Letter from the Editor

Howdy! 2020 is off to a fast and furious start for bull riding with the PBR and PRCA both kicking off the new year in fine fashion. New York City and Chicago for the PBR while the PRCA ProRodeo has taken Denver and Fort Worth by storm.

I don’t know about you, but for me, the last couple of months following the PBR World Finals and the National Finals Rodeo, are tough to get through when the number of bull riding events slows down. It’s almost as if we suffer from withdrawals and can’t wait for things to pick back up so we can satisfy our craving again.

Thankfully, there are always some great bull riding events scattered across this great country of ours. I appreciate the work that producers put forth so we have an opportunity to enjoy the sport we love. My hat is off to all of you who work

hard all year to make this the greatest sport on dirt.

I do want to let you know that I have a correction from our January issue. The last two stanzas of Hello,The Camp! were inadvertently cut off last month so we have reprinted the entire poem by Kelly B. Robbins on page 46 in our Western Wanderings. Kelly does a great job writing about cowboy life and I encourage you to check it out every month.

I hope you are able to stay warm and dry during this winter season.

Talking “Bull” with Brayden the other hand, Ryan Dirteater rode a veteran bull, Nailed, for 88 points. This bull has always been one jump out and around to the left, but just last year he started to turn back to the right. This proves that old bulls can learn new tricks.

This is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today I am going to talk about the PBR in New York at Madison Square Garden. So let’s get into it.

Derek Kolbaba rode Sugar Boom Boom for 89.25 points. Derek has been on this bull a couple times now and they always puts up big points when they match up. Cooper Davis rode Lil 2 Train for 89.50 points. This bull is to the left, away from Davis’ hand, which is the direction that he struggles with, but he put up a good ride here. Mason Taylor stole the spotlight for himself recording the first 90 point ride of the year on Marquis Metal Works Bill The Butcher. This was an unbelievable ride from Taylor. He’s been really good away from his hand and continues to get better.

In round one, Mason Taylor rode Game On for 85 points. This is a really cool bull, he is one jump out to the left which is away from Taylor’s hand, but Mason has been riding bulls better away from his hand than into his hand. Colten Jesse rode Test Me for 87.75 points. Colten came out firing and had an awesome round one score. Jess Lockwood rode Birthday Cake for 88.25 points.

This bull was one jump out and cranking it to the left. Lockwood got a good score here. Kaique Pacheco rode Viper for 88.25 points. Kaique took this bull until the very end. Viper started left, came out of the spin, and then went back to the left. This bull helped get a superb score for the champ. Joao Ricardo Vieira rode Western Skies for 89.25 points. This new bull is pretty good and Joao stuck it to him. But no one was better than Eduardo Aparecido who rode Midnight Rock for 89.50 points. This was a stunning bull that was a little newer but both of these athletes came out to win.

The riders barely had time to rest before the 15/15 Bucking Battle started, about an hour later. Some of the the best bulls were not in this event. This was the opening, a Major! I wanted to see some of the top bulls like Smooth Operator, Heartbreak Kid, or Chiseled. There were still some pretty good bulls like Bill the Butcher, Lil 2 Train, and Identity Crisis. There were not that many qualified rides. It seems like some of the bulls didn’t perform like the riders expected like Jess Lockwood and Cody Teel. I really expected to see better match ups for these guys. Choose Your Influences Wisely....

There are many guys out there who ride or rode good who don’t know the first thing about the mechanics of bull riding.

Make sure that you are listening to guys who can back up their theories about how to ride bulls. Anything I teach has a proven purpose in it.

A great way to improve your chances of success in the arena is to spend time with guys who have experienced that success.

Don’t limit yourself to guys from the past or to guys who are currently winning. Guys from both of these groups have something to add to your arsenal for success. Limiting yourself to input from one group of guys will limit your vision toward riding, nothing good will come from that. Always look to the next bunch of guys and remember, you have a lot to offer them.

Their success is somewhat dependent on what you impart to them.

Stress: Stress is often a trigger for headaches. Stress can lead to tense muscles in the neck, which may cause pain. Plus, stress is frequently a sleep stealer, which may result in a headache.

Allergies: Allergies not only cause nasal congestion and sneezing, but they may also lead to headaches. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, allergy headache triggers may include smoke, certain foods, and sinus congestion.

Remedies for Headaches If headaches occur frequently or the pain is severe, it is best to see your healthcare provider. For occasional head pain, the tips below may help.

8 Tips to Cope with Headaches Headaches are one of the most common health complaints.

In fact, most people occasionally develop a headache. For some people, headaches can become chronic and occur several days every month. Even infrequent headaches can be problematic. Learning a bit more about the causes of headaches and remedies can help you reduce discomfort and get on with your day.

