I am always a glass half-full kind of guy and have a pretty optimistic outlook for just about everything. However, I have been especially encouraged this month as we see the number of bull riding / rodeo events seem to increase greatly.

We also get to meet a man that you have probably heard before as a bull rider, Cooper Kanngiesser, who has transitioned to life behind the bucking chutes and is carrying on a family tradition which he and his dad started many years ago. Kanngiesser Cattle Company is the ranch who bred and raised the great bucking bull, We are excited to present the July issue of Humps N Horns to you. Does Your Kid Want to be a Bull Rider?

I love the fact that there are so many Junior Rodeos in our country.

Youngsters in the timed events have a great opportunity to develop and mature into becoming great contestants because they are taken care of by parents and people who know how the process works. In the bull riding area, calf riding and steer riding are great, and then come the bulls. Most associations have age groups and the age for most to advance to bulls is 13-14. An appropriate age to transition to a higher level but most are forced to advance to Jr bulls that are not authentic junior bulls. All the bucking bull breeding programs have damaged the quality and quantity of young bull riders. If you have a young kid who wants to be a bull rider you had better be prepared to protect him against the born to buck programs out there. Breeders seek a place to buck their prospects and many will use your kid to train their bucking bulls.

Don’t allow your kid to be a victim of this.

A junior bull is not a baby bucking bull but an under developed bull that probably has no future as a bucking bull. Search out someone bucking Jr bulls whose focus is teaching the kids rather than just trying to raise great bucking bulls. There are some out there but you have to be the one to do your homework. Your kid is yours and if you have to drive a little bit further to get him on the right kind of bulls it’s worth the extra $.

I get criticized a lot for speaking out against how it is done in so many circles. I’ll take the criticism if it helps you help your kid develop into a great bull rider and not get wiped out in the process. Start naming the greats from the past and then ask each of them how they developed into great bull riders and I’ll guarantee you that if they are being honest with you they will tell you that they learned on easy bulls and that as kids they never faced this because there weren’t these type of programs happening. Some kids develop earlier than others but all the greats spent a lot of time learning on bulls that had little if any chance to buck them off. It’s in your hands, so don’t trust your kids safety with just

anyone putting them on just anything. Find out who they are and what they are into, building bull riders or building bucking bulls.

Here is a little side note: I moved up to riding steers from calves at the age of 9 and by the time I was 13 1/2, I’d probably been on in the neighborhood of 2500 head of Corriente roping steers, with a very high riding percentage. The first bull I got on was three weeks before my 14th birthday and that bull was about a 13 point 900 pound jump kicker. That bull had zero chance of getting me on the ground.

During my time of competition at high school and junior rodeos, I probably got on 600 or 700 head of junior type bulls. By the time I was a junior in high school I was competing against grown men and holding my own. After graduation, I attended one semester of college and decided to go on to the professional level full-time.

Throughout my professional career I got on a lot of practice bulls most of which were not a better bull than an 18 point animal.

My theory behind this was being able to work on fundamentals without having to put out 100% of effort just to stay on one and less chance for injury.

If you are pursuing a bull riding career please have a strategy in your practice habits and where you choose to compete. Along with that, don’t make your goals all short term; have some long-term goals that look like they may be out of reach and keep working toward accomplishing the short-term goals in the process.

Every young person coming out of high school has choices to make: go to college for a two year or four-year degree; take a year off, get a job and see what the world has to offer. But then when you are 6’4” 270 pounds of pure muscle you would think the career path is paved and ready to go. Football scholarship and if you are good enough, go further.

But sometimes that path has a crossroads in it. Blake Sharp is a perfect example. He graduated from high school and was offered a football scholarship at East Mississippi Community College.

His dad had raised bucking bulls for years and prior to college, Blake had started buying his own bucking bulls. School and football were

not his first love. The bulls were and now 12 years later, let’s see where the crossroads has taken Blake and what a typical week is like for this stock contractor.

Tell us about yourself.

My dad Tony Sharp had bulls my entire life. He started buying bulls in the early 1980’s pre PBR. He was one of the original stock contractors with the PBR. I have been around them my entire life.

