For Platinum Nova Cigars, being recognized by Cigar Journal as the Best Boutique Brand in the Dominican Republic for 2024-2025 during the recently held InterTabac trade show in Dortmund, Germany, is the result of a long journey, filled with ups and downs, that is now bearing fruit. āAlthough itās for Platinum Nova Cigars, itās really for everyone who has believed in us from the beginning,ā says its CEO, Leonor Abzaradel.

The Path of Women
The InterTabac Trade Fair, the largest in the world, concluded in Dortmund, Germany. This event serves as the backdrop for one of the most anticipated occasions of the year: the Cigar Trophy Awards Ceremony, where the international magazine Cigar Journal presents annual awards based on votes from consumers themselves. This 2024, the awards recognize the top 24 brands, cigars, values, boutique brands, accessories, lounges, among other categories.
There are still few women leading companies or personally earning these awards, such as Maya Selva, who was honored this time for her career in the tobacco world. Another one is Leonor Abzaradel, who appears on the cover of this edition and, in her role as CEO of Platinum Nova Cigars, received the trophy for Best Boutique Brand from the Dominican Republic.
Leo āas she is affectionately called in this industryā is, along with other women forging their paths today, a true inspiration for those seeking a place in the sector. Since taking over the company six years ago, she has worked tirelessly to establish commercial relationships, but most importantly, human connections, which have contributed to positioning this boutique brand among aficionados.
Her feminine touch is unique and personal, but above all, authentic; Leo is one of a kind. She not only promotes but has also been the face of a brand that has
earned its place in the market and has woven a network of female enthusiasts across the United States, supporting and promoting projects like SOTL Global Movement āled by Dr. Anastasia Psomiadiā by integrating ambassadors, influencers, and female-owned brands and spaces into her events.
Her photograph, trophy in hand, is a powerful image that drives change and reminds us that we must strive for gender equity and respond to what this industry demands: the vision, guidance, and management of women who think, feel, and blend tobaccos in ways that enrich what we currently smoke.
Like other successful women who have shared their stories through our publications, Leo is a clear example of the role that all of them play today in transforming an industry where they increasingly perform with confidence and support. They are the ones who will make the tobacco world a more diverse, complex, and, in a word: better.
She states that there is still much work ahead at Platinum Nova Cigars and remains completely focused and engaged in the companyās development plans, which she has mapped out clearly. Now more than ever, as new challenges arise and greater responsibilities come, from her perspective as CEO, āit allows me to continue demonstrating to women that if I can do it, we all can.ā
Congratulations!
Mechelle Merkerson
In Love with Tobacco
On her 23rd birthday, Mechelle Merkerson asked her father for a unique gift: the knowledge of how to smoke a cigar. That experience ignited a passion not only for cigars but for the rich culture surrounding them. This moment sparked a journey that would transform her love for tobacco into a thriving profession.
Born in Florida, Mechelle is an accomplished professional in marketing, communications, business, and hospitality. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree that integrates all these disciplines, enabling her to share her expertise through the platform Cigars with M.
I felt a clear calling from the Lord to share what Iāve learned with more people who might be on the same path.ā
RaĆŗl Melo
As her appreciation for cigars deepened, so did her understanding of their history and cultural significance. Mechelle explains, āI felt a clear calling from the Lord to share what Iāve learned with others who might be on the same path.ā This led to the launch of Cigars with M on July 5, 2022. Since then, she has committed herself to extensive research and continuous learning, ensuring that her content remains both engaging and informative.
To date, Cigars with M has produced over 117 episodes, reaching nearly 30,000 impressions monthly across six social media platforms. Mechelleās influence extends beyond her showāshe is featured in multiple magazines and serves as Co-Chair of Membership for Women of PCA. She has also partnered with key industry organizations like the Premium Cigar Association (PCA), Cigar Rights of America (CRA), Boveda, and numerous cigar lounges and accessory brands to broaden her impact.
Her success is supported by a skilled team, including John Sands, Media Director at Cigars with āMā and Creative Director For Shutter Sexy Photography; Reginald āReggā Smith, Cinematographer at Areginalmedia, whose expertise has been integral to the platformās growth.
