WELCOME TO THE STUDENT SUCCESS AND ENGAGEMENT FACULTY HANDBOOK!

We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to all faculty members who play an integral role in shaping the academic experience and fostering a supportive environment for learners. This handbook has been developed to provide you with a wealth of information and resources that will empower you to effectively engage with and assist our diverse learner population

As faculty members, you are at the forefront of Humber’s educational mission, guiding and inspiring students on their academic journey This handbook is designed to be your trusted companion, offering insights, resources, and practical guidance on a wide range of topics related to student services Whether you're seeking information on career and student success advising, student well-being, accessible learning services, or campus resources, you'll find valuable tools within these pages to enhance your ability to connect with and support our students

We are excited to include Humber’s Student Success and Retention Framework which was developed in by the Student Success and Retention Committee in consultation with students. The Framework utilizes Lizzio’s 5 Senses of Student Success mapped onto a student success timeline and is intended to support the development

this fall with specific projects in several Faculties and will continue to roll out As a faculty member you can start to consider your work from this perspective and contemplate how your current practice contributes to student success

ACCESSIBLE LEARNING ACCESSIBLE LEARNING SERVICES SERVICES

The Accessible Learning Services (ALS) team works with learners with disabilities to promote self-determination and self-empowerment and enhance inclusive learning at the Polytechnic The team offers information and training sessions to faculty on the provision of accommodations and the importance of equitable access to learning environments for learners Learners may be referred as appropriate to internal and external services including but are not limited to assistive technology training, learning strategy support as well as ADHD Coaching

COMMON ACCESSIBILITY BARRIERS IN LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Learners with mental health conditions and learning disabilities represent more than half of the learners registered with ALS. In addition to mental health conditions and learning disabilities, it is important to keep in mind that learners may be experiencing a wide variety of other disabilities.

We encourage faculty to plan for and expect learners with disabilities to be enrolled in their courses At the Polytechnic, over 30% of learners self-identify as living with one or more disabilities and 14% of learners at the Polytechnic register with ALS for accommodations Common barriers encountered by learners include but are not limited to, timed assessments (quizzes, tests and exams) as well as the need for flexibility with respect to assignment due dates and having to take notes during lectures Faculty can take a proactive approach by implementing flexible learning and Universal Design practices in their courses such as posting course materials and lecture notes in advance, providing flexibility with respect to assignment due dates, and making recording of lectures available to learners Additional tips and resources are available on the Innovative Learning EDI Curriculum Toolkit and SWEL's Thriving in the Classroom Toolkit

Meeting 1:1 with a learner with disabilities can support the learner with clarifying course content and/or expectations for assessments

ACCOMMODATION LETTERS

Learners can register with ALS year-round. To register, learners meet with a professionally trained Accessibility Consultant who assesses whether the learner is encountering disabilityrelated barriers in the learning environment. Faculty should expect to receive Accommodation Letters throughout the semester and academic year. Additional supports that may be recommended after a learner registers with ALS

The Accommodation Letter outlines accommodations a learner requires, such as additional time for tests and exams and/or extensions on assignments, to fully participate in the learning environment Faculty seeking general assistance or with questions pertaining to implementing accommodations in their courses can connect with the ALS team member listed on the accommodation letter

HUMBER POLYTECHNIC FACULTY

Faculty receive an email notification alerting them to view Accommodation Letters on the ALS Faculty Portal. Alternatively, learners can choose to manage distribution of their Accommodation Letter to faculty independently In this case, the Accommodation Letter will not be available on the ALS Faculty Portal

UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH-HUMBER FACULTY

Faculty receive Accommodation Letters via an email from the Faculty Support Officer or from the learner directly Accommodation Letter are not available on the ALS Faculty Portal

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING

Learners in Work Integrated Learning placement receive a Field Experience/Placement Accommodation Letter Accommodation letters are provided to the program by the learner or Accessibility Consultant and are not available on the ALS Faculty Portal

Student Learning Services (SLS) provides academic support to learners through different modes of engagement intended to support in-class curriculums We collaborate with faculty and learners to make a positive impact on the learning experience, inside and outside the classroom Student Learning Services seeks to remove barriers for Humber and GuelphHumber's diverse population of learners by working with them to encourage critical thinking and independent learning

