’ll still run you over if you get in his way. And he is still pretty active in the chute, too.”

“After Party has been a really consistent bull that has bucked at a high level for a long time,” Slade continued. “He’s slowed down a little now from when he was consistently a 44-45 point bull. But he’s not the kind of bull that relies on sheer power to get guys off. He’s very sturdy, and he knows how to do his thing. And he does it.”

Chad and his partner Clay Struve acquired After Party from Jeff Talley of the Circle T Ranch & Rodeo in the deal that brought 2012 PBR Champion bull Asteroid and Shepherd Hills Trapper to Dakota Rodeo in 2016. Jeff Talley had retired all three bulls the previous year. Chad bought them and brought them out of retirement.

According to Probullstats.com, After Party has a lifetime buck-off percentage of 74.14%. He has a career bull score average of 43.979. He has had 116 career outs and has been successfully ridden 30 times. After Party has 83 PBR BFTS outs, which is ninth all time. He has 55 PBR BFTS career buck-offs, which is twentieth all time. He boasts thirteen round winning outs and thirteen rider round wins. This 1,500 lb. bovine athlete has out-dueled some of the best cowboys in the “toughest sport on dirt”. He’s conquered riders like two-time PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney, former PBR World Champion Mike Lee, two-time PBR World Champion Chris Shivers, former three-time PBR World Champion Silvano Alves, and former PBR BFTS World Champion Kody Lostroh. After Party and the rest of Chad Berger’s bulls will be returning from Oklahoma to his ranch in Mandan, North Dakota after this weekend’s Last Cowboy Standing in Las Vegas. Jack Daniel’s After Party hangs out in Mandan with Crossfire and Cooper Tires Brown Sugar, where they share a pen together. There are runways to exercise the bulls, and they get pushed around some but mostly they spend a lot of time digging in the dirt and playing. After Party will make his next appearance at Chad’s upcoming June 16 &17 Real Time Pain Relief Velocity Tour Dakota Community Bank PBR Bull Riding Challenge at the Bismarck Civic Center in Bismarck, North Dakota. This event also features 2012 PBR World Champion Bull Asteroid, and current PBR World Champion Bull contenders Pearl Harbor and Smooth Operator. In a special challenge, two-time PBR World Champion cowboy J.B.Mauney will

face Pearl Harbor, the current number one PBR World Champion Bull contender. If J.B. can outsmart and outride him for eight seconds, he’ll walk away with $25,000! After Party has been around for a long time and he’s had quite a career. This bull loves to buck and he knows how to dump a rider. But cowboys have had success on him, too. If they are on their game, don’t make any mistakes and are able to hang on until that eight second buzzer sounds, they are guaranteed a high score. He’s been ridden 30 times in his career, and the rider’s scores average 88.85 points. “After Party is an exceptional bull,” Chad shared. “I think he’s one of the best, most consistent bulls the PBR has ever seen. He’s in the same class as Red Wolf. He’s a pretty special animal.”

Shane Proctor

Champion Bull Rider and so Much More By Barbara Pinnella Back in April, in his home state of Washington, Shane Proctor conquered Pearl Harbor. Well, it was more like domination. It happened in the 15/15 Bucking Battle at the Tacoma Invitational, when Shane scored a 93.5 on his Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / H&C Bucking Bulls partner. This not only gave Proctor the win, but by posting his highest score of the season and grabbing his first 90-point ride since back in 2013, he also ended Pearl Harbor’s buck-off streak at 14. And it wasn’t as if he has been on the bull in the past to get a feel for what he might do. “I’ve never had the opportunity to get on him before,” Shane told us. “I was just lucky enough to have him this time. The ride was touchand-go the whole time. He sucked back really hard when he kicked out of there, and he wanted to walk and kick. I just had to go real loose on him, and just take it inch by inch.”

the Last Cowboy Standing. Shane went into that event sitting 13th in the BFTS standings. But while some men will take advantage of the summer break, that is the last thing on his mind. He likes to stay active and busy, and that is what he intends to do. It also can give him more of an opportunity to travel with his wife Jessi, who is a very accomplished barrel racer. “When summer break hits, that’s when I get busier. I do whatever it takes to qualify for both Finals (PBR and NFR). Also, Jessi and I get to travel together from time to time, when we are going to the same rodeos. We will also take some time off and go to a barrel race. Between the PBR Finals and the NFR we went to a big barrel race up in North Carolina. That is definitely fun for us.”

Shane is certainly enjoying that part of rodeo. He gets to watch Jessi and spend time with her. But the competitor in him does not really want him sitting on the sidelines, so he also has joined the ranks as part-time barrel racer. “We have a bunch of horses, many of which are young, and it’s something that she likes to do. For me to be interested in something that she wants to do is great. If I’m gonna go to a big barrel racing, then I might as well enter too. It’s fun, because it’s something that we can do together.” Being a professional bull rider, longevity cannot be guaranteed. To that end, breeding performance and ranch horses has been addressed, and is something that Shane and Jessi have started working on early. “We mainly concentrate on breeding for barrel horses, but we are trying to incorporate roping horses into it too. Mainly just want a nice, all-around horse. We have been preparing for this the last couple of years. We went out and purchased brood mares. “We had some young horses that we really liked, so we went ahead and purchased their moms. We’ll try to breed the next superstar. We

have three foals this year and expect four next year. We don’t have a real big farm; we are still pretty small. We will probably have to expand at some point.” Shane and Jessi stay plenty busy at home when they are not competing. Shane enjoys doing things around the house and going to the gym. But the majority of their time at home is spent – no surprise – working with the horses. And as those numbers grow, the horses will occupy more and more of their time. That is of course, after Shane hangs up his spurs, and that is not something that he is looking to do in the near future. And why should he? Even though he has been plagued with an injured riding (right) wrist this season, he still managed that great aforementioned ride to win the 15/15 Bucking Battle. Shane has been to the PBR World Finals eight times and has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo five times. He also was the 2011 World Champion bull rider at the WNFR, and last year at that same event became the average champion. His many fans want to be able to watch him for a lot longer. We wish him the best of luck in ALL of his endeavors.