In addition to her media ventures, Mechelle created a digital content calendar designed specifically for retailers and cigar professionals. This planner not only highlights important industry dates and organizations but also provides practical strategies to enhance social media presence. Featuring motivational quotes and organizational tools, the calendar is available for purchase at www.momentswithmechelle.com.
Mechelleās passion for mentorship has evolved into offering brand consulting services to retailers, cigar companies, and accessory brands. As she continues to expand her influence, she remains committed to reshaping how cigars are perceived worldwide, partnering with various industries to create unique cigar pairing experiences.
Her vision for the future includes developing resources to help retailers strengthen their social media strategies and better connect with consumers. A key part of this vision is fostering a mentorship program that pairs emerging cigar business owners with seasoned industry veterans, promoting diversity and inclusion in an industry that thrives on community.
While at the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) trade show in 2019 it was an upand-coming star in the United States, Platinum Nova Cigars now shines brightly and is entering Europe through the front door, a market it has gradually begun to penetrate. āNow there are no limits, and our cigars will reach the rest of the world.ā
Leonor Abzaradel, Platinum Nova Cigarās CEO.
According to Leonor Abzaradel, Leo, the brand has crossed borders thanks to the hard work of a very dedicated team, both in the Dominican Republic and in the U.S. āThis award makes us all proud because we have always believed in our potential as a brand, and we are very satisfied with the different lines we have produced so far.ā
As Platinum Nova Cigars celebrates 15 years in the tobacco industry and nearly six years as CEO, Leo expresses her personal excitement, but first speaks about the dedication of all the people who work alongside her and manage the processes that ensure each cigar reaches the consumer. āWe are on the right track, with the certainty that recognition always comes at some point in life.ā
Aware of the importance of sharing her knowledge and continuing to learn about each of the activities she is involved in, she states, āI extend this recognition to all my friends, to my family, and to those who have always supported me unconditionally and celebrate Platinum Nova Cigarsā growth alongside me. It makes me feel like I am on the right path with my vision for this company, and that everything is falling into place.ā
With this in mind, for the future, the brand sees this as a ālook at me, here I am,ā but in reality itās āhere we are and weāre not going anywhere, because weāve come to stay. We have a good product, and with great respect for what other companies do, we will continue to focus on our own.ā
I extend this recognition to all my friends, to my family, and to those who have always supported me unconditionally and celebrate Platinum Nova Cigarsā growth alongside me. It makes me feel like I am on the right path with my vision for this company, and that everything is falling into place.ā
This new landscape has emerged in a relatively short time, and it is important to maintain teamwork under the direction taken: āto keep progressing, listen to the consumer, strengthen ties with retailers, and ensure everyone is happy with what we do. Itās about growing together, not just with retailers, but also in the trust of those who prefer us,ā Leo expresses.
āItās a horizon that has expanded. I feel like Iāve entered with Platinum Nova Cigars through the front door, on a red carpet, representing a brand that works with quality and love. The most beautiful thing is that we owe it all to the consumers, who voted for us and, along with their support, make us feel that they want and expect more... And we will definitely have many surprises for them.ā
A DOMINICAN BRAND
Dominican identity has been part of Platinum Nova Cigars from the very beginning, ābecause we decided to start production in that land of spectacular tobaccos that we all love,ā continues Leo. In fact, 22 of the brandās 26 lines include different varieties grown in the country āthat opened its doors to us,ā and where the company contributes to the economy, both through the purchase of supplies and by generating jobs.
She proudly adds that Dominican tobacco ādepending on its agingā allows for the creation of blends that result in clean smoking experiences that highlight their various profiles. āSo we have the commitment to represent the Dominican Republic with high-quality products that we share with the rest of the world, so that people fall in love with, recognize, and value its origin.ā
With that foundation, Platinum Nova Cigars was established in Florida, USA, in 2015, but its expansion throughout the U.S. began four years later, with Leo joining as CEO. They practically started by going door-to-door to shops āoffering tastings and talks in exchange for a space to get knownā until they found the business and online distribution channels that allowed them to consolidate.
This enabled them, despite the difficulties and challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, to begin penetrating other markets and finally, in 2023, to set up and operate their own factory: Terra Nova Cigar Factory, in Tamboril, the Cigars World Capital, as Dominicans proudly call this city, the capital of the municipality in the province of Santiago.