PEER ASSISTED LEARNING SUPPORT (PALS)

Provides peer-lead programming to support learners as follows:

CRLA certified Peer Tutors offer up to 3 hours of free tutoring in various courses

Peer Leaders offer engaging group study sessions for challenging courses

Peer Coaches provide tips & tricks in managing and navigating post-secondary life Learners registered with Accessible Learning Services can access Note Taking Services

MATH & WRITING CENTRE

Provides free tutoring to all Humber and Guelph-Humber learners:

Math tutors offer help with any math-related topic including, but not limited to, technical math, business math, statistics, physics, and calculus

Writing tutors provide writing support including, but not limited to, grammar, essay development, research skills, business writing, English as a Second Language support, and citing sources

Engineering tutors provide oneone-one and group tutorial sessions to support Bachelor of Engineering degree learners with math and physics courses.

In addition to our regular learning supports, Student Learning Services also offers:

Class Visits: Our team is available for class visits to talk with learners about the learning support services available at the Polytechnic

In-Class Tutoring: Faculty can request an In-Class Peer Tutor for their courses In-Class Tutors offer one-on-one tutoring assistance to learners during the class without disrupting the faculty member or other learners

Math Workshops: Learners can attend our focused workshops to become familiar with the BAII+ calculator, important statistics topics, and specific tutorials or attend a drop-in session for business and technical math

Peer Tutor & Pass Leader Recruitment: We are continuously recruiting high achieving learners who are interested in working on campus and giving back to their peers by sharing their academic skillset Faculty are encouraged to reach out to us if there is a learner in their classes who would be an excellent Peer Tutor or PASS Leader

Writing Workshops: Conversation Circle and Conversation 1-on-1 offer an opportunity for students to practice their skills, and our APA and Academic Integrity workshops supports academic writing.

TESTING TESTING SERVICES SERVICES

Testing Services offers a quiet, controlled, and barrier-free space for learners to write their tests outside of the classroom. All seats within Testing Services are booked through an appointment-based process.

We serve learners who are registered with Accessible Learning Services, and facilitate extra time, access to assistive technology, or a distraction minimized environment. Missed and conflict testing is also available for learners where capacity allows.

All learners can schedule their tests through Blackboard or CourseLink.

First, Faculty must upload their exam to our Testing Services portal on Blackboard or CourseLink. Once the exam is received and reviewed by our team, the learner will be able to view and book their appointment

Career & Student Success Advisors (CSSAs): Our Career & Student Success Advisors can help guide your academic and career journey and connect you to on-campus resources and support services. Using the Hub and Spoke model, each CSSA provides specific support to their respected faculty as well as general support for all learners when needed.

Career Support Peers (CSPs): CSPs offer one on one appointments for current learners for general career development support such as resume review, cover letter review, LinkedIn profile, and mock interviews.

Career Advancement Services Coaches (CAS Coaches): Our Career Coaching service is free to Humber Alumni and Continuing Education (CE) learners. The service includes interest and skills assessment, one-on-one coaching, career goal identification, and educational planning

Career Steps Workshops: Career Development Workshops are designed to give you tips on writing effective resumes and cover letters, creating a LinkedIn Profile, acing interviews, understanding CareerConnect and doing effective job searches All workshops are CCR certified

Career Month: Usually scheduled in November and March offers interactive workshops, networking, panel discussions, job fairs and events aimed to prepare you for the world of work

Transition to Work: The Transition to Work for People with Disabilities initiative aims to support learners with disabilities by promoting self-advocacy, offering career preparedness information and workshops, tips for disclosing and negotiating accommodation needs in the workplace and much more

Humber North and Lakeshore campuses have four residence buildings housing over 1,400 learners throughout the academic year Each floor is organized into a community with a Resident Assistant (RA), a peer leader and mentor to ensure learners have a positive living experience

PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

1-on-1 Conversations: Residence Life Staff connect with each resident individually throughout the year. This serves as an opportunity for residents to ask questions, explore current issues they may be experiencing, and learn about important resources available to them in the campus community.