I was offered a scholarship to East Mississippi Community College and while playing, we won the national championship. By going to East Mississippi, I was still able to care for my bulls and compete with them. I was raising them, competing in UBBI events, and selling bulls. I started my own herd of bulls when I was 16 or 17 years old. I eventually culled the heifers that were not producing the type of bulls I wanted and bought 40-50 breeding stock from Justin Cox who had 6C bloodlines.

I was offered a Division I scholarship at Louisiana Tech. I had reached the point where I had to make a decision between football and college versus bucking bulls. That was 2014, I wanted to breed better bucking bulls. I had to dedicate my life to one or the other.

I still love football but bulls are my true love. I wanted to keep it rolling and make a living out of it. This is totally my business and my source of income. Dad helps when he can but he does not travel and has his

forestry operation. We have about 500-600 acres and then we lease more property.

I am fortunate to have some great partners.

They are everything to me.

How do you determine where to take your bulls?

There is always something going on somewhere.

There are competitions everywhere.

You usually travel on weekends and get back on Monday. You feed them, care for them, worm them. I have a huge sand pile for them to play in.

This is something I learned from my college football days. You have to keep their feet moving. At least two days a week the bulls are in the “sand box”.

As for places to go, I mainly focus on PBR events.

How do they get selected for PBR events?

It is getting the bulls in front of Director of Livestock, Cody Lambert. You can send videos but they have to be a good quality.

You might enter them in a Classic and they catch Cody’s attention.

It might take 3-4 times such as Mike’s Motive or DJ Long John.

These bulls either have it or they don’t. They have to have the heart. Your job is to do everything to get them there. I need to push them just as I was pushed by my coaches in football.

Those that have the heart and skill go to the PBR. Some start at the Velocity Tour events.

What supplies to you have to carry for the bulls? What is their “tote bag”?

I have my bulls on a good feeding program with minerals and vitamins. I do not use supplements. Good hay is hard to find so I travel with their feed and hay and a good hose and water and feed buckets.

If the trip is a few days, how often do you stop?

Every ten hours. I arrange my trip ahead of time. Get my GPS and check for sale barns or stock yards. They are always accommodating. I want inside coverage so the bulls are not in the hot sun or raining. Rarely are we charged.

Once at an event, what arrangements are made to stable the bulls?

The accommodations for the bulls are really good. They find a place that is comfortable with good cover. At the Finals, they have exercise pens and covered pens.

Who determines the line up as to which bull goes first, second, third etc.?

PBR determines the lineup. Usually that means Cody Lambert.

If a bull doesn’t perform, does the stock contractor get paid?

You do not get paid if the rider is granted a re-ride. If a bull has had 5 good outs, then a bad trip, Cody Lambert might give him another chance. If it’s the first time out, he won’t be invited back.

How much do stock contractors get paid?

$400 per out. You get more on the short round. You make money breeding, competing and selling bulls.

What men do you admire the most?

My father Tony Sharp. He was in the bull business many years ago. He was tough old school. Taught me to do what is best. When I gave up football, he was proud of me to carry on in the bull business. Everywhere I go there are people who remember my dad and always tell me to tell him hello. He had an impact on the industry in that he would put on events and bring bulls. I carry on the tradition.

Henry Wilson from Gilmer, Texas who has bulls called Shownuff, a four-time PBR finalist, Detroit Lean Short and The Sauce. He is like a grandfather to me.

Cody Lambert. He is hard on me and reminds me of my college coach. Hard but lots of caring too. He wants me to do better.

How do you find partners?

I am still trying to accomplish my dreams. I keep pushing and put myself in every part of the industry, sales, competition, PBR. I have partners such as Henry Wilson, American Spirits, Koe Wetzel country singer, and High Voltage Cattle.

Best part of the job?

All the bulls I keep are like family. It takes time to get to the top of their game. I can love on them in the pen but they know what their job is. Each has a different personality.

Worst part of the job?

The traveling. 20 hours is not unusual and then finding them a place to rest.

How many days are you on the road?

Just about every weekend.

How many days do you rest the bulls?

They might be on the road for 2-3 weeks then they are going to be home for 2-3 weeks.