During a visit to the site, the first thing that catches the eye is the building, painted in the aquamarine color that distinguishes the brand. During the workday, men and women are focused at their tables, but also happy, wearing the companyās shirt āliterallyā and willingly explaining their tasks: the careful stripping, selection, and preparation of the leaves, which then go to the bunchers and rollers, who shape the cigars, subjected to various quality controls before being ringed.
DURING A VISIT TO THE SITE, THE FIRST THING THAT CATCHES THE EYE IS THE BUILDING, PAINTED IN THE AQUAMARINE COLOR THAT DISTINGUISHES THE BRAND.
Here, they aim to establish a new model of supervision in which there isnāt a foreman, but someone who provides trust to all staff so they can give their best effort without pressure. āBecause when things are done with love and passion, they always turn out better,ā says Rey, a well-known cigar maker in this region, which has promoted the recognition of tobacco and cigars as Cultural Heritage of the country.
They also allow us to visit the Aging Room and take a look at the special tobaccos aged since 1999, which will likely be used for Platinum Nova Cigarsā upcoming Limited Editions. In fact, following the recognition received, Leo informs that a launch is being prepared for next year.
OVER TIME, THE BRANDāS PORTFOLIO HAS ACCUMULATED LIMITED EDITIONS, LINES, AND COLLECTIONS OF CIGARS WITH A DIVERSE RANGE OF STRENGTHS AND BLENDS, ALSO INCLUDING TOBACCOS FROM COUNTRIES LIKE COLOMBIA, ECUADOR, THE UNITED STATES, MĆXICO, AND NICARAGUA.
Attendees enjoy the variety of the brandās cigars during the Intertabac Trade Show.
As a result, they are now enjoying acceptance among enthusiasts, who have allowed them to carve out a place and now be recognized in the global cigar industry. āWeāre making a lot of noise, and definitely our new consumer friends understand that we have a good product, that we work seriously, and that we respect quality. Thatās why we are an ultra-premium vintage cigar brand,ā says Leo, who always offers a genuine smile and shares her good spirit with anyone who approaches.
NOTE:
* In 2019, the current PCA Trade Show was known as the International Premium and Cigar Pipe Retailers (IPCPR).

Leading Ladies in the Cigar Industry in California
Myesha Michelle
Aficionada with over 20 years of experience in premium tobacco consumption, Myesha Michelle is the founder and President of Sisters of the Leaf āan organization dedicated to women who smoke cigars or are interested in the communityā and a graduate of the Cigar Roller Academy in Los Angeles, California, USA.
ā What can you tell us about Sisters of the Leaf?
ā I established and lead this organization with the purpose of empowering women in the cigar community. We organize events, workshops, and networking opportunities for enthusiasts, as well as develop a strong online presence āthrough social media platformsā to connect and engage with our members.
ā What has been your experience as a student at the Cigar Rolling Academy in Los Angeles?
ā After spending several months as an apprentice, I am now an alumni. I have gained considerable knowledge and a deep respect for both tobacco and the rich culture surrounding the art of cigar rolling.
This experience has not only improved my skills but has allowed my passion for this craft to shine through the cigars I create. I sincerely hope that the dedication and love I put into my work are evident in the final product, as each cigar crafted is a reflection of my journey. I am excited to continue growing in this beautiful art form.
Currently, I am seeking a Masterās in Techniques and Craftsmanship of Cigar Rolling, gaining more knowledge about tobacco varieties, their blends, and quality control.
ā You were the Producer of a documentary about cigars...
ā Indeed, I successfully produced Smoke Big, a captivating documentary about the cigar industry and its scene in Los Angeles, which is now available on Prime Video. I handled all aspects of production, including research, conducting interviews, filming, and final editing during post-production.
ā Tell us about the transition from enthusiast to expert in cigars, and your knowledge of the premium tobacco industry.
ā I have gained extensive experience by smoking and handling various Cuban and domestic cigars, developing a deep understanding of their different flavor profiles and pairings. In fact, I actively participate in exploring various cigar launches, which keeps me updated on industry trends.