Causes of Headaches If you suffer from headaches, you know how it can interfere with everyday activities. In some instances, headaches are so significant, they interfere with work or school.

Identifying the cause of headaches may help you target treatment.

Several things can lead to a headache from dehydration to eye strain. A few typical causes include the following: Migraines: Migraines are a prevalent cause of headaches.

According to the Migraine Research Foundation, in the United States, about 38 million people get migraines.

In addition to pain, migraines may also cause nausea, sensitivity to light, and vision changes.

Lack of Sleep: According to research published in the Journal of Pain, a decrease in REM sleep is associated with headaches, including more severe pain.

#1) Try a melatonin lotion A lotion infused with melatonin may help you get to sleep easier, which may prevent certain types of headaches or prevent existing pain from getting worse. Melatonin is the hormone that your body makes to help you get to sleep at night. But in some cases, the amount of melatonin you produce is disrupted by various factors. Topical melatonin is an excellent option that may help to promote sleep, and in turn, reduce headaches. #2) Take an over-the-counter pain-reliever Over-the-counter pain-relievers are helpful to decrease headaches. Both acetaminophen and ibuprofen are common nonprescription medications used to treat headaches. But use over-the-counter pain medications sparsely since they can have side effects. #3) Apply a warm compress Applying a warm compress to your head or the back of your neck is a great natural way to reduce the tension that may be contributing to a headache. Wet a washcloth with warm water and apply it over your forehead for about 10 minutes. Another option is putting a heating pad around the base of your skull and the back of your neck, which can reduce tension headaches. #4) Get a massage A back and shoulder massage can ease stress and sore muscles, which might be a headache trigger. Massage promotes relaxation, which may also help you get to sleep.

You can even do a self-massage by rubbing your temples and neck to soothe tension headaches. #5) Use a cold pack In some instances, a cold pack may work better than a warm compress to reduce a headache. Just be sure not to

overdo it, which may make the pain worse. #6) Apply a lotion with magnesium Consider applying a lotion containing topical magnesium.

Low magnesium may negatively affect how well a person sleeps, which might contribute to headaches.

Plus, magnesium may help prevent migraines in some people. According to the American Migraine Foundation, magnesium may help block certain chemicals in the brain that transmit pain. It may also prevent blood vessels in the brain from narrowing, which is thought to cause migraines in some people.

Some studies show that topical magnesium may be absorbed by the body better than oral supplements.

Magnesium also may promote stress reduction and decrease anxiety, which are both helpful to prevent headaches. #7) Use a bath bomb A pain-relieving bath bomb is an excellent way to wash stress away and help you relax and get to sleep. Getting proper rest and decreasing tension can alleviate pain,

including headaches. Select a bath bomb that contains ingredients, such as arnica, Epsom salt, and chamomile. #8) Pay attention to what you eat and drink What you eat and drink may affect how frequently you develop headaches. For example, alcohol and caffeine are headache triggers in some cases. For others, skipping meals may lead to low blood sugar, which might cause a headache. Certain foods may also trigger migraines for some. Red wine, nuts, and cheese are common culprits. If you get headaches often, keep a journal and write down what you ate and drank to help you pinpoint what is leading to your headaches.

Finally, David longed to inquire of the Lord. David only had, at best, nine books of the Bible. We have sixty six! We can inquire and know far more than David ever did. He longed to let God instruct him.

We are more blessed than David!

The true blessings in this life are spiritual. Don’t waste your life chasing foolish wishes that are so material. David’s one wish should be the one we first think of!

It is amazing to see how so many Americans think that money would bring them true happiness. The reality is that past winners of lotteries just could not handle that kind of money and their lives were ruined by such a “blessing.”

As a child, we thought about finding that bottle with the genie inside who would grant us three wishes. It was rather fun to see how our friends used their wishes to bring them imaginary happiness. It was fun, but the truth is there is no magic genie.

Suppose that you could ask God to give you just one thing. What would it be? Take just a moment to think about this before you continue reading. If He promised to grant your one request, what would you ask for? What above all else would bring you the greatest joy?

David, the man after God’s own heart, prayed that God would just do one for him. His words were, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek . . .” Now if these were your words how would you finish his sentence? What one thing above all else would you ask God to give you? David desired one thing. He knew the nature of God was to answer his prayer so he asked God to give him just one thing.

“One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple” (Psa. 27:4).

Nothing in this world would bring greater happiness to David than this one request.

Look at the first part of David’s wish. He longed to dwell in the house of the Lord as long as he lived. There is more to this than for David to physically be in the tabernacle (the temple had not yet been built). Above all else he wanted to be with God. What about us? Paul defines the house of the Lord as the church (1 Tim. 3:15).