Who are your favorite bulls?

Slingin Tears. He is eight. Mike’s Motive he is young, 4 years old.

What do you do when you retire a bull?

Depends. If he has been really good, we use him as a breeding bull. If he has been good to me, I never sell him. Not so good, we sell them to someone who will use him.

The world is a BIG place and we often feel as if we are lost and alone. The story of Hagar reminds us we are never alone or lost.

God sees, God hears, and God is working. This story of sin and redemption is the story of every follower of Jesus. Hagar finds herself in the wilderness. She is alone, scared, lost, and without HOPE. However, God enters the story and He changes everything.

The reality is, without God we are alone and without HOPE, with God HOPE is alive.

Hagar’s wilderness experience brought her face-to-face with God and taught her some important truths about Him. She learned that He is the living God who sees us and hears our cries when we hurt. The name of the well means “The well of One who lives and sees me.” He is a personal God, concerned about abused people and unborn babies. He knows the future and cares for those who will trust Him. ~ Bible Exposition Commentary I am not sure what “wilderness” you are walking through, but God does. He knows your past pain, present problems, and uncertain future. The God who saw this desperate servant girl also sees YOU. Cry out to Him and He will rescue you.

One Dish Round Steak Bake INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

• Tenderized round steak • Potatoes, peeled, sliced • Sliced onion • Sliced jalapenos • Slap Ya Mama seasoning • 1 can Cream of Mushroom soup

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Line baking dish with aluminum foil, leaving enough on the sides to cover the meat and veggies.

3. Season round steak with pepper and Slap Ya Mama cajun seasoning and place in baking dish.

4. Cover with sliced potatoes, sliced onion, and sliced jalapenos, and can of Cream of Mushroom soup.

6. Cover baking dish with aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees until potatoes and onions are completely done.

Amounts can vary depending on the number of people for which you cook.

the american heritage: a risk worth taking ABBI (American Bucking Bull Inc.) is an organization that was developed to enhance the value of the American Bucking Bull breed by keeping the integrity of the registry and improve the bucking bull business as a whole. The American Heritage event itself was created to be one of the biggest payouts a bucking bull could earn as a two-year-old, with the concept of betting on your breeding and genetic foundation. It is a known risk stock contractors have been taking for years by relying solely on their bloodlines themselves and that is where the event name originated.

The American Heritage began as an idea almost 20 years ago between Dillon Page of D&H Cattle Co. and then ABBI Executive Director Joe Merrick. Page brought the idea to Merrick who modeled the event after an AQHA horse program.

“I can’t take credit for coming up with the futurity concept.”

Merrick said. “It’s a method of creating a large purse or pot for a competitive livestock event that we just borrowed from the racing quarter horse industry and then modified it to fit the bucking bull world.”

The event kicked off in Ardmore, Oklahoma while being produced by Page, but was turned over to the ABBI due to the lack of interest, in hopes that the event would grow with the company. After Merrick took over, the “American Heritage” was born and in 2006 ABBI produced their first event with Outa Da Bleu from Circle T Ranch winning the title with a score of 86 points for $50,000.

“We wanted to name what we hoped to be the highest paying bucking bull event each year in a manner that paid tribute to the pioneer breeders who came before us and laid the genetic foundation for the great bulls of today.” Merrick said. “We felt their contribution to the future generations was our heritage from them, so we named it with them in mind.”

“I believe the event name itself reminds our members what the concept of the American Heritage actually is.” Said ABBI President Jay Daugherty. “It is a bet on genetics and breeding programs alone. There is some risk, of course, but that is what adds to the excitement and brings an entirely different approach to the competition.”

If everyone is allowed to wait to enter until they know which calf from their crop is best, the number of entries is so depleted that the value of the event, and consequently the value of the potential winner, is greatly reduced.

“At its best, the futurity system creates value for the calves that are nominated and have been kept eligible for a big payoff event.” Merrick explained. “Additionally, the breed itself enjoys higher demand and new people coming into the business who are attracted by the big purses and payoffs.”

“We aren’t supposed to know who is going to win the event before it actually takes places, that is why nominations have always been done in March of the calf ’s yearling year.”