For over seven years, I lived in Miami, Florida, where I was able to meet and create substantial connections in the industry. I am familiar with lounges and establishments in major metropolitan cities across the country, such as Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Oakland, San Diego, and others in South Carolina.
Ben Wills
Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Ben Wills graduated from Clark Atlanta University (one of the educational institutions created for the African American community after 1964, HBCU). She trained as a Technical Designer in the fashion industry and then transitioned to Public Relations, becoming a Talent Coordinator in the entertainment sector.
In the Tobacco Industry, serving as brand content curator and social media manager allowed her to create her own lifestyle brand, āleveraging my experience in public relations and entertainment production to elevate a consumer bridge between lifestyle, retail, and cigar brands.ā
ā How do you participate in the cigar community?
ā Thanks to retail partnerships with Smallbatch Cigars in Orange County, California, for Black History Month, we have been able to incorporate, promote, and sell African American-owned brands on a massive scale. Additionally, media connections through Boveda Unbox Live and JR Cigars have helped highlight outstanding women in the industry during Womenās History Month.
I became the first brand content curator for JR Cigars; media partner for the Procigar Festival held in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and created the inaugural Sisters in Smoke Brunch to offer, support, and promote women-led brands among consumers in a fellowship environment.
ā What motivated you to start this?
ā I have a curious personality. Iām the type of person who, when challenged, will pursue what someone says doesnāt exist or canāt be done. If you tell me the social norm is āX, Y, and Z,ā I will show you āL, M, N, O, Pā¦ā
Initially, I felt that the women in the industry I met had a powerful yet subtle presence. That sparked the desire to bring them into the spotlight, rather than letting them remain in the shadows. I wanted others to hear their voices, recognize them, and celebrate their presence. The same goes for my support in trying to introduce mass consumers to more African American-owned brands through my retail partnership with Smallbatch Cigars.
ā Do you remember any impactful experiences?
ā Two years ago, during the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) trade show, Antione Reid from Deep Cuts Live helped me realize the crazy vision of creating a viral moment with a group of titan women in the industry: Nirka Reyes from De los Reyes Cigars; Raquel Quesada from Quesada Cigars; Leonor Abzaradel from Nova Cigars, and Desiree Sylver from Drunk Chicken Cigars.
I wanted to showcase the unity among Sisters of the Leaf, mutual respect, and their respective offerings. I believed that both consumers and the industry needed to be reminded that these leaders are just as beloved as some others; that specialty media should seek out their booths, greet them, and talk about their products. Seeing them together was a pleasure. I will never forget their generosity of presence and patience; a gesture I will always cherish.
ā Since you started, how has the industry changed?
ā I love that more and more people are recognizing the female giants in the room; that really wasnāt a global thing before. Itās very rewarding to share space with your peers, as some are sources of inspiration and others, allies. I would say that if you offer others the best of yourself, they will respond in kind. I am proof of that.
Lorena GarduƱo
Also known as Lorena Puro Fuego, Lorena GarduƱo is a Mexican born in Cuernavaca, Morelos, who, in addition to being an entrepreneur in Private Sector Investigation Business (fraud), is a mother of three young adults and a Certified Cigar Sommelier (International Cigar Sommelier Association), Cigar Roller, and Sister of the Leaf in Southern California.
She firmly believes that she has received the gift of the Fruit of the Spirit: āI have the ability to stand up for what I believe, face adversity, and overcome any obstacle.ā
ā What do you think about the community and your initiatives?
ā I have been part of the community of women smokers of premium tobacco for over a decade, but I have smoked cigars for much longer... In fact, both my grandmother and my father were enthusiasts.
On this journey, I have met some strong and solid women in the industry who motivated me to organize cigar-focused events. In early 2014, I partnered with my fun companion, Joy Caldwell, and we ventured to host our first event a year later. It was a success! So together we organized other gatherings that brought women from all walks of life with different lifestyles. Their response and the demand were extraordinary, so we called our duo Sexy Ashes Aficionadas / Cigar Hostesses in Southern California.
ā What motivates you to carry out these activities?
ā The curiosity of women who want to know and learn more about cigars. I realized that many are powerful in some way, whether in their field or through their lifestyle, so they just needed a place to come together.
The idea is for women to unite, share, and participate in a sort of convention that brings us together once a year to discuss how to make a difference by contributing to a good cause within or outside the cigar industry. Humanitarian work...
