2025 HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN UTAH DINNER

JULY 26, 2025

*Updated as of 7/24/25

WELCOME LETTER

Dear Family, Friends, and Community of HRC,

We welcome you to the 19th Annual Utah Dinner, where we come together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in shared joy. As we gather together this evening we will be acknowledging the successes of our community through visibility and service. This is especially significant given the increased adversity and uncertainty we face at home, across the nation, and abroad.

Over the past year, the LGBTQ+ community has faced many challenges both locally and nationally. We have seen a rise in attacks against transgender individuals through harmful legislation and judicial decisions. There are ongoing threats and efforts aimed at community erasure by the Federal Government along with the removal of essential mental health and general healthcare services. There is a ban on symbols representing inclusivity and safety to LGBTQ+ people in public spaces. In addition, there is widespread weakening of education, factual information, and objective reasoning in civil discourse and society.

In spite of these obstacles, there is optimism for resistance and radical love. Vocal members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies within federal, state, and municipal governments are using their platforms to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. Local organizations are offering social outreach and support to the wider QTBIPOC community. We are witnessing active resistance through creative subversion in public policy aimed at unjust laws. This resistance restores human dignity, visibility, and principles of equality.

By supporting the Human Rights Campaign tonight, you are helping defend LGBTQ+ youth, the transgender community, and QTBIPOC individuals. As the Co-Chairs of the Dinner, we invite all attendees to consider; how will you become advocates? We encourage you to empower yourselves through resisting injustice, embracing radical love, increasing visibility, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

We thank you for your unwavering support for tonight’s event, the Human Rights Campaign, and your local Utah Steering Committee.

CASSI ROBISON AND ERIC BOSCÁN
2025 HRC Utah Dinner Co-Chairs

KELLEY ROBINSON HRC PRESIDENT

Kelley Robinson is the ninth president of the Human Rights Campaign — the first Black, Queer woman to lead the organization. The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality and liberation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. Robinson — widely respected for her work over the last 15 years creating and leading winning campaigns and programs — stepped into her new role at HRC after serving as Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. From community organizer to progressive leader, Robinson has been at the forefront in the fight for bodily autonomy and racial and gender equity, with a focus on lifting up marginalized communities and building political power. Robinson will lead HRC — and its more than 3 million member advocates — as the organization fulfills its mission to realize a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

DAVID ARCHULETA VISIBLITY AWARD

Since first stepping into the pop spotlight at age 17, David Archuleta has embodied the kind of genuine star power that can’t be manufactured. After years of dazzling audiences with his radiant personality and phenomenal voice—a journey that’s included turning out multiple platinum-selling hits, achieving global acclaim as a captivating live performer, and emerging as an undeniable fixture on the pop-culture scene—the Miami-born singer/songwriter experienced a major personal transformation that radically altered his identity as an artist. As shown on his recent single “Hell Together,” Archuleta has dramatically expanded the landscape of his songwriting and devoted himself to making pop music with equal parts uncompromising emotion and exhilarating impact.

With his latest triumphs including winning the 2024 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist and landing a book deal with a HarperCollins imprint for his forthcoming memoir, Archuleta first moved toward the unfiltered truth of his new material with a revelatory writing trip to Toronto in late 2022. “It was a really magical week where I started exploring topics I’d never discussed before in my music, like falling in love with a man and leaving my faith,” says the L.A.-based artist, who came out in 2021. “In a way it was scary, but mostly it was thrilling to do what would have seemed impossible to the person I used to be. I realized I don’t have to hide who I am anymore.” Although he’d displayed a heartfelt candor on previous releases like his eighth album Therapy Sessions (a 2020 album that opened up about his struggles with anxiety), Archuleta ultimately embraced an entirely new element of unbridled creativity in the writing of songs like his euphoric 2023 single “Afraid To Love.”

While Archuleta brought a sublimely dance-ready sound to songs like “Afraid To Love” and “I’m Yours” (a 2023 single whose video earned such illustrious awards as the Best Music Video prize at the Cannes World Film Festival), “Hell Together” centers on a stripped-back and soulful form of piano-driven pop. A gospel-inspired ballad that hit the top five on iTunes the day of its premiere in March 2024, the heartrending yet triumphant track took shape after a conversation with his mother following the publication of a People magazine article in which he discussed his faith transition. “I didn’t hear from my mom for a few days after the article came out and I was worried she was upset with me, because she was very devout and always saw the church as a place of healing,” he says. “But when we finally talked my mother said that she was stepping away from the church as well. She told me, ‘I don’t want to be somewhere that my children don’t feel loved and welcomed. If you go to Hell, we’re all going to Hell with you. We’re a family and we’ll always be there for each other, in good or in bad! ’”