David’s one request is so readily available for us!

He longed to behold the beauty of the Lord. Take time to think about the beauty of our God. David lived before Emmanuel came.

He never saw God in the flesh, but we see Him every time we read

Strawberry Trifle INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Bake Pillsbury Strawberry Cake mix according to package instructions. Set aside to cool.

2. Slice one cup of strawberries, top with 1 tbsp. of sugar and mash. Refrigerate while cake is cooking.

3. Slice remaining strawberries.

4. For the whipped cream you can buy it already whipped or whip your own. To sweeten I added 1/2 a cup of Pillsbury Vanilla Icing to my whipped cream and beat until well combined. Remove half of the whipped cream and combine with your sugared strawberries. I used a food processor to create this strawberry cream.

5. Now it’s time to layer! In a trifle bowl, crumble 1 pan of your Pillsbury cake in the bottom. Next add whip cream mixture, follow with sliced strawberries, and then strawberry cream. Repeat with cake, strawberries and top with remaining whipped cream and strawberries.

6. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

4 cups of fresh strawberries (sliced) 1 tbsp. of sugar 1 box of Pillsbury Strawberry Cake Mix 1/2 cup Pillsbury Vanilla Icing 16 oz of Whipped Cream Oil Egg

My initial interview with Will Moyer caught him driving in his home state of Minnesota. He commented that it was ten degrees outside. I almost felt guilty when I informed him I was in Texas where the sun was shining and I had actually had my air conditioner the day before. However, one day later it was in the 30’s. If you live in Texas, you got to love our unpredictable weather!

Will is a stock contractor who raises bucking bulls. He and his wife, Irene, own Up North Cattle Company. He has changed his direction from stock for rodeo and PBR to competing in the yearling and futurity events.

But most important is his dedication to build the sport.

Tell us about yourself?

I am now retired and live in Pine City, Minnesota with my wife, Irene. I spent most of my working years setting up and managing injection molding plants in several locations across the upper Midwest. We are currently enjoying our time raising and training bucking stock here at Up North Cattle.

What made you get started in the bucking stock industry?

When I was a young man, my family was involved in rodeo stock and produced local rodeos throughout the summer. I enjoyed handling and caring for a wide variety of rodeo stock. They ranged from roping steers to horses and bulls.

What made you choose bucking bulls?

In my opinion, the bulls are the best part of the rodeo. The crowd always stays to see the bulls. This is the only part of the rodeo where the fans root for both the rider and the bull.

How did you get started?

I originally bought my first bull with Billy Jaynes back in 2007 which was part of the Exclusive Genetics Program. This is where you choose a bull based on the pedigree of the sire and dam. Then, it was a waiting process of eighteen months from conception to the first competition. You can imagine the anticipation of not knowing whether your bull bucks or not.

We could not wait, so we decided to begin the breeding process ourselves. We purchased our first bull from Gene Baker and

four heifers from the Diamond S Ranch, both out of Texas.

Throughout the years, we continued to add to our stock by buying from some of the best in the industry.

Do you have any favorite bulls?

Yes, several. One in particular was born on our ranch on March 13, 2014. I found the bull out in the pasture laying in a puddle of icy waters. I grabbed the bull and ran to the barn. He was out of a heifer cow. Irene immediately began drying the calf with whatever she could find. My job was to sort the cow and get her into the barn. Sorting off this young cow was an “oh boy” moment.

Nonetheless we got her into the barn. However, the barn was not set up for the job of milking the cow. With the help of a couple of panels, ropes and chains, the process began.

Because the calf would not suck and our lack of experience, we found ourselves watching You Tube videos in the barn on how to tube a calf. Long story short, the calf and mother were reunited at 1am. We named him Jethro. Jethro went on to win several events, with one being the Midwest Bucking Bulls Association finals in 2015. He also made the big trip to the Las Vegas finals, where he finished 5th as a yearling.

What caused you to change from PBR competition to ABBI competitions?

Being located in this part of the country, it is difficult to find riders with the level of experience to show the bull’s full potential.

Could you expand on the lack of riders?

If the sport is going to survive, we need to promote and assist riders who want to compete as a bull rider. We, the stock contractors, corporate sponsors and anyone who supports bull riding, need to become sponsors of those athletes that are willing to put the effort in to become a rider.

How have you stepped up?

During a conversation with Brandon Wren, the professional rodeo announcer, we discussed the problem of riders.

He informed me that he was going to be announcing for the Junior NFR in Las Vegas. During our discussion, we discovered there was a young man from Photo by Avid Visual Imagery

If we do not help these young riders compete in the sport, the sport could cease to exist. That is why it is important to help these athletes.