ā Describe a memorable experience.
ā As I am also a Cigar Sommelier, event host, and Sister of the Leaf, I had the pleasure of setting up a rolling table at Sylvester Stalloneās house, who had Arnold Schwarzenegger as a special guest. I sat with both of them after dinner and rolled, lit, and smoked a cigar with them. That was my fatherās wish, and I was able to experience it in his name! It was a moment of great significance for me.
ā Do you think the cigar industry has changed?
ā It has changed a lot since I started, and I believe it is largely due to us, who began this movement over a decade ago. We were not afraid to break barriers to enter what was considered āthe manās world,ā and we did it with grace, style, and a lot of confidence... We have come to stay, and our community continues to grow and strengthen.
I would say that opportunities donāt just happen; you create them. So we must continue to inspire and draw inspiration from the women in the tobacco industry. Each one, being their own movement, because everything we have always wanted is on the other side of fear.
Lucretia Lee-Arceneaux
Learning and Smoking
The intricate process of cigar making captivated this woman, who entered the industry due to her appreciation for the art and culture surrounding this tradition. Thus, Lucretia Lee-Arceneaux soon became a Certified Cigar Sommelier and later a tobacco roller, connecting with the tactile and artistic aspects of this craft.
Her educational background is focused on Engineering, specifically in transmission technologies and media; this technical foundation allowed her to become the Head of Transmission IT at iHeartMedia and a Streaming Engineer at Netflix. However, her passion for cigars and the rich cultural tapestry they represent led her to become a Certified Cigar Sommelier Tobacconist, Cigar Roller and Judge for the Cigar Slow Smokeing Championship (CSWC). āMy career is a combination of technology, media, and craftsmanship,ā she says.
For Lucretia, developing advanced digital streaming solutions at iHeartMedia was particularly exciting, as it involved innovating ways to integrate streaming technologies with traditional radio platforms. At Netflix, she participates in projects to optimize content delivery networks and improve service quality on a global scale; a thrilling challenge due to its impact on user experience worldwide.
Her role at Netflix is to ensure that millions of subscribers receive the best possible viewing experience by enhancing the efficiency and reliability of streaming services. āI am very excited to work at the forefront of technology in the entertainment segment, whose constant evolution always presents challenges and opportunities.ā
I imagine a world where womenās contributions are celebrated, and we can enjoy cigars alongside men, on equal footing.ā
She believes that during the early years of her career, as an apprentice, she received invaluable guidance and insights from experienced professionals, which accelerated her training and adaptation in a highly technical field. Now, as a mentor, she seeks to give back by guiding young men and women in radio and technology, fostering a support network that empowers the next generation of engineers.
āIn the same way,ā she continues, āI would like to express my gratitude to mentors like Will Green, also known as Iron Lungz, from Iron Class Connections Consulting. His guidance and teachings have been fundamental in helping many people, including myself, navigate the complexities of the cigar industry. His passion and dedication are vital to cultivating a knowledgeable and respectful cigar community.ā
For all these reasons, Lucretia asserts that curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to learn and adapt continuously have been crucial. āBuilding strong relationships within my professional networks and as an enthusiast has opened doors and provided support throughout this varied career.ā
SHE SHARES THAT HER INTEREST IN BECOMING A CERTIFIED CIGAR SOMMELIER AND ROLLER AROSE FROM HER FASCINATION WITH THE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND TRADITION BEHIND THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS.
ATTRACTION TO CIGARS
She shares that her interest in becoming a Certified Cigar Sommelier Tobacconist and Roller arose from her fascination with the craftsmanship and tradition behind the manufacturing process. Additionally, āparticipating as a Judge in the CSWC added another layer to my passion. The competition emphasizes patience, precision, and an intimate understanding of combustion and draw in a cigar.ā
Being a Judge at this event requires a refined palate and a keen eye for detail, qualities she will continue to perfect through practice and study. āIt is immensely rewarding to observe and evaluate the skill and dedication of the participants, who share my love for cigars. This activity has connected me with a global community that respects this art form.ā
INVOLVEMENT WITH SOTL
Lucretia expresses that being a member of the SOTL Global Movement is profoundly significant, as it is not just about enjoying tobacco. The idea is to foster a welcoming space for women in a traditionally male-dominated scene, promoting inclusion and respect.