Residence Orientation: At the beginning of Fall and Winter terms, Residence Life hosts a variety of orientation events for residents. The goal is to welcome and educate learners on community values and standards, as well as orient learners to the resources available on campus

Monthly Community Meetings: Each month, learners are invited to attend their floor community to build relationships with each other, discuss community updates, recognize peer accomplishments, and receive residence updates from their Resident Assistant Humber Residence Council (HRC): The HRC is learner-led representative body for all learners residing in on-campus Residence and acts as a liaison between residents and Residence Life and/or Campus Service to communicate the needs of residents

Healthy Living Committee: Learners are invited to co-create a community environment that is focused on bringing positive change in the residence community by addressing relevant and current issues, such as alcohol and drug misuse, stress/anxiety-related concerns, and more

Food & Residence Forum: This learner-led advisory committee meets regularly to discuss food and residence service ideas and feedback to improve residence and food operations, such as residence facilities, food quality, hospitality and more Residence Life Appreciation: Learners participate in building community by demonstrating appreciation for their peers by submitting formal nominations throughout the academic year

FIRST YEAR FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE

First Year Experience (FYE) is a program that supports learners with their transition to Polytechnic through Peer Mentoring, Social Events, Strong Start Workshops and Financial Literacy Workshops. We provide learners with access to information and services, opportunities to get involved, meet new people, build relationships and create a sense of community.

FYE Peer Mentoring: The program matches first year learners with a Mentor who is an upper-year learner. Peer Mentors offer support by answering questions as well as providing information about the services, resources and events available on campus.

Social Events: We host events to support learners with getting involved in the Polytechnic community, meet other learners, and foster a sense of community.

Strong Start Workshops: Online workshops in blackboard introduce new learners to campus programs, services and resources Session topics include Polytechnic 101, We Got You, Finding Balance, Projects and Exams, and Getting Involved on Campus

Financial Literacy Workshops: Designed to increase the financial success of learners Session topics include Student Banking, Budgeting, Understanding Credit, Taxes, and Investments

STUDENT COMMUNITY STUDENT COMMUNITY STANDARDS STANDARDS

The Office of Student Community Standards (OSCS) promotes the rights, well-being, and safety of community members at Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber OSCS takes a developmental and restorative approach to managing incidents, focusing on learners’ behaviour and the impact/harm to themselves, others, and the institution

Faculty can contact OSCS by email to report an incident (OSCS@humber.ca). Include the name(s) and ID number(s) of the student(s), a brief description of the incident including the date and location, a description of the concerning behaviour(s), any previous efforts made to respond to/manage the behaviour, and the desired outcome.

Students can also contact OSCS on their own, without a faculty referral.

Incident Management: OSCS explores incidents of non-academic student behaviour that are alleged to contravene the Code of Student Community Standards and/or Sexual Violence Policy.

Consultations: Community Standards Advisors can consult with faculty about behaviours or incidents of concern, providing information and guidance on managing lower-level behaviours at the classroom and program level, making a complaint, and the Code process. Consultations can occur without filing a formal complaint OSCS Advisors can also consult with students who are considering making a complaint

Training and Development: OSCS facilitates workshops for faculty and students on topics such as the Code of Student Community Standards and process, conflict resolution, classroom management, and effective communication

Humber Fitness offers some of the most comprehensive, best-equipped facilities around. We offer an enormous range of classes, from Bootcamp to Zumba®, offered throughout the week to suit your schedule. Outstanding instructors to motivate and challenge you, whether you're a beginner or seasoned athlete.

Humber Polytechnic's fitness centre is available for use to all Polytechnic students, staff, and faculty. Humber Fitness offers: Group Exercise Classes, Personal Training, and Special Events.