What do you think it takes to be a rider?

First of all is asking for the good Lord’s help. Next, is maintaining a healthy physical and mental body. This sport teaches so much. To get on a bull and successfully compete, you have to have discipline. You have to train daily, believe in yourself and be positive. It is your choice to smile or frown and that choice comes every morning.

our area, Hudson Cihlar, who qualified for the finals and was looking for sponsors. I looked at my wife, who had that smile on her face, and soon after became his first sponsor.

While we were at the PBR World Finals, there were several other Finals competitions going on at South Point. One being the Miniature Bull Riders (MBR) World Championship Finals I watched a young man, Jay Rodrigue, compete. He was tenths of a second from making a 90 point ride. I was so impressed by how Jay handled himself after the ride that I decided I wanted to participate in some type of sponsorship with him. I introduced myself to Jay’s grandfather and parents and asked if there was some way I could become a sponsor.

Through discussions, I found out there are actually three riders in their family, with Jay being the oldest. These riders are very young as are their parents. To take their children to various events, pay entry fees and travel can be expensive for a young family. Sponsorships are very crucial to these young athletes.

We are very proud to say Up North Cattle is one of Jay’s sponsors. It takes many people to sponsor one rider. Entry fees, travel, lost wages for the parents and other expenses. Any amount can be negotiated and is so appreciated.

Jay Rodrigue CHAMPION MINIATURE BULL RIDER

When you climb on the back of an animal that is twelve to fifteen times bigger than you and is bred to buck you off as quickly as possible, your adrenaline starts pumping and your focus becomes intense. This ultimately ignites a passion somewhere deep down inside you. This passion sometimes starts at a very early age, sometimes at a later age, but for any bull rider, that passion is there, and it helps to define his life purpose.

Jay Rodrigue has that passion. He is a champion bull rider, and he’s only thirteen years old. He is a miniature bull rider and rides in the Miniature Bull Riders, LLC. This organization was started

by Cirildo and Lillie Leal of Lockney, Texas. They started a mini bull stock contracting business back in 2010, supplying bulls to local rodeos. Their vision of a Miniature Bull Riding program inspired two-time PBR World Champion Bull Rider Chris Shivers. He partnered with them and now miniature bull riding is one of the fastest growing rodeo sports in the country.

Jay finished in third place in the MBR Senior division in 2019.

He rides in other miniature bull riding competitions as well. He was the 2019 Junior Bull Riding Champion of the Mississippi Junior High School Rodeo Association, winning a buckle and a saddle. Miniature bull riding is bull riding on a smaller scale, as both the rider and the bull are smaller than in professional rodeo. MBR bulls are fully grown, but lighter than PBR bulls, with shorter legs. MBR provides a world-class opportunity for the next generation of bull riders.

There are three divisions in the MBR. The Pee Wee division is for eight and nine-year-old cowboys. The Junior division is for ten and eleven-year-old cowboys. And the Senior division is for twelve and thirteen-year-old cowboys. Jay’s brother Carson competed in the Pee Wee division this past year as well.

Jay lives in Thibodaux, Louisiana with his parents Eddie and Danielle Rodrigue, and his brothers Carson and Cade. He attends the Max Charter School in Thibodaux and his goal is to someday win the world bull riding championship in both the PBR and the PRCA. “When I’m sitting in the chute on the back of a bull, all I think about is winning,” Jay said. “I love the sport of bull riding. I get a real adrenaline rush!”

Jay was the 2019 Mississippi Junior High School Rodeo Associatioin Junior Champion.

Jay’s most memorable bull ride was at the MBR World Finals, during the PBR Unleash the Beast World Finals In Las Vegas last November. There he rode Bones for 90 points. Bones is a miniature bull owned by Leal Miniature Bucking Bulls. “That was the first time I scored 90 points,” Jay shared. “I won the round!”

“Jay started mutton busting when he was five years old,” dad Eddie revealed. “We go to miniature bull riding events about three out of every four weekends. Jay rides in a lot of the junior high rodeos. He is working to earn scholarships to compete in college. This past summer, we spent 19 straight days on the road!”

They have a small spread in Thibodaux and keep five bulls and a couple of horses. They also have a Buckrite Powered Drop Barrel for training bull riders to perfect their technique and timing.

“During the week, I practice in the yard on our Buckrite,” Jay explained. “We’ve also got an arena.”

I asked Jay if he had a favorite bull to ride. “I like them all,” he answered. I asked him if he had a favorite bull rider in the PBR. “The PBR bull rider I look up to the most is Mason Taylor. I also like Cooper Davis and Ezekiel Mitchell.”

Eddie is a former bull rider and spent 19 years as a certified police dog trainer.