āThrough my participation in this movement and my professional qualifications, I hope to inspire more women to explore and excel in the premium tobacco industry. The goal is to help change perceptions and foster a more diverse community, where everyoneās contributions are valued equally,ā she adds.
āI see a promising future for women in the cigar industry, with more of them becoming leaders, influencers, and creators. The industry is gradually embracing diversity, enriching the community and expanding the market. I imagine a world where womenās contributions are celebrated, and we can enjoy cigars alongside men, on equal footing.ā
Mel Lashay
With a Vibrant and Entrepreneurial Spirit
Founder and creator of various projects focused on the tobacco world, including Cigar Queens of the Midwest and Cigar Kings of the Midwest, Melissa Lashay Whitfield ābetter known as Mel or Mel Lashayā is also the owner and operator of M. Lashayās Alluring Smoke.
Originally from and always residing on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, she is the youngest of four sisters and currently plays the roles of wife, mother of three, and grandmother of one. Her professional background is primarily in healthcare, with over 20 years of experience.
A PERSONAL BRAND
M.Lashayās Alluring Smoke was born thanks to her husband. In 2017, she assisted him in launching his own cigar brand, and during the process, she fell in love with the leaf. She learned so much about cigars and the culture surrounding them that, once his business was up and running, he encouraged her to create her own venture.
Mel recalls moments during private events when sales were slow, but everything changed when she lit a cigar and began to enjoy it. On one occasion, an older woman with no experience approached her and said, āI want you to show me how to smoke a cigar because the way you do it is captivating.ā
That moment left a mark on her heart, and since she already had the M.Lashay brand āwhich started as a line of nail polishes and skincare productsā she decided to complement the name with the phrase āAlluring Smoke,ā alluding to a mysterious or seductive smoking experience. Since then, she has been producing her premium cigars, called 8748, in a small factory in EstelĆ, Nicaragua.
I am the life of any party, I set my own tone, and I carry that with me wherever I go.ā
RECOGNITION FOR WOMEN
Believing that women-owned businesses do not receive the recognition they deserve in the cigar industry, she launched Cigar Queens of the Midwest in 2023. This weekend event aims to showcase what she and many others are doing within the tobacco community. āBut people donāt know, and thatās why itās important for us to be visible...ā
Additionally, this event pays tribute to the Midwest, where she is from, and serves as a platform for women in the area. During the planning stages, the event received full support from the SOTL Global Movement. In its inaugural edition, it brought together representatives from all women-owned lounges, brand owners, founders of cigar groups, podcast hosts, and influencers under one roof.
This year, it took place from October 11 to 13, and the original concept included the participation of men under the title Cigar Kings of the Midwest.
ā How do you see the future of the cigar industry for women?
ā What we have achieved in this community is worthy of recognition! Women, as a whole, bring a different vibe to everything we do. We turn houses into homes and nurture or protect in different ways... so I see us changing the game in tobacco culture because smoking is not just for men.
ā What changes would you like the SOTL Global Movement to bring to the industry?
ā Honestly, I believe theSOTL GM has accomplished a lot in the cigar world in general. It has made it easier for enthusiasts to sit together and have conversations, building lasting relationships and opportunities to expand their knowledge, to name just a few experiences I have witnessed firsthand. I would encourage them to continue this work because it truly works.
ā Tell us about three characteristics of yours that add value to the cigar world.
ā First, I am very loyal to those I love... and my love for cigars has inspired so many ideas that I feel I have contributed to expanding the tobacco community as a whole. Being loyal to the world of premium tobacco has allowed me to organize events that highlight the businesses of both women and men.
I would also mention dedication; once I set out to do something, I focus on that task until itās accomplished. Finally, I would say I am vibrant. Those who know me or have spent time with me know that my personality is very bright, loud, and full of energy... I am the life of any party, I set my own tone, and I carry that with me wherever I go.
On one occasion, an older woman with no experience approached her and said, āI want you to show me how to smoke a cigar because the way you do it is captivating.ā
Stagg Junior Batch #2...