In-person Fitness Classes: These classes are open to current Learners/Staff and Community Members Classes are first come first serve Class formats range from Spin, Strength, Cardio, Yoga, and more

Virtual Fitness Classes: Members can work out from the comfort of their home with our virtual group fitness offerings on YouTube Class formats range from HIIT, to yoga, Zumba®, and more

Personal Training: Members can meet in-Person with one of our certified personal trainers to create a tailored exercise program to meet their needs Virtual Personal Training is available by request

Community Memberships: Community memberships available to Fitness Centre These memberships are available to Humber Alumni, Humber Retirees and Community members Included in these memberships are full access to fitness centre and fitness classes

Special Events: We offer unique programming at certain times of the year such as Zumbathon, Moving for Mental Health Awareness Run/Walk/Roll, etc

ZenZone: Come into our calming space to meditate, stretch, do yoga or simply relax. The Zen Zone provides a safe space to unwind and decompress from your hectic day. We provide mats, blankets, pillows, and dim lighting to help you to feel at home and calm. A certified instructor with experience in yoga, meditation, and other calming techniques will be in the room to guide you.

Extramurals: Extramural programs are designed to give students the opportunity to participate in healthy competition in various sports and activities, against students from other schools, usually outside the bounds of their own campus

CARE CARE COORDINATORS COORDINATORS

Care Coordinators offer ongoing support, guidance, and advocacy to learners, and can connect them with various supports and resources available on-campus and in the community. Care Coordinators help learners navigate policy and process, provide referrals, and assist with a variety of learner concerns (e.g. financial, mental health, food insecurity, housing instability, academic considerations, etc.). They also receive disclosures of sexual violence from learners. Through a trauma informed, survivor-centric, anti-oppressive lens, they inform survivors on well-being supports, reporting options, and academic considerations. The goal is to support a learner's overall well-being and academic success

Faculty can refer learners to the Care Coordinator team by email (Care@humberca) or submit a Care Report Case management is a voluntary, student-led process, which requires the active engagement of the learner Learners may also contact us directly for support

PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

Non-Clinical Case Management: CCs provide short- (1-3 appointments) and long-term (4+ appointments) support with policy and process navigation, advocating for academic considerations, and can connect learners to appropriate resources at the Polytechnic and within their communities on matters such as: financial supports, food insecurity, housing instability, mental health, conflict resolution, substance abuse/addiction, and more.

Support for Sexual Violence Survivors: CCs receive disclosures of sexual violence and inform survivors about wellness and mental health supports, reporting options internal and external to the Polytechnic, liaise with faculty to arrange academic considerations for survivors, and connect survivors with other resources to support their well-being.

Consultations: CCs can consult with faculty on supporting a learner of concern or a distressed learner

Active Listening Sessions: CCs provide support for campus partners hosting sessions with sensitive content and are present to offer resources and referrals to affected learners

Training and Development: CCs offer trainings such as Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Violence for faculty and provide information on campus wellness supports

Submit the online Care Report to share a concern about a learner who may require additional supports or resources from a Care Coordinator, or other staff,

COUNSELLING COUNSELLING

Learners have access to private and confidential short-term counselling services led by professional clinicians Our goal is to support learners in exploring and understanding challenges affecting personal well-being and mental health, using a short-term, goal-oriented approach

CENTRE CENTRE

The Health Centre provides a variety of services for learners including immunization and clearance for clinical placement, crisis support, sexual health counselling, and first aid care for issues such as burns and cuts Learners also have access to physicians and a psychiatrist for all their health needs Reasons to seek medical care may include diagnosing and treatment of an illness, managing a chronic condition, addressing injuries, seeking expert advice on health concerns, and obtaining a prescription for medication

Learners can access Health Centre’s services by calling the Student Wellness and Accessibility (SWAC) and scheduling an appointment If a learner is in crisis, they can directly visit the Health Centre where they will be seen by a nurse between the hours of 8:30 am and 6:30 pm

The Health Centre offers complete pre-placement medical requirements for programs that require placement clearance We promote safe sex practices by offering free access to male condoms, dental dam, diaphragms and birth control counselling

PEER WELLNESS PEER WELLNESS TEAM TEAM

The Peer Wellness team supports learners at Humber and UGH by providing peer-led services and initiatives, including 1-1 coaching, peer-led workshops, peer active listening program, and wellness outreach. Peer-wellness coaches support learners in their wellness journey and can work with learners to build a tailored wellness plan and keep on track with follow-up sessions to review progress and set new goals. Peer-led wellness workshops, programs and outreach events are held throughout the year to support learners in accessing wellness resources and strategies to improve health and well-being.

PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

Peer Wellness Coaching: Our Peer Wellness Coaches are trained to provide 1-1 wellness coaching to support learners in achieving personalized wellness goals Peer Wellness coaching is available to all Humber and UGH learners in the winter semester

Peer-Led Wellness Workshops: Led by Peer Wellness coaches and held from October through April, workhsops support learners in understanding and strengthening strategies to improve their wellness Some topics include forming healthy habits, stress management, building resiliency and more

Peer Active Listening Program: Peer Wellness Facilitators lend an ear to Humber and UGH learners over the fall and winter semester. Drop-in sessions will be focused on fostering belonging and connection.

Wellness Outreach: Events are held throughout the year to enhance the wellbeing of Humber and UGH learners. Events include: Humber Let's Talk Day, Ways to Wellness, info booths and more.

CONSENT PEER CONSENT PEER EDUCATION EDUCATION

The Consent Peer Education and Program (CPEP) team aims to prevent sexual violence and foster a culture of consent by way of educating and empowering the Humber/UGH community (including students, faculty, and staff) The CPEP team supports learners at Humber/UGH by providing sexual violence and consent education through events, outreach, social media campaigns, empowerment initiatives, in addition to educational workshops and opportunities We offer programs on consent, sexual violence awareness, sexual health, sex positivity and healthy relationships Events and initiatives are dedicated to creating awareness for sexual violence, supporting survivors and people that have been impacted by sexual violence, and supporting work to end sexual violence on campus

CPEP Podcast: A learner-led podcast about sexual health and consent

Bystander Intervention Training: This training teaches participants how to respond to and intervene when they witness situations of sexual violence

Take Back the Night: Takes place in September and is an event dedicated to solidarity with survivors and in protest of sexual violence

16 Days of Activism: The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence against women is an international campaign and takes place between November 25 (International Day Against Violence Against Women) and December 10 (International Human Rights Day)

Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Takes place during March/April, aimed to increase knowledge and awareness about sexual assault and how to prevent sexual violence

It Takes All of Us Training: Is an online sexual violence prevention and education training module Humber Polytechnic learners can access the training through Blackboard and UGH learners can access the training through CourseLink

SEXUAL VIOLENCE DISCLOSURES AND SUPPORT

Incidents of sexual violence can be reported and survivors can receive support without making a complaint and initiating a Code process

Faculty who receive a disclosure from a learner who experienced or witnessed sexual violence should refer them to the Care Coordinators (care@humberca) Faculty is also required to complete the Sexual Violence form available through their Associate Dean Additional referrals can be made to the Department of Public Safety to make a security report, for safety planning, and for emergencies, as needed

INCLUSION AND INCLUSION AND BELONGING BELONGING

The Inclusion and Belonging portfolio, an SSE campus partner, offers four key areas that support learner success: Black Student Support and Engagement (BSSE), LGBTQ+ Resource Centre, Spirituality and Wellness Centre, and Indigenous Education & Engagement The Inclusion and Belonging portfolio reports to the Vice-President, Inclusion and Belonging SSE collaborates with these departments year-round on various student programs and initiatives

BLACK STUDENT SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT

The Black Student Support and Engagement (BSSE) Program seeks to provide learners who identify as Black, African, and Caribbean with community, resources and support to help them fully maximize on their campus experience. Our goal is to create a holistic environment, for academic, social and professional development, and civic engagement for all Black identifying students at Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber

BSSE offers programming such as the King’s Gathering, Circle of Queens or Blaq Collective, Learning Skills Workshops in collaboration with Peer Assisted Learning Services, Black Heritage Month and Black Excellence Orientation events

LGBTQ+ RESOURCE CENTRE

The LGBTQ+ Resource Centre works to promote safer, braver, positive spaces at Humber Polytechnic and offers a dedicated space at both the North and Lakeshore campuses. During the school year the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre offers a variety of ways to for folks to connect with one another, access resources, and build community We offer a range of discussion groups, large-scale events, and activity groups We also coordinate events in June for Pride Month

LGBTQ+ Resource Centre offers programming such as Qrafty, 2SLGBTQ+ Library, Queer Book Club, QSocial, BlacQ Collective, and more!