About four and a half years ago, Eddie started his own dog training business, Rodrigue Cajun K-9. “The boys work with me in the summer,” Eddie said.

I talked to Jay’s mom, Danielle, and asked her what she thought of Jay’s bull riding. “It can be a little nerve racking at times,” she said. “But he’s really good at it! I fully support him. If he told me he was done bull riding, that would be okay. We tried the baseball thing, but that didn’t get it. Sheep riding came along, and he was hooked!”

Next up for Jay is the MBR event in Lockney, Texas on February 22 and 23.

Jay and Eddie traveled to New York City and Madison Square Garden for the January 3, 4 and 5 2020 season opener of the PBR Unleash the Beast premier series. Miniature Bull Riding was featured each night, with Jay competing against fellow bull riders Ryder Carpenetti and Naijah Knight.

Jay has one more year in the MBR Senior Division. His bull riding future looks very promising. Jay summed it up by saying, “I’m looking forward to staying healthy and trying to win the World Finals.”

In round number two Cannon Cravens rode Salty Dawg for 86.25 points. This was a good ride from the 19 year old. Cannon is Mason Taylor’s cousin so they got the bull riding blood line.

Dylan Smith rode Mickey Mouse for 84 points. It was a good ride, but the get off.... not so much. Dylan jumped off, right in front of the bull and before the bullfighters could get there Dylan was thrown up in the air and one of the bull’s horns clipped his chin. Surprisingly after the bull was out Dylan was up and celebrating. Jose Vitor Leme rode Blonde Blizzard for 86 points.

Jose came so close last season to a PBR world title that I expect him to ride every one just like this one in control and on top. It was not the best ride but it was a round winner. Dakota Buttar and Total Feeds Bushwacked combined for 88 points. Dakota has been riding hunched over on bulls which is the wrong way but when Dakota straightens his back out he makes rides like these.

In the Championship round, Jose Vitor Leme rode Marquis Metal Work’s Gangster’s Wildside for 86.75 points. To be honest the only reason this score was that high was because of Jose. This is normally a great bull but Gangster’s Wild side did not have his day. Kaique Pacheco rode Big Bad for 87.50 points. This was a good ride by Pacheco there were only two people that went four for four and Kaique finished second. Mason Taylor picked Marquis Metal Works Bill The Butcher in the championship round after riding this bull in the 15/15 and winning on him.

Mason put on another clinic and scored his second 90 point ride of the year on this bull. None were better in the championship round than Jess Lockwood on Lil 2 Train for a whopping 91.75 points. Jess had to be feeling pretty good when he picked this bull, he is really rank. Every ride he cranks it to the left, but the winner of the event was Joao Ricardo Vieira. Joao rode Bezerk for 87.25 points. He was the only other rider to go a perfect four for four. This was a sweet ride and a confidence booster for the veteran. He may be 36 years old, but he still has it in him.

Mason Taylor rode With A Bang for 85.25 points. This was the first bull going to the right that I have seen Taylor on for a while because most of the time he draws bulls to the left. He received a good score that, in the end, helped him in the championship round. Colten Jesse rode Lester Gillis for 88.25 points. Colten has bucked off this bull twice but the bull did not have his best day.

Colten still got his job done. Cooper Davis rode Twinkle Toes for 87.75 points. This bull comes out one jump kicking over his head and spinning as hard as he can to the right. Davis handled him like a champ. Jess Lockwood rode JC’s Gangster for 86.75 points.

In round two Jess bucked off a bull that he should have spurred

the hair off of, so it was no surprise to see him dominate this bull. Matt Triplett had the rankest ride of them all scoring 88.75 points on Test Me. This bull has a lot of up and down to him and that’s why riders score so many points on him. It just looks awesome.

The major events that occur during the PBR season have been instrumental in the race to determine the World Champion for some time now, and 2020 will be no exception. In fact, those major events are even more important, and let us explain why.

At a two-day Unleash The Beast event a rider can earn a maximum of 140 points, and 180 points at a three-day event, while at a Major that jumps up to a maximum of 270 points. Winning a round at a Major will earn a rider

30 points, while a round win at a regular UTB event gives them 20 points.

There are four major events during the season, and the first stop of the year was one of those; the Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden, which was held – no surprise here – at Madison Square Garden. Reaping the benefits in a big way to start off his year was Joao Ricardo Vieira. He did not just win, he went four-for-four, gathering up 192 world point, not to mention that check for $109,000!

JR was second in the first round, split sixth and seventh in Round 2, tied for eleventh and twelfth in the third, and was fourth in the final round. His consistency got him that well-deserved victory.

Hot on his heels was fellow Brazilian Kaique Pacheco.