Intensity and Exceptional Flavor
Michel Texier
ā¶Name: Stagg Junior Batch #2.
ā¶Company: Sazerac Company Inc.
ā¶Distillation: Buffalo Trace Distillery.
ā¶Classification: Straight Bourbon.
ā¶Release: August 2013.
ā¶ABV: 64.35% (128.35 proof).
ā¶Age: NAS (attributed a minimum of 7 years).
ā¶Mashbill: Unknown.
ā¶Color: Burnt amber.
The notes on the bottle indicate that the bourbon is aged for āalmost a decade,ā although in 2017, Buffalo Trace confirmed it to be 7 years. This is a younger version of the widely acclaimed George T. Stagg, with a different flavor profile as it shares the same mashbill, but unlike the original, the distillery is not as precise with barrel locations and āobviouslyā does not age it as long.
George T. Stagg is a bourbon on the top five lists for many enthusiasts and is part of the annual release of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC). Stagg Jr. appeared in 2013 and has continued with small batches at varying alcohol levels, always under the concept of Cask Strength. With the most recent release, Batch number 18, the designation āJrā has been removed from the label, now simply called Stagg.
Nose: At first impression, there is a strong perception of alcohol, given its Cask Strength characteristic, but after a few minutes, notes of raisins, caramel, chocolate, and citrus emerge, which linger throughout the appreciation of the spirit as it interacts with the environment.
Palate: Very intense. Subtle notes of raisins and citrus mix everywhere but are somewhat overshadowed by the intensity of the alcohol. Unlike other highend bourbons with high alcohol content, where we appreciate a spiced palate without intensity, this case is quite the opposite: a lot of intensity with a low range of spices, making it appear much less complex than it really is.
With a unique flavor profile and slight differences in each batch, only consumer appreciation will determine which of its versions reaches a higher level.ā
Finish: A strong dose of pepper dominates the initial appreciation, almost like accidentally biting into a peppercorn, and after this peak of spiciness, the intensity lingers a bit. Paradoxically, this intensity is pleasant once the initial excess is overcome, providing a sweet and lasting finish rounded out with elements of burnt brown sugar, caramel, and dark chocolate.
Commentary: While we are seeing more labels presenting uncut bourbon and other whiskies, Stagg Jr. remains exceptional and has become my favorite among the wide existing offerings. As it hits the market before the annual release of George T. Stagg, each new batch of Stagg Jr. serves as a prelude to what its older brother will be. With a unique flavor profile and slight differences each time, only consumer appreciation will determine which of its versions reaches a higher level.
Dewarās 15ā¦
A Blend of Integrated Flavors
Diego Urdaneta
Perhaps Dewarās isnāt the most outstanding blended whisky āat least for meā but it has been on the market forever, especially with the famous (and infamous) White Label. However, in recent years, Iāve seen more of their aged products, including the one at hand.
This 15-year expression is made from malt and grain whiskies aged for at least the stated period, which are then blended and left to rest for six months in oak casks, though it does not specify what they previously contained.
Although all the whiskies are aged at their respective distilleries, the finishing is done at Dewarās Aberfeldy, located in Highland Perthshire, Scotland.
Nose: It feels as basic as one would expect from a relatively aged whisky, with aromas of vanilla, melon, banana, apple, and orange. There is also a slightly floral note.
Palate: Very smooth, but not as rich as on the nose: sourdough, butter, vanilla, and caramel, but also softer fruit notes.
ā¶Distillation: Dewarās Aberfeldy Distillery.
ā¶Name: 15-Year-Old Blend Whisky.
ā¶Brand: Dewarās.
ā¶Origin: Scotland.
ā¶Age: 15 years.
ā¶Price: $47.00 USD.
Retrohale/Finish: Apples and melon (green melon?).
Rating: 6.5 on the t8ke scale.
Conclusion: Although Iām not a fan of blended whiskies, Dewarās 15 feels much better and richer than the 12-year version. The flavors are more integrated, and itās a more pleasant experience, especially with ice.
Most of these types of spirits āat least in my experienceā are consumed more for their price than their age. While a Monkey Shoulder can be acquired for a similar price, I consider it to be better, even though it doesnāt contain grain whisky. But, well... thatās also a subjective matter.