Daugherty added. “With great risk comes great reward and that has always been a large part of the American Heritage event.”

Although these last 20 years have altered the approach to the American Heritage, eliminating a lot of why it was created in the first place, it’s time to get down to brass tacks and remind everyone what this event stands for and what it means to and for our industry.

“As I said before, we felt like our main job besides keeping the integrity of the registry was to improve the value of ABBI registered bucking cattle.” Merrick said. “That’s the best way we could provide benefit to our breeders for their efforts and expense. By offering opportunities to compete for unprecedented payoffs we hoped to create excitement, lure new players into the bucking bull family and grow the registry and the business as a whole.”

“Bucking calves and trying to get ‘ahead of the game’ take away from the American Heritage event in is entirety.” Daugherty said. “We have to take a step back and not allow ourselves to get so caught up in the winning aspect of this event but focus on the core values and what the event truly represents.”

BS Cattle Co. finds homegrown success with 2021 American Heritage Futurity Champion This past weekend [June 11-12, 2021] during ABBI’s annual American Heritage event in Duncan, Oklahoma, Brandon Stewart — along with his wife Kenzie, their son Tilden and partners Zane Walker and Joe and Nina Webb — walked away fulfilling a life-long dream after his bull 918 Down Payment won the 2021 American Heritage Futurity with 93 points. Calling it a life-long dream may sound like a stretch for some, but the 25-year-old ABBI Stock Contractor truly has worked most of his life to reach this level of success in the bucking bull industry.

The American Heritage is where stock contractors and breeders alike nominate calves based on their bloodlines alone. It is the concept of betting on breeding and genetic foundation that ends in large payouts and a highly prestigious title to earn. The ABBI took over this event in 2006, just one year after Brandon’s dad entered into the bucking bull business.

“The bucking bull business is something I have been a part of for the majority of my life,” said Brandon. “It all started when I was nine years old. My dad had purchased a few ABBI registered cows and started trying to raise bulls and like any other kid at that age, I wanted to be a part of what my dad was doing. When my dad started his original venture into this business I know he had no idea how it would unfold, he gave up a lot to help me along the way, more so with his time. Some of my greatest memories with him were the hours spent in the shop building gates and panels, setting my arena up, and working bulls. He’s been there from the beginning and he’s always supported me and made me feel like I could achieve anything I ever set my mind to, and to me, that is priceless.”

Brandon immersed himself in everything bucking bull from the beginning, researching anything he could get his hands on through The Breeders Connection message board. Being so young, he had no way to afford to get into the business, so he decided to start a business of his own at the age of nine by marketing and selling bull semen for some of the top stock contractors and bull breeders around while earning a percentage of what he sold them for. He then moved to creating websites for breeders to showcase their cattle.

“Creating these businesses and working hard to develop relationships with so many people is exactly what has molded me into who I am today, and what I have accomplished.”

Brandon explained. “One of my very biggest supporters as a young kid, and even still today is Scott Accomazzo of the Ace of Spades Ranch. Scott took me under his wing when I was a curious, question-asking little kid with nothing more to offer than my time and desire to succeed. So much of the success that I have had in this industry is tied back to Scott in one way or another, and for that I’ll be forever grateful!”

Down Payment is sired by 58T Flyin Train (a breed bull Scott had his hand in helping Brandon purchase), and out of a BS Cattle Co. home-raised Wild Child daughter. Wild Child was the first breed bull he and Scott partnered on while Down Payment’s granddam, Page 610, is also one of the first cows Brandon received from Scott as part of a payment after helping him put on a sale.

“I’ve been blessed and fortunate to have had so many opportunities throughout the years,” Brandon said.

“Opportunities that I feel only came to me because of hard work and being around the right people, and this bull is a direct representation of that.”

Zane Walker went to work for Brandon over the summer of 2019 and ended up following his passion and continuing his work in the bucking bull business while forgoing playing college football. As a Christmas bonus from Brandon for all his hard work and help, Zane was given a couple choices but ultimately chose half interest in Down Payment. Their goal was then to sell half interest in the bull and remain partners on him. Once Joe and Nina Webb hopped on board, Zane used his portion of the money to put a down payment on a three quarter ton truck and that’s where this bull’s name originated.