He also went four-for-four, and after the first event at the Garden was trailing Vieira by a mere 26.5 points. Two-time World Champ Jess Lockwood came down off his bull in the second round, but rode his other three, winning the final round with a big 91.75 score.

At the next event, the Chicago Invitational, the top two men switched places, with Pacheco taking over that early lead for the World title, bumping JR to second. But there are three more events on the UTB tour before the commencement of that next Major, and fans of JR will be quite happy about Major number two.

The Iron Cowboy will take place in sunny Southern California at the Staples Center. If history is any factor, this bodes well for Vieira. He has won a record-setting three Iron Cowboy events, four if you count Iron Cowboy Brazil, which he won in 2018.

Here in the States he won back-to-back years, in 2014 and 2015, and grabbed that title again last year at Staples Center. So, he is no stranger to the Iron Cowboy format, or to Staples. He will make his competition work for their respective spots in that event.

Some riders believe that the pressure is actually off a bit, considering that there is so much to win at the 15/15 Bucking Battles – 50 points to the winner – and the World Finals themselves, which offers up a possible 1040 points.

Others feel that in order to become the World Champion, you really need to win one of those Majors. Some riders took note of the fact that not winning a Major ended up being the deciding factor in that World title race, and not since J.B. Mauney in 2015 has a bull rider won that championship without winning a Major.

After Iron Cowboy, the other two Majors come after the break; Last Cowboy Standing in July, and the Music City Knockout in August. And as previously mentioned, we cannot forget those 15/15 Bucking Battles and the Finals.

But one thing is certain, the action will be fast, furious, and great watching!

The jury is still out on whether or not increasing the points available at those four big events will make a big impact.

Andre Silva Behind the Lens

For any of you PBR fans who attend the Velocity Tour events, it is certain that you have seen Andre Silva. If you are not sure, he would be the very tall and quick to smile Brazilian who always has a camera around his neck. Silva has been a photographer for the PBR since back in 2005, when he began working for PBR Brasil. Prior to that he worked as a photographer, journalist, and designer of the largest rodeo magazine in Brasil. But his interest in photography, and rodeo in particular, began earlier; in 1997.

“I took some photography courses, but I learned a lot by studying alone. After a few years I took more specific courses and participated in many workshops on the subject. I also took two international photography courses when I was in Brasil. I have always enjoyed learning by myself and especially creating my style and creating new things. Today I can say that I study daily, and more specifically about bull riding. I love to get to know the animals and the cowboys, so the result of the work is better.”

“It was that year that I received from my father a Sony Mavica FD7 camera. I didn’t like the present very much because at that time I only went around rodeos and was studying a technical computer course. At that time, I created the first photo coverage website in my region, the site called Arrastão Country.

Brasil is quite well-known for their bull riders, and it is no secret that whenever a new face appears here on the PBR tours, fans will more often than not be watching someone special. But unfortunately, that was not the case for Andre, as he readily admitted.

“I attended 3 different events on the same night with a floppy disk (3.5 inch),” Andre continued. “The next day I put the photos on this website, which at that time was the largest in my region. As I already liked rodeo, in 2002 I had my first magazine cover in Brasil and in 2003 I received the invitation to be a photographer of the biggest rodeo magazine in Brasil, Rodeo Country, where I worked for 3 years with film camera.”

But photography was not what he studied in school. The majority of the courses he took in Brasil were basic courses.

“My dream was to be a cowboy, but I was never good at riding bulls and was always very afraid. I trained for a while riding bulls but never participated in big events. I always joke that everyone who works around rodeo and is not a cowboy is a frustrated cowboy, like me!”

As previously mentioned, Andre was asked to join PBR Brasil in August of 2005, in preparation for their debut there in 2006. To say he was excited about that prospect was an understatement.

“When I got the call from PBR that they were opening its doors in Brasil, I was one of the first to be called to work.

I remember like it was yesterday. I quit my job at a publisher to earn 3 times less at the PBR. I slept for a while at the PBR Brasil office, it was my home. PBR’s first coffee maker, computer, and printer were my own. Many said that I was crazy about trading a great job for a company that was coming to Brasil, but I was always a fan of PBR. “As a kid I always watched all the videos and followed the pictures of PBR in the USA and I really knew the PBR was big and how much it could grow. Few people know this, but years before I was hired by PBR I got a tattoo with the PBR logo on my arm and when I received the invitation to work it was like a dream come true, which I am still living today!

“I really love to travel and see new places,” Andre told us. “I have a map of all the cities I’ve been to and mostly recorded by my cameras. I am grateful to God for the people he put in my life / career, especially the PBR Velocity Tour team. We are a family, people that I really admire and respect a lot and they have always welcomed me very well. I have friends in PBR that I see more than my family, including my brother and sister. People like these make me forget the people who did not welcome me. I love working with the PBR Velocity Tour.