Not only a powerful example of his newly elevated artistry, “Hell Together” is an unprecedented showcase for the tremendous vocal talents Archuleta has cultivated since childhood. Raised in Utah from the age of six, he first fell in love with music due to the influence of his mother (a salsa singer and dancer) and father (a jazz trumpeter). By his early teens he’d begun writing songs of his own, and in 2008 he gained massive fame as the first runner-up on the seventh season of American Idol. After making his debut with his double-platinum single “Crush,” he released a steady stream of albums and built an adoring following around the world, touring in such far-flung places as Asia and the Middle East. In a truly unexpected and audacious move, Archuleta left the music business in a moment of colossal success and headed to Chile to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for two years—then returned with a profoundly renewed sense of purpose as he dove back into his music career.

NUANUA COLLECTIVE

COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD

Utah is home to the highest percentage of Pacific Islanders in the continental United States, with Pasifika communities present in the state as early as 1890. Despite this long history, Pacific Islanders in Utah especially those who are Queer and Trans continue to face systemic exclusion, cultural erasure, and lack of representation. Nuanua Collective was founded in 2019 to respond to this reality and exists to provide a safe and brave space centering the voices and lived experiences of LGBTQ plus Pacific Islanders.

Through identity affirming programming rooted in both education and celebration, Nuanua creates an ocean of opportunities for community to gather, heal, and thrive.

Led by Executive Director Jakey Siolo and a dynamic leadership team including Lauren To’omalatai cofounder, Maafu Suliafu cofounder, Sina Bracewell, Jaemen Cobb, Kelela Fonua, Isa Bracewell, Rena Ripley, Isaiah Asiata, Angela Robinson, and Joe Hola, Nuanua is a consistently visible expression of the joy, love, and resilience so often denied to LGBTQ+ Pasifika communities.

Nuanua’s year round programming includes Tatala, a monthly Queer Pasifika healing circle; Camp Nuanua, an annual retreat centering rest and community care; Fafa Fest, an Indigenous Pride Festival now entering its 3rd year; and Pasifika Out Proud, a series promoting coming out stories told by members of the community. Through our program Local Lens, the collective builds meaningful relationships with NHPI owned small businesses, while Oceania Out Loud uplifts Pasifika artists through an

intergenerational performance series. The collective also hosts vaccine and STD and HIV clinics, supports the Westside Food Bank in Glendale every other week, and actively engages in civic advocacy, offering lobbying trainings, organizing political protests, filling city council chambers, and supporting the annual AAPI Day on the Hill. Nuanua also partners with city leaders on key initiatives, including the proclamation for Trans Day of Visibility.

With programming that now serves over three thousand individuals each year, Nuanua has become a vital space for healing and connection. Due to the lack of resources and spaces for QTBIPOC communities, Nuanua has opened its doors and expanded programming to welcome all Queer and Trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, while continuing to center Pasifika identities and cultural values of family, interdependence, and care.

Operating as a chosen family, Nuanua remains rooted in love, joy, and radical inclusion, creating space for every person to be fully seen, affirmed, and celebrated.

DALLAS RIVAS

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

Over the past several years, Dallas has had the honor of advancing transgender visibility through his leadership in Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) initiatives. He created what is now the world’s largest TDOR memorial, located at the Salt Lake City and County Building every November. It’s a space for collective remembrance, education, and healing. Each year, the memorial includes a candlelight vigil and name-reading ceremony to honor trans lives lost to violence.

This work is deeply rooted in community. He has coordinated volunteers to help build the memorial, where each hanging flag represents a life taken too soon, bearing the individual’s name, age, brief bio, and cause of death. These tributes create a powerful emotional and visual space for reflection and action.

With community support, he has raised essential funds to sustain the memorial annually.

As a vocal advocate, Dallas reminds Utah’s transgender community that remembrance and visibility are not just symbolic—they are vital acts of resistance, healing, and solidarity. Every November 20, the community gathers not only to grieve, but to honor, uplift, and demand a future where trans lives are valued and protected.

Dallas remains committed to this mission through grief-centered remembrance, visibilitydriven advocacy, and collaborative partnerships that create spaces of healing, unity, and hope.

Lyft supports safer spaces, and all the humans who inhabit them.

WORKDAY FOUNDATION

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation works to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to care for their families, earn a living and live open, honest and safe lives at home, at work and in the community. The HRC Foundation is a non-profit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.

WHAT WE DO

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

B U IL DING A ND DEM ONS TR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.