“The feeling of winning the American Heritage is nothing short of amazing.” Brandon said. “This prestigious event is one that most every bucking bull breeder strives to win, and to have won it with this bull makes it that much sweeter.

Down Payment is a ranch-raised calf, and his success has been a true testament to the work that Zane and myself have put into him, and the faith that Joe and Nina had in sticking with us. I’ve known since his yearling year how talented this bull was, but we’ve been through plenty of ups and downs to this point.”

Just 26 bulls into the futurity on Saturday afternoon and it was Down Payment’s turn to buck. After busting out of the chute covered in dirt and putting on performance of a lifetime, he secured the top spot in the competition early. This would end up being the best out of the day, outlasting another 70-plus bulls that followed him, to earn the title.

“You knew from the start that this calf had the tools to be great, he just needed to put the trip together.” Kenzie said about their newly-crowned 2021 American Heritage Futurity Champion. “918 has had some great outs this year, as well as some mediocre ones. Those are the kind of bulls that make you the most nervous. We all kept the faith in that calf knowing his time would come. We are thankful he decided to turn it on at the right time, on the right day, and at the biggest event of the year.”

“I have been fortunate enough to be beside Brandon for the past 5 years in his career in the bucking bull industry. It quickly became apparent how important it was to him to win this event. This win is such a monumental milestone, but to win it with a ranch raised calf has made it that much sweeter.

If you know Brandon, you know he puts a lot of time and energy into the genetics of our herd. To see that pay off brings a sense of accomplishment that wouldn’t be there if that calf wasn’t born on our place.”

“Down Payment was a calf that was a little slow to start, but quickly became one of the favorites.” Brandon added. “He showed us glimpses of greatness early on, and I knew that his maternal brother from the year before had a lot of talent, but unfortunately broke his leg early on. That coupled with the idea of wanting to maximize his earning potential and ultimately his value as a competition bull were the deciding factors for nominating him for the American Heritage.”

“Between delivery changes, back and forth, a bad attitude in the bucking chute, a hair trigger, and coming up empty handed plenty of times, it’s these challenges that make this victory that much more special.” Brandon said. “To top it all off, having my wife Kenzie, and son Tilden by my side through every step of this process, and being able to share this special moment with them is what means the most to me. We’ve come close to winning this event in the past, but it was well worth the wait! My parents don’t always come to these events, but they happened to make this trip and I’m glad to be able to share that moment with them as well!”

Kanngiesser Cattle Co. Cooper & Kylie Kanngiesser Attica, Kansas is a small, quiet, farming community in south central Kansas that has a population of 626. While Attica may be considered small and quiet, you might want to take another look, because there is a ranch that sits on 360 acres just outside of Attica that is booming with activity. The Kanngiesser family is busy breeding and raising bucking bulls, performance horses, black Angus cows and doing all sorts of rodeo stuff!

Cattle Company’s breeding program. Asteroid was the son of 331 Cotton and the grandson of Cotton’s mama, 994 Mama Cotton, who was one of the Kanngiesser’s original Watusi cows. “We knew that Asteroid was really something special, and that he would be an outstanding bucking bull,” Cooper revealed. “We sold him as a three-year old and he was later bought by Howard Talley of Circle T Ranch and Rodeo and cared for and hauled by Gene Melton.”

Kanngiesser Cattle Company was started by Cooper Kanngiesser and his dad, Mark, back in 2000. “We started with six Watusi cows and one black Brangus cow,” Cooper explained. “The Watusi cows are big and long-legged and throw kick. We bred those cows to Jimmy Crowther’s smaller bulls because they spin and buck. That has worked out well for us.”

“I found it was more satisfying to see Asteroid win the PBR Bull of the Year Championship than any of the bull riding events I won,” Cooper admitted. “It was a lifetime goal fulfilled. We knew he was special from the start. We were incredibly happy when Asteroid won the Championship.

Kanngiesser Cattle Company was just a small breeding outfit who had bred a world champion bucking bull! You might say it put us on the map!”