These past few years, these people have made my weekends better. I’m not going to name anybody, but I really love these guys.”

While it is extremely difficult to get a card to be a photographer for the PBR, the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) is almost impossible. Although Silva’s focus has always been the PBR, he has also followed the PRCA, since he believes that it is the root of rodeo.

“I think this is where it all started, and I respect the history of the PRCA very much. One of my professional goals was to win the PRCA photographer card. I put this goal in my career when I looked at the rodeo pictures on my closet door, which I took from magazines and pasted on the door. I worked hard

to get the PRCA card and I am very proud to say that because, as you said when we spoke, it is not an easy goal. Whenever I have free weekends, I go to PRCA events.”

Some photographers prefer to shoot action photos, while others love candid shots. Then there are those who don’t really have a preference. That is not Andre. He definitely prefers those action shots.

“I think if you can show the emotions of an event in photos, that is the goal of every photographer. I always seek to know the animals and the cowboys who will be performing. Those who travel with me know that I am watching videos of bulls equal or more than a cowboy. I always thought that candid photos are cool, but really the action photos are the ones that catch my attention and it is from these action photos that I come across. That said, of course I do other work that is not action specific.”

Hobbies are things that escape most of those that travel the rodeo trail, and that is often the case for Silva. He does however, try to find a bit of down time to enjoy a few other things.

“Until a few years ago my hobby was taking pictures with film cameras and then developing the black and white photos in my house. Today my hobbies are being with my family and friends. As a Brazilian, I really like to barbecue and play soccer with the cowboys. I also went back to playing

basketball at the gym. I go to and twice a week I’m throwing balls into the basket.”

“This year completes 19 years of professional career as a rodeo photographer.”

Many of the Brazilian bull riders have ended up moving to the States. They find they are here most of the time anyway, and that type of constant travel is quite grueling. We wondered just where Andre now calls home.

I made reference to just how much travel is involved in attending these events. Well, to put it in another perspective, last year alone Andre traveled 32,000 miles, photographed at 48 events, and set foot in 26 states!

“In recent years I have only been working in the USA, as an official photographer of PBR Velocity Tour. Due to the busy schedule, I could not return to Brasil to work or to visit my family. The few opportunities I had, I preferred that my family came to visit me here in the U.S. I am really dedicated and working hard to make my place in the USA.

“I would like to publicize my social media (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter) @andresilvaphoto, and say that I am trying to record videos in English to bring a little more about my work to the Americans.”

“I love my work very much, and besides being a PBR professional photographer I am also a fan of the sport and its franchise. I usually say that I am in a daily dream and very happy. I want to thank everyone in the world that accompanies my work; my family and especially my wife, Patricia Silva, who abandoned her personal dreams to accompany me in my dream. She left everything behind and came to the U.S. just to be near me.

If you see this approachable man at any of the Velocity events, do take a moment to say hello. He is polite, humble, and hardworking, and deserves everything he has achieved thus far.

BullMania 2019 played out with some of the greatest intensity you can get in sports.

The long running New Year’s Eve Bull ride that takes over Klamath Falls, Oregon every year set up to be a great one. With a packed house and an extremely talented list of bull and saddle bronc riders, the conditions were perfect for Southeast Oregon to ring in the new year.

The real thrill developed on the bull riding side of the house while, during opening ceremonies, one could tell how intense the competition would become. With names like Cody Campbell, Jordan Spears and Levi Gray the talent was all there. On the bull power side of the fence, Julio Moreno and Howell Rodeo brought in some super talented animal athletes which included several regulars on the PBR tour as well as animals selected for the NFR.

Cody Campbell

The long round went down with some great performances by some of the top names at the event where Cody Campbell took the top spot with an 88.5, close behind Thor Hoefer put up an impressive 85-point ride. In the third hole, there was a tie between Levi Gray and Bodie Vaughan at 84.5 points while returning champion Alex Guzman put up an 83.5-point score. Finishing in the last payout spot for the long round was NFR qualifier and the number 6 man in the PRCA, Jordan Spears.

The real story came with young Andrew Fox. During the last section of bull riding Andrew was second to last to ride and finish the final section. The bull he drew jumped and kicked his way across the pen only affording Andrew a score in the low 60’s.

With the low score Andrew was offered a re-ride on the grounds that the animal did not perform to a level in which he had a fare opportunity for a score.

When the latch cracked on the final long round ride of the night it was a short trip. The big red bull made a quick turn back away from Justin’s hand tossing him back toward the chutes. Andrew Fox used good business sense to find himself in the short round with a shot at the big payout.