By Barbara Pinnella At 18 years of age, Koal Livingston joins the ranks of other young guns such as Jess Lockwood and Derek Kolbaba, living the dream of being a professional bull rider. On the first year anniversary of getting his PBR pro card, Livingston marched into Las Vegas to participate in Last Cowboy Standing. “I got my card as soon as I turned 18,” Koal said. “I also bought my PRCA card at the same time, and I hit a couple of those as well. I also went to a few CBRs (Championship Bull Riding), but I didn’t go to those very long.” He might have gotten those cards when he turned 18, but back in 2015 he won a truck at the Don Gay Bull Riding Tour Finals. “It was something I went to all year long, and the Finals were in Kansas. Actually, in the middle of that year I broke my back and had to sit out the second half of the year. But I was far enough ahead

to hold everybody off. I came back right in time for the Finals. You didn’t have to be 18 to compete in that, so that’s why I went.” Livingston didn’t just decide to become a bull rider out of the blue. His father Nathan rode bulls when he was Koal’s age, and then became a bullfighter. He fought bulls while Koal was riding. Koal’s 17-year-old brother Kane rode bulls when they were growing up, but now he fights bulls like their dad. His youngest brother does nothing with rodeo right now; he likes video games and things like that. Koal also has some step-brothers and sisters. Livingston has graduated high school. He was home schooled his sophomore year, but the other years he was in school he participated in other sports. “I did some boxing for working out; my grandpa Paul Stephens fought pro and trained fighters for a long time as well. He trained me a lot growing up to keep me in shape. I also played baseball, but I quit that once I started driving and could go to more bull ridings.” Koal’s grandfather was instrumental in his upbringing, teaching him to never give up and never quit. When knocked down, get back up and keep fighting. Paul knows from where he speaks. He was the four-time Fort Worth Star-Telegram Texas State Golden Gloves champion. He had an excellent amateur boxing record of 345 wins and only 21 losses. He also had 13 professional fights. Koal Livingston hopes to be the next young gun in the PBR.

Livingston was well on his way to competing in the Golden Gloves tournament himself, but he broke his leg – you guessed it – riding bulls. But it was the bull riding that he went back to, even though it is still the boxing that helps keep him in fighting shape. He just has a different type of opponent now. So why the PBR over all the other options to choose from? “I decided to go with the PBR for a few reasons, but mainly the money is much better. If you show up and do your job, you are going to get rewarded for it. You can go win a Velocity event and actually get to be seen on the Built Ford Tough. They give you a chance to get there. “With the pro rodeos,” Koal continued, “I feel that it takes so long to get anywhere with it. You also have to pay a pretty big fee at the pro rodeos. For the PBR Velocity tours there is a smaller fee, and if you get on the BFTS there are no fees. For me it’s a better deal. “Normally I travel with my girl friend Neeci Moore, but my family came to Vegas also – that was a big event.” Sometimes getting to the bull riding is as dangerous as the event itself. On the way to a Velocity event the weekend before Last Cowboy Standing, Koal and Neeci were rear-ended.

“We were in a lot of traffic, and the person in front of us locked up their brakes. I locked mine up too, and the person behind us ran right into the back of us. Messed the truck up pretty good. “We were fine. We also had our two dogs in the bed of the truck with us as well. We have a Rottweiler and a blue healer. But they were fine too, thankfully. We used to try to take the dogs with us when we can, but we don’t do it very often now. They are getting pretty big,” he said, laughing. In his spare time Koal likes to work out; he enjoys training. His grandfather has a gym in his backyard that Koal can obviously use whenever he chooses. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury has prevented him from taking much advantage of that. “My left shoulder, my free arm, is messed up,” he told us. “When I reach forward it slips out from time to time. I landed on it, but it happened over time. It’s an old injury that has bothered me for some time now.” Hopefully that shoulder heals up sooner rather than later. National Professional Bull Riders Association News Galveston County Fair & Rodeo hosted another great National Professional Bull Riders event on Friday, April 21, 2017 in Hitchcock, Texas. With $2,000 added money on the line, 30 bull riders from around Texas and Louisiana put on their spurs and chaps and got to working on those bull ropes. Judges, Mel Kimbro, from Bandera, TX, and Miles Hare, from Dayton, TX, drew each bull rider a bull for the long round. Draw for the long round is posted. West Huggins, Gardendale, TX, brought in our flag girls, paid the bills with our sponsors, made our introductions and here we go…bull riding!! After a couple of fouls on the gate and a re-ride, the long round was completed and the following bull riders are on their way to the short round with an opportunity to win the Monsoon Silver Trophy Buckle. Short Round draw is ready and Robbie Hodges, Cave Springs, GA, is showing the crowd his dog can do tricks while the bull riders get ready. The short round proved to be a little challenging but long time NPBR contestant, Jonathan Brown, Houston, TX, scored 84.5 on M Bar M 902 Red Devil giving him a 162.5 on two head. We closed the night out with an 87 point ride on Hat Brand’s 161 Big Rig and a second generation bull rider… Gary Richards Jr giving him a 170.5 on two head and a first place win along with the Monsoon Silver Trophy Buckle. Congratulations.