“I actually let her have a day off every week so she can barrel race,” laughed Cooper. “Kylie is the backbone of our entire operation. She studies the bloodlines and has been a big part of our breeding program. She does most of the feeding of the animals. She also raises horses too. She breeds and trains performance horses. We have a stud, Sun Frost, that is just a beautiful horse.

We also have ten mares.”

Cooper comes from a rodeo family. His dad, Mark, is a former bull rider. “My dad always had bulls,” Cooper shared. “I started riding steers and calves when I was four years old and rode bulls until I was 32 years old. I used to get on as many bulls as I could. I really liked bull riding better than anything else. I won the Kansas High School Rodeo Association State Finals Bull

Bull 331 - Cotton

Asteroid to three-time PBR Bull of the Year Champion Bushwacker, who many call the best bull to ever buck in the PBR. “Asteroid is one of the best bulls we have seen in the PBR…it can be argued that Asteroid is the second-best bull to ever buck in the PBR.” Cooper and his wife, Kylie purchased their current ranch about a year and a half ago. At that time, they also took over the Kanngiesser Cattle Company bucking bull program.

Their spread includes a complete set up for bucking. They purchased the first arena that the CBR had, that includes six chutes and a holding pen. They also have just constructed a full-size arena to accommodate rodeo roping and barrel racing competitions. Kylie is a barrel racer and a former champion pole bender. She still manages to compete in a barrel racing event about once a week.

“I rode in the PRCA and went to the NFR once,” Cooper continued. “I rode some in the CBR and the PBR as well.

granddad, Ed, helped me develop my riding style, which became a self-preservation style. You have to be able to get away from a bull as well as ride him. I think bull riding is 90% mental. I always tried not to over-think it.”

“We are a ranch-based family, and deeply involved in rodeo,” Cooper added. “Our son, Talan, who is a couple of weeks away from turning 14 years old, started riding bulls last year. We haul some junior bulls now, and we spent all last week at the Kansas State Junior High Bull Riding Finals. We are trying to build the younger generation. We want to help junior riders to learn how to ride.

Kids need to step up, and we are helping them to do that. My wife is teaching our six-year-old daughter, Katherine, how to barrel race. We also have a daughter, Lexi, who is one and a half years old.”

Kanngiesser Cattle Company has a couple of really good bucking bulls right now. One is fouryear-old 643 Home Wrecker and the other is his full brother, three-year-old 743 Wreck It Ralph.

“Blake Sharp hauls Home Wrecker to PBR events for us,” Cooper disclosed. “We try to haul Wreck It Ralph to as many classics as we can, but we also have him covering the cows right now. We also just sold Old School, another three-year-old bull, to Sam Mitchell of the M Rafter E. Keep your eyes on Old School, because he is going to be one of the big-time bulls!”

“We just had a sale and got rid of a bunch of twoyear-old bulls,” Cooper declared. “We are down to about 20-30 bulls. We’re trying to sell our bulls a little younger now, to get them out there. We try to raise good bulls and prove them before we sell them. If there is a question, we tell the buyer that this bull is merely ‘a prospect’.”

“This year we have the best set of yearlings that we have ever raised,” Cooper concluded. “They are ‘Futurity Ready’. We have at least one really good bull that stands out every year. Our bull program is as good as any. We are trying to breed another Bull of the Year!”

Western Wanderings a cowboy’s fishin’ line and hook I took some time quite recently To set by the stream with a book As I sat there enjoying the sun and the breeze I sat back and took time to look

I flung baited hook in the water To wait for a tug on the stick It didn’t take long for a fish to bite I pulled him ashore right quick

This spot that I found was really nice I relaxed as I took in the scene And while I enjoyed this pure nature A fish jumped real high in the stream

I jumped to my feet and flipped him back That fish was a good sized bass I took off the hook and layed that fish out And fileted him there on the grass

I got up and went to my saddlebags To get fishin’ line and a hook And I cut me a branch off a big old tree I sure wanted some fish to cook!

Before very long, I was all fixed up With that bass roasting over a fire I read my book and ate my fish What more can a cowboy desire?

I took my knife and dug in the ground To find a nightcrawler or two I baited the hook and was ready To do what fishermen do