The conundrum quickly mounted for Andrew, with one more man out who happened to be Justin Rowell his traveling partner and his low 60-point score securing him a spot in the short round should he take it or not. If he takes the re-ride his score would be taken away and he would risk a buck off and missing the short round and a shot at the big money. On the other hand if he kept his score and his traveling partner Justin covered his bull and

Making what many would consider a very mature and business decision Andrew decided to keep his score. He did so on the grounds that he was pretty sure that the bull his traveling partner drew would win the battle and the odds were better if he banked on his low 60 mark holding up.

With the bull power being amped up for the short round, the odds of getting the job done were seriously lowered. Eight riders had a shot to cash in on the night. The first five outs in the final eight were short lived attempts. The power of the new level of bulls became obvious.

The number 5 man to make his attempt was again Andrew Fox, at the crack of the latch his bull made a strong move into Andrews hand. This strong move had pushed Andrew far to the outside and

looked to have Andrew bucked off. With a huge free arm move and some fancy spur adjustments Andrew refused to give up and managed to use his desperate moves to put himself back in the middle. What had appeared to be another buck off quickly swung the momentum back to the cowboy and, after 8 seconds, Andrew Fox was the only one so far to get one covered.

Andrew’s tenacious effort afforded him the second-high score of the night with 86 points. The odds were that his 86 would not be enough to win the event but with only 2 more riders left he had at least secured himself another good check.

The final two riders of the night still had a shot at winning the aggregate and with one of them being well known PBR athlete Cody Campbell holding the high score of the night, everyone was on the edge of their seat waiting to see what would happen.

Jesse Aitken would be the next to take his shot, his attempt would be short lived with a quick buck off. Last to ride would be Cody Campbell, with his 88.5 for his long round attempt, if Cody could hold on for 8-seconds he would essentially have the overall win. It

was not in the stars for Cody on this night, with a quick left-hand turn Cody found himself in the dirt.

Andrew Fox had conquered the beast and managed to stamp his name into BullMania history. A young man took the business and smart approach to his night and placed himself in position to cash in.

At the end of the night, the 2019 BullMania winner collected $5,140.00, a brand new Resistol Black Gold hat, a pair of Tony Lama boots, and a shiny new buckle.

In all BullMania, paid out $12,850.00 between the long round and the short round for bull riding while on the saddle bronc side a total of $6,650.00 was issued. Over New Year’s Eve BullMania paid out nearly $20,000.00 dollars in prize money. Not too shabby for a small northwest event!

We both sat down around the fire And he handed me his cup “My horse is tied out yonder,” He said, then he stood up

“Well,” I said and cleared my throat, “I guess I do just fine.

I work real hard and do my job.

This cowboy life is mine.”

I reflected on this cowboy life To ride my horse all day And camp at night beneath the stars It’s called the cowboy way

He stepped on over to the fire And gazed into the pot “I’d likely give a month’s wages For a plate of them beans, nice and hot”

“I’m talkin bout your purpose, There’s a reason why you’re here.

The Range Boss made you a cowboy.”

He answered very clear

As I sat there with my coffee Enjoying what I do I heard a rustling in the brush And a man came into view

“They ain’t for sale,” I said to him, “but you’re welcome to have what you want You look like you could use it You look a little gaunt.”

“As you go about the cowboy life, Enjoying what you do Spend some time with the Range Boss He’d like talk to you.”

He stopped outside the firelight His manners cowboy right “Hello, the camp,” he softly called Awaiting my invite

So, he helped himself to a plate of beans And sat back down to eat I watched him wolf his dinner down It must have been a treat

“He wants you to know that He loves you So much that He gave his own Son. Who died to pay the price for your sin Then heaven can be your home.”

“Welcome friend,” I told him And he strolled right up to me “My name is Jess, young fella, Can I share your hot coffee?”

When he was done, we both sat back To enjoy our cowboy brew He looked at me and began to talk About the things he knew

“But there’s more than just gettin’ saved from hell

He was a real old cowboy Deep lines creased his face His hat was worn and tattered But he wore a peaceful grace

“Young fella, you’re a real good cook, And I thank you for my meal.

So, while we sip our coffee I’d like to share what’s real”

“So tomorrow when you’re chasing cows And roaming across the land,

There was a wild rag round his neck His coat was torn, and tattered His chaps were worn but still intact He looked to be life-battered

“Did you ever wonder why you’re here?

And what you’re supposed to do?

Or do you just go on day by day With no purpose in your stew?”

Son, He’s loaded you for bear He made you a real live cowboy With special gifts to share.”

Spend some time with the Range Boss on high

And ask Him to show you His plan.”

With that I stood and strolled to the fire I felt all he said was square I turned around to thank him But he was no longer there!
